The Impact of Giving Celebrating philanthropy at MLC

The Impact of Giving

Celebrating the generosity of our community I extend my sincere thanks to all in the MLC community who have generously supported our various programs during another challenging year: the Chair and Directors of the MLC Board, my colleagues on the College leadership team, current and past staff, current and past parents, Old Collegians worldwide, and our students and friends. Our inaugural Giving Day alone, on 1 June, raised four times the previous Annual Giving average. This was truly affirming and reinforced the compassion and commitment from all members of our community in wanting to enable future students to attend MLC. I know that our entire community joins me in looking forward to welcoming our future students on Principal’s MeansTested Scholarships; made possible through your generosity. It has been particularly heart-warming to receive genuine messages of appreciation and goodwill from current parents and Old Collegians – for the education, the opportunities and the support enjoyed by our current and past students while at MLC. Your generosity enables us to continue to build on the principles upon which MLC was founded: diversity, equity and social justice – thank you.

Ensuring a strong future Everywhere we look we see evidence of the generosity of our donors, enabling excellence in education.

As Chair of the MLC Foundation, the fundamental importance of community has never been more apparent to me than during this pandemic. What continues to sustain us all is our strength of connection with those we love and care for, including our College community. This was greatly evident on our inaugural Giving Day!

Community matters Claire Rogers — Chair of the MLC Foundation

I am so thankful to everyone who shared messages of encouragement and connection as they gave generously of their personal resources to enable students of financial disadvantage to have access to an MLC education. We cannot make these programs available without your kind support. Thank you too, to all those who have supported the important work of the MLC Foundation in 2021, helping to ensure that the College remains at the forefront of education with innovative programs and excellent facilities. The MLC Foundation exists to develop and promote a rich and enduring culture of philanthropy within the MLC community, aligned with the Strategic Plan, to ensure the College’s strong future. MLC Foundation Committee members play an important networking, advisory and advocacy role as well as giving their own financial support to the College. MLC Foundation membership is extended to all donors who have given $5,000 or more, over time. We remain grateful to our 353 Foundation members — listed in this publication, and on the Foundation honour boards outside the James Tatoulis Auditorium — for their ongoing and loyal support. We also look forward to welcoming the 16 new members for 2021, as soon as we can do so.

Nurturing a culture of philanthropy Sue Felton — Director of Advancement In this edition of the Impact of Giving, and in spite of the maelstrom which continues to provoke uncertainty and unpredictability around us, we are delighted to share some powerful stories of philanthropy. As you flick through these pages, I know you will be impressed and inspired by MLC’s collective kindness and generosity.

Meet the Advancement Team

My favourite definition of the mission of philanthropy is:

To give people the gift of the opportunity to do something of value, potentially something transformational – to touch the lives of those they may never know. Our commitment to providing more means-tested scholarships to girls who could not otherwise access an MLC education was, and remains, steadfast. We were overwhelmed by the support received in the lead-up to and during our inaugural Giving Day on 1 June, raising $351,756 overall. It was a privilege to hear some intensely personal and poignant testimonials on the day itself from former Old Collegian scholarship recipients. Heartfelt thanks go to our generous matching donors, including our Foundation Patrons, the Old Collegians’ Club and the Parents’ Association, and many new donors. Please see pages 6 & 7 for a full Giving Day report. We also recognise MLC’s Deaf Integration Program, now celebrating 35 years. The story on page 9 reflects deep personal gratitude, resulting in a transformational gift from a benefactor who recently approached us, keen to assist our current and future Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and their teachers. Thank you to all who supported Principal’s Means-Tested Indigenous Scholarships this year. We hope you will enjoy hearing from our Indigenous Programs Co-ordinator Lucy Amon, on page 9. Finally, stewardship and building stronger relationships have been a key focus for us during 2021. We are excited to launch our brand new donors’ circle in 2022, to acknowledge and honour all those who have made a gift of $1,000 or more in a given year. We look forward to providing further information later this year.

MLC’s first Giving Day Our inaugural Giving Day, held over 24 hours, was an enormous success, with more than $350,000 raised for Principal’s Means-Tested Scholarships.

Thank you to everyone Moya Barclay — Advancement Manager

What did the MLC community achieve?

$351,756 raised (four times the average raised for scholarships over the past 10 years)

547 donors – 204 new Increased participation in giving

Gifts from $10 to $30,000+ Representing philanthropy at every level

Student participation The youngest donor giving in her own right was a Year 10 student. A number of students from Prep to Year 12 gave online with their families

The Impact of Giving

Our sincere thanks to all donors who supported MLC’s first Giving Day on 1 June, in aid of Principal’s Means-Tested Scholarships. The Giving Day showed the ‘heart and soul’ of MLC in that, even in the midst of the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic, our community wanted to support others who may not otherwise be able to come to the College. There was a collective desire to see MLC continue to do what it does best—educate girls from diverse backgrounds and equip them to be the leaders and citizens the world needs. What was different this year? The MLC Giving Day was an online campaign conducted over 24 hours, replacing the traditional Annual Giving appeal which ran over several weeks. A multi-channel campaign leveraged social media, email and video as powerful tools to promote the event, building community awareness and excitement. Donors saw their own gifts, and those of others, instantly doubled by our team of generous matching donors ‘waiting in the wings’. Donors could choose to give with one of the four School teams and leave a comment as they made their gift. As the campaign rolled out in real time over the course of the day, it was very exciting to see our goal of $250,000 achieved, extended to $280,000 and then surpassed — prompting a spontaneous online shower of confetti and balloons! Gifts continued to come in overnight and next morning before the Community Giving Day was declared ‘over’. MLC was the first school in Australia to feature its Giving Day message in Mandarin as well as in English. Tax-deductible entities set up in Hong Kong, the USA and the UK enabled donors to give in their local currencies. Members of our College Board, MLC Foundation Committee and the College Management Team led the way with their generous support and encouragement. Our valiant team of volunteers called fellow parents and Old Collegians to encourage them to make a gift. The whole Giving Day experience was exciting, fun and highly successful.

MLC families support inaugural Giving Day Cathie Ireland — Head of Junior Secondary School

The Junior Secondary School (JSS) was excited to join with our other three Schools in support of MLC’s first Giving Day. We wanted to help more girls from a range of backgrounds to come to the College and join us in Years 7 and 8. As the area of the College where most scholarship recipients begin their MLC journey, JSS supports their education and personal development and we benefit from the talents, interests and perspectives they bring – it’s a win-win situation! Despite the lockdown called just prior to the Giving Day, I was delighted to see the strong level of support via the online giving platform by our JSS parents, students and staff. As a member of MLC’s Scholarships Committee, I have taken part in the selection of scholarship recipients for 2022 and am really looking forward to these students joining MLC next year.

The Impact of Giving

Adelaide Wood (2017) vividly recalls the day she was awarded the Dr Wood Scholarship. “I was lost for words. I felt so incredibly lucky that I would be able to continue my education at MLC.” “The greatest gift I received from studying at the College was exposure to the many opportunities which allowed me to discover my passions and to pursue them. Through my involvement in the Anti-Poverty Committee, I realised my passion for sustainable international development and youth empowerment and pursued this by volunteering at Oaktree (Australia’s largest youth-led international development organisation) and UN Youth Australia.”

“MLC is a unique environment where students can try anything without limitation, face challenges head on and always dare to dream,” Adelaide says. After leaving MLC, Adelaide completed a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Melbourne. She is looking forward to taking up the role of strategy analyst at Accenture in January next year. Adelaide concludes: “I will always be incredibly grateful for the generosity and kindness of strangers who have allowed me, and many other students before me, to receive the gift of an MLC education.”

Lynda Exell, one of the Teachers of the Deaf, signing in class

News on our Indigenous Programs Since the start of 2019, almost $133,000 has been received in donations from members of the College community towards Principal’s Means-Tested Indigenous Scholarships at MLC. Thank you for your generous support – in particular to those who have given to support our students in 2021. With the pandemic bringing constant change, the College has continued to support our students’ learning through its Continuous Learning and Wellbeing program. The students have followed their regular timetables and participated in their cocurricular programs. One of these is the Connecting to Country group, where staff and students engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. In September we celebrated National Indigenous Literacy Day, with a live streaming event hosted by bestselling author and descendant from the Goomeri and Yuwalayaay people in southwestern Queensland, Gregg Dreise. The day also featured 50 short video stories highlighting the rich, diverse multilingual world of First Nations peoples, while several works by Indigenous authors were made available by the Walton Library as eBooks. Lucy Amon, our Indigenous Programs Co-ordinator, comments: “ This year we have 11 Aboriginal students at MLC, ranging from Years 7 – 12. Some are Day School students while others are Boarders. They come from many different Communities across Australia, including Koori (Victorian) students from Monero (Lakes Entrance), Gunai Kurnai (East Gippsland), Wurundjeri (Melbourne) and Yorta Yorta (Murray and Goulburn River) and also Larrakia Country (greater Darwin region).”

“Our students have shown a great deal of resilience throughout a very challenging Term 3. We have been able to maintain contact with them all and I am immensely proud of the way they constantly rise to the occasion. I look forward to seeing them all back onsite in the very near future.”

Inspirational gift for our Deaf and Hard of Hearing students Lynda Exell — Deaf Integration Program Co-ordinator

The MLC Deaf Integration Program is now in its 35th year. It grew from a visionary idea that, given the right planning and support, Deaf or Hard of Hearing students could learn alongside hearing students in a school that promoted achievement for all and celebrated individual differences. With 18 students currently, and with 68 having graduated, our program continues to be unique in catering for both signing and oral deaf students from Prep to Year 12, to assist them to reach their full potential. We are extremely grateful to our generous benefactor who recently enabled the installation of acoustic augmentation throughout the College. The project saw Soundfield systems installed into 46 classrooms, and Roger Wall Pilots in 21 rooms, in the Centenary, Cato and Nevile buildings and the David Loader Centre, providing acoustically treated learning spaces for current and future students and teachers. Soundfield systems are an exciting teaching tool which benefit all students in the classroom, including students with a hearing loss. The Soundfield system equalises acoustic access for all students to create an atmosphere in the room that is conducive to listening, with sound evenly distributed throughout the room to reach every student as the teacher’s voice is simply heard over background noise. It is of course of great benefit to anyone with a hearing loss as it increases sound by 15-20 decibels, however the systems also offer huge benefits to teachers in their daily role by reducing voice strain and preserving speech clarity. We are incredibly fortunate to have this technology available throughout the College and recognise the positive contribution this makes to Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, to enhance an already inclusive education at MLC.

A gift in your Will Bequests, regardless of their size, provide a lasting benefit to future generations of students and help the College plan with confidence. A gift in a Will is one of the most meaningful contributions that a person can make.

Stella Argentea Society Maria Mercuri — Associate Director, Advancement

MLC is built upon a heritage of giving. Leaving a gift in your Will is an especially effective and enduring way to make a lasting impact on the College’s future, enriching the lives of future generations of students. Importantly, bequests allow MLC to plan ahead with confidence to enhance our world-class learning environment, and to provide life-transforming opportunities for our students. Bequests of all sizes are welcome. The Stella Argentea Society was established in 2004 to recognise and honour the generosity of those who have chosen to leave a gift to MLC in their Will. Membership is open to anyone who confirms in writing their intention to leave a bequest to MLC. The Society’s name, meaning ‘silver star’, celebrates the College’s most iconic symbol. Supporting education for women and girls Carolyn Brown OAM (Allen 1961)

Carolyn is passionate about education and providing opportunities for women. After leaving MLC, she went on to hold many roles focused on women, in particular with Girl Guides Victoria and Inner Wheel Australia. Carolyn fondly recalls her years at MLC under Principal Dr Wood and says his insistence that girls and young women should realise their full potential has guided her throughout her life. As a young girl, Carolyn would listen to Dr Wood speaking with passion and intensity. “He would raise his arm, with a pointed finger, and almost shout, ‘if women realised their potential, the hand that rocks the cradle could rule the world’, wiping his brow with his handkerchief. ‘We weren’t quite sure whether he was perspiring or the roof of the old Fitchett Hall was leaking!’ ‘It is so important for girls to have a well-rounded education – MLC gave this to me, as well as lifelong friends whom I cherish to this day,” says Carolyn. “I feel that it is so important that we give to the future generations of women the opportunities that the previous generations have had.” Carolyn was prompted to leave a bequest in her Will because:

The Impact of Giving

“If it only affects one life, my life will be even more meaningful. I encourage all former MLC students to join with me in leaving their own legacies.”

Dr Colin Goodwin: MLC in aeternum

Kind gifts … in kind: The College Archives

In 1968, Dr Colin Goodwin was recruited to MLC as a Latin teacher by Rev Ron Woodgate (or ‘RAW’ as staff affectionally called him). He taught here for six years – and loved every minute of it.

Philanthropy is not only expressed through the donations and pledges that support students and programs — many members of our MLC community also generously give of their time and talents to the College, as speakers, mentors and volunteers. Others make gifts ‘in kind’ of various items from their school days that hold a special place in their hearts. The MLC Archives were established in 1960 to ensure that the history and memories of the College were preserved for future generations. Our collections hold many of these artefacts and memorabilia thoughtfully donated by Old Collegians and their families, as well as a range of College administrative records and photographs from the 1880s to today.

Colin kindly supported students experiencing financial hardship in 2020 and 2021, and recently indicated a gift to MLC in his Will. When asked what prompted this wonderful generosity, Colin quoted the American Jewish philosopher, Mortimer J Adler:

“The aim of education is the liberation of the intellect from ignorance and its cultivation as a critical instrument.” Colin continued: “The College is a superb centre for liberating intellects from ignorance and cultivating them as critical instruments. This is so because of the wide range of appropriate subjects on offer to students at every level, and the exceptional coterie of highly qualified, professionally skillful, and deeply committed teachers who work with the students. The upshot of this is that, within a framework of socialising interaction, there exists a community of teaching and learning wondrously capable of actualising the cognitive potential of MLC students towards the goal of distinctively human flourishing.”

An example of a recent gift comes from Hazel Nsair who has donated many items collected by her late cousin, Patricia Trevare (Holt, 1945). Pat enjoyed attending Old Collegians’ Club events and reunions over the years. Items from her estate include some wonderful photos from the 1930s and 1940s, an MLC teacup and saucer, badges, event programs and exercise books. One of the photographs is pictured here. Our Archivist, Stacey Coenders, is busily working through the many items that have been given to the College during the pandemic. She would like to sincerely thank everyone who has kindly contributed to the MLC Archives over the years. If you are considering donating items, please email Stacey at archives@mlc.vic.edu.au to discuss whether your items could become part of our treasured collections.

“It really concerned me that parents might have to pull their daughters out of MLC because of the pandemic and I wanted to do something to support them, by giving to scholarships. My decision to leave a bequest in my Will for buildings, libraries and the MLC Archives was to provide indispensable support for the teaching and learning activities of the College. I would encourage others to consider supporting MLC’s future.”
