Al-Corn Clean Fuel celebrates 20 year anniversary By TIM RUDNICKI Executive Director Minnesota Bio-Fuels Assoc. Al-Corn was established in 1994 by local farmers who were looking for new opportunities to add value to their corn corp. In 1996, Al-Corn commenced operations producing 10 million gallons of ethanol a year. In 1998, Al-Corn expanded its capacity to 15 million gallons a year and three years later, it doubled its production to 30 million gallons a year. In 2007, it raised its output once more to 45 million gallons a year. Doyal said a majority of AlCorn’s shareholders today still live within a 20-mile radius of the plant. Even some of its board members like its current chairman, Rodney Jorgenson, have been with Al-Corn since 1994. “When I think back over the last 20 years, I’m reminded of what can be accomplished when people band together with common purpose. As farmers, our goal was to increase the price of our corn through processing. I doubt any of us could have imagined the success we would have,” Jorgenson said. In the last few years, AlCorn’s has been producing 50 million gallons of ethanol annually and it recently announced it will expand its capacity in 2017 to produce 120 million gallons a year, which will make Al-Corn one of the largest ethanol producers in the state. In conjunction with Al-Corn’s 20-year anniversary, it sponsored E85 promotions at two Kwik Trips in Owatonna and hosted a celebratory dinner with shareholders, industry partners, local and state government officials at the Steele County Fairgrounds in Owatonna yesterday. Al-Corn is a member of the Minnesota Bio-Fuels Association, a non-profit trade associa-
tion that represents Minnesota’s renewable fuels industry. “For 20 years, Al-Corn has played an active role in reducing prices at the pump, giving consumers access to cleaner fuels and reducing our nation’s dependency on foreign oil,” said Tim Rudnicki, executive director at the Minnesota Bio-Fuels Association. In the past 20 years, Al-Corn has processed over 226 million bushels of corn and supported the corn farmers in Claremont and its surrounding areas. During its two decades of operations, Al-Corn has increased its ethanol yield per bushel to 2.85 gallons per bushel and reduced its energy usage by over 35 percent. “It took courage and energy to create the organization that stands today as Al-Corn Clean Fuel; everyone played a significant role,” said Randall Doyal, CEO of Al-Corn. “As the membership of AlCorn looks to the future, the standard that guides the cooperative is the same as it has always been: dynamic growth to protect and enhance the value of processing so that all members benefit,” Doyal said.
About The Minnesota Bio-Fuels Association The Minnesota Bio-Fuels Association is a non-profit organization that represents and promotes the renewable fuels industry in Minnesota. We work closely with industry stakeholders to achieve our collective goal of a greener future, a stronger economy in Minnesota, consumer savings at the pump and a more energy-independent America.

As part of a recent test of high oleic soybean oil in a Purdue University dining hall, chefs witnessed the oil’s excellent stability and other positive performance attributes in a product without trans fat. Today, the university is just the latest example of a customer evaluating whether to switch over to using the oil in day-today operations. More customers using high oleic would mean extra demand
Thank you to all our 2016 Dodge County Fair 4-H Ribbon Auction Buyers. This year’s Ribbon Auction raised $38,250
for high oleic soybean oil and extra profit potential for all U.S. soybean farmers. To seal the deal, however, these customers need to see a larger supply of available oil. “We’re excited to see this oil perform as we thought it would; now it’s up to us as farmers to show that we can grow enough,” soy checkoff farmer-leader Mike Beard says of Purdue’s trial. Beard grows high oleic soybeans on his farm in Frankfort, Indiana. “We’ve
got some top-notch restaurants that want to use it, but switching oils is a major investment. It’s understandable that they’d wait until the supply is stable.” In 2016, farmers across 11 states planted approximately 450,000 acres of high oleic soybeans, building supply for potential customers. New delivery locations and opportunities for contracts could become available next year, allowing more farmers to benefit from the premiums associated

with high oleic varieties. Increasing high oleic soybean acreage to meet demand will be crucial in capitalizing on the opportunity the oil brings. To maximize market share and soybean farmer profitability, the soybean industry has set a goal of 18 million acres of high oleic soybeans planted by 2023. Meeting that goal could mean as much as an additional $1.7 billion in farmer revenue each year. Purdue’s trial, a checkoff-funded study conducted by the university’s Food Science Department, found positive results for high oleic’s lifespan, absorption properties and flavor profile, compared with the preservative-fortified canola oil the dining hall used previously. “High oleic oil is phenomenal in its performance,” says Purdue’s executive sous chef Jack Kennedy. “Comparatively speaking, we find that it lasts longer than the other oils.” USB’s 70 farmer-directors work on behalf of all U.S. soybean farmers to achieve maximum value for their soy checkoff investments. These volunteers invest and leverage checkoff funds in programs and partnerships to drive soybean innovation beyond the bushel and increase preference for U.S. soy. That preference is based on U.S. soybean meal and oil quality and the sustainability of U.S. soybean farmers. As stipulated in the federal Soybean Promotion, Research and Consumer Information Act, the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service has oversight responsibilities for USB and the soy checkoff.

Summer Car Care
Make selling your car a cinch
Escalating costs of new cars have led many buyers to look to the preowned vehicle market when the time comes to replace their existing automobiles. Preowned vehicles can be a great bargain, putting drivers behind the wheels of relatively new cars at a fraction of the cost of brand new cars. While the rising reputation of preowned vehicles has been good for automotive dealerships with vast inventories of
trade-ins, it’s also been good for private sellers, who no longer have to deal with the stigma once assigned to preowned cars and trucks. Private sellers who want to get top dollar for their preowned vehicles can take several simple steps that might help them sell their vehicles quickly and at a price they can be happy with. • Organize maintenance receipts. According to Edmunds. com, an online resource for all
McKern Riess Insurance Agency
things automotive, the average price of a preowned car reached a record $16,800 in 2014. That’s a significant sum of money, and as a result preowned vehicle buyers are no longer taking the risks they might once have been willing to take when buying older, less expensive cars and trucks. Many prospective buyers expect to see a vehicle’s maintenance history, so sellers should organize their maintenance receipts for everything from routine oil changes to tire rotations and so on. If you did not keep your receipts, visit your mechanic and request a statement indicating your vehicle maintenance history. Make copies of these receipts and statements and have them readily available when prospective buyers come to look at your vehicle. • Get a vehicle inspection before putting it up for sale. Many sellers put their cars on the market and then wait weeks, if not months, before they sell their vehicles. That may be a byproduct of misjudging the market value

of their vehicles. Have your vehicle inspected before putting it up for sale so you know its true value. Share the results of the inspection with prospective buyers so they feel more comfortable purchasing your vehicle. • Address any issues that come to light during the inspection. Fix any minor issues, like broken taillights, dents, scratches and worn down tires before putting the vehicle up for sale. Such damage is typically inexpensive to fix, but buyers won’t want to see a car with such issues, which suggests sellers did not care much about the vehicle. If any larger issues arise during the inspection, consider trading the vehicle in rather than selling it on your own. Dealers get discounts on body work, so you may get more money for a tradein with body damage than you would get for the same car selling it on your own. • Be courteous with prospective buyers. Customer service is often an overlooked part of selling a preowned vehicle. Be cour-

teous with prospective buyers, patiently answering all of their questions and allowing them to size up the vehicle as they see fit. Always go with prospective buyers on a test drive, taking a friend or relative along so you are not alone with a stranger in the car. If buyers want to take the vehicle to their own mechanic, agree to it so long as you can come along and be present when any inspection is performed. Being respectful of the position preowned-vehicle buyers are in is a great way to develop a rapport that can help you sell your vehicle that much quicker. The preowned-vehicle market is booming, and private sellers can employ several selling tactics to get the best price possible for their cars and trucks.

What is grief like? Grief is like a series of waves that come and go, feelings that vary in intensity over a long period of time as we are constantly reminded of changes that result from the death of our loved one. We need to take time to face our emotions and feelings. Then make careful plans for our new lives without the deceased. Our feelings and grief may seem unpredictable and confused at times, but that is perfectly normal. Direction with dignity from Michaelson Funeral Home in Owatonna.

REAL ESTATE Take the lead in your home search! Make the most of your home appraisal When homeowners think about renovating their properties, many first need to secure some funding to finance such projects. Some may tap into the equity of their homes by refinancing an existing
mortgage, while others may apply for home equity loans. Taking the latter approach may require certain steps, including an assessment of how much the home and property is worth.
Home appraisals compare your home to neighboring properties to determine your home’s current market value. Homeowners can facilitate the process by having certain information readily avail-

nance can impress the appraiser. Removing clutter and cleaning up the home’s interior can make the home appear larger, possibly increasing its value as a result. It may be worth it to invest some more money into the property before having an appraisal done. A study sponsored by the National Association of Realtors says wood floors, landscaping and an enclosed garage can lead to a more favorable appraisal. An appraiser will spend roughly 30 minutes in a home. Try to give that person space to do his or her job. Following the appraiser around during an inspection can raise a red flag that something is wrong with the house that you don’t want to be seen. Turn lights on throughout the house, make sure the heating or cooling system is functioning at full capacity and keep pets locked away. Move items that can impede access to basements or attics. An accurate assessment of the value of your home will give banks the information they need to determine loan amounts for future renovation projects. Providing background information on the home and having a well-maintained property can improve the chances of a favorable appraisal.

information that can tell loan officers if the house is worth the loan amount. Expect to pay a fee for the appraisal, which is generally included in your closing costs. The appraiser gathers information for the appraisal report from a number of sources, but the process often begins with a physical inspection of the property, both inside and out. He or she also will compare your home against a few others in the neighborhood, which are known as comparables, or comps. Appraisals will be based on recent prices of comparable properties as well as other factors. Apart from the improvements done to the home, there are other ways to get a higher appraisal amount. The appraiser may consider the overall maintenance of the home and property. It is wise to consider curb appeal and ensure the home is clean and maintained when the appraiser arrives. When preparing for appraisers, homeowners should consider and collect the following information: • If your home was built on the largest lot in the community. • If you have made significant upgrades since it was last appraised, such as installing a new roof or siding. Don’t overlook smaller renovations, like extra insulation added or sealing drafty windows, which can increase a home’s value. • Proof that you have used sustainable resources or if you participated in any energy-savings programs. Naturally, any expansion projects, such as adding another bedroom or extending the footprint of the home, should be mentioned. How to transform a fixer-upper when visiting properties. Cosmetic issues include all of the easily replaceable items in a home, such as carpeting, appliances, interior paint colors and cabinetry. Focus on the bones of the house — the architectural integrity and those little touches that you envision having a “wow” factor.
and condo sales during the year were flipped properties. This marked an increase from the same time the previous year. Investing in a fixer-upper requires a leap of faith and a vision of what the home can look like in the future. Turning a real estate lemon into lemonade requires certain skills and a good measure of patience. The following are some guidelines to get anyone started. • Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Make an honest assessment of your abilities and which renovations, if any, you can handle. If you are unskilled or inexperienced working with your hands, then it can be easy for an investment property to quickly become a money pit. Before pur-
chasing a property, hire a trained home inspector to tour the home with you and point out all of the areas that will need renovation. With this list, begin getting estimates on how much money the work will entail. Determine

• Seek the help of experts. Some flippers think they’ll save the most money by doing all of the work themselves. This isn’t always the case. Professional architects, designers and contractors may help you save money. Contractors have an intimate knowledge of where to buy materials and may be able to negotiate prices based on wholesale or trade costs. In addition, experts can help you avoid common pitfalls because they’ve already done this type of work time and again. It’s smart to rely on expert advice, even if it means investing a little bit more. • Save money by doing some work yourself. While the pros may tackle the more complex parts of a given project, such as rewiring electricity or changing the footprint of a home, you can still be involved. Ask to par-
• Recognize that not everything must be completely redone. Realize that, in some instances, a coat of paint and some new accents may be all you need to transform a space. For example, if kitchen cabinets are in good condition, see if they can be refaced or painted instead of replaced entirely. Install new door pulls/handles to add visual interest. Look for some ready-made items, such as bookshelves, instead of installing custom carpentry. • Think about what the buyer wants and not what you want. Renovate with an eye toward prospective buyers’ needs. Keep things neutral and accommodating. Research the latest trends to understand what buyers might be seeking in a home. You want potential buyers to envision themselves moving right in. Renovating a fixer-upper takes time, but it can be a worthwhile project, and one that can help anyone turn a profit in a booming real estate market.
