The clinic is managed by the School of Nursing’s Clinical Enterprise. March 2011 – Julie C. Novak, DNSc, RN, FAANP is the recipient of the prestigious Henry K. September 2004 – Kathleen R. Stevens, EdD, RN, FAAN, professor and director of the Academic Center for Evidence-Based Practice, receives the Texas Nurse of the Year Award from the Texas Nurses Association (TNA) March 2005 – The John A. Hartford Foundation of New York awards a $42,000 grant to support educational efforts to address the nursing shortage November 2005 – Founding Dean of the SoN, Margretta Madden Styles, EdD, RN, passes away. She served as Dean from 1969 to 1973. December 2005 – SoN appoints Kay Avant, PhD, RN as Chair of the Department of Family Nursing Care and Adrianne D. Linton, PhD, RN as Chair of the Department of Chronic Nursing Care July 2006 – Lyda Arevalo, MSN, RN is the first SoN faculty member selected as a Nurse Scholar of the Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity program (BAGNC), a program committed to improving care for the elderly August 2006 – Barbara L. Lust, PhD, RN, Associate Professor and Associate Dean for undergraduate programs passes away after a courageous battle with cancer. She was a retired colonel in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and served on the SoN faculty for 22 years. October 2006 – The Premature Infant Development (PREMIEre) program hosts a 25th reunion. Children who participated weighed less than 3 lbs., 5 ozs. at birth and received specialized care from the PREMIEre program through the age of 3. Carolyn McLerran, MSN, RN was the coordinator of the PREMIEre program and organized the reunion with support from University Health System and other community organizations. February 2007 – The Avanzar Pre-Nursing Society, a partnership between the SoN and UTSA, is established to provide counseling to students about nursing pre-requisites, the application process, and the nursing profession. May 2007 – The Nursing Advisory Council health seminar and luncheon raises more than $42,000 in sponsorship support July 2007 – Eight faculty researchers from the SoN present research at the Sigma Theta Tau 8th International Nursing Research Congress Focusing on Evidence-Based Practice in Vienna, Austria November 2007 – Young children enrolled in programs of Avance – San Antonio, are provided free health care through a new Community Outreach Clinic staffed by nurses and nursing students from the SoN December 2007 - Carol A. Reineck, PhD, RN, CNAA-BC, is named chair of the Department of Acute Nursing Care following the retirement of Dr. Nancy Girard April 2008 – Eileen T. March 2012 – Dean Breslin is voted as President-Elect of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) June 2012 – Ribbon cutting ceremony held on the $3.8 million Simulation Center & Clinical Learning Lab. The 7,281sq.ft. center is supported by a $1 million grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration; an $850,000 gift from Methodist Healthcare Ministries; $750,000 in construction support from University Health System; $500,000 in equipment support from Kinetic Concepts Inc.; $300,000 from the family of Ruthann Baldwin; a $290,000 grant from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration; $100,000 from Donna Block; and $25,000 from the School of Nursing Advisory Council. July 2012 – M. Danet Lapiz-Bluhm, PhD, RN receives Nurse Research Excellence Award by the Philippine Nurses Association of America August 2012 – Kathleen Stevens, EdD, RN, FAAN inducted into the International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame Janie Canty-Mitchell, PhD, RN is appointed Chair of the Department of Family and Community Health Systems upon the retirement of Dr. Adrianne Linton Ilene Decker, PhD, RN is appointed Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, a new position that manages all of the SoN academic programs October 2012 – The National Association of Hispanic Nurses selects Adelita Cantu, PhD, RN to be the recipient of the NAHN Nurse of the Year Award November 2012 – Over 300 practicing nurses from the military and community clinical partners came together with undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students from the SoN for a one-day Knowledge Exchange Market The SoN, along with the Texas Diversity Council, hosts the Greater San Antonio Healthcare Diversity Summit. The theme is Diversity and Cultural Competence in Healthcare and features speakers and panelists who represent diverse ethnicities, backgrounds and experiences. December 2012 – Estonian health care visitors tour the SoN Center for Simulation Innovation April 2013 – Kathleen Stevens, EdD, RN, ANEF, FAAN is appointed the Chancellor’s Health Fellow for Interprofessional Health Delivery Science by the University of Texas System Rudy Gomez, MBA, CHC, Assistant Dean for Administration, receives national award from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). He is awarded the Jerry Otzman Founders Award at the annual meeting of the Business Officers of Nursing Schools (BONUS). July 2013 – Sara Gill, PhD, RN, IBCLC receives Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award for 2013 by The University of Texas Systems Board of Regents. Awards go to faculty members who have demonstrated extraordinary classroom performance and dedication to innovation. October 2013 – M. M E SSAG E F R O M T H E D E A N Over the last ten years, our health care system has changed dramatically. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) Report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, provides a clear blueprint for how nurses will advance the nation’s health. The Carnegie Foundation Report, Educating Nurses: A call for radical transformation, calls for a more educated workforce and provided new insights regarding best practices in nursing education. Meanwhile, the Affordable Care Act is presenting unprecedented opportunities for the nursing profession. All of these have had a profound influence on schools of nursing. Our School of Nursing has responded to these reports in a variety of ways. For example, we increased enrollment, developed an Accelerated BSN track for students with a degree in a field other than nursing, implemented a Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree program, as well as additional graduate programs and majors. We revised the curriculum for undergraduate and graduate programs meeting new American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials, and developed nurse led care models and nurse managed clinics, such as the Student Health Center and the Employee Health and Wellness Clinic. As we enter into our 45th year, the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Nursing has much to celebrate. In addition to the education, research and practice milestones, we earned full re-accreditation from the AACN through 2021; built the successful Juntos Podemos student mentoring program, which now serves as a national model, to meet the needs of over 300 students; and opened a state-of-the-art Center for Simulation Innovation. Our Department of Lifelong Learning, formerly Continuing Nursing Education, continues to develop partnerships with other schools at the Health Science Center, as well as professional organizations and associations to meet the needs of adult learners in the health care industry. Our faculty continues to conduct important research related to the issues that impact our community. We operate two academic centers of excellence: the Academic Center for Evidence-Based Practice and the Center for Community-Based Health Promotion with Women and Children. We maintain an excellent faculty base, many of whom have received national awards and we currently have thirteen faculty members who are Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN). With this accomplished faculty and staff, the School of Nursing is preparing tomorrow’s nursing leaders. Our international reach extends to eight universities around the world. Through memorandum of understanding agreements, these partnerships provide experiential learning opportunities for students and faculty, as well as an exchange of knowledge and best practices. Today’s nursing students are passionate, driven and motivated to lead in much the same way that our students over the last four decades have been; however, thanks to new technologies and advances in nursing education, the way today’s students learn and are taught is drastically different from the approach used just ten years ago. For example, the simulated learning environment, interdisciplinary opportunities, learning methodologies and the clinical experience have all been enhanced. We owe much of our success to the wonderful collaborative partnerships we have formed with individual donors, corporate and foundation partners, community clinics and universities around the world. Our Nursing Advisory Council has evolved and flourished under the Council’s strong leadership. I deeply appreciate their commitment, interest and support for our nursing school. Finally, I want to express my deepest gratitude to our graduates who represent excellence in nursing care locally, nationally, and around the globe. I hope you feel inspired to re-engage in the life of your alma mater by joining the Nursing Alumni Association. M E SSAG E F R O M T H E P R E S I D E N T What began in 1969 with only four faculty members and a handful of students has grown into one of the nation’s leading schools of nursing offering the only Ph.D. in nursing program in the region, two centers of excellence, and a state-of-the-art Center for Simulation Innovation where students learn and achieve the highest standards in clinical skills. The Health Science Center’s School of Nursing is at the forefront of nursing education and leadership through its pioneering teaching, excellence in research, compassionate health care and community service. It is only fitting that as the school enters its 45th year, we celebrate with the publication of this history book commemorating the myriad accomplishments of the school and its distinguished faculty, students and alumni over the last 10 years. Today, our School of Nursing educates, at all levels, a rich and diverse student body of more than 800 who are preparing to become the next generation of compassionate, culturally proficient nursing health care professionals. More than 9,000 graduates of our school are already established in the workforce, shaping the health care practices of today and transforming the future of nursing care for tomorrow. Beginnings

1969

The need for nurses in Texas in the 1960â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s was critical yet the resources for preparing these nurses were meager. Educational programs were woefully inadequate for meeting the steadily increasing demands for larger numbers of nurses. In response to the shortage, the Texas legislature authorized the establishment of a School of Nursing in San Antonio in May of 1969. The San Antonio school along with schools in Austin, Galveston, Arlington, Houston, and El Paso comprised the University of Texas System School of Nursing under the leadership of Dr. Marilyn Willman. When the System School of Nursing was dissolved in 1976, each member school was assigned to a UT academic campus and the San Antonio school became the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Nursing (UTHSCSA SoN). Remarkably dynamic leaders deserve much credit for the continuous growth and evolution of the school. They include: Dr. Margretta Styles (1969 - 1973)

A Decade of Dynamic Growth

2004 – 2014

Evolution in Context: Social, Political, and Environmental Influences Whereas previous volumes of the School of Nursing History Book have documented activities from 1969 to 2003, this volume features highlights from 2004 through 2014. In this time period, myriad internal and external pressures have impacted health, nursing, higher education, the HSC, and the SoN. This era is best appreciated in the context of the professional, scientific, social, political, and economic climates at every level from local to global. As technology and travel have erased barriers around the globe, the impact of financial crises, natural disasters, disease, war, and terrorism is no longer confined to a geographic area.

Political and environmental issues dominated the news in 2004. George W. Bush was re-elected President of the U.S. Former president Ronald Reagan died after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. The War on Terror in Iraq continued and the first democratic elections were held in Afghanistan. Anti-American sentiment was fueled by the abuse of prisoners at Abu Ghraib by U. S. military guards. Oil prices soared. Conflict in the Sudan resulted in the deaths of thousands of civilians labeled “genocide” by Secretary of State Colin Powell. Mammoth hurricanes and deadly tsunamis devastated the Caribbean, Florida, and parts of Asia. Massachusetts was the first state to legalize same-sex marriage. A hospital in Texas had an outbreak in pertussis that was traced to a single health care worker. Texans as far south as Brownsville had snow on Christmas Eve providing their first white Christmas since 1895.

In this time period, myriad internal and external pressures have impacted health, nursing, higher education, the HSC, and the SoN.

Among the top stories in 2005 were the outbreak of the H5N1 virus (“bird flu”), decision by the U. S. Supreme Court to permit the removal of a feeding tube from Terri Schiavo, and the FDA’s addition of the ominous “black box” warning after previously approved drugs for pain and diabetes were withdrawn because of fatal adverse effects. Medicare Part D was implemented to

provide prescription drug benefits to Medicare recipients. For the first time in 13 years, the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services revised the dietary guidelines using a Food Pyramid to construct individual food plans. The pyramid emphasized healthy fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and low or fat-free dairy products. At the state level, Hurricane Katrina devastated the gulf coast and thousands of evacuees came to San Antonio and other Texas cities for temporary shelter and care. Nursing faculty and students spent countless hours at local shelters helping to care for displaced individuals and families. The San Antonio and Galveston Schools of Nursing designed an emergency plan to support Galveston nursing students if a similar disaster should damage their campus.

In 2006, the news was dominated by the U. S. elections, the Iraqi war, terrorist plots, illegal immigration, and fears about nuclear weapons in Korea and Iran. Understanding of the uses and misuses of rapidly expanding technology were emerging. These issues persisted into 2007 with new concerns evoked by rising oil prices, warnings of global warming, mass shootings at Virginia Tech, and a crisis in the mortgage industry resulting in a downturn in the housing market and a rise in foreclosures. On the health scene, the threat of MRSA became clear, the recall of unsafe toys and reported food contamination grabbed headlines, and extremely drug resistant tuberculosis emerged. The therapeutic potential for stem cell therapy and the accompanying roadblocks attracted attention in professional and lay circles. In Texas, a mandate that all young girls be vaccinated for HPV stirred controversy. 2008 was marked by a global financial crisis with bank failures, plunging world stock markets, and government bailouts of private industry. With a platform that included health care reform, Barack Obama was elected President of the United States. Salmonella outbreaks and swine flu focused attention on public health. Vitamin D was touted for its numerous therapeutic effects. Statins arrived on the market, heralded for their ability to reduce the risk of heart disease. The Texas coast was pounded by a series of hurricanes with Ike leaving profound damage on the island of Galveston where one of the other UT schools of nursing is located. Coursework was disrupted at Galveston and the San Antonio campus sought to accommodate students who wanted to relocate to San Antonio to continue their studies. In the School of Nursing, Dr. Eileen Breslin assumed leadership as Dean of the School of Nursing upon Dr. Robin Froman’s retirement. Moving into 2009, hostilities continued in the Middle East, specifically in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, and the drug war raged in Mexico. In the U.S., health care reform legislation was passed with a 10 year, $848 billion dollar budget. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force created an uproar by recommending that women eliminate self-breast exams and begin routine mammograms at age 50. The Task Force conclusion that routine prostate screening and early detection of prostate cancer did not lower death rates from prostate cancer prompted reexamination of screening recommendations. The global swine flu epidemic proved less deadly than feared, but still claimed 4,000 American lives. The Octomom focused attention on the ethics of reproductive medicine. Another mass shooting occurred, this time closer to home. At Fort Hood Texas, 13 were killed and 30 wounded. Dr. William Henrich was appointed President of the UTHSCSA when former president Dr. Francisco Cigarroa assumed the role of the Chancellor for the University of Texas System. 2010 saw continued armed conflicts around the world, multiple natural disasters, and a growing financial crisis in the European Union. Wikileaks (the release of electronic government documents) changed the way “confidential” was viewed, and the world learned the vulnerability of computerized information. In the U.S., the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was passed into law. Commonly known as “Obamacare,” this law was designed to extend health care coverage to 32 million Americans by 2019 and to rein in health care spending. The health care industry was the beneficiary of many technological and scientific developments including laboratory techniques to make stem cells, remote monitoring, and medical apps. The American Heart Association issued significant changes in CPR that were expected to improve outcomes of individuals who suffer cardiac arrest by simplifying the procedure. The recommended dietary allowance for vitamin D was increased amidst debates over the scope of benefits the vitamin provides. The highly touted bisphosphonates were being reexamined as reports of femoral fractures and osteonecrosis of the jawbone surfaced. Financial issues and political unrest around the world dominated the 2011 news. In the U.S., the debt ceiling was raised, unemployment stood at 9.0%, and another mass shooting occurred, this time in Arizona. As health care reform continued to evolve in the U. S., other health news included an outbreak of listeria related to tainted fruit, recognition of the long term delayed effects of head injuries, and concern about a possible connection between cell phones and cancer. Texas saw a sweeping budget cut of 16.6% with higher education incurring a 7.6% reduction. Higher education was challenged to demonstrate accountability by various measures such as the amount of money generated by each professor. The Texas Public Policy Foundation proposed controversial solutions for higher education. Nursing schools were pressured to increase admissions and graduation rates with fewer state resources.

Events that captured the public in 2012 included the devastation of the U. S. northeastern coast by Hurricane Sandy and mass shootings in Colorado and Connecticut. The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Health news abounded including the first revisions of the National School Lunch Program in 15 years. New York City banned sodas larger than 16 ounces, raising questions about the role of government in regulating health behaviors. Outbreaks of whooping cough, West Nile virus, salmonella, and meningitis reminded us that infectious disease continues to be a threat. The scope of bullying, especially among school children, gained attention as a result of several tragic teen suicides. In Texas, the ongoing drought posed a threat to ranchers and farmers. Devastating wildfires destroyed homes and wildlife habitats around the state. As part of an anti-abortion agenda, lawmakers sought to remove Planned Parenthood from the Texas Women’s Health Program. Public universities remained under scrutiny, and were criticized for a 4-year graduation rate of around fifty percent.

In 2013 strife continued around the world. Syria was accused of using chemical weapons against civilians. Former CIA contractor Edward Snowden exposed a massive government surveillance system called PRISM that stores information from the internet and phone and text records. The system, operated by the U.S., Great Britain, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia, reignited the debate about individual privacy versus the right of the government to monitor communication as a national security issue. Flooding was a newsmaker affecting North India, Central Europe, Australia, and regions of the U.S. Colorado and Washington legalized marijuana. In Texas, Governor Rick Perry voiced opposition to Obamacare and indicated that Texas would not set up a state health insurance exchange.

Evolution in Context: Professional Influences Against the backdrop of the events already cited, a series of publications by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) that began in 2000 continues to have a significant influence on the health care professions and education. To Err is Human: Building a Safer Health System (2000) revealed that as many as 98,000 people in the U. S. die each year from preventable medical errors. The IOM recommended identifying and correcting the problems in systems, processes, and conditions that lead to medication and other errors. In 2006, the IOM issued additional recommendations aimed specifically at preventing medication errors. The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) proposed a national health infrastructure including an electronic health record that would facilitate safer drug therapy. Crossing the Quality Chasm, published by the IOM in 2001, focused on a broad view of health care. The authors declared that the aims of health care in the twenty-first century should be safe, effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient, and equitable. The third IOM publication in this series was Health Professions Education: A Bridge to Quality (2003) and it had profound implications for health care education. The IOM stated that health professionals need to be competent in five areas: delivering patient-centered care, working as interdisciplinary teams, practicing evidence-based medicine, focusing on quality improvement, and using information technology. To achieve these competencies in nursing education, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funded a project named Quality and Safety Education for Nursing (QSEN) to identify the knowledge, skill, and attitudes to be developed in nursing education. AACN embarked on a journey to revise the essential curriculum content and graduate competencies for nursing education. The Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice was published in 2008, and The Essentials of Master’s Education in Nursing in 2011. The BSN Essentials is a transformative plan that defines the curricular elements and framework required for building the baccalaureate nursing curriculum for the 21st century (AACN, 2008). The Essentials mirror the IOM recommendations by emphasizing patient-centered care, interprofessional teams, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, patient safety, informatics, clinical reasoning/critical thinking, genetics and genomics, cultural sensitivity, professionalism, and practice across the lifespan in a complex, everchanging healthcare environment. Master’s education builds upon baccalaureate preparation. The MSN Essentials stress leadership to improve quality outcomes, lifelong learning, interprofessional collaboration, integration of healthcare services, innovative nursing practice, and the translation of evidence into practice.

In 2006, the AACN also delineated essentials of doctoral education for advanced practice. It differentiated the doctoral research degree (PhD) from the practice focused doctorate (DNP). The DNP programs prepare experts in specialized advanced nursing practice with a focus on innovative, evidence-based practice. The DNP programs are individualized for specific roles including organizational leadership, policy, and advance practice. A new role, the Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) was developed and described by AACN in a 2007 white paper. The CNL is described as a leader in healthcare delivery across all settings. Functioning as part of an interprofessional team, the CNL communicates, plans, and implements evidence-based care for a distinct group of patients. The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health published by the National Academy of Sciences sought to define the place of nursing in health care reform. Recommendations included the removal of scope-of-practice barriers, the expansion of opportunities for nurses to lead and diffuse collaborative improvement efforts, the implementation of nurse residency programs, measures to increase the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree to 80% by 2020 and to ensure that nurses engage in lifelong learning, preparation of nurses to lead change to advance health, and the creation of an infrastructure for the collection and analysis of interprofessional health care workforce data. (2010) This era has been marked by increasing concern about the existing and predicted worsening shortage of nurses. Factors related to this shortage include insufficient nursing school enrollments partly attributed to a shortage of nursing school faculty, the aging of the registered nurse population, increased demand for care by aging baby boomers, and nurse burnout and high turnover rates.

Evolution in Context: The School of Nursing Responds The impact of the IOM, NAS, QSEN reports, and AACN Essentials documents on nursing education has been immense. The UTHSCSA School of Nursing has responded by completely revising the undergraduate and graduate curricula to address the needs of professional nursing now and in the future, using the AACN essentials as guides. The SoN submitted a self-study report to the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education in 2011. Following a comprehensive assessment, the School was granted continued full accreditation for a 10-year period. The DNP degree was accredited by CCNE in 2013. To address the nursing shortage, undergraduate enrollments were increased 20% to maximum capacity and an Accelerated BSN Track was implemented. The Accelerated Track permits individuals who already have a bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree or higher to complete the BSN in 15 Months. To facilitate clinical learning experiences, the SoN partnered with the Methodist Healthcare System and the South Texas Veterans Health Care System to create dedicated education units and clinical immersion experiences for graduating seniors. These efforts are detailed Section II of this publication which describes how the mission of the university and the school is being met in education, scholarship, and practice/service. Just as every living organism must adapt to survive, the School of Nursing has evolved and will continue to evolve, not just in response to current events, but in anticipation of future events. The curriculum evolves in response to the needs of human beings in whatever environment they exist and to the continuing explosion of knowledge and technology. It must be flexible so it can be reshaped quickly as the world changes. Nursing scholarship, inclusive of research, recognizes new challenges and questions and seeks to find solutions and answers. Service uses the knowledge and skills of faculty, staff, and students to enhance the well-being of our citizens and our professional community. As the next decade brings ongoing and new challenges, the School of Nursing remains committed to preparing leaders to meet the challenges of the healthcare delivery system.

A Mission Fulfilled: A Unified Model

Academic Programs The mission of a university is to learn, to educate, and to serve. The School of Nursing at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio embraces each of these components. The educational mission was the first directive when the legislature created the School in 1969. In 1970, 4 students began their BSN studies with 4 faculty members and a Dean, Dr. Margretta Styles. The faculty was composed of Debra Hymovich, Nancy Maebius, Suellen Reed, and Ruth Stewart. The first graduate program, which was launched in 1972, attracted 28 students. Fast forward forty-five years! Programs have evolved to meet the needs of individuals, families, and communities in an increasingly complex health care environment. Through the changes, the SoN has maintained its commitment “to educate the next generation of compassionate, culturally-proficient nursing healthcare professionals at all levels of nursing education”. With baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral programs, the SoN addresses the need for direct care providers, clinical leaders, nurse practitioners, and nurse scientists. These tiers of education provide a ladder for advancement of nurses in our service area.

Baccalaureate

The upper-division BSN program comprises two tracks: the Traditional Track and the Accelerated Track. The Traditional Track is designed for students earning their first baccalaureate degree, and can be completed in 4 semesters of full-time study. The Accelerated Track is an intense 15-month program designed for students who already have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a field other than nursing. Part-time study is an option only in the Traditional Track. Cohorts of 130-140 are admitted to the Traditional Track in January and September. One cohort of 80 students is admitted to the Accelerated Track each May. 14

Masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

Students enrolled in the Master of Science in Nursing program are admitted to one of 6 majors: Administrative Management, Clinical Nurse Leader, Family Nurse Practitioner, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Primary Care, or Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. A nurse who has previously earned an MSN can obtain a Post-MSN Certificate as a nurse practitioner. Registered nurses from Associate Degree or Diploma Programs are eligible to apply for the Alternate Entry Masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Degree. This option enables the RN to earn both a BSN and a MSN in an efficient manner.

Doctoral

Options for doctoral study include the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing. The DNP prepares advanced practice nurses in leadership, policy, economics, quality and safety issues, and translational research to enable them to lead multidisciplinary practice initiatives. Within the DNP are three leadership tracks: Nurse Practitioner Leadership, Executive Administrative Management, and Public Health Nurse Leader. The PhD program, which falls under the Health Science Center Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, prepares clinical nurse scientists to pursue research or faculty positions.

Leadership

Staying on the cutting edge in academia requires the vision, knowledge, and hard work of administration and faculty through the Committee on Undergraduate Studies and the Council on Graduate Studies. During the last decade, the school has had two Associate Deans, one for the Undergraduate Program and another for the Graduate Program. Dr. Beverly Robinson was at the helm of the Graduate Program until her retirement in 2010. Dr. Brenda Jackson served as Associate Dean for the Undergraduate Program from 2001 to 2007. Dr. Suzanne Yarbrough steered the undergraduate program through major revisions and new program development from 2007 until her retirement in 2012. Then a single Associate Dean fror Academic Affairs position was created and filled by Dr. Ilene Decker who brought extensive experience in both undergraduate and graduate education from an international perspective.

Center for Simulation Innovation The impact of technology on education in recent years has been phenomenal. If you have been out of the school environment more than 10 years, you might be astonished at the learning resources available for learning new material and acquiring technical skills. One of the largest evolutions in nursing education has been in the traditional skills laboratory. In the past, teaching assistants guided small groups of students through the steps of skills using manikins. Students repeated the skill until their performance was acceptable. This was a time-honored strategy that was the best we had for decades. The Learning Lab of yore has been transformed into a 7,281sq. ft. state of the art Center for Simulation Innovation (CSI) that integrates high-tech manikins into high-fidelity environments. Manikins can be programmed to replicate various clinical situations, and to respond to the students interventions. The obstetric model, Noelle, actually delivers an infant manikin. Not only the manikins are realistic, the setting is very much like the health care settings where students will eventually be providing care. The School of Nursing has a “virtual hospital” with an ambulatory care suite, a medical-surgical unit, intensive care unit, trauma center, maternal/ child center, and pediatric care suite. Sophisticated scenarios can be programmed to provide student practice in assessment and decision making as well as technical skills. Instructors can unobtrusively observe and videotape students’ actions as a teaching tool. Students are able to see themselves in action and make corrections as needed. The advantages of this new learning environment for the student include the opportunity to practice with no risk to live patients, the ability to perform in a realistic physical setting, and the ability to see the outcomes of their interventions. Advantages for faculty include the opportunity to assess students’ strengths and weaknesses before entering the clinical setting, the ability to manipulate the scenarios in countless ways so that students can be confronted with multiple challenges. Research has shown that simulation is superior to traditional skills laboratories in student satisfaction, student-teacher interaction, and student engagement. The Director of the CSI is Teri Boese, MSN, RN. Ms. Boese is co-founding president of the International Nursing Association for Clinical Nursing Simulation and Learning. She is a pioneer in the field having developed many of the international standards for simulated education. This exceptionally well designed and equipped simulation center occured because of the exceptional community partners. The center’s partners were the University Health System, a major contributor and uses the CSI to orient new nursing staff, the U.S. / Economic Development Administration, Methodist Healthcare Ministries, Kinetic Concepts Inc., the family of Ruth Ann Baldwin, HRSA, Donna Block, and the School of Nursing Advisory Council. Without the community partners vision and the vision of the faculty, this project would not have come to fruition.

A Diverse Workforce for A Diverse Population When San Antonians meet people from within and outside the U. S., they get used to hearing: “I LOVE San Antonio!” It is not only a popular tourist destination, but also a popular place to live. San Antonio is now the seventh largest city (by population) in the U.S., and the second largest city in Texas. Of the 10 largest cities in the U.S., San Antonio had the greatest percentage increase in population (4.2%) from 2010 to 2012. The multicultural populace is part of the charm of this city. Sixty-three percent of the population is Hispanic or Latino, 27% White, 7% Black or African American, 2.4% Asian, and 0.9% Native Americans. 3.4% identify themselves as biracial or multiracial. In addition, we have welcomed refugees from around the world. As health care providers, this is the population we care for. In recent years, the SoN renewed its commitment to prepare graduates to deliver sensitive, compassionate care to all individuals, embracing differences in race, ethnicity, language, gender, sexual orientation, physical and mental ability. This commitment initiated a process that began with examination of our core values and cultural expectations. The process was facilitated by Organization Development Consultant Dr. Kikanza Nuri-Robins. Dr. Nuri-Robins conducted a series of workshops for faculty and staff aimed at building cultural proficiency. Cultural proficiency is evident in the fabric of the SoN from the recently revised curriculum to the scholarly work of faculty. Dr. Peter Guarnero is studying health promotion behaviors among young men of color. Dr. Socorro Escandon and Virginia Ramirez have founded Dos Generaciones, Un Camino (Two Generations, One Road), an organization that empowers members to advocate for community change. Dr. Karine Crow continues her work with the Native American community. Dr. Adelita Cantu has conducted a study to determine why older Mexican-Americans do not eat as healthily as they should. Dr. Jill Hayes took a group of undergraduate students to a Navajo reservation in Arizona for an immersion experience. Dr. Norma Martinez-Rogers’ programs to increase the recruitment and retention of minorities in nursing serve as a national model. Young teen girls from South and East San Antonio have attended Dr. Martinez-Rogers’s Health Camp to learn about health professions and the opportunities that are available to them. Dr. Linda Porter-Wenzlaff launched an effort to infuse cultural proficiency throughout the HSC. She succeeded in having the Multicultural Calendar added as an ongoing feature to the HSC webpage. The calendar is an educational tool that incorporates holidays, celebrations, and key historical events in countries around the world. Among the many partners of the Center for Community-Based Health Promotion in Women and Children are the Familias en Accion Community Collaborative Council, American Indians in Texas at the Spanish Colonial Missions, Por Vida Academy, and Las Mujeres Nobles de Harlandale. International activities foster cultural proficiency beyond the familiar boundaries and people of South Texas. In 2011, SoN faculty were invited to present a panel discussion on “Transforming the Culture of a School of Nursing” at the Fifth Annual Cultural Proficiency Institute in Huntington Beach, CA. In June 2014, Dr. Norma Martinez Rogers will be holding the inaugural Cultural Inclusion Institute: Promoting a Culture of Inclusion in Healthcare to develop strategies for integrating cultural inclusion into healthcare professional practice.

Juntos Podemos As a nursing faculty member, Dr. Norma Martinez-Rogers observed that program completion rates for Hispanic nursing students fell below the rates of their peers. To address this problem, she designed Juntos Podemos (“Together We Can”), a mentoring program designed to assist students by reducing the negative effects of educational and social disparities that some experience in nursing school. In 1999 with $5000 in initial funding, the program was launched. Subsequent funding by the Health Resources Service Administration (HRSA) has allowed the program to flourish and grow. Juntos Podemos is voluntary and open to all students. Students who have successfully completed their first semester in the nursing program and meet specific requirements can apply to become mentors. Each mentor is trained to work with a protégé, and in turn, is mentored by an upper level student throughout their program of study. Mentors and protégés are paired on the basis of some common personal or background characteristics. Mentors not only provide tutoring, support, and encouragement, but also counsel protégés in skills to enhance their success. They advise protégés to use the many other resources available to them. Mentors receive a small stipend to help with their educational expenses. Whereas academic success is an important outcome, participants also develop leadership skills and greater cultural proficiency. The program has grown from 20 Hispanic students to embrace hundreds of students from many cultures as both mentors and protégés. A remarkable 98% of the students who participate in Juntos Podemos are academically successful. Because of the success of this program, it is being used as a national model to improve outcomes for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

International Connections Nurses around the world share a bond of caring and concern for the well-being of humans everywhere. A focus on international connections has flourished in this decade under the guidance of Dr. Kay Avant. Agreements have been formalized with Schools of Nursing in: • Thailand • Mexico: Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon • Mahidol University • Australia: Deakin University • Thammasat University • Turkey: Yildirim Beyazit University • Chiang Mai University • Finland: University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio • Saudi Arabia: King Saud Bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences The rigorous program of study makes it difficult for nursing students to engage in international experiences during the academic sessions. Therefore the School of Nursing has offered these opportunities primarily through service learning projects that earned course credit in the summer or between sessions. Selected groups of undergraduate students have had immersion experiences in Guatemala where they developed language skills, participated in health care services, and gained an appreciation of life in another country. A select group of accelerated track students was able to complete their required clinical immersion hours in Guatemala. This unique experience was possible because of a partnership with a service organization. The students worked with an interprofessional team of volunteers, preceptors, and local health care providers to deliver supervised community and primary health care to the indigenous Mayan Indian populace. This educational experience has a profound effect on students, inspiring them to embrace cultural sensitivity in providing safe care, building their understanding of the unique health care needs of a vulnerable population, and demonstrating on a small scale the globalization of health care. Health Science Centers are centers of knowledge development and faculty not only discover new knowledge, but they also must disseminate what has been learned. International conferences provide a venue for nurse scientists around the world to share advances and to network with colleagues. The School of Nursing is supportive on faculty attendance at international conferences, and seeks funding through various mechanisms to support this activity. Meetings attended by faculty in recent years include: • Sigma Theta Tau International, Australia where 3 faculty presented papers • Global Health Conference in Chiang Mai, Thailand where 6 faculty presented papers or posters. • Nursing Informatics 2012 conference in Montreal, Canada attended by one faculty and one student. Undergraduate student Jennifer Browne was recognized for Best Student Paper. • International Association of Human Caring attended by 3 faculty and one DNP student. Dr. Gail Williams is Immediate Past President of the organization. • Thailand International Research Conference attended by 2 faculty who presented papers The HSC and the School of Nursing attract numerous international visitors each year. These visits build collegial relationships that bridge cultural and political barriers. International visitors hosted by the School of Nursing in recent years included the Deans and International Directors of UANL and Chiang Mai, Postdoctoral faculty from Deakin University—Brisbane, and the Dean of the School of Nursing at King Saud Bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences in Saudi Arabia. International connections allow for collaboration and sharing of resources for teaching, service, and scholarship. They enrich and broaden our perspective while breaking down stereotypes and barriers. 22

Department of Lifelong Learning In 2012, the former Continuing Education Department at the School of Nursing was renamed the Department of Lifelong Learning (DLL) to reflect the philosophy that “learning is a lifelong, self-directed process encompassing the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains.” The DLL has continued to flourish by offering a variety of exciting, accessible, professional, state of the art, quality programs to meet the needs of the nursing community throughout the nation and is developing online continuing education programming for the future. In collaboration with various professional organizations, the DLL has hosted regional, national, and international nursing conferences. Because of the comprehensive services offered by the DLL, organizations are confident that their programs will be first class. The Annual Meeting of the International Association of Clinical Stimulation and Learning grew from 250 to over 1,000 attendees when the organization partnered with the DLL for the meeting. The RN Refresher Course is the only university-based course in Texas. An expert in online learning was utilized to assure that best practices were applied. The course is available to local nurses as well as those from the Dallas/Ft Worth area who complete the content review online and the clinical components at USMD Hospital at Arlington. The DLL is seeking to partner with a healthcare facility in the Houston area to support nurses in that area. Between 2010 and 2013, 47 students completed the program. An article regarding student demographics and the community outreach has been submitted to the Journal of Continuing Education in Nursing and is in 2nd review. The DLL has a legacy of dynamic leaders and superb staff who have built and maintained it as a self-sustaining entity. From 2001 to 2012, Rose Tierney-Gumaer served as Director. Under her leadership, the department grew from one part-time Nurse Planner to 3 full time staff (Director, CE Coordinator, Administrative Assistant) and a part-time planner. The income generated by DLL programs have been used for faculty development. Upon the retirement of Ms. Gumaer, Laura Alvarado, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, stepped into the Director position. Ms. Alvarado retired from the U.S. Air Force where she had served as Vice Commander and Chief Nursing Officer at Wilford Hall Medical Center and as Dean and Commander of the U. S. School of Aerospace Medicine. She brings 34 years of experience in clinical, executive, and consultative roles to the DLL.

The DLL has continued to flourish by offering a variety of exciting, accessible, professional, state of the art, quality programs to meet the needs of the nursing community throughout the nation and is developing online continuing education programming for the future. 24

Office of Nursing Research and Scholarship The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (1999, p. 3) defines scholarship in nursing as “those activities that systematically advance the teaching, research, and practice of nursing through rigorous inquiry that : 1) is significant to the profession; 2) is creative; 3) can be documented ; 4) can be replicated or elaborated; and 5) can be peer reviewed through various methods”. Using Boyer’s model, the School of Nursing supports the scholarship of teaching, discovery, and practice/engagement. Even though we address scholarship as one of three missions, the vision of Dr. Carrie Braden, Director of the Office of Nursing Research and Scholarship, is that the three missions are best advanced by faculty who combine their practice, teaching, and scholarship to develop their “area of wonderment”. Colleagues and students of Dr. Braden know this phrase well. When seeking guidance from Dr. Braden, she begins by asking what they wonder about and helps the individual frame that “wonderment” as a researchable question. The Wall of Knowledge, located in the hallway adjacent to the ONRS, provides a framework to classify and display faculty scholarly foci. The School of Nursing is an integral part of an internationally recognized academic health center (AHC) that is a site for a funded Clinical Translational Science Award (CTSA), Institute for Integration of Medicine and Health (IIMS). Interprofessional research collaborations are strongly supported by the IIMS. The ONRS occupies a large suite on the second floor of the SoN. The staff provides support to faculty and students at every stage of the research process. They also assist with manuscript and poster preparation to ensure dissemination of important findings. Between 2007 and 2010, the office supported the submission of 61 proposals by 22 different faculty with a 54% success rate yielding over six million dollars in awards. Dr. Braden works with the Committee on Faculty Scholarship to select recipients of the Dean’s Award for Scholarly Pilot Projects. Beginning in 2013, faculty had the opportunity to apply for a Catalyst Award which will support pilot work to propel the recipient to an NIH grant proposal. The Scholars Program provides a mentored research experience in which undergraduate and graduate students participate in faculty research. Scholars attend programs open to all faculty and students at noon on Fridays. Participants have the opportunity to share their work, seek input on ideas, and learn new skills for research. Students may also earn elective course credit for their work. The Knowledge Exchange Market was a novel continuing education program offered in 2012. Dr. Paul Cook, Director of the Center for Nursing Research at the University of Colorado Denver was the keynote speaker. Participants then toured a “marketplace” featuring proof of concept/best practice abstracts and presentations including posters, videos, and narratives.

Center for Community-Based Health Promotion in Women and Children The Center for Community-Based Health Promotion in Women and Children employs an innovative model of Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR). CBPR unites community partners and academic researchers to address needs identified by the community. The process involves sharing power, establishing trust, fostering co-learning, and enhancing strengths to ultimately build community capacity. The center mentors community members, faculty and students in research and funds pilot studies for CBPR. Dos Generaciones/Un Camino strives to prepare young girls to seek and succeed in higher education. Understanding Health Promotion Behaviors Among Young Men of Color is led by SON faculty Dr. Peter Guarnero and Daniel Pineda, Center Staff, and the American Indians in Texas at the Spanish Colonial Mission. This study engages young Latino/Hispanic/Native American men to identify critical information needed to create a culturally and contextually relevant sexual and reproductive health promotion program. Recovery: Initial Phase of a Community Based Participatory Action Project Partnering with Women Living in Homelessness is led by SON faculty Dr. Rebecca Bonugli and Haven for Hope, a transitional homeless shelter in San Antonio. The study is exploring the personal experience of recovery as perceived by women who have experienced it with the goal of developing a recovery intervention specific to homeless women. Dr. Janna Lesser is the director of the Center. Under Dr. Lesser’s leadership, numerous successful projects have been implemented. Her work has been published in numerous data-based articles. Dr. Lesser has received federal and state funding to support her work. Her enthusiasm and tireless dedication to engaging marginalized and disenfranchised groups is inspirational. 28

Academic Center for Evidence-Based Practice

The Academic Center for Evidence-Based Practice (ACE; www.ACESTAR.uthscsa.edu) was established as a Center of Excellence for the School of Nursing in 2000 with initial funding from the Department of Family Nursing, the University Hospital System, and the VA VERDICT program. The purpose of ACE is to advance cutting-edge, state of the art, evidence-based practice (EBP), research, and education within an interprofessional context. By turning research into action, the ACE strives to improve health care, patient outcomes, and patient safety. The specific objectives of the center are to: • Advance evidence synthesis, translation, integration, and improvement science • Furnish a venue for interprofessional evidence-based methods and practice • Facilitate transfer of health care knowledge to nursing and other health care practices • Encourage, facilitate, coordinate, and conduct research and interprofessional team investigation in the field of evidence-based practice and quality improvement • Provide education in evidence-based practice through undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral, and continuing education programs The work of the ACE is accomplished through collaboration with the Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) Institute for Integration of Medicine and Science (IIMS) and its partners, the South Texas Veterans’ Health Care System in San Antonio Center of Excellence (VERDICT). The ACE team collaborates on numerous grants and projects with the National Institutes of Health, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), Academy Health, and Institute of Medicine (IOM). ACE has garnered over $10 million to conduct research and projects for quality and safety. Projects focus on EBP uptake in tobacco cessation, childhood obesity, the science of team science, and systems performance improvement. Twelve years of professional development programming has touched an estimated 10 million patients through attendees from across the globe. The ACE Star Model is adopted by scores of healthcare agencies and structures the national consensus on EBP competencies in nursing. ACE is the home of the Improvement Science Research Network (ISRN; www.ISRN.net), a national research infrastructure that supports interprofessional studies in improvement and safety. ISRN developed the first stakeholder research priorities in improvement science in the world. ISRN is recognized by AHRQ as a Practice-Based Research Network and part of the IIMS. Members of ACE have been appointed to the international hall of fame in nursing research and serve as the UT System Chancellor’s Health Fellow in Healthcare Delivery Science. 30

Faculty Scholarship A measure of faculty productivity in the university is the extent to which knowledge is disseminated through myriad professional channels. During the current decade, the SoN has been extremely well represented in refereed journals, abstracts and presentations at professional meetings, books and book chapters, and numerous other venues. A listing of all these products would exceed the limits of this booklet. However, a review of faculty vitae between 2004 and 2014 provides a snapshot of scholarly productivity. Highlights are: 589 articles were published in professional journals. These journals spanned an array of specialties. These opportunities are important because they deliver current knowledge from academia to direct care providers, patients, families, and lay caregivers. The dissemination of knowledge for application to practice is being vastly changed by the use of electronic resources. The lengthy process of manuscript submission, review, and publication has been shorted considerably. The availability of online journals means that the bedside nurse, the student, and the educator have access to professional literature at their fingertips. The SoN faculty has made and will continue to make important contributions to the scholarship of nursing with the goal of providing the best care possible.

UT Nursing Clinical Enterprise In September 2009, the UT Health Science Center’s School of Nursing created the Office of Practice and Engagement (OPE) and recruited Julie Cowan Novak, DNSc, RN, CPNP, FAANP, FAAN, as Vice Dean for Practice and Engagement. The OPE’s mission is to integrate discovery, diversity and delivery in a research and learning laboratory where evidence-based practice and education occur. Under Dr. Novak’s leadership, the OPE has fostered the growth of clinical science and the UT Nursing Clinical Enterprise (UTNCE), which operates on-campus facilities for students and employees as well as community-based clinics. “The UTNCE is committed to providing an accessible, high-quality and effective system for individuals, families and communities,” said Dr. Novak, who also serves as executive director of the UTNCE. At the Student Health Center, UTNCE provides a range of health services to more than 3,100 students. Through online student surveys and regular meetings with student organizations, Dr. Novak and her team are able to continuously improve the service and care they deliver. Recent enhancements have included renovations to the waiting room and extended hours each day; an evening pediatric clinic for students’ children is currently under development. In November 2010, Dr. Novak and her team created the Employee Health and Wellness Clinic. In addition to providing employees with comprehensive health and wellness services, the clinic offers monthly health promotion and disease prevention initiatives on topics such as heart health, smoking cessation, weight and stress management, and healthy eating and activity together (HEAT). The UTNCE also provides health care and child health services at two community-based clinics: AVANCE Head Start and Healy-Murphy Alternative High School and Daycare. In response to the success of these programs, AVANCE partners have asked Dr. Novak and her team to expand their services to other San Antonio and rural Head Start sites. Across its four clinics, the UTNCE provides care to more than 10,000 individuals. Three of the four clinics are designated for Medically Underserved Populations. “In addition to delivering high-quality, compassionate care to our patients, the UTNCE clinics enable students from the schools of nursing, medicine, dentistry and health professions to perform clinical rotations while enjoying diverse community service learning experiences,” Dr. Novak said. “These settings serve as rich learning laboratories where interprofessional collaboration, outstanding clinical care and sustainability of the health home model are emphasized.” Not satisfied with resting on their laurels, Dr. Novak and her team have several projects in the works designed to increase the services they deliver as well as the number of patients they serve. They are currently developing a proposal to partner with Head Start to establish additional Health Homes, and after an intense three-year pilot they recently received UT System approval for the Nursing Faculty Practice Plan. Meanwhile, Dr. Novak regularly applies for grant funding that would allow UTNCE’s clinics to expand their patient base at each clinic and provide additional nurse practitioners to integrate behavioral/mental health into primary care.

Dr. Novak and her team have been awarded over $6 million in grants and contracts to link the four clinics through electronic health records and to expand each of the clinics through the care of the children of Health Science Center students, the care of retirees, the growing refugee population, and the parents and grandparents of AVANCE Head Start enrollees. Services at AVANCE and Healy-Murphy will expand from two days per week in 2013, to four days per week in 2014 to five days per week in 2015. The Clinical Enterprise team provides care for 3,100 students, 6,000 employees, and over 1,000 children and their families. Over 15,000 clinic visits were recorded in 2012. This sustainability model of nurse-managed clinics can be provided at one-third the cost of traditional models. The contribution from the UTNCE to the overall School of Nursing budget has grown to 15% over the past four years. As she looks to the future of the school’s clinical enterprise, Dr. Novak is excited about the prospects. “Nurse practitioners have the authority to write prescriptions, are nationally certified in their specialties and are licensed by the Texas Board of Nursing,” she said. “We are confident that through our nurse-led, nurse-managed clinic networks, we have a systematic process for delivering accessible, high-quality and cost-effective health care while achieving continuous quality improvement.” Dr. Novak holds the Thelma and Joseph Crow Endowed Professorship at the UT Health Science Center’s School of Nursing. She has authored numerous grant proposals and has secured more than $25 million in grants to support her research, nursing education, clinical projects and global health care initiatives.

Community Service Learning The Community Service Learning (CSL) model integrates community service with instruction, employs reflection to enrich the studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; learning experience, and teaches social justice. The HSC Center for Medical Humanities and Ethics often provides some funding for faculty and student projects. Among the CSL projects in the SoN are Muevete USA, Healthy Choices for Kids, and the Refugee Clinic.

Muevete USA.

Dr. Norma Martinez-Rogers and Dr. Adelita Cantu developed Muevete USA which was funded by the National Association of Hispanic Nurses and the Coca-Cola Foundation. The project goal is to teach and work at the community, grassroots level with Hispanic youth and their families to develop skills and enhance their ability to make healthy choices that contribute to a reduction in child and adolescent obesity.

Healthy Choices for Kids

Healthy Choices for Kids was developed by Dr. Ruth Berggren, Director of the Center for Medical Humanities and Ethics, and nursing faculty Dr. Adelita Cantu. The program uses a variety of interactive strategies to help children learn to make healthy food choices.

Refugee Clinic

Since 1995, more than 5,000 individuals from Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Israel, Jordon, Bhutan, Burma, Somalia, Sudan, Thailand, the Congo, and Cuba, have been resettled in San Antonio by the Archdiocese of San Antonio Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Program. Many of these resettled refugees reside at apartment complexes near the South Texas Medical Center. Recognizing the need of this population for accessible health care services, Community Health Nursing faculty member Roseann Vivanco saw an opportunity to serve the community while providing a unique community health clinical experience. Working with community and partners and other health professionals, she established a Population Health Nursing clinic at Wurzbach Manor in 2009. Ms. Vivanco submitted a grant proposal to the SoN Nursing Advisory Council (NAC) to provide some support for the clinic. The proposal was approved and funded which supported the purchase of health screening equipment and supplies. Initially nursing students conducted weight, BMI, blood pressure, blood glucose, and cholesterol screenings. They took health histories, administered a depression inventory, and assessed nutritional status. The screenings provided baseline data about the health status of the individuals and the population as a whole. The data also served as a basis for planning future interventions and raised researchable questions. Numerous health needs were noted. Medical problems included hypertension, diabetes, asthma, skin conditions, and depression. Other health issues were dental problems and nutritional needs. Some participants were found to have prescriptions that had never been filled. Some homes were infested with bedbugs, lice, and fleas.

Faculty and students realized that the refugees continued to experience health disparities related to: • Language • Cultural differences. • Lack of income from inability to obtain a job • Lack of continued health benefits. • Knowledge deficits regarding use of local health systems and local transportation systems • Numerous barriers to receiving care were identified: • Cultural differences in healthcare beliefs • Language • Folk remedy use • Religious differences (Many of the refugees are Muslim) • Differences in hygiene standards and customs • Nutritional deficits due to lack of money to buy adequate food • Trust issues

The need for additional clinic services and resources soon became obvious. St Francis Episcopal Church offered a larger space that could be used as a clinic, at no charge. Furthermore, they provided the services of a Parish Nurse, Lylith Schneider , RN, PhD. Neighbors Helping Neighbors provided hospitality services such as food, clothing, school supplies, and household goods. A group of churches helped create a community garden for the refugees. Students from the School of Medicine and Physician’s Assistant programs joined, providing medical care with the support of attending physicians 2 afternoons each month. A group of PA students created an educational website for refugees. In April of 2011 the clinic officially came under the umbrella of UTHSCSA’s student run free clinics. This status provided access to renewable supplies and resources. Dental students began dental education and oral cancer screenings. They provided oral care products (tooth brushes, floss), and made referrals to clinics where they practice. Community workers provided translation services. In 2012, Dr. Richard Usatine, Medical School Professor, negotiated with UHS and Methodist Ministries to move the clinic to the Northwest Family Health Clinic at 7726 Louis Pasteur. In 2014, the clinic returned to St. Francis Episcopal Church where it continues to grow and flourish as an excellent example of Community Service Learning. It also serves to remind us of the difference one caring person can make in the lives of others. Ms. Vivanco embodies the HSC commitment to making lives better. May 2011: Dr. Linda Porter-Wenzlaff received the PRISM Award for her work in promoting diversity within the nursing workforce from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

The International Nursing Students Association with faculty advisor Dr. M. Danet Lapiz-Bluhm, was selected to receive the Student Government Association’s Community Service Award. The students conducted health screenings for 1,500 underinsured South Texans.

March 2011: Dr. Julie Novak was the recipient of the prestigious Henry K. Silver Memorial Award from the National

Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners. The award honors an individual who has contributed to the expansion or improvement of pediatric health care and the advancement of the profession of pediatric nurse practitioners at the national and/or international level.

March 2012: Dean Eileen Breslin was elected President-Elect of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing

(AACN). She will serve as president from 2014 to 2016. The association is the national voice for university and four-year college education programs in nursing, representing more than 690 member nursing schools at public and private institutions.

Community Connections

Development and Alumni Relations The Development and Alumni Relations team focuses externally to promote and support the priorities of the School of Nursing. The team is committed to facilitating philanthropic support from community members, alumni, corporations and foundations to benefit the mission of the School of Nursing. Throughout each academic year, this team engages supporters through initiatives such as the annual scholarship luncheon to celebrate the connection between scholarship recipients and their benefactors; annual giving appeals to generate sustaining funding for the Dean’s priorities; and the student thank-a-thon to allow students the opportunity to learn about philanthropy through the rewarding process of thanking donors by phone for their support. The team also assists the Nursing Advisory Council in their efforts to connect with the community through events such as the annual Spring Luncheon and Fall Social. In addition to conducting tours and site visits to educate new friends and supporters about the exciting developments within the School of Nursing, the Development team enjoys meeting with alumni and friends to identify their philanthropic goals and assist with their charitable giving plans in support of the School of Nursing. As members of the university’s comprehensive Institutional Advancement team, the SON’s development and alumni relations staff work closely with the Gift Administration and Endowment Compliance teams to ensure that all gifts to the SON are properly stewarded and designated for use based on each donor’s intent. In concert with the Alumni Association Board, Alumni Relations promotes opportunities for alumni to reconnect with their alma mater and fellow alumni. They deliver a range of benefits designed to help alumni stay informed, get involved and become invested in the School of Nursing. E-newletters, the annual Tribute magazine and the alumni webpage keep our graduates up to date on information, activities and events ensuing at the school. HSConnect is an online tool that allows our graduates access to an alumni directory as well as the ability to post class notes so graduates can celebrate each other’s accomplishments. 40

Nursing Advisory Council Since 1983, the Nursing Advisory Council (NAC) has served as a bridge to the community to generate financial resources, influence awareness and develop partnerships that enhance and support the UTHSCSA School of Nursing. The NAC’s vision is to promote excellence in nursing care by supporting baccalaureate and graduate degree programs by increasing community visibility and financial support for the School of Nursing. In the last ten years, the NAC has generated over half a million dollars to support faculty research and student scholarships. The NAC meets three times per year, and hosts a Fall Social and a Spring Luncheon. Strategic planning sessions are conducted every other year so the group has clear goals and a plan on how to accomplish these goals. NAC Goals • Gain financial support for the SON • Create opportunities to improve public awareness of the importance of nursing, nursing education and the school of nursing • Serve as informed advocates in appropriate public and private forums • Support school events and activities • Build relationships to attract, support and retain outstanding students, faculty, staff and administrators Today, the NAC has six standing committees which all assist in reaching the goals. A Salute to Our Military

Since its inception nearly 50 years ago, the UTHSCSA School of Nursing has enjoyed a long-standing, close partnership with the U. S. Armed Forces. Located in Military City USA, the SoN educated scores of military enlisted and officer personnel who have graduated from the BSN, MSN, and PhD programs over the years. Many of these graduates were fully or partially funded by the military departments in which they served. The SoN relies on preceptors in military, veterans affairs, and civilian facilities to make it possible for students to achieve clinical and practicum objectives. With a strong focus on acute, emergency, mental health, perioperative, and critical care, which are prominent focus areas in the military, the SoN provided Mastersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; level education for leaders in these fields. Many former students have become outstanding faculty in the SoN. They are proud of the educational opportunities they were afforded, and reflect that they were motivated by role models in the SoN who engendered their desire and ability to teach. Alumni became General Officers, Chief Nurse Executives, Commanders of military medical units, Clinical Nurse Specialists in major trauma centers, and directors of clinical programs and directorates, to name a few. Faculty with prior military service continue to teach in specialty areas at San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC) and the Defense Medical Research and Training Institute (DMRTI), Fort Sam Houston, TX. Likewise, military emergency and critical care nurses and physicians brought their expertise into the courses. On a global level, the Surgeon General from Estonia and the Commander, DMRTI, recently toured the Simulation Center. The Amy Shelton and V.H. McNutt Distinguished Professorship in honor of nurses of the Armed Forces is a fitting tribute to the School of Nursing and its rich history of partnership with the military.

School of Nursing Staff Every organization has its unsung heroes: the individuals whose contributions are vital to the success of the organization yet may go unrecognized. In the SoN every work unit has staff who keeps that unit running smoothly. Some staff have been identified with the areas they support including the Academic Office, Center for Lifelong Learning, the Centers for Excellence, Office of Clinical Nursing Enterprise, Office of Nursing Research and Scholarship, Juntos Podemos and the Center for Simulation Innovation Other vital staff supports the Dean’s Office, Department Offices and the Office of Admissions and Student Services. The SoN is exceptionally proud of the longevity of many staff members. Those who have 20 or more years of service have been recognized below.

In Remembrance

Loretta James, former Assistant to the Dean of the School of Nursing, passed away Feb. 28, 2013 after a 9 month battle with cancer. She had retired from the SoN in November 2012 after assisting four Deans during 29 years of service. Loretta was a dedicated and loyal employee whose impeccable integrity and passion for excellence guided not only her work in everything that she did, but also guided her moral compass. She was a multi-talented person and an extremely organized problem solver. A saying that she lived by stands out as a wonderful reflection of her personality and character, “Good, better, best. Never let it rest. Till the good is better and the better is BEST!”

Tribute to Fred Boord

Fred worked for the School of Nursing for 31 years. He was hired in 1982 as an AV Equipment Tech and retired in 2013. Among Fred’s many contributions, he ran the curriculum resource center and housed and provided equipment and support for faculty instructional needs. In addition, he took many photographs and documented memorable moments in the school’s history. Fred’s easy going manner and dry sense of humor endeared him to faculty, students and staff.

Where Are They Now? Retired faculty member Dr. Mary Edwards has returned to San Antonio and is living at Patriot Heights, a retirement community near the UTHSC. She has assisted some new nursing schools with their curriculum, and teaches on occasion. Dr. Carolyn Gunning retired in 2008 after a distinguished career. She served as Dean of Marshall University School of Nursing, and then at Texas Woman’s University. Her last appointment was as Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at Texas Woman’s University. She now resides in Denton TX, but is an enthusiastic world traveler having visited such sites as South Africa, New Zealand, England, Norway, and Alaska. Dr. Adrianne Linton retired in 2012 after 35 years on the faculty. She lives in Spring Branch TX and continues writing her textbooks. Dr. Shirley Menard retired in 2005. She has continued nursing by caring for her husband who died in 2011 and her mother. She is enjoying crafts and time with her daughter and granddaughter. Ruth Stewart retired from the School of Nursing but remains one of the busiest people around. She continues to work for her passions: public health, nursing, environmental, and women’s issues. For true relaxation, she enjoys gardening, travel, her cat, and time with friends.

Tribute to Ruth Stewart

As one of the early SoN faculty, Ruth served as historian for many years. She maintained documents and memorabilia related to school milestones in addition to writing and editing previous editions of the School of Nursing History Book. Her efforts in conserving the history have made a significant contibution to the school. She continues to identify and gather artifacts that document the history of nursing and our SoN to preserve them in the Health Science Center Library Archives.
