President’s Message
Tara King DQ Planning Session on 8 December I am just now reflecting on the excellent planning day we had yesterday with the dynamic Tara King. Tara has had a wealth of media and production experience and for instance, was the producer of the Cesar Milan dog training series in the States for many years. Tara and her husband Scott recently acquired 2 Cairn Terriers and is a new dog exhibitor and is also involved in agility in NSW. She has a passion about our dog world and is committed to helping us impact and lead the conversation around dogs nationally and also on a State and Territory basis. And we are so lucky that Tara is donating her professional services to our dog world. As mentioned previously, I found my own way to the seminar conducted by Tara for Dogs NSW on 9 November. Our seminar yesterday was attended by directors and also a good cross section of DQ members. I think Tara is on the same page as many of us in wanting to raise our profile and to communicate our knowledge and love of dogs to the wider community and to key government and other agencies. I would like to see Dogs Qld as the “go to” agency on dog related issues. Our dog world is brim full of great dog stories that just don’t see the light of day. We would like to see that change. We have 12 disciplines in our dog world and so many opportunities for people with pet dogs at home to get involved. The session yesterday was all about generating ideas and it was very productive. Some key outcomes will be provided to members in due course to enable further discussion and input. Some key issues discussed were as follows:• Finding out why we are passionate about what we do • Getting people engaged • What stands in our way • How we communicate • Building our brand and key messages Tara has kindly offered to conduct a DQ Strategic Planning day that would build on the outcomes of yesterday’s seminar. I am hoping that this will take place in February or March and will look to updating our 2015 - 2019 Strategic Plan with a particular focus on our 2020 top priorities.
Heat Policy I cannot remember there ever having been such continued dry weather with no rain at this time of the year in SEQ. And of course we are all living with the continued threat of bush fires and trying to be vigilant. As members would know, DQ does have a heat policy regarding the running of events with certain recommendations stated. It is left to individual clubs to monitor the weather conditions and make decisions about the timing and possible cancellation or postponement of events. I believe clubs take this responsibility very seriously. Mrs Sharron Taylor is currently leading a review of this policy and will be bringing recommendations to the Board in due course. We are looking to late 2020 for any possible changes. My personal opinion relates to the fact that Qld is in subtropical and tropical zones. I believe that events from November to the end of February should be held in the evening with a start time no earlier than 5pm. But I do understand that we have such a climate and humidity variation from Brisbane to Cairns when one considers that it is a similar distance from Brisbane to Melbourne. There are real challenges in developing an effective policy for our entire State and we seek input from members on this question. So please email rob@dogsqueensland.org.au with your input. I wish you and your families a very happy holiday season and I look forward to sharing great times with you in 2020. It should be a decade of great opportunities for our dog world. Let’s get the word out more about our great love of dogs and how they enrich our lives. Ulla Greenwood President

“Black Pearl of Russia”

By Kim Dawson and Natasha Sadykova
The Russian Black Terrier… Or Tchorny Terrier as they are known in Russia, was the product of a very scientific and highly effective military breeding program headed by Colonel Medvedev of the Soviet Red Star Kennels in the early 1950s. The purpose of the breeding program was to restore the Soviet Army working, protection and guard dogs that were decimated during World War II. Red Star Kennel studied,
8

selected and imported a superior stock from among the working breeds, and the experiments began. Red Star Kennel set out to develop the supreme military working dog – courageous, reliable, highly trainable and versatile. They started with crossing the male Giant Schnauzer ‘Roy’ with available bitches, mostly Rottweilers and Airedale Terriers. Later, Newfoundland,
Eastern European Shepherd, Caucasian Ovcharka, Great Dane, German Shepherd Dog, and other breeds were added to achieve the desirable qualities. The new breed, which they originally called a Black Terrier, exceeded all expectations and quickly became famous and popular among civil population for its unsurpassed devotion to the owner, high intelligence, balanced temperament and versatility. As the Black Terrier became more noble and uniform in type and temperament, a new standard was proposed, and the new breed was recognised by the FCI in 1984. The breed is now named the Russian Black Terrier, and in Russia it is called ‘a pearl of Russian selection work’.
Appearance – Not a True Terrier! Do not be deceived by the name. The Russian Black Terrier is a large, powerful, and robust working dog. With large bones and well developed muscles, they possess great strength and endurance. In appearance, they should be neither overly coarse, nor too refined or terrierlike; balance is essential. The male dogs should be larger and more masculine in appearance. They should be proportionate, and only very slightly longer than tall – this can be a little more pronounced for females. Males stand at 70 to 78cm at the withers and weigh roughly 50 to 60kg with females 66 to 74 cm and weighing 45 to 50kg. Taller specimens are allowed provided they are proportional and of excellent breed type. The Russian Black Terrier has a solid black weather-resistant double coat that is rough and thick, with some scattering of grey hairs acceptable. A long dense coat is present on the legs. One of the hallmarks of the breed is the very well developed head furnishings, moustache and beard, accentuating the massive “brick-like” rectangular head and large, black nose. For show purposes, the Russian Black Terrier’s coat should be trimmed and clipped in order to display its shape and structure, although they are not to be overly groomed.
Health and Care Average Life Expectancy: 10-14 years Russian Black Terriers are generally healthy and robust, but like all breeds, they’re prone to certain health conditions. The most commonly occurring conditions found in Russian Black Terriers are Canine Hip Dysplasia (HD) and Elbow Dysplasia (ED). Protective factors are dysplasia-free parents and a correct upbringing. Feeding the young dogs with a balanced diet and providing them with gentle low-risk exercises was shown to decrease the risk of joints’ problems. Some dogs with more profuse growth of hair in the ears may be prone to ear inflammations if not regularly cleaned. Also, the beard can become affected by fungus, particularly, if the dog lives in a wet and hot environment. The most time consuming aspect of caring for a Russian Black Terrier is coat (and beard!) maintenance. While they are a very low shedding breed, they should be brushed well every 1-2 weeks. Some owners opt for the “summer cut” in

which the body is clipped and leg hair shortened, in which case brushing and washing monthly should suffice. An important advantage of the Russian Black Terrier is the absence of a “doggy” smell and seasonal shedding; the coat is also hypoallergenic. However, they can be messy drinkers/eaters. The beard requires regular washing and brushing. The Russian Black Terrier is at home wherever you are. They thrive in both large and small living spaces, including apartments (that’s where the majority of these dogs live in Russia). Provided they receive daily exercise and mental stimulation through training, play, sport or walking, they don’t need much space.
Personality The “Blackie” has acquired the best qualities of its ancestors - the joyful disposition and energy of the Airedale terrier, the strength, courage and endurance of the Rottweiler and Giant Schnauzer, the monolithic calm and reserve of Newfoundland. But what makes this breed unique and a standout from others, is their obsession with the owner. Russian Black Terriers are extremely loyal and closely bond with their owners and family members, more so than other breeds. They will want to be close to you and thrive on sharing your life, following you from room to room. This is a dog that prefers the company of their owner to that of other people or dogs.

Remember, they were designed and perfected to guard and protect, and the protective instinct will manifest itself to some degree. They are very territorial in the protection of their family and belongings and will not hesitate to defend those they love. Russian Black Terriers can be very intimidating when visitors come into their territory regardless of how much socialization the dog has, and you may need to be prepared to crate them when unknown guests or repairmen arrive. If you want a dog that happily greets everyone who comes to the home, you might be better to consider different breed.

Outside the home, the Russian Black Terrier can be aloof with strangers and take their time considering whether a person is a threat. Luckily, one of the specific features of the breed is they respond to a situation rapidly, and quick to settle afterwards. Also, they are happy to be guided by the owner. So, your friends will quickly become their friends. Mature Russian Black Terriers can be very gentle, tolerant and respectful towards children whom they are raised with. The same applies to other family pets of all sizes. However, young Blackies are large, active and often unaware of their size and power. Little children or small pets may be accidentally knocked over, stood on etc. Please make sure that you supervise all play.

Dr Sara Pitts BVSc. (Hons I), Dr Courtney Fuller BVSc. and Marnie Scheiwe BAppsc at Rosewood Vet Service are now offering Canine Reproduction services including:
Outside the house, Russian Black Terriers can be thought of as ‘introverts’ among the dogs. Although they not necessarily aggressive, they may not be willing to socialise with every canine. Remember their owner is the only company they crave. If an unwelcome dog disrespectfully invades their space, they will be quick to issue a verbal reprimand. For this reason, many species of this breed are unsuited to dog parks, although, they can differ in their character, just like humans. Puppies exhibit the breed’s inherent intelligence and problem solving ability from a very young age. Early training and socialization is vital, so the protective instincts are channelled into proper and reliable behaviour. Raising and owning a Russian Black Terrier may require experience, although first-time owners will also succeed if they are committed and willing to invest time and resources into educating themselves. This highly trainable breed possesses extremely high intelligence, a strong desire to learn and please its owner. Good training requires that the owner is firm, fair and consistent. The Russian Black Terriers are slow to mature. Giving them too much choice and freedom before their brain is fully matured will be more detrimental than beneficial. Strict but easy to understand rules and routine will guarantee your success. At the age of about 2-3 years they reach their true wisdom and reliability, and from then on they will be your most loyal friend, guard, sport companion and anything else you want them to be. COMMON SKIN CONDITIONS
IN DOGS ROYAL CANIN
Dogs can suffer from a variety of skin conditions, causing pain, itching and inflammation. Learn about some common symptoms as well as ways to support your dog. Depending on your dog’s breed, age, and a number of genetic factors, you may find they are prone to skin conditions. You can support your dog’s recovery, as well as prevent future problems, in a number of simple ways. WHAT’S IMPORTANT ABOUT YOUR DOG’S SKIN? A dog’s skin acts as a barrier between their organs, muscles and skeleton and their environment. It’s the largest organ in their body and, including their hair, makes up around 12% of their entire body weight. It offers vital protection against parasites, stores fat, water and vitamins, and houses sensitive nerve endings. The skin is a barrier which prevents water loss, reducing the chance of dehydration and helps regulate their body temperature. A dog’s skin also secretes sebum, an oil-like substance which creates a biofilm over the surface of the skin. This film protects against external threats by managing the balance of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ bacteria, and helps prevent bacteria from multiplying. It also maintains the pH balance of your dog’s skin to help prevent irritation from environmental changes. In these ways, your dog’s skin is an important filter between their environment and their body, and needs to be looked after properly. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF SKIN CONDITIONS IN MY DOG? Much like the symptoms of a skin condition in a human, your dog might suffer from dry, irritated, or red skin in certain areas. Their coat may appear dry or greasy, there may be some hair loss, or you may notice they have dandruff. It’s likely that the first thing you’ll spot is your dog scratching itself more as it tries to relieve some of its discomfort.
Particular breeds of dog have their own skin conditions. Dogs such as Bulldogs or Pugs can suffer irritation from bacteria and yeast becoming ‘stuck’ in their folds of skin. Medium-sized dogs who may spend lots of time outside or working are exposed to environmental pressures, which means their skin’s natural defences need special support. German Shepherds, Dalmatians, Miniature Schnauzers and Shih Tzus all have similarly sensitive skin, so it’s important to ask your vet if there are any genetic predispositions to skin conditions you should know about. WHY DO DOGS GET SKIN CONDITIONS? Some skin conditions in dogs are created or exacerbated by external factors. Dogs who spend a lot of time outdoors are in contact with a greater variety of potential pests and parasites, which in turn can cause inflammation. Although hygiene is important, if you use a shampoo or cleaning product which strips their skin of sebum this can similarly cause problems. A nutritionally-unbalanced diet may contribute to the occurrence of skin conditions in dogs. There are several types of adverse reactions to food, and the most common is allergic. As a result, symptoms such as scratching, redness and inflammation may be triggered. Your dog’s sensitivity, combined with their diet, can then cause signs of skin irritation. Keeping your dog’s skin healthy requires a complex mix of nutrients, including long chain fatty acids like those from the omega 3 and omega 6 groups. Trace minerals like zinc and copper are important for overall cell function and to help maintain a high-quality coat. Most importantly, high quality proteins which are easy to digest are essential. Your dog’s skin and coat uses a good portion of their daily protein intake, so the right type and amount of protein is important. You can support your dog’s skin and hair health, and take preventative action against many common skin conditions, by choosing an appropriate food and being aware of any external factors they might encounter. If you’re unsure, ask your veterinarian.

TRACK & SEARCH GRAND CHAMPION “BARRETT”
Search Dogs to the Rescue! One of the most terrifying incidents that can occur in any dog owner’s life is for their pet to go missing. While using social media and canvassing the neighbourhood may often quickly reunite a frantic owner with their missing pet, there are many cases where pets are missing for days or weeks with no sightings. In one such instance, Dogs Queensland member Carmel Vierow and her Labrador Retriever “Willow” (Dual Ch(T)(Neut) TS Grand Ch Sarshai Wizards Magic) volunteered to assist with the search after the owners requested help via social media. By this time, Enya the Bernese Mountain Dog had been missing over a week from her Oakey Flat Road home. Carmel and Willow assisted in the search over several days and narrowed the search area to where Enya was eventually located, including tracking back from the last confirmed sighting to the owner’s house. Although sport-trained tracking dogs have been imprinted to search exclusively for human scent
14
DOG WORLD January 2020
and typically do not participate in searches for other dogs, Carmel and “Willow” have made the transition successfully. Search dogs can help by concentrating the efforts of searchers to a more accurately targeted area, resulting in the more rapid location of the missing dog. Labradors such as Willow have a particular talent for tracking and detection, although a diverse range of breeds participate in the sport of tracking. The search for Enya has not been the only occasion where Carmel and Willow have assisted in locating lost pets. In August 2018, Grace the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel had been missing in the Stafford area for almost four days when Carmel and Willow arrived to assist in the search. The team tracked Grace in the Kedron Brook Creek area, where several sightings had been reported. While working the area, the missing dog was flushed out of hiding and Grace was captured in a nearby house yard and reunited with her owner.
Previously, Carmel and Willow have also been involved in identifying the target search area for a missing boxer in the Albany Creek area. Other dogs who have recently assisted in searches for missing dogs are Dogue De Bordeaux “Barrett” (T.Ch TS Grand Ch Holdingaces Barrett ) who performed a 2km length rural track at night, resulting in a confirmed sighting of a missing Chinese Crested immediately after the search was halted for safety reasons. The team returned the next day and tracked an area bordering the highway, with a member of the public sighting the dog shortly afterwards. The missing dog was reunited with their owner the following day. Caboolture Club member Therese Berry and Miniature Schnauzer “Rocket” (T.Ch Jabbawokki Rocket CD RN TSDX) recently assisted in the search for a missing Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in the Bellmere area. They narrowed down the search area and identified the area in which the missing dog was located.
Tracking and its urban counterpart Track and Search are vigorous non-competitive outdoor sports where dog and owner can both enjoy the dog’s natural love and skill for following a scent. A dog’s ability to detect scent is up to 100,000 times greater than ours, often used to locate humans, other animals, illegal TRACK & SEARCH GRAND CHAMPIONS “WILLOW” drugs, explosives, AND CARMEL. contraband and even the presence of disease and physical conditions such as low blood sugar levels. All dog breeds are capable of learning to track and competing in the sport. Past champions include a wide variety of breeds: Pomeranians, Papillions, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, King Charles Spaniels, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Manchester Terriers, miniature Dachshunds, Whippets, Basenji, Boxers, Dogue De Bordeaux, Newfoundland, Dobermans, Schnauzers, Russian Black Terriers, Siberian Huskies, Dalmations and Poodles, alongside the more common German Shepherd Dogs, Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Belgian Shepherds, Cocker Spaniels and Springer Spaniels. What is the Australian Canine Eye Scheme (ACES)? The Australian Canine Eye Scheme (ACES) is an Australia wide assessment programme that offers veterinary specialist certification for a range of congenital and adult onset hereditary eye conditions for registered dog breeds. The Australian Veterinary Association and the Australian National Kennel Council both endorse the programme.
What is the purpose of ACES? The purpose of ACES is to bring together registered dog breeders and veterinary eye specialists to work towards minimising the incidence of painful or vision threatening hereditary canine eye conditions. Regular ACES examinations give breeders valuable information to help plan mating of their animals to reduce or sometimes eliminate such eye conditions from their stock. It also means that breeders can reassure potential owners and other breeders about the quality of their animals. Litter examinations can be performed to screen whole litters prior to sale, which can be of benefit in the case of future buyer disputes.
What happens in an ACES examination? ACES examinations are performed by registered specialist Veterinary Ophthalmologists (animal eye specialists). A full eye examination is performed where the specialist examines the dog’s eyelids, tear duct openings, eye surface and inside the eye
16
DOG WORLD January 2020
including the iris, lens, vitreous, retina and optic nerve. The Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists Ophthalmology Chapter defines the required examination procedures and ensures that they meet international standards. Eye diseases known to be inherited in each different breed are recorded in an ACES examination. Any additional abnormalities detected are also recorded. A certificate is generated which is then given and/or emailed to the breeder. The information collected for each dog is recorded and collated, and is useful to assess the incidence of each condition in each breed, and also to help monitor for any new emerging diseases.
How can I arrange an ACES examination for my dog or litter of puppies? ACES examination appointments can be made with a Veterinary Ophthalmologist registered to issue ACES certificates in Queensland.
Please see ACES registered panellists for a list of registered specialist Veterinary Ophthalmologists and their clinic details, or visit the Australian National Kennel Council Website ACES information page at http:// orchid.ankc.org.au. In dog breeds where early onset eye disease is being assessed, examination is recommended between 6 – 12 weeks for all puppies in the litter. An initial adult ACES examination is best performed before the dog is 12 months old.

The success of the ACES program is thanks to diligent breeders, and the ACES panellists, in particular Dr Bruce Robertson who pioneered and ran the scheme for many years. ACES is now transitioning from a paper to online certificates with the expertise of Ron de Jong of Wild Systems.

Changing of the guard
AUSTRALIAN ARMY WELCOMES
CANINE MASCOT PRIVATE RIDGLEIGH BLUE IV The Australian Army canine mascot, Sergeant Ridgleigh Blue III, has retired after nine years of loyal service with 6th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (6 RAR).
“Once I’ve finished teaching him obedience and some tricks, Private Blue IV will be due to take over mascot duties and lead the battalion for about six years.”
Sergeant Blue will be succeeded by another Australian cattle dog as 6 RAR’s mascot, who has been enlisted into the Army as Private Ridgleigh Blue IV.
Private Blue IV is 6 RAR’s eighth Australian Cattle Dog mascot with the Blue Heeler tradition beginning in 1975.
“Private Blue IV is a very energetic puppy who has been eager to begin his duties as 6 RAR’s newest mascot,” Major Varcoe from 6 RAR said. “As with all new enlistees, Private Blue IV requires formal recruit training. This will be provided by the dog handlers of the 2nd Combat Engineer Regiment, a local unit which has a close working relationship with 6 RAR.” His training is progressing quickly, according to handler Private Jarred Little, who said he already knew how to sit, stay, lie down, roll over and heel, among other things. “He’s pretty good inside; he doesn’t really chew anything at home – except for the garden.

He is one of the most responsive dogs they have trained and as his breeder I feel completely proud and honoured to have a pup take on the role as an official mascot for the Australian Army. I wish him all the best in his new role. Melissa Powell

CALCIFICATION OF THE SUPRASPINATUS TENDON WRITTEN BY DR MICHAEL BELL
What is it? This is a degenerative condition which affects the muscles of the supraspinatus tendon. It causes mild to moderate lameness of the affected leg which is insidious in origin, and is most commonly seen in medium to large adult dogs. Unlike arthritis the lameness gets worse throughout the day with minimal or moderate exercise. However, when manipulating the shoulder pain is often not detected and the calcium deposit is normally not large enough to feel. When x-raying the calcification is normally only seen on careful scrutiny of a side view x-ray of the shoulder. Often a “skyline” view of the shoulder is required to correctly see the calcification when present. The problem is that presence of calcification can be asymptomatic and because pain is often not detected on flexion or extension of the shoulder, a digression of the calcification causing lameness is often preceptive, other conditions such as biceps tendinitis and chronic congenital joint lesions as a cause of lameness need to be ruled out. The amount of calcification present is not relative to the amount of pain present.
How is it treated? The calcification is surgically resected from the supraspinatus tendon. A bandage is then applied in such a way that the wrist is placed in a flexed position for 10 – 12 days. By doing this the dog is prevented from using the leg, hence allowing the tendon to heal. Following this the dog is given limited activity for another 2-3 weeks. Hydrotherapy is not recommended for several months because it may stress the supraspinatus.
What are the chances of recovery? So long as the calcification is the cause of the lameness the prognosis for full recovery is excellent. The lameness usually improves within 2-4 weeks with total recovery occurring within 5-8 weeks.

Why is my dog losing weight? Royal Canin
Rapid or sudden weight loss can be an indicator of a more serious condition – here are a few of the potential causes to be aware of. Your dog’s weight will change over the course of their lifetime, depending on their age, breed, whether they are neutered and any health conditions they may have. But if you’ve noticed your dog has suddenly and unexpectedly begun to lose weight, this could be a symptom of a serious disorder. Not all sudden weight loss is due to a chronic condition, so make sure to speak to a vet as soon as possible to help work out what the problem is and what treatment is available for your dog.
Gastro-intestinal disorders in dogs Weight loss can be a sign your dog is suffering from one of many possible gastro-intestinal disorders, which can affect their stomach and intestines. Other symptoms to look out for are chronic diarrhoea or constipation, vomiting, dehydration and lethargy. When your dog is suffering from a gastro-intestinal problem, they may lose their appetite and begin to lose weight as digesting food causes them discomfort.
32
DOG WORLD January 2020
Chronic renal failure in dogs A serious and common problem which occurs in 2% to 5% of all dogs, chronic renal failure is a condition where your dog’s kidneys stop working effectively and aren’t able to perform excretory or metabolic functions. The average age of diagnosis is six and a half years old, so it’s a condition which often affects older dogs. Alongside weight loss, you may notice your dog is lethargic, weak and suffers with vomiting or diarrhoea.
Megaesophagus in dogs Weight loss is a secondary symptom of a condition called megaesophagus, which prevents your dog from fully digesting and absorbing its food. In dogs with this illness, their esophagus swells, becomes enlarged and begins to malfunction as it no longer transports food to the stomach effectively.
Liver disease in dogs Along with vomiting, refusal to eat and generalised lethargy, sudden weight loss is an early sign of liver disease.
New dedicated canine reproduction facility opening on Monday 9th December at
Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) in dogs EPI is a disorder whereby your dog is unable to digest food properly as their pancreas isn’t producing enough or the right digestive enzymes to support their system. This means they aren’t getting the nutrients or energy they need, and will start to suffer weight loss. This condition is also characterised by chronic diarrhoea and a ravenous appetite, as your dog attempts to get the energy it knows it is lacking by eating more food.
Diabetes in dogs Diabetes is, unfortunately, a common condition among dogs. When it’s poorly controlled, dogs are likely to lose weight relatively quickly – often a dog is diagnosed with diabetes after the initial period of increasing weight loss. The majority of diabetic dogs are middle-aged or older and are likely to already be fairly lean with a reduced body mass; if your dog fits this description, it’s important to keep an eye on their weight to make sure it’s stable.
What if you notice sudden weight loss in your dog Because sudden weight loss is a common symptom for some complex, chronic conditions such as renal failure or diabetes, it’s crucial you book a consultation with a vet if you notice your dog has rapidly lost weight. Your vet will conduct a series of tests, work out what is the likely cause for the weight loss, and offer a tailored treatment schedule for your pet. You may be asked to change their diet to help rebalance their weight and, in the case of gastro-intestinal problems, soothe and manage their symptoms.

Behavioural Signs You may think that a dog turns aggressive without warning, but there are many signs a dog gives before attacking or breaking into a fight. By learning the following signs, you will arm yourself with an invaluable knowledge that you can take with you when you head out for a walk; swim at the beach; play off leash at the park or when your own dogs are at play. Warnings to become familiar with. • Dog displays a stiff body • You may see dog’s hackles raised (hair stands on end from neck down back) • Tail wagging stiffly • Dog makes direct eye contact • Pupils become dilated (black part of eyes become large) • Ears flatten and look pinned back • The dog may snarl, growl and/or bar teeth • A bark that sounds guttural and threatening • Lunging forward or charging at the other dog with no contact • “Muzzle punch” (the dog literally punches the other dog with their nose).
Safety Precautions • When on leash and before introducing your dog to another, ask the owner/pawrent if your dog can meet theirs; you may be told that their dog isn’t particularly friendly. • If you are going off leash, check out the other dogs: type, size, body language to assess if your dog will be safe; if ever in doubt leave the off leash area;
• Never place yourself between two dogs; • Don’t approach roaming dogs (those who have escaped their home); • If you have a towel or blanket, throw it over the face of the attacking dog, it may cause the dog to release if the dog cannot see, then quickly remove your dog if at all possible; • If you have a sick / injured dog in the home keep them separated from other household pets; • Assess the dog – Assess the environment. If you are fearful of your dog being attacked, do not take them to an off leash area.

Send for help; if there is someone else in the house get them to do things like get the first aid kit, help carry dog into house, prepare the car and call the Vet. They may also be able to help you restrain your dog or help manage the wounds. d. Check the airway for vomit in the mouth, remove if there is; look to see if the airway is intact or swollen. e. Check the breathing (respirations) feel / watch the rise and fall of the chest – start artificial respiration if not breathing. f. Check circulation (pulse) – start CPR if no pulse. 2. If your dog has been violently shaken treat for potential spinal injury and limit movement. 3. Apply pressure to stop severe bleeding for approximately 3 minutes. 4. 21 Symptoms You Should Never Ignore
Petplan Australasia
There are serious symptoms that should never be ignored. A symptom is defined as “any problem that can indicate an underlying disease” and may be your first clue to the presence of a life-threatening problem in your dog. Here is a list of 21 symptoms that should never be ignored! 1. Pacing and Restlessness
3. Collapse or Fainting
In dogs, pacing and restlessness can indicate pain, discomfort or distress. Restlessness can be associated with a condition called “bloat”. Bloat most commonly occurs in large breed or deep-chested dogs. Pacing and restless can be an indicator of a serious problem.
Acute collapse is a sudden loss of strength causing your dog to fall and be unable to rise. Some dogs that suddenly collapse will actually lose consciousness. This is called fainting or syncope. Some dogs recover very quickly and look essentially normal just seconds to minutes after collapsing, whereas others stay in the collapsed state until helped. All the reasons for collapse or fainting are serious and should not be ignored. See your veterinarian immediately.
2. Unproductive Retching Dogs that attempt to vomit and are unable to bring anything up is a common sign of “bloat”. You should call your veterinarian immediately.

4. Not Eating or Loss of Appetite Anorexia is a term used to describe the situation where an animal loses his appetite and does not want to eat or is unable to eat. There are many causes of a “loss of appetite” and is often the first indication of illness. Regardless of cause, loss of appetite can have a serious impact on an animal’s health if it lasts 24 hours or more. Young animals less than 6 months of age are particularly prone to the problems brought on by loss of appetite.
5. Losing Weight Weight loss is a physical condition that results from a negative caloric balance. This usually occurs when the body uses and/or excretes essential nutrients faster than it can consume them. Essentially more calories are being burned than are being taken in. Weight loss is considered clinically important when it exceeds 10 percent of the normal body weight and is not associated with fluid loss. There are several causes for this, some of which can be very serious.
6. Breathing Problems Respiratory distress, often called dyspnea, is laboured, difficult breathing or shortness of breath. This can occur at any time during the
breathing process, during inspiration (breathing in) or expiration (breathing out). When your dog has trouble breathing, he may not be able to get enough oxygen to his tissues. Additionally, if he has heart failure, he may not be able to pump sufficient blood to his muscles and other tissues. Dyspnea is often associated with accumulation of fluid (oedema) in the lungs or the chest cavity (pleural effusion). This fluid can lead to shortness of breath and coughing. This is a very serious symptom and should be evaluated immediately.
7. Red Eye A “red eye” is a non-specific sign of inflammation or infection. It may be seen with several different diseases including those involving different parts of the eye including the external eyelids, third eyelid, conjunctiva, cornea, and sclera. It may also occur with inflammation of the structures inside the eye, with glaucoma (high pressure within the eye) or with certain diseases of the orbit (eye socket). Either one or both eyes can become red, depending upon the cause of the problem. Some of the possible causes can be serious and ultimately cause blindness.
8. Jaundice Jaundice, also referred to as icterus, and describes the yellow colour taken on by the tissues throughout the body due to elevated levels of bilirubin, a substance that comes from the breakdown of red blood cells. There are several causes for jaundice and regardless of the cause; jaundice is considered abnormal and serious in the dog.
9. Trouble Urinating “Trouble urinating” can include straining to urinate, frequent attempts at urination, and evidence of discomfort when urinating. Discomfort may be demonstrated by crying out during urination, excessive licking at the urogenital region or turning and looking at the area. There are several underlying causes. Some of the causes if left untreated can result in death in as little as 36 hours.

10. Urinating and Drinking Excessively These signs are often early signs of disease including kidney failure, diabetes mellitus, thyroid gland problems, uterine infection (called pyometra), as well as other causes. Dogs normally take in about 20 to 40 millilitres per pound of body weight per day, or one to two cups per day for a normal sized dog. If you determine that your pet is drinking excessively, make an appointment with your veterinarian.
11. Fever A fever is defined as an abnormally high body temperature resulting from internal controls. It is believed that fever is a method of fighting infection. The body resets the temperature control area of the brain to increase the body temperature – probably in response to invasion of foreign matter such as bacteria or viruses. The normal temperature in dogs is 100.5 to 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit. If your pet temperature is high, call your veterinarian.
12. Seizure A seizure or convulsion is a sudden excessive firing of nerves in the brain. The severity of the seizure can vary between a far-away look and twitching in one part of the face to your dog falling on his side, barking, gnashing his teeth, urinating, defecating and paddling his limbs. A seizure can last from seconds to minutes. Seizures are symptoms of some neurological disorder – they are not in themselves a disease. They can be caused by several disorders including epilepsy, toxins or tumours.
13. Bruising and Bleeding Abnormal bruising and bleeding arises with disorders of hemostasis (clotting). Clotting abnormalities are also called coagulopathies, because they reflect the inability of the blood to coagulate or clot. Bleeding from clotting disturbances may occur into the skin, the mucous membranes, and various internal organs, tissues,
and body cavities. The impact of such bleeding on the affected individual may be mild or severe depending on the degree of blood loss.
14. Coughing Coughing is a common protective reflex that clears secretions or foreign matter from the throat, voice box, and/or airways, and protects the lungs against aspiration. It affects the respiratory system by hindering the ability to breathe properly. Common causes include obstruction in the windpipe, bronchitis, pneumonia, heartworm disease, lung tumours, kennel cough and heart failure. Some of the causes are life threatening and all pets with a cough should be evaluated by a veterinarian.
15. Bloated or Distended Abdomen Abdominal distension is an abnormal enlargement of the abdominal cavity. This term is usually reserved for abdominal enlargement due to causes other than simple obesity. One cause of abdominal distension is abnormal fluid accumulation. Another cause of abdominal distension is enlargement of any abdominal organ including the liver, kidneys, or spleen. Distension of the stomach with air (“bloating”) or fluid or distension of the uterus (womb) during pregnancy can result in abdominal distension. Pressure from the abdomen pushing into the chest may make

39
breathing more difficult and pressure within the abdomen may decrease the appetite. NOTE: It is important to recognize abdominal distension because it can be a symptom of potentially lifethreatening diseases and should be investigated thoroughly.
16. Bloody Diarrhoea Blood in the faeces can either appear as “melena” which makes the stools appear black and tarry is the presence suggests digested blood in the faeces. Melena is different from fresh blood in the stool (hematochezia). Bleeding into the colon or rectum appears as fresh blood in the stool. Your veterinarian should evaluate bloody diarrhoea as soon as possible.
17. Bloody Urine Hematuria is the presence of red blood cells in the urine. It may be gross (visible to the naked eye) or microscopic. There are several possible causes including bacterial infections, cancer, stones in the urinary tract.
18. Bite Wounds Bite wounds are often the result when two animals engage in a fight or aggressive play. Bite wounds, which may only appear as a small puncture wound in the skin, can actually be quite extensive. Once the tooth penetrates the skin, severe damage can occur to the underlying tissues without major skin damage. Some wounds may appear deceptively
40
DOG WORLD January 2020
minor but may have the potential to be life threatening, depending on the area of the body bitten. All bite wounds should receive veterinary attention.
19. Bloody Vomit Vomiting blood can include fresh blood (which is bright red) or partially digested blood (which has the appearance of brown coffee grounds). There are a variety of causes of vomiting blood and the effects on the animal are also variable. Some are subtle and minor ailments, while others are severe or life threatening.
20. Lethargy or Weakness Lethargy is a state of drowsiness, inactivity, or indifference in which there are delayed responses to external stimuli such as auditory (sound), visual (sight), or tactile (touch) stimuli. Lethargy is a non-specific sign associated with many possible underlying systemic disorders. It may have little to no impact on the affected individual; however its presence may represent severe or life-threatening illness. Lethargy of more than a day’s duration should not be ignored, and should be addressed, especially if it persists.
21. Pale Gums Pale gums or mucous membranes can indicate blood loss or “shock”. The possible causes for either blood loss or shock are life-threatening and thus should be evaluated immediately.
