President’s Message

2020 is living up to expectations with lots of challenges happening already. It has been a busy couple of months ranging from some negatives in social media through to some very successful February initiatives that have included a DQ Planning Day, our Paws Aids Charity Shows, the very first Trick Dog Tests held at the great indoor facility at Morayfield, a breed specialty open show day and the first round of all breeds shows at Durack and in country centres. And how wonderful to have had good rain in South East Qld and in other regions of Qld. We are not complaining but to go from an extended drought period to floods in many areas has a quite biblical quality about it. A big thank you to all who donated items for the container kindly donated and transported by Kent Removals from our Durack Sportsgrounds to Dogs Victoria at Bulla for the benefit of Dogs Victoria members impacted by the fires. It was so good to read on 14 February that all fires in NSW were finally under control. The President of our national body, the Australian National Kennel Council (ANKC), Mr Hugh Gent, is heavily involved in his local Rural Fire Brigade and he recently told me that their role had shifted from firefighting duties to flood relief work. Our thoughts are with all families that have been impacted by the extreme summer events. Mr Bill Smith and I attended the first 2020 ANKC meeting on 8 February. The board of the ANKC is comprised of representatives from all our equivalent States and Territory in Australia. There are some good national initiatives on the agenda and I look forward to sharing some of these initiatives and other outcomes with members in due course. That board is looking at progressing an effective national communications strategy to increase our profile in the wider community and with government at all levels. We have so much dog expertise in our ranks and so many good dog stories to share with the wider community. On the Sunday the Board saw a presentation from Tara King that highlighted potential communications opportunities for the ANKC and our State bodies.

DQ Strategic Planning Day We had an excellent DQ planning day on 2 February facilitated by Tara King. Tara has had a diverse media, marketing and production background that has included substantive work for Nova, Foxtel and Weather Station as well as with Monty Roberts horse events and Cesar Milan. Based in Sydney, she is passionate about our dog world and has donated her time and effort to assisting Dogs Qld in our wider planning and branding initiatives. The day was very productive and I am looking forward to sharing outcomes with the wider membership in due course. We were limited in numbers but had a good slice of board, office and members from many of our disciplines. The goal of the day was to identify the key strategies for the next financial period and to prioritise a range of tactical ideas to be explored further. During the course of the day key working teams were assigned around these key projects for further development. Over these next three months we are looking to working groups meeting to further develop these strategies. This will be a period when the Board and management will be finalising the forthcoming budget. A fresh strategic plan will be distributed to members for feedback by mid this year with an action plan consolidated soon after this consultation phase. So, we have lots happening in a very positive way. A big thankyou to Tara and to all those members who are committing time and effort to help develop a positive blueprint for our dog world for 2020 and years to come.

The Australian Silky Terrier

DOG WORLD March 2020

Many different theories have been given over the years regarding the origin of the Australian Silky Terrier. The true origin is slightly clouded because little if any records exist from the late 19th century when the Silky first appeared. But most people agree it originated in Sydney when breeders crossed the Australian Terrier with the Yorkshire Terrier. Breeders discovered in their litters, a smaller dog than the Australian Terrier and a larger one than the Yorkshire Terrier, possessing many characteristics of both breeds. To many breeders this new dog was of no value, but to others, the dog had attractions and so the breed evolved. Originally, they were called a Sydney Silky but in 1959 the Australian National Kennel Council approved and adopted a standard for the breed and changed the name to the Australian Silky Terrier. During the drafting of the standard the Silkies were weighed, measured in height and size, colour was defined as blue and tan or grey blue and tan and body conformation was defined. The Australian Silky Terrier is the only Australian Toy breed! It is to be remembered that the Australian Silky Terrier is a Toy dog with Terrier characteristics and not a Terrier with Toy characteristics.

define the ideal animal of the breed. But what makes an Australian Silky Terrier stand out from other terriers? The coat is one of the glamour features (but not the most important) – fine, glossy and of a silky texture. The length of the coat must not impede the dogs’ movement. It is a single coat and won’t shed hair all over the furniture and with minimum coat care, will not emit a doggy odour. Plus, an added benefit is the hair is hypoallergenic. Now the colour is one of the most important aspects of the breed and probably the hardest to achieve. Puppies are born black and tan and mature into their adult colour by the age of 18 months. All shades of blue and tan are acceptable but the richer the colours and more clearly defined the better.

Appearance

They are compact, moderately low set, of medium length with a refined structure but have sufficient substance to suggest the ability to hunt and kill domestic rodents. Silkies display terrier characteristics, embodying keen alertness, activity and soundness. All pedigree dogs have a breed standard, which are created to help

Personality

Dr Sara Pitts BVSc. (Hons I), Dr Courtney Fuller BVSc. and Marnie Scheiwe BAppsc at Rosewood Vet Service are now offering Canine Reproduction services including:

A toy with terrier characteristics and an outgoing personality, they are somewhat impatient to get on with life, never wishing to waste a moment. As with most terriers they need firm discipline and tenacity could be mistaken for stubbornness. Their willingness and desire to please usually wins through and response to praise and instructive patience will win the day. Their natural good humour will aid in training and they are natural show-offs. They are a great mouser when given the opportunity and always the self-appointed watchdog. That’s not to say they would not take up the opportunity to settle beside you or on your lap and help you rest as the Silky loves company! The Silky’s natural good humour also aids in training for obedience and agility and excels when given the opportunity.

PETS OF

Government House

Office of the Queensland Governor

While at first thought pets may not be ideally suited to the hectic pace of vice-regal life or to the fine furnishings of a heritage-listed estate, there is a proud tradition of canine residents at Government House in Queensland long before the appointment in February this year of Gavel Vice-Regal Dog! The records of Old Government House reveal that each of the 11 governors who lived at Gardens Point had at least one pet — and Lord Lamington’s menagerie included (as well as a kangaroo and a cassowary!) an Irish terrier called Torrocks, a chow named Ting Gow, and Bousquir, a Scottish terrier. Queensland’s second Governor Sir Samuel Blackall’s pooch was named Soda.

SIR JOHN AND LADY LAVARACK WALK MONTY AROUND THE GOVERNMENT HOUSE ESTATE Image courtesy of the State Library of Queensland.

The fondness for Scotties continued at Fernberg under Sir John and Lady Lavarack, with their much-loved Monty being buried in a shaded spot on the estate. A plaque records that the six-yearold went ‘to the Happy Hunting Grounds’ on 1 November, 1953. In 1960, another garden plot was assigned to Bengie, the faithful friend and companion of Sir Henry and Lady Abel-Smith. And Gavel isn’t the first of his breed to call Fernberg home; Ms Leneen Forde’s dog George was also a German shepherd.

GAVEL AT GOVERNMENT HOUSE

While no residents of Fernberg were able to match the Lamingtons in their exotic selection of resident pets, the Lavaracks were instrumental in arranging for the noted naturalist, David Fleay, to bring two very special Australian animals to the house in 1954 for the interest of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II during her stay. For the Royal audience, Penny the Platypus and Winkie the Wombat travelled to Fernberg where Penny was placed in a white enamel bathtub, surrounded by potted greenery, on the eastern balcony.

CPR As a dog owner, it is your responsibility to do everything you can, to ensure you give your dog the best chance of survival after experiencing a medical emergency. If your dog has a cardiac arrest, which means their heart stops beating, and in turn they stop breathing, would you know what to do? You might say it’s all good…..I have a Vet down the road; my daughter is a Vet; my son is a Vet Tech…..and this may be so, but if your dog suffers a cardiac arrest, you literally only have 3 to 4 minutes before it is too late to save them. The only way your dog has a chance of survival is if you administer CPR immediately; and continue to provide CPR until you hand your dog over to advanced life support such as a mobile emergency Vet or to the Vet surgery.

What is CPR?

1

Check Airway:

When you open your dog’s mouth can you see anything blocking the airway? You need to provide the best chance of air getting into the dogs lungs when delivering artificial respiration (AR). Is there something lodged in the airway, is there food or vomit. If there is something stuck in their throat use a pair of tweezers, forceps or swipe your finger to help remove.

CPR is Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation; it is a medical response to cardiac arrest.

Make sure you do not push the object deeper into throat.

CPR involves a combination of continuous cycles of compression of the dog’s chest and the administration of expired air from your mouth into their nose, otherwise known as artificial respiration (AR).

2

The purpose of CPR is to manually assist with blood circulation and oxygenation and the goal is to preserve your dog’s life until advanced life support can be sought. It is recommended that all dog owners undertake training in artificial respiration and cardo pulmonary resusitation

12

DOG WORLD March 2020

Check breathing:

There are a number of ways to determine if your dog is breathing: • Look for the rise and fall of the chest; • Listen for breath sounds by placing your ear up against their mouth; or • Wet your finger and place near dog’s nose to see if you feel air If breathing is present, do not do CPR

3

Check circulation (heart beat):

• Feel for a pulse. Check for pulse at femoral location (place two fingers in the groove between the muscles of inner thigh to feel pulse). If a pulse is present, do not do CPR. If no pulse begin CPR.

If you know what your dog looks like when they are well then you know what it looks like when they are not!

Begin CPR • Lay dog on their right side, on a flat firm surface; straighten neck gently to extend airway. • Pull the tongue forward so that the end of the tongue slightly sits past the front teeth and softly close the mouth. • Keeping the mouth closed and the neck straightened, place your hands around the snout and your mouth over the nose creating a secure seal. • Provide 2 breaths. Consider the size of the dog; when providing breaths, you want the chest to rise and fall to mimic the natural rise and fall of your dogs breathing;

Follow the rule for human CPR: Adult – X Large dog, Young Adult – Med Dog, Child – Small dog; and Baby – puppy) • Place palms of your hands where your dog’s left elbow touches chest when elbow is bent (approximately middle of ribcage). For smaller dogs and puppies, you can use the one-handed technique: Wrap your hand around the sternum directly over the heart and squeeze. For barrel-chested dogs (e.g. bulldogs), lay dog on back. • Push the chest down ¼ to ⅓ of its depth at a speed of 100–120 compressions per minute. • After every 30 compressions, pull tongue forward so tongue pokes out between front teeth; hold the mouth shut (make sure it’s completely closed), hands around snout, and deliver 2 rescue breaths; then return to compressions. Repeat until dog is breathing on its own; is handed over to the vet; or when you are physically unable to continue. Small dog: Compress 1.3 cm (½ inch) Medium dog: Compress 2.5 cm (1 inch) Large dog: Compress 3.8 cm (1.5 inch)

Weight Pull Weight pulling is a dog sport involving a dog pulling a cart or sled loaded with weight a short distance across dirt/gravel, grass, carpet, or snow. It is a modern adaptation of freighting, in which dogs were used as freight animals to move cargo. Many breeds participate in this sport, with dogs being separated into classes by weight. Sled dog and bull breeds excel within their respective weight classes, having been historically bred to pull sleds and carts as working dogs, respectively. What do I need for Weight Pull?

Weight Classes?

* Collar & Lead * Chair for comfort * Water for your dog * Crate for your dog * Weight Pull Harness

15 to < 27kg Class 27 to <36kg Class 36 to <45kg Class 45kg and over If your dog does not have ANKC Pedigree Papers, ask one of our Committee Members how to obtain ANKC Associate Register status.

The Club will have a loan harness, if you wish to continue to compete you will be required to purchase your own harness. Harnesses can be ordered from Wind Chill in South Australia

How is a Weight Pull Competiton judged? All dogs are required to pull a cart a distance of 5m on one of the surfaces listed below, at increasing weight increments. Ÿ Natural ~ Grass, Sand or other naturally occuring material Ÿ Artificial ~ Any surface that has been levelled and compacted eg concrete, asphalt, timber, compacted rubble Ÿ Snow ~ Snow or Sleet of a sufficient depth to maintain dog and trolley weight.

Before each trial is started, all dogs are weighed.... This weight will tell you what pull weight your dog must achieve to get a qualified pull. Successful Pull Weight requirement. Depending on the surface each dog is required to pull a set times their body weight for the full 5m within 1 minute. Natural/ Snow Surface ~ Pull 5m at 8x body weight. Artificial Surface ~ Pull 5m at 12x body weight. For example; a 30kg dog will need to pull 240kg on a Natural/ Snow Surface and 360kg on a Artificial Surface. All breeds can compete in Weight Pull, there are Chihuahua’s competing, as well as larger breeds. As this sport is (body) weight to weight ratio, size does not matter!!! ORD STAFF SHIRE T

Therapy Dog Realities Craig A Murray, Empower Assistance Dogs

The term service dog covers many applications from Guide Dog for vision impairment to the most responsible for personal safety. Hearing dogs for hearing impairment is usually the most covert, often having no visual sign of the recipients’ disability and can be mistaken for the person not having legal rights of public access. The assistance dog is suited for persons with either physical or mental disabilities, possess physical and mental disabilities or any other service dog requirements. This can include hearing or visual impairments with the needs for a multi-tasked dog to cover several other applications such as trauma, detection for allergies, serious medical conditions or PTSD. Under the assistance banner is notably the most diverse and challenging range of needs of all the service providing dogs. It is a well recognised fact that all types of service dogs don’t only offer help on a physical level with tasks that allow the recipients far greater freedom (including public accessibility or a greater level of self-reliance in most cases). These dogs also offer their partners companionship, hope, comfort and often personal interaction satisfaction that they may not have been able to acquire without a canine partner. When we placed our first assistance dog we received an eye opening culture shock of seeing the recipient traverse a regular route, taking 40 minutes and having almost no personal interactions with passers-by. Then with her new assistance dog, on the same trip and route, there was a complete turn-around taking nearly double the time due to personal interactions that the public instigated. Enjoyment was gained for this recipient which brightened her life remarkably – she thrived on interactions that used to pass her by without the dog as a conversation starter. I believe political correctness instilled fear into many people and they were worried to converse in case they were in breach of some rule or law. The common denominator of having a dog gave those who would like to interact a great ‘in’ point for personal interaction.

Therapy dogs is another extremely broad and diverse part of the ‘helping dog world’ covering so many areas. The list will continue to grow as the needs and experiences gained forge new frontiers. All therapy dogs (regardless of not enjoying any further or specific rights other than those of pet dogs) must possess extremely sound temperaments enhanced by correctly timed and targeted early social exposure to ensure they have no fears or phobias. They must be able to enjoy challenging and changing environments and situations – especially being able to work with other canine team members with no reactivity, fear or aggression. They must also enjoy human interaction without being overbearing or obnoxious (including the very young and the very old) and they must not pose

any risks whilst providing interactions. They need sound obedience skills but more importantly, have immaculate manners. They must be able to traverse stairs, ride in lifts and in some cases traverse escalators or travel in golf buggies safely – depending on the environment they are to work within. Therapy dog work can be broken down into 2 main groups. Facility therapy dogs are owned by a person utilising the dog in a facility in which they are usually a part of, its operations as an employee or practitioner or are aligned with the facilities providing practice. These dogs are generally owned by the person whom handles and owns the dog or has a smaller support team that assists in the provision of visits. The owner oversees some aspects of the other handlers support and input. Places this can occur are schools and special education units, hospitals, hospices, mental facilities, medical facilities, legal facilities, aged care, airports and workplaces of all

types (especially those that have very responsible or stressful aspects to their workload). The second type is the Visiting therapy dog which is generally owned and handled by its owner. These dogs can also be used in the same types of places but usually do this on an ad hoc schedule of what each individual client wants and needs. These dogs have to be capable of enjoying ever-changing situations and challenges more so than the dog that only operates in limited environments. There are some dogs so suitable they enjoy these tasks so much that multiple handlers can work with them. From our involvement in therapy dogs before the year 2000, our oversees education in the disability dog world taught us how much dogs can assist, especially not only physically but with mental well-being. We are strong advocates of therapy dogs and the ever-increasing ways they add value to people’s lives.

We utilise our experiences and education from being certified as guide, hearing and assistance dog trainers. We seek the best suited people and dogs to offer the greatest experience for those who enlist a therapy dog and/or handler team from us. We are grateful that handlers receive so much joy and gratification from this work and are extremely aware that whilst this is a necessity for great relationships for both dogs and handlers, the true task is to offer others joy, happiness and hope that can lighten their load, make life a little easier and pleasant to face. For us, we usually prefer the dog and handler team to also be a life partner team. We are always on the lookout for suitable teams to provide this really important role for so many people whom would benefit from their visits. If you would love to volunteer and have a wonderfully social dog that meets the above criteria, please contact Empower Assistance Dogs via email – admin@empowerassistancedogs.org.au.

Cath Buckley, Cumbydene Stumpies We, Cumbydene Kennels, were invited by Wayne Carter of Waycrest Kennels to attend an Australia Day function at the Warra Hotel, Warra on Sunday 26 January 2020 and accepted with pleasure. Off we went with four Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dogs (ASTCD) – 2 bitches and 2 dogs. The day was very hot – the dogs not only enjoyed some shade but also the attention from children and adults. We were not that surprised to find we were asked the usual questions on the dogs including ‘What breed is that?’ AND ‘Why did you cut the tail off?’ We were able to give a brief explanation of the breeds’ characteristics and Wayne also explained that the dogs are born with stumpy tails which can vary from a stub to five inches in length. It was a great chance to have the 2 Australian breeds together to enable people to see the very real differences – especially with stumpies and cattle dogs side by side! The stumpies certainly lapped up the attention on the day, even wandering into the bar briefly (on leads of course!!!) to enjoy pats and Moon Dancer showed us she still loved the camera! All in all, it was a good day to show the dogs to adults and children alike. We feel we were able to extend the knowledge of this breed on the day which is really needed. We are a rare breed unfortunately so any chance to share information on these dogs is definitely worthwhile. Thanks to Wayne for this opportunity and to Jim at Warra Hotel.

Canine hepatitis

Infectious canine hepatitis is a very serious condition caused by a highly infectious virus that affects the liver. It can develop extremely quickly in puppies and dogs. What is infectious canine hepatitis? Infectious canine hepatitis is a very serious condition worldwide, caused by a highly infectious virus that affects the liver.

A puppy or dog with a more severe case of infectious canine hepatitis may also have the following symptoms:

It can develop extremely quickly in puppies and dogs. Mortality rates in dogs with canine hepatitis range from 10 – 30% and is typically highest in very young dogs.

• Red dots on the skin

What are the symptoms of infectious canine hepatitis? A puppy or dog with infectious canine hepatitis will show a variety of different symptoms. You should always look for: • Fever • Lethargy • Diarrhoea • Vomiting • An enlarged liver • Abdominal pain

• Bruising of the skin • Swollen and enlarged lymph nodes What causes infectious canine hepatitis? Infectious canine hepatitis is transmitted through the blood, nasal discharge, saliva, urine, or faeces of infected dogs. It’s a virus that can survive for a long time in canine communities and is difficult to remove as it is resistant to lipid solvents such as ether, as well as to acid and formalin. Can my puppy be vaccinated against infectious canine hepatitis? Infectious canine hepatitis can be prevented with the right vaccination. It’s therefore so important that they get the necessary jabs at the right age.

DOG WORLD March 2020

In most instances puppies usually begin a vaccination programme at the age of six to eight weeks, with the infectious canine hepatitis vaccination given at between seven to nine weeks.

Max,

Your puppy will be given their first booster for infectious canine hepatitis at 11 – 13 weeks. Only after this first booster will your puppy be protected. How do I know if my puppy needs the vaccine? The vaccines provided to puppies consist of mandatory and recommended. The vaccine for infectious canine hepatitis is one of the mandatory vaccines and so will always be given to your puppy as part of the vaccination programme put in place by your vet. Will the vaccination always cover my dog for canine hepatitis? The first injections administered for infectious canine hepatitis will not cover them permanently. It is important to make sure that your puppy is given booster injections throughout their life. Your puppy will be required to have another booster at 15 months and then annually moving forward to ensure they are vaccinated against the infection. Speak to your vet as they will be able to help you choose a vaccination programme best suited to the needs of your puppy, depending on where they’ll be spending time and the activities they’ll be doing. What to do if I think my puppy is suffering? If your puppy presents any of the symptoms of infectious canine hepatitis it’s important to contact a vet immediately. They will carry out a number of blood tests, antibody tests and immuno-fluorescence scanning to determine whether your puppy is infected and recommend the best course of treatment. Vaccinating your puppy against infectious canine hepatitis and other conditions is one of the most important preventative measures you can take to ensure the health of your new puppy throughout their life. If you are unsure about this vaccine or have any questions relating to the vaccinations your puppy needs, speak to your vet.

DOG WORLD March 2020

The Chihuahua Helen Bright It was obvious from the day Max was born he was a little dog who did things his way. After nearly an hour after his two sisters and brother had been delivered, out pops Max in his own time. At shows he was afraid of nothing, thinking everyone was his best friend (even the biggest dogs). His television career began with a segment on Totally Wild where he loved all the attention. He later auditioned with five other Chihuahuas for the part of Bruiser in the Empire Theatre’s musical, Legally Blonde. He got the part even though he relieved himself on the director’s shoe. Four months later, the Ekka held little interest for Max. He was bored with the whole conformation show scene - no lights, dancing, music, attention and applause. His next experience was joining in a yoga segment on Studio 10 with Joe Hilderbrand. A group had come in with their dogs to do ‘Yoga with Dogs’. Joe spotted Max and took him on camera where he almost stole the show. Denise Drysdale wanted to take him home. Max has met so many people from rock stars, TV personalities to politicians. Every day, he looks at me as if to say, When’s my next adventure?
