hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday
We are now well and truly back into the swing of things with events taking place primarily in the South East corner. It won’t be too long before our members in other parts of the state will be
I’d like to touch on one subject which has been causing some concern amongst members. The subject is of photography and videoing at
We are fortunate to have a number of “professional” photographers who make themselves available to capture memories for us
The concerns expressed relate to those not officially appointed, photographing or videoing dogs and their handlers other than their own
Everyone is entitled to show their dogs without feeling intimidated by the thought of somebody taking photographs of them (which may be less than flattering) and posting them all over social media, or never seeing the resulting photos or video being published/distributed or having any knowledge of why they were taken! This is particularly the case where junior handlers are involved and there are specific laws relating to
this. There is no place for this regardless of the guise under which the photograph and/or video was taken.
Nobody should be taking photos OR video of another exhibitor’s dogs without consent. So please by all means, enjoy helping your friends but if you’re not a friend of an exhibitor, please refrain from using your phone or camera in their direction so that everyone can enjoy their day.
Livestreams that are shared directly on social media have not necessarily given rise to the same concerns.
There are also concerns regarding respect for official photographers. These have been engaged by the organisers of the show and they are working in a professional capacity. Please respect the professional photographers and don’t interfere with them by photographing “over their shoulders” or use their podium or equipment.
Our Constitution and Rules Committee are currently working on an update to the 'photography policy' to address these and other concerns.

Recent discussions regarding members contacting Dogs Australia directly, have highlighted the fact that some members may not be aware of the history and Constitution of ANKC Ltd. An explanation of its relationship with the State and Territory Member Bodies can be found in the “About Us” section on the Dogs Australia website and in the Constitution. We hope the following extracts from them will help members understand why any matters concerning Dogs Australia must be referred to their Member Body.
When the original Constitution was drafted in 1958, a vital resolution was, “That the Australian National Kennel Council be constituted so that it is empowered to act only as a co-ordinating and recommendatory body”. Over the succeeding years the Australian National Kennel Council gradually moved in character from an “advisory” towards a “co-ordinating” body, many changes were made to rules and procedures. In 1982 a new Constitution was adopted which designated ANKC as a Co-ordinating Body. This change of Constitution enabled many decisions to be made which would previously have been rejected. It also led to wide discussion on various issues and areas where ANKC might take control or take over the improvement of certain activities.
The following extract from our Mission Statement reinforces that position:
“To act as spokesperson on all canine related activities on a national basis on behalf of State Member Bodies and to pledge assistance and support to the respective State Member Bodies”.
There are 33 Objects listed in the Constitution; the following illustrate the ANKC role as a Co-ordinating Body
d) To act as a federal organisation representing the interests of its Member Bodies in each of the States and Territories of the Commonwealth of Australia.
f) To promote uniformity in regard to laws and regulations affecting Dog owners and breeders throughout the Commonwealth of Australia.
g) To enable its Member Bodies to take co-operative action on matters which are of common interest and are for their mutual benefit in the promotion of canine affairs.
A very important item in the Constitution is Clause 4. Interference with Powers
This is a long clause but it is very instructive and recommended reading.

Whether you’re looking for a playful family pet, a loyal companion, or even a dog to excel in agility or therapy work, the Havanese offers the perfect blend of beauty, brains, and companionship.
– Grahame Neave
The Havanese, a member of the Bichon family, is a small, sturdy dog with a lively, affectionate personality and an irresistibly charming appearance. Known as the national dog of Cuba, this breed has captured the hearts of dog lovers worldwide with its expressive eyes, soft coat, and friendly demeanor. From its rich history to its unique temperament, this delightful breed is such a popular choice for families, singles, and seniors alike.
The Havanese is a breed with a long and fascinating history. Its roots trace back to the Bichon-type dogs that travelled with Spanish traders to Cuba in the early 1500s. These small dogs, beloved for their companionship, began to adapt to the island’s climate and lifestyle, giving rise to what we now know as the Havanese.
Originally, these dogs were owned by the aristocracy and wealthy Cuban families, often being seen as a status symbol. The breed thrived in Cuba for centuries, evolving into the gentle, affectionate companion we know today. When Fidel Castro came to power in the late 1950s, many wealthy Cubans fled the country, bringing their beloved Havanese dogs with them. The breed found its way to the United States, where it gained popularity and was eventually recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1996.
Despite its relatively small numbers in the past, the Havanese has experienced a surge in popularity, becoming a beloved breed across North America, Europe, and beyond.
One of the standout features of the Havanese is its endearing temperament. This breed is known for being incredibly friendly, playful, and affectionate, making it an ideal companion for a variety of lifestyles. Havanese dogs are often described as “velcro dogs” because they thrive on human companionship and form strong bonds with their families. They love to be where their humans are and will follow you from room to room, always eager to participate in whatever activity is happening.
The Havanese is also highly intelligent and eager to please, making them relatively easy to train. They respond well to positive reinforcement techniques, such as treats and praise, and enjoy learning new tricks and commands. Their friendly nature extends to children, other pets, and even strangers, making them an excellent choice for families with kids or multi-pet households.
While they are playful and energetic, Havanese dogs are not overly demanding in terms of exercise. A short walk each day, along with some playtime indoors and outdoors, is usually enough to keep them happy and healthy. However, they do require mental stimulation, so puzzle toys and interactive games can help prevent boredom.
Despite their sociable nature, Havanese dogs can sometimes develop separation anxiety if left alone for long periods. They are happiest when they can be close to their human companions, so they are best suited for households where someone is home most of the time or where they can accompany their owners on outings.
The Havanese is a small but sturdy dog, typically weighing between 5 to 6 kg and standing anywhere between 8.5 to 11.5 inches at the shoulder. Despite their compact size, they have a robust, wellproportioned build that gives them a surprising amount of stamina and agility for a toy breed.
One of the most distinctive features of the Havanese is its luxurious coat. The coat is long, silky, and soft to the touch, with a texture that can be flat or wavy (preferably wavy). While their coat is beautiful, it does require regular grooming to prevent mats and tangles, especially if kept long. Many Havanese owners opt for a shorter “puppy cut,” which is easier to maintain, but still retains the breed’s characteristic charm.
The Havanese comes in a wide variety of colours and colour combinations, making each dog unique in appearance often with markings that enhance their individual appearance. Their expressive eyes, framed by their soft coat, give them a perpetually inquisitive and friendly expression that only adds to their appeal.
The Havanese is an incredibly adaptable breed,
making them well-suited for a wide range of living situations. Whether you live in a small apartment or a large house, the Havanese can thrive as long as they receive enough attention, love, and mental stimulation.
Families with children will find the Havanese to be a wonderful addition to their household. Their gentle nature and patience make them a great playmate for kids, and their small size means they are less likely to accidentally knock over or overpower a child. However, as with any dog/ puppy, it’s important to teach children how to handle dogs gently, as the Havanese, like all small breeds, can be more delicate than larger dogs.
Singles, couples, and seniors will also find the Havanese to be an ideal companion. They are content to cuddle on the couch, go for leisurely walks, or simply follow their owners around the house. For retirees or those who work from home, the Havanese can provide constant companionship without being overly demanding.
Because of their small size and moderate exercise needs, the Havanese is well-suited to apartment living. They don’t require a large yard, but they do enjoy short walks and playtime. Their adaptable
nature means they can adjust to various lifestyles, making them one of the most versatile dog breeds.
Though the Havanese is primarily known as a companion dog, they also excel in a variety of activities. Their intelligence, agility, and willingness to please make them a great candidate for dog sports and other challenges.
1. Obedience Training: Due to their eagerness to learn and please, Havanese dogs tend to do well in obedience training. They enjoy the mental stimulation that comes with learning new commands and tricks, making them a favourite in obedience competitions.
2. Agility: Despite their small size, the Havanese is quite agile and can excel in agility courses. Their nimble bodies and quick reflexes allow them to navigate through tunnels, jump over hurdles, and weave through poles with ease. Agility training is also a great way for them to burn off energy and bond with their owners.
3. Therapy Work: With their gentle, affectionate temperament, Havanese dogs are often
used as therapy dogs. Their calm demeanor and friendly nature make them excellent companions for those in hospitals, nursing homes, or therapy settings, where their presence can provide comfort and emotional support.
4. Trick Training: Havanese dogs are quick learners and love to show off their skills. Many Havanese owners find joy in teaching their dogs fun tricks, from rolling over to dancing on their hind legs. Their natural curiosity and intelligence make them eager to learn new behaviours, which can be a fun way to engage with them.
Like all breeds, the Havanese can be prone to certain health conditions, although they are generally considered an extremely healthy and long-lived breed. Havanese dogs typically live between 14 to 16 years, and with proper care, many live well beyond that range.
Some of the most common health tests that most responsible breeders undertake in their Havanese dogs include:
Hip Dysplasia: This is a condition where the hip
joint doesn’t fit into the socket properly, leading to pain and arthritis. While more common in larger breeds, small dogs can also be affected.
Patellar Luxation: This is a condition where the kneecap slips out of place, which can cause discomfort or difficulty walking. It is a common issue in small dogs, but it can often be managed with veterinary care.
Eye Conditions: Havanese dogs are prone to a few different eye problems, including cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), which can lead to blindness. Regular eye check-ups can help detect these issues early.
Heart Disease: Although rare, some Havanese may be predisposed to heart conditions, such as mitral valve disease. Routine veterinary visits can help monitor for early signs and manage the condition.
Allergies and Skin Issues: Some Havanese may suffer from allergies that manifest as skin irritation, itching, or ear infections. Regular grooming and attention to their diet can help manage these issues.
Deafness: While not common, some Havanese may be born with hearing impairments. Responsible breeders test for this condition to ensure it is not passed down to offspring.
To keep a Havanese healthy, it’s essential to maintain regular veterinary visits, provide a balanced diet, and ensure they get adequate exercise. Regular grooming, including brushing their coat and cleaning their ears, will also help prevent common skin and ear problems.
In conclusion, the Havanese is a charming, affectionate, and intelligent breed that has captured the hearts of dog lovers around the world. With its rich history, endearing personality, and adaptable nature, it’s no wonder this breed has become a popular choice for families, singles, and seniors alike.
Whether you’re looking for a playful family pet, a loyal companion, or even a dog to excel in agility or therapy work, the Havanese offers the perfect blend of beauty, brains, and companionship. With proper care, attention, and love, a Havanese can bring joy and warmth to any home for many years.

prevent this from occurring. This should be part of your due diligence with the puppy buyer. If you have any concerns about this, don’t sell to them.
Dogs Queensland has a Limited Register agreement for this purpose which sets out the important terms such as principal place of residence, who is responsible for day to day expenses eg. food and veterinary expenses. It is important to utilise this agreement as this addresses some of the most common areas which often give rise to dispute. A Partnership Agreement ir required to be registered with Dogs Queensland for evidentiary purposes.
“The Buyer hereby understands and agrees that the specified puppy will be desexed within [insert period] of purchase. Evidence of desexing documentation from the Veterinarian will be provided within [insert time period] of request.”
The reality is that such clauses are almost impossible to enforce. Some breeders offer incentives for compliance. However, once the puppy leaves your possession, you have no control over whether or not the buyer will comply.
It is therefore important to educate the puppy buyer that breeding is complex and involves considerable risks, why desexing is recommended/required and what age is considered appropriate for desexing with respect to that particular breed.
For the purpose of Australian Consumer Law, dogs are treated as property or chattels (no different to any other article for sale). Therefore, the transaction constitutes a sale of goods.
You cannot contract out of Australian Consumer Law. Any attempt to do so will be null and void. However, there are steps you can take to assist in protecting yourself. One way is to specify that the purchaser should organise their own vet check within say 48-72 hours. If the veterinary check identifies health issues (evidence of veterinary report required), the Buyer can then elect to keep the puppy assuming responsibility for all future veterinary expenses or return the puppy for a full refund. Although there is also the option of offering a replacement puppy, this is not necessarily a good idea and is not recommended.
You are required to disclose any health issues prior to or at the time of sale.
This needs to be documented in some way preferably in the contract itself or in the associated documentation (eg. attach vet report as an annexure to the contract) as evidence of disclosure.
If the price has been discounted to allow for a health issue and potential future veterinary expenses, then it is better to have documented this – if not in the contract –at least in some form.
To some extent at least, this will provide a degree of protection from subsequent claims. Although it is not
possible to entirely prevent such claims, this will at least minmise the risk.
You can only verify that the puppy is healthy at the time it leaves your care. A record of veterinary inspection will assist in establishing evidence of this.
Once the puppy leaves, this is no longer a matter within your control. A guarantee is not required under Queensland law. Generally, avoid providing any health guarantee unless required to do so by law in the relevant jurisdiction.
Some breeders take deposits early. Others prefer to wait until later or not to take a deposit at all.
If you decide to take a deposit, the deposit and amount required should be set out in the contract. Preferably, the contract should be provided to the buyer and signed at the depost stage if not already provided prior to this.
Generally, a deposit should be refundable. If a person changes their mind and does not wish to proceed for whatever reason eg. they realise they made the wrong decision or perhaps due to change of circumstances, clearly it is not going to be the right home. Sometimes

circumstances change and what is the best environment for the puppy is paramount.
If you decide to make a deposit non-refundable or you are going to retain part of the deposit for change of mind or even if you keep a percentage for administrative costs/expenses, this should be set out clearly in writing prior to payment of the deposit and acknowledged by the purchaser in writing. Failure to set this out clearly is likely to result in confusion and often gives rise to dispute.
You may receive a request to pay by instalments? This is generally a bad idea as there are significant risks involved and you are then assuming the risk in the transaction. If you do decide to accept payment terms, it should be specified that property does not pass until payment has been made in full.
From a practical perspective, it is far preferable to insist that payment has been made in full before the puppy is collected.
It is preferable to set out a return policy.
This clause should set out terms and conditions and that this will depend upon the reasons and
circumstances in which the puppy is returned (time elapsed from date of sale of the puppy, whether this is for change of mind or health/behavioural reasons and any potential contributory factors). If for change of mind, the Seller may specify that there will be no refund or only a partial refund of the purchase price and that transport will be at the Buyer’s expense. If there are health or behavioural issues, the Seller may specify that the Buyer may return the puppy and that any payment will be limited to a refund of the purchase price. Evidence may also be required upon request and prior to issue of any refund. The Seller may elect to offer a replacement puppy.
If at some time in the future, the Buyer is unable to keep the puppy, the Buyer agrees to contact the Seller before taking any action so that the Seller can elect to take the puppy back or assist with rehoming. Unfortunately, compliance with this is also unreliable, particularly if a significant time has elapsed from the time of sale.
Insurance is the responsibility of the buyer from the time the puppy leaves. However, a further practical way to protect yourself is to take advantage of one of the insurance options which provide cover to the new owner for a period after the puppy leaves. This is a
good option to consider both to ensure that the puppy receives veterinary attention within the period when it is most vulnerable after leaving your care and in order to protect yourself from potential veterinary claims.
The Agreement will generally be in the form of an agreement or it can be by way of Deed. Most importantly, this should be signed by both parties. In certain cases, it may be prudent to have this witnessed as well.
A contract provides you with a degree of protection. Generally, any contract is better than no agreement at all.
A puppy sale contract may be either relatively simple or complex depending upon the complexity of the arrangements. The clauses referred to above are to assist you with a few of the basic clauses. There may be additional clauses and details together with specific terms and conditions that you wish to include. Seek professional legal advice on the specific terms for your particular circumstances.

– Chair, Dogs Queensland Canine Health Committee
On Saturday, 11 January 2025 the Canine Health Committee hosted a seminar by Dr Xavier Schneider of Queensland Veterinary Specialists on Maximising Breeding Outcomes & Optimising Fertility. Dr Xavier is a wealth of information on reproductive issues and this was well supported by members (whether attended in person and those who viewed the recording after the event). Feedback received from members following the seminar was very positive. The Canine Health Committee go to every effort to provide these educational opportunities for members and to make these as accessible to as many members as possible.
Some of the key points covered in the seminar were as follows:
• Canine Reproduction (inc. the female reproductive cycle)
• Factors affecting fertilility
* Intervention affecting reproductive hormones
* Use of hormones and effects on fertility
* Use of supplements, particularly those with hormonal effects and effects on fertility
• Other environmental issues affecting fertility such as exposure to human medical treatments
• Reproductive issues requiring intervention and which may impact on breeding decisions
• Surgical AI -v- TCI
In summary, success will depend upon planning (knowing what you are dealing with in advance including any limitations and having a potential back up plan), correct timing (utilising the scientific methods now available) and depending on what you have to work with – correct placement (utilising the procedures available).
This seminar was recorded and was made available for members to view after the event. If anyone missed the seminar and would still like to access the recording, the link on Show Manager is as follows: Dr Xavier Schneider

Wondering if your dog may be under or overweight?
Every dog’s ideal weight is different. A body condition score is a tool that you can use in between vet visits to monitor your dog’s weight and help them stay in a healthy range.
What is a body condition score in dogs?
A body condition score (BCS) is a number that acts as a measure of a dog’s body fat, roughly similar to body mass index (BMI) in humans.
There are two versions of the scale. One scale ranges from one to five. The other ranges from one to nine. Some veterinarians, including the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA), use the nine-point scale. Others use the five-point scale, which can also be converted into nine points using halves of each number (1.5, 2.5, etc.).
Veterinarians often use the nine-point scale for small animals, while the five-point scale is more common for large animals.
Why is a dog’s body condition score important?
A body condition score can be a useful tool for assessing whether a dog is at a healthy weight.
“Veterinarians use body condition score as an objective measure of whether or not a pet is at a healthy weight. Body condition scoring tends to be more reliable than weight measurement alone, as dogs of different breeds and body types tend to ‘wear’ their weight differently.”
Dr. Jenna Dockweiler, MS, DVM, DACT, CCRT, CVAT, Veterinary Geneticist at Embark
Here, we’ll use the nine-point scale to explain body condition scoring. According to the WSAVA, (World Small Animal Veterinary Association) there are three categories that a dog’s body condition score could fall into: 1) under ideal, 2) ideal, and 3) over ideal.
The WSAVA considers body condition scores of one to three to be “under ideal” for dogs. If you can easily see or feel your dog’s ribs or bones, it could be a sign that their body condition score is in the “under ideal” range.
Body condition score of 1/9 (or 1/5): Your dog has a body condition score of one if you can see their ribs, spine, pelvic bones, and other bony points from a distance. They have no noticeable body fat and/or an obvious loss of muscle mass. A body condition score of one means the dog is emaciated.
A body condition score of 2/9 or 1.5/5
Body condition score of 2/9 (or 1.5/5): Your dog has a body condition score of two if you can easily see their ribs, spine, and pelvic bones. They have no palpable fat. There may be some evidence of other bony points and minimal loss of muscle mass.
Body condition score of 3/9 (or 2/5): Your dog has a body condition score of three if you can easily feel your dog’s ribs and there is little to no fat covering them. You can see the hints of their lumbar vertebrae and pelvic bones. Your dog has an obvious waist and abdominal tuck, meaning that their abdomen appears tucked behind the rib cage.
“Ideal” body condition scores
An ideal body condition score for dogs is four or five on the nine-point scale, or a three on the fivepoint scale.
A body condition score of 4/9 or 2.5/5
Body condition score of 4/9 (or 2.5/5): Your dog has a body condition score of four if you can easily feel their ribs, with minimal fat covering them. Your dog’s waist is easily visible when you’re looking at them from above. If you’re looking at them from the side, you can see an abdominal tuck.
A body condition score of 5/9 or 3/5
Body condition score of 5/9 (or 3/5): Your dog has a body condition score of five if you can easily feel their ribs without extra fat covering them. You can see your dog’s waist from above, and you can see their abdomen tucked up when looking at them from the side.
A body condition score of four is very similar to, but slightly thinner than, a body condition score of five. Both are considered ideal, so don’t worry if your dog seems to be in between. “You can think of a dog with a body condition score of four as having the physique of an Olympic athlete,” says Dr. Dockweiler.
“Over ideal” body condition scores
The WSAVA considers body condition scores of six to nine to be “over ideal” for dogs, meaning that they have some amount of excess fat.
Body condition score of 6/9 (or 3.5/5): Your dog has a body condition score of six if you can feel their ribs with slight excess fat covering them. When looking at your dog from above, you can see their waist, but it might not be obvious. When looking at them from the side, you can see their abdomen tucked up a bit.
A body condition score of 7/9 or 4/5
Body condition score of 7/9 (or 4/5): Your dog has a body condition score of seven if you can still feel their ribs, but with difficulty. They likely have a heavy layer of fat covering the ribs. You can see fat deposits over the lower part of their spine and the base of their tail. They may not have a visible waistline, and may or may not have an abdominal tuck.
Body condition score of 8/9 (or 4.5/5): Your dog has a body condition score of eight if you can’t feel their ribs, and you notice heavy fat deposits over the lower part of their spine and the base of their tail. You can’t see their waist when looking at your dog from above, or their abdominal tuck when looking at them from the side. You may notice that their belly bulges out from the rest of their body (abdominal distension).
body condition score of 9/9 or 5/5
Body condition score of 9/9 (or 5/5): Your dog has a body condition score of nine if you see large fat deposits in the region between their neck and abdomen, over their spine, and at the base of their tail. You may also see fat deposits on their neck and limbs. You don’t see a waist or abdominal tuck, and their belly bulges out from the rest of their body (called “abdominal distension”).
To measure your dog’s body condition score, follow these steps:
1. First, take a look at your dog from above and note their body shape, bones, and amount of fat on either side. Can you easily see their waist?
2. Next, look at your dog from the side. Do you notice an abdominal tuck? Does their belly cur ve up closer to their hind legs, or does it hang lower to the ground?
3. Gently run your hands along your dog’s back and the sides of their rib cage. Can you feel the ribs easily, or are they covered by a layer of fat?
4. Feel your dog’s hips. Can you feel the points of their hip bones? Do you notice any fat or muscle around them?
Unfortunately, pet obesity is a growing problem in the United States. According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, as of 2018, 55.8% of dogs were classified as clinically overweight or obese by their veterinary healthcare professional.
Obesity can increase a dog’s risk for other health conditions, including:
• Inflammatory conditions
• Skin conditions
• Arthritis and joint pain
• Decreased life span
Knowing your dog’s body condition score can help you monitor their overall health and prevent obesity. If you notice any changes in your dog’s eating habits, including sudden weight gain or weight loss, talk to your veterinarian.
There are several factors that can affect a dog’s body condition score, including:
• Breed
• Diet
• Age
• Spay/neuter status
• Exercise
• Food motivation
Some dogs have a variant in the POMC gene associated with food motivation. This genetic variant, sometimes called the “munchies” gene, is one of the variants for which Embark tests. Dogs with one or two copies of this genetic variant are likely to have bigger appetites than other dogs. They need carefully structured diet plans to avoid obesity.

A body condition score (BCS) is a screening tool used by veterinary professionals to estimate body fat and help identify obesity, malnutrition, and metabolic issues. At the majority of Conformation Shows and Dog Sports events throughout Queensland, Members have the opportunity to have their photo taken by one of our many exceptional canine photographers.
Over the coming issues we'll be showcasing a number of photographers, including their brief bio and work samples. We begin our series with Yvonne Van Der Horst from Spinifex DogShow Photography.
I am a Brisbane-based photographer, with extensive experience in photography – I have merged my passion for photography with my love for dogs. Since 2012, I have specialized in capturing memorable moments at dog shows, highlighting the beauty and dedication within the canine community.
My journey has taken me across Australia as well as internationally, where I have photographed prestigious events in the UK, Germany, and New Zealand. Notable assignments include the Midland Rottweiler Club, the 110th anniversary of the
Klub), The Rottweiler Club Inc (NZ), and various Rottweiler Specialty shows throughout Australia. Additionally, I have covered major canine events such as the Royal Darwin Show and the Brisbane Groomathon.
In 2023, recognizing the need for more comprehensive coverage at each event, I collaborated with Jo-Ellen and Alex under Spinifex DogShow Photography. This partnership has enabled us to deliver more extensive and detailed documentation, celebrating the vibrant dog show community.

The Beagle Club of Queensland’s Christmas Walk at Phillip Park in Southport was a day full of festive fun, rain and enjoyment! Beagle lovers gathered with their furry friends, all decked out in Christmasthemed outfits like reindeer ears, Santa hats, and festive jumpers. The event offered more than just a scenic walk – there were mini markets, a Christmas hamper raffle, and even a Santa Selfie Booth that added to the holiday excitement. The community spirit and love for Beagles were undeniable throughout the day.
The walk itself was the main attraction, with 140 Beagles and their owners making their way through Phillip Park and down to the beach. Despite the rainy weather, the dogs were full of energy, happily trotting along the path and exploring the wet sand and waves. The beach walk was a highlight, with playful pups digging, splashing, and racing along the shore. The sight of so many Beagles enjoying the beach together was a joyful spectacle, making everyone forget about the rain.
Back at the park, the mini markets were bustling with activity. Stalls offered a range of items, from handcrafted dog collars and festive accessories to delicious treats for both dogs and their humans. The markets were a hit, giving everyone the chance to pick up unique Christmas gifts while enjoying the cozy atmosphere under the shelters. The Beagles, curious and friendly as ever, were just as excited to explore the stalls as their owners.
Another big hit was the Santa Selfie Booth, which drew a steady crowd throughout the day. The booth featured a festive setup complete with a Santa chair, Christmas decorations, and plenty of space for dogs and owners to pose together. Beagles of all sizes took their turn posing with Santa, creating adorable and often hilarious photos. For many attendees, these selfies became treasured keepsakes of the day, perfectly capturing the holiday spirit.
As part of the offerings from the Club to its members, the Rainbow Bridge display remembers all the Beagles loved by our members who travelled to the Rainbow Bridge over the past year. Although there were many tears, all those who were there recognised the love that owners have for their Beagles as they celebrated the lives of those Beagles they have lost. The display includes a commemorative mug and keyring, placemat and a special plaque for those Beagles lost in 2024.
To top it all off, the Christmas hamper raffles added a thrilling touch to the festivities. Beautifully arranged hampers filled with goodies for dogs and their owners were up for grabs, and there was palpable excitement as the winning tickets were announced. The lucky winners were overjoyed, with their Beagles eagerly sniffing out the treats in their prizes. Between the raffle, the Santa booth, the markets, and the unforgettable beach walk, the Beagle Club of Queensland’s Christmas Walk was a huge success, leaving everyone excited for next year’s event.

Between Christmas and New Year the cluster of shows now known as “Festive Fiesta” was held at Durack. These are a series of night shows and have become some of the most popular events on our show calendar. The shows are run in partnership with Dog Queensland and the Kennel Association of Queensland.
This year we held 4 championship shows and an open show. The open show is held using the entry from the champ show, which gives our trainee judges the opportunity to judge very good numbers, and being very beneficial to their training.
The event held in December 2024 attracted an excellent entry of exhibits with many dogs
travelling either North or South to compete. Our panel of judges included judges from Victoria and South Australia, many had not previously judged their respective allocated groups in Queensland, as well as local judges. Our judges commented on the great atmosphere around the rings and the quality of exhibits judged. The mix of interstate and Queensland judges seemed to work very well, with many of the Queensland judges selected not having officiated in their group/s for many years.
We look forward to presenting Festive Fiesta 2025 and making it bigger and better than last year. We thank the exhibitors for their support of this great cluster of shows.
Dogs Queensland appreciates the continued support of show photographers in providing images to the Dog World magazine.

On 13 November 2024, Stephanie Yoon and her Golden Retriever “Winnie” Wysiwyg It’s a Brew Tiful Day SWM SWC SWI SWX SWV achieved the final Ultimate Class Qualification required to be awarded their Scent Work Championship title; the first team in Australia to reach this milestone.
To be awarded the title of Scent Work Champion, teams must have achieved their Scent Work Master title in addition to all four Element Titles (44 Qualifications in total), and then achieve their Scent Work Ultimate title – 5 Qualifications under a minimum of three different judges.
And not only did this team achieve their Ultimate title, they did so in spectacular form as the leading edge of a thunderstorm hit mid-search, and Winnie proceeded to search calmly during thunder, driving rain and strong winds tossing containers around.
In addition to achieving their Scent Work Champion title, Stephanie and Winnie are one of only six teams in Australia to have achieved the prestigious ACSW NW3-Elite title.
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
Stephanie fell in love with Golden Retrievers after seeing them at the Brisbane Royal Show, and contacted Wysiwyg to be placed on their waitlist. In May 2020, Winnie was welcomed to their family.
Knowing that she wanted to try various activities with her new family member, and with the full
“ …it has taken a village and we’re very fortunate to have the support from some very wonderful people. The scent work community is incredibly supportive, kind and generous. We have made some lifelong friends along our journey and we’re so incredibly grateful. ”
- Stephanie Yoon
support of their breeder, Stephanie and Winnie tried their hand at Conformation. When it turned out that Winnie didn’t enjoy the show ring, so began the search for an activity they both enjoyed that would enrich Winnie’s life. When a friend recommended Nosework, Stephanie signed them up for a course at Hide’N’Seek training in July 2021 and the rest, as they say, was history.
Winnie clued in on the “box game” almost immediately and loved the opportunity to use her natural hunting and working abilities to such a degree that she often needed to be physically carried out of the training area to rest between searches.
In a wildly successful 2025, Stephanie and Winnie achieved:
• Scent Work Master Title
• Scent Work Ultimate Title
• Scent Work Champion Title
• ACSW NW3 High in Trial
• ACSW NW3 Elite Title
“ I also met some wonderful, supportive people from the very beginning of our journey – which is reflective
of the Scent Work community in general ”
However, when asked about her greatest moments during this journey with Winnie, Stephanie listed their improved relationship, teamwork, training and lightbulb moments such as being able to read and support Winnie during searches, the happiness after a really great search is complete and the satisfaction of surmounting trialling issues such as food distractors after targeted retraining.
Stephanie also noted that competing at Masters, Ultimate and Elite levels has seen an exponential improvement in her teamwork with Winnie and credits her wonderful instructor Becky Thomas from Ultimate K9 with guiding their development.
Although they have achieved the highest level currently available in Australian Scent Work, Stephanie and Winnie have no intention of stopping trialling. Winnie loves the sport to such a degree that Stephanie continues to train and trial at Ultimate, Master and Excellent levels. They are also aiming to trial at ACSW Elite, Elite Select and potentially Summit levels in 2025. Stephanie and Winnie are also looking at seeking out new scent-based sporting disciplines such as Track & Search.
Like any “Goldie” should, Winnie loves her food! She loves the game of Scent Work to such a degree that she can be seen dragging Stephanie into the search area like it is a Weight Pull trial. Winnie also likes to ‘confirm’ that she has found the hide by taking a small taste test!
Winnie’s dislikes include having to wait her turn, and getting back into the car after a search where she will often throw herself on the ground as deadweight in protest.

Opinions and information published in the Dog World magazine are solely those of the individual authors and advertisers and do not necessarily reflect the advice or opinions of Dogs Queensland.
The organisation assumes no responsibility or liability for any statements made, and suggests that individuals make their own enquiries and seek their own specialist and/ or independent veterinary or other advice.
Dogs Queensland has become increasingly aware of Puppy Scam Websites using legitimate Dogs Queensland Registration and Queensland Breeder Identification (BIN) Numbers to sell puppies. Dogs Queensland Registration Numbers are obtained from legitimate websites such as Dogs Queensland or DogzOnline, where they are displayed as required by the Queensland Government.
Please see the Queensland Dog Breeder Fact Sheets for regulations and guidelines for Queensland Dog Breeders.
An example of a typical scam is:
• A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet.
• The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix.
• A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry.
• Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published.
• No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website.
• The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures.
• The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.
As a breeder what can you do to avoid being an unknowing victim of a Puppy Scam:
• Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix.
• Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate.
• Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct inperson contact with you.
• Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details.
• Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.
As a buyer what can you do to avoid being a victim of a Puppy Scam:
• Verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland.
• Ensure communications are made to verified contact details.
• Meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.
• If paying online, use a credit card or PayPal where you have a degree of buyer protection.
• Check website is an established site with a website security certificate.
• Avoid websites without physical address or phone numbers.
• A sk for proof, including ANKC registration papers and veterinary health records for any puppy.
Importantly you should report any suspect sites or advertising to the ACCC ScamWatch website. Please let us know about any suspect websites too by contacting Dogs Queensland on 3252 2661 or by email at info@dogsqueensland.org.au.
enquiries please email: info@dogsqueensland.org.au or call (07) 3252 2661.
