GIVE THE GIFT OF AN MLC
Thank you for your interest in leaving a bequest to MLC in your Will. A gift to the future of students’ education is one of the most meaningful and empowering contributions you can make – one that helps us, in a very practical way, to inspire young women to be the citizens our world needs. ‘To establish a modern school of the first order, a collegiate institution for girls unsurpassed in the Colony’ – this was the aspiration of the College’s founders in 1882. Based on Christian principles, MLC would deliver, for girls, an education comparable with the very best enjoyed by boys at that time. With an over-arching goal to nurture and develop every individual student so that she will leave school with the necessary skills, knowledge and values to live her life as a ‘world-ready woman’, MLC has been at the forefront of education ever since its foundation, and continues to set the benchmark for excellence and innovation in education. The College is built upon a heritage of giving. Over the years, so much has been achieved through the generosity of many successive generations of families and alumnae – the MLC Community. Leaving a gift to MLC in your Will is an especially effective and enduring way in which you can make a lasting impact on MLC’s future, enriching the lives of generations of women to come through the power of education. Importantly too, bequests allow us to plan ahead with confidence in our quest to continually enhance the College’s world-class learning environment – an environment that offers life-transforming opportunities for our students. We encourage you to consider leaving a bequest to MLC in your Will and warmly invite you to discuss your wishes and intentions with our College’s Advancement Office.

MLC welcomes bequests of all sizes. Every bequest makes a lasting and meaningful difference, supporting the College’s vision for the education of young women into the future. It is simple to add a provision for a charitable gift in your Will. You may choose to define your bequest as: • • • •
A percentage of your total estate A percentage of the residue of your estate Specified assets A nominated sum of money
A Will provides you with the opportunity to direct how your estate is to be distributed to those people and organisations that are most important to you and reflect your personal values. We recommend that you discuss your intentions with your family when planning your bequest, and that you seek independent legal and financial advice when preparing or updating your Will. The College is committed to sound financial management and careful oversight to ensure that your gift is managed and administered in accordance with your wishes.

The Stella Argentea Society was established in 2004 by the MLC Foundation to recognise and honour the generosity of those who have chosen to leave a gift to MLC in their Will. Membership of the Stella Argentea Society is open to anyone who confirms, in writing, their intention to leave a bequest to MLC in their Will. The Society’s name, meaning Silver Star, celebrates MLC’s most iconic symbol. Members of the Stella Argentea Society maintain a close and enduring connection to MLC through an annual lunch or dinner, special events, advance tours of new facilities and other activities. Your generous gift will also be recognised in selected College publications unless you wish to remain anonymous. While we encourage everyone who has included MLC in their Will to notify us, we understand that some may not seek recognition. If you have chosen to remember MLC in your Will and would like to join the Stella Argentea Society, please complete the enclosed form and return it to the College in the reply-paid envelope provided. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact our Advancement Office on + 61 3 9274 6308.

How do I make a bequest to MLC?
Can I change my mind?
After you have considered your wishes for your loved ones, please consider a gift to MLC in your Will. In making your bequest, it is recommended that you speak with a legal professional to ensure that your intentions are expressed in such a way that they will take effect exactly as you wish and intend.
Yes, of course. Sharing with us your current intentions is not legally binding in any way.
I can’t give much – is it still worth leaving a bequest to MLC? Absolutely. We are grateful for any size gift, large or small. Your generosity is invaluable and will have a lasting, positive impact regardless of the amount. I would like to leave a bequest to help a specific group of students. Is this possible? Some bequests are targetted to assist a specific group of students – for example, students in financial need or those from a rural area. In order to ensure that your gift will be as effective as possible in the long term, we do suggest that you speak with our Advancement Office about your wishes before preparing or updating your Will.
How does the College manage the funds received from bequests? The College adheres to best practice financial management and governance practices. The MLC Board is responsible for oversight of the College’s financial management and the responsible investment of funds. Where funds are established in perpetuity, an annual assessment of investment returns and drawdown of funds is considered to ensure the ongoing maintenance of these funds into the future. The College, working closely with the MLC Foundation, is committed to careful oversight to ensure that your gift is administered in accordance with your wishes.
Do I need to notify MLC if I plan to leave a bequest? It is not essential, but we do encourage you to notify us so that we can gratefully acknowledge your intentions and keep you up to date with regular communications, and also so that you will have the opportunity to join the Stella Argentea Society.

Dr Wilkinson AM (1945) describes her MLC education as a life-long gift that not only sparked her love of learning, but which has continued to inspire and motivate her throughout her life and career.
“I feel passionately about giving girls of the future the same opportunities I had at MLC – the freedom to learn, to participate and to be inspired by a marvellous atmosphere and educational environment.”

A LASTING
For many people, a bequest is the most powerful and meaningful philanthropic contribution they will ever make. A gift in your Will to MLC will provide a lasting benefit to future generations of students and help us to plan for the College with confidence. Whilst tuition fees cover the cost of day-to-day operations, they do not allow for the constant development, refreshment and enhancement essential to the delivery of MLC’s educational vision for its students. Thus the MLC Foundation was established in 1998 to foster and encourage the spirit of philanthropy and enable the College to continue to develop its facilities, create innovative learning spaces and provide scholarship opportunities for those who may not otherwise be able to afford an MLC education. Bequests to MLC typically support one of the following areas: GENERAL UNRESTRICTED PURPOSES
BUILDINGS
To ensure that MLC can continue to provide excellent facilities for outstanding teaching and learning. LIBRARIES
To ensure that the physical and digital collections contribute to the development of our students and foster a love of reading and life-long learning skills. ARCHIVES
To safeguard the integrity and significance of the College’s historical and cultural collections which document the progress of MLC and women’s education in Australia. A bequest left to MLC in your Will helps to ensure that we can continue to provide the very best education for our students for generations to come.
To offer the life-changing opportunity of an MLC education to girls who may not otherwise be able to attend the School.
You may, if you wish, choose to specify the area(s) to which you would like your bequest directed. Bequests may be endowed in perpetuity (where the College only uses an agreed percentage per annum) or applied entirely at the time the gift is received, or at the discretion of the MLC Board of Directors.
• • • • • •
If you are considering leaving a more specific bequest, we encourage you to speak confidentially with our Advancement Office so as to ensure that your wishes can be fulfilled, and that your gift will have the impact that you intend.
