The President’s Message The Queensland Dog World
President’s Message for December 2016 Well another year is nearly at a close, and what a year it has been. A great deal of work has been achieved throughout 2016, however our organisation faces more challenges ahead and even bigger things to come in 2017. Puppy Farming Legislation Over the last month, there has been significant reactions in relation to the Animal Management (Protecting Puppies) and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2016. As previously reported, the Minister for Agriculture resigned from Parliament, and left our negotiations with the Government at a stalemate. Thankfully, the new minister has now been appointed. Bill Byrne has been returned to the portfolio and Dogs Queensland have already held a meeting with Minister Byrne and his chief of staff. We hope to have more discussions before the year ends regarding our position and working towards the best possible outcome for our members. Members will have also received a template from the office, which we encourage everyone to look at and use to draft a letter to your local MP. I encourage members to include their own impact statement of how the legislation will effect them personally. We provided by email a full list of the Queensland Government MP’s, their localities and contact details to assist in getting these letters and impact statements out to the appropriate MP’s in each members area. Service Delivery Review Board Matters have handed down their ‘Service Delivery Review’ to the Board. A workshop was help with Board Matters and all Directors to discuss a number of items and recommendations for moving the office forward. The Board will be establishing a model and timeline of the key priorities from the report, and will facilitate discussions with staff before the end of this year. These discussions are of the utmost importance. As these discussions deal with the personal lives of our employees, I ask members to understand and respect the very sensitive and confidential nature of these matters. Early next year, we plan to begin implementation of the Service Delivery review recommendations and will keep members up to date of what is happening and the time-frames involved.

Notice to advertisers The Trade Practices Act came into force on 1st October 1974. Certain provisions of the act relating to consumer protection place a heavy burden upon advertisers, advertising agents and the publishers of advertisements. Durack Fun Days For 2017, Clubs using Durack for ‘Fundays’ or similar events will only be allowed to do so twice a year. The dates for 2017 will be Sunday 14th May and Sunday 19th November.
Dog World Copy Deadline Please note that the Copy deadline for the February 2017 Issue will be brought forward to 19th December 2016.
Closure Of The Durack Grounds Please note that to allow the Grounds Manager, Bob Dorr, to take leave, the Dogs Queensland Sports Grounds will be closed from the 23rd December to 3rd January inclusive.
Members Breaches Hearings Ms S Eller Following a disciplinary hearing conducted under the Rules of the CCC(Q) Ltd 2005 as amended, the Breaches Panel found that Ms S Eller, in respect to the charge on the balance of probabilities and with the evidence before them, the Panel found the charge to be substantiated and that Ms Eller had breached ANKC Ltd Rules for the Conduct of Agility Trials Section 8.1.4 and CCC(Q) Ltd Rule 262.2(3). In accordance with Rule 266(d), Ms Eller was issued with a reprimand for her conduct.
Dogs Queensland Fees 2017 The preparation of the 2017 Budget is an important function as ultimately the budget determines the level of increase necessary in respect to our fees and charges and in this way affects all members. The budget policy of containing increases in fees and charges to a minimum has been maintained in 2017.
Litter Registrations Litter registrations (under 3 months) Litter registrations (3 – 6 months) Litter registrations (6 – 12 months)
$42 to $43 per Pup $70 to $71 per Pup $88 to $89 per Pup
Membership Fees, Prefix Fees, Transfer Fees, Judges Licence Fees, Magazine Advertising Fees, Title Fees and Re-Registration Fees remain at 2016 levels. The Board, has however recognised that a number of members utilise their Prefix very sparingly, in fact more than 50% of financial members with a financial Prefix did not register a litter in 2016, thus the decision not to increase the Prefix Renewal cost. However, in regards to Litter Registrations, the Board has agreed to place a levy on those members who continue to register higher amounts of Litters. Bearing this in mind, commencing on 1 st January 2017, once a breeder has whelped more than 6 litters in the Calendar year, the 7th Litter whelped onwards in that Calendar year will attract the following fees per dog, irrespective of when the Litter is registered, ie double the usual Registration Fee. However, the applicable fee will be based upon the Registration Fee at time of receipt by the office. Litter registrations (under 3 months) Litter registrations (3 – 6 months) Litter registrations (6 – 12 months)
$86 per Pup $142 per Pup $178 per Pup
Club Affiliation Fees and Ground Levies will remain at 2016 levels. The Board recognised that several smaller Agricultural Societies and Breed Clubs were finding things economically difficult and agreed to the following reductions for 2017. •
•
Agricultural Societies with entry numbers of less than 150 will pay a reduced Administration Fee of 10%, reduced from 17.5% The Administration Fee for Specialty Breed Clubs with fewer than 50 entries will be reduced from 10% to 0%.
The following fees were minimally increased by 1.5% with effect from 1st January 2017.

Members’ Forum The Dogs Queensland Board is pleased to announce that the final Quarterly Members’ Forum for 2016 will take place on Saturday 17th December at Durack from 2:00pm, with light refreshments being provided. Greg McDougall, from the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, will be in attendance at the Meeting to answer any questions that members may have in regards to the Animal Management (Protecting Puppies) and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2016 Once again, it is hoped that members will come along in a relaxed fashion and have a chat with Board Members.
Queensland Dog Sports Club’s Presidents, Secretaries And Treasurers Meeting The Meeting of the Queensland Dog Sports Clubs Presidents, Secretaries and Treasurers will now take place on Sunday 12 th February 2016 in the Function Room at 247 King Ave, Durack from 2:00pm. All Agenda Items are to be received in the office no later than close of business on 30th January 2016.
Policy Surrounding Breed Club Open Shows
August Specialty Day 2017 It has been recently agreed that the extra Specialty Day be continued and offered to Specialist Breed Clubs once again. This would not be an extra Show Date and Clubs would only have the option to move existing Show/s. It is proposed that for 2018, as in previous years, the Specialty Day be held on the Sunday of the 'Ekka' at Durack, in 2017 the date is Sunday 12th August. However, to enable Dogs Queensland to work with the RNA in scheduling their breed days, the day would only be available to 4 or 5 Clubs and would be done by application and will be rotated amongst all Clubs that wished to participate. Preference would, however obviously be given to National Breed Shows. It is hoped that this initiative would help in a number of ways, Club entries would increase, RNA entries would increase and 'space' pressure would be relieved on some of the existing Specialty Days. Any Club wishing to apply for this Show Date should do so in writing prior to 15th January 2017.
Sydney Royal Show All members are asked to note below the closing dates for the Sydney Royal Show. Please make sure your Dogs Queensland Membership is financial well in advance of these dates. Closing dates; Entries close - Wednesday 1st February 2017 except Baby Puppy Classes and Sweepstakes Wednesday 1st March 2017
The Board has recently agreed to the following policy: When a Breed Club is conducting both a Championship Show and an Open Show on the same day, the Open Show should be completed first. The rationale behind the policy is that a trainee Judge who is judging the Open Show may need to be mentored and complete critiquing requirements. The trainees cannot do this if they watch the Championship Show first and then be expected to judge the Open Show.
Error In October Issue
General Policy Of Non-Payment Of Camping Fees Away From Durack Dogs Queensland has been made aware of several instances at Shows held away from Durack where exhibitors have not paid the Camping charges that were due. Members are reminded that the payment of fees for Camping are a condition of entry to a Show and if any member fails to pay, they are at risk of forfeiting any awards that they may have received at the Show.
Members are referred to the recent issue of Dog World. On page 56, with photos of the winners from the Ekka, the sport of Dances with Dogs was incorrectly referred to as Dancing with Dogs. This should of course have been Dances with Dogs.

2.
Identify all witnesses (including names, addresses and membership number);
3.
Obtain signed statements from all parties involved, together with witnesses (must be Statutory Declarations);

Incidents Where There Is Injury Or Damage To Property 1.or Compile an incident report on the Dogs Queensland Incident Report form providing as much information of the incident as possible. 2.
Obtain signed witness statements in the form of statutory declarations from any witnesses to the incident. This is particularly important in the case of personal injuries.
3.
Ensure that names and addresses of witnesses are also provided with their statements in case they need to be followed up afterwards.
4.
It is important that as much information as possible is gathered at the time of the incident while everyone's recollection is fresh.
5.

7.
Ensure that the Show Manager's Report also carries a reference to any such incident.
8.
Dogs Queensland will then forward all details to their Insurers who will then deal directly with the injured party. The injured party needs to liaise directly with Dogs Queensland’s Insurers.
Show Manager's Checklist Incidents Involving Aggressive Dogs This list details ALL of the steps that you MUST follow. It is suggested that to assist you in the process and ensure you have not missed anything, check each step as you proceed: Obtain details of dog or dogs involved (name, registration, catalogue number); Identify witnesses (name, address, membership number); Obtain signed statements from all parties, including witnesses, in the form of Statutory Declarations; Identify the members of the Committee to handle the inquiry; Arrange a meeting and notify all parties they are to attend; Show Manager must attend the hearing in the capacity of an observer; Ensure that the Chairperson of the special Committee verbally notifies the person or persons involved of its decision on the day at the conclusion of its deliberations; If the complaint is found proven, inform the exhibitor that the dog is suspended for six (6) months effective from that date; Notify the owner of their right of appeal and that the dog remains suspended during the appeal process; and Forward to the Secretary of Dogs Queensland, within five (5) working days, the Show Manager's Report, all statements and report of proceedings of the meeting.

Zone 2 Showcase The Queensland Dog World
Zone 2 Dog World Column, December 2016 ell, we have made it through to the end of 2016 and there have been some wonderful events and activities for our members to enjoy. As we have now reached the very warm part of the year, activities have slowed right down while members enjoy the festive season and well-earned break before we start all over again in 2017.
What’s On in Zone 2 in December? Zilch – we are on holiday For those members who absolutely must do something in December there are some offerings in Brisbane including: • • • • •
State Obedience Trials Committee (Obedience, Double Rally-O, Agility and Jumpers) – 3rd December Maree Kennel Club (2 x Champ Shows and 1 x Open Show) – 9th and 10th December Directors Show – 16th December Dog Of The Year Support Show – 17th December Grounds Committee Show – 18th December
Wishing any members travelling from Zone 2 to these events the best of luck and safe travels.
Dog of the Year / Puppy of the Year Competitions I would like to congratulate all Zone 2 qualifiers for the Dog of the Year / Puppy of the Year competitions, and any members who travelled down to the final to compete. Although I did not have the opportunity to attend this year, the photos and footage of the pavilion looked fantastic and I’m sure an enjoyable night was had by all.
22 - December 2016
Callide Classic Competition The 15th of October saw the annual Callide Classic competition conducted in Gladstone. This year, the Club welcomed Judge, Gwen Hovey-Jacobs, Carolyn Pearen and Andrew Brown to officiate. With a quality field of starters for the Veterans Sweepstakes, the evening got off to a cracking start, followed by the Puppy Class and then the Dog Class. Callide Classic Dog Champion 2016: Sup Ch Azel Black Mail (Brookes / Azel Kennels) Callide Classic Dog Runner-Up 2016: Sup Ch Karakush Mr Music (Willson / Gibson) Callide Classic Puppy Champion 2016: Ch Aslan She Knows How To Use Em (McCrindle) Callide Classic Puppy Runner-Up 2016: Ch Sunford Divas Gold (Nicholson) Huge congratulations to the winners and place-getters and to everyone who qualified and participated in what was a very enjoyable, relaxed evening. Which is just how we like it.
Huge congratulations to the winners and placegetters and to everyone who qualified and participated in what was a very enjoyable, relaxed evening. Obviously as everyone was overheated with excitement, the Club arranged a water feature in the ring (ok, the pop-up sprinkler came on), causing a lot of excitement and laughter and I understand that the speed with which Janet Stewart-Cook scooped up her Papillon and ran out of the ring has been verified as a qualifying time for the 100m at the next Olympics.

The Club would also like to thank the sponsors for the evening: • • • • • • •
Dogzonline – major sponsor K9Online Magazine Dogs Queensland Brittany Lauga – State Member for Keppel Ken O’Dowd – Federal Member for Flynn Sunford Kennels Tim Thomas
Without the support provided, it would have been impossible to run such a good event and the Club is exceptionally grateful. The Club would also like to acknowledge the great work of Cristina Fornasier who prepared the catalogue and took photos throughout the weekend; and Susie Carige who supported the Classic and prepared and produced documentation for the event.
Volunteer of the Year Award At the Dog of the Year dinner this year, Dogs Queensland presented the inaugural Volunteer of the Year award. This award and program is so important and so valuable for Dogs Queensland as we are an organisation that relies on the support of our largely volunteer workforce and recognising that contribution in a formal way is a fun but important acknowledgement of the driving force of our organisation. I would like to congratulate all those who were nominated and also to thank those who took the time to nominate others. Huge congratulations and thank you to Sue Cook from Zone 2 who was one of three finalists for the award and also to Barbara Carroll, Jim Cook, Bob Collins and Sharon Morris from Zone 2 who were nominees. I would also like to congratulate the overall winner, Jeff Souter. Well done Jeff and all.

Did you know? – Rules in Action If we show dogs in multiple groups, we sometimes have some pretty close shaves moving from one ring to another to ensure that our dogs are able to be exhibited – sometimes we have a clash where we are required at the same time in different rings. When this situation occurs, we need to be mindful that the Rules do not permit the judging in rings to be held up to accommodate us to show in multiple rings. Rule 226 states: All eligible exhibits shall be brought before the Judge for adjudication for class or special prizes / trophy or challenge certificate, as the case may be, immediately the relevant class is called by the Ring Steward, and an exhibit not so produced shall be deemed to be absent. The Committee of any body holding an exhibition under these Rules shall accept no responsibility with reference to eligible competitors being brought before the Judge, and it is necessary that an exhibitor make his/her own arrangements for the exhibit to be taken into the ring. Under no circumstances must judging be delayed owing to a handler not being available.
If there is one thing I would ask of all members, it is to please become more engaged with your hobby, contribute and become involved as much as you can. We are sadly declining in numbers, have more and more difficulty getting volunteers to keep our Clubs and events running and are facing more and more pressure from external organisations such as the RSPCA, Local Councils and State Government. We really need to unite and find our voices as it is a competitive world and we will get pushed around if we don’t stand up for ourselves.
Submissions Submissions for the column of news or photos are always welcome. Please feel free to send to me at: craig.pettett1@bigpond.com Until next time. Photo credits: Supplied by Crissy F Photography
This Rule is very clear and places the onus on us as exhibitors to ensure that if it is possible or likely there will be a clash, that we have to arrange handlers to ensure our dogs are shown. There is no point asking Stewards to slow down or wait for a ring because they do not have the authority to do this. If we fail to plan and take accountability for this, then it is an unfortunate, but real likelihood that we will be called absent. All exhibitors are the same and have to adhere to the Rules. The best way to avoid this situation is through planning. If you show in multiple rings, have a handler as a back up to take a dog in for you in the event there is a clash.
Thank you, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I would like to take the opportunity to thank all who have contributed to the column throughout the year and to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, no matter what it is you’re doing for the festive season. I hope to see you all back again next year to enjoy our wonderful hobby.

THE PAPILLON SU P P L I E D B Y N OE L I N E QU I N N
HISTORY here is marked debate among some as to exactly which breeds were used to develop the Phalène, and from where the Phalène originated. Breeds such as the Cayenne Dog and the European Toy Spaniel are thought to be predecessors of the Phalène. The breed is thought by most breed historians to be a direct descendant of a small Italian Spaniel, however, it is generally believed today that the Phalène's beginnings were in France and Belgium, with Spain as a third possibility. It is interesting that while three countries claim the origins of the breed, France, Belgium, Spain, and Italy was also a main country in which to find Phalènes.
Probably some of the best known is King Louis XIV, King Henry III, Madame Pompadour, and Marie Antoinette. King Henry II allegedly spent upwards of 100,000 crowns in one year alone on his papillons. From Titian through Mignard and his contemporaries, all of the Continental Toy Spaniels had drooping ears. The ears were set high, although far enough apart to show the curve of the skull. They were of medium size, hanging, as one writer has expressed it 'lightly'. There may, however, have been an occasional dog with leathers of sufficient strength for the ears to stand erect. Two 18th Century paintings suggest this. By the time of Louis XIV, French and Belgian breeders had perfected the type they sought. Mignard, the official court painter, in his portraits of the child Marie de Bourbon, the Dauphin and His Family, and several paintings of Henrietta d’Orleans, shows us a little spaniel that could scarcely be improved upon today.
The FCI considers both France and Belgium to be the home of the modern development of the breed. It has been suggested that Phalènes came to be popular in European courts due to the portraits done by Italian artists in Italy. The oldest known portrait with a Phalène is an Italian one. The Phalène was the original of the breed with the Papillon (erect ear) being a considerably later development. One of the earliest known portraits with a Phalène is St Anthony, by Italian artist Sasetta (1392 - 1450). Phalènes began to show up in portraits from the countries of Italy with Titian (1485 - 1576) and Mignard (1612 - 1695), Spain with Velaquez (1598 - 1660), France with Rubens (1577 - 1640), Watteau (1684 - 1721) and Largillere (1659 - 1746), Prussia with Pesne (1683 - 1757). Phalènes are linked with many royal names throughout history.

OVER THE CENTURIES Over the centuries, the tiny Papillon has been far luckier than many of the Royal Families that owned them! Despite how popular they were among the Royalty and titled of Europe, they were very slow to be embraced by the English speaking people. It was in the end of the 19th century that the first erect eared Papillons began to gain popularity, eventually becoming more popular than the original drop ear. In the early 1900's the first erect eared Papillons were being registered with various Kennel Clubs. It was at about this time that the name 'Papillon' came into use.

MME. Delville's Papillon Mignonne In Europe the ruling families knew about Papillons but this breed was not introduced into Great Britain until 1905 and not recognised by the A.K.C. until 1915. The first English champion wasn’t born until 1922, and the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club in the U.K. wasn’t formed until 1923. The Papillon then began to flourish as interest in the erect ear intensified. During the 1920's through the 1940's it was hard to find a Phalène. These early pioneers who first bred the Papillon perhaps liked the look better than that of the Phalène.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Continued from Page 31 In 1935, the Papillon Club of America (PCA) was founded, with the United States holding their first specialty show in 1936. Interest in the breed faltered, and then regenerated in 1948. In 1954 the second specialty show was held. The Papillon made its first appearance in Australia in 1949 when Mrs. Alice Jacobson of Mitcham, Vic., imported the red/white male Corleon of Otter and the female Monamie Berenice (r/w), followed shortly thereafter by the male Jasper of Confryn (r/w) and the tricolour female Cresta of Harleymeads. Mrs Molly Burton was instrumental in founding the Papillon (Dog) Club of NSW in 1966. Their first Championship Show in 1967 was won by Mrs Burton’s Ch Rosmean Henri. In 1976, the Papillon Club of Victoria was formed, holding their first Championship show in 1977 where BIS was Ch Clochette Champagne. Today, fanciers are making a concentrated effort to bring this, the original variety of the breed, back to its correct place as an equal partner of the Papillon. In this effort, considerable thanks must be given to the PCA and our Judges Education committees in Australia for endeavouring to assist the breeders in this very worthwhile, but very difficult, endeavour. The 21st century has seen a revival of interest in the Phalène, with its fanciers pointing out that in countries where it is judged together with the Papillon, Judges must be familiar enough with the breed standard to appreciate the qualities of a well-bred Phalène, and not confuse its dropped ears with those of a semi-erect eared Papillon, which would suggest a conformation fault. Intrigue and fascination are at an all-time high for the Phalène. A worldwide Phalène List is now in existence where fanciers exchange questions and ideas on a daily basis, as well as share their lovely photos of their Phalènes. Now with the Phalène website, breeders and fanciers can tap into a much wider spectrum of the Phalène. The Papillon has become a family favourite of men, women and children who not only love them sitting on their laps, but have a special place in their hearts for this breed of dog. The history of the Phalène is varied and rich. We will probably never know for sure its original conception, or its total history, however, the history of the breed is one of devotion and love from both the dogs to their owners and the owners to their dogs, and this is the greatest testament.
32 - December 2016
The Standard describes the Papilllon as: This dainty, balanced little toy dog should have an attractive head, an alert bearing and an intelligent and lively expression. Movement should be sound, light and free, and not cramped or restricted in any way. The Papillon ears are a distinguishing feature, being large and well fringed. The upright variant should be carried at a 45o angle, carried obliquely, like spread butterfly wings; whilst the dropped variant should be fully dropped so that the inner ear just brushes the cheek bone when the muzzle is just below horizontal, and resemble the dropped wings of a moth. Papillons are generally a happy, friendly breed. Although considered by many as a lap dog, they are an active breed that loves outdoor exercise and demonstrate this amply in dog Agility. Its body should be slightly longer than tall. Because of the drop ear, Phalènes often appear longer than they really are. It should be sound with light and with free movement. Phalènes should appear to float along as they move; a truly beautiful sight to watch. Phalène eyes should be dark in colour and alert. The tail should be up over the back in resemblance of a tea cup handle. They are very intelligent, learning things quickly and easily. They are eager to please and excel in Obedience and Agility. Phalènes are charming characters, often clowns, who thrive in the company of their people. Alternatives names are: • • • • • • •

JUDGING In judging the Papillon and Phalène, it should be remembered that, apart from the ears, they are identical in all other respects and should be judged accordingly. The ears of both types should be mobile as is to be expected from such a lively dog. They may move backwards and forwards quite quickly. As with most toy breeds, approaching with care towards the head of the dog reduces the possibility of them getting a fright and not showing to their best ability. The mobility of the light ear leather of the Phalène is not only normal but desirable. Light currents of air, as will be present when the dog is in motion, will often lift the ear leather lightly and give the appearance of gently wafting 'wings'. The ears do not come up in the manner of the erect eared Papillon but rather pull back against the neck. As with the erect eared Papillon, the ears need to be large with a reasonably wide base and rounded tips and, in the adults, covered with long silken hair.
Rebel at 6 weeks
The Papillon has become a family favourite of men, women and children who not only love them sitting on their laps, but have a special place in their hearts for this breed of dog. Rebel 7 months When at rest the ears are dropped in the manner of any other Spaniel breed but with the slight rise being present. At a point where the muzzle of the Phalene is just below the horizontal, the inner edge of the ears should just touch the cheeks. At the set-on of the Phalene ear, there is commonly a small tuft of hair – this is quite typical and correct. Some Phalène puppies will tend to have more lift to the leather at the base of the ear and it takes time for the ears to 'settle'. As the puppy grows into an adult and gets the normal ear fringing, the weight of the ear fringe will stabilise the drop of the ear leather. Here is an example:The photos of Rebel at 6 weeks, 7 months and as a mature dog show the changes in the Phalène ears over time.

THE INTELLIGENCE OF THE PAPILLON
AGILITY IMAGES
Research studies have consistently put the Papillon in the top 10 most intelligent breeds in the world. It is little wonder that Papillons have excelled in Obedience, Agility and also in Dances with Dogs. Lesser known is their ability to act as valuable Service Dogs and Therapy Dogs.
SERVICE DOGS Papillons are good candidates to be Service Dogs. They are specifically trained to perform tasks and do work that moderate the disabilities of their handlers and help them achieve enhanced levels of safety and independence. Some specific areas where Papillon excel are: •
Mobility service dogs - who perform tasks for persons with physical disabilities, Papillons are still able to perform the majority of required tasks for an amazing array of disabilities. This might include picking up objects dropped on the floor, make beds, tug clothing from the dryer, put it in a basket and tug it from room to room, activate light switches, press handicap door openers, elevator buttons or hand a change purse to a cashier
•
As Hearing Ear or Signal dogs who are trained to alert their hearing impaired or deaf owners of environmental sounds, and to take them to the source of the sound. This might be a siren, a smoke detector, the alarm clock, the microwave or the telephone.
•
As a Seizure Alert dog who alerts his owner with a condition such as Epilepsy, to an oncoming seizure and responds in a trained way
•
As Psychiatric support dogs who moderate their owner's disabilities such as agoraphobia, PTSD or panic attacks
Pictured above: Three Agility Paps from Western Australia. Competing in ANKC and ADAA, Bandit (black ears) is 10 and has JDM3 ADM GD SDX SPD and AAD SAAD MAAD and Australian Teams Dog. Sabre (sable ears) is 7 has AD JDX GD SD SPD and AAD Milo is 4 and quite small but has obtained JD and AAD. We love Agility; it is a great sport. The 200 group is small in WA and only a few Paps but we have a lot of fun. Both Bandit and Sabre flew to Tamworth to compete. Owned and trained by Lyn Green.
Pictured above: This is my new boy Fly. Kutas Sparks will fly. Don’t be fooled by these flying ears he is really a Phalene and has just started Trialling. He came second in his second JD Trial. He is confident and friendly and loves to run and like all paps thinks he is a big dog.
Pictured above: Charlee (Neuter Ch. Papluvn Free Spirit) commenced her Beginner’s Agility Course in April 2015. She continued her training approaching it with enthusiasm and excitement. From 2 competition days involving 6 Beginner Classes, she was awarded 2 first places (both clear rounds), 1 second and 3 third places. We look forward to an enjoyable and exciting future.

THERAPY DOGS Papillons make good Therapy Dogs who provide psychological or physiological therapy to individuals other than their handlers. Typically, they visit various institutions like hospitals, schools, hospices, psychotherapy offices, nursing homes where they are encouraged to socialise and interact with a variety of people.
Pictured above: This Is Gypsy Maisongabbi Likea Fly JDM2, ADM,JDO3,GDX, SPDX, SD 2001 - 2012. Gypsy was a great Papillon. She was smart and fiesty and loved agility. The
Papillon Supplied by Janine Moy he Papillon (French pronunciation: [papij ], "butterfly[-eared]"), also called the Continental Toy Spaniel, is a breed of dog of the Spaniel type. One of the oldest of the toy spaniels, it derives its name from its characteristic butterfly-like look of the long and fringed hair on the ears, the French word for 'butterfly' being papillon. A Papillon with dropped ears is called a Phalène (French for moth).
40 - December 2016
The small head is slightly rounded between the ears with a well defined stop. The muzzle is somewhat short, thin tapering to the nose. The dark, mediumsized, round eyes have thin black rims, often extending at the junction of the eyelids towards the ears. The large ears can either be erect or dropped with rounded tips. The teeth meet in a scissors bite. The long tail is set high carried over the body, and covered with long, fine hair. The straight, long, fine, single coat has extra frill on the chest, ears, back of the legs and the tail. Coat colour is white with patches of any colour. A mask of a colour other than white covers both ears and eyes from back to front.
Appearance and behaviour The Papillon is a very intelligent and self-assured dog that has a very easy time learning new tricks. This dog can be sociable with children and strangers, but is generally reserved around new people. They can also be socialised to get along well with other pets, but care should be taken with rambunctious pets or cats with claws as they may injure it. If not properly socialised, Papillons can be distrustful and exhibit aggressive tendencies toward other dogs and people. Papillons may also be very playful and affectionate. Widely known as great companion dogs, they have the spirit and energy to keep up with active families, but can also be calm enough to be happy with sleeping in the arms of an equally affectionate owner.

Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World
Due to their high energy level, they demand an augmented exercise routine, relative to the average companion breed. Papillons are known as excellent watchdogs as they will alert their owner to changes in their environment. They may be considered garrulous like many other toy dogs. The Papillon can withstand heat but is more sensitive to cold temperatures because of their single-coated fur, and should not be left outside unattended in cold weather. The most iconic aspect of the Papillon is its ears which are large and well fringed, giving them a butterfly wing-like appearance. Papillons are parti-coloured or white with patches of any colour. An all-white dog or a dog with no white is disqualified from the Conformation Show ring. A blaze (area of white extending down between the eyes) and noseband is preferred over a solidcoloured head, but not required. Nose, eye-rims, and lips should be black. Paw pads vary in colour from black to pink, depending on the colouring of the dog.
Temperament The temperament of a Papillon is a happy, friendly, adventurous dog. They are not shy or aggressive. Papillon's make excellent family dogs but should be watched around little children, as should any dog, due to a small child's lack of understanding of a dog's behaviour and the likelihood that they will do something to upset the dog.
Life span Papillons can live up to 17 years.
Health Papillons have only minor health concerns although patellar luxation, and dental problems can be issues. Additionally they can be at risk for PRA, and allergies.
Exercise Play will take care of a lot of their exercise needs; however, as with all breeds, play is not sufficient for all exercise. Daily walks or runs are an excellent way to exercise a Papillon. They will also enjoy a good romp in a safe open area off leash, such as a large fenced-in yard. Papillons are a very active breed of dog and enjoy having a job to perform.

Continued from page 41 Papillon Breeders recommend dog Agility, Rally Obedience, Obedience for Papillons because of their intelligence and energy level. The history of the Papillon is traced through works of art. The earliest toy spaniels resembling the papillon are found in Italy. Tiziano Vicelli painted these small dogs in many famous paintings beginning around 1500 including the Venus of Urbino (1542). Other well known artists who included them in paintings are Watteau, Gonzales Coques, Fragonard, Paolo Veronese, and Mignard. In a painting after Largillierre in the Wallace Collection in London, a Papillon is clearly shown in a family portrait of Louis XIV. Papillons are also in paintings of royal families around Europe and paintings of merchant class families. The breed was popular in England, France, and Belgium, which are considered countries of origin by the FCI.
This dog was said to have been nicknamed Papillon based on the impressively large, erect ears that resembled the wings of a butterfly. The drop-eared variety of the breed came to be called the Phalène (which means 'night moth'). Both types are still bred today and appear in the same litter. The Papillon variety is much more common, although recently the Phalène has undergone a resurgence in popularity. Papillons also enjoy success today in competitive fields outside of Conformation, including Obedience and Agility. Photo credits: Supplied by Janine Moy
The 'Titian spaniels' and those portrayed by later artists through Mignard and his contemporaries had the drooping ears characteristic of today's Phalène; it was not until the end of the 19th century that the erect-eared appearance became fashionable and gave the breed's modern name, Papillon, French for "butterfly". The Titian spaniels were also exclusively red-and-white in coloration, in contrast to the many recognised colorations of today's Papillon. The Papillon's history and long association with royalty have led to many stories about the breed. Marie Antoinette is said to have walked to the guillotine clutching her small dog under her arm, likely an apocryphal tale. However, tradition has it that Marie Antoinette's dog was a small spaniel that had been brought to the French court from Spain on the back of pack mules. According to the story, her pup was spared and cared for in a building in Paris still called the Papillon House. Marie Antoinette's dog was said to have descended from a very old drop-eared breed known as the Epagneul Nain, or Continental Dwarf/Toy Spaniel that appeared in church frescos and paintings as early as the 13th century. The Papillon is still officially referred to as the Epagneul Nain (ENC) in non-English-speaking countries. The name Squirrel Spaniel also has been used, most likely referring to an earlier standard in which the tail set is described as 'curling over the back as a squirrel's'. One version of the history of the two varieties of ear shape in the ENC ('papillon' to denote the erect ear and 'phalène' to denote the dropped ear) is that toward the end of the 19th century, breed fanciers bred a version of the spaniel whose ears stood up.

Humidicribs. We all know that no maternity ward would be without them. We also know that that they have been on the wishlist of dog breeders for years, but have been prohibitively expensive.
Finally, all that's changed. iPaws All For Paws has released an affordable Humidicrib onto the Australian market. We talked to Peter Irby from iPaws, who is amazed at the response from Vets and Breeders alike. Peter tells how the first unit arrived and a Vet asked if he could utilise it for a caesarian the following day to try it out. He was so impressed he sent the puppies home in it, the breeder bought it and he had to buy another! Our feedback is amazing, and not just for sick puppies. Healthy puppies thrive in these units. We have testimonials galore from breeders who describe them as an absolute must. Heat blankets and hot water bottles were fine last century, but in 2016 there's no excuse for not having this life determining equipment on hand.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
The uptake has been so good we've been able to make them even cheaper with prices starting from just $799 plus GST.
Our feedback is amazing, and not just for sick puppies. Healthy puppies thrive in these units. We even have finance available so you can have a unit when your dog whelps, without worrying about finding even more money before those puppies arrive! Corporal CRAIG ‘SPIN’ TURNBULL raig Turnbull calls Brisbane his home town. Craig joined the Australian Regular Army on 14 May 1994, after serving four years in the Army Reserve as a Forward Observer Signaller. He graduated from the 1st Recruit Training Battalion at Kapooka in NSW into the Royal Australian Corps of Transport and served in that Corps for three years before transferring to the Royal Australian Engineers (RAE). Craig joined the Explosive Detection Dog (EDD) Section in 1999. Craig deployed to the Solomon Islands in 2004.
The Solomon Islands First Deployment - 2004 In 2004, the Australian Defence force responded to unrest in the Solomon Islands with the first Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI). Craig, a Sapper at the time, deployed with EDD CHLOE, a Kelpie X Whippet, as the second in command and joined Corporal Jim Hoy with EDD KYLIE, Sapper Phil Grazier with EDD BUSTER and Sapper Graham Ellis with EDD BAILEY. The team supported patrols with Australian and New Zealand infantry on operations among the island chains searching for weapons and explosives. The aim was to deny the ability for armed gangs to intimidate the local population. However, even a visit to the Veterinarian could be an interesting event. On the first visit to the only Veterinarian in the Solomon Islands, the section drove into the capital Honiara in two Land Rovers, following directions discerned from uncertain fourth hand information. On passing through the narrow streets, the vehicles were stared at by the locals who had not seen RAMSI soldiers previously.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
On arrival at the veterinary clinic, the local folk had started to amass into a large group, and it was growing larger by the second. Corporal Jim Hoy decided that Sapper Ellis and Sapper Grazier would stay with the vehicles, lock the doors and keep the motors running while Jim and Craig walked down an alley to confirm the location of the Veterinary practice. Both Jim and Craig were armed with Steyr rifles and 9mm pistols. Craig reflects: ” We got out of the vehicle and moved towards the alley when we were literally swarmed by the civilian population. I gave Jim about a metre clearance so I could attempt to intervene should things go pearshaped and hoped the lads in the vehicles could do the same for me. I had one hand on the pistol grip of the rifle which I had slung and one on my 9mm pistol holster. I think Jim had similar hand positioning. I honestly thought I was in a scene from ‘Black Hawk Down’, but to be honest, the locals were nothing but friendly and inquisitive. They were actually trying to help and direct us to where we would like to go. An awesome experience”. On return from the Solomon Islands, Craig provided support to the Commonwealth State Heads of Government, Sydney Olympics and the Commonwealth Games. In late 2006, he spent a few weeks at home followed by his first deployment to Afghanistan at the rank of Lance Corporal (LCPL). He had teamed-up with EDD RAZZ. I believe that Craig Turnbull endured the most uniquely challenging experiences when compared to all the combat engineer section commanders who were deployed to Afghanistan. He was involved in a number of incidents which were a combination of gross bad luck, medium luck and good luck.
The unique challenge was that during his time and on his watch he had his dog killed in action in 2007, and then on his deployment in 2010, he lost two Sappers and a another dog, the three of them killed in action.
Afghanistan Second Deployment - 2006 Craig deployed to Afghanistan in 2006 where he worked with the Czechoslovakian Forces. This was a challenge in itself as very few of the Czech soldiers spoke English and Craig was the only Australian to operate with them. There were no major incidents during this rotation and Craig returned to Australia with valuable knowledge of working with Coalition troops. He rotated back to Afghanistan in 2007.
Afghanistan Third Deployment - 2007 This is Craig’s medium luck rotation. On 20 September 2007, Craig and RAZZ were returning to their base from another base nicknamed “Forward Operating Base Anaconda”. The road wound its way through a canyon, and as the day was drawing to a close, the convoy needed to be clear of this area before it became dark. On the way along the road the Australian group were being engaged by Taliban snipers at long range. In Craig’s words: “On approaching the crest of a rise, one of the vehicles in the convoy suffered a breakdown, and this split the convoy into two packets. The forward packet moved into a protective formation and stopped to protect the stricken vehicle. A sentry from this group saw a civilian walking on his own along the road about one kilometre ahead. A vehicle was despatched to talk to this person and RAZZ and I were aboard.

Continued from page 45 On crossing a washout, the vehicle detonated an IED and this wounded the two diggers at the front of the vehicle. The two of us at the rear of the vehicle and RAZZ were unhurt. We administered first aid to the wounded and then the two of us ‘held off’ in case the IED was a precursor to an ambush. There was a heap of Taliban radio traffic that indicated that more devices were ahead of us. I assisted the machine gunner in covering our front until other vehicles from the convoy came to secure the area. The two wounded guys were medevaced out and then RAZZ and I started to search the road for further IED. I checked that RAZZ was OK by conducting a 100 metre test search first, and despite the trauma of the blast, RAZZ was still operational. It was now late afternoon and the pressure was on us to get out of the canyon. RAZZ and I worked at best speed clearing the road. I saw RAZZ show interest in a particular part of the road. I sent him in again on a box search over that area and RAZZ again showed interest. I was about to call RAZZ back to me, but RAZZ went in to investigate more closely and as he did, he trod on a pressure plate. This fired the IED and RAZZ was killed in action instantly”. The blast threw Craig backwards and he was wounded and severely stunned by the shock overpressure. There were large rocks thrown by the blast and these rebounded off the vehicles for about fifty metres around the IED site. Craig was rescued by another digger who took him back to his vehicle where he sat for a while to recover. Craig suffered cracked ribs and bleeding from the ears. RAZZ was vaporised by the blast and there is nothing left of him. The convoy continued, and at the first opportunity 'broke track', left the canyon, and arrived back into the base without further incident.

Craig was treated by the medics at Tarin Kowt.
So now he needed to team-up with a new dog, work it and bonding with it quickly.
EOD technician, SGT Oakey, took over the visual search of the road and the patrol made it back to a safe area without further incident. Craig was deeply upset by the loss of his dog and holds the memory of a wonderful mate that not only helped save lives but was great company as well. The EDD Section mourned RAZZ and a memorial plaque was dedicated at TK to his memory. EDD RAZZ is the first Australian military working dog to be killed in action on any battlefield on which the ADF has been deployed. The loss of RAZZ weighed very heavily on Craig and the EDD section. They found it hard to accept that this patrol was the final one for their tour of duty.
Craig was given the choice of two dogs to team-up with and one of them was EDD TANK. TANK had some issues and it is safe to say that he was not considered to be of the highest quality. TANK had not been able to maintain an operational capability in 2008 and was sent to SME as a pool dog to help in training new dog handlers on their initial courses.
They had lost a dog, but in doing so, that dog saved the life of soldiers and vehicles. Not good luck, not bad luck, that's why I coined this account 'medium luck'. Craig rotated out and his position was taken over by Corporal David Simpson and EDD SARBI - and that was to become yet another story of heroism under fire plus a Hollywood movie style recovery of a military working dog that had been reported as missing in action for around fourteen months. Craig was promoted to Corporal and posted to 2CER in Brisbane as the EDD Section Commander. 2CER ramped up its training intensity for a deployment to Afghanistan. At the start of the ramp-up training in 2009, Craig did not have a dog - he lost RAZZ in Afghanistan in 2007. He had been seconded into the 2CER Regimental Police section for a few months during 2008.
Craig had some problems with TANK. He was timid around people and didn’t like loud noises. He would move on his own axis when sent out on a cast, meaning that he wandered wherever he wanted to go, and was a source of constant training attention for both Craig and Lance Corporal Josh Colbourne, Craig’s 2IC. Eventually, TANK improved and developed into a combat capable EDD. Another of TANK’s idiosyncrasies was that he did not provide a definite indication that he had found an item of interest. Being a dark coloured dog - Belgian Malinois, in this case with no tail - it was difficult to see him, particularly in areas where visibility was reduced, so he needed special attention when out-front looking for bad things in the battle space.
Afghanistan Fourth Deployment - 2010 The 2CER team to deploy to Afghanistan in 2010 included Craig with TANK, Lance Corporal Josh Collbourne with HARRY and Sapper Dave Brown with BUNDY. Other dog handlers would deploy to Afghanistan as a part of the rest of colleague on leave (ROCOL) plan when dog handlers who were in-country would go on leave for R&R. After arriving at TK, the initial induction training for the Uruzgan Province AO was completed and the section deployed to various Patrol Bases. Sapper Darren Smith and EDD HERBIE arrived at TK in March 2010.

Each Patrol Base contained at least one infantry platoon with armoured support and one of their tasks was to keep the roads open to friendly traffic. Engineer sections were embedded with the Patrol Base units and were employed on numerous missions ranging from combat engineer support, construction of buildings, maintenance of roads and points of interest, searching for caches and civilian construction and mentoring the local population on village projects. The EDD teams would travel with patrols. Their job was to detect explosives, IEDs, mines, caches, bomb making materiel and at times, people.
"
We were assigned to many patrols and the one thing I liked about TANK was that this dog could search forever without a break. He had a colossal work ethic and a huge play drive. He loved it.
"
Patrol Base Mashal was the biggest base - named a Command Operating Base - but had a reputation for having a road resupply challenge with its roads being targeted by the Taliban on numerous occasions. At times, in force. It was a dangerous place to be. Craig and TANK worked out of Patrol Base Mashal. In Craig’s words: We were assigned to many patrols and the one thing I liked about TANK was that this dog could search forever without a break. He had a colossal work ethic and a huge play drive. He loved it. But TANK did things differently to most of the other EDDs. Most of our dogs stay inside a box pattern of search. We control them but they constantly look back to see if we are wanting them to cast in a certain direction. TANK preferred to run his own search pattern and would literally wander at the trot. He would look back at me, and respond to my hand commands, but he preferred to cast at random.

Feature Story The Queensland Dog World
Continued from page 47 At first this irked me, but then I realised that TANK was under better control and searched a far greater area and in a shorter time when I let him do his own thing. As a result of this, TANK covered a large area and found a number of caches”. Here comes the good luck story. Craig continues: ”In one day he located four incredible finds. The first find took place at the base of a tree and we recovered a number of AK47 magazines loaded with ammunition. We resumed the patrol along a creek. I cast TANK down the creek and at the end of the cast he started to show interest to an area. TANK started to air up, by standing up on his hind legs and began to sniff in the direction of the right creek bank. I recalled TANK, then moved forward myself to investigate. I arrived in the area where TANK showed interest and saw a void a couple metres above my head. I climbed up the creek bank and took a look into the void. I looked straight at a huge quantity of ammunition, mortar rounds and ammunition containers. The sight of all this material gave me a shock because it was like looking at a warehouse of explosive material, bomb making gear and ammunition. It included plastic explosive and Ammonium Nitrate Aluminium Sulphate powder typically used in anti-vehicular IEDs. It turned out to be the biggest enemy cache to be found by any of our patrols up to that date. It took more than an hour for our troops to remove the explosives and associated stores and place them in a marijuana plantation above the creek for destruction. It was a huge find and one that made TANK an instant hero with the boys.
48 - December 2016
The patrol headed back towards Patrol Base Marshal with two EDD teams leading the way, one on each side of a number of irrigation aqueducts. TANK showed interest in a track leading away from the direction of travel, and located some mortar rounds cached in the ground. While the combat engineers dealt with that find, I sent TANK further down the track where he had another find, although small, stood out as one of his best. It was only a few sticks of Russian PE4 (plastic explosive), but the thing about this find was that it had no metal content which meant that there was no way the combat engineers would have found it using an electronic detector”. TANK located caches such as a number of large carbon-fibre pressure plates (non-metal) used for initiating IEDs, weapons and explosives. Although not trained to locate non explosive components, his interest in areas would result in searches that would turn up military items useful to the Taliban. On one patrol, Craig and TANK were searching aqueducts when they came upon a pedestrian bridge. It was a tight fit for TANK to get under the bridge, but he went in with alacrity. Craig stated: ” I directed TANK under the bridge, he went under the bridge but didn’t come back out. So I crawled under the timbers of the bridge and saw him indicating with his nose facing a rocket launcher and three Rocket Propelled Grenades”. All up TANK located 24 caches in his deployment. Although caches were important to hamper the enemy and their ability to strike coalition forces, a big boost to friendly force morale was that of IED detection and TANK was no slouch in that regard.
I rewarded TANK by playing with him using a rubberised ‘Kong’ toy. TANK is a Malinois - otherwise known as ‘land-sharks’ due to their incredible bite and sharp teeth - so throwing a tennis ball for him was disaster for the ball at first bite. A ‘Kong’ lasts longer with that dog”. That was the good luck story. On another day, Craig had some engineer mates in front of him and was asked to cast his dog forward. TANK went forward and on drawing level with another Sapper (Johnno), TANK stopped for what looked like as a little social visit. Craig asked Johnno to move back so that the dog could cast further without distraction. But TANK just stayed their and indicated almost where Johnno’s boots had been. Craig went forward and identified an IED just centimetres away from where Johnno had been standing. It was not a little social visit. Craig was not comfortable with his mates being in front of his dog, particularly in the areas of creek and river crossings. His memories of EDD RAZZ in 2007 were still raw and he did not want the dog to trigger another IED and take out a soldier at the same time. So he tried to get TANK to operate away from his human mates when searching areas such as entry and exit points through defiles. The Taliban were known to target these spots. The IEDs were sometimes laid by the Taliban close to the Patrol Bases. To counter this, there were a number of perimeter patrols conducted and on one of these, the patrol followed a large aqueduct flowing with water. On coming to a mud bridge, Craig and TANK located an IED. On investigation of TANK’s indication, Craig laid on his stomach and uncovered some tyre rubber which is used to protect a lot of IEDs from the weather.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
Feature Story The Queensland Dog World
That was all Craig needed to know and asked the lead combat engineer to move forward and recover the IED components. As the patrol had no EOD technician, the lead engineer uncovered the device and then moved to Craig and TANK’s position approximately 20m to the side. Not too much later, the IED exploded but caused no casualties. The enemy soldier who wanted to fire the bomb had been temporarily defeated by the Electro Magnetic Filter (EMF) devices worn by our soldiers to jam the radio frequency of mobile telephones. But when the EMF device was moved beyond the range of its effectiveness on that particular IED, the enemy soldier was able to fire his bomb - in this case to no effect. TANK was great on off-route mines as well. On one occasion the patrol was moving through a defile when TANK indicated to the side of it. On investigation, Craig discovered a shaped charge device containing ball bearings, nuts and bolts. This device was an improvised Claymore Mine that was designed to blast its murderous contents over a wide area causing as many casualties to our lads as possible. But TANK located it and the wiring and pressure plate were also captured. On the same day TANK located two more IEDs set on the sides of a road. He was a worker all right. TANK did not like small area route searches much. The road connecting Forward Operating Base Mirwais to Patrol Base Mashal, was searched on many occasions and it often brought up IEDs. TANK found one IED on that route, but probably found the job a bit boring when being closely controlled in tight box type searches. He preferred the open much more and adopted a wandering lope across the terrain.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
He demonstrated that when he was trotting across a farming paddock. The farmers were growing maize, marijuana and poppies. As he crossed this terrain, TANK indicated to a spot near a track and Craig identified a pressure cooker IED. The EOD technician fired it in place. The explosion was huge and this was another of TANK’s ”pet hates”. Loud noises and crowds of people were not in TANK’s frame of reference as being good spaces to be in. But, Craig was about to receive a gross bad luck event.
7 June 2010 One of Craig’s jobs as the EDD Section Commander was to visit his team when they were deployed at a distance from his Patrol Base. Craig spoke to Sapper Darren Smith on 5 June 2010 and then moved on to catch up with Sapper Dave Brown in the Mirabad Valley. On 7 June 2010, Craig visited Sapper Dave Brown and found a happy digger. Dave and BUNDY had completed a successful route search and located a couple of IEDs including a ”daisy chain” of three mortar bombs wired together designed to cause mayhem near a public bazaar.. Craig did not catch up with his 2IC, Lance Corporal Joshua Colbourne, because Josh was too far away, so he headed back to TK and from there intended to return to Patrol Base Mashal. As he was travelling in the vehicle, a radio message was relayed to Craig: ‘A dog has been killed and a couple of diggers wounded’. ”I knew that it must have been Smithy, and with him, SPR Jacob ”Snowy" Moerland because Snowy was Smithy’s number two (his cover-man)”. The driver of Craig’s Bushmaster was a 6RAR soldier who had grown up with Snowy in Gayndah in Queensland, and he was listening intently to the radio traffic.
During the trip back to TK, Craig wondered how serious the wounds were for both of his mates, but did not consider anything worse than that. On arrival at TK, Craig put TANK into his kennel and moved across to the engineer Command Post. The Officer there told Craig that Snowy had been KIA instantly and that Darren had died shortly after that. Craig went cold and didn’t want to believe what he just been told. He was stunned and shattered that he had lost two mates and a dog on one IED. Craig became angry. He had been trying to acquire EMF devices for his doggies. The design of the EMF device came in two bands codenamed ”the Red and the Green” (bands of radio frequency). This meant that the two devices together would cover a large number of radio frequencies thereby defeating the majority of mobile telephone IED initiators. But one on its own would only cover those frequencies within its limited range of frequencies. It was frustrating situation. And on 7 June 2010, it flared into a gut-wrenching piece of soul-searching for Craig. Neither Darren nor Snowy had been equipped with an EMF device. Perhaps the EMF devices would not have helped anyway - if that IED was victimactuated. Craig was now a combat engineer Section Commander who had suffered one of his own killed in action, his cover-man killed in action and a dog killed in action. He had his own EDD RAZZ killed in action in his previous deployment. He was a frustrated man and was awash with anguish and loss. But he had a job to do. So, he went back to Patrol Base Mashal with a broken heart but with a stronger determination to get his job done. This was a case of gross bad luck.
December 2016 - 49
Feature Story The Queensland Dog World
Continued from page 49 One part of Craig’s job was to assist in the investigation of post-IED incidents. He was tasked to assist in the investigation into a Bushmaster IED incident near the ”Green Belt”. The Green Belt needed to be cleared and Craig allocated two dog teams to the task. Sapper Shaun Ward (a recent arrival) and Sapper Shaun Laing and their dogs. The combat engineers doggies were happy for this arrangement as their dogs could cover a large area quickly where dense vegetation grew. However, there was another frustration. Having cleared an area of IEDs, the dog teams would go back again later and find more IEDs in almost the same places. In one case, Craig and Shaun Ward returned to the Green Belt and found an IED each in area they had cleared four days earlier. Nothing could be taken for granted in the search for IEDs. Craig and TANK found a cache that was protected by an IED. This caused some consternation with the infantry patrol because it meant a lengthy delay while an EOD technician travelled to the site to deal with it. This delay may have caused the patrol’s mission to be aborted. Precisely what the Taliban wanted. T h e I E D t h re a t w a s a n o n - g o i n g challenge and constant vigilance was needed to counter it. On the way back to TK after the Green Belt operation, the Bushmaster carrying a combat engineer team detonated an IED. Sappers Laing and Ward were tasked to search the area around the stricken vehicle. They cleared the area so that the wounded could be medevaced and the wrecked vehicle recovered. During the recovery, the Taliban opened fire on the group and a fire fight ensued. The two engineer doggies reverted to their infantry role and fought back.
50 - December 2016
No casualties were suffered by either side and the Taliban withdrew before heavier Australian fire support could be called in. It is a testament to the excellence in design and construction that the Australian designed and built Bushmaster armoured fighting vehicle never suffered a fatality of any crew or passengers during their deployments to the Afghanistan War. This includes Bushmaster vehicles having been seriously blown up on mines or IEDs, with one Bushmaster being as so badly damaged that it was unrepairable. A 'write off' and still no Australian soldier killed in action aboard it. A superb combat vehicle! On their final patrol in-country, Craig and TANK were searching along a road when he indicated to an IED on the side of the road. The patrol called in EOD support but found that the technician could not be brought to the IED before the next morning. So the patrol moved up to the top of a hill and hunkered down for the night. They discovered that they were located in a cemetery. The patrol remained there without incident, despite ”spooky” conversations during the night. They ”covered the EOD technician’s back” next morning while he dealt with the IED. In retrospect, TANK made 36 finds in a working period of about seven months. The deployment was for nine months but when you subtract leave and other down time, it comes down to seven months of work. This equates to something like a find every six days. And this was just one dog team in a section of four dog teams. In September 2010, Craig left TK and returned to Australia. On the way he collected HERBIE’s ashes to hand over to Darren’s war widow, Angela Smith (Ange).
HERBIE’s ashes had been very carefully scrutinised by RAAF Flight Lieutenant Cindy Chawner. FLTLT Chawner had made sure that HERBIE’s cremated remains were stored in an appropriate ashes urn and cleared them through the official Afghan system for onward movement to Australia. Corporal Craig Turnbull was tasked with the job of collecting the ashes and escorting them back to Australia and then handing them over to HERBIE’s parent unit, 2CER at Gallipoli Barracks in Brisbane. Craig delivered the ashes to his Commanding Officer, LTCOL John Carey, who called an informal regimental gathering in the unit’s 'Sportman’s Club'. The ashes were handed over to Ange. Ange interred HERBIE’s ashes with Darren in his war grave in the ANZAC Section of Pinnaroo Cemetery at Bridgeman Downs in Brisbane.
Lieutenant General Ken Gillespie meet Corporal Craig Turnbull The funeral service for Sapper Darren Smith was a huge event. Numerous people paid their respects to him including VIPs such as the Prime Minister Mr Kevin Rudd, Chief of Defence Force ACM Angus Houston AC AFC, the Chief of Army LTGEN Ken Gillespie AO DSC CSC, Brisbane Lord- Mayor Campbell Newman and many other dignitaries. At the completion of the service everyone was invited to the 2CER Sportsman’s Club to chat informally. While I (George Hulse) was talking to an old mate who was at that time the Chief of the Australian Army, LTGEN Ken Gillespie, we fell into a conversation about military working dogs.

Feature Story The Queensland Dog World
The conversation went like this: Hulse: ”Well Sir, have you had much to do with the dog teams at all?” Gillespie: ”Yes mate, I keep getting all this information across my desk about a dog named TANK. It appears that this dog is just amazing and has found a significant amount of dangerous items. I’m impressed!” Hulse: ” Yes, but what about the handler? There is a combat engineer at the other end of that invisible lead. Do you get any information about him?” Gillespie: ”Well not really” Hulse: ”So, you don’t know who he is?” Gillespie: ”No”. At this point in time I tapped a soldier (in uniform), who was standing near me, on the shoulder. He broke off his conversation with his mates, and turned to face me. I then made the back-tofront introduction of introducing the General to the soldier (not the other way around) with the words: ”Sir, this is Corporal Craig Turnbull. HE is the handler of TANK”. There was an awkward moment while the General and the Corporal found things to say to each other followed by the General shaking Craig’s hand enthusiastically and congratulating him on a job very well done. It was a gesture that Craig deserved - as does every dog handler in the ADF. It seems that most people concentrate on the dog and forget that there is a highly trained specialist controlling that dog. A dog team consists of a dog and a dog handler. In this case, the Chief of Army was receiving briefs on dogs that did not include the handler. The dog had been mentioned. The doggie had not. This doggie - Corporal Craig Turnbull - served on four overseas deployments, been wounded in action, lost two Sappers KIA and two dogs KIA during his watch and on his patch. Craig discharged from the Army in February 2011. In a book entitled 'Brothers By Choice', TANK is mentioned many times. In testament of how much this EDD team was appreciated by his military mates is represented by the quote; 'Tank and Spin always clearing the way'. Photo credits: Supplied by Mr George Hulse
