WWelcome to Queensland, Beautiful one day, cyclones, floods, heat and humidity the next!!!!
Mother Nature has certainly thrown us some curveballs over the past months.
I hope our members and their friends and family and animals have come out of these events safely.
I understand how these events can play havoc with our affiliated clubs and the decision making around continuing or postponing or completely cancelling events. So much time, effort, planning and expense goes into shows and trials. Careful consideration has to be given to the decision which is in the best interests of all those involved. It can be very difficult indeed!
Our Constitution and Rules Committee have been working hard to develop an Extreme Weather and Natural Disaster Policy which provides guidelines and

One thing that no policy can ever replace, is your own judgement and common sense when it comes to attending events when these circumstances occur. You are in the best position to determine your own safety and that of your family and dogs. There will always be another dog show or trial, there is only one you, and that should always be a priority!

1. That ANKC Ltd Agility Rules – Clause 9.9 be amended as follows:

RATIONALE:
Recent discussions have focused on the need for signatures on Qualifying Certificates for Dogs Australia recognized performance activities. Inconsistencies exist within the Performance disciplines regarding the requirement for a Judge's Signature.
Given that Conformation activities have long issued certificates without judges' signatures, extending this practice to all Dogs Australia activities seems logical.
With many performance activities already using electronic certificates, as their rules do not require signatures, adopting this approach would ensure consistency across the board.
Importantly, these proposed changes do not prohibit affiliates from issuing certificates with a Judge's Signature, offering flexibility for those transitioning to an electronic format.
Dogs Australia have previously advised that the minutes of the Urgent Special Board meeting of Directors and the National Retrieving & Field Committee were confirmed, the final formatting of the Rules for the conduct of Retrieving Trials for Gundogs has been completed and the updated rules are now available from the DA website at: https://dogsaustralia.org.au/members/ruleregulations/rules/
Please note the endorsed amendments from the July 2024 committee meeting are effective from 1 January 2025, and the new Appendix A on page 21 is effective 1 April 2025.
Dogs Australia have been alerted to an amendment which was omitted in the abovementioned rules which was endorsed at the October 2023 Board meeting when the July 2023 National Retrieving & Field Trial Committee meeting minutes were approved. The omission relates to Rule 44 – Open/All Age – refer below: Currently reads:
44. NOVICE STAKE: One item only cast (max. 40 mtrs or less).
OPEN/ALL AGE: Two items of game picked up. One item of game to be picked up or seek dead (approx. 60m or less)
Options may Include mix of:
• Double mark
• Double rise
• Mark and blind (blind always picked up last)

Airedales ... are perfectly happy to veg out on the couch as much as play, their sparkling eyes, hairy grin, wet kisses and wagging tail are always ready to cheer you.
– Anne Sorraghan
You will never be bored living with an Airedale Terrier! Airedales know that you could not survive without their supervision. (I brought your pillow out to the kitchen in case you needed a rest?) It can even be admitted that they can be like a naughty child that would rather your negative attention, than no attention at all.
You can’t be miserable living with an Airedale. While they are perfectly happy to veg out on the couch as much as play, their sparkling eyes, hairy grin, wet kisses and wagging tail are always ready to cheer you. (Come on!).
You feel safe with an Airedale. Our neighbour came in to complain that she couldn’t even yell at her own naughty kids when they played with mine. The Airedale got in between and wouldn’t allow it!
An Airedale is not inclined to leave you confused about what they think!
Research suggests that the Airedale evolved with the industrial revolution along the Aire and Wharf Valleys in Yorkshire. Enclosure Acts from 1760 to 1820 forced agricultural workers from the land and they became the labourers for the new mills and mines. New woollen mills were built along the rivers.
The labourers were sportsmen of lesser means, who gambled on their little Terriers abilities to hunt and fight along the rivers. One could imagine that these sportsmen, in an effort to increase the size of their Terriers, found the local Otterhound packs a suitable source of strong and sizeable stud dogs. The resulting pups would be able to tackle larger quarry, whether vermin or canine! I wonder if the owner of the purebred Otterhound pack was all that keen in crossing them with the local mongrel Terriers?
The Otterhound Terrier cross proved remarkably successful. One of my old Airedale books proudly claims that the Airedale was responsible for the extinction of the polemart along the Aire Valley!
The evolving breed went by the name of Wharfedale, Waterside and Bingley Terrier. After much dispute the name ‘Airedale Terrier’ was finally settled on and appeared in the Kennel Club
stud Book in 1886.
Breeders of Airedales were Terrier lovers. In appearance the Airedale has bred away from the soft eyes, rounded skulls, droopy ears and splay feet of the Otterhound (who look something like a big hairy Bloodhound) and focussed on sharp Terrier characteristics.
Miss Pat McCaughey judged the 1965 show for the Airedale Terrier Club of Victoria. Her Airedale, English Champion Ch Riverina Tweedsbairn, won BIS at Crufts in the nineteen sixties. The blueprint for the the Airedale Terrier is the ‘breed standard’. In 1965 the Airedale Standard was basically large chunks of the Fox Terrier Wire standard which, like the other Terriers, describes a dog that is able to hunt vermin down burrows, underground.
The Airedale, in contrast, hunted and worked, often swimming, along riverbanks. It was too big to hunt down holes. I asked Miss McCaughey why, for dogs that worked so differently, we used such similar standards? It seemed to me that she gave at me a look that said the answer was obvious ‘‘Well dear, because the same people went to the same meetings of course!’’ Regardless of the job they did,
the breeders WANTED the breed to look like a big Terrier.
While we know over the years Bull Terriers, Fox Terriers and even Gordon Setters have at stages been introduced to the mix, the most important result of early breeding is not the physical appearance but the temperament of the Airedale. The dog required was still full of Terrier enthusiasm, Terrier fun and Terrier determination but also a thinking Terrier that stopped to ‘read’ their owner and assess any situation. Airedales really have shown amazing strength of character and intelligence.
In the early 1900’s Germans explored the intelligence of Airedales with an emphasis on maths. The book ‘Lola; Or, The Thought And Speech Of Animals’, by Henny Kindermann, tells how Lola the Airedale was taken on tour where she tapped out answers to maths questions, in front of large audiences without her trainer-owner in the room! Lola was among a number of Airedales in Germany, where maths was used to explore animal communication and intelligence.
Before the First World War, the British army had
no training programme for sentry, messenger or ambulance dogs. Colonel Richardson and his wife Blanche were dog lovers and trainers whose main affections lay with Airedales.
In 1895 the then Major Richardson, noticed a man buying a British sheepdog and found out that the German Army was purchasing these dogs to train as war dogs. The Richardsons lived close to the Barry Button Army Camp and despite there being no official War Dog program, their dogs were brought to the camp for training. Major Richardson was also able to visit war dog training establishments in France and Germany.
While there was still no official policy to train Army dogs in Britain, a number of Regiments purchased dogs trained by Major Richardson. Early in the First World War, the War Office received many requests for patrol, sentry, messenger and medic dogs and a War Dog Training School was finally established at Shoeburyness with the Major and Blanche in charge. The Airedale’s determined character made them ideal to train and the school was responsible for training more than 2000 dogs that were sent to war. Red Cross Medic dogs, were sent to find the wounded, carrying medical supplies to men stranded on the battlefield. With a large Red Cross
printed on the packs they carried, they could become easy targets. In contrast Messenger dogs were taken to the front to be sent with dispatches, to make their way back to their trainers at base camp. Airedales were much more successful than human messengers at the front, as a smaller, faster target, they were far less likely to get killed while delivering their message. Like the soldiers they worked with, there are horrific stories of badly wounded dogs still getting the message through. Many families gave up both their sons and their Airedale.
The demand for messenger dogs was so great, the War Dog Training school was moved to bigger facilities at Lyndhurst in the New Forest. The training of these dogs continued right up until the 1940’s and World War Two with the Airedales now trained to wear gas masks!
No matter what breed you are considering, my advice is always the same. If the breeder makes an excuse why you can’t pat their dogs, go to someone who doesn’t need to make an excuse! Temperament is everything and temperament is scarily inherited. My dog Tonto would hold your hand in his mouth to lead you anywhere. I’m
walking down the yard and his great grandson Stussy, like the generations in between, gently takes my hand in his mouth and leads me further. Oh Tonto! You can expect your Airedale to live for at least twelve years and you want a dog that is easy to live with, even if you do make training mistakes. We can get up to 80 Airedales off lead at the ‘’Airedale Club Bush Day’’ which tells you how social they can be. Most Airedales will tear round to join in the fun. Some bloodlines are child besotted and would much prefer to sit with the kids. The breeder will know.
While many Airedale breeders in Australia have made a concerted effort to bring in the sweetest temperament bloodlines from overseas, they have also managed to produce some quality show dogs to send. Australian Airedales have become champions in seven countries including Margaret who became the ‘breed record holder’ or top winning Airedale ever, in the USA in 2004. Peter Green who showed her commented that Margaret was the best temperament Airedale he’d ever owned. Margaret liked to throw her ball out of her run to watch the kennel boy pick it up and return it! Top winning Airedales are clever as well as beautiful.
Will it be a boy or girl? The boys grow bigger than the girls. In the nineteen fifties a budding Airedale breeder went to buy an Airedale bitch from an Airedale breeder in Melbourne. All but two of the bitch pups had been drowned at birth because, in those days, the speying of female dogs wasn’t available. You couldn’t simply get homes for bitch pups. If you bought a pup, you bought a male. Think about it. For as long as mankind lived and worked with dogs, the male was the easy choice. If we’ve managed primarily with entire male dogs, for as long as we’ve worked with them, I’m not sure why we need to neuter them now? Don’t be hasty to neuter your Airedale. The latest research suggests that dogs are less likely to get cancers if left entire. Airedale boys are rarely the boss of the breeder’s yard. They stand back and leave the bossing to the girls. If you’re buying a girl don’t rush to remove the female hormones. Lot’s of breeds come in to season at six months of age, so your vet grabs you at the last puppy vaccination to book in to spey your bitch. Airedale bitches rarely come in to season before twelve months of age and often later. Let them grow up. Neutering early can cause the long bones in a dog to grow longer and trigger arthritis.
Little Airedales are born black, with tan points. That’s basically tan on their nose and toes. The tan
extends up the legs and over their heads as they grow. They may also be born with a white blaze on their chests and the tips of their toes. The white on their toes usually disappears with age. By the time the pups are ready to go home you will be able to see how their coats are developing. The smoothest puppy that reminds you of a little Dobermann will still have a whiskery grin when he grows up. These coats are ‘easy care’, the ones that don’t pick up dirt and only need a clip twice a year about March and September. They are great if you live on a property or are near the bush. The slightly softer coats are typical with enough thickness, that if you live in a warm climate your Airedale will need a clip at least three times a year. These coats are fine in the suburbs.
Just occasionally Airedales produce a ‘sheep coat’. It’s a recessive gene. It’s a soft woolly coat that remains thick, soft and paler in colour for the dogs' life. These ultra soft coats are perfect for the allergy sufferer but beware, they do require dedication to maintain them and more trips to the grooming parlour.
We are incredibly lucky that Airedales are a very healthy breed and that any health problems, discovered over the years, have been tackled by
Australian breeders head on.
It’s only in the past few years that breeders here have become aware of a new disease in Airedales. It’s a kidney disease called PLN that can kill. Luckily for us there is a DNA test. Airedales can be rated as ‘clear’, ‘carrier’, or ‘affected’. The disease has slipped through because some Airedale’s that test as ‘affected’ actually live to a happy old age of twelve or fourteen, while others died young. Most Australian breeders are now vigilant in testing their Airedales. When you buy a pup, one parent MUST be tested ‘clear’ for you to be sure that your pup could be no worse than a ‘carrier’.
In the nineteen eighties some imported bloodlines produced epilepsy. Outcrossing breeders eliminated this from our breed. However, new tick treatments can cause fitting, so make sure you read about the side affects before you treat your Airedale.
Airedales used for breeding are usually tested for Hip and Elbow Dysplasia or ‘HD’. HD is caused by a mixture of hereditary and environment. That’s why breeders only breed with Airedales with low HD scores. Hip dysplasia can only be assessed by an expert ‘reading’ an x-ray and even this is not totally reliable. One of my Airedales, Torch, scored 14 when he was x-rayed at twelve months and scored 4 when he was x-rayed by a different vet at
age 4! While the breed average is near 12, a score as high as 25 should give your Airedale no problems. Triggers to HD, in any breed, can be overweight, lots of stairs and hard, slippery surfaces, severe over exercise and regular jumping off and on high places. Grow your Airedale pup slowly with exercise on surfaces like the local park. If your Airedale goes lame, get him to an osteopath first – an expert in soft tissue injury.
Canine teeth are the big pointy teeth that sit at the front corners of the upper and lower jaw. Little Airedales often have crooked lower canine teeth that angle into the roof of the mouth, rather than in front of the upper canines, outside the roof of the mouth. This is called impacted canines. All the baby teeth, including the canines, are going to fall out, so leave them alone. Rarely, an impacted canine appears in adult teeth. It may push a little indentation into the roof of the mouth which will not do any harm and will not get infected. Do not get invited to do unnecessary dental work by your enthusiastic, well-meaning vet.
The blend of Hound and Terrier gives Airedales their unique temperament. When off duty you can expect your Airedale to wait patiently on the kitchen floor, however, Airedales will be delighted to ‘have a go’ if you only ask. They have been
used to herd stock, retrieve, point or set game, as hunting dogs and messenger, sentry or medic dogs at war. They have been used as guide dogs and therapy dogs. Airedales can be natural water dogs so given the opportunity to swim, surf, ski or paddleboard, they’ll be in it!
As fabulous family dogs, I’m sure they count the kids. Some years ago a friend's two year old daughter went missing. It didn’t even register that the fourteen month old Airedale bitch, Sophie, had gone too. Frantic searching and then the police were called…. Phone call to the Mum, ‘We’ve found your daughter but we can’t touch her. The little girl is up against a fence and your Airedale won’t let us near. Can you come and get her?’. The wise policeman waited for mum rather than upset the child or the clever Airedale.
DON'T EVEN THINK OF AN AIREDALE IF YOU DON'T HAVE TIME!

2. “Should a milk replacer be part of my maternity toolkit?”
There are several reasons why milk-replacers may become necessary, either as a ‘top-up’ or as the sole source of nutrition. As you know, some first-time mothers may struggle with their maternal instincts. Alternatively, the bitch may be unwell or unable to produce enough milk, especially if she has a large litter. Toxic milk syndrome occurs when some puppies in a litter develop diarrhoea or colitis, despite the dam showing no clinical signs of mastitis. Studies suggest this may be linked to subclinical mastitis, which can be detected by examining the milk for increased neutrophils¹.
Even if the bitch appears to be managing well, it is crucial to closely monitor the puppies, as inadequate weight gain can often be the first indicator of a problem, suggesting that additional support is needed. We recommend weighing your puppies daily after birth to track their progress. Recent studies show that any puppy losing more than 4% of its birth weight within the first 48 hours has a significantly higher risk of mortality and may benefit from supplemental feeding¹-³.
Other risk factors for neonatal mortality may include:
• A low birth weight and low Apgar score ²,⁴. If you aren’t currently Apgar scoring your pups it is definitely worth looking up how to do this, as it will really help you to identify any potential weaker puppies so you can offer them immediate additional nutritional support.
• Litter heterogeneity (weight difference between biggest and smallest puppies in a litter) - If a significant weight variation is observed within the litter, it should be considered potentially at risk.
• Puppies from large litters. If the litter size is bigger than is typically expected for that breed, the puppies are more likely to be of low birth weight.² Using supplemental milk replacers from birth in this instance can provide nutritional support for these puppies.
“All milk replacers are the same.”
A common misconception is that any milk will suffice for newborn puppies. However, canine milk is unique: it’s more energy-dense, is twice as rich in protein, fat, calcium, and phosphorus compared to other species, all of which contribute to healthy growth. Cow and goat milk, being higher in lactose, may be harder for puppies to digest. Human milk replacers should be avoided as they contain starch, which puppies can’t digest during their first few weeks. Homemade formulas are also risky due to the difficulty in replicating the nutritional balance of canine milk and ensuring sterility.
Lactose (g/Mcal)
Osmolality, the osmotic pressure from dissolved particles, is crucial in milk replacers. If a milk replacer has high osmolality, it can lead to osmotic diarrhoea, a serious condition for newborn puppies who are 84% water⁵. Ensuring the milk replacer has the right osmolality is essential, and formulas designed specifically for puppies are made with this in mind.
While there are many milk replacers available, not all may meet the puppies’ nutritional needs. Some formulas contain beneficial components like DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), prebiotics, and maltodextrin, supporting cognitive development, digestive function, immune health, and overall growth. The bitch’s ability to produce DHA during lactation is limited¹, so supplementing newborn puppies with DHA has been shown to aid in the development of cognitive and ocular functions. Some milk formulas contain prebiotics, like fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), which help promote digestive health and contribute to immune system development by supporting a healthy balance of microbiota.
When using a milk replacer, always remember to check the puppy’s body temperature first. Newborn puppies have a limited ability to regulate their body temperature, and if they are too cold, their digestive system won’t function properly. Ensure that the environment is warm, and if the puppy is cold, gently warm before feeding.
Reconstitution errors are the most common issue when preparing powder-based milk replacers. Follow the manufacturer’s water-to-powder ratio, as more is not always better. Mixing with other milk types, such as goat’s milk, may alter osmolality and cause digestive issues. Don’t forget to stimulate the puppy to urinate and defecate after feeding.
3. “Diarrhoea during weaning is only of viral or bacterial origin.”
Diarrhoea can slow growth rates and increase the risk of mortality⁶, as gastrointestinal issues are a leading cause of death in puppies under one year of age⁷. But diarrhoea during weaning isn’t always caused by viral or bacterial infections. At this stage, puppies are still developing their digestive systems: they lose the ability to digest milk but haven’t fully adapted to digesting starch. Environmental factors such as stress, high temperatures, or excessive humidity, as well as changes in diet, can contribute to diarrhoea during weaning. It’s also important to consider that certain parasites, like coccidia and Giardia, can also be implicated.
At weaning, which typically begins around 4 to 4.5 weeks of age, it’s important to ensure a smooth transition from milk to solid food. If kibble is introduced, it should be rehydrated in the first few weeks to make it easier for puppies to eat and digest. Using a canine milk replacer instead of water during the first week can help ease this process.
During weaning, puppies’ digestive systems are still immature and more fragile than in adults. Therefore we want the diet to be as digestible as possible. Digestive safety is essential for puppies because puppies are very sensitive to dehydration, a common consequence of diarrhoea.
Avoid free feeding during weaning, as this is a recognised risk factor for weaning diarrhoea. Research has shown that feeding puppies four meals per day during weaning improves stool quality by reducing digestive workload⁸.
For steady and healthy growth, BABYDOG MILK is formulated to closely match the bitch’s milk, with high energy and protein levels. Its unique formula dissolves instantly and completely, leaving no sediment and creating a smooth, homogenous mixture. Enriched with DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid, it aids in brain development and helps an immature immune system. It also has the right amount of lactose and prebiotics for optimal digestion.
OUR STARTER MOTHER & BABYDOG range offers tailored nutritional solutions to support puppies during weaning, from 1 to 2 months of age. Enriched with DHA for brain development and learning, it also contains a blend of prebiotics, and highly digestible proteins to promote a healthy intestinal balance. The formula supports a strong immune system with nutrients including Vitamins E and C. Additionally, the STARTER range meets the high energy needs of the bitch during late pregnancy and lactation.

HOOKWORMS
Hookworms are common intestinal parasites that can significantly impact a dog's health. They attach to the lining of the small intestine, feeding on the dog's blood, which can lead to serious health issues.
Recent studies have identified a concerning rise in drug-resistant hookworms among dogs in Australia and New Zealand. Research from the University of Queensland and the University of Sydney indicates widespread resistance to benzimidazolebased dewormers, commonly used to treat gastrointestinal parasites in dogs.
This trend mirrors findings in other regions. In the United States, particularly in the Southeast, Northeast, and California, there has been a notable increase in cases of dogs with suspected or confirmed drug-resistant hookworms. Studies have documented resistance to multiple drug classes, including fenbendazole, febantel, macrocyclic lactones, and pyrantel.
TRANSMISSION:
Dogs can become infected with hookworms through various routes:
• Environmental Exposure: Larvae present in contaminated soil or sand can penetrate the dog's skin or be ingested during grooming.
• Maternal Transmission: Puppies may acquire hookworms while nursing from an infected mother.
SYMPTOMS:
The presence of hookworms can cause a range of symptoms in dogs, including:
• Gastrointestinal Issues: Vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), and general stomach upset.
• Anaemia: Due to blood loss, dogs may exhibit pale gums, weakness, and lethargy.
• Weight Loss: Unexplained weight loss and failure to thrive, especially in puppies.
• Respiratory Signs: Coughing can occur if larvae migrate through the lungs.
• Skin Irritations: Particularly around the paws, due to larval penetration.
DIAGNOSIS:
Diagnosing drug resistance in hookworms involves conducting a faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT). This test compares the number of eggs in a dog's faeces before and after deworming treatment to assess the effectiveness of the medication. A lack of significant reduction in egg count post-treatment may indicate resistance.
Given the increasing prevalence of drug-resistant hookworms, it's essential for dog owners to consult with their veterinarians to determine the most effective treatment and prevention strategies. Regular monitoring and appropriate diagnostic testing are crucial to manage and mitigate the impact of these resistant parasites.
TREATMENT:
Treating hookworm infections in dogs involves administering anthelmintic (deworming) medications that target these parasites. Commonly prescribed drugs include pyrantel pamoate and
fenbendazole, which are effective against adult hookworms. However, these medications may not eliminate immature stages of the parasite, necessitating follow-up treatments. Typically, a second dose is administered two to three weeks after the initial treatment to address any newly matured worms.
In cases where drug-resistant hookworms are suspected, veterinarians may recommend combination therapies. For instance, a regimen combining fenbendazole, pyrantel pamoate, and moxidectin has been suggested to combat resistant strains.
PREVENTION:
Preventive measures include:
• Regular Deworming: Administer veterinarianrecommended deworming treatments as directed.
• Environmental Management: Keep living areas clean and free from fecal contamination to reduce the risk of infection.
• Monitoring: Regular veterinary check-ups and
fecal examinations can help detect and manage infections early.
By adhering to these preventive measures and maintaining regular veterinary care, you can help protect your dog from hookworm infections and ensure their overall health and well-being.
Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a new oral medication, Credelio Quattro, which offers protection against multiple parasites, including hookworms. Active ingredient are lotilaner, moxidectin, praziquantel, and pyrantel. It is yet to be approved for use in Australia.
HOOKWORMS ARE ZOONOTIC
It is also important to be aware that hookworms are a zoonotic pathogen and can infect humans through the skin. Young hookworm larvae can burrow into unprotected skin and cause severe itching and or raised red lines on the skin.
Preventative measures you can do to avoid being infected include:
• Dispose of animal waste quickly to keep eggs from getting into soil and hatching.
• Make sure dogs are dewormed and monitored regularly.
• Wear shoes and avoid skin contact with contaminated sand or soil.

Patrik Berger Photography
My dog show photographic journey started many years ago, probably back in the 80s when I would have photographed my first Afghan Hound Specialties with 35mm film. Since then, it’s been a bit of a stop start venture mainly because it’s really been a merge of two hobbies – dog showing and photographing. I was late to digital, but it has transformed photography making it easier to capture images that would have been very difficult in the film days. Fast digital cameras give you a much greater chance of capturing perfect movement shots and the vast array of images that we now consume daily has also raised everyone’s expectations on what makes a lovely image.
Photography remains a hobby for me – I have no plans on turning it in to anything else. I love
showing our dogs as well and at times a small number of people complain if I do both, so I don’t put myself out there as being available to cover events even though I may be. If I get asked, well and good, but I don’t tend to seek out appointments. I think the fact that I’ve been showing for so many years, having started in the late 70s, gives me a good perspective of both sides of the camera. Without doubt the highlight of my photographic journey was being asked to assist at the 2017 Sydney Royal. A massive 10 days, with 50,000 images to work through over the following few weeks but it was worth it just for the experience. I think I used up 4 weeks of Rec Leave for that event (so much for holidays), but I am forever grateful to have been given that opportunity.
If I’m not photographing an event or showing at an event, then I love to be out capturing photos of the natural world, in particular I enjoy photographing birds and macro images. When the day comes that I’m not able to run around the ring with our Vizslas anymore then I’d more than likely be out with the camera and a long lens, walking National Parks or the various Reserves in south-east Queensland. For now, having a 9 to 5 job, showing and photographing a few events, keeps me busy enough.
I’d like to thank those that encourage me to keep photographing and the exhibitors that appreciate that I continually try my utmost to capture the best of every single dog. You are what makes the effort of sitting behind the computer for hours editing images worthwhile and why I still cover events.

– Elisa McCutcheon: Chair, Dogs Queensland Canine Health Committee
The Canine Health Committee has been very active over the course of the last 2 years.
Over the course of the last year, the Canine Health Committee has hosted a number of seminars/ webinars and workshops on a range of topics including Aromatherapy for Canines, Nutrition, Conducting Breed Health Surveys, Utilisation Of DNA Health Testing as a tool in developing strategies for reducing inherited diseases, a study in hip dysplasia inheritance, Chiari Malformation (CM), Syringomyelia (SM) and Primary Secretory Otitis Media (PSOM), Let’s Talk Hips & Elbows (hip and elbow scoring).
Members of the Committee have also attended other external webinars (including international webinars) on canine health issues, particularly those of significant concern relating to the banning of breeding of certain breeds.
The Canine Health Committee also held a TTouch workshop. TTouch techniques are particularly useful in reducing stress, fear and anxiety, improved behaviour, pain relief, support for aging dogs with mobility and comfort.
The Committee has a number of seminars and workshops planned for the future.
RFG (Respiratory Function Grading)
It was an important priority for our Committee to make the RFG scheme available to our members in Queensland at least partly due to the increasing pressure from external stakeholders both within Australia and overseas to address concerns about brachycephalic breeds. The scheme enables dogs to be assessed prior to breeding. This is an important tool for our breeders and should ultimately lead to improvement in the overall
Elisa McCutcheon
health of breeding stock. This is also useful in assessing whether surgery may be required where there is a concern with respect to any particular dog. Hopefully, these assessments will also assist in avoiding unnecessary surgery.
On 1 September 2023 and 8 April 2024, the Committee conducted training for veterinary practitioners in conducting respiratory function grading (RFG) assessments to assist in rolling out the respiratory function grading scheme in Australia. This was well attended and included veterinary practitioners from around Queensland, other Australian States and Territories, as well as Singapore and the USA. Access to testing is an important issue for members. Without vets trained in Queensland, both in SE Queensland and regional areas, access to testing would either have been non-existent or very limited. It is pleasing to see the RFG testing results on ORCHID, particularly for British Bulldogs and French Bulldogs.
There have also been a number of MRI Clinics. These clinics are conducted at QVS (clearly it is not practical for these to be conducted at Durack) and involve a small number of dogs at a time. Only a few bookings are required to conduct these clinics.
We have also been working on reintroducing a heart and eye clinic for members. While there have been challenges with availability of the specialists over the last year, this has hopefully now been resolved. We do need more people prepared to volunteer to assist in order to make this happen.
The Committee has also been working with James Cook University (JCU) on a number of important
canine health research projects. These have included a prevalence study of canine herpesvirus in breeding dogs and the community, and establishing the prevalence of vector borne pathogens in dogs in North Queensland (Ehrlichia canis, Babesia canis, Babesia vogeli and Dirofilaria immitis (heartworm). Research papers have been prepared and submitted for publication by the JCU research teams with respect to both of these projects. These projects have been funded by Dogs Queensland.
More recently, Professor Stephen Barker at the University of Queensland approached Dogs Queensland to fund a research project to allow the large-scale production of the Australian paralysis tick, Ixodes Holocyclus. The aim of this project is to ensure a continuous supply of femaile paralysis ticks for the production of tick anti-sera. The research proposal was reviewed by the Canine Health Committee and considered sufficiently meritorious to be put forward to the Board for approval. This project has now been approved by the Board and is expected to take approximately 12 months. We look forward to reporting on the outcome of this project in due course.
This will hopefully address the recent shortage of paralysis tick anti-sera in order to avoid future potential disruption to the clinical treatment of dogs for tick paralysis in Queensland as well as in
other States and Territories. The Committee looks forward to working in conjunction with research institutions on further research projects to advance canine health in the future.
Addressing some of the greatest threats to our dogs and breeds has been a priority. Hopefully, we have made significant progress in working towards our goals of the betterment of our breeds and improving the health and wellbeing of all dogs.
It has been a privilege to be Chair of the Canine Health Committee. I would like to thank the members of this Committee for their attendance and dedication to health and to all of those members involved in or associated with the committee who have assisted over the course of the year in the planning, organising and running of these events.
The Proston Show Society recently held a Championship Show at the Proston Showgrounds on Saturday 8 March 2025.
Dogs Queensland congratulates all the winners and Members who took to the show rings to exhibit their dogs over the weekend and would like to extend a ‘thank you’ to all those who made the show a success including workers and volunteers alike.

With the words of Bing Crosby in our ears, we took the irresistible Irish wolfhounds ‘Marching along in the big parade on St Patricks Day!’ and what a wonderful day it was.
This year the Irish Wolfhound Club of Qld joined the St Patricks Day march in the city. Thirteen majestic Wolfhounds made their way through the streets of Brisbane amongst various clubs and groups in the parade with the ever-admiring crowds cheering on. As a club we are always grateful for the opportunity to participate in such a wonderful, cultural event, to showcase and promote this rare and vulnerable breed.
A testament to their calm demeanour, the Irish Wolfhounds took the celebrations and crowds in their stride. Immersed in Irish culture, crowds were treated to a fanfare of bagpipes, brass and drum bands, Irish dancers, choirs, a few sneaky leprechauns and much, much more!
At the conclusion of the parade the club retired to the Port Office Hotel for a pint of Guinness (or 3!). The Port Office outdid themselves reserving the beer garden specifically for this special breed to relax and interact with their admiring fans, and cool down from the heat.
As the festivities wrapped up all ‘Irish eyes were smiling’ but that may have been the Guinness talking!!

– Emily Vourlides (President Sled Dog Racing Qld)
Later this year the American Staffordshire Terrier Club of Queensland will host Queensland’s first ANKC affiliated Sled Dog Racing event at Pechey State Forest, just north of Toowoomba. The event, scheduled to take place on Saturday 16 August 2025 from 7am, will host a range of ANKC sled dog racing classes including 1 and 2 Dog Scooter classes and 3, 4 and 6 Dog Rig classes. The race will be held on a double header weekend offering the Saturday morning ANKC event and an Open Sled Dog Race held on Saturday night. Sunday morning will be hosted by Sled Dog Racing Queensland who will be mentoring the ASTCQ through their first Race event.
Sled Dog Racing Queensland President Ms Emily Vourlides says “it’s fantastic to have the ANKC community getting on board with Sled Dog Racing in Queensland” after spending many years reaching out to clubs to try and get events running. Though Sled Dog Racing in Australia has been a regular occurrence since the late 80’s – early 90’s and is becoming increasingly popular as an open Dog Sport, this will be the first time Queensland will host an ANKC affiliated race. While fundamentally the two types of racing are very similar, there is definitely room and demand for both from competitors. While open races are very much speed and performance-oriented awarding the classic 1st, 2nd and 3rd places within classes is based solely on fastest times. ANKC Sled Dog Racing offers dogs the opportunity to qualify for points based on a speed standard defined by their individual breeds.
Sled Dog Races generally take place on forestry trails, where competitors and their dogs follow a marked trail loop of varying length. Mono teams: 1 dog and 1 person, typically do around 3km per heat (most races are 2 heats over 2 days) with the distance increasing as teams get larger, adding about 1-2km per dog added. Temperature and humidity conditions plays a major role in this sport, with Queensland conditions usually requiring temperatures below 12 degrees for racing to take place. For this reason, races in coastal locations aren’t feasible for racing and western locations such as Stanthorpe, Toowoomba and Blackbutt are used. Sled Dog Racing is solely a winter sport, with racing and training taking place from May–September.
Sled Dog Racing is a sport that will require a little bit of training and practice before you jump into the thick of competition. There are important skills that both the human and canine elements of your team will need to understand to give this team sport a go! There is also some specialised equipment required. Ms Vourlides said, “we do have some equipment available for loan, however demand for loan equipment can be high at races and it is not always available, so it is best to be prepared.” Such equipment includes Kickbike or offroad scooters for 1 and 2 dogs classes, Gigs Rigs or Carts for classes with more than 2 dogs, Specialized Sledding Harness, Ganglines or Bungee lines and safety equipment.
For those wishing to get involved Sled Dog Racing Queensland offer a range of training and introductory weekends running through winter to the lead up to the 16 August 2025 Sled Dog Race and all who are interested are encouraged to attend. The first one for the year was held on 16 March 2025 at the Dogs Queensland Grounds at Durack and was well attended, with lots of keen, new mushers and dogs!
Under ANKC rules Sled Dog Racing events are accessible to most medium–large breeds of dogs across Mains, Limited, Sporting and Associate registers, excluding Brachycephalic and Achondroplastic breeds.
To review your dog/s eligibility please refer to Appendix A of the ANKC Rules for the conduct of Sled Sport Events: https://dogsaustralia.org.au/media/10310/19-da-sled-sports-event-rules-01-01-25v2.pdf

Ron purchased his first Labrador in 1976 from wellknown Labrador Retriever breeder, Nora Gilbert of Jaywick.
At Nora’s invitation Ron soon discovered Retrieving Trials and this has been his life long passion ever since. This first bitch produced Ron’s Retrieving Trial Champion & Field Trial Champion – RTCH & FTCH Leolita Navaho Miss CM – Anna.
Anna gained her RTCH in 1981, winning at three consecutive trials under Peter Halford (NSW) , Bob Maver (VIC) and Terry Grice (Qld). She went on to win 20 All Age Trials and placed in two Queensland State Championships.
Ron and Anna also enjoyed competing in Spaniel and Retriever Trials with Anna becoming the first FTCH in Queensland.
Judging began in the early 1980’s and became an important role for Ron, always making time when invited, he has officiated at innumerable Queensland trials. Highlights for Ron have been his many invitations from clubs to judge interstate over the years as well as officiating at three Queensland State Championships, an ACT State Championship, Tasmania and the National
Championships in 1992, 2015 and 2022.
Ron has continued to compete and judge throughout Australia as well as serve on committees, the RAFT State and National Committee, serve as Club Presidents and be fully involved in the conduct of Retrieving Trials, and title a few more dogs, during the past 49 years.
In recent years Ron has had the opportunity to visit the United Kingdom. Visiting there in 2018 he participated in several Field Trials, including the IGL, International Gundog League, which is the highest level of Championship in the UK. Returning again in 2024 he participated again in the IGL as well as several Local Field Trials.
Ron quotes: These visits have allowed me to gain a greater knowledge of the working of Retrieving and Field Trials internationally and have been very informative and greatly expanded my knowledge of the international scene and how it compares to our Australian sport of Retrieving. I have met and continue to communicate with very knowledgeable dog trainers and handlers from the UK.
However, the future and growth of Retrieving here in Australia remain my focus and passion.

On the weekend of 15 and 16 March 2025, Yuggera Canine Club held a Level 1 (TSD1) Track and Search Trial to kick off the 2025 trialling season. The annual TSD1 level trial is intended to assist newcomers to the sport with gaining familiarity with the assessment process and the trial environment, which is unique in the sheer number of people (up to seven per track!) required to run Track & Search trials.
Thank you to judges Liz Buchanan and Ann-Marie Boyd, and to the many helpers, for a smooth and successful trial.
Track and Search involves training dogs to follow a simulated “lost person” or tracklayer by a variety of methods including following ground scent or air scenting. Along the way, they must also pinpoint discarded 'articles' which are items dropped by the tracklayer. A Track & Search Level 1 track
is approximately 800 metres in length with 3-5 changes in direction, and over a variety of surfaces including vegetated, variable and hard surfaces. Commencing at least 1 hour after the track is laid, the dog must successfully locate the tracklayer and at least one article in order to pass the assessment.
Of the six dogs entered in the trial, four teams achieved their TSD1 qualification. Congratulations to:
• Kimmie Brett and 'Star' (Flat Coated Retriever)
• Joanne Radics and 'Bailey' (Associate)
• Michelle Cook and 'Loki' (A ssociate)
• Niels Reuver and 'Bonnie' (Dachshund Standard Smooth Haired)
If you are interested in learning more about the Track & Search discipline, please refer to the Dogs Australia website or contact Rob Harrison at Dogs Queensland for more information at: rob@dogsqueensland.org.au

Dogs Queensland has become increasingly aware of Puppy Scam Websites using legitimate Dogs Queensland Registration and Queensland Breeder Identification (BIN) Numbers to sell puppies. Dogs Queensland Registration Numbers are obtained from legitimate websites such as Dogs Queensland or DogzOnline, where they are displayed as required by the Queensland Government.
Please see the Queensland Dog Breeder Fact Sheets for regulations and guidelines for Queensland Dog Breeders.
An example of a typical scam is:
• A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet.
• The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix.
• A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry.
• Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published.
• No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website.
• The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures.
• The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.
As a breeder what can you do to avoid being an unknowing victim of a Puppy Scam:
• Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix.
• Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate.
• Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct in-person contact with you.
• Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details.
• Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.

Opinions and information published in the Dog World magazine are solely those of the individual authors and advertisers and do not necessarily reflect the advice or opinions of Dogs Queensland.
The organisation assumes no responsibility or liability for any statements made, and suggests that individuals make their own enquiries and seek their own specialist and/ or independent veterinary or other advice.
• Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct inperson contact with you.
• Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details.
• Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.
As a buyer what can you do to avoid being a victim of a Puppy Scam:
• Verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland.
• Ensure communications are made to verified contact details.
• Meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.
• If paying online, use a credit card or PayPal where you have a degree of buyer protection.
• Check website is an established site with a website security certificate.
• Avoid websites without physical address or phone numbers.
• Ask for proof, including ANKC registration papers and veterinary health records for any puppy.
Importantly you should report any suspect sites or advertising to the ACCC ScamWatch website. Please let us know about any suspect websites too by contacting Dogs Queensland on 3252 2661 or by email at info@dogsqueensland.org.au.
enquiries please email: info@dogsqueensland.org.au or call (07) 3252 2661.
