Scientists Create Tool to Increase Download Speed
The team of scientists and engineers at the University of Minnesota created unique microscale optical device. The development aims to increase the speed when downloading files on the internet as well as reducing the burden on internet transmissions. Reported by ScienceDaily, Wednesday (10/03/2012), this device uses the force generated through the light to push the switch on or off mechanically by very high speed. The development could provide advances in computing and signal processing using light instead of electricity use. This technology also provides higher performance and low energy consumption. The results are published in the October 2, 2012 in the online journal Nature Communications. “This device is similar to the electromechanical relay, but operates entirely with light,” said Mo Li, assistant professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Minnesota. The study was based on previous findings by Li and colleagues in 2008, where they found nanoscale light that can be used to produce strong optical. In the new device, the researchers found that light technology has the power, in which the mechanical properties of the device can be completely dominated by the optical effect, rather than the mechanical structure itself. The effect is amplified to control additional colored light signals, at higher power levels. “This is the first time that the effects of optomechanical used to amplify optical signals without converting it into electricity,” said Li.Read More on http://www.technonewspaper.com Related Posts Scientists Create Robot Explorer Clothes
