President’s Message 24 July 2019

“W

e have entered the very busy time of our show and event calendar and it was a pleasure to see the grounds looking superb for the big CACIB/API weekend of shows that featured Qld’s first FCI Show. Thanks to all concerned for ensuring the weekend was hugely successful. A particular thank you to our grounds men and other DQ employees for their work not only in the lead up to our recent show weekend but also for being there during the events and being so helpful. It is much appreciated. At Monday’s Board meeting there was a half yearly review of our budget translating in some adjustments to happen. The revenue shortfall is highlighted in the following 4 areas• The projected income from DNA testing has been around 30 per cent lower than projected; • External event bookings at Durack have been disappointing suggesting a new approach is warranted; • Approximately $41k of memberships have not been renewed. • A reduction in the number of show entries and shows having a negative impact on revenue. On the upside, expenditure to date has been $41k less than budgeted. At this stage it is projected that DQ will maintain the projection of ending the year with a net surplus of around $150k. I can understand that the tumultuous events of last year caused a number of members not to renew. But we are tracking on well again so please encourage those in your circle to renew and come back on board. “There is a good vibe happening in our dog world”

Due to a number of pressing commitments Mrs Helen Weil has resigned from the Conformation Judges Committee. Mrs Weil has made a substantive contribution to this committee for more than 12 years and I would like to take this opportunity to thank her and wish her all the best in her other endeavours. A bouquet to the Junior Kennel Club for their new Monday night initiative of providing a session of junior handler training followed by handler training for adults. We are also looking to provide a relaxed morning of information sessions in the club house at Durack with a cuppa followed by some practical demonstrations for new exhibitors on a quarterly basis. And finally, I am looking to coordinate a small working group to work on media initiatives to raise our Dogs Queensland profile in the wider community. I already have a few people in mind but if you have a journalism background and excellent writing skills please get in touch with me. We are continuing to have some bad behavior ringside. A reminder that all members are subject to our Code of Ethics and reported breaches can result in disciplinary action. Under clause 22, as members we are required to conduct ourselves politely and with integrity at our events. So let’s be kind to each other and remember that this is our hobby and the idea is that we all enjoy ourselves with our wonderful dogs. “ Be the kind of person your dog thinks you are”. ENGLISH SPRINGER SPANIEL 8

DOG WORLD August 2019

Joanne Meadows

The English Springer Spaniel is of very ancient origin. Widely believed to have originated in Spain (as the name Spaniel suggests), the sporting spaniel breeds were developed in the British Isles. It is thought that Spaniels may have been introduced to Britain by the Roman legions. As early as 300AD there are references to “Spaniels”, being dogs used to flush game for the net, hawk or falcon. In the 1500’s the word “Springer” appeared – referring to Spaniels that flushed or sprang game. With the invention of firearms in the 1700’s, “flying shooting” developed, and the Spaniel was very successful at flushing game for this style of hunting. Spaniels were subsequently divided into two groups – the smaller being used to hunt Woodcock and called “Cockers” and the larger used to flush or spring game and called “Springers”. Until early this century the two varieties were interbred, and the progeny identified depending on their size! The English Kennel Club recognised English Springers as a separate breed in 1902. In 1910 the American Kennel Club registered the first English Springer

Spaniel in that country. By the 1930’s Springers were being shown and bred in Australia, and have become a popular family pet and working dog. The modern Springer is a very versatile dog. The breed excels in conformation showing, field work, obedience, agility, endurance, lure coursing and even sled dog racing. Most importantly, the soft, fun-loving nature of the English Springer has ensured the breed’s reputation as an ideal pet and family member. The typical Springer is polite, friendly, eager to please, quick to learn and willing to obey. The breed has great stamina and needs moderate amounts of activity and exercise, although most will adapt readily to a typical suburban back yard if regular exercise is provided. The English Springer is a very sociable breed that enjoys the company of children and handles the company of other pets very well. They love long walks, games of fetch and being a part of the family. Springer crave the company of humans and can be miserable if neglected. They want to be part of the family and part of everything their family does. However, owners should remember that they LOVE water and will enjoy it whenever they can! Springers love to get wet and dirty…

The English Springer Spaniel has a typical lifespan of 12 to 15 years. They are a relatively healthy breed, but prospective owners should be aware that hip dysplasia and an eye disease Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA Cord 1) are two diseases which breeders monitor. Reputable breeders will have hip x-rayed and scored their breeding stock, and will have tested for PRA. If in doubt, ask your breeder for copies of health certificates and most will be happy to oblige. A genetic efficiency Phosphofructokinase deficiency (PFK) occurs very rarely in Australia, and breeders will also have tested for this. English Springer Spaniels LOVE their food, and some tend to gain weight, so owners need to monitor food intake and ensure their Springer is kept at a healthy weight. The English Springer comes in four colours – Liver & White, Black & White or either of these colours with tan markings that can be above the eyes, on the muzzle, inside the ears, under the tail and on all four legs. Some are very “ticked” with small spots on all four legs and on their muzzle, some have no “ticking” at all. All markings are correct, and the variance adds to the charm of the breed. The dark soulful eyes of a Springer are a mirror into their soul, and their calm loving expression is adored by their owners worldwide.

The Springer Spaniel is used all over the world in various services. They excel as a sniffer dog in Search & Rescue, in prisons and in drug detection. They are even used to hunt truffles! Australian Trainer Steve Austin has trained them in very wide ranging fields – from finding truffles to detecting oil leaks on rigs, finding wild cats in national parks and even detecting Cheetah scat in Africa! In Iraq, Springers were used to search out explosives. Springers are even used as cadaver dogs after natural disasters. It’s fair to say that they have an amazing scenting ability! A medium sized perfect family dog, the English Springer is suitable for active owners, those with children and those families who want an intelligent, loving dog to be part of their family activities. The English Springer Spaniel Association of Queensland is a very active club that has annual events and is willing to help any new owners. www.essaq.homestead.com

Paige O’Neill

Springers DO shed coat… prospective owners should be aware of this and not mind a little dog hair on the couch! They are a breed that needs moderate but regular grooming to keep them looking their best. The size of the Springer is approximately 20” at the shoulders, but males can be a little more and females a little less in size. Weight is approximately 20-22kg.

ADVANCE™

Two years ago, Dogs Queensland Directors teamed up with long established Waterloo Bay Kennel Club in a joint venture to establish Queensland’s largest and most prestigious show circuit. The API shows were born and our 2nd year has been a resounding success! We are very grateful to the major sponsors – Mars Petcare ADVANCE™, Moorholme Pet Transport, Marellen Show Ribbons and Show Manager. They ensure we can stage a world class event in Brisbane. 2019’s API show circuit saw Dogs from five States in Australia competing, a trophy table over $30,000 in value and a festive atmosphere at Durack for the entire weekend! Everyone from the grounds team to the CEO were involved in ensuring the Durack grounds were looking their best for the weekend, and the weather was perfect. Rion and the grounds team really showcased our wonderful grounds for this big weekend. General Manager Rob Harrison was involved in every late night meeting, in the purchasing of themed trophies for each show, and in designing the incredible event photo backdrop. The shows were co-chaired by Director Ainslie Carius and WBKC President Kaye McGhie, and these two could be seen working hard all over the grounds all weekend. Director Duncan McAllister could be seen lugging trophies, Director Bill Smith was cooking in the canteen, Director David Weil was Show Manager, Director Jeremy Cook had the new printing system for CCs running at full speed, and the Committee were serving champagne to spectators at the General Specials ring. A great team effort.

12

DOG WORLD August 2019

The highlight of API 2019 was Queensland’s first FCI CACIB show. A challenge under a new system for the team of Show Managers, Stewards and Writers – plus the exhibitors!! We acknowledge it was not without a few teething problems, but thankfully we had ANKC Vice-President Brian Parker on hand to brief workers and ensure everything was run correctly. Many dogs received their first CACIB towards their international title and were graded Excellent by the panel of international judges. API was a great learning for Dogs QLD as we move forward with CACIB shows. Junior Handlers are the future of our dog world, and we thank Moorholme Pet Transport for their very generous sponsorship of the Junior Handlers competition on the Saturday which was hotly contested! The winners received considerable cash prizes plus an amazing rosette created by Marellen Show Ribbons. Overall winner was Tiarne Tattersall from New South Wales. A feature of API is the API Classic – a pointscore recognising dogs who consistently perform in their groups over the circuit. Judged prior to BIS on the final day, the winners of each Group receive a rosette and $100 cash. The overall winner receives $300 plus an enormous rosette! 2019 API Classic winner was a Samoyed from Victoria, and interstate competing dogs featured strongly in the final line-up. Dogs Queensland are delighted with the success of API for 2019, and we are heartened by so much positive feedback from members. Thank you everyone! We welcome any suggestions to help us make this weekend bigger and better in 2020.

Leak detection dogs sniff out underground leaks

By Sarah Owens, Senior Communications Advisor – Media, Queensland Urban Utilities

In a Queensland first, two four-legged furry recruits are being used by Queensland Urban Utilities to sniff out hidden underground water leaks. English springer spaniels Halo and Danny have spent the past nine months working in the field, uncovering 12 leaks that could have gone undetected for weeks, months or even years. DOG WORLD August 2019

27

Queensland Urban Utilities is one of the largest water distributor-retailers in Australia, supplying drinking water, recycled water and sewerage services to 1.4 million people in South East Queensland. Our 14,384km2 geographic area is made up of five local government regions; Brisbane, Ipswich, Scenic Rim, Lockyer Valley and Somerset. We supply around 128,000 mega litres of water to our customers each year – enough to fill more than 51,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools. We also maintain nearly 19,000km of water and sewer mains, which if laid end to end would stretch from Brisbane to London. Like all water utilities around the world, water pipe bursts and leaks are an issue we proactively manage and we’re constantly investing in technology that improves how we monitor and control our network. For years, sniffer dogs have been used to detect anything from narcotics to explosives. Now, for the first time in Queensland, Halo and Danny are sniffing out chlorinated water – one of the hardest odours for a dog to detect.

The duo were trained by the best in the business and underwent two phases to their eight months of training. They spent six months in Sydney with leading Australian dog trainer Steve Austin, who taught the dogs how to detect the scent of chlorinated water underground. Steve has been training dogs for over 30 years in a range of situations including drugs and bomb detection. Once they were up to scratch, they moved into the care of handler Dennis Gannaway at his Mount Crosby property in outer west Brisbane. Here, Danny and Halo learnt to work as a team with Dennis and practiced their new skill in the “real world” with elements such as weather and cars. In October last year, the duo graduated from their rigorous training and began a nine month trial in the Queensland Urban Utilities service region. They’ve since been hard at work and their super sensitive noses have proven to be an invaluable asset. Sniffing out 12 hidden leaks; they aced their trial with pawfect results!

They’re the latest weapons in our arsenal against hidden underground leaks, and they work alongside leak detection technology such as listening devices and sensors.

Danny and Halo are working-line springer spaniels, who love to hunt. They can run up to 20 kilometres a day and are particularly effective in dense bushland areas, where it can be difficult for our crews to access.

The pair have been trained to detect chlorinated water from a pipe under the ground. To do this, they have learnt to ignore everything else from rainwater to bore water and even chlorinated water above the ground (like water from a hose), so they’ve certainly got their work cut out for them!

They sniff out the chlorine scent in the air, and then find the specific point on the ground where the scent is the strongest. The dogs are trained to drop their noses into the ground when they find the leak and then are rewarded with a game of catch. When in the field, the dogs wear GPS trackers so their movements can be tracked. A report is then compiled by the handler, noting where the dogs detected a potential underground leak. This report is given to our field crews, who use it to investigate and subsequently repair any leaks. They’re now “on the books” – making them the most anticipated recruits in the history of Queensland Urban Utilities and will continue to sniff their way around South East Queensland.

DANCES WITH DOGS – 10TH YEAR CELEBRATION It has been ten years since the introduction of the discipline of Dances With Dogs and the last weekend in June saw the DANCES WITH DOGS NATIONAL and STATE COMPETITIONS conducted at Durack. There were 71 competitors over the two days with handlers from as far south as Sydney. While the weather on Saturday saw a few showers it did not cause any interference for the competitors. Sunday was a glorious day for handlers, dogs and spectators. We were particularly lucky to have a lovely grassed and shady site for our ring with large DQ gazebos keeping our judges and stewards comfortable. The event was made even more special by the many contributions of our sponsors (many of whom have been active in the sport since before its introduction) with the two major sponsors being Plush Puppy and StayLoyal. The judging panels consisted of our own Queensland judges Mrs Barbara Murfet, Mr Lionel Blumel and Mrs Wendy Russell. It was particularly exciting to have the inclusion of Mrs Margaret Bourn from South Australia. The special design of Dances With Dogs rules ensure that all breeds of dogs and all types of handlers are able to compete. There were dogs from a Dachshund, and a Chihuahua cross up to the White Swiss Shepherd. Of course, there were the wonderful Border Collies but also some rarer breeds like the Samoyed, Welsh Springer Spaniel and the Portuguese Water Dog. There were also several handlers who competed with multiple dogs in multiple classes. No mean feat to remember up to 5 routines.

30

DOG WORLD August 2019

There were 4 levels in each competition and some wonderful scores were attained. A big congratulation to Sharon Clark whose Border Collie ‘Holly’ won the Mutley Awards for Highest Score in Freestyle and Heelwork to Music in the National and Heelwork to Music in the State. Newcomer to the sport Border Collie ‘Spook’, handled by Maree Rablin, took out the Mutley Award for Freestyle in the State.

Why does my dog Royal Canin

? g n i h c t a r keep sc

If your dog has started itching and scratching more than normal, it might be down to one of these common issues.

dog’s skin from becoming aggravated by vacuuming regularly and providing your dog with an anti-mite mattress or bed.

Your dog is adept at looking after itself, which includes itching or scratching occasionally to get rid of insects and other irritants. But if you’ve noticed your dog consistently scratching over a number of days, or can seen that their skin is inflamed, it could indicate something is wrong.

However, your dog may be scratching for another, more complex reason: allergies.

Your dog and allergies

Scratching due to insects and fleas on your dog

Some dogs have a genetic predisposition to allergic reactions of their skin, called ‘atopic dermatitis’. It affects a significant number of the canine population in some countries, and some breeds – such as the French Bulldog, German Shepherd or Labrador Retriever – are more at risk than others.

One of the most common causes of constant itching is a parasite attaching itself to your dog. These include fleas, lice and other insects or acari, all of which can cause your dog irritation. Flea treatment should be a regular part of the routine with your dog to reduce the risk of infestation. For dust mites and other external parasites present in your home, you can keep your

Atopic dermatitis occurs because your dog’s immune system is over-responding to a normal environmental or dietary element, reacting excessively which leads to vigorous itching as your dog tries to alleviate its discomfort. This behaviour can then lead to problems with their skin as it becomes broken or ulcered, and makes your dog more prone to other infections.

What sort of things are dogs allergic to? There are a number of things dogs may be commonly allergic to. These include environmental factors, like feathers, moulds or mites, some of which are seasonal – such as grass or tree pollen. They also include particular foods, like certain dairy products, beef, chicken, egg, soy or some cereals. Allergic reactions happen when your dog has been sensitised to something early on in its life, and from then on has an adverse reaction. By spotting early signs of allergic reactions, you have a better chance to find the best treatment for this lifelong condition.

How will my dog be tested for allergies? It’s important you take your dog to the vet if you suspect it has an allergy to something; your vet will ask a series of questions to find out more about the dog’s symptoms, then conduct different tests to find out what the allergen might be. These could include skin scrape and blood tests, and if the vet suspects there is a dietary allergy you’ll be asked to put your dog on an eight to 12 week exclusion diet.

This enables the vet to identify what specific food is triggering your dog’s allergic reaction by feeding it a brand new food source, then reintroducing the old food sources one at a time and monitoring the result.

Looking after your dog’s skin There are some simple ways to look after your dog’s skin which will help alleviate any allergic reactions plus make sure it’s as healthy as possible. Washing your dog regularly with a specialist shampoo helps keep them clean and can soothe their skin, offering immediate relief. Topical treatments like gels and creams are also available for medical care. You can also support your dog by giving a food rich in nutrients which are known to support their skin’s health. This includes omega 3 and omega 6 essential fatty acids, which play a role in helping maintain a healthy skin barrier, antioxidants, and aloe vera which is considered as a useful addition to the management of some skin conditions. It’s important to consult your vet if your dog has been itching or scratching for several days, and you can also speak to your vet at any time to find out more about caring for your dog’s skin. QUEENSLAND TO CONTINUE TO LEAD THE WAY WITH DNA TESTING

Australian National Kennel Council Ltd PRESS RELEASE RESCISSION OF PARENTAGE PROVEN FOR PARENTAGE The Board of Directors at their meeting held in Melbourne on 22 June, 2019 resolved effective immediately to rescind the decision to implement compulsory DNA parentage testing on 1 January 2020. As a result of this decision Clause 6.13 has been removed from ANKC Regulations Part 6 – The Register & Registration.

Tracey Barry Administrator 16 July 2019

Dear Members, Reference is made to the attached ANKC Ltd Press Release. Dogs Queensland will continue to lead the way with best practice DNA profiling for parentage under the provisions of Rules 19.2 and 22.3 below. Historically, members would be aware of 2 major instances which occurred in other member states where parentage records were falsified and caused subsequent problems in the pedigrees of those particular breeds. Unfortunately this resulted in a number of dogs being removed from the ANKC Register. In the last 12 months Dogs Queensland has identified a significant number of cases where breeders have inadvertently or otherwise recorded the wrong parents on litters and these errors have been rectified with ease due to DNA profiling for parentage. We maintain it is important that our organisation sets itself and its member breeders as a point of difference to those of other organisations such as the MDBA where we can guarantee both the parentage and the bloodlines of the puppies our breeders sell on certified pedigrees. 19.2 A breeder shall make application to register the puppies in a litter on the Main or Limited Registers. (1) Main Register – is open to dogs whelped from a Sire and Dam that are both registered either in the Main Register of the ANKC Ltd or other Register or Studbook recognised by the ANKC Ltd and the application is accompanied with a DNA Profile for Parentage – i.e. DNA Profiles of the Sire, the Dam and all puppies. 22.3 Applications for the Registration of dogs in any Register must conform to the following conditions: (1) They must be made on forms provided and supplied for that purpose by the CCCQ Ltd; (2) Forms must be completed and signed by the breeder and any other particulars required by the form must be supplied; (3) All partners in the ownership of the dog are required to sign such documents in person; 25 (4) Applications are to specify the Register on which each dog is to be placed; (5) Applications for matings from 01/01/2018, to be registered on the Main Register, must be accompanied with a DNA Profile for Parentage – i.e. DNA Profiles of the Sire, the Dam and all puppies.

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD 2019 Image: Gerd Altmann – Pixabay

IN RECOGNITION OF THE ENORMOUS WORK PERFORMED BY OUR TIRELESS VOLUNTEERS………. You may know someone who goes out of their way, is always there to assist and never complains. These are the willing and tireless workers, the consistent group of people who just simply “make things work’.

Dogs Queensland announces the third Volunteer of the Year award. Each year, Dogs Queensland will ask our members to nominate a member who has gone above and beyond to assist Clubs, Dogs Queensland and other members in their endeavour to help our organisation develop and grow. We recognise that our network of members (who are all volunteers) often give of their time, labour and sometimes their own money to the benefit of other members and it’s long overdue that proper recognition is awarded for those efforts.

Well, now it’s time to recognise these amazing people. To nominate someone you feel is deserving of this third annual award, simply tell us in 250 words or less why you believe they should be awarded the title of Volunteer of the Year 2019. To nominate a volunteer who has gone above and beyond during the year, click the following link and complete the nomination form. http://www.dogsqueensland.org.au/media/52691/ nomination-rules-for-volunteer-of-the-year-award-2019.pdf
