Richardson Ranch Tlell Polled Herefords

4th Annual Online Sale September 12th – 16th 2013

INTRODUCTION Welcome to our Fourth Annual Online Auction We welcome all our friends and Hereford enthusiasts back for our 4th Annual Online Sale. The Online format has been a great tool for us. No longer do we have to truck animals down the road to a consignment sale before sending them off to their new homes. The savings in trucking, hotels and stress on the animals means we can deliver a healthier animal to you, our clients, at less cost In fact, the buyers get to shop from the comfort of home and no longer have to travel costly miles to view the cattle in a sale barn. It’s a win win for everyone.

Our family news in the last year was highlighted by two major events. Our son Dane completed his DVM at Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon this spring and has since become an Associate Veterinarian at the Kamloops Veterinary Clinic. Our daughter Jamie and her partner Bill have settled in at Tlell with the purchase of an adjoining acreage and house and Jamie is now sporting a diamond engagement ring. Bill and Jamie are major components of Richardson Ranch team, working side by side with Parents and Grandparents in all aspects of our business ventures including our Feed Store and Animal Hospital as well as our beef cattle business.

It doesn’t get any better for us than to have another breeder be successful with their purchase from our sale. Our First Online Sale saw Tlell 199S Xplosive 18X sell to Clay Enterprises of Saskatchewan. Their hard work and perseverance showing Xplosive 18X paid off last fall when they first won Supreme Champion at Manitoba AgEx and then two weeks later he was Grand Champion Polled Hereford at Western Canadian Agribition and selected for the Final Ten in the Royal Bank Supreme. This spring Xplosive has has been leased to Semex who will oversee his marketing.

Last fall we also consigned eight Hereford bulls to the Canadian Hereford Associations Net Feed Efficiency trials at Cattleland’s and OIds College. We believe this venture into genomics and net feed efficiency is the way to help solidify Herefords as a cornerstone breed in the Canadian cattle industry. Our thirty years of selection for rate of gain in our Hereford cattle was very evident when we had three of the top four gaining bulls in the pen. Not surprising, considering we have never selected for it, our eight bulls were randomly spread across the graph for net feed efficiency. The upside is that now that we can measure it, we can select for it!

Our sale this year includes a good selection of very useful bred heifers, all bred to calving ease sires. Also, we are offering a choice lot from of our best heifer calves as well as an exciting Bull Calf who is a maternal brother to Xplosive, the reigning Polled Hereford Agribition Grand Champion. Embryos, qualified for EU, US and Australia, will also be a highlight as some of them are out of Xplosives dam sired by SHF Rib Eye and others are from the Jade cow family sired by Xplosive 18X. Whatever your choice, we are confident that you will be pleased and most importantly, these cattle will work for you ! We guarantee all cattle in the sale are DLF, IEF & HYF.

To help our buyers get their purchases home this fall we will offer free trailering from Tlell along Highway 16 as far as the Alberta/Saskatchewan border. In appreciation of our buyers commitment to purchase Tlell cattle we will this year have a buyers draw for a stay at Tlell in one of our Guest Houses which will include a day fishing for spring salmon on the ocean waters around Haida Gwaii or river fishing coho in the Tlell River. We will include return tickets for two on Air Canada from your closest major airport to Sandspit in the summer of 2014.

Don & Leslie

Craig says : It is a pleasure for me to once again be involved with the Richardson Ranch Online Production Sale. I visited the ranch at the end of August, and I am familiar with the cattle being offered. Don’s philosophy is simple: Their location is remote and the transportation costs extreme, so they must deal only in cattle of superior quality. Much research goes into each individual before it is purchased and makes the long journey to the island. The land base at Richardson Ranch is limited, and only the best of the natural increase are offered for sale. The yearling heifers on offer are certainly the most uniform group to date, and they are raised on a straight Roughage Ration. These females are moderate in their frame makeup, interesting in their genetic profile and carrying service to some very exciting and current service sires. The Twenty X calendar year calves are very good. These heifers have the quality to show and be competitive. They also have the genetic history to make great mother cows. Aftershock is a maternal brother to the current Canadian Western Agribition Grand Champion Bull and a top ten pick in the RBC Supreme Challenge. He has a wonderful appeal and is a terrific prospect. He has a big hip, is long through his body and has that beautiful carriage through his head and neck. I can attest to the goodness of these cattle, as we have owned several Richardson Ranch females. Some of the best value you will encounter this fall will be in the Richardson Ranch 4th Annual Online Sale, September 12th – 16th 2013. Don and Leslie go above and beyond on their offer to deliver, and they would also be pleased to show some of the sale cattle on your behalf at Edmonton Farmfair in November. As I mentioned, I have recently seen the sale cattle, along with their dams and their siblings, so give me a call. I would be happy to discuss them with you.

AUCTION GUIDELINES Welcome to the Richardson Ranch 4th Annual Online Auction. Again this year we are using LiveAuctions.TV to make the process smoother and more secure. Please read the following instructions and if you have any trouble or questions, be sure to give us a call at 250-557-4348 or email us at don@richardsonranch.ca RICHARDSON RANCH 4th ANNUAL ONLINE AUCTION DATES AND TIMES The auction is set to open for bids at 9:00 a.m. Pacific Daylight Savings Time on Thursday, September 12th, 2012 with the internet gavel coming down on the first lot at 7:00 p.m. PDST Monday, September 16th, 2012. We will then proceed to sell one lot at a time, with the lot going to the highest bidder when no further bidding has occurred in 45 seconds since the last bid. A sale order will be posted 9:00 AM Monday September 16. If you don’t have computer access, phone in bids will be accepted at the numbers listed on the terms and conditions page. Due to some folks computers and their internet connection I would stress that you use the maximum proxy bid feature if you really want a lot. If your computer takes time to refresh the screen when you are making a crucial bid you may be disappointed and loss the animal to a lessor bid. HOW TO PARTICIPATE In order to participate in the online auction you will need to pre-register and obtain a buyer number. To do this go to the LiveAuctions website, www.liveauctions.tv, and select Richardson Ranch 4th Annual Online Auction. After logging in the buyer registration form should pop up automatically. If it doesn’t there is a link you can select that says, “register for a buyer number”. This form requires you to fill out your banks name, city, province, phone number and a contact. You may register to bid after bidding has opened but please remember that authorization to bid is not instantaneous so please plan ahead. HOW THE AUCTION WORKS Once you have a username and have received a buyer number then you are ready to bid. You will see a screen that is unique to your user ID. There will be a list containing the sale lots. If you click on a lot the video clip or photo will be displayed to the right. The next bid, current price, proxy bid, and manual bid buttons will be displayed below the video area. This page will react to your bids by stating, “you are in” or “you are out”. No one else will be able to see your bid – that data is not accessible to the public. Each time you login, the auction screen will display your personal bidding information. Your auction screen is unique and private displaying your activity to only you. Remember that you must have the lot that you are bidding on selected. This is where it tells you if you are in or out. It is here where you can also see your proxy (automatic) bid settings as applicable. WHAT IS A PROXY BID? With a proxy bid you can enter your maximum bid and then sit back and watch. When you enter a proxy bid amount the LiveAuctions system automatically bids on your behalf up to your maximum bid. If the lot closes out for less than your maximum, that’s all you’ll have to pay. This means that you don’t have to keep coming back to re-bid every time another bid is placed. This makes it more convenient and less time consuming. It can also greatly assists those breeders that can’t be near a computer or are busy with other duties at the time of the final bidding. Your maximum amount is kept confidential from other bidders and the seller. Even though you can see this amount on your screen no one else can. The LiveAuctions system compares your bid to those of the other registered bidders and the system automatically places bids on your behalf, using only as much of your bid as is necessary to maintain your high bid position. The system will bid only up to your maximum amount as necessary to maintain you as the high bidder. If another bidder has a higher maximum, you’ll be outbid and the system will tell you that “YOU’RE OUT”. But, if no other bidder has a higher maximum you win the final bid.
