SOUTHWEST KANSAS CHAMBERS TO OFFER ASSOCIATION HEALTH PLAN The Dodge City Area Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to potentially sponsor a health insurance benefit to our members. Along with the Southwest Kansas Chamber Association, we could serve seven communities to increase access to more affordable health insurance and improve the health of our region. This group will include Chamber members from the following communities: Colby, Dodge City, Garden City, Hugoton, Liberal, Scott City, and Ulysses. An AHP or Association Health Plan can include these benefits; Dual Plan Options where you choose your own plan, Low individual and family deductibles, High deductible health plan or HSA (Health Savings Account), Coverage for pre existing conditions, Nationwide provider network, and customizable plans. We also intend to offer dental and vision coverage as part of the package. There are two stipulations to acquire access to this benefits package, the first one is to become a Chamber member by January 1st at one of the participating Chambers, and to have all of your employees complete a health questionnaire (open 9/16-10/15). You are not obligated any further than that until you sign at enrollment, but you will NOT be able to participate if your employees do not complete a questionnaire. The more people that participate, the more affordable everyone’s rates will be! The Health Questionnaires are available now! If you are already a Chamber Member, you should have received the link for the questionnaire from Anna Bjerken. If you have not or are not a member and would like the link, please contact Anna at abjerken@ dodgechamber.com. The link can then be forwarded to all associates to fill out. As the Chamber, our members are OUR business and we look forward to partnering with you to enhance our regions health and economy.

KMOM CHARITABLE DENTAL EVENT
The Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation (KDCF) was established in 2002, from a grant from the Kansas Dental Association Relief Fund. Its mission is to provide funding and resources to improve oral health in the state of Kansas.
Each year, dentists in Kansas donate approximately $50,000 to our annual campaign, which is used to grow the KDCF Endowment, a fund which now exceeds $300,000. The income generated from that trust, as well as other restricted gifts, are used to fund grants and scholarships to improve dental access in Kansas. Additionally, the KDCF has donated more than $18 million in dental care through our signature event, the Kansas Mission of Mercy (KMOM). The Kansas Mission of Mercy (KMOM) is a two-day free dental clinic hosted once a year in different areas of the state. To date, 29,685 patients have been served thanks to the generous contributions of Kansas dentists, hygienists, and dental assistants. KMOM provides cleanings, fillings and extractions to both children and adults, and volunteer dentists, dental hygienists, and assistants do this at no charge. We donate care to 1,000-2,000 patients during the two-day event, many who will wait in line overnight for much needed dental care. Make a Donation You can help us deliver this care by making a donation to the Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation. We need local support to provide dental care to 1,500 patients. For every $100 donated, KMOM can provide over $1,000 in free dental care. Help us reach our goal of raising $140,000 for KMOM - Dodge City. Learn more about the event and sponsorship by contacting Anna Bjerken: abjerken@ dodgechamber.com

DC3 BEGINS CONQUISTADOR COMPANIONS PROGRAM
Being homesick or just plain lonely is a major concern for college students, especially freshmen. Loneliness and depression obviously negatively affect classes and socialization – potentially leading to dropout. Even students from right here in Kansas can be five or six hours from their families and friends, often for the first time. The Conquistador Companions program can help students feel a sense of belonging in the community they call home for almost nine months of the year. To help create those bonds between the students and our community, the Conq Companions program joins “host” families with a student for the school year. Host families won’t provide a second home or be expected to be a constant presence in the student’s life. The hope is that families will attend a few games or performances, invite their student to a meal or favorite gathering, and basically be a supportive and positive influence while welcoming a young mind to our community. Dr. Glendon Forgey, CFO and vice president of administration for DC3 sees the program not only as building community connections, but also as a way to help keep students in school. “It’s definitely a retention tool,” he said. “Students who feel like they are a part of something are more motivated. That’s why host families are so important.” A host family can sometimes be a student’s sounding board for advice or to talk out concerns. Roommates or coaches or teammates may not always be the most comfortable place to seek advice or just sound off. “They can be a positive influence on the lives of our students,” Forgey said. “Sometimes they might just be a quiet place to go study and get away from the campus for a while.” Forgey said with a substantial portion of students from out of state, and many international students, there are going to be some who can’t make it home for holidays and breaks. “A lot of our students are not from this area,” he said. “They don’t really know anybody so we want them to have a good support base. If they need somebody else to talk to maybe they can reach out to their host family.” Things like an occasional text message or email asking how class is going or how they have been feeling can often be the difference between a student lying in bed depressed all day or getting up and going to class. Forgey said he’s been involved with organizations like Conquistador Companions at other institutions, and touted the benefits to the community and students.

“It was very well received,” he said. “We had a lot of success, not just with athletes, but with musicians and theater students and singers. The students absolutely love it. Whole churches sometimes bring in entire teams. It’s a good way to build rapport from both sides.” Host families can indicate the type of student they would like to host. Forgey said he hopes families will find students with similar interests to develop an even deeper connection.

SUNPORCH OF DODGE CITY NOW OFFERS IN-HOUSE SPEECH/LANGUAGE THERAPY A new service at SunPorch of Dodge City is now available to help elders communicate their wants and needs more clearly, said Sheila Bills, state director of Aegis Therapies. Aegis has added speech/language therapy to its other services at SunPorch, which include physical and occupational therapies. Swallowing difficulties and dementia-related issues are common problems that can be alleviated with the support of a speech/ language pathologist (SLP), Bills said.
Torrie Smith and Sydnee Cole are the two SLPs on the SunPorch team.
“Torrie and Sydnee are available to assess, diagnose and treat issues related to swallowing, dementia and other concerns,” said Bills, who also is an SLP. “They are trained in dysphagia, which refers to swallowing disorders.
“When someone has difficulty swallowing, it takes more time and effort to move food or liquid to the stomach safely.”
Causes of dysphagia include aging, limited motor functions, lack of adequate sensation in the throat and various inadequacies with the swallowing mechanism. When dementia is the issue, an SLP provides re-education in language skills and auditory processing. “Tasks involving recall and retention help the patient improve in areas of general knowledge, immediate memory skills and problem solving,” Bills noted. “The goal is to help the person better communicate wants, needs and concerns.” SLPs also treat conditions involving hearing, articulation, coordination of breathing with speaking and swallowing, and skills for everyday living. “The addition of SLP services at SunPorch demonstrates that its staff members are very progressive in making sure elders are number one,” Bills commented. “They realize that speech/language therapy is very important and will do all they can to enhance the elders’ quality of life. Speech therapy plays a big role in this.” Debbie Allen, SunPorch marketing and community liaison, said speech therapy has been “hard to come by in smaller communities. We are very fortunate to be able to provide this service to our elders. “It is a great addition to our in-house therapy department, especially for those who have dementia or are recovering from a stroke,” Allen continued. “All of us appreciate our new partnership with Aegis Therapies.”

SACRED HEART CATHEDRAL CATHOLIC SCHOOL RINGS IN THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR!
Sacred Heart Cathedral Catholic School welcomes the start of the 2019-2020 school year with excitement and continued dedication to “Forming children to be Disciples of Jesus Christ”. With the addition of 14 new families and 8 new staff members, Sacred Heart gets into the year ready to “Follow Jesus”. We are now in the first year of implementing our Virtue-Based Restorative Expectations. Last year all staff members read the book “Virtue-Based Restorative Discipline” written by Lynne M. Lang and began to discuss and put it into action. This year, the school has created posters pictured with students modeling the virtues of faith, hope, charity, prudence, justice, temperance, and fortitude. “This teaches students that they are part of the solution for encountering anti-social behavior such as bullying. It also lays a foundation of spirituality for parents and kids which can in turn strengthen their relationship with others and God.”-Lynne Lang writes in her book. There are also several posters with a behavior matrix printed and displayed in appropriate areas of the school. For instance, the behaviors expected in the lunchroom differ from those expected on the playground. The older students (grades 5-8) get involved with teaching the younger students these values and expectations whether it be in the hallways, during assemblies, Mass, or on the playground. Student leadership is growing, and the faculty see it making a significant difference in the environment at the school. We are also in year two, of our House system. All students and staff are welcomed into 1 of 4 “Houses”. The “Houses” are named after Saints complete with family crests, banners, t-shirts, individualized prayers, and other activities and events celebrated throughout the year. Each “House” has students from Kindergarten up through 8th grade. Students are put into the same “House” as siblings and not divided by the typical extracurriculars that often dictate belonging. One of the best parts about this program is that it is led by 7th and 8th graders who organize all activities throughout the year along with the help of faculty advisors. Throughout the year, service projects, fundraisers, holidays, prayer times and other activities revolve around these unique “family” style groups. It instills leadership, togetherness, community, celebration, fun, and a relationship with Jesus, that continues to drive the mission of the school in the community. To see the joy and excitement on the faces of the younger students when a “big kid” includes them in a game or prayer, is precious. To witness leadership shine through the efforts of an 8th grader when they invite a small child, who is nervous to participate, is a beautiful sign of the Lord’s presence in our school. To learn more about how you can help get involved with our “House” system or support our school please contact Lynee Habiger, Principal lynee.habiger@dcsshcs.com 620-227-6532 or Becca Studt, Director of School and Parish Advancement at bstudt@ dodgecitycathedral.com
