President’s Message Our DQ Bushfire Charity Show with Beaudesert Kennel Club I am writing this the Thursday before the Charity Show this Saturday and I am so heart warmed by the response to this Dogs Qld Show so wonderfully organised by Beaudesert Kennel Club and supported by an array of sponsors, judges, volunteers and you, the people in our wider dog community. The object is to maximise the funds flowing to our hardworking Rural Fire Brigades and that will certainly happen. Queensland has its well-earned reputation for natural disasters with floods and cyclones, but I cannot ever remember the dry conditions we are seeing throughout this State and NSW at this time of the year. The last I heard was that there were 80 uncontained fires in Qld. Our firies are being pushed to the limit with weeks of frontline fire management. So, in the midst of this testing environment it is great to see this Charity Show happening. We have our moments in the dog world but in the time of a crisis our values come to the fore and we support causes important to us. And this is clearly one of those. Entries closed yesterday and, in a word, Wow! With Special Classes a total entry of 1890 dogs. This is getting into the territory of the total conformation entry at our Ekka. Entries have flowed in for special dogs from interstate, New Zealand and the USA so I understand. A great initiative was a sponsored mat prize for the Breed Club with the most breed entries. How amazing is the Rottweiler breed with 132 dogs entered. This was followed by the British Bulldog fraternity with 71 dogs entered. I was chuffed to see my whippet breed in third place with 64 dogs entered. With Dogs Qld not charging a surcharge on entries and Show Manager donating their online fee the SM entry revenue alone is just under $26k. And this figure will increase on the day of the show. Thanks again to all concerned in making this event the success it is. Fire and Emergency Dogs Qld Member Network With this ongoing fire emergency please remember to email rob@dogsqueensland.org.au with your details if you can provide emergency accommodation for our members and their dogs if they need to leave their property on short notice. Please give thought and planning to your fire escape plan should the need arise.

For those in related needy circumstances for your dogs please contact the office as we have dry dog food available that was kindly donated by Royal Canin. Dogs Qld Grounds As you can see from this photo, the renovation of our ring 11 to 16 continues with the hydro spray grass happening on 19 November. It is so important that people and dogs do not walk on this area during this critical germination period. A big thank you again to all who have helped with this great ground improvement initiative. DQ 2020 Planning Your Board with Rob Harrison had a very productive planning session on Sunday 17 November. There was a long list of 2020 priorities that will be further finetuned and shared with members before long for discussion and feedback. We are looking to update our Strategic Plan for the 2020 to 2025 period. This session will be complemented by our forthcoming session with Tara King on 8 December with the Board and invited members. Limited Register It is my very strong view that the question of the limited register needs to be addressed next year. I have had a real concern that the increased use of this register by breeders is closing the door to many new dog owners engaging in our many activities. This also raises the question whether limited register dogs should be exempt from DNA testing and its benefits in ensuring the integrity of our breed database. Early next year I would like to put out some discussion points to members and particularly breeders on this subject by way of consultation. I would finally like to wish you and your families, and dogs and hounds, a safe and very happy Christmas and all the best in the start of a new decade in 2020. Ulla Greenwood President

THE CAVALIER KING CHARLES SPANIEL

DOG WORLD December 2019

There is no actual certainty about the origins of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Toy spaniels of various types are known to have existed for several centuries. Some claim that all spaniels originated from Spain, but France, the Low Countries, Germany and Italy all had their small spaniels too. In fact the origin of the word ’Spaniel’ is described by the Oxford English Dictionary as being from the Old French word ‘Espaigneul’ which meant ‘Spanish Dog’. This in turn originated from the Latin ‘Hispaniolus’, which simply means ’Spanish’. Possibly the first record of toy spaniels in England came from certain writings around the 16th century. Paintings by many of the old masters depict small spaniels- most likely the forerunner of our breed. Toy spaniels became the favourites in court circles and in the great houses of England and Scotland, particularly during the reign of Charles I and II. Charles II gave his name to the breed and was seldom seen without these little dogs. Others have described the red and white toy spaniels kept by the John Churchill, the Duke of Marlborough. He was reputed to have had a cavalier with him at the battle of Blenheim, and our very popular chestnut/ white cavaliers were named after that battle, as was his famous residence Blenheim Palace.

One of the early pioneers of this breed was a Mrs Hewitt Pitt, who through her enterprise and skill has been responsible for the rebirth of the breed and its development to the present day. Cavaliers first made their appearance in Australia in the early 1960s. Many of the early Cavaliers were imported from either the United Kingdom or New Zealand. Today the gene pool has widened and there are Cavaliers in this country from European countries as well as the United States. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is an active, graceful and gentle dog. There are four recognized colours within the breed. These include the Blenheim and the Tricolours which are known as the Parti -Colours, and the Black and Tan and the Ruby which make up the Whole Colours. The Blenheim which is the colour most commonly seen is a rich chestnut, well broken up on a pearly white background. The markings on the head should be evenly divided leaving room between the ears for the much valued lozenge mark or spot which is a unique characteristic of the breed. Tricolours are black and white in colour- well broken, with tan markings over the eyes, cheeks, inside the ears, legs and the underside of the tail.

Queen Victoria also had a favourite Tricolour cavalier called “Dash’ who was her constant companion. Up until the end of the 18th century, toy spaniels varied a good deal in type, size and colour. Over time certain changes crept in following the fashion of the day. It wasn’t until 1926 when a Mr Rosswell Eldridge of Long Island New York visited England and was disappointed to find that the flat-skulled little spaniels with the tapered muzzle had all but disappeared. He therefore offered a prize of twenty five pounds annually at Crufts, for the dog and bitch most resembling those shown in the paintings during the time of Charles II.

Black and Tans should be raven black with tan markings above the eyes, cheeks, inside the ears, on the chest and legs and the underside of the tail, and the Ruby should be a rich red. White markings are not acceptable on either the Black and Tan or the Ruby. ‘

Because of their placid natures they are also fairly tolerant of other animals within the family. They are very much a people dog and will be happy either sitting on your lap, snuggling on the lounge or going on a country hike. They do not do well being left alone for long periods.

Cavaliers should range in size from approximately 5.4kg to 8kgs. Their coats are silky and a mature dog will usually have plenty of feathering on the legs, tail, chest and underbelly. The Cavalier coat is not usually trimmed, but should be groomed regularly to keep them looking at their best. Their coats will shed so be prepared for some silky hairs on the furniture.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is an extremely versatile breed. They are highly trainable and many compete in such disciplines such as agility, obedience, Rally O, dancing with dogs, tracking, luring, endurance running and conformation showing. Their willingness to please makes them the perfect candidate to be trained as therapy dogs and many do this very successfully.

The Cavalier is noted for its temperament. They have a most gentle disposition and are ideally suited as companions or ‘comforter dogs’ across all ages.

Cavaliers are also a sporting dog and will enjoy a good walk, a run in the park or a swim in the river. Spaniels were bred as hunting dogs throughout the centuries and the cavalier is no exception, and likes nothing better than chasing a bird or some other form of wild life. Cavaliers have a life span of around twelve to fifteen years. Puppy buyers should seek out breeders who do the recommended heart, eye and DNA testing, as while there are no guarantees, it is better to start with a puppy from health tested parents and grandparents, and hopefully this will ensure a long healthy life.

Is It Dangerous Anna Burke

for Dogs to Drink Salt Water?

Anyone who has ever swallowed a mouthful of salt water after swimming in the ocean knows how unpleasant it tastes. When it comes to our canine companions, drinking salt water isn’t just dangerous for dogs, it can also be deadly.

Dogs Drinking Salt Water

Dogs love playing at the beach, but games of fetch, chasing waves, and swimming can all lead to salt water consumption. In most cases, a few mouthfuls of salt water may only cause diarrhea. Consuming large amounts of salt water, however, can be fatal. The osmotic properties of salt water disrupt the fluid balance in your dog. This can lead to deadly amounts of fluid around the brain, inflammation, and gastric ulcers and hemorrhages. Dogs with toxic levels of sodium in their systems have a mortality rate higher than 50 percent, regardless of treatment.

Treating Saltwater Poisoning in Dogs

If you suspect that your dog has consumed a toxic amount of salt water, your best bet is to get him to the veterinarian as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, there is no specific treatment for saltwater poisoning in dogs. Your veterinarian will attempt to restore your dog’s water and electrolyte balance to normal levels.

12

DOG WORLD December 2019

Lowering sodium levels too quickly, however, can be dangerous, increasing the likelihood of cerebral edema (fluid on the brain). In ideal cases, the water and electrolyte balance will be restored over a period of 2-3 days. This usually involves hospitalization. Further supportive care and medications may be given, depending on your dog’s condition.

Symptoms of Saltwater Poisoning in Dogs

Drinking excessive amounts of salt water typically results in vomiting within a few hours. While mild cases may only involve a few bouts of diarrhea, in severe cases the dog may suffer from weakness, diarrhea, muscle tremors, and seizures. If your dog shows any of these signs, even diarrhea, call your veterinarian or local veterinary emergency hospital for advice.

Preventing Saltwater Poisoning

The amount of salt water required to reach toxic levels depends on your dog’s access to fresh water. The best thing you can do to keep your dog safe at the beach is to make sure he always has access to fresh water. If you notice your dog drinking ocean water, restrict his access, provide him with fresh water and shade, and keep an eye on him for signs of toxicity.

In the mid 1990’s Craig and Tracey Murray (Dog Trainers) were approached by Dogs Qld members Heidi & Graham Youle (proprietors of The Naturally Raw Pet Store) to see if they would be able to train a dog to indicate when their baby was going to have a seizure. Bailey was having multiple seizures a day and the family were trying to do anything and everything they could to help their child. They had heard about dogs in the USA which had been trained for persons with disabilities that have seizures and they were hoping that Craig and Tracey could train a dog to help their child. Assistance dogs were pretty much unheard of within Australia at that time. By the time Craig and Tracey researched the required information needed to train a dog, it was too late, and Bailey had lost his battle. This was heartbreaking but it only served to inspire Craig and Tracey to further their education into Assistance Dogs.

LEWIS & BOUNCER

14

DOG WORLD December 2019

Craig and Tracey stumbled through training dogs and placing them with persons with disabilities as best they knew how until they were able to afford to send Craig to NEADS (National Education for Assistance Dog Services) in the USA in 2002. This formal education was sought after more so to teach Craig how to partner a dog with a disabled handler. It’s a totally different experience to transition a dog across to a person with a disability than it is to do the initial training of the dog. The world of disability is so broad so each assistance dog must be trained to the individual needs of the handler. Having this learning experience enabled Craig and Tracey to provide a much more individualised transition for their clients. Fast forward and the Queensland Government bought in the Guide, Hearing and Assistance Dog Act in 2009. This Act encompassed all three types of service dogs under the one Act – Guide Dogs, Hearing Dogs and Assistance Dogs. Craig and Tracey were part of the advisory stakeholder group for the government whilst they were constructing the legislation and were in fact the first Assistance Dog Trainers certified within Australia. At that time, you could apply to gain certification as either an individual trainer or a training organisation (charity). Both Craig and Tracey applied for certification as individual trainers and remained that way until they founded Empower Assistance Dogs in 2016. By founding the charity, they have been able to grow their services to help more people by implementing a breeding program, puppy raising program, therapy dog team and in 2020 they are commencing a new ‘Owner Coached Assistance Dog Program’ to be delivered on site at the Dogs Queensland grounds. Empower Assistance Dogs has always provided a fully trained Guide, Hearing or Assistance Dog to

each of their clients, but the industry is changing and there are a lot of people with disabilities that already have their own dogs that ‘assist’ them. It’s these people that Empower are now looking to also help by providing regular coaching and support to ensure that these privately-owned dogs are reaching the necessary level that is required to gain their government certification. Of course, this upcoming course has an initial assessment process that must be undertaken to ensure that the dog is a suitable candidate for the job at hand and also that it is capable of meeting the requirements of the Guide, Hearing and Assistance Dog Legislation and Public Access Test. Under the legislation, not only does the dog and handler have to undergo a Public Access Test conducted by an approved trainer or training organisation, the dog must also do 3 identifiable physical tasks or behaviours to assist their handler to reduce their need for support. Empower Assistance Dogs were also the first service dog training organisation to gain certification to train all three types of service dogs – Guide Dogs, Hearing Dogs and Assistance Dogs. They did this so they could service clients with multiple disabilities that did not meet the criteria to gain a dog from some of the other service dog training organisations. For example, it would not be uncommon to see one of our child handlers

JAZMIN & COLIN

who could have vision impairment and autism, or cerebral palsy and autism, or any other disability. Each of our handlers are assessed initially to ensure that they will meet legislative requirements to be able to be partnered with one of our dogs, but we definitely are out to try to help as many people as we can which is why we are now undertaking this new Owner Coached Assistance Dog program. We’re extremely grateful to Dogs Queensland for supporting this program by allowing us to utilise the grounds for training as it is easy for persons with disability to access. It’s also amazing that our relationship with the Youle family has also gone full circle and they are now helping others via supporting Empower Assistance Dogs by feeding our puppies and dogs in training through their business The Naturally Raw Pet Store that is also located on the Dogs Queensland grounds. Should you wish to know more about Empower Assistance Dogs, please check out our website www.empowerassistancedogs.org.au We would love you to help us help others! GASTRIC DILATATION AND TORSION (VOLVULUS) What is this condition?

Dr Michael Bell

Gastric dilatation is characterised by a large distension of the stomach with air. In the case of torsion, the dilated stomach twists about its axis. Both dilatation and torsion cause abstraction to the caudal vena valve and hence impede return of blood to the heart, hence leading to shock. When the stomach dilatates or twists there is also compression to the circulation to the stomach wall resulting in debilitation of the stomach wall.

What causes dilatation and torsion of the stomach?

Large breed and deep chested dogs are more likely to be affected such as Great Dane, Irish Setter and Wolfhounds, but no single cause has been identified. However, in the large and giant breeds there are several factors that are significantly

associated with an increased risk of the dilatation or torsion, these include 1. having a first degree relative that has sustained a gastric dilatation or torsion in the past 2. fast eating 3. once daily feeding 4. increasing age 5. swallowing of excessive air 6. the dog’s personality What we do know is that the swallowing of excessive air, and the inability to evacuate this air from the mouth, or to empty it into the intestine leads to dilatation of the stomach. From here the relationship between this stomach dilatation and twisting is unknown.

What signs do affected dogs show?

Affected dogs often have a distended abdomen (due to the dilatated stomach), show nonproductive retching and salivation and are weak or collapse. If these signs are seen in a large breed or a deep chested dog the suspicion is increased.

When examined in a veterinary clinic we usually detect a dilated gas filled stomach, which is confirmed on x-ray, a high heart rate and pale gum colour and hypothermia (collapse due to the compromised contractions).

What are the dog’s chances of survival?

Approximately 15 percent of dogs with dilatation / torsion of the stomach do not survive. Dogs that have a partially dead stomach lining (which can be predicted by measuring the blood heart rate level and having a reading above six normal fl.) have a lower survival rate than those with an uncompromised stomach lining.

Can gastric dilatation/torsion be prevented?

Surgically attaching the stomach to the abdominal wall with the aim of preventing the stomach rotating has been known to reduce the chances of the stomach twisting. This is a procedure that can be considered in large breed deep chested dogs like the Weimaraner, Great Dane and Irish Setter.

Signs your dog iS getting old Royal Canin

Ageing is a natural, complex process that may impact the body’s ability to maintain several metabolic processes. There are a number of signs to be aware of when identifying whether a dog is a senior. The ageing process in dogs is a gradual one that can sometimes go unnoticed by their owners. There are a number of signs to be aware of when identifying whether a dog is a senior, as well as a number of changes that ageing dogs experience as they grow older.

Ageing dogs

Ageing is a natural, complex biological process that may impact the body’s ability to maintain several metabolic processes and increases its susceptibility to disease. As inevitable as it is, there are ways to slow down the process or at least avoid speeding it up. The main thing is to prevent or delay the onset of disease where possible, identify it at the earliest

opportunity if it does strike and treat it vigorously to preserve the dog’s health as long as possible. Preventative medicine is the favoured approach.

When is a dog considered old?

Age is a number not a condition. Maturity and old age are arbitrary concepts defined on the basis of life expectancy. A dog is regarded as mature when it reaches the mid-way point of its expected lifespan and it is old when it has three quarters of its expected lifespan behind it. Of course, dogs of different sizes do not age in the same way or at the same rate. Small breeds have a longer life expectancy than large breeds, so a small dog will age more slowly.

DOG WORLD December 2019

25

Conversely, large dogs take longer to grow to adulthood and age faster. That clearly means that they do not have the same needs.

Consequences of ageing for the body

Ageing is a natural process that affects the entire body. No organ system is spared. That said, individual susceptibility or the predisposition of an organ will contribute to the development of a disease. The main thing is to understand the ageing process to slow down its effects.

Fat deposits increase

Dogs tend to put on weight as they grow older. The animal builds up its fat deposits at the expense of muscle mass. When a lot of muscle mass is lost, the animal’s mobility will be affected, leading it to expend less energy. As a result, the dog puts on more weight, loses more muscle mass, and so on. This makes it vital to monitor the animal’s body condition so that it is prevented from putting on weight and losing muscle mass. It is also essential to treat any pain the dog may have that might prevent it from exercising.

Dental problems

Build up of plaque causes gum inflammation and infections (periodontal disease), which can lead to the teeth falling out. These gum problems mean the dog finds eating more difficult because chewing is painful. As well as the unpleasant bad breath this produces, the rapid increase of bacteria that spread in the body can cause damage to other organs. The immune system is permanently working overtime, which puts a great strain on the body, making it more susceptible to infection. Dental hygiene is essential throughout the dog’s life, but especially so in ageing dogs. Ensuring your dog is used to teeth brushing as a puppy is a preventive measure that will help to preserve the quality and health of its teeth for the whole of its life. Diet has an important role to play here. The formulation and even the physical characteristics of kibbles – size, shape, hardness – can help to slow down the build up of dental plaque.

Slower digestive transit

Digestive transit slows down in older dogs. This is linked to reduced muscle tone in the intestine and a drop in secretion of digestive acids that help to break down food. This exposes the dog to constipation often followed by diarrhoea. These problems can be controlled with an adapted diet. Just like the rest of the body, the intestine starts to work less efficiently. Its digestive performance is reduced a little, it absorbs nutrients in lower quantities and it takes more time to adapt to a change of diet. A high-quality, easily digestible food minimises these effects.

Immune system and senses

Ageing also brings a reduction in immune protection, meaning ageing dogs are more susceptible to infection and disease. Along with this, dogs experience a loss of sight and smell which may result in a reduced appetite.

around less, is less attentive or too quiet should be examined by a veterinarian. It is essential that the inevitable effects of ageing are not confused with a disability due to organ impairment. With proper care and a diet tailored to their unique needs, ageing dogs can continue to live a happy, healthy life. If you are ever unsure on how to feed and care for your ageing dog’s changing needs, it is best to consult a vet.

It is important to make sure the dog remains active even as it grows older. An animal that moves

Heat Stroke

Joanne Bibby - Fursafe

Heat stroke is a life-threatening condition all Australian dog owners should know about. Heatstroke is a state of hyperthermia (dangerously high body temperature), a condition in which the body loses the ability to cool down after being exposed to extreme heat.

Prevention

Dogs eliminate heat by panting and by way of sweat glands in their paw pads, however once a dog is unable to self-regulate, their temperature rises, and their life is threatened.

Some ideas to think about: • Have multiple water bowls in place in case a bowl is tipped over; • Ensure your backyard has shade available regardless of the time of day; • Consider a paddling pool like those half shell pools; • Give your dog electrolytes as directed on the packaging or recommended by your Vet; and • Leave your dog inside with the fan or air conditioner running at 23/24ºC Refer also to November issue of Dog World – Royal Canin article, ‘Keeping your dog cool in summer’.

Causes of Heat Stroke Exertional / Environmental • Hot weather, especially humid environments; • Leaving a dog in a hot car; • Dog left outside without shade or water; • Excessive exercise/activity on hot days; • Walking on hot roads; • Inside rooms without cooling systems; and • Lack of acclimatisation to hot environments. Biological / Medical • Obesity; • Large breeds greater than 15kg body weight, e.g. Labradors, Retrievers, Bull dogs; • Poor physical fitness; • Exaggerated physical features; Brachycephalic breeds (flat faced), Bull dogs, Pugs; short limbs; excessive skin wrinkling; • Medical conditions: respiratory; general illness; seizures; dehydration; and • Puppies / Elderly Dogs

Being aware of what causes heat stroke, provides you with the necessary guidance on how to prevent it.

Complications A dog who suffers heat stroke is at risk of many lifelong health conditions, such as, but not limited to, damage to their: • Kidneys; • Lungs; • Muscles; • Brain and • Heart. In the immediate, however, if heat stroke is not managed urgently a dog may face multiple organ failure followed by death.

DOG WORLD December 2019

29

Learning how to manage this condition will improve your dog’s chances of survival and continued wellbeing.

Signs & Symptoms Some of the signs and symptoms which your dog may begin to display are: • Dog will begin to pant excessively • Paws will be hot to the touch • Excessive drooling • May have become agitated and aggressive • Experiencing anxiety, distress and disorientation • Vomiting • Gums appear dark red, dry and tacky to the touch • Rapid heart rate: • Puppy and Small dog over 160bpm • Medium and Large dog over 100bpm • Rectal temperature over 39.2 °C • Collapse If not treated immediately, dog will go into cardiac arrest.

Action 1. Undertake Primary Assessment DRSABC a. Check for Dangers – a danger may be that the dog has become aggressive (warning: never put a muzzle on a dog who has breathing difficulties) b. Is your dog responding to your voice or your touch? If not your dog may be unconscious c. Send for help; if there is someone else in the house get them to do things like get the heat stress or first aid kit, help carry dog into house, prepare the car and call the Vet. They may also be able to help you restrain your dog d. Check the airway for vomit in the mouth, remove if there is e. Check the breathing (respirations) feel / watch the rise and fall of the chest – start artificial respiration if not breathing f. Check circulation (pulse) – start CPR if no pulse

30

DOG WORLD December 2019

2. Calm your dog; talk in a soothing way 3. Move your dog into the shade or indoors 4. Check dogs temperature – normal temperature is between 38.5°C and 39.2°C: use a lubricated rectal thermometer inserted into dog’s rectum up to 2.5cm for up to 1 minute (or until result registers); record temperature for vet 5. If your dog’s temperature is above normal, you must get your dog’s temperature down immediately; run cool (NOT ICE COLD) water over your dog’s entire body; place a towel or sheet over the dog and wet while on the dog to help with the cooling process 6. Make sure you have airflow over the dog; use a fan or air-conditioner 7. Monitor temperature every 5 minutes Warning: do not over-cool your dog as you risk hypothermia. Cease cooling at 39.2 °C. 8. Treat for shock, elevate dogs rear end, even whilst in the car, keep warm, monitor breathing and heart rate 9. Offer your dog a bowl of water to drink 10. Get to vet If you have a driver: 11. Continue the cooling process if dog’s temperature is still high; use a spray bottle of water or keep wet sheet or towel on the pet 12. If your dog stops breathing, begin artificial respiration on the way to the vet surgery 13. If your dog’s heart stops beating, begin CPR on the way to the vets.

PRESS RELEASE – LABRADOR RETRIEVER SURVEY RESULTS A survey was conducted by ANKC Ltd earlier this year to ascertain the feedback from all owners of registered Labrador Retrievers in relation to the Minimum Breeding Age for Labrador bitches being 18 months at the time of mating (unless a veterinary certificate is produced stating that for health reasons the bitch should be mated before 18 months). The response received indicated support. As this was an amendment to current regulations, the result of the survey was referred to the ANKC Board of Directors for consideration at their October 2019 Special Board meeting where it was endorsed. As a consequence the following new clause will be added to Regulations Part 6 – The Register & Registration which will be effective from 1 January, 2020: 8.12.2 The Minimum Breeding Age for Labrador Retriever bitches must be 18 months at the time of mating (unless a veterinary certificate is produced stating that for health reasons the bitch should be mated before 18 months). Breeders of litters whelped on or after 1st June, 2020, will be required to comply with the requirements as a prerequisite to registration of any litter on the ANKC Ltd Main Register. Litters which do not meet the above requirements will only be able to be placed on the Limited Register and will be flagged not to be upgraded. Tracey Barry Administrator 12 November 2019
