All states had more than 20% of adults with obesity.

20% to less than 25% of adults had obesity in 2 states (Colorado and Hawaii) and the District of Columbia.

25% to less than 30% of adults had obesity in 19 states.

30% to less than 35% of adults had obesity in 22 states, Guam, and Puerto Rico.

35% or more adults had obesity in 7 states (Alabama, Arkansas, Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and West Virginia).

The South (32.4%) and the Midwest (32.3%) had the highest prevalence of obesity, followed by the Northeast (27.7%), and the West (26.1%).

The History of Weight Loss Surgery: In the 1950s, bariatric surgery had a very slow start with the intestinal bypass also known as anastomosis. This process connected the upper and lower intestine to bypass the greater portion of the absorptive circuit. The malabsorption of food and calories resulted in weight loss in the patient.

Drs. J. Howard Payne, Lorent T. DeWind and Robert R. Commons then created the Jejuno-colic Shunt in 1963 to connect the upper small intestine to the colon. Dr. Edward E. Mason (b.1920) and Dr. Chikashi Ito conducted laboratory research in 1965 at the University of Iowa which eventually resulted in the development of the original gastric bypass which enhanced the safety of the procedure and decreased intestinal bypass post-operative complications.

Dr. Edward E. Mason is therefore recognized as the father of weight loss surgery.
