THEPERFECT ACHIEVEMENT
Written by Karla Lees
Tom Armstrong is not only known for his charming smile and charismatic personality but also for his exceptional golf skills. As the esteemed President and CEO of the local Credit Union of Dodge City since 2012, he recently achieved his third hole-in-one during the 2024 Dodge City Area Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament at Mariah Hills Golf Course on Friday, April 19th, 2024. This remarkable accomplishment marks the third time he has achieved this rare feat in his illustrious career. Tom's passion for golf dates back to his early years, spent weekends at the local golf course, where he honed his skills and mastered the game.
His love for golf was nurtured when he received a golf bag full of clubs, balls, and tees from his grandfather in seventh grade in 1987. This collection, a mix of clubs, motivated him to set up a makeshift green in a nearby empty lot to practice with his neighbor. His real golfing journey began later in college during a golf class at DCCC, when he purchased his first full set of clubs. Tom vividly recalls his three hole-in-one moments, each one etched in his memory with specific details of the shots and circumstances surrounding them. The first one was during Men’s Night on #8 at Mariah Hills in the early 2000’s. This one looks the most impressive because it was a six iron from 206 yards. The second one was on #4 at the Dodge City Country Club. A Gap Wedge from 133 yards. It was early in the morning in 2009 and Tom was lucky enough to be playing with a witness. The third was in the Dodge City Chamber Tourney on #11. 169 yards with a 7 iron that spun back to the cup. Tom has the first two on a display that his dad made for him and will be making room for the third.
As a dedicated golfer, Tom introduced his daughters to the sport at a young age. While his youngest, Lindsay, played for fun, his oldest daughter, Ashlyn, developed a strong passion for golf. Ashlyn's talent blossomed over the years, winning tournaments and eventually playing at Kansas Wesleyan University. Tom and Ashlyn share a special bond through their love for golf and their shared experiences on the course. Despite his achievements and love for the game, Tom values the unpredictable and rewarding nature of golf, acknowledging that each round brings a mix of triumphs and challenges.
Tom's influence on the golfing world extends beyond his personal successes. He has passed on his passion for golf to his daughters, especially Ashlyn, who has made her mark in the golfing community. Their family legacy in golf continues to grow, with Tom providing unwavering support for Ashlyn's golfing journey. Tom's approach to golf emphasizes enjoyment and camaraderie over intense competition, highlighting the game's ability to bring joy and connection on and off the course.
