WHAT’S NEW FOR DODGE CITY DAYS 2019 Summer is finally here in Dodge City and you know what that means? Time to start making your Dodge City Days Plans! The festival is celebrating its 59th year and continues to bring new and exciting events to the community along with the festival favorites that have been around since the very beginning. This year’s festival is celebrating the world-famous Dodge City Municipal Cowboy Band. The theme “Strike Up the Band” pays homage to the 140th Anniversary of the Band and one of their more famous songs. Starting off Dodge City Days on Friday, July 26th is the very first Dodge City Days Steak Cookoff, brought to you by The Village Square Mall. This new event is sure to bring the best chefs in the West to Wright Park to compete for $2400 cash and entry into the SCA World Championship! The Smokin’ Saddles BBQ Competition kicks off on Saturday, July 27th with the professional and backyard BBQ competitions brought to you by National Beef and Centera Bank. There will be multiple food trucks and the popular Bud Light Tailgate mobile bar, so be sure to follow the BBQ aroma into the park and stay for food, drinks, music and fun! You don’t want to miss the Dodge City Days Kickoff Concert held at the United Wireless Arena on Saturday, July 27th. This year’s concert welcomes country legend Trace Adkins! Beat the Heat and come inside this amazing venue for an epic night of country music. The United Wireless Ninja Warrior Obstacle Challenge is back by popular demand on Sunday, July 28th. This 2-mile course is filled with obstacles that are both tough and fun! The day will start off with an “elite heat” at 9:30am, two “fun run” heats at 10:00am and 10:30am and then a 4-person team heat starting at 11:00am. Think you’re tough enough to take on this year’s Ninja Warrior Obstacle Challenge? Register now at dodgecitydays.org. Lastly, the fan favorite Longhorn Cattle Drive brought to you by Boot Hill Casino & Resort and the Dodge City Convention & Visitors Bureau will be on Saturday, August 3rs on Wyatt Earp Blvd. The cattle will start at 4th & Wyatt Earp and head directly West on Wyatt Earp. They will drive all the way down to about Wright Street and then turn around and head back to 4th street heading East. What a great way to relive the past of Ol’ Dodge City! KATHERINE BRUNS Vierthaler Kessen Optometry is excited to announce the addition of Dr. Katherine Bruns, OD to our Dodge City office. “In our continual effort to provide the best possible care and convenience for our patients, we are thrilled to have Dr. Bruns join our practice and the Dodge City community” says Dr. Lois Vierthaler Kessen. “Dr. Bruns is a very caring person who will take the time to listen to her patients and treat them as individuals. She will fit in perfectly with our ‘patients are our priority’ mindset”. Dr. Bruns will begin accepting patients on July 22, 2019. Dr. Katherine Bruns, O.D., a Salina, KS, native, received her Doctorate of Optometry from the Rosenberg School of Optometry, San Antonio, in 2019. A 2015 Kansas State University graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Life Science, Dr. Bruns was a proud member of the Kansas State University Marching Band. While at Rosenberg School of Optometry, she spent many hours tutoring future optometrists in areas of optics and biochemistry. She was a teaching assistant in the clinical skills labs and became a member of the Beta Sigma Kappa Optometric Honor Society. Her training at RSO also included an externship at the Wichita Veterans Administration hospital and another at a San Antonio private optometric practice. These externships emphasized ocular disease diagnosis and treatment, contact lens design and management , surgical co-management as well as primary care medical optometry. Dr. Bruns enjoys being involved in the community, attending events supporting Kansas State University, spending time with friends and family, and playing with her dog and cat, Ginger and Jack.

The Dodge City/Ford County Development Corporation, Dodge City Area Chamber of Commerce, and Dodge City Convention and Visitors Bureau have been working together to make Dodge City the best city in southwest Kansas to LIVE, WORK, and PLAY. Every day these three organizations work together to build a better Dodge City. Through this partnership, a website has been created to meet the needs of a large varied audience- Dodge City citizens, individuals interested in building or growing a business, those planning to move to our community, or for the person interested in enjoying Dodge City’s many tourist attractions. This landing page will be used as a source for those seeking information for visits to our community, looking for quality of life information, or Dodge City business and growth potential. “We’ve all concentrated on making our webpages customized for our particular audience, and with the development of this website, folks can use this one source to seek out all three organizations, ” says Joann Knight, Executive Director of the Dodge City/Ford County Development Corporation. Tara Burkhart, President of the Dodge City Area Chamber of Commerce announced the newly revised Chamber website, “We are thrilled to be a part of this effort, and this webpage will give our new page more exposure, which means more benefits for our members.” The trio have been making personal visits to businesses around Dodge City and thanking owners and operators for their continued support and investments in the community. “We wanted to first thank those who supported us, before we launched this website and wanted to gather suggestion on how we could improve our community and communications. We’ve gotten some great suggestions, and are excited to implement them,” stated Jan Stevens, Director of the Dodge City Convention and Visitors Bureau. “We are not yet done with our visits to the community leaders, but we wanted to get the combined website address out there so that everyone can use this resource,” Knight shared.

USD 443 BOARD OF EDUCATION LOOKS AT TRANSITIONING THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION BUILDING Now that construction is well underway for the new administration building, it is time to decide the best plan of action for the current facility. USD 443 BOE is committed to a plan of action that best serves the Dodge City community and the district. Because of several discussions, USD 443 Board of Education voted 7-0 at the June 10 board meeting to follow the path proposed by District Administration and Board Attorney Clayton Kerbs. First, the school district will issue a Request for Proposal (“RFP�) making the public aware that the building will be available for occupancy around July 2020. This RFP will include notice to potential buyers of known building deficiencies. Interested parties will be requested to provide a comprehensive plan and proof of financial ability to rectify the defects. The Board will evaluate all responses for a viable sale. Secondly, if no proposals are received, the school district will issue another RFP. If no bids are received, the school district will list the building for sale. Finally, if there is not a suitable buyer, the Board will consider demolition or donating the building. Before demolition, the school district could recycle and repurpose as much of the building as possible. FORD COUNTY RSVP AND THE RED CROSS PARTNER TO PROTECT OUR COMMUNITY A few years ago, volunteers from the Ford County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program started installing smoke alarms in at-risk homes. Lots of smoke alarms. Their project has been so successful that the American Red Cross honored Ford County RSVP with the organization’s Community Preparedness Award, June 8, in Topeka. Once they saw the response from the community, volunteers at the time decided to embrace the installations as one of their primary causes, and the group has run with that concept ever since. The goal for the entire Red Cross chapter that year was 1,000 smoke alarms installed in homes across the western two-thirds of the state. The Ford County RSVP program installed over 300 by itself. The Ford County RSVP program was launched in spring 1974 as an avenue for retired individuals to serve community needs and fellow seniors. Dodge City Community College has been the sponsoring agency for the majority of the organization’s existence. Since July of 2018 the group has installed some 203 smoke alarms in 72 homes. “I just keep them equipped and they keep putting them in,” said Deb Tucker, Disaster Program Manager for the Red Cross – who nominated the organization. “It’s really been a great partnership. The people of Ford County should be proud of what they are doing.” “We could not do this without our great volunteers,” said Lise O’Neal, interim RSVP director. “It’s also a great collaboration with Dodge City.” O’Neal said Dodge City officials help identify need and then point RSVP volunteers in the right direction. Ford County’s volunteers not only install the detectors but help residents develop fire escape plans and advise on preparation for other emergency situations. O’Neal said her volunteers often encounter residents who don’t even know what a smoke alarm is, and may not understand the importance of preparedness. She said the educational component is as important as the alarms. “We talked with one little girl, about seven years old,” O’Neal said. “When we asked her what she would do if there were a fire, she said that she would go hide in the closet. So it’s very important that we educate everyone in addition to the installations.” Tucker said that the group’s dedication has been evident since they took on the smoke alarm project. She said she started working with the group on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 2017, with minus-20 wind chills. “We still had five RSVP volunteers and five Red Cross workers,” Tucker said. “We installed over 80 alarms that day alone.” RSVP partners with the Red Cross – which furnishes the smoke alarms and other materials, while RSVP volunteers locate appropriate dwellings and handle the installations. The group also has special alarms for the hearing-impaired, with more visual cues to an emergency. The detectors are specially made with 10-year lithium batteries so they don’t need changed twice a year. RSVP matches people over age 55 with much-needed community projects or activities that suit the individual’s interests and skill set. Volunteers from the organization help provide local schools with reading tutors, serve as child advocates in the court system, deliver hot meals to seniors who may be homebound, provide transportation assistance, assist in grocery shopping, and assist in community recycling and beautification efforts.

Lisa Killion is an Event Manager at United Wireless Arena and Boot Hill Casino Conference Center. She enjoys interacting with all the people that she works with to plan events, as well as the attendees of those events. Helping people is very rewarding for her. Lisa is a southwest Kansas girl. She grew up in and graduated high school from Ulysses. She attended Emporia State University and graduated from Friends University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Management and Leadership. Service is part of who Lisa is. She is currently in the middle of her third term as a Board of Education member for USD 443. She has served as president of the Board for 8 of the 10 years. She also serves on the Crisis Center of Dodge City board, as well as the Dodge City Sports Commission. She is an active member of Abundant Life Family Church. As an Ambassador for the Chamber, she appreciates the opportunity to network with others in the community and to support the community. Lisa and her husband, Russell, have called Dodge City home for 23 years. Russell has jokingly told her she can only go to meetings if she sits on her hands, so she doesn’t volunteer for something else. Russell and Lisa have 3 grown children, who are her greatest gifts. Trevor and his wife, McKenna, live in Kansas City, MO. Lela lives in Dodge City, and Nick lives in Manhattan, KS. Two dogs, Walter and Dixie, round out the family.

46th Annual Kansas Shrine Bowl On June 8th, the Dodge City Sports Commission hosted the 46th Annual Kansas Shrine Bowl at Memorial Stadium. Throughout the week leading up to the game, many different organizations had a hand in taking care of and hosting hundreds of Kansas Shriners and Kansas Shrine Bowl participants. The Kansas Shrine Bowl game and activities work as a charitable organization which helps fund children in need across 22 different Shriners Hospitals for Children. As an organization, the Dodge City Sports Commission is honored to thank the Kansas Shrine Bowl for choosing Dodge City as their host site for the 2019 Kansas Shrine Bowl game. We would also like to thank Dodge City Community College, Dodge City Public Schools, Dodge City Convention & Visitors Bureau, Ford County, United Wireless Arena and Boot Hill Casino & Resort Conference Center, and the City of Dodge City for allowing the cooperation and use of all facilities needed to host the week’s events. What is a Touch-A-Truck event?
Touch-A-Truck is a Dodge City Days event which is comprised of 10-20 trucks or vehicles on display for kids and their families to tour and “touch”. Each vehicle must be accompanied by a driver or someone who can tour the kids through the vehicle and tell them how it works and what it is used for. This form serves to confirm your commitment to participate in this event.
Where and when does the event take place?
The event takes place during Dodge City Days in conjunction with the Classic Car Show on Saturday, August 3, 2019 from 10:00am – 3:00pm in Wright Park.
What time should I arrive with my vehicle at the event?
You can drop off your vehicle in Wright Park anytime between 7:00am and 9:30am on Saturday, August 3. Upon arrival the Dodge City Days committee will direct you where to park. Vehicles must be in place no later than 9:30am to ensure safety and avoid traffic with the Cattle Drive event that starts at 9:00am. Vehicles must be accompanied by an attendant during the times of the event (10am – 3pm). If you have any special needs for parking your vehicle, please indicate below under ’special requests’.
