Dogs Queensland has become increasingly aware of Puppy Scam Websites using legitimate Dogs Queensland Registration and Queensland Breeder Identification (BIN) Numbers to sell puppies. Dogs Queensland Registration Numbers are obtained from legitimate websites such as Dogs Queensland or DogzOnline, where they are displayed as required by the Queensland Government.
Please see the Queensland Dog Breeder Fact Sheets for regulations and guidelines for Queensland Dog Breeders.
An example of a typical scam is:
• A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet.
• The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix.
• A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry.
• Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published.
• No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website.
• The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures.
• The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.
• Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix.
• Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate.
• Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct inperson contact with you.
• Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details.
• Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.
• Verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland.
• Ensure communications are made to verified contact details.
• Meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.
• If paying online, use a credit card or PayPal where you have a degree of buyer protection.
• Check website is an established site with a website security certificate.
• Avoid websites without physical address or phone numbers.
• A sk for proof, including ANKC registration papers and veterinary health records for any puppy.
Importantly you should report any suspect sites or advertising to the ACCC ScamWatch website. Please let us know about any suspect websites too by contacting Dogs Queensland on 3252 2661 or by email at info@dogsqueensland.org.au
O“n Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 March 2024, I had the pleasure of attending the Dog Lovers Festival at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The festival allowed our members to showcase our wonderful dog world and the various aspects we enjoy to the public.
There were 33 breed club/breeder stands all manned by passionate volunteers.
Our Marketing and PR Committee went over and above to ensure the event, from a Dogs Queensland perspective, was well organised and supported. Thank you to the Committee for their assistance with the event.
I’d like to acknowledge the extraordinary effort of Jodie Wilshire who hosted the “Ask the Breeder” stage all weekend. Jodie interviewed dozens of breeders providing an opportunity for members of the public to learn valuable information on each breed. Sue Hewinson was brilliant with public inquiries both days, supporting breeders and other volunteers on the Dogs Queensland stand.
Dogs Queensland stand. You were all exceptional!!!
Plans are already underway for next year’s event (to be held on Saturday 1 March and Sunday 2 March 2025). Let’s hope it’s bigger and better so we can do what we do best – come together for the betterment of our dog world!
I hope everyone is getting their entries in for our ANZAC day shows. Dogs Queensland also host a service to recognise the sacrifices made by our service men and women and the animals who served alongside them. The service will be conducted by the Forest Lake Sub-Branch of the RSL. Any profits from the ANZAC show will be donated to the Forest Lake RSL Assistance Dogs Program. This program matches trained service dogs with RSL personnel.
Easter is just around the corner, and I’d like to wish everyone a safe and happy time, whatever you do or wherever you go over the long weekend. ENJOY!!!
I’d also like to thank all those members, committee members, directors, staff and breeders who came along with their beautiful dogs to assist on the ”

Following discussions with the President of the FCI Grooming Commission, Mr Chua Ming-Kok, the Dogs Australia Board of Directors have resolved that a National Canine Grooming Committee be formed to conduct FCI Grooming Competitions. Mrs May Wong who is a Dogs Victoria Member / Exhibitor and is currently the organiser of the Canine Grooming Competitions at the Sydney and Melbourne Royals was appointed Chair of the Committee by the Board. May is a professional groomer herself and highly respected in the sport. The Committee Members will be appointed by the Dogs Australia State and Territory Member Bodies.
In the coming months, the Committee will be formulating Competition Rules and Judges Approval Regulations for consideration by the Dogs Australia Board. In the future we will be offering a Dogs Australia Groomers Certification Program.
Currently there are approximately 5,000 canine groomers in Australia. To participate in FCI Competitions a canine groomer must be member of a Dogs Australia Member Body, the introduction of Canine Grooming will see an increase in our membership. and bring the list of Competitive Sports that we offer to our members to fifteen
Our Competitive Sports are Agility, Dances with Dogs, Trick Dog, Draft Test, Earthdog Test, Endurance, Flyball, Herding, Lure Coursing, Obedience, Tracking, Retrieving and Field, Scent Work and Sled Sports.
Dogs Australia has received queries regarding the judging of the Veterans’ Class at FCI CACIB Shows.
The following advice has been received from FCI.
The Best of Sex competition must include at least the FCI-CACIB-J winner, the FCI-CACIB winner and the FCI-CACIB-V winner. The judge places the exhibits in order of quality without taking into consideration which classes they come from.
Put into the Australian context, this means that the Veterans Class is judged as an ordinary class and the winner of the Veterans Class will compete for the Challenge Certificate. The Veterans Class should be judged between Junior and Intermediate. If a dog from one of the classes (Minor, Puppy, Junior or Veteran) which is not eligible for a CACIB wins the Challenge Certificate, the Dogs then eligible for the CACIB should be judged and that Certificate awarded to the best exhibit from those classes.
Obviously the two challenge winners will then compete for Best of Breed.
For clarification dogs 15 < 18 months can compete in either the Junior or the Open/Champion Classes. If they compete in the Junior Class, they can receive a CACIB-J but not a CACIB. If they compete in the Open/Champion Class, they can receive a CACIB but not a CACIB-J. The same principle applies to the Veterans.
NOTE:
We have identified errors in Regulations Part 5, Clause 9.7.1 (b) and (d) and the regulations will be amended as follows to comply with the FCI advice.
Regulations Part 5 – Conformation Show
9.7.1 (b) - Remove Class 4 - Junior For dogs aged nine and under eighteen months. (providing the winner is over 15 months of age)
(This class is shown in 9.7.1.(a)
9.7.1 (d) - Remove the wording ‘No other classes may be offered at CACIB Shows. (Added 02/023, 5.11 – Effective 01/07/23’ from Class 12.
(Wording already appears below Class 12 and applies to all other classes.)
Please note Regulations Part 5 – Conformation Show has been amended in accordance with the February 2024 Special Board meeting minutes –refer Item 6.9 and 6.12 where both amendments are effective from 1 April 2024.
In addition, a numbering error in Section 9.9 –Titles, Awards and Main Ring Competitions has been corrected.
Our website has been updated with the amended regulations and they can be viewed at: https:// dogsaustralia.org.au/members/rule-regulations/ regulations/
Dogs Australia has received an application for reregistration of the following FCI recognized breed: PORCELAINE
They are arranging for this breed to be added to the business system and for their website to be updated with the relevant breed standard.
In addition, the Dogs Australia Group listing will be updated with this breed being allocated Group 4 (Hounds) as confirmed by the National Breed Standards Coordination Group.
A reminder is extended to all exhibitors that once your breed has been completed, could you please vacate the assembly area immediately to make room for the next breed.”
An error has been identified in the Rules & Guidelines for the conduct of Track & Search Dog Trials which were effective from 1 January 2024.
The error occurred in dot point (g) under Safety where the word “may” should read “must” to be consistent with paragraph 2 under Safety.
Currently reads:
The safety of competitors, tracklayers, officials,
other persons, and dogs at a trial is of paramount concern. As track and search tests are conducted in urban environments where there are likely to be hazards including moving vehicles and uneven surfaces all reasonable steps to protect safety must be taken.
A competitor who does not comply with safety requirements must be disqualified. Before commencing judging a test the judge must check that the dog and handler have on the necessary equipment. A judge may abort or suspend a track at any time if they consider it necessary to do so for safety.
(g) The Judge may disqualify any Handler who does not comply with safety requirements.
Amended to read:
(g) The Judge must disqualify any Handler who does not comply with safety requirements.
Please note the updated Rules & Guidelines for the conduct of Track & Search Dog Trials are now available from our website under Tracking at: https://dogsaustralia.org.au/members/ruleregulations/rules/

Please note the updated RATG rules are now available from our website under Retrieving & Field Trial at: https://dogsaustralia.org.au/members/ rule-regulations/rules/
The National Dances with Dogs/Trick Dog Committee Chairperson, Barbara Murfet has confirmed the committee has identified a number of typographical and consequential errors in the Rules for the conduct of Dances with Dogs Competitions & Rules for the conduct of Trick Dog Tests.
These have been rectified and the updated rules as well as the Summary of Dances with Dogs changes to titles are now available from our website under Dances with Dogs and Trick Dog at: https:// dogsaustralia.org.au/members/rule-regulations/ rules/

A significant number of DNA profiles for the Sire and Dam of puppies in a litter have been detected as having NO for their Approved Collection Method. As a result of this we have slightly amended our processes for verifying DNA Approved Collection Methods.
We encourage all Breeders to check the status of the Approved Collection Method (ACM) on the DNA profiles of Sire and Dam when requesting DNA parentage reports.
Breeders often have different DNA profiles for their dogs as a result of additional Disease testing. Using the DNA profile with the Approved Collection method will assist in streamlining the registration processes.

"The breed is able to work all day, being built for endurance. They love to move, be active and well stimulated, which is why active people are the perfect fit for Pointers."
The Pointer: is the breed I think is the best and personally I could not live without.
Pointers are athletic, people focused, elegant and gentle. I recommend them for a variety of living situations, including as family pets where they excel, dote on their people and are so good with children. I have two young ones myself and they have slotted right into a dog’s world. All the dogs across all ages have accepted them and tolerate them exceedingly well, being incredibly patient at times. For anyone who is fairly active, a Pointer would love you as their human.
wayward like their scent hound ancestors – the Bloodhound and Foxhound. If you do not work on their recall, they tend to follow their nose wherever it takes them – and it can take them quite a distance at times.
Being quite an energetic breed, they require a lot of physical stimulation. I personally find keeping them stimulated deters them from honing their gardening talents and sock stealing skills. Older Pointers, who move at a notch slower are brilliant companions and bed buddies for older or retired families too – they are happy to potter about and simply be with their people. They are soft and kind in nature rather than brash and rough, which I think they have inherited from their ancestor, the Greyhound. They can be fierce protectors like the Bull Terrier, who is another ancestor. They regard their guard dog status as a high priority, but are normally all bark.
It is common for Pointers to get a bit sniffer
I often run 8-10 dogs at our local dog park and it only takes one with plastic ears to send, what is normally a very attentive responsive pack, into a flurry of chaos. They normally will move as a unit and run in giant circles, coming back to find their human once they’ve chased enough butterflies, followed a scent or two, or found the ultimate goal – something delectable to roll in.
The final ancestor they are believed to be directly linked to is the Spanish Pointer who is quite different to the Pointers we see today. They are a very slow and accurate dog and not as nimble and athletic as today’s English Pointer.
The history of the Pointer is more extensive than you’d think having been recognised in paintings from the 1500’s. Some evidence suggests they were
around during the time of the Pharoh’s of Egypt and is believed to be one of the oldest sporting breeds (once referred to as ‘Brach’ or ‘Braque’). After the war of the Spanish Succession in 17041713, the British troops were won over by the breed and this is how the Pointer made its way to England. There the breed became one that was preserved by the Aristocrats. They jealously guarded their bloodlines which was confined to the upper crust of British society.
The breed has such a fabulous ambassador in 'Judy' – WWII’s only POW canine. I highly recommend looking her up if you haven’t heard about her. What a full life she lived! She went from being an official crew member on a war boat detecting inbound enemy aircrafts, to saviour when their boat sunk. She was able to source water, keeping the crew alive and then eventually became a POW in Japan. Her human friends kept her safe and alive. Judy finally returned to England with her chosen human and fellow soldier, Frank Williams, to live out the rest of her days.
'Sensation' is another fantastic breed ambassador, and a pretty familiar one to many dog show
fanciers. He is the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show logo – a lemon lad who was UK born and excelled in the show ring in his homeland. He was then imported to America to strengthen the breeding stock there. He managed to find his way to becoming Westminster’s emblem from 1936, and still is today.
Pointers have shown how captivating and special they can be in history, but where do they excel?
Aside from being fantastic pets, I'll look more at their desire to follow their nose. Those big wet nostrils are the business end. Their original intended function was to locate the game in the field using their nose, and 'Point' once it was located. The function of pointing is the dog physically showing where the game is. They stand motionless, bar a tail normally quivering out straight, neck outstretched, slightly crouched on their legs with nose pointed in the direction of the game. The most defining feature is the front leg lifted in the air and pointing in the direction of the game, reinforcing the direction the nose has indicated where the game is at.
The breed is able to work all day, being built for endurance. They love to move, be active and well stimulated, which is why active people are the perfect fit for Pointers.
You cannot reshape the genetic makeup of the Pointer and get them to slot into your lifestyle. You need to find the breed that best suits you. There are generations of genetics which have preserved and honed the core abilities of the Pointer. Many are still used today in the UK to locate game and work the moors (which I think is fabulou). They are still fit for purpose by keeping the core form and function of the breed front and centre.
Pointers can come in a variety of colours; orange and white, black and white, liver and white, lemon and white, solid, or tri-coloured. It is often said ‘a good dog cannot be a bad colour’. I think this is very true for the Pointer.
Size wise, they are a large breed and measure;
Males: 63 – 69 cm (25 – 27 in)
Females: 61 – 66 cm (24 – 26 in).
In regard to health issues, I’ve found them to be a largely healthy breed. We have incorporated lines from all over the world and are always very mindful of any issues we may also introduce with a more diverse gene pool.
Most of our oldies tend to live a long life, ranging from 10-15 years. With cancer being the most common thing that catches them in the end. The Pointer is, in the grand scheme of things, quite a healthy breed compared to most.

The Parliamentary report on the proposed bill with the amendments to the Animal Management (Cats & Dogs) Act (2008) has been released. The recommendation is effectively that the Bill proceed in its existing form including the ban/prohibition on specific breeds.
https://documents.parliament.qld.gov.au/ tp/2024/5724T338-5839.pdf
The key objectives of the Bill are summarised as follows: "amending the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 (AMCD Act) to strengthen dog control and management laws in Queensland to enhance community safety by:
• imposing a new state-wide ban on restricted dog breeds;
• reviewing penalties for the owners of dogs that cause harm;
• introducing a new offence that includes imprisonment as a maximum penalty for
the most serious dog attacks;
• clarifying when a destruction order must be made for a regulated dog
• limiting appeals to the Queensland Civil and Administration Tribunal Appeals (QCATA) jurisdiction to matters of law regarding destruction orders."
"The committee was satisfied that the proposed state-wide ban on restricted dog breeds was appropriate, noting that this will align Queensland legislation with Commonwealth legislation and meets community expectations. The committee has recommended that the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries develop guidelines on breed identification, in consultation with the Animal Management Taskforce, to provide consistency in the identification process and outcomes across all Queensland local governments.
•The committee acknowledged the benefits associated with state-wide effective control requirements and that effective compliance by dog
owners provides preventative measures that have the capacity to keep community members and their animals safe in public places. The committee considers the increased penalties outlined in the Bill provide a sufficient deterrent for dog owners who do not ensure effective control of their dog, particularly dog owners who are repeat offenders.
The committee recognised the need for a comprehensive community education campaign to educate dog owners and the community regarding responsible dog ownership, dog safe behaviours and effective control requirements. The committee found that a community education Agriculture and Fisheries and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2023 Housing, Big Build and Manufacturing Committee v campaign will provide another vital layer of prevention against dog attacks and aggression, further protecting community members and their animals.
The issue of a timely and effective response to serious dog attacks was of particular concern to the committee, especially the process of destruction of dogs that have instigated serious attacks on people.
The committee considers the rights of victims in serious attacks by a dog to be underdeveloped suggesting that the matter be further explored by
The committee supported measures that improve the timeliness and effectiveness of responses to serious dog attacks and commented that community safety will be enhanced by limiting subsequent appeal applications for QCAT Appeals (QCATA) to questions of law."
Dogs Queensland’s submissions are summarised in the report as follows: "Dogs Queensland claims that the proposed breed-based ban will fail to prevent dog attacks. They purport aggression is not breed-specific and aggressive dog incidents occur as a result of interactions between humans
Despite the substantial work put into our submissions on this issue, it is disappointing that the State Government Parliamentary Committee was determined not to accept the arguments by the significant major stakeholders and also to conveniently ignore what was the overwhelming evidence on the effectiveness of breed specific legislation. As stated at the outset, the government is simply looking for a quick fix so that it can be seen to be doing something rather than addressing
The dissenting view (also set out in the report) was more considered and clearly took into account the submissions by the major stakeholders.
Brisbanites were rounded up from across the city and herded into the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on 9 and 10 March 2024 for a fantastic showcase of all things K9 at this year’s Dog Lovers Festival!
Not to be left standing without a Best in Show performance was our own Dogs Queensland stand with a great display of breeds from every group represented across the weekend.
The general public loved meeting and petting our excellent tempered K9 friends and were in awe of the wonderful personalities that our beloved pure bred dogs displayed.
Dog sports and the idea of having fun with a big group of like-minded people and their dogs too, were certainly top of the pointscore list for many. People did not know we offered so many activities and loved the idea of some new and emerging sports too such as: Backpacking, Trick Dog and Weight Pull. The thought of fun in Agility, Fly Ball,
Rally, Lure Coursing and Scent Work were certainly changing the expression on many people's faces and they could see themselves getting involved with their own dog too.
Dog sports fliers were popular as was where to find the local obedience and training clubs. With so many breed clubs on display as well, gaining information on pure bred breeders was top of mind for many too and we had the info there to help gain the right answer for every type of question.
Our team managed to Lure many people to join as Community Members of DQ – a first step to getting those people fully involved in our K9 community. People were Rallying to keep in contact and gain further information. They were shown and assisted in how to download the DQ App onto their phone so they can always keep in contact with us.
DQ Showbags, Caps and T-Shirts were wagging their way out the door and into the homes of many new and potential DQ members … with Sue Hewinson managing one of many sales, which included 3 showbags, a cap and T-shirt! Great work
Sue for getting our logo and contact information into the homes of many people who engaged with our stand. I believe your cheeky humour and banter certainly had people Tracking their way to the DQ stand, wanting to pamper their pooches at home with our DQ toys and Plush Puppy gifts found in our showbags.
Kelly Cousins had a great icebreaker with the public so everyone was comfortable meeting her Irish Setter … she had a great T-shirt made that said “Fergus’s Mum”. People came up and said, “You must be Fergus” and gave him a great hug! Fergus was so popular having his photo taken on the podium with the public that he didn’t want to take a break either – what a smooch and photo hog he was! Great work Kelly and Fergus and thanks for volunteering your time on the stand.
Ross West and his very easy going Bichon Frise were also a hit with those people wanting to learn more about toy and small breeds. So many commented on what a great dog breed it is and have now certainly moved a BF not only into consideration but also to the top of their list of choices (rather than an Oddle) moving forward. Thanks Ross for being patient and answering the same question so many times, “What breed is that?”. You certainly moved people back to wanting a pure bred dog in their lives again.
Obedience and training pups or mature dogs was a popular topic and Davene Hines and her inspirational Border Collie certainly helped people understand how a little bit of effort and persistence can bring a whole new perspective to “good dog”. Davene explained that obedience and the relationship built between the owner and their canine friend is increased exponentially when a dog is in tune with its family. The myth that obedience is boring and forcing a dog to be good was put to rest by Davene and she certainly changed the attitude of many who now want to come and train with their dogs and gain that true connection between owner and dog. Well done Davene for being such a great spokesperson for our sports in Obedience, Rally and general training at our local clubs.
Jodie Wilshier certainly kept the crowds begging for more as she showcased all the breeds from the clubs present at the Festival on the Breeders Stage.
No Search and Rescue was necessary as Jodie had all the answers to help the general public Retrieve their answers to their most popular questions. Two full days on stage spruiking the pure bred breeds, great activities to get into with dogs, sending people to the DQ stand for more information … taking questions from the public off the floor and providing information on all things K9 just flowed like a well run Show or Trial for Jodie on stage. … High in Trial should be awarded to Jodie for the Performance given over the event!
Without all the volunteers and hard work behind the scenes, not only the DQ stand but all the breed club stands, the Festival would not have been such the success that it was. Those attending the Cat Lovers Festival next door came to the Dog Lovers Festival and DQ stand as it was so much more fun and interactive! Well done everyone!!
Special thanks to: Aleisha Watt and her Elkhounds, Tamara Shead and Karin Connell and their Goldens, Ross West and his Bichon, Amy Hoult and her Bostons, Kelly Cousins and the Irish, Yvonne Rittmannsburger and her Sheltie, Petra Trapp and the Briard, Ann Trubshaw and Brittany Raisin with their JRT’s, Davene Hinds and her BC, Danny Lang and the GSP, Katherine Wishart and the Fauves together with Sue Hewinson, Carolyn Ryan, Tracy Hopper, Tabitha Young, Jodie Wilshier, Courtney Stevens, Barb Cumming and Rob Harrison – you all made the DQ stand amazing and represented all of our members outstandingly! Best in Show to you all!!

For every physical experience an animal has, there may also be an effect on their mental wellbeing.
The emotional needs of animals are important as well as their physical needs like food, water, exercise etc.
The commonly known ‘Five Freedoms’ model of animal welfare was first developed in the 1960s and has shaped the development of evidence-based animal welfare standards that have been adopted worldwide, including here in Australia, as a basic tool for identifying and assessing animal welfare needs.
As animal welfare has evolved over the past decade, animal welfare is going beyond meeting the basic needs of animals and recognising animals emotional needs to encourage positive experiences. This concept has been used to develop a new more contemporary model know as the Five Domains.
The table below outlines the differences between the Five domain and the Five Freedom model.
FIVE FREEDOMS
Freedom from hungar and thirst
Freedom from discomfort
Freedom from pain, injury and disease
Freedom to express normal behaviour
Freedom from fear and distress
The Five Domains model also highlights that simply removing and/or avoiding poor welfare (e.g. hunger) does not lead to good welfare but may only provide at best a neutral state of welfare. As the correlation between each domain becomes an important part of animals wellbeing – the more focus is given to the mental state of an animal.
The figure to the right illustrates that the welfare state of an animal is the subjective mental state, which in turn is generated by the four other domains (nutrition, environment, health, and behaviour) that influence an animal’s quality of life.
FIVE DOMAINS
Optimal nutrition
Enriching environment that meets physical and mental needs
Good health
Normal expression of behaviour
Good mental state
Breeding dogs takes time, effort and patience to ensure the health and welfare of breeding dogs and their progeny are healthy, well socialised and mentally sound animals. By spending time with your breeding dogs you will be able to recognise even small changes in behaviour which is normal-ly the first sign something is not right. When breeding dogs and puppies live in a positive welfare state, they can focus on growth, learning and activities they enjoy and have the best chance of, breeding well, having a successful show career and adapting to pet homes.
One of the great strengths of the Five Domains is its acknowledgement that simply minimising or resolving negative physical or mental states does not necessarily result in positive welfare, but may only provide, at best, a neutral state. For animals to have a good quality of life, we need to go beyond minimising negatives to also focus on providing them with a life that is filled with positive mental experiences.
Here are some practical ways to incorporate the Five Domains to have positive welfare outcomes in your kennels.

On Sunday 18 February 2024 the dogs sports fraternity came together for one more fantastic day of presentations of outstanding achievements from the year 2023.
The event commenced with a beautiful lunch supplied by our very own Wagz Cafe and was opened by our Vice President, Barbara Murfet who welcomed our President, Carolyn Ryan and board member, Elisa McCutcheon.
We also had special guest, Fiona Harden to award our Peter Harden Memorial trophy for UD and Linda Bennett to award her trophy in Memory of her Red and White Setter, Finegan for UDX.
Our Northern clubs joined the ceremony by Zoom, and a big thank you to Shane Yates for his time in assisting us.
Dogs Queensland would like to thank Penny Parker for all the images appearing on pages 28 to 35.

Barbara Murfet made a special presentation to Coral Pethers for her dedication of over 10 years to the tracking champions board and committee. Coral has retired her position and this was a special thank you presentation.
Barbara also made a special awards to all the newly appointed judges which they all received their certificates.
Barbara Murfet then awarded the Tim Thomas Multi Title Sport Dog of the Year which was presented to: Carol Ward.
On Sunday 3 March 2024 the DWD & Tricks Subcommittee conducted a Fundraiser Double Trick Dog Tests under the wonderful arena at Caboolture's grounds. Many thanks is extended to the Caboolture Dog Obedience Club for the use of their venue. This event is a precursor to the Inaugural State and National Trick Dog Tests to be conducted at Durack on the 29 and 30 June 2024.
We had a good entry with lots of successes. A big thank you to Royal Canin for the great
sponsorship of the event. It was lovely to see so many different breeds of dogs competing. One of the special benefits of Trick Dog Tests is that it can be shaped to suit all dogs and handlers. Handlers can choose those tricks which suit them and their dogs capabilities. Also they get to use their own equipment with is then both safe and familiar to the dog.
Our Judges and Stewards looked after all and ensured everyone got the best chance possible to let their dog shine.

“ FIND US ON FACEBOOK FOR FAST COMMUNICATION ”
With the recent Dog Lovers Festival being so well attended in March 2024 down in Brisbane, we know people across the whole, love to have fun with their dogs. Especially now, people are looking for fun activities to get involved with as the weather is becoming more enjoyable to get out and about with their best fluffy friend and at the same time that doesn’t cost them the earth.
Sometimes people in our local communities think that becoming a member of one of our clubs is all about competing in trials or shows and there is only room for competition. Little do they know that we offer fun activities and training too and it’s up to them if they want to take it further with competition of just have fun with friends on training nights.
Many do not realise that any dog can have a go … whether pedigree or another mix, whether big or tiny, no matter their own fitness level or physical ability – any dog and any person can have a go at the fun we offer.
A great way to gain more members is promoting our clubs at the local level to the local community through local Facebook pages and even through local markets – both of which are easily accessible to us all in Zone 2 (there are always markets on our
areas every weekend). Even having some flyers on the desk of our local vets attracts interest too. Many of us usually have a great rapport with our local council, so having them give a flyer to new dog registrations in the area can be a great introduction too.
Local newspapers and radio love a feel good story, especially around dogs and all about the fun things on every weekend – so have a chat or drop them a message, as they are always looking for local community activities too.
Promoting our friendly atmosphere, fun activities with our dogs, like-mindedness, and a mindset of beginners all welcome with easy startup activities, will all help to grow our club memberships, increase the bank balance, gain more volunteers and build numbers in the sports as a whole. It just needs to start with an invitation, a bit of fun and a “great job on having a go … see you next week for more?” kind of attitude.
With the level of experience in the members we already have in our clubs, we can even have a go at some of the newer disciplines emerging or some of the sports that we have not seen up in the Zone for a while. Clubs could promote these fun new activities for locals to come and see thereby creating more interest.
The opportunities are endless and I know we all are
busy people, but an hour here and there by a few people with enthusiasm in your club may just give you a whole big boost to your local dog club.
March saw some great events in the Zone with the Rockhampton Dog Obedience Club kicking off their year as did the Magpies Mackay Dog Obedience Club. The dog sports disciplines continue to be strong in the Zone and I believe a few new titles were gained at these trials too … well done to all!
Championship shows continue to draw great entries and we’re looking to see some great images of the Bundaberg Easter Extravaganza in our May edition. Gladstone Kennel Club again drew an impressive entry for their State Bred Sweepstakes offering prizes to 6th place this year!
Coming up, no matter what your discipline, this month we have all the action here in Zone 2:
6 April – Gayndah Show Society Inc: Championship Show
12/13 April – Maryborough Dog Obedience Club: 2 x Obedience & 3 x Trick Trials,
20 April – Mt Perry Show Society Inc: Championship Show
20/21 April – Wide Bay Working Gundog Club Inc: Retrieving Trial
21 April – Callide Valley Canine Club Inc: Championship Show
26-28 April – Rockhampton Dog Obedience Club: Tracking Trial
27 April – Magpies Mackay Dog Obedience Club Inc: Trick & Agility Trials
27/28 April – Pioneer Valley Kennel Club: 3 x Championship Shows
Looking forward to seeing you all around the Zone!
Gladstone Kennel Club – Golden Retrievers. Inset: The winner (Whippet) being presented. All clubs reserve the right to appoint a reserve or replacement judge if necessary.

In keeping with the Dog Queensland Rules and Regulations (42.4 – page 43), clubs are advised schedules are to be submitted to the DQ office at least 3 calendar months prior to the month of publication of the Show Schedule. Please note that schedule advertising must appear in the Dog World magazine 2 months prior to the event (a total of 5 months).
Late schedules will appear in the following edition of DQ’s Dog World magazine.
For example, the schedule for a show to be held on 23 November 2024 would need to be submitted to the office by 23 June 2024. This allows for the 3 months prior to the schedule being published in the August 2024 Dog World magazine, which is the required 2 months prior to the date of the show.
To submit Schedules or for more information contact Ian at ian@dogsqueensland.org.au
