President’s Message

“N

one of us have a crystal ball and I am no exception. I don’t think any of us contemplated that the unprecedented challenges over the summer period with fires across our nation could be followed in quick succession by the “ Wuhan virus” or as it is known as the Corona Virus or COVID-19. The international impact of this pandemic is being compared to the Spanish Flu just over 100 years ago that lasted from January 1918 to December 1920 with devastating consequences. Of course medical technology has advanced from those days and it looks like the development of a vaccine will happen not too far down the track. In the meantime it is so important that we try to stay well and to that end take stringent personal hygiene measures with regular hand washing, keeping a social distance from others (although hugs are still on with close family!) and basically stay closer to home. Do listen to government advice on a day to day basis. Just this week we have progressed on Monday from not having events with more than 500 people to Wednesday when gatherings of more than 100 people in an internal space have been banned. It is in this context that on Tuesday we postponed the AGM for the Canine Control Council (Qld) Ltd from 7.30pm on Wednesday 25 March to 7.30pm on Wednesday 27 May 2020. This is within the legislative timeframe but will be open to review depending on the advisories relating to COVID-19. In these circumstances it is most likely that the AGM will satisfy formal requirements but will be as minimal as possible e.g without post meeting social interaction at a supper. We may also be required to limit the number of persons attending the meeting. We will keep you

4

DOG WORLD April 2020

informed of developments in this regard and a formal notice regarding the meeting will be issued in due course. Members would be aware that all our dog bodies have taken a national approach with the cancellation of dog shows, sporting events and ancillary meetings and gatherings at least until the end of April 2020 with ongoing reviews occurring after a number of weeks. It is the abiding concern of your board that the health and welfare of all our members, staff and their families be protected. I know that the cancellation of these events is a huge disappointment for many but this pales into insignificance when one sees the extent of the impact of this COVID-19 internationally. The closure of borders internationally and the imminent shutdown of airlines is something we have never experienced previously. And this of course also impacts directly on judges contracted from overseas and interstate. Beyond the period of DQ show and event cancellation it will be a matter for individual clubs to determine whether to cancel or postpone a show or event. And of course, any postponement will depend on the availability of an alternative date. The office will work with clubs to sort through these arrangements. Please remember that all our club secretaries are volunteers and this unprecedented disruption to our show and event calendar has added stress and complexity to their role. So please be patient and provide support where you can in your clubs. We have already seen the cancellation this week of a number of Agricultural Shows, including Brookfield, due to the ruling on gathering of 500 or more. I am sure you will see this trend continue.

The wellbeing of our staff is another paramount consideration for our Board. At the emergency Board Meeting on Monday 16 March it was decided to keep the office open for the foreseeable future. We ask that members restrict their attendance at the office to necessary visits and that they comply with the restrictions that are being implemented. The cancellation of shows and events coming into our peak mid-year period will of course have a negative effect on DQ income. We are looking at strictly managing expenses and our staff are being very cooperative in reducing hours of work and in some instances taking leave. Although these are difficult times, I have no doubt that we will come through this period successfully. It is a time to look out for each other and to support each other where possible. And it is a time to enjoy our dogs and quieter times at home.

MEET THE OLD ENGLISH SHEEPDOG

Ann Cassidy (on behalf of the Old English Sheepdog Club of Qld)

Although widely admired in showrings around the world for their glamorous coat, the Old English Sheepdog or Dulux Dog as he is affectionately referred to here in Australia, is so much more. DOG WORLD April 2020

9

The Old English Sheepdog is a wonderful and loyal companion, a smart and agile Agility and Obedience dog and a very capable Herding dog, as well as a standout show dog. They are happy performing any or all of the above but are most happy when their family are also involved. They are also happy to sit on the lounge watching TV. They are basically a hardy dog. Health problems within the breed have included hip dysplasia – a common joint disease in many breeds. Responsible breeders X-ray their breeding stock.

10

DOG WORLD April 2020

As a Show Dog ... we have promoted the coat over the years to give the glorious fullness and outline we see today in the showring. The show dog requires consistent grooming, coat preparation and judicious trimming. They need to be fed well, exercised correctly and most importantly, trained for the ring. Anyone looking to show an Old English Sheepdog successfully needs to be dedicated to the work involved and educated in specific breed conformation. Exhibitors who are new to the showring should visit shows, talk to breeders and take time to pick the right puppy. As with all breeds, not all puppies are show puppies. It is advisable to find a mentor who will help to train you and your dog.

Away from the showring ... this breed is being seen much more often than in the past in the Obedience, Agility and Herding arenas. Many owners like to follow a discipline with their dogs and this should be encouraged. The advantage of competing in these disciplines is that the dog does not need to be coated. Clipped down is more comfortable for all concerned including the dog. The working ability and instincts demonstrated in these disciplines go back to his history as a drovers dog in England. The Dulux Dog ... since the 1960’s in England the Old English Sheepdog has been identified as the flag carrier for Dulux paints. We are very lucky here in Australia to have been asked to carry on this tradition and the breed clubs in all states supply dogs regularly for Dulux Promotions. It is not uncommon to visit a hardware or paint store and find an Old English Sheepdog entertaining in the paint section. This partnership has helped the clubs over the years to access funds for international judges, trophies, breed education, welfare and functions for club members and their dogs. The companion dog .... many of our breed have owners who have been in the breed for many years and have had several OES. Their dogs are their companions/stay-at-home dogs and are very happy that way! Some of these dogs are kept in full coat, or may be clipped down or in a puppy/ bear cut.

DOG WORLD April 2020

The Old English Sheepdog is a happy, outgoing dog, very excited about meeting, running and playing with other dogs, particularly others of their own variety. To that end the club and its’ hard working committee run Fundays at fenced parks where all are welcome. We often have 25 or more Old English Sheepdogs. The events are catered and everyone (dogs and people) have a great time. Unfortunately this can be a high maintenance breed particularly coat wise and we do get the occasional welfare dog. The club has an active welfare scheme to cater to these needs. Fortunately these days the breed does not suffer from overpopulation which was a serious problem in the 1980/1990’s. Puppies are adorable and lovable. They are black and white fluff balls. Always source a puppy where the breeder is happy to supply all health testing results. Training should start at an early age....table training for grooming and lead and simple obedience training for control. Puppies are eager to please and quick to learn but can be stubborn on occasion. They do respond well to Puppy Preschool and treats always work! If the owner intends to keep their dog clipped down, it is advisable to start while they are young as the clippers can be a daunting and traumatic experience first time round. Club members are always happy to answer questions and offer advice. Anyone who has not

12

DOG WORLD April 2020

enjoyed this breed before would be well advised to contact the club and it’s members before embarking on their journey into our wonderful breed. Finally, this breed is not defined by coat alone, but by the owners ability for interaction with their dog. It is not a breed for everyone. A happy Old English Sheepdog is NOT one that is confined to the back yard. It is happiest being an equal member of the family! Just ask him or her!

With Easter right around the corner, it’s that time of year again when we like to overindulge on one of our favourite foods: chocolate. Unfortunately, that also means it’s the time of year when we see chocolate toxicity in our beloved dogs. Theobromine and caffeine are the main compounds in chocolate that cause toxicity. If a dog consumes a low dose of these substances, they will vomit and have diarrhoea. They may also begin to drink and urinate excessively. This can cause them to be generally unwell and can eventually lead to dehydration. At higher doses, their heart rate will increase and they can become hyperactive which can lead to elevated body

temperatures (hyperthermia). Muscle tremors/ spasms, seizures, heart arrhythmias and cardiac arrest can then follow, which will lead to death in a very short time. The toxic dose for chocolate in dogs is surprisingly small and depends on the size of the dog, the amount of chocolate eaten and the type of chocolate. The more bitter the chocolate, the

DOG WORLD April 2020

15

higher the concentration of theobromine and caffeine. Therefore, cooking and dark chocolate are the most toxic types of chocolate. White chocolate doesn’t contain a lot of these toxins, however it is still high in sugar which can upset their stomachs. Baked goods (such as chocolate cake or chocolate icing) that contain cocoa powder can also be toxic to dogs. As little as 5g of dark chocolate in a small dog can cause a severe reaction. If your dog has eaten any chocolate at all, it is important to contact your local vet or emergency centre as soon as possible. The first thing that they will do is to induce your dog to vomit. This is to reduce the amount of toxins that can be absorbed and hopefully reduce the severity of the toxicity. It is not recommended that you induce vomiting at home. Many of the home remedies for vomiting can also be fatal to dogs, so it is important that this procedure is done by a veterinarian. The ongoing treatment will vary depending on the severity of the signs displayed. Hospitalisation and intravenous fluid therapy to flush their system of the toxins are generally required. While chocolate toxicity is fairly well known by dog owners, there are some other toxicities that we also see at this time of year that aren’t as well publicised. Grapes, sultanas and raisins (especially chocolate coated raisins!) are highly toxic to dogs.

The first signs of a grape or raisin toxicity are vomiting, anorexia and diarrhoea. Dogs often become lethargic and may show signs of abdominal pain and these signs can go on for days to weeks. The most deadly part of this toxicity is its effects on the kidney. It is unknown at this stage exactly what the toxin is and how it causes its effects, however clinically we see the kidneys become damaged and then stop functioning entirely. This results in little to no urine production, a build up of waste products in the patient’s bloodstream and ultimately death. As the exact toxin is unknown, the toxic dose of grapes/raisins hasn’t been determined at this stage. There are reports that as few as 4 or 5 grapes have caused the death of an 8kg dog. Treatment of these cases can be difficult. If your dog has recently eaten grapes, you should contact your local vet or emergency centre as soon as possible. As with chocolate toxicity, the first thing that is done is to induce vomiting to remove as much of the toxin as possible. Activated charcoal may be administered to try and reduce the absorption of the toxin as well. Blood testing, hospitalisation and aggressive intravenous fluid therapy is often required for these patients and the prognosis can be guarded to poor depending on the severity of signs. Another important toxin to dogs that is found in human foods is xylitol. Xylitol is an artificial sweetener found in many different foods and products, such as toothpaste, vitamin tablets/gummies, chewing gum, peanut butter, sugar-free lollies and fruit drinks. While it is not toxic to humans (and some studies are showing that it has a range of beneficial health effects for humans) it is highly toxic to dogs.

Grapes are highly toxic to dogs

16

DOG WORLD April 2020

There are two main ways that xylitol causes toxicity in dogs. Because it is an artificial sweetener, a dog’s pancreas will mistake xylitol for real sugar. The pancreas responds to normal sugar intake by releasing insulin so the sugar can be stored in the body. The problem is xylitol doesn’t have the calories

that sugar does and the insulin release just reduces the real sugar levels in the bloodstream. This causes the blood glucose levels to drop very quickly which causes vomiting, weakness, incoordination and disorientation, tremors and even seizures. Signs can begin within half an hour of ingesting a product containing xylitol and may last for greater than twelve hours.

The other problem with xylitol is it will destroy the liver cells in dogs. This takes longer to happen then the blood sugar drop and can vary in severity from a short period of being unwell to acute liver failure which can lead to death. The liver is a very important organ and is responsible for detoxifying the body and the production of important substances such as clotting factors. Often severe cases will have internal bleeding as the liver cannot produce clotting factors. At this stage we do not know exactly how xylitol causes liver damage. A dose of 75-100mg/kg of xylitol is enough to cause low blood glucose levels in dogs, and a dose of 500mg/kg can cause liver damage. One piece of gum that contains 1g of xylitol is enough to cause toxicity to a 10kg dog. If you are concerned that your dog has eaten a product containing xylitol, it is important to contact your local vet or emergency centre as soon as possible. If they have only recently eaten the product, vomiting will be induced. Blood tests to check glucose levels and liver function will be performed and then most patients will be hospitalised on a glucose infusion and continually monitored for at least a 24hr period, depending on the severity of the signs. Often repeat blood tests will be required over the next few days and symptomatic therapy given as required. These are just a few of the common toxins found in human foods. The main goal is to avoid our beloved canines ingesting them at all as prevention is much better than a cure in these cases, particularly as we don’t have antidotes to the majority of toxins. Hopefully, both you and your dogs have a wonderful Easter holiday that is emergency free!

THE WAR ANIMAL MEMORIAL and War Dogs Sharron Ford – RSL Forest Lake PTSD Dogs The War Animal Memorial was dedicated and unveiled in February 2018. Since this dedication we have held annual ANZAC Day services at dusk to coincide with Dogs Queensland Show days. Each year more numbers have been able to pay their respects by laying wreaths at the memorial and acknowledging the lives lost of the animals not returned from active duty. ‘Rex’ has kept a watchful eye over the grounds at Dogs Queensland since its dedication.

Dogs played crucial roles in WWI. In fact they proved to be just as dependable as soldiers. Their jobs were diverse in combat and some of their roles included sniffing out enemies, carrying supplies, finding the wounded, delivering messages and first aid supplies as well as providing companionship and boosting the troops’ morale. During WWII and the Korean War, dogs were used extensively. In Vietnam 11 dogs were used and in Afghanistan we lost a number with some ‘Killed In Action’, one missing in action. One of the plaques on the memorial highlights the Vietnam dogs and one highlights the Afghan dogs. Dogs also helped carry supplies, pulling small carts of military supplies and ammunition over the difficult terrain. Over a million dogs died during the First World War. ‘Elevation of the Senses’ commemorates the vital role and contribution of Explosive Detection Dogs and their handlers in war

COVID-19 in pets and how pet owners should prepare for a potential lockdown

Dr Claire Stevens (Gold Coast Vet) The single case of a (coronavirus patient’s) pet dog that tested positive for COVID-19 in Hong Kong has grabbed global attention. There are conversations among veterinarian’s internationally about the best practices in dealing with panicked pet owners who present with their pets to surrender them or worse to euthanise them, from fear of contracting the virus from their pet. To avoid pet owner hysteria from taking hold, it is best to know the facts: • At present there is no evidence that pet animals can be infected with COVID-19 virus and get sick; or that they can be a source of infection to people. • It is true that one dog was found to have a ‘weak positive’ to COPVID-19. This does not mean the dog was suffering from the illness or is contagious. • Remember that ‘being infected’ does not equal ‘being infectious’ and capable of spreading the COVID-19 virus. It is important that we still practice necessary precautionary measures for our safety and that of our pets, including washing our hands thoroughly, after contact with people and pets, avoiding touching our faces and using hand sanitizer regularly. If you are ill with COVID-19, it is recommended that someone else care for your pets if possible. At the very least, ensure you don’t share food with them (not even scraps from dinner), kiss them, share dishes or take them for walks while you are unwell. With the threat of a potential lockdown looming, we also need to make sure we have enough pet essentials to last for 14 days. Make sure you have enough food and medicine. If your pet is soon due to have its annual vaccinations, check with your vet to see if they can have them done early. It’s also a good idea to check if they intend on closing and if so, are the offering an emergency service. Most of all, remain calm, keep informed and stay sensible.

TRACKING and Track & Search There is a myriad of dog sports available to all varieties of dogs but the two which are most in tune with our dog’s natural instincts and drives are Tracking and/or Track & Search. All dogs know how to use their nose. It is just a matter of training the dog to use their sense of smell in the way we need to demonstrate the rules of the sport. (Bush) Tracking is conducted out in our rural regions usually on cattle properties which entail handlers camping over several days. Dogs are required to track people who have become ‘lost’ in the bush with tracks starting at 400m in length and going up to 1200m – 8 levels overall. Tracks are aged from 20 minutes up to 2 hours. Dogs start tracking on someone they know but then move on to unknown tracklayers. The dog also has to find the required number of the 3 ‘articles’ dropped by the tracklayer along the track. Tracks are run as soon as there is enough daylight so handlers are up before dawn. The tracking season is

during the cooler months (winter) to make sure the dogs do not get overheated and to avoid the natural summer wildlife (snakes). There are usually cattle and kangaroos on tracks. To do bush tracking you must enjoy camping in the country, sitting around the campfire, and having your dog get wet and dirty but thoroughly happy. Track & Search is carried out in urban areas using local parks and streets. There are 10 levels with levels 1-3 being in parks, level 4 across parks and streets and levels 5-10 in streets, both in the daylight and at night. Distances range from 800m to 1200m with delays from 1 hour up to 4 hours. The top 2 levels involve the tracklayer getting into a vehicle and being driven for some distance before being dropped off to continue walking the track. Level 1 is done on a known person for the dog but after that all levels use unknown tracklayers. Levels 1-4 have 2 articles on the track, of which, at least 1 must be found. Again, Track and Search is done through the cooler months with tracks being run either as soon as there is daylight, late afternoon or in the night. So, there is no avoiding the pre-dawn rising. The issues dogs have to deal with in Track & Search can include loose dogs, dog walkers, joggers, kids on bikes, babies in strollers, footpath sprinklers, and traffic.

MARCH 2020

To do urban tracking you must enjoy dealing with the general public, sitting around waiting for tracks to age, finding your way around suburbs (in daylight and dark) you have never been in before, and having your dog get wet and dirty but thoroughly happy. Tracking and Track & Search are both open to all breeds of dogs. Dogs must be at least 6 months of age to enter. Dogs may compete in Tracking or Track & Search, either one after the other or both at the same time. However, it is recommended that it is best to concentrate on one to start with until the dog becomes comfortabe in what it is required to do. Clubs which conduct Tracking and/or Track & Search in Queensland are All Breeds Tracking Club, Evergreen Tracking Dog Club Inc, Caboolture Sports Dog Obedience Club, Gympie Dog Obedience Club Inc, Rockhampton Dog Obedience Club Inc, Magpies Mackay & District Obedience Club, Canine Obedience Club of Townsville and Cairns City Kennel Club Inc (Obedience Section). Paw Injuries Joanne Bibby – Fursafe

The Paw There is no question that dog paws take a beating and just like our own feet can be injured or impacted by random events or accidents; dogs can be clumsy and may injure their paw/s from minor slips, trips and falls. However, it is also possible for your dog to experience a serious injury which could potentially cause a permanent disability. It is our job as dog owners to recognise abnormalities to our dog’s paws, and treat them as soon as possible to ensure the injury or condition is not exacerbated by excessive licking, or continued use, and thereby increasing the risk of infection or permanent disability.

Paw Anatomy The paw is made up of the following parts and injury to any or all parts can cause extreme pain and discomfort for your dog: 1. The claw – their nails help with traction and help a dog dig in the ground and tear at prey; 2. Digital pads padding the toes, Metacarpal pad padding the foot, and Metatarsal bones assist with load bearing and shock absorbing when running and jumping; 3. Dew claws – the odd nail found on some dogs which appear to have no use, however it will, if snagged or ripped out, still cause extreme pain; and 4. Carpal pad – the pad behind the foot, helps with skid and traction on a slope or while stopping. Paw pads provide a level of protection: • to bones and joints impacting hard surfaces; • by providing insulation for low to medium temperatures when walking; • to the deep tissue within the paw; and • to the sweat glands which assist in a dog’s cooling process.

Injuries & other Conditions Impact to your dog’s paws can vary from minor to life threatening; it is therefore recommended that all dog owners attend training in wound management to ensure they manage the injury or condition in the most appropriate way.

54

DOG WORLD April 2020

Paw Trauma • Nail loss • Wounds • Sprains / strains • Fractures • Amputations / de-gloving Medical Conditions • Allergic reaction from bites and stings • Cysts, ulcers and other Growths • Fungal and bacterial infections • Ligament damage • Nerve damage • Malnutrition which causes adverse impact on bone health Environmental • Burns from extreme heat conditions • Paw and joint trauma from strenuous activity • Chemical burns from treatment of icy pavements or roads • Burns from frostbite from extreme cold conditions

Safety precautions Sometimes things just happen; it is not always easy to see a hole/s in a park the size of a football field; it is not always easy to anticipate a piece of glass hiding in long grass, however you can take some simple precautions that may reduce the risk of injury when your dog is out and about. • Test road temperature: » Place your bare foot onto the road and see if it is too hot for you, because if it is hot for you then it will likely be for them. If you are wearing shoes place the back of your hand on the road and test for 10 seconds.

» Carry small dogs if too hot; get dogs to walk on the grass where it will be a little cooler or try to limit to shady areas for walking. » Go out early morning or early evening when temperatures are a little cooler and the sun hasn’t had chance to heat up the roads and footpaths.

• Protect from icy surfaces: » Consider investing in a pair of dog booties to protect from the ice and or chemicals / salts used on icy footpaths and roads.

» Keep paw hair short to reduce hair from getting wet and freezing. • Scan a head of the dog walking on a leash. • Consider the surrounding environment; has there been a drought, and if so, there is a higher risk of cracks and holes in the ground; is it a Sunday morning, the night after weekend pub activity, if so there is a greater risk of broken glass on the ground and avoid at all costs. • Is your dog use to exercising at pace when you are jogging on the road or the footpath? » If not, take it easy until they acclimatise, this will reduce the risk of the paw becoming cracked and split. » Exercise early mornings and early evenings to limit running on hot surfaces. • Is your dog regularly groomed? Long nails reduce the traction and causes toes to spread impacting on the paws structure and stability. » Keep nails short » Keep hair short in between toes and pads; this also helps reduce seed build up and potential infection.

• Keep your dog’s foot pads moisturised to help reduce cracking and splitting; this is an excellent time to check for parasites and other abnormalities. • Keep dog from potential falls and access to moving vehicles.

Signs and Symptoms The following signs and symptoms are a general guide, however there are 4 key signs which will help you to start your assessment: 1. Severe bleeding 2. Obsessive licking of the paw 3. Awful smell coming from paw 4. Limping or lameness You may notice initially an issue with one paw but remember there are usually 4 paws and what can affect one can also impact the others. • Obsessively licking and chewing their paw • You may notice that your dog’s paw has an awful smell • Crying or whimpering

• You may notice your dog limping or unwilling to walk on the paw • Bright red and inflamed paws with the top layer of the pad missing • Inflamed lesions / sores with discharge • Swollen toes or pads • Hair loss from burns; this will also smell, you will likely see blisters forming • Lacerations and abrasions causing severe bleeding • Cracked, torn or missing nails • You may notice part of the paw pad missing • Cysts, Ulcers and parasites could be seen between toes

“If you know what healthy looks like, you will know what unhealthy looks like”

Action • Clean wound and remove any foreign objects

• Control bleeding by applying pressure with sterilised wound pad • Apply rolled bandage to secure pad in place • Apply Vet Wrap over the bandage; this keeps bandage dry and stops dog from chewing at the wound • Splint paw if obvious fracture or dog is not self supporting their leg, if there has been nerve damage a dog will not be able to support their leg; secure splint using Vet Wrap or tape but make sure you apply tape either side of wound, never over wound • If the paw is swollen manage with ice; ensure ice or ice pack is wrapped in fabric before placing on wound or place paw into a bowl of cold water, especially if bitten by an ant • For burns, always run cool water over paw for a minimum of 15 minutes to help stop the burning process • If you have a Cone from previous vet treatments then place on dog to stop dog from touching wound or trying to remove bandages • Transport your dog to the Vet for clinical assessment; make sure you wrap your dog when transporting in a blanket or towel to keep warm and support while in the car. • Always manage for Shock and always prepare for potential need of CPR while being transported

Why does my dog eat grass? Petplan Australasia Although it is surprisingly common for dogs to eat grass, owners are still baffled by it. There are many people throwing out their theories into the reasoning behind this strange behaviour; however, no one is truly certain why dogs eat grass. It is likely there is not one simple answer, but a number of answers that explain this strange behaviour. Let’s have a look at the possible reasons in order to understand why our pup may be eating grass.

Nauseous One of the most commonly believed reasons behind dogs eating grass is it that they are doing so when they feel nauseous or has stomach distress. It is believed this is a self-medicating tactic by the dog to relieve their stomach pains or feelings of nausea. If you think this may be the case, a veterinary check is best as it can be something serious such as gastric reflux or bowel disease and therefore needs to be acted upon immediately.

Taste and satisfaction As dogs are natural scavengers and will happily eat up any food you give them, what’s stopping them from just eating human food? It’s possible that dogs find the flavour or texture of grass tasty and therefore seek it out for a snack. There are other theories that grass may release dopamine, therefore rewarding the pup for snacking on grass. If this is the case for your dog, seeking a vet’s advice is best as some may suggest putting them

56

DOG WORLD April 2020

on a high fibre diet in order to keep them away from eating grass.

Boredom As some pets can spend a lot of time outside by themselves, their boredom may lead them to eat grass as a way to pass the time. If you notice your dog eating grass, it may just mean you’re not stimulating them enough either through exercise or mental challenges. Provide them with longer walks, extended play time or even a brand new toy that will keep them distracted for hours.

Generational It is said that as dogs have progressed over the years from their wild ancestors, some of the traits are still with them. As wild dogs would have ingested prey with plant matter in their bowels back in the day, it might be possible that domesticated dogs now seek this plant matter due to genetics. Even though there are a number of theories as to why dogs eat grass, no one is truly certain why they do it. Not to worry though, as many vets consider grass eating as normal behaviour that has no real harm to dogs (unless there are dangerous chemicals such as pesticides). In saying this, keep an eye on your pet at all times as it is imperative to call a vet if they become sick when eating grass as there could be an underlying problem.
