ogs Queensland Members residing in the Ipswich City Council (“the Council”) area would have been concerned about recent correspondence from that Council advising that the reduced annual registration rate for entire dogs owned by our members was removed and that there would be no distinction between Dogs Queensland members and other residents in the council area with entire dogs. Together with our General Manager, Rob Harrison, Director Carolyn Ryan and Media Consultant, David Margan, I met yesterday with the key council officer, Mr Haiden Taylor, who heads up the Animal Management and Biosecurity Compliance Branch in the Planning and Regulatory Services Department in the Council. As I understand it, there has been a review of the fees and charges and Mr Taylor had taken the view that the rebate or discount provided to members of the Canine Control Council (Queensland) Ltd was contrary to section 52 of the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008. I take a different view. That provision is as follows-:

“ HOT FOIL STAMPING SPECIALIST ” PHONE: ( 02 ) 47741809 EMAIL: marellen@marellenshowribbons.com ADDRESS: 109 Silverdale Rd Silverdale N.S.W. 2752 WEB: www.marellenshowribbons.com “ FIND US ON FACEBOOK FOR FAST COMMUNICATION ”

52 Registration fee must be fixed to give desexing incentive (1) This section applies to a relevant local government in fixing the registration fee for a dog usually kept or proposed to be kept in the local government’s area. (2) The local government must fix the fee to give the owner of the dog an incentive to desex it. Example of an incentive to desex a dog— fixing a lower registration fee for a dog that is desexed. It is clear to me that the Council has been compliant with the Act by providing a desexing incentive to dog owners in the Council area in having a lesser registration fee for desexed dogs. Dogs Queensland members justifiably attract the lesser registration fee for their entire dogs due to the special contribution they make on a range of fronts. This includes reputable dog breeding and the engagement with their dogs in a range of disciplines that include Obedience, Agility, Dog Showing and Flyball with our affiliated clubs all geared to ensure happy, well-adjusted dogs in a cross section of homes across the Ipswich community.

4

DOG WORLD June 2022

In addition, the Council has the ambit under its regulations to use the expertise of Dogs Queensland in breed identification in its day-to-day operations. At the meeting we put a strong case to this effect with Mr Taylor. We recommended that Mr Taylor obtain legal advice from the Council lawyers about the correct legal interpretation of Section 52 of the Act. We also expressed concern about the lack of consultation on this matter with Dogs Queensland. It seems that there has already been negative feedback regarding this fee change increasing the registration fee by more than 130% to around $180 for an entire dog owned by a Dogs Queensland member in the Council region. The relevant Committee has asked for a report that I understand has already been provided by Mr Taylor. They have a meeting mid June with the Council meeting happening at the end of June. We have requested a meeting with the Council Chief Executive and also the Mayor. Hopefully that will be scheduled in the near future. If you reside in the Ipswich local council area, I recommend that you contact and / or write to your local councillor as soon as possible expressing your concern about the removal of this discount for entire dogs owned by Dogs Queensland members (links and information below). YUGGERA CANINE CLUB AND DOGS QUEENSLAND WEEKEND – FROM FRIDAY 10 JUNE THROUGH TO MONDAY 13 JUNE 2022 What a super long weekend this will be! All our clubs are special, but the Yuggera recognition of our First Nation people is great. Members and guests are invited to attend the Smoking Ceremony and Acknowledgement on Sunday 12 June 2022 at 4.30pm. It is super that we have a combination of dog shows and dog sports happening over this weekend. So don’t miss out on being a part of the fun. We have the FCI A20 CAC shows on the Friday night with the lovely focus just on breeds and groups followed by three champ shows and an open show over the next 3 days. Great that there will be a special trophy for the Best Overall Sporting and Conformation Exhibit over the Friday and Saturday shows and the Sunday trial with Tricks and Rally.

We have a terrific line up of sponsors and of course super panels of interstate judges. The 1 to 4 Group system will also include the Junior class with a Best Overall Puppy in Breed, Group and Show. And the weather forecast looks brilliant! DNA TESTING It’s a controversial issue but I am keen to get it out there in the membership for discussion and feedback. I have always had difficulty understanding the rationale for exempting limited puppy registrations from DNA testing. As I see it, the integrity of our breed register is of paramount importance. It was fine to trial exempting limited puppies from this requirement, but I think this has had some unintended consequences. The limited register should be for puppies determined by the breeder to be clearly unsuitable for showing or breeding. Since introducing this DNA testing exemption we have seen limited litter registrations increase in an unrealistic way. A key concern I have is that new people who buy a limited register puppy have the door closed on the option of showing their puppy and perhaps developing an interest in getting involved in our dog world. All food for thought. Stay warm, get those flu and Covid vaccines and hopefully enjoy more sunny days with your dogs.

AUSTRALIAN KELPIE

DOG WORLD June 2022

– Di Kent (Oatland Kennels)

HISTORY In the 1800s Australia emerged as one of the world’s biggest wool producers and became the focal point for thousands of prospective graziers. These migrants brought with them stock dogs of their homelands from which the Kelpie originated. It is important to note that the Kelpie was not bred from Border Collies or Dingoes, as is commonly documented, but instead a dog specially bred to work in Australia’s variable and harsh conditions. This wonderful breed came from two black and tan short coated pricked eared Collies imported in the 1860s. A bitch pup came into the possession of JD Gleeson and he named her ‘Kelpie’ meaning water sprite. About the same time, a Victorian imported Brutus and Jenny which were mated on the voyage and produced a litter. Kelpie and a son from Brutus and Jenny were mated and whelped a pup, which was given to the C T W King and was known as King’s Kelpie. King’s Kelpie made the name ‘Kelpie’ a household word following her win in Australia’s first sheep dog trial. Stockmen everywhere wanted a ‘Kelpie’ pup, and by the early 1890s the Kelpie as a strain was well established. Drovers say a good Kelpie is worth two men on horseback – a claim that has helped build the popularity of the Kelpie. An estimated 80,000 are working on properties around the country.

of the head produce a rather fox-like expression, softened by the almond-shaped brown eyes. Kelpies come in seven colours – black, black and tan, red, red and tan, fawn, chocolate and smoke blue. They have a double coat, with a short dense undercoat which lies flat, so it is rain resistant, but is longer under the body to behind the legs and around the neck where it forms a ruff. The pointed pricked ears give an accurate visual indication of the intelligence of the breed and its willingness to learn.

TEMPERAMENT Today’s Kelpie is still a valuable farm dog while also showing its versatility as a Show, Obedience, Agility, Tracking and Companion Dog. They have participated in pet therapy programs and have been used as Guide Dogs. On the working front, they are now found in many countries all over the world, working sheep, cattle, goats and even reindeer. As companion dogs, Kelpies have no equal. They are loving, gentle and kind, easily house trained and just want to be part of the family. Their greatest joy is being on the receiving end of their owner’s tender loving care, while its greatest disappointment is inactivity and lack of attention. Obedience provides a great way of getting to know and share the needs of this highly intelligent breed of dog. They make excellent watchdogs and have the courage of a lion and will defend their owners at

APPEARANCE The general appearance of the Australian Kelpie should be that of a lithe, intelligent, alert dog showing hard muscular conditioning, conveying its almost unlimited stamina and incredible working capacity. It is paramount that the Kelpie be sound both physically and mentally, for without these attributes they cannot and will not be able to perform the duties for which they were bred – a working sheepdog. They should be outgoing and friendly and look intelligent: eager and alert, yet gentle – the shape and contours

the risk of their own lives. The Kelpie is free from most inherited diseases and is a relatively low maintenance dog and easy to feed. Intelligent, the Australian Kelpie will attempt to dominate its surroundings and the owner must display calm, firm authority over the dog at all times. With the right type of owner and proper amount of daily mental and physical exercise, this breed can excel. Being a working dog, the Kelpie needs daily exercise to keep happy and healthy which includes freedom to run in a very big yard or regular long walks. Although adaptable to all environments, if you are unable to spend the necessary time and effort required to exercise your dog and understand its natural instincts and needs for leadership, then owning a Kelpie is not for you. It craves companionship, making it amongst the most social of breeds.

GENERAL Grooming: An average shedder, this breed is easy to groom. An occasional combing and brushing is all that is needed. Bathe when necessary, as it will remove all the natural oils in the weather resistant coat and dry out the skin. Life Expectancy: When considering a Kelpie please realise you are taking it on for its lifetime which is usually between 10 – 16 years. Average Size: Height at the shoulder Dogs – 46-51cms (18-20 ins) Bitches – 43-48cms (17-19 ins) Compatibility with other pets: Excellent

The Zookeeper - Joel Fergie

Joel Fergie, also known as The Zookeeper, created the painting of ‘Megs’, a local working Kelpie who comes from Dawson River Kelpies, in Moura Queensland in 2019. Having arrived in the town to work on a water tower artwork project Joel soon realised he had a few extra days free and with the help of some of the town locals and community groups, organized another large wall to paint. After meeting a few of the locals he eventually learned of Nicky Lorimer who runs a cattle property outside of Moura. Nicky, along with her family, have a range of Kelpies on their farm. She is also an incredible photographer and working dog trainer. Joel visited the property and met a few of the dogs – ‘Megs’ stood out as a leader of the pack. Nicky had a classic photograph of ‘Megs’ with a big cheeky grin poking her head through the stock gates and he knew it would make a beautiful painting. The following day he began the artwork on one of the larger walls in the main street of town. Joel worked on this piece for a couple of days. While painting, he invited a few local emerging artists down and showed them some techniques he uses for painting on a large scale. He welcomed the opportunity to meet local artists

16

DOG WORLD June 2022

and learn a little more about the town. This painting was one of those special paintings where he just smiled the whole time. After finishing the work, he had a heap of lovely feedback and was asked to come back again later that year. He brought a few friends along and they painted a few more works in town. It’s a beautiful and welcoming part of Central Queensland. MORE ABOUT ‘THE ZOOKEEPER’ – JOEL FERGIE: Joel Fergie is a Sunshine Coast based artist whose large-scale artworks span from inner city urban laneways to remote regional communities throughout Central Australia. His large-scale murals found on water towers and grain silos aim to disassemble the routines of daily life. Through nature, his work looks to bring feelings of positivity to people in public spaces. Growing up in Darwin, Northern Territory, an ever-present fascination with the Australian wilderness shaped The Zookeepers’ passion for the environment. Through an adventurous childhood exploring remote communities across northern Australia, Joels’ art looks to share stories of those which go often under the radar.

As street art expands from urban spaces into regional and remote spaces, The Zookeeper looks to explore the impact of this modern art form on those in these unique places. When creating public works, The Zookeeper looks to create strong relationships with the people within the communities in which his artworks sit. These relationships are integral in the development of the themes and concepts within his artwork. When creating an artwork in a public space, The Zookeeper looks to develop themes which reflect the people in which these artworks relate. Although not always immediate the relationship

between an artwork and its community can invariably offer an opportunity for people to work through barriers that often divide one another.

Hudson McKillop-Davies – Junior Handler

– David Margan If you wander our show rings you would note our ageing demographic. Its vital for our future that we encourage the young to discover the pleasures and challenges of our fraternity, they are our future. One of those is Junior Handler, seven-year-old Hudson McKillop-Davies, “I love learning about different breeds and getting to know the dogs. They make me happy, they make me laugh and I love spending time with them.” Hudson and his family joined Dogs Queensland three years ago. They joined to find a hobby that the whole family could share and enjoy. They had already done their research and decided on the breed that would drive the family plan, Saint Bernards. It was a good choice as they are known to be loving, gentle, tolerant in spite of their size and, importantly, eager to please, easy to train. It must have worked because they now have five!

18

DOG WORLD June 2022

For Mum, Lauren McKillop-Davies, dogs have never been just pets and as a locum teacher’s aide she began to use them as therapy animals and the whole family started coming to Dogs Queensland shows to see what went on and they were all sold. As Hudson recently approached his seventh birthday his Mum, Lauren, asked him how he’d like to celebrate it, well as any seven-year-old would his list was long, he wanted a suit, shoes, dog books, a grooming box, leads and Pokémon stuff but his biggest wish was, “I want to have a dog show party and go in the breed ring”. Seeing his birthday fell on Anzac Day he got his wish, “He got to show plenty of dogs in the rings for his birthday and even though he didn’t take a ribbon home he said it was the best birthday ever.” Said Lauren. Hudson is an interesting boy as it seems he has no interest in the ribbons or the ‘everyone wins a prize’ tiny tots, he doesn’t want praise he just

wanted feedback, he just wanted to learn. But he’s still just seven and when asked what he most liked to do at our shows, apart from working the ring, this is what he said; “I like to see different dogs and play with them, and I like going to the vending machine and getting in photos.” Getting in photos? Well, apparently, it’s a ‘thing’ these days. Hudson and his siblings, Byron 12, Indigo 10 and Jhack 8, have a competition to see how many other people’s photos they can get in! Perhaps that’s why Hudson’s been encouraging his school mates to get involved in our dog world, more people, more dogs, more cameras, more photos. Lauren McKillop-Davies says that the encouragement that other exhibitors have given to her family has been just terrific, “They just love the enthusiasm of the Junior Handlers, their desire to do well, to learn and their interest in other dog breeds. They’ll come up and ask Hudson and Indigo if they would like to exhibit their dogs and my kids just love doing that.” But what about those judges with their stern eagle eyes? “The faces of the judges just light up when they see one of the kids walking into the ring, the kids pride and joy is infectious and you see that little smirk arise on the judges face as they lean down and give some words of wisdom, the kids just love it.” Hudson, Byron, Indigo and Jhack may compete in hijacking photos but in the ring they’re very supportive of each other. Hudson has his eye on some more breeds, his particular favourites are Huskies, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers and Basset Fauve de Bretagnes and what does he want to do when he grows up? Show dogs, of course. “Dogs Queensland has been such a wonderful club to be a part of as a young family, it really has been a blessing for us to be members.” Said Lauren McKillop-Davies.

dyspnoea

breathing difficulties Joanne Bibby – Fursafe®

This is called Dyspnoea – essentially it is the inability to get sufficient air into your lungs. Every cell in your body needs oxygen in order to live. The brain depends on oxygen to perform even the most basic functions. Without it, the brain quickly ceases to function. Therefore, no air, no life. Now; imagine the exact same circumstance for your dog. You see your dog having difficulty breathing, gasping for air and close to stopping altogether. Were their signs? Perhaps infectious diseases such as kennel cough, pneumonia, canine influenza, upper respiratory infections or symptoms of tick paralysis? As a ‘Pawrent’ it is important to be vigilant where your dog’s breathing is concerned. If you know how your dog looks and behaves when they are fit and healthy, you will be able to recognise when their health is deteriorating or failing.

CAUSES There are a multitude of conditions which can cause laboured breathing – from medical to environmental. It may be chronic and already diagnosed or it may appear to have come out of nowhere! As dog owners we have a responsibility to monitor our dog’s health. Fursafe® advocates a weekly health surveillance protocol – undertaking regular health assessment examinations in the home will reduce the risk of an environmental consequence taking hold e.g. tick paralysis, bites and stings, chemical absorption or inhalation.

Have you ever struggled to breath? If you have, you will know how terrifying it can be. Your eyes become wide in panic, you lean forward gasping for air, aware you may pass out at any time. The fact is it can be life threatening.

concerned with your dog’s ability to breath, it is imperative you seek the advice of your Veterinarian without delay. Medical conditions rising out of chronic or acute disfunction can include:

Queensland Herding Association Ten enthusiastic members of the Queensland Herding Association and their dogs met up for a fun morning of Duck Herding training on Monday 18 April 2022. QHA members Natalie Kirkwood and Lisa Kaddatz kindly provided a selection of Call Ducks and Indian Runner Ducks for training. The beginner dogs and/or handlers worked in a small area in one section of the fenced off-lead area, while the more experienced people and dogs practiced their skills in a larger yard, moving the ducks through

obstacles and into pens. Many onlookers dropped by to check out the action and were surprised to learn that Herding is not only restricted to the popular working breeds such as Border Collies and Kelpies, as evidenced by the participation of other breeds such as a White Swiss Shepherd Dog. If you are interested in learning more about Herding, please visit the Queensland Herding Association QHA Facebook page or email the QHA President, Sally Purbrick-Illek cityworkingdogs@gmail.com

DIRECTOR PROFILES Marg Norton – David Margan Marg Norton growing up really had no choice as she was born into an extended dog family. Her grandmother bred and showed Pugs and Pomerians. Marg was just 6 when her grandmother gave her a Collie Rough bred in Mt Morgan by her Mum’s cousin. Deal done, passion in place. As she grew up all she wanted to do bred and show dogs. At 15 she got a Cocker Spaniel and so began a life long love affair with Gundogs. Two more were to follow when husband Tony bought her two more Cocker Spaniels and their first litter came in 1976. Marg and Tony have been members of Dogs Queensland for 48 years and in the early years as members of the Rockhampton Kennel Club and the Rockhampton Obedience Club. New grounds saw both lending a hand, Tony with the lighting and electrics, Marg with painting and all the other myriad things needed to get their Duthie Park grounds.

well in a raft of dog world clubs and positions. Member of All Breeds Clubs (Rockhampton KC, Gladstone KC, Bundaberg CC, Isis & District CC, Hervey Bay CC), Obedience Clubs (Rockhampton Obedience Club, Bundaberg Obedience Club) and the original Setter Club of Queensland. Even though the Setter Club of Queensland was then based in Brisbane, the club magazine was produced for a few years at their home in Bundaberg.

In 1990 they purchased their first Irish Setter from the Pearen sisters Annette and Carolyn of Highperelle Kennels.

Marg was Treasurer of the Bundaberg Canine Club for approximately 10 years and is currently the club’s secretary. Following the implementation of a successful business management plan the Bundaberg Canine Club has become a highly successful regional club, hosting a 6 show Easter cluster with a full panel of 7 International judges.

Marg Norton trained and worked all her life in administration and that experience has served her

Marg Norton joined the Board of Dogs Queensland in March 2019.

They moved, now accompanied by an Airedale, to Bundaberg in 1988.

Breeder Alert –

Dogs Queensland has become increasingly aware of Puppy Scam Websites using legitimate Dogs Queensland Registration and Queensland Breeder Identification (BIN) Numbers to sell puppies. Dogs Queensland Registration Numbers are obtained from legitimate websites such as Dogs Queensland or DogzOnline, where they are displayed as required by the Queensland Government.

Pixabay

Puppy Scam Websites

Please see the Queensland Dog Breeder Fact Sheets for regulations and guidelines for Queensland Dog Breeders.

An example of a typical scam is: • A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet. • The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix. • A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry. • Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published. • No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website. • The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures. • The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.

As a breeder what can you do to avoid being an unknowing victim of a Puppy Scam: •

Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix.

• Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate. • Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct in person contact with you. •

Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details.

Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.

As a buyer what can you do to avoid being a victim of a Puppy Scam: •

Verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland.

Ensure communications are made to verified contact details.

Meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.

If paying online, use a credit card or PayPal where you have a degree of buyer protection.

Check website is an established site with a website security certificate.

Avoid websites without physical address or phone numbers.

Ask for proof, including ANKC registration papers and veterinary health records for any puppy.

Importantly you should report any suspect sites or advertising to the ACCC ScamWatch website. Please let us know about any suspect websites too by contacting Dogs Queensland on 3252 2661 or by email at info@dogsqueensland.org.au.

DOG TALES: Where’s Walter? – Debbie Rodgers

THE IMPORTANCE OF SECURING YOUR ANIMALS WHEN ATTENDING AGRICULTURAL DOG SHOWS I would like to share the story of my Easter dog show at Mount Perry, Queensland. Hopefully by sharing this will make people more aware of how important it is to have your puppies and dogs secured long before the fireworks start. I was attending the dog show with my two 9 month old Dachshunds, Walter and Dianna and was told they were having fireworks at 8pm as it was a community show day. About 10 minutes before 8pm the fireworks were let off, earlier than we were told and Walter freaked out so bad I just couldn’t hold him. He took off into the bush as fast as his little legs would carry him. As I was running after him someone from one of the camps passed me a torch and I headed into the bush with the help of a few other competitors. We called and searched for hours in the lantana, over the rocks and through the dense bush with no result. I was totally distraught and thought that’s it – I will never see Walter again! For the next couple of days I walked and called for Walter hoping he would hear me but with no success of finding him I decided that I was not going to leave Mount Perry until I found him. With the announcement of a dingo mum and babies being in the area and heading towards the grounds on Friday, I feared the worse. The community in Mount Perry were fabulous and before long they had everyone in town searching for him. Then there was news on Monday of a couple of locals sighting him on the way to town and in town near the service station. All of a sudden I had a glimmer of hope of his return.

After being lost in the bush myself for sometime I then decided to concentrate my search on the town itself. After having an accident and hurting my leg I could no longer walk and Diana was calling for Walter. I decided to park my van and rest my leg near the service station where he was last seen. I put Diana outside of the van in a PP40 and let her cry. Within 15-20 minutes I heard a lady calling Walter and thought it’s so nice of the town helping out to find him. Then all of a sudden Walter appeared out of nowhere and was trying to get in my van – he was so happy and crying as was I. It was the best feeling to know I had Walter back in my arms. Please make sure if you are at an Agricultural Show that your animals are secured hours before the fireworks as we never know when they are going to let them off. I don’t wish this experience on anyone – it was just so distressing. PS. Walter had rump steak for lunch on Tuesday and it was probably the first meal he had since taking off on Saturday night.

DOG WORLD June 2022

Multi BIS & BNIS & Best Class in Show Awards Touchofchow Team – owned by Janette Ursida-Mouroufas

‘OUR CHOWS HAVE EVERYTHING THEY NEED AND THEY LOVE THE TASTE’ Touchofchow in South Australia has been exhibiting Chow Chows for over 20 years and breeding for 10 years. We breed to introduce worldwide stunning lines to better the breed here in Australia and we are achieving amazing success in and out of the show ring with both our smooth and rough coats. Our puppies are given the best start to life being exclusively fed Medium Puppy and our adults are conditioned on Premium Performance Sport. We used to add supplements and vitamins to our dog food until we found Eukanuba™ which already contains biotin to help maintain glorious healthy coats for the show ring, folic acid for our reproductive mothers and glucosamine to provide cartilage nutrition and joint repair. With the addition of Eukanuba’s 3D DentaDefense, our Chows have everything they need and they love the taste.

20% OFF EUKANUBA™ PERFORMANCE DIETS*

Enjoy this and other exclusive promotions when you join the Eukanuba™ Professional Club. To sign up visit our website: eukanuba.com/au
