Greetings! My name is Dr. Danielle McCamey, founder, CEO, & President of DNPs of Color. Thank you for partnering with us as we embark on our 2nd Annual Conference-DNPs of Color: Changing the Game and Forging New Paths. We felt this theme fitting because the energy within nursing and the DNPs of Color community is focused now more than ever before on transformative and meaningful changes in our profession and advancing health equity.
As DNPs of Color we are uniquely positioned to be the premier organization that by our mere existence present as healthcare professionals, leaders, and nursing faculty- improves outcomes and experiences for our patients, families, organizations, and academic institutions. Being committed to diversity, equity, antiracism, and inclusion in all we do is changing the game allowing us to have a greater impact in forging new paths for opportunity for others to have a seat at the table to amplify our voices and lead change.
We will have dynamic speakers, poster presentations, networking, and so much more. In addition, we are committed to giving back to the community and will be featuring, a local nonprofit: It Takes Two, Inc. We will be hosting a zoom fundraisera-thon to help support their mission and further their impact amongst the Baltimore City youth.
We are excited to have our conference at the Reginald F. Lewis Maryland African American History & Culture Museum.

Dr. Vernell DeWitty is a transformational leader with a unique vision for advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion for the nursing profession. She served as the inaugural Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer at the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) where she advised the nation’s top academic nursing leaders on building consensus around a strategic approach to diversity and inclusion. She is now Senior Consultant for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for AACN and the CEO of Pourquois Diversity Consulting, LLC.
Her distinguished career encompasses leadership roles in nursing educ tion, practice, and healthcare administration. She directed the Robert Wood Johnson New Careers in Nursing Scholarship Program, a nine-year $44 million national collaboration between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and AACN that focused on diversifying the nursing workforce. In this capacity she created and implemented strategies and resources that contributed to the academic success of underrepresented and disadvantaged students in 130 nursing schools located in 41 states and the District of Columbia. In addition, Dr. Dewitty led the design and implementation of a groundbreaking technical assistance program for over four years for 32 nursing schools funded by the Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA) to increase nursing workforce diversity.
Dr. DeWitty most recently designed a training program, including the development of an expert consultative team, for nursing schools seeking to implement holistic admissions review and related strategies to increase diversity and inclusion in student populations. She has published on mentoring, academic success, and student progression as she continues to develop strategies and programs to increase the diversity and cultural competency of nursing graduates.
Dr. DeWitty earned her doctorate from George Mason University, her MBA from Howard University, her MSN from The Catholic University of America, and her BSN from Dillard University. She is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and received a certificate as a Healthcare Executive in Diversity and Inclusion from the Association of American Medical Colleges. She is a graduate of the Unconscious Bias Learning Lab by Cook Ross and the Maryland Equity and Inclusion Leadership Program at the University of Maryland Shafer Policy Center.
Dr. DeWitty was the recipient of the American Nurses Association 2014 Mary Mahoney Award for her significant contributions to advancing equal opportunities in nursing. She also received the President’s Award from the State University of New York, Downstate for her leadership and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education in March 2020 awarded her the Individual Diversity Award. Dr. DeWitty has an unwavering passion for improving the health of vulnerable populations as reflected in her work to achieve health equity, increase access to care, and advance workforce diversity.

DNPs of Color (DOC), is a 501c3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to increase diversity in doctoral studies, clinical practice, and leadership for nurses. DNP, short for Doctor of Nursing Practice, is the highest level of education a nurse can attain which focuses on clinical practice. DNPs influence healthcare outcomes through healthcare policy, organizational leadership, and translating nursing research into evidencedbased practice.
DOCs top priorities are networking and mentoring. We have provided an online community for nurses of color who have obtained, aspiring, or working towards obtaining their DNP. DOCs activities include professional development, conferences, speaker events, reward and recognition.
To serve DNPs of Color through networking, mentorship and advocacy to increase diversity in doctoral studies, clinical practice and leadership.

DNPs of Color (DOC) is thrilled to be bringing its 2nd Annual Nursing Conference, Changing the Game and Forging New Paths, to “Charm City” Baltimore, Maryland. This educational and networking event is expected to bring over 300 of nursing’s top scholars, innovators, thought leaders, educators, and practice leaders across the country. Many vendors, advocates and allies will be in attendance to support the mission and vision of DOCs to increase diversity.
Baltimore is home to Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Hospital. We are excited to converge on this beautiful city for networking, connection and giving back.
The Lewis Museum, the largest African American museum in Maryland, has been the authentic voice of Maryland African American history and culture since it opened in 2005. We tell our story through our permanent collection, special exhibitions, educational programs and public events.
• The 82,000 square foot facility accommodates over 13,000 square feet of permanent and temporary exhibition space, a two-story theater, museum gift shop, classrooms, meeting rooms, an outdoor terrace and reception areas. Several of the museum’s spaces, including the upper lobby reception area, are available for special events and meetings.
• The Lewis, which provides dynamic educational programs for both children and adults, is especially proud of its partnership with the Maryland State Department of Education. The Museum’s education department has developed an African American curricula and provided teacher training that is invaluable to Maryland’s 850,000 students and 50,000 teachers.
• The Museum has a collection of about 10,000 objects. Its Online Collection Portal, contains digitized images which are accessible to scholars, students and the general public.
• The Lewis provides an important venue to share Maryland’s African American history two blocks east of one of the State’s most popular attractions, the Baltimore Inner Harbor.

Angel McCullough DNP, RN, MBA, CCRN, NEA-BC, C-PCC, is a member of the Patient Care Executive Team at Thomas Jefferson University Health System, and the Director of Patient Care Services & Nursing Operations. Ms. McCullough has recently launched a professional consulting business specializing in leadership development, diversity and inclusion team assessments and executive coaching, A.N.G.E.L. Leadership Consulting Services. Ms. McCullough has served in Executive Level Healthcare Administrative roles in some of the most complex organizations in and around the city of Philadelphia. Although she holds degrees in Nursing Leadership has remained an active front line staff nurse in the Medical/Cardiac ICU at Lankenau Hospital. She stands on the principle that being a leader makes her a better nurse and being a nurse makes her a better leader. Angel was inspired to launch her leadership consulting business because she noticed a lack of preparation and support for minority leaders to assimilate into leadership positions within complex organizations. Dr. McCullough was selected as one of the 2018 Nurse Director Fellows through the American Organization of Nursing Leaders (AONL) where she spent one year as a part of a selective cohort of Nursing Executives across the United States networking and sharing best practices in Healthcare Administration. She holds a BSN from West Chester University, an MSN from LaSalle University and an MBA from Eastern University and is currently finishing up her DNP at Walden University. Angel is committed to helping to train and coach the next generation of healthcare leaders on foundational and fundamental leadership principles guaranteed to help them catapult to success.
Aron King, MS, RN, is a registered nurse with experience in both cardiac telemetry and medical intensive care units. He is currently an Assistant Manager at UC Davis Health. Aron received his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas, Arlington and Master of Science from University of California, Davis. His graduate research focus was on prevalence of microaggressions and the impact on satisfaction and symptoms of depression in graduate nursing students of color. Aron is the co-author of a book entitled “The Diaries of a Resilient Black Nurse: An Anthology of Struggles and Achievements of Black Nurses in America”. He currently serves as the Executive Board Member for Capitol City Black Nurses Association, a local chapter of the National Black Nurses Association, and the Health Committee Co-Chair for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Sacramento. As a nurse leader, his goal is to increase diversity in the nursing workforce through outreach particularly in Hispanic and Black communities.
My name is Althea Carless, and I was born in St. Catherine, Jamaica. I have been in nursing for the past 20 years. I am currently the Clinical Nurse Manager in GI Oncology, at Weill Cornell Medical Center. I consider myself a born leader and a team player. I exude contagious enthusiasm, and is extremely compassionate and empathetic towards patients and their families. One of my major accomplishments is obtaining my Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree with distinct honors. My favorite color is pink, in all its beautiful shades. My hobbies are cycling, eating, hiking, and lounging. In my humble opinion, sexual health is one of the most vital and essential aspects of human functioning; therefore, as frontliners to patient care delivery, it isnursing’s responsibility to educate oncology patients about sexual changes that can occur with chemotherapy and provide them with resources and guidance to ameliorate concerns.
Katie Boston-Leary is the Director of Nursing Programs at the American Nurses Association overseeing the Nursing Practice and Work Environment Division and Healthy Nurse Healthy Nation. She is also the Co-Lead for Project Firstline, a multi-million-dollar grant collaborative with the CDC for training on Infection Prevention and Control. Katie is also the co-chair for the DEI committee for the Healthcare Leaders Network Delaware Valley, an ACHE affiliate. She helped redesign the Nurse Leadership Institute at the University of Maryland with an embedded coaching program Katie is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Maryland School of Nursing and the School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University. She is a board member on St. Johns University Health Programs and an editorial advisory board member with Web/MD Medscape. Katie also staffed the National Commission to Address Racism in Nursing and is also part of the National Academy of Science and Medicine’s National Plan to Address Clinician Well-Being supported by the U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy. Katie also worked as an ANA representative with 4 partner organizations to organize a National Nurse Staffing Think Tank and Task Force, which published short term actionable recommendations to address the nurse staffing crisis.
She was recently identified August 2019 Health Leaders Journal as “One of Five Chief Nursing Officers Changing Healthcare”. Her most recent research was a qualitative study on nurses’ perceptions of power dynamics in the hospital setting. She is a well-known speaker nationally and internationally with many publications and podcast guest invitations. She completed her PhD at Walden University in Health Services, obtained a dual degree MBA and MHA from the University of Maryland Global Campus and her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Bowie State University in Maryland. She is a boardcertified Nurse Executive and obtained a nurse executive leadership certificate from Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. She has been interviewed for stories in numerous print, online and televised media outlets namely CNBC, NY Times, Cheddar TV, HR Maximizer, Axios, Beckers and Bloomberg News. She has written and co-authored numerous articles on staffing, diversity and leadership and was recently featured on NBC’s Today Show to discuss the nurse staffing crisis that is impacting health care delivery.
Janet A. Williams, DNP, MSM, CNM, is a board-certified Nurse Midwife who currently works in a full scope municipal midwifery practice in New York. She received her Master’s in Midwifery from SUNY Downstate, and her Doctorate from Wilkes University. She has been a midwife for 19 years caring for women from puberty to menopause and has delivered more than 900 babies. She holds an appointment at Columbia University as a clinical instructor for graduate midwifery students. She is the founder of Transitions Women’;s Health Consulting, LLC. Dr. J interacts and educates maternal healthcare professionals and students about implicit bias and racism to help correct this deficiency within our healthcare system. This is what led to the creation of her signature program entitled: B.L.A.C.K. Mothers Interrupted which launched her as a cutting-edge maternal health professional in providing implicit bias education which is now a mandatory course.

Andrew Clarke is a former real estate agent and now a Financial Empowerment Coach. He grew up watching his mom, a nurse, work over 100 hours a week for years to support their family back in Jamaica.This motivated him to start learning about finances at only 15. By 18, he got his real estate license and bought his first investment property at 24.
In 2020, he created the Expanding Wallet website to be a financial resource that includes blog articles, YouTube videos, and a financial course. Andrew helps his clients create a strong financial foundation for building generational wealth.
LeTizia Baxter Smith is a Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and a Co-founder of Silver Lining Psychiatric Consultants. She is a native of the middle Tennessee area. With 15 years of experience in the mental health field, LeTizia uses her warm, supportive approach to assist clients in their journey to discovering their best selves. LeTizia attended Vanderbilt University for her undergraduate career and completed her Master Science in Nursing (MSN) from Vanderbilt School of Nursing. She then completed her Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP) at Emory School of Nursing. She regularly engages in continuing education in the field of psychiatry. She is a member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA), Tennessee Nurses Association (TNA), the American Nurses Association (ANA), and National Organization of Nurse Practitioners (NONPF). She was also chosen to be a SAMHSA Minority Fellow from 2018-2020 and will serve on the DNPs of Color Advisory Committee in the upcoming year. Currently, she is on faculty at Vanderbilt School of Nursing where she has served as the chair of the diversity and inclusion committee in the past.
Dr. Yvette Conyers, is a Clinical Associate Professor at the George Washington University, School of Nursing, and certified Family Nurse Practitioner. She is previously Assistant Professor at St. John Fisher College and Co-Director of the accelerated bachelor's nursing program at the University of Rochester School of Nursing and helped shape academic programs that attracted underrepresented students. Conyers research, focuses on developing cultural competency in health care providers to ensure the equitable treatment of all patients. A well-respected educator who is an active and committed leader on race, diversity, and inclusion issues, Conyers is dedicated to creating and expanding access and opportunities for members of underrepresented groups. She is instrumental in launching the Rochester chapter of the National Black Nurses Association. Professionally, she has worked as a nurse and nurse practitioner for several community organizations, including Jordan Health Center, Hillside Family of Agencies, and Highland Hospital. She previously served as Nursing Director for Home Care of Rochester (HCR) African American Initiative, where she became a certified transcultural nurse. In recognition of her leadership and community work, Dr. Conyers was a 2021 and 2020 Rochester Business Journal Power 100 Honoree, 2020 Greater NYC Black Nurse Association Educator of the Year Honoree, 2020 Forty Under 40 Rochester Business Journal Honoree, 2020 National Black Nurses Association 2020 Under 40 Award Honoree and a 2019 Health Care Achievement Award from the Rochester Business Journal. Conyers is a member of local and national organizations, including the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, Sigma Theta Tau, DNPs of Color, National Black Nurses Association, Common Ground Health, and the Transcultural Nursing Society. She has a Doctorate of Nursing Practice, Post Master’s Degree in Family Nurse Practitioner from St. John Fisher College and a Master’s of Science in Nursing Education from Roberts Wesleyan College.
Angel Daniels is an Associate Professor and Curriculum Coordinator-General Education at Bon Secours College of Nursing. Before entering this position, Angel worked as the Clinical Transformation Manager with the Bon Secours Health System. Angel has over 25 years of experience working in the healthcare field. Angel earned her registered nurse diploma from Bon Secours School of Nursing and obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science degrees from Liberty University with a concentration in Nursing Education. Angel earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice at Chamberlain College of Nursing with a concentration in Health System Leadership. Lastly, Angel is a lifelong learner working concurrently on two post-master’s certificates in Family Nurse Practitioner at Chamberlain University and Population Health Management at John’s Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

He was appointed in August 2011, as a Commissioned Corps Officer in the United States Public Health Service. Dr. Onserio provides guidance, policy and coordinates programs aimed at advancing regulatory science. These programs include but not limited to the review of the FDA Scientific Achievement Awards program. In addition, he is also the program lead overseeing the Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP)’s emergency preparedness execution and management. This program provides an organized effort to ensure the continuance of essential functions of a federal agency across a wide range of potential emergencies. On another capacity, he coordinates review of applications for Medical Countermeasures Initiative (MCMi), a program aimed at advancing regulatory science and development through intramural and extramural collaborative research, as well as through partnerships with academia, U.S. government agencies, and Pharma industry to explore solutions to complex scientific regulatory issues. Recently, the MCMi initiative was instrumental in the speedy development and approval of SARs-Cov2 vaccine.

Dr. Shawana S. Moore is a nationally recognized, board-certified women’s health nurse practitioner who specializes in providing women’s and gender-related care throughout the lifespan. She is the Chair of the National Association of Nurse Practitioner in Women’s Health. Shawana served as the Director of the Women’s Health- Gender Related Nurse Practitioner Program at Jefferson College of Nursing from 2014-2022. She was instrumental in redesigning curriculum, increasing first-time certification pass rates, and increasing student enrollment in the women’s health track during her time at Jefferson. Kim Rutley-Campbell DNP, MSN, MAE, BA, CRRN, CNL, CHES is a recent graduate of West Coast University. She has amassed a wealth of professional nursing experience working in various specialties which include adult and geriatric behavioral health, physical rehabilitation, blind rehabilitation, palliative care, addiction medicine, clinical nurse leader (CNL), travel and registry nursing, unit-based nursing leadership, and mental health and medical-surgical clinical instruction for RN and LVN students. As a certified CNL, she is keenly attuned to processes that impact patient safety and patient outcomes. It was during her role as a clinical instructor, that she observed the magnitude of interruptions and distractions nurses experienced during medication administration processes (MAP). Assessing interruptions and distractions during MAP became the focus of her DNP scholarly project. She aims to raise awareness of the most globally interrupted nursing task and the need to implement processes to minimize unnecessary interruptions and distractions during the high-risk and often high-volume nursing task of medication administration.

Dr. Cheryl Ann Thaxton is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse and Doctor of Nursing Practice Program Director at Texas Woman’s University (TWU). She has 30 years of experience in nursing which includes several years of experience in critical care, palliative care, primary care, nursing leadership, curriculum development, program development, and as school of nursing faculty. Dr. Thaxton has devoted several years of her career to research surrounding the specific needs of children and adults with life-limiting illnesses. She has served as national Faculty for the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) for over a decade. The ELNEC project is a national and international education initiative to improve palliative care. Since 2000, ELNEC is a collaboration between City of Hope, Duarte, California, and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN),Washington, DC. Dr. Thaxton has a plethora of evidence-based publications relating care of pediatric and adult patients with life limiting illnesses. She developed a curriculum along with other ELNEC Faculty for the Oncology APRN - Primary Palliative Care role focused on supporting pediatric oncology patients. In 2021,Dr. Thaxton received the DFW Great 100 Nurses award in Dallas,Texas. At Kaiser, he has served as in a variety of roles from a traveling nurse, assistant nurse manager, and department manager. Dre has worked at Kaiser Permanente for eight years, three of those years were spent providing direct clinical care in the Intensive Care and Transitional Care departments as a nursing leader.
