DODGE CITY DAYS LOGO CONTEST UNDERWAY

The Dodge City Days festival will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2020, and a contest is being held to design the logo. The logo will be used for the Dodge City Days festival on the official Dodge City Days lapel pins, T-shirts, festival guide, social media, promotional material, merchandise and other possible mediums. “The Dodge City Days Committee thought creating a logo design contest would allow the community to create a special logo for this year’s 60th anniversary celebration,” said Dodge City Area Chamber of Commerce Events Director Joni Wittman. “The Dodge City Days Festival holds special memories for so many in our community and surrounding areas and we are excited to see what everyone creates. The submission deadline is 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2. After the submissions, the Dodge City Days Committee will select three designs that will be voted on in a poll by the community. The winning design will receive $100, two T-shirts with the new Dodge City Days logo and two lapel pins. Visit www.dodgecitydays.org/2020-logo-contest.html for the full guidelines and entry form to enter the contest. By Vincent Marshall / Managing Editor at the Dodge City Daily Globe

GROWERS SEEK TO MAXIMIZE RETURN ON INVESTMENT BY: CROP QUEST, INC. For grain producers, is maximizing the return on investment synonymous with maximizing yield? Is increasing return on investment synonymous with cutting costs? The short answer to both of these is actually no. Maximizing yield for the sake of higher yield might mean adding unnecessary inputs that have little to no chance of maintaining the yield potential of a crop. On the other end, cutting costs to try to save money will tend to reduce yield that could easily have been preserved by good management of essential inputs. For growers who deal with fluctuating commodity prices, it is imperative that revenue is maximized. Grain should be considered as currency, so growing more bushels is important to earning a higher return on investment. The key is to put all the proper inputs into the crop – at the right time – and preserve as much yield potential as possible. There is a misconception that certain inputs can add yield to a field. In reality, all inputs can do is help reduce any loss of yield POTENTIAL. So, focusing on inputs that will give the best chance for a return is key. And focusing on timing is even more crucial. 2019 has been a challenging year. Certain areas of the country experienced weather delays that are putting growers in a tough financial position. Other areas are profiting from the unusually beneficial rains. Regardless of the situation any grower may be in, it remains important to maximize return on investment by continuing to put all the necessary inputs into a crop so the highest yield possible can occur for the hand we are dealt. This is where we believe Crop Quest is most important to have on your team. We do not have a product lineup to sell our customers. Our mission is to help our customers to become more efficient and more profitable through our consulting and recommendations. This February, we are hosting a public event called Grower Focus. It is open to the entire farming community. We have asked Randy Dowdy to come to Dodge City on Friday, February 7, 2020. We hope you will join us at the United Wireless Arena at the Boot Hill Casino & Resort to hear Randy talk about how to maximize your inputs to grow higher yields on your ground. Randy Dowdy is a national corn and soybean yield champion. He is a first-generation farmer that has not been afraid to ask questions and learn what it takes to get the most out of your ground, and he is anxious to share his experiences with us! This interactive seminar is going to be much more than a focus on growing the highest yields possible. It is meant to challenge growers to better understand the plant, the soil and the environment that affects our ability to retain the most yield potential in all our crops. Sometimes improving your operation starts with asking “Why?”. Randy will challenge you to question what you are doing and share ideas that can be implemented on your operation. We know that Randy will challenge our Crop Quest Agronomists as well! Whether you agree or disagree with the practices these high yielding producers employ, we are confident that you will find the information presented valuable and inspire you to continue to improve your bottom line. Our Crop Quest Team is delighted to be able to host this event. Come and meet with our Crop Quest Team and enjoy a wonderful Prime Rib lunch as well! We encourage you to register today at www.GrowerFocus.com or call 620-225-2333. Promo code: Chamber to receive $5 off registration.

Central Care Cancer Center in Dodge City Receives Recognition for High-Quality Cancer Care from Largest Oncology Society in United States (Dodge City, KS) – Central Care Cancer Center in Dodge City has been recognized by the QOPI® Certification Program LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, Inc. (ASCO®), as successfully completing a three-year certification program for outpatient hematology-oncology practices that meet nationally recognized standards for quality cancer care. The QOPI® Certification Program builds on ASCO’s Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI®). “We’re extremely proud to receive this certification from the QOPI® Certification Program, which underscores our continued commitment to excellence for our patients,” said Alfredo Lopez, Chief Executive Officer of Central Care Cancer Center. “Having access to the highest quality of cancer care that’s close to home and near loved ones, is imperative when conquering cancer.” In applying for certification, Central Care Cancer Center participated in a voluntary comprehensive site assessment against clearly specified standards that are consistent with national guidelines and was successful in meeting the standards and objectives of the QOPI® Certification Program. “ASCO’s QOPI® Certification is voluntary, so a practice that undertakes this process is demonstrating its commitment to providing patients with high quality care,” said ASCO President Howard A. “Skip” Burris III, MD, FACP, FASCO. “A practice that achieves Certification has evaluated its processes, benchmarked its performance against other top-performing practices, and can be confident in its dedication to quality and safety excellence, as well as continues quality improvement.” The QOPI® Certification Program, LLC was launched in January 2010, and nearly 300 practices are currently certified. This certification for outpatient oncology practices is the first program of its kind for oncology in the United States and in 2016 was expanded internationally. The QOPI® Certification Program seal designates those practices that successfully met the standards and objectives of the QOPI® Certification Program, which includes scoring above the threshold on the key QOPI® quality measures and meeting chemotherapy safety standards established by ASCO and the Oncology Nursing Society.

UPDATES FROM THE CONVENTIONS & VISITORS BUREAU Market Analysis

On Monday, November 4th, Bruce Grover and Bobby Sloan from Imagemakers, (the company that was hired to conduct the marketing study for the Convention and Visitors Bureau), shared their findings with about 30 stakeholders in a two- hour session, and again at a one- hour work session with the city commission. They shared their recommendations and evaluations based on surveys conducted and research made by their team of experts for improving the overall marketing of the history, heritage, and activities of the community. They compared targeted audiences, comparable cities, logos, tag lines, web sites, and other elements. A digital audit was completed and included social media, online reviews, Facebook impressions, and other digital pieces. The general recommendations that were made included taking a fresh look at all foundation pieces, and shifting branding from the ‘old west’ to the ‘wild west,’ to modernize, clarify, and simplify our marketing message. The first order of business in their recommendation was to reposition and rebrand.

Hunting Contest

The Dodge City CVB pheasant hunting contests, Bounty Bird and Rooster Roundup kicked off this month on November 9th. 150 banded pheasants were released on Ford County Walk-in Hunting land, adding an incentive to hunt in Ford County. If hunters are lucky enough to bag one of the banded birds, they can return the bands at the Dodge City Visitor Information Center for a gift and register for the appropriate contest. As always, this is an excellent opportunity for hunters as there are more chances to win prizes when you hunt in Ford County.

Jan’s Retirement

After 13 years of service, Dodge City CVB Director Jan Stevens is set to retire in January 2020. During Jan’s time at the CVB, she has served as a board of director’s member of the Dodge City Chamber of Commerce, Festivals of Dodge City, Kansas Cowboy Hall of Fame, Humanities Kansas, and many other statewide and community organizations, events and committees. She was also a large part of bringing the recognition of National Day of the Cowboy to the State of Kansas along within the City of Dodge. Jan has also received the Dodge City Chamber of Commerce’s Bronco Buster Award. Jan leaves the CVB to the fantastic team she has built around her to spend more time with her family and grandchildren.

Holiday Lights Contest

The Dodge City CVB, partnering with the Dodge City Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Dodge City Daily Globe, is kicking off the Third Annual Holiday Lights Contest! In years past, Dodge City had entire neighborhoods that decorated their homes for Christmas. It indeed was a family event to load everyone up, and drive around town to view the beautifully and skillfully decorated homes! Over the years, through a change of homeownership, and perhaps other factors, the Christmas lights, and decorations dwindled, to the point where it had been challenging to find enough homes to fill even an hour of driving and viewing. We felt that, with a little incentive and encouragement, our neighbors might begin to bring back this tradition. And, they certainly have! With around 30 entries the past two (2) years, the contest has exceeded our expectations, and we look forward to this trend continuing. The entry deadline for this year’s contest is 5:00 pm on December 12. A committee of local volunteers will judge the entries. The First Place entry will receive $200 in Chamber Bucks, and Second Place will receive $100 in Chamber Bucks’ Each will also receive a yard sign designating that home as the selected winner(s). The Dodge City Daily Globe will follow-up with a feature article on the winning entries. Information is available on the Dodge City Daily Globe’s website (www.dodgeglobe. com), CVB’s website (www.visitdodgecity.org), as well the CVB Facebook page.

Outdoor Writers of Kansas

The Dodge City CVB, along with the Boot Hill Casino and Resort, and Horsetheif Reservoir, will be sponsoring the Outdoor Writers of Kansas Conference in November. The conference schedule of activities includes time to visit the Dodge City High School Outdoor Club, Horsethief Reservoir, and a morning of hunting in Southwest Kansas. The group is excited for the opportunity to explore what Ford County and the surrounding area have to offer outdoorsmen and women.

DC3 RANKED NO. 1 IN TERMS OF ‘COST AND FINANCING By Lance Ziesch In a new study released on Aug. 19 by WalletHub.com, DC3 was ranked No. 1 in the “Cost and Financing” category of the 18 Kansas community colleges evaluated. “The DC3 ranking of No. 1 among Kansas community colleges in ‘Cost and Financing’ reflects the prudent stewardship and oversight of college operations,” said Dr. Glendon Forgey, DC3 vice president for administration and finance. “The college has implemented many cost-saving and cost-cutting strategies to keep operation costs low, thus providing very affordable tuition and fee rates for students and families.” “Although there is always room for improvement, I think this ranking speaks highly of our institution,” said DC3 President, Dr. Harold Nolte. “At DC3, we strive to provide a high-quality education at an affordable price, and this study reflects that we are on the right track.” Overall statewide, DC3 ranked No. 5 in terms of best education at the lowest price. Coming in at first through fourth places were Manhattan Area Technical College, Pratt Community College, Hutchinson Community College, and Colby Community College, respectively. “WalletHub compared more than 700 community colleges across 19 key indicators of cost and quality,” said WalletHub, in a release on its website. “Our data set ranges from the cost of in-state tuition and fees to student-faculty ratio to graduation rate.” According to the U.S. Department of Education website, there are a total of 1,462 community colleges in the country—with 1,047 of those being public and 415 being private institutions. Of the 710 community colleges evaluated by WalletHub.com, DC3 came in at No. 303. WalletHub is a personal finance website based in Washington, D.C. It was launched in 2013, and it is owned by Evolution Finance, Inc., which is a parent company of the credit card website CardHub.com.

New members and officers of Dodge City Community College’s Kappa Psi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa were inducted into the honors society on Tuesday, November 12th at a ceremony in the Little Theatre. Membership in the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society goes beyond recognition of academic success. While membership does come with high academic standards – PTK requires a minimum 3.5 grade point average – it also implies that a student recognizes the value of leadership and service. PTK members are eligible for millions in exclusive scholarships and grants, as well as opportunities to build the honor society’s four hallmarks of scholarship, leadership, fellowship and service. Perhaps as important as anything, active participation in PTK builds personal connections with a network of like-minded people. New Honor Society members inducted Tuesday are: Dominique Foster, Annie Jo Neuschafer, Gwendolyn Racy, Sarae Ricke, Jonathan Smith, Janet Smith, Kieara Stokes, and Ashlyn Webb. New officers inducted are: Sierra Swank, Ruth Mendez, Kieara Stokes, Kyle Wolnik, and Jonathan Smith.

This new partnership, called the Get Ahead Program, is a nationwide cooperative effort between DTNA, participating diesel schools, and DTNA service network locations that offer diesel schools access to Internet-based training free of charge. In this case, the “diesel school” is DC3, and the “DTNA service network location” is Truck Center Companies (TCC). TCC is one of the nation’s largest full-service Freightliner dealerships with 12 business locations, including one in Dodge City. The idea for starting the Get Ahead partnership at DC3 originated from a diesel tech advisory board meeting last spring, Colby Kline, DC3 professor of diesel technology, said. Professor Colby Kline works with students during class The advisory board is made up of businesses who hire DC3 students and provide needed feedback regarding diesel tech curriculum. And one of the businesses represented on the board is TCC. “The board helps us in so many ways,” Kline said. “Besides being the businesses who hire our students, they also help us get equipment at reduced rates.” So, after the advisory board meeting, Kline and the TCC recruiting director, Jim Walsh, began working on the partnership. Part of this collaboration resulted in TCC bringing a new Freightliner truck to campus for Senior Day back in September. “In a nutshell, students can get access to all the online training that’s available to a professional technician on our Freightliner and Daimler products, while they’re still in college,” Walsh said. “The benefit for a company like ours is we invest thousands and thousands of dollars in training people after they graduate, and it just accelerates our training curve.” Typically, TCC spends about $50,000 in training costs for each new technician they hire, Walsh said. Through the Get Ahead Program, diesel tech students receive access to all the online training that Freightliner technicians get. And if they complete the training, they become system certified for any company who completes warranty work on Daimler products, such as Freightliner, Detroit Diesel, Western Star and Thomas Bus. DC3 student works on a part as part of the diesel technology program In addition, every participating school receives 10 copies of DiagnosticLink for free. DiagnosticLink is a computer-based diagnostic software for Detroit powertrain and Freightliner vehicle systems. It can display engine control unit information, diagnostic fault codes, and instrumentation, as well as run service routines. Jeff Cole, DC3 professor of diesel technology and workforce development chair, said the program definitely puts students a step ahead when they start their jobs, in terms of training. But it also can bring a potential pay bump, he said. “The strength of this program is students will get job training here at DC3, which is at the same standard as what the industry provides,” Cole said. “The training through this program also will be more up to date than a textbook-based curriculum, because information becomes obsolete so quickly these days due to changes in technology.” Another bonus to the Get Ahead program is that diesel tech instructors, such as Cole and Kline, can stay current with their certifications more easily. “I’m excited about the program,” Cole said. “I think it will help open doors for other partnerships, because a lot of companies are begging for good diesel technicians.”
