Laptop Design Pioneer Dies
Bill Moggridge, a British man known as the portable computer (laptop) designer died of cancer at age 69, Saturday (09/08/2012), in San Francisco, USA. Men’s full name William Grant “Bill” Moggridge, born in London, June 25, 1943. Grid Compass, is the best known works of Moggridge. In 1979, he designed a computer with a flat screen that can be opened and closed on the keyboard. That computer recently released to the market by the Grid Systems Corp. company in 1982, the price is very expensive, which is USD 8,150. At that time, the Grid Compass is often called ”computer in a bag”. Because of its practicality, the Grid Compass that was covered magnesium alloy material, used by the U.S. military and used by NASA in space flight mission in 1985. According to Alex Bochannek, the curator of the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California, Moggridge was inspired to make the Grid Compass because he realized that the flat panel display, keyboard, and circuits can be made not collide. “In terms of industrial design, Moggridge has an important role. He came up with a new design” said Bochannek, as quoted by The Guardian. Until now, the Grid Compass still stored in the Computer History Museum, Mountain View, California. It looks like a sewing machine, it has a great grip and weighs more than 9 pounds.
