PRINCIPAL

Principal, Diana Vernon discusses the ImmerseMe languages software with Year 7 students (L-R) Anya Savundra-Shepherd, Holly Wyld and Wendy Luan.

Whether at school, at work, indoors or outdoors, in familiar locations or in those that are new, we can all attest to the impact our surroundings have on our learning.

The power of ‘place’ to help foster meaningful learning is the subject of an increasing body of educational research, backed by insights witnessed every day in school environments. Here at MLC, we continually see the impact that MLC Marshmead and MLC Banksia have on student learning about the environment and sustainability. While students can of course learn about these topics in a classroom, the impact of being ‘in situ’ makes learning real and long lasting. Building on such understandings, MLC’s new Year 7-8 Learning Centre will provide a range of state-of-the-art, flexible indoor

and outdoor spaces designed to enhance both learning and recreation. These include a rooftop terrace and the newly opened Principal’s Terrace, featured on page 4. It’s extremely exciting to watch these new spaces develop and to look ahead to the fabulous experiential learning and social opportunities they will shortly facilitate for our students. Travelling to new places can also deliver rich and powerful learning, with many MLC students experiencing this first hand in 2018. As you will read on page 10, our choristers performed in some of the world’s most admired musical venues during their European Choir Tour, where they travelled to Amsterdam, Paris, Munich and Salzburg. Simultaneously they learnt about the culture and the history of the cities in which they performed. Additionally, in recent months many of our students have participated in MLC’s language, cultural and overseas tours and programs, visiting a range of countries including Hong Kong, China, Japan, Singapore, Vietnam, Tanzania, the USA, the UK, France, Germany, Austria and Spain. Students have shared with me their feelings of awe and wonder at experiencing some of the world’s great cities as well as seats of learning such as Cambridge and Harvard Universities.

While such opportunities are indeed enriching, high calibre classroom learning remains vital and today, we are fortunate that technology can deliver powerful augmentation of such environments. At MLC this year we have been privileged to be among the first schools in the world to implement innovative languagelearning program, ImmerseMe, which allows students to step into ‘virtual’ locations that bring classroom language learning to life by enabling authentic conversations to take place. Content and dialogue for this incredible technology has been developed by our very own Head of Languages, Chloe Briand. In this edition of The Star we spotlight the power of learning spaces in their many guises. From our dedicated study spaces for Senior School students (page 12) to the online platform provided by MLC’s learning management system, Canvas (page 15), our students have access to some of the world’s most inspiring school learning spaces, as well as opportunities to experience learning in exceptional local and international environments. I hope you enjoy this edition of The Star. Best wishes, Diana Vernon, Principal

major factor in the garden’s design, which also includes raised areas suitable for group learning and an amphitheatre for teaching and performance.

Located in the heart of the College, the new Principal’s Terrace garden has been designed as a multi-use space, inspired by New York City’s Central Park with its large swathes of green, crossed by many pathways.

The original Principal’s Terrace garden featured diversity of tone, texture and colour in its plantings, and this theme has been translated to the new garden. Arrays of colour and seasonal change plantings have been incorporated, with many established trees retained in the new space.

The notion of a terraced landscape drove the garden’s design, which features integrated paths, seating, steps and a water rill that runs along the east to provide visual interest, a sense of discovery and a soothing soundscape.

Situated in Victoria’s far east, MLC Marshmead’s remote natural setting allows students to develop a deep understanding of the environment and sustainability. Traditions such as Good Morning Marshmead – the gathering of the community to welcome the day – help students appreciate the power of natural surroundings to positively impact the body and the mind.

MLC’s beautiful front gardens are popular with students of all ages. The gardens feature the iconic MLC fountain, erected in 1885 and intended by founding Principal, Dr W H Fitchett to add to the school’s “cheerfulness and beauty”. The stunning elm trees framing the Krome Memorial Gates are more than 100 years old.

In the months ahead, MLC’s Oval will be resurfaced to include next generation synthetic turf, line-marked for multiple uses including netball, tennis, hockey and athletics.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR MLC’S OUTDOOR SPACES?

MLC’s new Year 7-8 Learning Centre includes a roof terrace. This outdoor space for Junior Secondary School students will be fully landscaped and will include a mix of exposed and covered areas to provide opportunities for both recreation and learning.

“MLC Junior School offers an exciting and stimulating environment that encourages girls from an early age to take ‘positive risks’ around learning and leadership, public speaking and finding their own voice.” Heather Littlejohn, Head of Junior School

Head of Junior Secondary School, Heather Littlejohn and Deputy Head of Junior School, Deb Krumples.

Supported by a team of more than 30 teaching and educational support staff, girls in Junior School experience a leading academic education where the development of 21st century skills is a focus and core values including service, empathy and resilience ensure students embark confidently on their journey to becoming world-ready women.

In addition to enjoying a leading classroom environment, girls in MLC’s Junior School receive exposure to a vast array of specialist programs including music, library, public speaking, language club and performing arts. Mentor teachers support the girls to run studentled groups such as book clubs and art workshops during lunchtimes.

Heather Littlejohn has been Head of Junior School since 1999, stewarding the girls through their formative years of education and, together with Deputy Head of Junior School, Deb Krumples and their teaching and educational support colleagues, she aims to instil a life-long love of learning.

Deb emphasises the importance of Junior School’s student leadership framework, which begins in Prep and includes roles on the SRC (Student Representative Council), citizenship awards, class captains and Year 6 leadership opportunities.

“MLC Junior School offers an exciting and stimulating environment that encourages girls from an early age to take ‘positive risks’ around learning and leadership, public speaking and finding their own voice,” says Heather. “All Junior School staff are committed to nurturing the very best in each individual student. We support every girl’s pathway to success by developing her sense of self-worth and confidence. Our staff have an incredible range of skills and are focused on developing the ‘whole’ child.”

The diversity of the MLC Junior School community also lies at the heart of its success. “We are privileged to enjoy a true feeling of community here,” says Heather. “Teachers, support staff, students, parents and families are united in their enthusiasm to do the very best for every girl, every day.”

Deb acknowledges that one of the biggest challenges in raising and educating young girls is the topic of responsible digital citizenship. “We see technology as an integral component for current and future learning, however at MLC it is integrated carefully alongside the development of valuable interpersonal skills and higher order thinking,” she says.

TO JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL

INTRODUCING HEAD OF JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL

Cathie Ireland What attracted you to the role of Head of Junior Secondary School? MLC’s reputation as an innovative and forward-looking school was a big drawcard. Working with students in Years 7 and 8 has always been a big passion for me too, so I was excited by that aspect of the role.

What are the differentiators of an MLC education, as you see them? The enormous breadth of opportunity at MLC is a huge differentiator. A wonderful part of my role is having a personal interview with every new Year 7 student before she starts at MLC. Our Year 7s have

wide-ranging interests and personalities, however when I meet them I can always see how they will find their niche at MLC. With such breadth across our curriculum and co-curricular program, there’s truly a place for every girl here.

How does the College support students who join MLC in Year 7? The simple answer is: in lots of ways! We have an incredible Junior Secondary School team who ensure our Year 7s are supported to thrive. Programs like our Year 7 camp at MLC Banksia, our House program and the Student Representative Council (SRC) also help students get to know one another and form important social bonds.

team is collegial, professional and has a clear and united vision for the school. I also love the student and staff diversity at MLC.

I feel fortunate to have arrived at the College as the Year 7-8 Learning Centre is taking shape. Seeing this wonderful new environment for our students come up from the ground has been breathtaking and I can’t wait to move in!

What are you most enjoying about your role as Head of Junior Secondary School? I work with an amazing team, both within JSS and more broadly. MLC’s leadership

What has been your experience of being new to MLC?

Did you know anyone when you started at MLC?

What primary school did you come from?

Coming along to the orientation day helped me feel at ease about starting Year 7. The encouraging teachers also helped me settle in.

I did know one other girl from my primary school. Having all the Year 7s together in the Wood Building has made it easy to make new friends though. I think the new 7-8 Learning Centre will make it even easier to get to know other Year 7s, and Year 8s too.

I came to MLC from a primary school with just 100 students. I am boarding at MLC and have loved making lots of new friends this year.

What have you found different about secondary school? MLC has so much space, with amazing facilities like the Walton Library and the Star Café. I also like using Canvas, MLC’s learning management system, to stay organised and keep on top of assignments and homework.

What have been the highlights of your first year at MLC? My biggest highlight was going on the Cape York Cultural Tour. It was a chance to meet people and see parts of Australia that I didn’t know much about.

What advice would you give students who are looking ahead to Year 7 at MLC? If you don’t know anyone, don’t worry because when you start a new class you quickly make friends! I think I will keep making friends throughout all my years at MLC.

What are your favourite subjects? It’s hard to choose, but I’d have to say Drama and Design Technology. I also love learning in MLC’s cool science labs. There’s a big focus at MLC on each individual student and how we are going in our classes, which I like.

What has been the highlight of your first year at MLC? A highlight for me has been playing GSV netball and competing against teams from other schools.

What advice would you give students who are looking ahead to Year 7 at MLC? Try everything, and don’t be stressed about making new friends or which class you’re in, because it will all sort itself out and you’ll have a really good time!

What’s it like being an MLC boarder? It’s amazing! I share a room with two other Year 7s, one from Wangaratta and one from Hong Kong. I have also made many boarding friends in older year levels.

What have been the highlights of your first year at MLC? Doing gymnastics with the MLC Gymnastics Club! The gym with its sprung floor is one of my favourite places at MLC. I have also enjoyed trying diving.

What advice would you give students who are looking ahead to Year 7 at MLC? Your Home Group will be a really supportive place where you will quickly make new friends and get to know people in your year level. Also, get involved in House activities to meet friends with similar interests.

The famous Notre Dame was our second performance location, which was an incredible opportunity. We also performed at the American Church in Paris, where we were welcomed with open arms.

European Choir Tour 2018 After almost a year of preparation, a group of MLC girls from Years 9 to 11 left Melbourne on 23 June 2018. Our destination? Europe, where we would perform in a variety of locations, finishing with the famous Summa Cum Laude festival. Our first stop was Amsterdam, where we toured the city before performing at the English Reformed Church, settling us into the routine of concerts. We then took the train to Paris, where we managed to do lots of sightseeing at places like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, along with a lot of shopping!

Our next stop was Munich, where we explored the city before performing in the small and especially friendly town of Ohlstadt. We also travelled by bus to Salzburg, and gave an impromptu performance in the Sound of Music church, along with our actual performance on the night before our departure to Vienna. In Vienna we performed at the Haus der Musik, but this time, we participated in a competition in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein, an amazing building. We were on edge, but we competed to the best of our ability, and made friends with a few other teams along the way. Despite coming sixth in our category, our spirits were still high enough to finish our final performance with flying colours.

The European Choir Tour was an extremely enjoyable and non-stop experience for all involved, and was definitely a trip to remember. Erin Chan, Year 9 student

Celebrating 24 years at MLC Marshmead A familiar face for students past and present, MLC Marshmead’s farm manager, Pete Peisley, is hanging up his boots after 24 years. Pete has been a creator, an innovator and a cornerstone of MLC Marshmead from almost the very beginning. Cattle, sheep, the poddy program, the poultry program, Pete’s Patch, orchards, cork trees, mini projects and large projects...so many past staff, past students and of course current students cherish their memories of Pete very dearly. The MLC community warmly thanks Pete for his wonderful management of the MLC Marshmead farm over almost a quarter of a century and extends to him all the very best for the future.

Melissa is committed to creating a Middle School environment where students feel safe, happy and can flourish in every aspect of their lives.

Middle School students launch new clubs MLC students are actively encouraged to take the initiative. This ethos has been particularly evident in Middle School this year, where students have proposed and realised the establishment of two new student clubs/committees: the Chinese Culture Committee and the K-Pop Club.

Year 10 students, Frances Fleming and Melissa Yew, were inspired to found the Chinese Culture Club after they participated in MLC’s China Exchange Tour. “When we came back we wanted to keep going with some of the cultural activities we enjoyed while we were in China,” explains Melissa. MEET HEAD OF MIDDLE SCHOOL

Melissa Lange A familiar face at MLC, Head of Middle School, Melissa Lange recently stepped into the role from her previous position as Head of Junior Secondary School. “It’s been an exciting year, shifting my focus to students in Years 9 and 10,” she says. “It’s a different part of the College but with many similarities too, as MLC’s deep culture of learning and opportunity is present across every area of the school.” A dedicated educator with a passion for both academic endeavour and personal wellbeing, Melissa is committed to creating a Middle School environment where students feel safe, happy and can flourish in every aspect of their lives. “Encouraging student voice is a big part of our philosophy in Middle School. We encourage questions, ideas and initiatives from students and support them to turn their vision into reality.”

“We want to educate ourselves and others about Chinese culture and language through fun and interactive games,” adds Frances.

K-Pop Club founder, Year 10 student Estella Koce, says she was hoping to create a place where students with a shared interest could meet and communicate. “K-Pop is renowned for its singing and also its dancing, so as well as discussing K-Pop, we have sessions where we learn some of its iconic dances,” says Estella. The Chinese Culture Committee and the K-Pop Club are additions to MLC’s extensive range of student-driven clubs and committees, which cover all manner of interests from literature to politics to coding.

“This year a group of students wanted to create a vodcast as an additional way of welcoming new Middle School students to MLC. They put together a proposal and the result of their efforts is a fabulous, student-produced vodcast that adds to the warm welcome students receive when they join the College in Years 9 or 10.”

“In Middle School, students are actively supported to get projects like this off the ground, and that’s one of the many things I love about it.”

INSIDE 12HQ

The Year 12 common room is shrouded in mystery and as a Year 11 student, I am excited about using 12HQ and finally finding out what it holds after my seven years at MLC.

MLC Music Prefect and current Year 12 student, Mei Wah Chan, says she also felt intrigued about 12HQ. “The most exciting thing about 12HQ was its status as a dedicated space for Year 12s only. I was also looking forward to the privilege of using the room,” Mei Wah says. When it comes to revealing what actually goes on inside, Mei Wah remains tightlipped. “That’s for everyone to find out when they hit Year 12!” she insists. In my experience, all Senior School students are protective of their special privileges, but Year 12s take protectiveness to a whole new level – even when I briefly stepped inside 12HQ to be in the photo with Mei Wah for this publication, I felt the questioning stares.

By way of explanation, Mei Wah tells me, “The common room allows Year 12s to have a space to recoup, and it’s definitely handy in terms of supporting each other and being able to find people easily.” “12HQ is a place to ‘unite’ so to speak – it’s somewhere where we can just bond with each other, catch up, study, eat, nap…you know, all the important things!” Mei Wah’s clear adoration and extensive praise makes me extremely eager to make use of 12HQ in 2019, and to finally experience its magic after all these years! FOR LEARNING IN SENIOR SCHOOL

To help students successfully navigate their final year of school and achieve their best, MLC’s Year 12s have access to dedicated study and social spaces, specifically designed to foster a culture of personal endeavour and success.

Spaces including the Year 12 common room (otherwise known as 12HQ), the Judy McKenzie Reading Room for silent study in the Centenary Building, and the Quantum Lounge in the David Loader Centre, are special places that are highly valued by MLC girls in their final year of school. “These spaces have been designed and furnished to be inviting. They contribute substantially to student outcomes by providing an environment that helps develop a shared focus on study,” says Head of Senior School, Anne Wallington. “From observation I see a real uplift effect within these environments, as students receive motivation and moral support from those around them who are also striving to achieve their personal best in Year 12. They also help nurture the special sense of inclusion that comes

with being a Year 12 student at MLC,” says Anne. According to current Year 12 student, Katherine Lihoudis, having spaces especially for Year 12s helps build a sense of connectedness within the year level. “The big table in 12HQ makes it easy to relax with a large group, but there are also smaller nooks where you can focus more easily on getting work done. Silence is strictly observed in the Judy McKenzie Reading Room, so it’s a great place where we can go to concentrate.” “From the minute I entered Senior School I was looking forward to the privilege of using 12HQ, the Reading Room and the Quantum Lounge,” she says. MLC teachers and educational support staff work hand-in-hand to deliver highly relevant, engaging learning experiences that meet student needs in an era of rapid social and technological change. “This is only possible thanks to our focus on continual improvement and ongoing, personalised staff professional learning,” explains Director of Staff Development and Research, Chris Wintle.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT:

Together with her team, Chris coordinates a wide-ranging professional learning program focused on advancing the College’s educational offering, developing professional practice, building staff capacity and above all, improving learning opportunities for each student. “Excellence in staff at MLC is a core priority for the College,” says Chris. “The primary purpose of our professional growth model is to improve the learning of all learners – both students and staff.” Teachers have choice in a vast array of professional learning opportunities including collaborative sessions sharing practice, classroom observation and self-reflection, research projects, digital networks and training modules, conferences and seminars as well as presentations and workshops led by educational innovators and thought leaders.

Engagement with leading educators and educational researchers is routine at MLC. All teaching staff are involved in at least one research project, some of which are partnerships with local and international universities and organisations. “One example is our current work with Deakin University to trial the use of self-captured video to improve teacher self-reflection, professional practice and learning outcomes for students.” Anchoring MLC’s professional development program is the College Learning Statement.

“The primary purpose of our professional growth model is to improve the learning of all learners – both students and staff.” Chris Wintle, Director of Staff Development and Research

“We work strategically with the MLC Learning Statement, focusing on the five key elements we value in learning at MLC: curiosity, critical thinking, creativity, relationships and diversity of achievement. MLC teachers also involve students in the professional learning process by seeking student feedback on the learning experience and valuing their input in learning design.” “Importantly, professionally learning occurs in a multi-layered approach with teachers, teams and strategic directions. This allows us to embed outcomes into MLC’s curriculum and the learning experiences for our students.”

Today’s online environments can support rich and personalised teaching and learning, and to this end, the College introduced a powerful new learning management system (LMS) called Canvas in 2016.

“Teachers meanwhile, can more easily monitor individual students’ progress and tailor their program accordingly.”

According to E-Learning Co-ordinator, Marylou Monaghan, Canvas enhances student learning by making content delivery, engagement, assessment and feedback more tailored and accessible than ever.

Director of Dramatic Arts, Dana Duncan, and her team enjoy using Canvas in creative ways, always with the goal of providing more diverse learning, teaching and assessment opportunities.

“The Canvas interface is intuitive and very easy to use and includes features similar to many of the digital platforms students are already familiar with,” explains Marylou. “The platform helps students to hone the digital and communication skills they will need throughout their lives beyond school.” “Within Canvas, our students can access diverse subject content and tools for learning including quizzes, videos, presentations, online discussions and assignments. They can progress their learning anytime, anywhere, moving ahead at their own pace or reaccessing content to increase or cement understanding. They can easily check their progress in a subject, with feedback and assessment information readily accessible via the platform.”

ME AND MLC

The breadth of sporting opportunities on offer at MLC is extensive. Involvement in sport is a passion shared across the MLC community, and it’s something students continue to enjoy long after they leave school.

Superb first season for the Old Scotch Stars MLC’s new, alumnae-based AFL team, the Old Scotch Stars, burst onto the scene in 2018, making it to the grand final in its very first season. The team, which is made up of predominantly former MLC students, as well as some current students and nonMLC affiliated players, competes in the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). “The Old Scotch Stars was born as a result of the shared desire of MLC staff, students and parents to provide a pathway for girls to continue playing AFL,” says team coach, Ryan Duke, who founded MLC’s football program and has coached the GSV side to seven out of eight premierships since 2011. The team uniform combines Old Scotch colours of red and yellow with MLC green and a prominent white star.

Pictured above: The Old Scotch Stars and the senior MLC GSV AFL team come together for a special combined training session.

“From our very first game we were a force to be reckoned with, coming from behind to beat Old Brighton Grammarians who had been very dominant in the previous season. We only lost two games all season and came close to winning the

grand final,” says Ryan, who credits the Stars’ success to its ‘team first’ culture. The Stars have enjoyed support from MLC parents who have cheered them on in large numbers each game.

For team captain, Anna Hayes (2016), being part of the Stars has been a chance to play with friends and familiar MLC faces and to continue playing a sport she loves. “We have a real pathway now for MLC students to continue playing AFL once they finish school,” says Anna. “The Stars had an awesome first season and there’s a lot of talent in the team. I’m looking forward to next year!”

MLC swimmers dominate again

As a Junior School liaison committee member of FOSS (Friends of Snow Sports), parent Andrew Ward has a unique perspective on the positive impact of supporting the MLC snowsports team.

The MLC swim team is the most successful GSV team at the College, having won every GSV Division 1 Championship Carnival since its inception – 18 years in a row! The team features both elite national and state swimmers, but also includes recreational and club swimmers, bringing a range of backgrounds and experiences to this popular team. This year the finalists who competed at the GSV Finals Evening won a total of 10 gold, six silver and seven bronze (total 23) medals to finish atop the medal tally.

“FOSS provides opportunities to get involved, to build social and professional networks as an MLC parent, and to meet new people who share your interest,” says Andrew, whose love of skiing is shared by daughters Amber (Year 5) and Ashley (Year 8). “It’s been rewarding to be part of FOSS for the past six years. During this time MLC’s snowsports team has grown considerably, as has the sense of camaraderie and team spirit.”

The games were very competitive and our students showed great improvement across the tour. The netball team came away with two wins and the hockey team had two wins and a draw. Each game was followed by an after-match function where our students met new friends and developed an understanding of different cultures and lifestyles. On rest days, the girls were lucky to engage in many sightseeing activities, exploring all that New Zealand had to offer!

“Rowing is a sport where hard work is rewarded and where there’s an incredible culture of unity and camaraderie,” says Kate, a former MLC boarder and qualified PE teacher who has coached MLC’s junior rowers for the past 10 years. “MLC’s rowing program is very successful and very popular, with almost 200 students involved in 2018. A lot of the coaches are former students, who help pass down our strong and supportive culture from year to year.”

of my closest friends. Being part of Berry enabled me to meet more girls within my year, as well as older girls who have been a support to me over the years.

When you’re an MLC student, your House becomes your familiar island in a multi-coloured ocean, a place to enjoy the camaraderie of your fellow House members when it comes to sport, music, drama or debating. I am a proud member of Berry House, named after Henry Berry. Our namesake was a salt merchant and early MLC parent, as well as a noted philanthropist. The ‘purple pride’ that I came to possess started when I was four years old, seeing my sister wear her purple House top and purple zinc for sports days. I initially thought that the Berry mascot, a turtle, was perhaps not the most athletic animal when up against the yellow Fitchett lion, the Cato blue bear, Nevile’s pink panther or the Krome green frog. Nevertheless, the thing I have learnt about being part of an MLC House is that we are not defined by our colour or our mascot. Instead, we are defined by the energy, teamwork and support that we each bring to our Houses. (And who can forget The Tortoise and the Hare?) As I look back at my years at MLC, the times that stand out the most invariably involve House activities, often with some

Being part of my House has also allowed me opportunities to develop my skills as a leader. I have been honoured to be the Head of Houses Prefect during 2018, and have worked hard to promote House spirit to girls younger than me, even introducing a new whole-school cheer for house spirit! As Head of Houses, it has been a real privilege to don the rainbow cape at house events and bring all five House communities together in friendly competition, strengthening the bonds of our amazing school.

Libby Gates (Lavender 1971) attended MLC from Prep until graduation. When it came time to choose a school for her daughters, Sally Hall (Gates 2001) and Louise McKechnie (Gates 2003), she and her husband Lindsay considered several options.

“When we went to MLC’s open day and I heard the school song playing from a music room, all my wonderful memories of being an MLC student came flooding back and I knew instantly: I want my daughters to go to MLC, too.” Libby’s positive recollections of her school days include a fond reverence for larger than life former Principal, Dr Wood, being part of the choir and participating in House events. “House events were highlights for us too,” recalls Louise. “Teacher Alan Mapp played an integral role in encouraging involvement in House activities. Participation across all aspects of the House program led to the formation of many longstanding friendships with fellow Fitchett girls. Being nominated by peers as Fitchett prefect in Year 12 was a great honour.”

Louise include language-learning, spending a term at MLC Marshmead and the social aspect of travelling to and from school on public transport.

“Walking into Fitchett Chapel on our wedding day was such a special moment, and reminded me how grateful I am for my MLC education,” says Sally. “Louise and I have both been so fortunate in our careers and friendships, which is thanks to our parents sending us to MLC.”

INTERGENERATIONAL MLC FAMILIES:

THE

All three women credit MLC for equipping them with leading-edge skills. “The digital skills we acquired through MLC’s pioneering laptop program made a huge difference when Sally and I left school,” says Louise, who works in healthcare communications.

The family’s strong connection to MLC was reinforced this year when Sally and her husband, Brenton Hale, followed in Libby and Lindsay’s footsteps and were married in Fitchett Chapel.

“Doing the International Baccalaureate at MLC opened many doors for me,” says Sally, who now works as a paediatrician.

“We were married by Dr Wood in Fitchett Chapel and I was delighted when Sally and Brenton chose the venue for their own wedding,” says Libby.

DIRECTOR OF LEARNING SUPPORT

Beth Gerondis “MLC was an early adopter of an integrated approach, where learning support is delivered via the mainstream curriculum. We find this approach works beautifully for students, helping them achieve high levels of personal success.”

A committed and experienced educator, Beth Gerondis is passionate about facilitating effective learning pathways for all students. “MLC is a proud, open entry school and our learning support program reflects this, with the department supporting students from Prep to Year 12,” says Beth. “Our programs provide support for hearing impaired students and students with learning challenges or specific learning needs. We also deliver the Compass program for gifted and talented students and provide programs for students whose first language is not English.” “MLC was an early adopter of an integrated approach, where learning support is delivered via the mainstream curriculum. “We work cohesively as a College to meet the individual needs of each student. It’s a privilege to enable students to learn in an environment that truly meets their needs and to witness their learning progress throughout their years at MLC.”

We are delighted to profile the following members of our community, who have generously chosen to donate to the MLC Foundation. Thanks to our many donors, the MLC Foundation continues to actively support the needs of current and future generations of MLC students.

Helen Williams (1961)

How did MLC prepare you for your life beyond the school gates? I came to MLC in Year 9, from a Victorian country town. It was exciting to be in the big city, and also to attend the same school as my grandmother, whom I had adored and revered. I blossomed at MLC, with its incredible choice of subjects, dedicated teachers and culture of academic endeavour. I developed new confidence and self-assurance – these have been important attributes throughout my life.

What motivated you to make a donation to the College? MLC is a school that keeps on giving. As a past student I continue to benefit from my enduring circle of school friends, and from opportunities to attend College events including reunions, the Annual Chapel Service and lunch, and the Annual Foundation Gala, which I enjoy immensely. To be still benefiting from my MLC education in my senior years is so special – why wouldn’t I give back to MLC?

ready women, MLC requires financial support as the costs of providing an outstanding educational environment are significant. I hope all past students will consider donating to MLC as a way of giving back to their school that gave them so much.

“MLC is a school that keeps on giving. As a past student I continue to benefit from my enduring circle of school friends, and from opportunities to attend College events.”

What role do you think philanthropy plays in the success of MLC? As the lyrics of our school song attest, the ‘vision splendid’ for MLC continues. With its enduring focus on developing world-

Scholarship opportunity

Stephen is an MLC Board member and MLC Foundation committee member, while Chunnie is a Year 10 class representative.

What motivated you to donate to MLC? Education is important to us. We recognise that our daughter has benefitted from the legacy of former parents who donated to MLC. Now, it’s our turn. We are supportive of the College’s future direction, and the many projects on the horizon that require community generosity. Working together and leading by example, MLC parents can help ensure the best possible outcomes for the College.

As parents, we believe contributing in this way helps create a strong and supportive MLC family and improves the educational experience for our daughter. Where have you directed your donation? We haven’t been specific, however we are particularly supportive of MLC’s scholarships program. We have been lucky to be able to provide exceptional educational experiences for our children, and recognise the power of scholarships to provide opportunities to students who many not otherwise have the chance to attend MLC.

What role do you think philanthropy plays in the success of MLC? We know that the fees we pay are largely absorbed by day-to-day running costs, yet the school’s immediate future has a large need for community support.

We support MLC’s ethos of developing ‘worldready women’ and see philanthropic action as a way of giving young women, including our daughter, first class opportunities to achieve their very best in life. Pictured above: (L-R) Stephen, son Ethan, daughter Olivia (Year 10) and Chunnie Adrian.

The recent Silver and Green Foundation Gala (see page 28) will have a direct and very positive impact on the life of one future MLC student, who will now be able to attend the school on a means-tested scholarship from the funds raised at the Gala. “Thank you to all our wonderful supporters and sponsors who, together, helped raise $56,000, which will provide a significant contribution towards enabling a girl to attend MLC on a Principal’s Scholarship. This generosity is part of the MLC spirit. We look forward to welcoming her to MLC in 2019,” says Principal, Diana Vernon.

OCC PATRONS

MLC’s Old Collegians Club is thrilled to announce the appointment of Patrons Fran Keller (Woolhouse 1948) and Anne Scott OAM (Simpson 1957). OCC Patrons hold a special position within the MLC community, acting as ambassadors for the College and its alumnae, wherever in the world they are located. A teacher at MLC from 1973 – 1990, Fran Keller (Woolhouse 1948) touched the lives of many students, particularly in her role as the inaugural Head of MLC’s Junior Secondary School, to which she was appointed when MLC’s four schools were established by former Principal, David Loader.

Fran Keller (Woodhouse 1948) and Anne Scott OAM (Simpson 1957).

As a student, Fran boarded at MLC during the 1940s, while her daughter attended the College during the years she was on the school’s teaching staff. Fran joined the Old Collegians’ Club when she finished

her secondary education and served as President in 1986. Anne Scott OAM (Simpson 1957) attended MLC from the age of six until she completed her Leaving Certificate. Her daughter and granddaughter are also past students. Anne served on the OCC Council for almost 20 years, including as its President from 2009 – 2010. Anne says her long history of community contribution – beyond MLC she has made an enormous impact on the Girl Guides Association/Guides Australia, International Guiding, The Order of Australia Association and Rotary International – reflects the life lessons taught at MLC and Dr Wood’s famous reminder that “from those to whom much is given, much will be required.” Both women are looking forward to their continued involvement in the life of the College.

Melbourne’s best restaurants, holiday packages, clothing vouchers, event passes and even the chance to pilot a Qantas jet flight simulator with Principal, Diana Vernon.

In a tangible demonstration of the strength and vibrancy of the MLC community, parents, staff, benefactors, alumnae and College suppliers responded enthusiastically to the Foundation’s new event format, with tickets to the Gala quickly selling out.

The MLC Foundation extends sincere and heartfelt thanks to the many members of our community who supported the Gala by donating auction items. Major sponsors, friends of the College and generous suppliers helped make the night a special and truly memorable occasion.

One of 2018’s Beef and Burgundy dinners.

Beef and Burgundy celebrates 10 years

(L-R): Claire Rogers, Kate Torney and Liz Walker speak at Women Inspired.

PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION EVENTS

These are just a few of the enthusiastic comments received following the newest event on the Parents’ Association calendar, the Women Inspired dinner, which was held at The Boulevard in Studley Park, Kew. The event – a dinner dedicated to the women of MLC – celebrates the diverse and inspirational community of women within our parent body. It was attended by mothers from Prep right through to Year 12, as well as a number of female staff including Principal, Diana Vernon and Senior Vice Principal, Margaret Horton.

Inaugural Women Inspired dinner a huge success “What a wonderful event. I’ve been raving about it and all those I chatted to loved it as well.” “A night to be remembered. It had every characteristic of success where the entire room was in the space. Superb speakers and genuine conversation at the tables.” “A beautiful event, thoughtfully put together with a wonderful energy.”

The event’s name – Women Inspired – reflects the desire to inspire guests, while at the same time acknowledge that each one of us is inspirational in our own way. Speakers – RSPCA Victoria CEO, Dr Liz Walker and World Vision Australia CEO, Claire Rogers, together with MC Kate Torney, CEO of the State Library Victoria, were drawn from the many, many inspiring women within the MLC community. They gave honest and entertaining reflections on their lives and careers, embracing both success and failure as a way to grow and learn.

The recipe behind MLC’s highly successful, bi-annual Beef and Burgundy night is simple: come together twice a year with fellow MLC dads, dine on a quality steak and top drop from your cellar, while enjoying a riveting guest speaker in a comfortable and inviting atmosphere at the College. Over the last decade it has proven a firm favourite on the MLC Parents’ Association’s ‘menu’ of social events. The joy of the evening is connecting with more dads and building a strong community around our daughters. Tables are typically made up in year groups with a warm welcome extended to first time attendees. There is certainly a pride in being part of this community and seeing it develop such a strong following. The fact it always sells out is testament to the allure of the event. Our first guest speaker this year was Australian Grand Prix CEO Andrew Westacott, who was interviewed ‘on the couch’, and gave a behind the scenes peek at how the F1 circus is marketed and delivered around the world. Questions from the floor encouraged lively conversation. More recently we enjoyed a magnificent evening with the very engaging Ross Brown from the famous Brown Brothers Wines. A full house of 170 MLC dads hung on every word and enjoyed some expansive Q & A with Ross.

The beautifully decorated room coupled with wonderful table conversation allowed women to network, learn from each other and simply enjoy each other’s company. This is just the beginning of a new tradition at MLC.

MLC dads past and present have developed a unique event that continues to entertain, engage and evolve from a proven formula. As one of the organisers and MCs for recent Beef and Burgundy dinners, I know I am simply a custodian of this highly successful, community-building fathers’ event. Long may it thrive..
