President’s Message
“
I
am hoping that our members are enjoying a return to a more normal line up of dog sports events and shows that we are experiencing in Queensland. Our winter weather tends to be wonderful so we should have many terrific weeks ahead. Recent COVID outbreaks down south are a salutary reminder not to become complacent and to take all sensible steps to protect our individual and collective health.
Presidents, Secretaries and Treasurers (PST) Meeting – Monday 12 July 2021 We have almost 200 clubs affiliated with Dogs Queensland. This total is made up of all breeds clubs, specialist breed clubs and an array of dog sports clubs that carry on our more than 20 disciplines throughout Queensland. These clubs are run by volunteers who make a fine contribution to our dog world. At Dogs Queensland we are keen to provide support to these clubs and communication happens in a number of ways, whether through the office or via directors. We also have an annual PST meeting and this is happening in a few weeks on Monday, 12 July at 7pm at the clubhouse. I encourage all our clubs to participate in this important forum. Communications around this meeting will be provided very shortly via Paw Prints.
The Limited Register, DNA Testing and Related Musings.... Members may recall that I have previously raised concerns about the increased use of the limited register by breeders. Our breeders have the option of registering their puppies on the main register with required DNA testing in Queensland, or registering the puppies (supposedly of lesser breed quality and not for breeding or showing) on the limited register. We have seen a surge in the use of the limited register here in Queensland and also in other States where DNA testing is not required and thus would not be a factor. I understand there are sensitivities around this issue but believe we need to engage on this issue.
I was most interested to read a message on 21 May 2021 from Dr Karen Hedberg BVSc, the President of Dogs NSW, that raises a number of the key issues. Karen has kindly agreed to the re-publishing of this aspect of her message and it follows my message here. In this context I would just mention a few additional matters. The first is that although Karen mentions the fact that a limited register dog cannot be shown, her prime focus is on the important impact on the gene pool and breeding. A continuing concern of mine is that selling a limited register puppy closes the door on that individual or family venturing into the show ring. Many of us would not now be in the dog world had we not had the opportunity to show that puppy and win that first ribbon. Sure, sometimes that puppy was not always the best breed quality, but it started a journey that can be a lifetime of dog world involvement. The second is that on original registration we allow our breeders to transfer the puppy directly into the new owner’s name, thus saving the breeder an additional transfer fee. This direct registration does not currently provide the option for a breeder to tick a box that the puppy is not for breeding as can happen with a subsequent transfer. This is a matter that we could address quite easily. Our wider dog world in Australia has changed pretty dramatically over the last number of years. It is so important and in the interests of our members, breeders, our dogs and the wider community that we keep pace and critically review key aspects of our operations. Please give some thought to the limited register and these issues and feel free to email the office on rob@dogsqueensland.org.au with your feedback. – Ulla Greenwood, President Dogs Queensland

Discussion on the use of the Limited Register
“
T
his week I thought I would put the “puppy” amongst the pigeons and mention a rather large elephant in the room, the Limited Register. At this point in time, the number of limited registrations is nearly equal to, and within quite a few breeds, exceeds the number of puppies placed on the Main Register. The Limited Register was originally brought in to place those puppies that were not up to scratch, had a genetic issue, did not comply to the breed standard (colour, coat..) and so on. Over time, more and more puppies have been placed on the Limited Register so that new owners could not breed from them and, heaven forbid, get into the hands of puppy farmers. These concerns are real, but have, I feel, been carried far beyond the initial concept. The Limited Register is now full of many sound puppies that have been placed there to limit access to bloodlines, in many cases by fellow breeders. This may force other breeders to import new bloodlines, a fact that can enhance the genetic pool available to breeders, but limits the potential of an excellent dog or bitch to have a positive effect on a breed. The end effect of limiting access to good puppies is that fewer new people can get access to any quality bloodstock, thereby reducing the show numbers and new people, who could be potential breeders, from entering the dog scene. We are in effect, cutting our own throats! Equally, many of these new people trying to get into the breeds and dog showing, loose heart when they cannot break in. They then go to the MDBA and the
like with their Limited Register puppies to get “official paperwork“ from them so that they can proceed to breed. It is all very counter productive in the long run. I would strongly urge breeders to think carefully before placing the majority of their puppies on the Limited Register. Encourage new people into the breed, support and advise them of the correct way to go about becoming involved in dog showing and breeding. If concerned, register these puppies on the Main Register with not for breeding on the back. This way these puppies can be exhibited and if the people love the sport (be it showing, obedience, agility, etc) and they want to take it further, and the puppy is a good example, allow the puppy to be upgraded on to the Main Register. Most other countries only have a single register. While I do not wish to go back to that system, we need to think hard and think ahead about the long term future of all of our breeds. We already have quite a large number of breeds that are on the “extinction” or “rare” cusp with less than 50 puppies born within that breed around Australia per year. The odds of these breeds surviving without new blood or breeders is poor. This is a message for all of us to have a long hard look at how we should responsibly register and manage the long term health and continuance of our beloved breeds. Dr Karen Hedberg, President Dogs NSW

Breed Feature
LAGOTTO ROMAGNOlO
The Lagotto Romagnolo is an ancient breed of water retrieving dogs originating in the lowlands of Comacchio and the marshlands of Ravenna. Over the centuries, the great marshlands were drained and turned into arable land. Subsequently, the breed changed from being a water dog to an excellent dog for searching for truffles in the flat open country and the hills of Romagna. 8
DOG WORLD May 2021
HISTORY The Lagotto Romagnolo is probably one of the most ancient breeds of water dog known as well as being an absolutely natural breed. Archaeological excavations in the Etruscan burial ground of Spina (close to the Comacchio region) have found hunting and fishing etchings on clay and terra-cotta pots dating to the fifth and sixth centuries, showing a curly, shaggy-haired dog extremely similar to the present day Lagotto Romagnolo. When water dogs arrived in Spain with the Moors, they had already been known through the whole Italian peninsula for centuries, but in particular in the wet and marshy areas of Northern Italy. The Barbet reached France after the Arab invasion of Spain and most scholars agree that the Barbet was the ancestor of the Poodle. The ‘Canis Aquaticus’ (Water Dog) was mentioned by Linneus, the great Swedish naturalist of the eighteenth century, as having been ‘widespread for long’ in the Mediterranean area, and especially that of the North. Linneus’ description of the dog corresponds surprisingly with that of the curly haired dog of Romagna. Eugenio Raimondi in his book ‘Delle Caccie’ - About Hunting (Venice, 1630), when discussing the water dogs that had always been popular in the Venetian lagoons wrote: ‘They do not fear to bring ducks to steep rocky places and being used to their noble duty, they do not fear to wet their backs and bottom, and bring their prey back to their master to please him. They are bristly and curly-haired dogs of the same colour as the reeds’.
companion, the small Lagotto Romagnolo, who also guarded the boat and house and retrieved ducks. He would dive and swim for hours at a time even in very cold weather when he may have had to break the ice. This ‘amphibian’ behaviour was made possible by its truly waterproof thick coat, with very close curls and abundant undercoat preventing the water from touching the skin; it was sufficient just to shake itself and the dog was perfectly dry. When the marshes were reclaimed the Lagotto Romagnolo progressively lost its function as a water dog and gradually specialised as a trufflehound. His great ability to search, his keen sense of smell and trainability made him very suitable for the task. Breeding in the early days was not controlled and had always been done to achieve practical results. Consequently, it tended to be between dogs closely related by blood. But in later years dogs were used that were not related, such as pointers, poodles etc and this was not justified or in the interests of the breed. Therefore, in the late 1970’s, a group of distinguished dog fanciers from Romagna, decided it was time to save the breed. Over twenty years seminars and meetings took place, dogs were examined, measured, tattooed and entered onto a Register with the result that the breed has evolved back again to a well-defined, homogenous type.
GENERAL APPEARANCE The Lagotto Romagnolo is a small to medium sized dog, well proportioned, powerfully built, of a rustic (hardy) appearance, with a dense, curly
Antonia Morri (Faenza 1840) in his ‘Household Technological Manual of Entries, Expressions, Proverbs, Popular Sayings and Idioms of Romagna’ described the ‘Can Lagott’ as a ‘thick-furred truffle or marsh dog’ or as ‘bristly-haired water or truffle dog’. This indicates that even then, the Lagotto Romagnolo was being transformed from a water dog to a truffle-hound. There is unquestionable evidence that the Lagotto Romagnolo was present in the lagoons of Comacchio and the marshy areas of the lowland plains of Romagna as early as 1600. The inhabitants of the flat marshlands were known as ‘Lagotti’ and they used small dogs with very curly hair. They also went searching for truffles with their inseparable

coat of woolly texture. The immediate impression is of his hardy, sensible appearance, followed by an impression of athletic strength and nobility in spite of his small size. Nobility (which is not his only distinction) is essential to the breed in order to express the type which is also derived from his shape, colour and bearing. The Lagotto Romagnolo has a body to height ratio of about 85/88; a body almost as high as it is long, which tends to be contained within a square. He has moderate, harmonious and shapely body structure.
CHARACTERISTICS This small ‘king of the woods’ is, and should remain, a typical working dog. He is endowed with great endurance and agile, graceful movement, and the people who are not truffle searchers can also appreciate this breed for its attractive appearance and excellent temperament and companionship.
TEMPERAMENT A natural gift for searching and its very good nose has made the breed very efficient in truffle searching. The former hunting instinct has been eliminated, hence his work is not distracted by the

scent of game. The Lagotto Romagnolo is tractable, undemanding, keen, affectionate, very attached to his owner and easy to train. He is a very good companion and also an excellent watch-dog. Its lively intelligence, personality and sensible character make it a pleasant and often irreplaceable companion, not only for those who see dogs as workers but also those who see them as a friend and companion with whom to share everything, in good times and bad, until
COAT Of woolly texture, somewhat rough in surface, forming tightly curled, ring-shaped curls with the undercoat shining through. Curls must be evenly distributed all over the body, except on the head, where the curls are less tight, forming wellfurnished eyebrows, whiskers and beard. Even the cheeks are covered with dense hair. The top coat and especially the undercoat are waterproof. If not clipped, the hair tends to become felted; therefore a complete clipping must be performed at least once a year. Felted topcoat and undercoat must be removed periodically.
COLOUR Off-white solid colour, white with brown or orange patches, brown roan, brown solid colour (in different shades), or orange solid colour. A brown to dark brown mask is acceptable. Every shade of brown is permitted while black is not allowed. SIZE Height at withers: Dogs from 43 to 48 cm Ideal height — 46 cm

What We Should See When A Lagotto Romagnolo Moves From day to day and show to show we see more and more representatives of our beloved breed. There are a lot of questions and a lot of thoughts about how a Lagotto should look. The Lagotto Romagnolo is a working dog, and his purpose is to work for a long time in difficult terrain and for long periods, and his structure should follow his purpose. First impressions sometimes can bluff us. Seeing a stacked dog in show ring for this rustically coated dog is not enough. The real picture can be seen when we make these dogs move. What we see, or what we should see, is an ‘energetic trot with reach and drive… lively and balanced.’ As we all know, the ability to recognise correct and incorrect movement is an essential element of dog knowledge. Correct movement depends on the basis principles of good structure, which is determined by the dog’s purpose. Generally speaking, every dog should move forward with the least amount of effort. Effortless movement is good movement. The gait of the Lagotto is characterised by the loose and cheerful trot that reflects the deep, deep joy in performing his function. This is what we need to see also on the show ground, and image how this dog flows in nature. This is not a hunting dog, and he doesn’t need to run after animals; he doesn’t need to run anywhere – the speed is not his purpose, rather instead a diligent search for truffles. Movement in the ring is often quicker than the eye can follow, and evaluation is sometimes hard, but we all have to look for the carriage of the head, neck, back and spinal column. Watching them on the move, they do appear as a slight curve moving forward, with no waste of motion. Correct neck is fundamental to the function that this region plays in the cephalic-cervical balance (neck with the head) moving the center of gravity forward. The Lagotto’s neck is strong and muscular, well set off from the nape, slightly arched, with the length little less than the total
12
DOG WORLD May 2021
length of the head. Looking at the Lagotto’s forequarters, we can expect a high and long forearm, which contributes to making the dorsal line straight, and a well inclined shoulder, allowing for wide and powerful steps. Usually we can say that hindquarters are the engine of the dog, the source of the power and locomotion, and the Lagotto should have powerful, upright and well-proportioned hindquarters. We will end with the tail of the Lagotto, which provides the counterbalance necessary to perform difficult manoeuvres such as climbing, jumping or walking along narrow structures. When the Lagotto moves, the tail can be brought in line with the spine or even higher. When excited, it can be more or less raised on its back, but never curved like the tail of an Italian Volpino dog (or American Akita), or straight up like that of a terrier. For a working dog like a Lagotto who must have character and temperament, tail between the legs is a serious fault. In the end, all this mechanism of movement of the Lagotto we could describe as very freeflowing stride and should not bob up and down. There should be no apparent disturbance of the topline, and the complete picture should be that of a dog flowing over the ground, with all the parts of the anatomy in complete harmony like all in nature is. Gastroenteritis
Joanne Bibby – Fursafe®
CAUSES OF GASTROENTERITIS
When I was a child and my friends said they were off school because of ‘Gastro’ I thought, with a bit of a giggle, that they ‘just’ spent the night in the ‘you know what’ (the W.C., the powder room, the loo), but that was only because I didn’t know any better.
The following may inflame your dog’s gastrointestinal tract:
‘Gastro’, otherwise known as Gastroenteritis is, in reality, a condition where the lining of the stomach and/or intestines becomes inflamed and what comes with it is some pretty nasty symptoms.
• A reaction to ingesting new, spoiled foods or dead wildlife.
Turns out, Gastroenteritis is a common and infectious condition, especially when I was a kid back in the 60’s and 70’s. This was maybe due to reduced awareness and health and safety practices back then – a condition no one really dared discuss given the loo business! Unless you had experienced Gastro you couldn’t possibly know how painful it could potentially be!
• Intestinal Parasites. • Food sensitivities and/or allergies.
• Obstruction within the intestines. •
And then there are other medical conditions such as Cancer, genetic diseases or having a predisposition based on the breed, ulcers and viruses e.g. Parvovirus, Distemper.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS To reduce, limit or halt the risk of your dog becoming sick, consider the following:
So, if Gastroenteritis could cause you to feel seriously unwell, what would it be like for your dog!!
• Speak to your Vet about the best preventive intestinal parasitic medications for your dog.
The best way to stop Gastroenteritis in its tracks is to prevent it. To do this we need to know what causes it and then reduce or limit that cause from the daily lives of our dogs.
•
14
DOG WORLD May 2021
If you want to change your dog’s food, incorporate a small amount within your current food/previous food for 5-7 days to give your dog a chance to get used to it.
• Keep your dog on a short leash whilst outside until you check that the area is safe from foods or dead wildlife.
2. Treat for Shock: Wrap dog in blanket securely and place in crate or box. Raise their bottom by placing a blanket underneath them.
• Don’t feed your dog old food from the fridge. If you wouldn’t eat it, don’t let them.
3. If possible: In separate containers, collect a sample of vomit and a sample of dog’s faeces and give to the Vet.
• Discuss new medications and/or conditions with your Vet in regards to potential side effects. • Talk to your Breeder or to the Vet about predispositions or genetic diseases for your breed type. • If you have a new Vet, inform them of current medications and discuss potential contradictions.
SIGNS & SYMPTOMS Your dog may show some or all of the following: • Decreased appetite. • Fatigue. • Severe episodes of vomiting – will appear foamy and yellow in colour, for example: bile, alternating with dry heaving/retching. • Severe episodes of diarrhoea – will look quite dark and gritty or tar-like, for example: bleeding in stomach. • If not diarrhoea, faeces my appear soft and pale in colour, with streaks of red or undigested food. • Dog’s abdomen would be painful for dog if touched. • Dog refuses to be handled around abdomen and back legs. • Low Fever. • Dehydration which could be fatal if left untreated.
ACTION 1. Undertake Primary Assessment a.
Check the airway for blockages or foreign objects – remove if there is. If your dog has been vomiting finger swipe or use a tongue depressor to scoop out the vomit.
b.
Check the breathing (respirations) e.g., count the rise and fall of the chest – start artificial respiration if not breathing. Is the breathing normal or shallow, fast or not breathing? Monitor all the way to the Vet!
c. Check circulation (pulse) – does your dog have a pulse? Start CPR if no pulse.
4. Speak soothingly and stroke to keep calm and quiet. 5. Transport to Vet. 6. If you are on your own driving your dog to the Vet you will likely be very distracted by your dog’s condition. You must be vigilant on the road. If you have someone to drive you: • Sit in the back with your dog. • Monitor during transport to vet to make sure your dog is breathing. • If your dog stops breathing, begin artificial respiration. • If your dog’s heart stops beating, begin CPR.

A healthy weight starts with healthy habits A healthy weight is key to your dog’s general health and wellbeing. We conclude our series, courtesy of Royal Canin, on Healthy Growth.
Weight Management – Healthy Growth HEALTH GROWTH LASTS A LIFETIME Losing weight is more difficult than preventing weight gain in the first place, so it’s important that healthy habits and behaviours are set from day one.
HOW MUCH EXERCISE DOES A PUPPY NEED EVERYDAY?
Exercise for puppies who will grow into larger dogs needs to be carefully monitored for a longer period of time – they may grow quickly but they mature slowly. They won’t achieve adulthood until they are between 18 and 24 months. Always take care to look for signs of tiredness or even exhaustion in any puppies. They may start to feel uncomfortable or ache with too much exertion, which can take the fun out of their play. If you spot your puppy beginning to tire, stop for today and do a little less tomorrow. They’ll soon catch up.
A PUPPY’S DIFFERENT NEEDS AT EACH STAGE Puppies of all breeds change rapidly as they grow up. When you’re raising a puppy week-by-week,

When it comes to giving guidance on how much exercise a puppy needs, it is very difficult to give a precise answer. The simple truth is that the amount of exercise a puppy should have, depends on each individual puppy.
As a start point however, consider your dog’s size and breed type. Smaller dogs tend to mature to adulthood at between 6 and 12 months old and therefore are able to tolerate increased levels of exercise at an earlier age.

it can be helpful to be aware of how their needs change. Understanding the different stages of their development can help you prepare and feel confident that you’re giving your puppy the best start possible. The developmental changes your puppy will experience from birth can have a significant impact on their need for the right nutrition and exercise. During puppyhood, lots of things will happen. Your pet’s adult teeth will appear, its adult fur will come through, and its skeleton and organs will grow. As all these changes take place, it’s vital that your puppy gets all the nutrition they need – and that care is taken not to overfeed, which could cause unnecessary weight gain.

A HEALTHY WEIGHT STARTS WITH HEALTHY HABITS One of the best ways to ensure that your puppy grows into a happy and healthy dog is to instil appropriate feeding and exercise habits from the beginning. Whatever your puppy’s breed, age and activity levels, you can help them to maintain a healthy shape in a number of simple ways. When it comes to feeding your puppy, take care to provide puppy food in the correct portion size as your pet reaches each different developmental stage. Say no to any begging behaviour in your puppy to keep their food intake in check. Finally, including any treats in your pet’s daily portion of food will help to maintain a healthy weight and shape as they grow. Remember, treats should only account for up to 10% of your puppy’s daily portions. Checking in regularly with your vet will help you meet your puppy’s needs at each developmental milestone as it grows up.
SPEAK TO YOUR VET As your puppy develops and grows into an adult dog, it’s important to make sure that you’re aware of their changing needs at each developmental stage. Speaking to your vet and asking any questions you have will help you to feel comfortable that you’re meeting your pet’s needs as they grow. Veterinary advice and support are especially important when it comes to making any changes to your pet’s diet, or if you suspect that something may be affecting your puppy’s health. Your vet can help you with setting appropriate, healthy dietary and exercise habits for your pet from the start. Calling on a professional opinion will put your mind at ease from the start and help you help your puppy to grow into a happy and healthy dog.

Dog Sports – HERDING
This month we showcase the Continental Herding Club’s (CHC) first herding trials and tests of the year on the weekend of 15 and 16 May 2021 at Postman’s Ridge Qld 4352. After such a disrupted 2020, it was great seeing the up-and-coming dogs and handlers who excelled in their respective tests on Saturday. A variety of breeds were represented: Briards, German Shepherd Dogs, Belgian Shepherd Dogs – Groenendael and Tervueren, Border Collies, Bouvier Des Flandres and Sporting Register dogs. They participated in Herding Instinct Certificate (HIC) and/or Herding Test (HT) and/or Pre-Trial Test (PT). Each of these levels is a standardised test of the dog’s instinct and trainability to work with the handler to move stock. Most came away with passes in their tests, and all came away with a sense of achievement and knowledge that their dogs still have the herding instinct that they were originally bred for. Sunday saw the running of one of the ANKC trial courses – A Course. This all-around farm style course is where dogs are required to gather stock and move them through a number of obstacles before eventually penning the stock. There were entrants in the Advanced, Novice and Started levels of this course type across two trials. There was a Border Collie and Belgian Shepherd Dog –
Laekenois entered as well as a number of Sporting and/ or Associate Register dogs represented. Handler experience ranged from the seasoned competitor to the first time trial entrant. However, it was very clear that everyone has spent a lot of time and effort on their skills and it showed on the trial field, as all dogs/handlers obtained at least one qualification during the two trials – with some also obtaining their title for their level. The Continental Herding Club (CHC) would like to thank all the people involved with the running of the trial – those being the judges, scribes, stock handlers, course setters and stock/land owners. Every bit of help goes a long way and is very much appreciated.
INFORMATION ON HERDING For further information about how you and your dog can become involved in herding, please contact the Continental Herding Club via our Facebook page.

Mental Health Benefits Of Owning A Dog – Olivia Santos: Professional writer and dog lover A dog is man’s best friend right? Could they also be your furry therapist? ...No, they can’t. But what they can do is impart some much needed mental fortitude through tough times. It’s safe to say we have gone through some of the toughest times in human history in the past 12 months. It’s no coincidence that adoption rates of dogs have gone through the roof as many seek solace in the comfort of canine cuddles. There are scientifically researched ways in which your dog can make your life a little brighter. From reducing loneliness to helping you cope with trauma, dog ownership can help transform your mental wellbeing. Here are three scientifically proven ways that owning a dog can improve your mental health.
Dogs can make you feel less lonely Isolation is a huge side effect of the 2020/21 lockdown. We feel trapped in our bubbles and unable to connect in ways we could before. A dog may be the antidote to isolation and loneliness.
Your dog doesn’t just become another sentient, important being in your life, they can connect you to other potential connections that help your social life flourish!
Dogs can lower your anxiety Anxiety is a pandemic of a different kind. With adults, teens and children even suffering from more anxiety disorders than ever before, a soothing presence of your dog’s gentle face may just be the cure. In a study of over 600 children, only 12% of children with dogs in their homes showed symptoms of child anxiety. This is opposed to 21% of children without dogs in their homes. The researchers suggested that children with dogs may be less anxious because of the bubbly, fun, sociable nature of our lovable canines. Dogs increase play, social interaction with other humans, responsibility, and general feelings of companionship and love. These are all key factors to having a solid sense of wellbeing and avoiding stress. The responsibility aspect is particularly interesting. The implication is that by caring for another being, a child learns independence, empathy, and compassion. And
A small Australian 2019 study split participants into three groups. Those who newly adopted a dog, those who were thinking of adopting a dog, and those with no desire to own a dog. The new adopters reported a dramatic drop in feelings of loneliness within just 3 months!
But that’s not all. 82.4% of the participants said that they met new people in their neighbourhood because of their dog. 35.3% said that they made a new friend because of their adventures with their dog.

Owning and raising a dog means connecting with them and not just on a surface level. You will care for them, play games and buy the best dog toys for them, share memories with them and interact with them in a deep and fulfilling way. This may not be surprising to you. After all, having a four-legged friend around makes you literally less alone in your life.
Dogs can help you cope during a crisis Okay, so loneliness and anxiety may be obvious factors to you. But this past year has been life destroying to some. A year of loss, pain, and instability that we’ve never seen before. How could a dog possibly contend with such a gigantic crisis of confidence and despair? Ah, you underestimate the power of the canine! In a 2018 psychiatric study of military veterans suffering from PTSD, the results were miraculous. Participants with a service dog as a companion had far less severity in their PTSD symptoms. They also felt less angry, anxious and sleep-deprived. After seeing such tragedy and crisis, their dogs made the veterans feel comforted and supported through their recovery.
A dog is not a therapist So science says that dogs are little guardian angels that transform our mere mortal mental health, right? Not quite. While dogs are incredibly perceptive, emotionally intelligent, gentle beings, they also take up a lot of time and care. A dog can help you to cope through difficult periods of your life, but never let that be your motivation for adopting or buying an unsuspecting pooch who was not built for human baggage. It is vital that you ensure you are mentally sound enough to properly care for and love your dog the way they deserve to be loved and cared for. A dog cannot fix you. A dog cannot heal you. Adopting a dog is very much like having a furry toddler. You don’t expect a toddler to be your therapist now, do you? By owning a dog, you’ll find that many moments of joy and levity come from just being around them. They will make you laugh, open up your social life, and even help you to exercise more consistently. Through their sense of fun and natural intuition, they can certainly make you feel less alone in this world. But they can only give what you are giving. If you are willing to show up for them as a warm, loving carer and companion, they will surely do the same for you. Reproduced with the kind permission of: gentledogtrainers.com.au
Mushroom Toxicity
After the warmth of sunny days and rain, a lot of you may have noticed the influx of mushrooms growing in backyards and parks. But did you know mushrooms can be fatal to our pets? Mushroom poisoning occurs as a result of ingesting toxic mushrooms and symptoms can greatly vary depending on the type eaten. Symptoms can be fatal causing acute liver and kidney destruction or effect the nervous or gastrointestinal system. Common Symptoms: • Vomiting • Diarrhoea • Abdominal pain • Weakness • Lethargy • Wobbly • Salivation • Seizures • Coma • Yellowing of skin (jaundice)
Pixabay
guess what? Those attributes are just as important to us in adulthood. Caring for our dog well makes us feel like proud fur-parents.
99% of mushrooms are safe, but that 1% can be fatal and one toxic mushroom is toxic enough to kill a grown man. Some good rules apply for avoiding poisonous mushrooms: 1. Avoid mushrooms with white gills (underside), a skirt or ring on the stem and a bulbous or sack like base called a volva. 2. Avoid mushrooms with red on the cap or stem. 3. Finally if any doubt, remove it immediately from your pets reach or yard! Liver toxic mushrooms in Queensland – Amanita phalloides (Death Cap Mushroom) – Amanita ocreata (Angel of Death) – Lepiota (False Parasol) – Galerina Typically, 10 to 12 hours pass between consumption and the onset of clinical signs. Please seek immediate veterinary attention if in doubt or your pet has ingested any form of mushroom. Republished with the kind permission of the Booval Vet Hospital (07) 3282 6722

Social Media Update #DOGWORLD LEADING THE WAY – David Margan, Communications Consultant It was quality not quantity for our social media platforms during the first quarter of this year! Leading the way was April’s #DogWorld Corgi cover post which coincidentally timed with the passing of HRH Prince Phillip. The Queen and the late Prince Phillip received a real (born in) Pembrokeshire Corgi as a wedding present almost 73 years ago! The ANZAC Day Facebook post about Dogs Queensland’s ANZAC dog monument that celebrates the contribution of all War and Service dogs was a hit, with over 8,225 people viewing this post, with 205 likes and 75 shares! ‘Bindi Man’, aka our Communications consultant, David Margan, has topped the pops in likes for his volunteering efforts removing, by hand, three garbage bags of the dreaded South African Bindi from our Durack show rings and walk ways. Our post about barn dogs that featured in #DogWorld magazine certainly proved how popular our dog sports really are as many people put their hand up to
join in, viewed by 14,197 with 89 likes, 48 comments and 42 shares! Barn Hunt is currently being trialled as a new dog sport in Australia. The sport tests a dog’s natural instinct to locate and quarry vermin or similar in a simulated environment! #trending We are aiming for 10,000 followers on our Dogs Queensland public Facebook page this year! So keep up the great work sharing, following and engaging with this page and our Instagram page too. Help us continue to put the spotlight on Dogs Queensland’s by liking not only the Dogs Queensland Members page but also our Dogs Queensland Facebook and Instagram pages too. Do you have photos of your dogs in the show ring or doing their own thing at home that you’re willing to share for social media purposes? If so, please send photos and any ideas for social media to communications@dogsqueensland.org.au
DOGS QUEENSLAND LOVES DOG TALES Members are invited to submit dog related stories of interest for inclusion in upcoming issues of our Dog World magazine. Whether they are unusual, quirky or factual – all canine topics are acceptable including ‘paw-friendly’ walks, heart-warming tales or pandemic antics to name a few. Dogs Queensland would like to showcase your dog’s story to the wider canine community. Simply send them through to barbara@dogsqueensland.org.au

Centenary Celebrations
– David Margan, Communications Consultant
Even though we are so fortunate to be in Queensland, COVID-19 has overturned many things in our lives. Imagine, for example, if you’re about to celebrate your Centenary! So having to cancel it because of COVID restrictions is no minor matter but that’s exactly what happened to the Mackay Kennel Club in 2020. Celebrating the exact date is crucial. But its hard to keep a good dog down and so the club will joyfully celebrate the achievements of a 100 years on the weekend of June 5 and 6, 2021. The weekend will be open to the public with displays
and activities conducted throughout the weekend including a “Pampered Pooch Parade” for community members to participate in on the Saturday morning prior to the commencement of the shows. The local Regional Council is one of our major sponsors for this event and have supported the Club with the approval of a $7, 500 grant towards equipment and other requirements for the event. An afternoon tea will be provided for all in attendance on Saturday 5 June 2021 at 3pm at the Muller Park Clubhouse, Rainlover Street, Ooralea. On behalf of all the members and executive of Dogs Queensland may we wish the club the very best – 100 years is a magnificent achievement.

THAT’S A EUKANUBA™ DOG
Nutrition that helps fuel your dog’s performance Dogs that show and perform need high quality nutrition to help fuel and sustain their performance throughout the day. A diet with high quality protein is important to help maintain and rebuild muscle integrity, in-fact around about 30% of this protein is used to help maintain a healthy skin and coat. The diet also needs to be enriched with omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids to help with the structural and barrier properties of skin and provide a shiny coat. Show and performance dogs also need a diet to help minimise oxidative stress and add support to the digestive system to help them perform at their best. Eukanuba’s™ NEW Premium Performance Sport and Exercise are designed to meet the needs of show and performance dogs, and is now made in Australia. With added levels of omega oils, digestive support and joint support*, Eukanuba™ is providing tailored nutrition to help to show and performance dogs achieve their best. *Compared to old formula
