The Port of Tyne announces record cargo volumes and record turnover for fifth successive year In 2013, the Port saw cargo volumes increase by 25% to 8.1m tonnes, and turnover rose 16% to £73 million compared to 2012. Andrew Moffat, Port of Tyne Chief Executive Officer, said that 2013 had been another record year, and looking back over five years, the Port had achieved substantial growth not only in the performance of the business, but also in the investments made in Port infrastructure, and in the impact the Port has had on the regional economy.
Over the last five years the impact the Port has on the regional economy grew by 38% to over half a billion pounds supporting almost 10,500 direct and indirect jobs that depend on a thriving Port.

News In Brief.... Concordia’s stern and bow are now detached from the false sea bed by about 1 meter, the Parbuckling team updated The wreck was floating thanks to the sponsons. Before being towed 30 metres East, the Concordia needed to be refloated for another meter. Technicians had to tightened the chains on starboard sponson S14, as planned. With the arrival of the ferry the final phase of the lightening of the Concordia wreck began.
As informed, only less than 1,000 tonnes of weight remained, out of the initial 30,000 tonnes; as soon as this step was completed, the wreck was lifted off the platforms. The refloating operations of Concordia wreck started later in July. The Senior Salvage Master, Nick Sloane, reached the Remote Operations Center located on the Concordia with the rest of the team.

During the first stage, the Concordia was refloated about 2 metres up off the platforms and moved 30 metres towards the east with the assistance of tugs. The ship was then securely moored and technicians completed the attachment and tensioning of the last cables and chains, and lowered the starboard sponsons to their final position.

The actual refloating then began, raising the ship one deck at a time, from deck 6 to deck 3. The whole operation took 7 days to complete and the Concordia departed from Giglio.
Pieter Schelte, the biggest vessel in the world, to be completed in the port of Rotterdam Owner and designer Allseas and the Port of Rotterdam Authority have signed an agreement to this effect. The plan is for ‘Pieter Schelte’ to arrive in Rotterdam at the end of 2014. ‘Pieter Schelte’ is 382 metres long and 124 metres wide. The length, in combination with the massive width, makes this vessel unique.

Rolls-Royce to power ice-breaking cargo ship A high-strength controllable pitch propeller from Rolls-Royce will be used to power a new ice-breaking cargo ship for Canadian company Fednav Limited. The ice-breaking bulk carrier will transport highly valuable nickel and copper concentrates from Canada, through the Arctic ice, to customers in Europe, and will have to contend with some of the most rugged Arctic conditions including hard packed shear ice and icebergs. The contract comes as Fednav Limited, one of the world’s largest operators of high ice-class vessels, has recently agreed a long term transportation contract with mining company Canadian Royalties Inc. for the shipping of concentrates from the Nunavik Nickel mine in northern Quebec. Rolls-Royce is a world leader in the design and manufacture of ice-classed propellers, and will supply a 6.5 metre diameter nickel aluminium bronze Kamewa propeller for the new vessel. The propeller will weigh 45 tonnes and will be powered by a 21.7MW, (or 29,000 horsepower) diesel engine.

The propeller will be mounted inside a steel nozzle, to give protection from floating blocks of ice while increasing thrust as the ship pushes its way through the ice. When travelling through open water, the ship uses a third of its power to travel at 13 knots, but when breaking through thick ice, it needs all available power to maintain a speed of three knots. The new ship, which has a deadweight of 25,000 tonnes, will be designed and built in Japan by Universal Shipbuilding Corporation. It will meet stringent design and operational requirements including a reinforced hull to allow it to proceed in continuous mode through ice up to 1.5 metres thick.

The Underwater Centre ‘bolts’ on new course The Underwater Centre at Fort William, has added a new course to its commercial air diving (CAD) offering, in response to the needs identified by industry. The ‘Introduction to Bolt Tensioning’ course will make an important and strong addition to the students’ CVs, furthering the range of tools and skills training they experience while on courses. The course, which will be included in all the diving packages – Premium, Construction and Standard – has been made possible by the donation of equipment by The Mechanical Services Department of Stork, highlighting that the subsea industry recognises the importance of giving students the right training for the job. ‘Introduction to Bolt Tensioning’ provides students with the knowledge and understanding of working with and using bolt tensioning equipment, which they can then use in their job – whether on the surface or underwater. Diving contractors and subsea operators need well trained and competent subsea personnel; the courses at the Centre are designed to ensure that when students qualify as commercial divers they are effective in their role and able to gain competency on the job as quickly as possible.

Harkand secures first work for Nexen
The contract marks the first piece of work Harkand has undertaken for the operator. The inspection scope covers the Buzzard, Scott, Telford, Ettrick and Rochelle assets in the central North Sea and includes infield pipelines and structures, export lines as well as some platform inspection. It will see the deployment of the Surf Ranger, which joined the Harkand fleet in May. The multi-purpose ROV, survey and air diving vessel will be equipped with high definition cameras, one work-class and two observation-class ROVs. David Kerr, managing director of Harkand in Europe, said: “Harkand is continuing to grow rapidly both in size and capability and we welcome our new partnership with Nexen.”

Protea Delivers T1500 Launch and Recovery System to Canyon Offshore Limited 2014 continues to be a busy year for Protea with the delivery of an advanced trencher handling system to Canyon Offshore Limited. Designed to allow the safe launch and recovery of Canyon’s latest trencher, the T1500, the 35t SWL launch and recovery system was recently mobilised on the Maersk Responder and is now operational in the North Sea. “We worked closely with the Canyon Offshore project team to develop a system that was tailored to their precise requirements and incorporated the key features they had specified based on many years of operating subsea trenchers. These included the ability to launch and recover T1500 in high sea states, rapid mobilisation and demobilisation on a range of support vessels and ease of operation and maintenance,” said Tomasz Paszkiewicz, CEO of Protea. The turnkey handling system was designed and manufactured at Protea’s modern production facility in Southern Poland and completed an extensive test programme before being shipped to the UK.

Overloading, weather contributed to 2013 fatal tug accident
On 10 May 2013, the Arctic Lift I developed a large list while being towed by the Western Tugger. The list may have been the result of several factors: water shipped on deck; down-flooding through
hatches that were not adequately sealed; possible damage to the barge en route resulting in water ingress; or because unsecured cargo had shifted, affecting the barge’s stability. As a precaution, the master wanted to be able to release the barge in case it sank. Although the vessel had an emergency tow release, it was not functional due to this secondary brake. The master directed a deckhand to the winch room to loosen a secondary brake which had been added to the winch to assist the main brake. Moments later, the forward end of the barge rose out of the water and the barge capsized. The resulting strain on the secondary brake drum caused it to shatter, and parts of it hit and fatally injured the deckhand.

The investigation also found that although a safety management system was under development, it had not been implemented prior to the occurrence.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada released its investigation report (M13N0014) into the capsizing of tow, and accidental death aboard the tug Western Tugger as it towed the barge Arctic Lift I, 33 nautical miles southwest of Burgeo, Newfoundland and Labrador. The report identified minimal clearance above the water (freeboard), bad weather conditions, and a non-functional emergency tow release as factors in the accident. One member of the crew of the Western Tugger was killed while trying to release the barge from tow.

An introduction to marine insurance for workboats and commercial vessels By Barry Abrams Marine Hull and Protection and Indemnity Insurance (P & I) for workboats operating commercially can be very complex and a specialist subject for most insurers, so it’s important that you get the right cover to protect you and your business. When obtaining quotations, all material facts should be disclosed to insurers such as previous claims or convictions, and any refusals on maritime licences etc. P & I policies can be covered under a mutual basis within a club or on a fixed premium basis, whereas the hull insurance is usually only insured on a fixed premises basis. A typical commercial hull policy will only cover ¾ of the value of the hull, referred to as the ‘Running Down Clause,’ the final quarter can be picked up under the P & I policy but must be
specifically requested. Also required is crew and passenger liability and it’s important that you do not exceed the numbers given to insurers without speaking to them first as this can invalidate all cover! Some smaller vessels such as fishing vessels under 15 metres in length can sometimes by covered under a yacht style policy which can accommodate the liability aspect within the hull policy. This method will save cost in premium as you do not then require the P & I cover in addition.
Legal liability, War & Strikes and Environmental Pollution Liability cover may also wish to be taken depending on your vessel type and cruising range. It should also be kept in mind that insurance is always only valid so long as your vessel and your business are up-to date with Health & Safety and MCA requirements. Increasingly, we are seeing a rise in vessel owners cutting corners on these issues and leaving health and safety as an afterthought where in fact it should always be a fore-thought, as you are not only putting lives at stake but also prejudicing your insurance cover for both the Hull and P & I. Correct reporting procedures should be put in place and where possible your vessel checked for irregularities and ensuring the vessel is safe & secure both under-deck and above, at every stop and ahead of periodic surveys. Performing these actions and being extra diligent can help insurers underwrite your risk more competitively and can reduce possible claims and incidents. The marine insurance industry is supported by world leading insurance companies that have the knowledge and investment to enhance policy security. We have seen some ‘offshore’ insurers trying to enter the UK market but business dealt with by those must be approached with caution. Consumers are encouraged to research the financial security of any insurance company they take a policy with; downfall in insurers can result in paid premiums being lost and jeopardy of claims being paid. Your broker should always be able to identify such risks for you but feel free to speak to ourselves directly if you have any concerns.

Will the banks ever really understand small commercial vessel marine finance? Sadly I don’t think so. If you were a first time buy to let landlord, they would lend you 90% loan to value on an asset, with no contract and on which you have no experience! If you wanted to buy a fork-lift truck or any land-based yellow metal, plant & machinery, you could take it out of the showroom for one payment, with the balance being another 59 similar payments. But ask a bank to finance a used tug or multi-cat, or even a new one, and you see the problem. Mention a dredger or a flat top barge and the banks go into hiding! So how do we get the banks to play in our sector? Why is it so hard to get finance on low depreciating, long life assets that if looked after and operated by a quality company, will last for years? As we all know, with the high street banks it is all a matter of form filling and box ticking. Add that very few of the banks have any real commercial marine experience and the problem just gets worse. Fact - only one high street lender still has an active small vessel commercial marine finance capability, delivered by a bespoke team in a marine specific unit. However they are not based on the coast and tend to focus on yachts and leisure motors.
The credit decision is usually made up of three components; the strength of your balance sheet, the value and commercial strength of the key asset and finally the credit story of why you want the asset. So remember these three - balance sheet, asset and story. The tier one or high street bank will want all 3 covered, but there are specialist Funders who will do deals provided they get 2 of the key factors. There are also ways of strengthening the proposals where you may only have one component covered. Balance sheet - very little you can do about that, apart from possibly bringing in a joint venture partner to share the asset The marine asset - the most important
ingredient, and one that can be used to help get the funding. It may surprise you to know that there are businesses that can take a position in the asset, behind the prime lender, which could retrospectively then provide the deposit. Ok, there will be commercial T’s & C’s associated with this funding method, but if the asset can get you a contract, then it could be a deal worth doing. Story - again a key component - why do you want the asset, and what can it earn
for you? Prove it is crucial to an overall project and things start to look better. It is the way you tell the story to the bank, and there is help out there. PC Maritime ECDIS enhanced for revised VDR Standards PC Maritime have upgraded their ECDIS so that it meets the requirements of the new VDR Performance Standard (MSC.333 (90) which came into force on 1 July 2014. From 1 July 2014 VDR installations must: * include the ability to capture ECDIS screenshots at least every 15 seconds, * record the charts in use at least every 10 minutes * record all changes of chart. This requires ECDIS manufacturers to enable the appropriate outputs from the ECDIS. Biodiesel engine launched One of the few engines available in Europe suitable for running on biodiesel has received its UK launch from diesel engine specialist Mermaid Marine. The Citius series of heavy duty engines from AGCO SISU Power is unique in being the only common rail engine available which is approved to run on 100% biodiesel. “The importance of biodiesel is continuously increasing with biodiesel such as rapeseed accepted as an alternative fuel for use in engines,” explained Mermaid Marine sales executive Julian Osborne. “The fuel – either 100% biodiesel alone, or in any mixture ratio with diesel fuel according to EN 590 or ASTM D975, can be used in all the engines which are equipped with a mechanic or electronically controlled injection pump.” AGCO SISU Power, formerly Sisu Diesel, was originally founded in 1942 and since then has produced engines known for their quality and reliability. The engines are built at the company’s main factory in Finland and comply with IMO 2 emission regulations and are future proofed for the forthcoming IMO 3 legislation.
The engines are available in four and six cylinder versions from 130hp to 410hp and are designed for extreme conditions from blistering equatorial heat to the harsh winters of Northern Europe. Direct injection technology, crossflow cylinder head, centrally supported cylinder liners – unique in engines of this size - and advanced turbocharger technology have been everyday features in SisuDiesel engines for decades.

The engines have been designed for reliability, low operating costs and easy servicing. Classic, sturdy basic construction is combined with new generation control electronics and modern injection system, producing an engine that meets even the most demanding user needs. In addition, the engines have been designed so that service points are easy to reach, explained Mr Osborne. “Fuel filters can be changed quickly without tools and fuel spill and spare parts are standardised between engine types which is of great benefit to owners.”
Cold start and cold running adjustments are controlled automatically depending on ambient and engine temperatures and a wide range of options mean the engines can be customised to a customer’s needs. Mermaid Marine is also increasing its Mermaid J444 (JCB) range to 11 models from 55kW / 74hp to 120kW / 160hp with the complete four-cylinder range available from September and future scope for a six- cylinder range using JCB’s newly launched six-cylinder industrial engine. JCB is probably the only major manufacturer reaching Stage IIIB (Tier 4 Interim)-anti pollution standards without particle filter or after-treatment of the exhaust gases, having addressed the issue of emissions at source. “JCB has invested many millions of Euros into developing its new combustion system,” Mermaid Marine sales executive Malcolm Pratt explained. “It’s probably the cleanest engine on the market with no after treatment needed for the exhaust which is a big advantage.”

Latest Meercat is powered by Doosan The latest Meercat has been launched for Conwy Harbour Authority, for use as a port service vessel. The monohull vessel Jac Y Do measures 14m by 5m and is powered by twin Doosan L136 six cylinder heavy duty engines each developing 160bhp / 118kW @ 2,200rpm, supplied by WaterMota. The vessel has been built to serve several uses including general harbour maintenance, doubling as a fully operational dispersal dredger while also being suitable for secondary fire control. James Lewis, General Manager, Meercat Workboats, explained: “She’s a truly versatile workboat capable of many different roles from port service to dredging.” Specifications for the vessel included a bow thruster, firefighting capabilities, full dredging spread with hydraulic cutter and jetting head, Iron Fist 17 t/m crane and hydraulically operated spud legs. The eight litre Doosan engine – marine rated to ISO 3046 – benefits from direct-injection via a mechanical governor. The engine is naturally aspirated without turbocharger or intercooling with this simplicity making it a firm favourite with users who want an engine with good torque characteristics which falls below the 130kW EIAPP certification requirement. “The L136 is a very traditional, cost-effective, non-complex marine diesel engine,” explained WaterMota Sales Manager, Tony Fryer. “The ‘flat’ torque and horsepower curve make it
ideal for the fishing and workboat market. “The engine has a proven history having been in production in
various forms for at least 15 years and very economical in service with reports of it being more economical than engines it has replaced. There are many examples of engines in the field which are more than ten years old which have never been overhauled.” He added: “It’s naturally aspirated for maximum longevity and in addition, the maintenance is very simple.” Other equipment supplied by WaterMota includes two PRM 1000 gearboxes each with a 3:1 reduction and a clutched PTO drive and a JMP 1.5in 24 volt bilge/deckwash pump.

As a solution to the vibration and noise problems caused by misalignment in long-span drive shafts, flexible coupling and drive specialists, Centa Transmissions, has continued to develop their innovative carbon fibre shafting initiatives. Foremost in this is the highly versatile and super-lightweight CENTADISC-C composite coupling and carbon fibre shaft, designed to span distances of 10 metres and more, without the need for intermediate bearing support. Very often it’s the support bearings on long shafts that cause problems as they do not allow for flexibility in the ships structure, their rigidity restricting shaft movement which in turn, causes vibration. This vibration then results in excessive noise and premature wear on the drive components. That’s why the specification of a long tubular shaft which does not rely on intermediate support results in a quiet, efficient and highly reliable marine transmission system.

Tubes, in general, have a better stiffness to weight ratio and with lower weight tubes you benefit from faster rotation, or longer spans with more torque. Consequently, the larger the diameter of the tube the better the weight to stiffness ratio will be, resulting in a smoother, more economical drive system. In effect, the designer can engineer a tube specifically for the application based on length, speed and power transmission, removing any redundant weight common in steel shafting. In situations where there is a requirement for a long span drive, the use of a carbon fibre shaft provides the perfect solution, particularly in the hull of large catamarans with staggered engines. These shafts also allow placement of large engines further forward in the vessel, transferring the centre of gravity to a more favourable position, for example, in luxury super yachts, ferries, workboats and other marine craft. In practice, this means that where a distance of several metres would have previously been bridged using flexible couplings and a steel shaft supported by multiple pillow blocks, a lightweight
carbon fibre shaft will ‘hang’ freely between engine and gearbox, unimpeded by supports and with its flexible connections acting as a double cardanic joint. Other benefits of utilising a long carbon fibre shaft are that they integrate well within the increasingly flexible hulls of modern vessels, particularly aluminium; they require minimal maintenance and provide a robust, torsionally stiff, corrosion resistant and sound absorbing answer to transmission vibration and noise; as well as compensating for axial, radial and angular misalignment.

MIT launch Transfluid Hybrid System With the focus on the development of more ecological products, MIT is now introducing a new Transfluid solution for low to medium power for marine and industrial applications. With their many years experience manufacturing a wide range of power transmission equipment and electric motors/ generators, Transfluid invested in Research & Development to develop this hybrid system that can easily integrate into traditional propulsion system. MIT will be selling this within the UK and Irish markets. Designed to fit between the engine and transmission, occupying limited space, the Hybrid System becomes an integrated and independent implement in the propulsion driveline. Ecological sustainability is one of the main advantages of Hybrid solutions but fuel savings and energy management are of equal importance. With the “booster” function, designers can consider a lower power engine yet still maintain the desired performances. Ship owners can retrofit their vessels thereby providing lower costs and profiting from immediate benefits. The Transfluid hybrid system works in three specific modes: • electric propulsion to drive or sail at zero emissions and in absolute silence • engine propulsion using the electric machine as a generator to recharge the batteries • “booster” function allowing the electric motor to assist the engine during acceleration, in providing extra toque in the driveline
How It Works The input side is a hydraulic or pneumatic controlled clutch. When disengaged, the engine is disconnected from the rest of the driveline allowing the vehicle or vessel to be operated by the electric motor instead of the engine. During engine operation, the clutch is engaged and the electric motor becomes a generator, recharging the batteries. By operating the engine and electric motor at the same time, the “booster” operation is engaged, increasing the total available power to the driven machine. All operations are controlled via a proprietary electronic controller MPCB-R5, which communicates with all equipment through Can Bus protocol, making the system a simple “plug and play” solution.

Arbil assist with Titanic anchor move The doomed luxury steamship, RMS Titanic, set sail from Southampton on 10th April 1912 destined for New York. However she never arrived. Her sinking on 15th April 1912 after hitting an iceberg is one of histories most notorious events. Built in the UK; with many of the ships parts, including the famous anchor developed in the Black Country, local residents and councils wanted to honour this iconic ship by recreating an exact copy of her anchor, televising it in a documentary on Channel 4 and finally putting it on display in Netherton; the town the original anchor was forged in. With over 16 tonnes worth of anchor to be displayed, supporting the anchor would not just be a simple task of propping it up. The local council took the decision to mark the occasion of the replica anchor being created, with a public display; with the anchor travelling the reverse route it took in 1911, from Netherton to Dudley. Channel 4 was made aware of the event and it showed great interest and featured the occasion in a documentary. A1 Rentals was contracted the job of moving the anchor from Dudley and then arranging its display in Netherton. This was when Arbil was contacted. Andy Towns, General Manager at A1 Rentals explains, “We have been a customer of Arbil’s ever since our business came into existence, often using them for hire purposes. As initially the anchor was only to be temporarily on display in Netherton we decided to hire 50 tonne jacking stands from Arbil to support and hold the anchor on display. We ourselves only received just over a week’s notice of the details for this job, so we were really up against it in terms of time. This was when we got in touch with Brian at Arbil and he quickly designed and turned around a support to bolt to the jacking stands to hold the anchor in its temporary home” After the initial public display and use in the documentary the
council took the decision to store the anchor at the Black Country Museum. However, after reviewing just how much attention this replica anchor had gained; the decision was made that it should be on permanent display. A1 rentals was then contacted again for its services to undertake this. Towns explains, “After discussing the requirements with Arbil we came to the conclusion that a bespoke stand would be more appropriate and also more cost effective in the long-term than the previous jacking tool solution. We were confident that Arbil could turn this round for us in the limited timeframe we were given.” Due to the turnaround time, Arbil set to work quickly. Initial drawings were produced of the stand design, which had to be approved by the council’s engineering department as they had commissioned this job. Once approved, work then got underway. Brian Timmington, Arbil’s General Manager of Manufacturing and Engineering commented, “As soon as the anchor arrived in Dudley for the initial display and documentary, we went straight to site to take detailed measurements to develop the original support stand for the jacking tools to precision accuracy. As we already had these measurements from the first job, it meant we could set to work straight away once the need for a permanent stand arose.’ Timmington continues, ‘The permanent stand was developed out of solid steel with a triangular groove in the top for the anchor head to be placed in. A1 Rentals had inserted a metal support under ground where the anchor was to be displayed and our stand was to be bolted into this. A1 Rentals had also arranged for a mobile crane to lift and place the anchor on the day of the move.’ Timmington continues, ‘My grandfather worked at the Noah Hingley & Sons Ironworks back when the original Titanic anchor was forged and so I had a great personal interest in this job, I was more than happy to give up my time, free of charge on the day of both moves, to oversee the transportation to our stands. Witnessing the documentary filming was also a great experience.”

Harken Industrial designed a solution for sliding seats using existing products which allowed their customer to reconfigure the cockpit layout quickly and easily. The seats are mounted on four cars that run on parallel tracks. Two cars have pinstops that secure them into holes in the track. The two remaining cars are free to slide along the track. To adjust seat location, the two pinstops are released and the seat slid into the next position. The gaiting track allows the user to easily remove, adjust, or change the seating units. These products protect against the corrosive effects of salt, dirt, and grit, ensuring efficient operation without binding. This system is specifically designed to handle the marine environment and to provide a flexible cockpit seat layout, with fast, hassle-free reconfiguration and is tested to over 2000 kg (4409 lb) to ensure the installation meets HSC regulations.

Largest GRP workboat under construction Build work has recently started on the largest GRP workboat in the market today. The SH50 is a 15m multi-purpose work boat, created to be used for many applications with the design suitable to be adapted for many workboat purposes including as an OSV, a platform supply vessel, an interisland workboat or for carrying deck cargo. The vessel is the first Seahawk Workboats design, created in response to demand for larger multi-purpose vessels and is currently being constructed at Seahawk’s yard in Plymouth, Devon. “There are less maintenance issues with GRP and upkeep is much reduced,” explained Dan Stevens of Seahawk Workboats. “It’s the first GRP workboat being built of this size, we can’t remember the last time a boat of this size was designed in GRP. “There are boat builders which are building boats of this size in steel which needs a lot of maintenance. GRP has fewer maintenance issues and improved longevity.” He added: “We’ve designed the SH50 as a very robust design which can be

adapted and built to suit a wide range of applications. We’ve had much interest in the design and currently do have build slots available. “We are fully audited by the MCA so all construction and outfitting complies with the MCA Workboat Code of Practice and also Seafish construction standards.” The vessel has a wave piercing bulbous bow providing good waterline length and bilge keels allowing her to be beached if required. Other features include a fuel capacity of 8 tonnes which can also be configured to carry up to 15 tonnes, six holds suitable for storing cargo in excess of 40 cubic metres, a 360 degree tug style wheelhouse with excellent visibility, a bow and stern thruster, Hercules Hydraulics package, five bladed single screw prop for quiet running and a full suite of navigation equipment. Accommodation is provided for four crew in a single cabin with a galley area, separate toilet, shower and lobby area. SH50 has a 6.25m beam and 3.13m draft and is expected to achieve around 12 knots of boat speed.
The vessel will be fitted with a WaterMota supplied Doosan turbocharged and intercooled, 15 litre V8 cylinder, V158TIH, heavy duty, continuously rated marine diesel engine developing 480bhp (353kW) @1800rpm, arranged for keel cooling with sea and fresh water pumps and header tank. The engine (marine rated to ISO 3046) benefits from direct-injection, mechanical variable speed governor system and water cooled turbo chargers with an intercooler. WaterMota is also supplying a D-I reversing gearbox with 4.04:1 RR, D-I hydraulic power take off 1:1 for direct coupling to the forward end of the main engine and JMP 2.5in x 24 volt bilge/ deckwash pump and a D-I power single rudder steering system including steering wheel. “Doosan’s larger engines such as the V158 are very popular with workboat and fishing boat owners,” said Mike Beacham, MD of UK Doosan distributor WaterMota. “The engines are very cost-effective and in demand, favoured for their reliability and unsophistication. The engines have good power to weight ratio and are up to 20% lighter than many competitors in commercial heavy duty applications without any sacrifice of reliability.” The engine (marine rated to ISO 3046) also benefits from direct-injection, mechanical variable speed governor system and water cooled turbo chargers with an inter-cooler. A WaterMota assembled, Doosan powered marine generating set / power pack is also being supplied which includes an AD136T turbocharged six cylinder 8.1 litre marine diesel engine developing 145bhp / 107kW @ 1500rpm designed for keel cooling, flexibly coupled to a Mecc Alte alternator and a hydraulic pump close coupled to the flywheel end, all mounted on a common bedframe. SH50 is due to be delivered later this year.
Back in the 1980’s it really came as a shock to the Maritime community in Kent and around the country in general when, after 400 years in operation, Chatham Dockyard closed. The Navy pulled out and thousands of workers lost their jobs. But, from that dark day, the local community fought back – gradually, and today the future is much much brighter. Cutting edge technology will provide customers with a reliable high quality glazing service
Fincantieri Marine Group (FMG) subsidiary, Bay Shipbuilding Company (BSC) of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, has been awarded a USCG contract for drydock repairs to the United States Coast Guard Cutter Hollyhock (WLB-21) and a second USCG repair and sustainment contract for the icebreaker Mackinaw (WLBB-30).
The UK’s leading marine window and door manufacturer, Seaglaze have set up an in-house glass toughening plant; they have invested in innovative machinery to provide customers with a high quality and complex glazing product and to tight deadlines. This will enable customers to reduce potential vessel downtime because the manufacturing process does not rely on an often unreliable supply chain. Seaglaze started double glazing and digitally printing on their premises in Norwich in July to manage increasing requirements. The manufacturer has taken on 5000 sq ft of new premises next door to their existing purpose built factory. New machinery is currently being installed.
“We are extremely pleased with both of these new contracts which are a testament to the very fine work performed by the BSC shipbuilding team over our long association with the United States Coast Guard,” said FMG President and CEO Francesco Valente.“Fincantieri’s recent capital investment in BSC, included the construction of a United States Navy-certified floating drydock, will be instrumental to the repairs.”

Hollyhock is a Juniper Class Seagoing Buoy Tender measuring 225-feet long. The Mackinaw is a 240-foot heavy icebreaker for operations on the Great Lakes. Both ships were built by FMG subsidiary, Marinette Marine Corporation (MMC), and launched in January 2003 and November 2005 respectively. Hollyhock’s primary missions are maintenance of aids-tonavigation, as well as search and rescue, environmental protection and ice breaking. Mackinaw is primarily engaged in keeping the sea-lanesclear of ice although it also serves as an aids-to-navigation ship. In May of 2014, Sturgeon Bay was officially designated “A Coast Guard City.” Sturgeon Bay, which has a 140-year relationship with the Coast Guard and its predecessor services, is now one of 16 cities designated by Congress with that distinction for support shown to the men and women of the Coast Guard.

Kongsberg to supply advanced Offshore Simulator Heerema Marine Contractors (HMC) has selected Kongsberg Maritime’s K-Sim Offshore simulation platform to enhance crane operator training and the safe, efficient implementation of heavy lift operations. With the contract signed on May 21st 2014, delivery of what will become the world’s most advanced offshore heavy lift crane simulator is planned for September 2015. It will be installed at a new simulation center in the HMC Academy at the company’s HQ in Leiden, the Netherlands. As a leading international offshore oil and gas marine contractor specialising in transporting, installing and removing
offshore facilities, HMC’s requirement when selecting its simulation partner was to develop a system that could train the most competent crane operators and conduct detailed pre-mission training for heavy-lift projects. Simrad MX575D uses RTCM correction data supplied by its internal beacon demodulator or SBAS to achieve the high-level of accuracy. HS80A can use SBAS corrections to achieve DGNSS accuracy. The MX575D and HS80A are IMO compliant and approved for both navigation and heading functions. In addition, both compasses include integrated gyro and tilt sensors that decrease start-up time and provide heading updates during any temporary loss of satellites. “Simrad MX Series customers expect the highest level of reliability and accuracy from their navigation systems,” said Leif Ottosson, CEO, Navico. “By including GNSS sensors as well as DGPS and SBAS, we are able to proudly deliver products that professional mariners can feel comfortable and confident in staking their careers and even their lives on.” The Simrad MX521B Smart Antenna, and HS80A and MX575D DGNSS Compasses are available now. Ultrasonic antifouling system The ‘Sonihull’ ultrasonic antifouling system from NRG Marine Ltd was originally designed for pleasure boats, but has now been enhanced specifically to cater for commercial vessels and super yachts. Sonihull is an environmentally friendly and cost effective anti-foul system designed not just for hulls, thrusters and jet drives, but also for sea chests, raw water piping and heat exchangers. It is also very effective for suppression of diesel bug and keeping stored water fresh. A real break

savings from a cleaner hull, less wear and tear on mechanical systems and longer periods between haul outs. Sonihull used in conjunction with normal anti-foul paint not only kills algae and prevents barnacles from growing on the hull, but also enhances the performance and longevity of the paint by keeping the pores of the paint clean so that fresh anti-foul can be released, even whilst the vessel is stationary. Although the concept of using ultrasonic technology for keeping a boat hull clean is a relatively new application, the actual concept of ultrasonic cleaning has been around for over 30 years in such applications as dentistry, jewellery cleaning and clearing drains.
