President’s Message
E“very week across the state, our affiliated clubs conduct numerous events. These range from conformation shows to various dog sport events, fun days and promotional activities. Our clubs are run by volunteers who undertake to fulfil a range of duties and activities for the benefit of their breed and the dog world in general.
Being a volunteer for any club or organisation can bring great enjoyment and reward but also means taking on significant responsibility.
I, along with my fellow Directors and Dogs Queensland Office staff, receive numerous queries from members in relation to the management of our affiliated clubs. Members should remember, all Dogs Queensland club meetings and events are covered as part of our Code of Conduct and behaviour at these events should be acceptable within the scope of that Code.
The first place we always refer back to when addressing a query, is the Club’s constitution. This is the governing document and forms the basis for all decisions relating to the conducting of meetings and procedures within the club. Generally, clubs should follow the basic agenda process and the general rules of debate when conducting meetings.
As with most clubs and organisations, members may have differing views on certain topics. Sensible debate is always expected and one would hope, when all views are tabled, decisions are voted upon and implemented.
Being a member of a club, especially an executive member of the committee, comes with certain responsibilities. A Club Administration booklet is available here:
https://dogsqueensland.org.au/media/51999/dq_ club_administration_booklet.pdf
This is an excellent guide to the roles and responsibilities associated with each position and club administration in general.
Certain duties and responsibilities are also imposed on club officials of Incorporated Associations by law.
The Management Committee have a duty to:
• carry out their functions in the best interests of the association, with due care and diligence.
• prevent the association from incurring a debt if there are reasonable grounds to expect that the association is insolvent or will become insolvent if the debt is incurred.
A committee member or officer of an incorporated association must not use their position – or information obtained from their position – to:
• gain a benefit or material advantage for themselves or another person.
• cause detriment to the association.
Club officials should always act in the best interests of the club. There should never be a situation where the club or club funds are used for personal gain of individual members. Everyone must act with integrity and honesty at all times. Members may be subject to disciplinary action as a result of conduct which leads to a breach of the Code of Conduct and/or Code of Ethics.
Annual reports to be completed by all affiliated clubs and submitted to Dogs Queensland. This is a condition of affiliation. The Club Annual Report forms can be found here: https://dogsqueensland.org.au/ media/52275/club-annual-report-forms.pdf
Many clubs are now due or overdue to provide their next annual report. Please check that your club is up to date. Your club may be contacted in the near future if your club has not provided a current report. These reports are important to allow Dogs Queensland to have oversight of the Club’s position and to maintain a record of the Executive of the Club should contact be required.
So please be appreciative of those who do take the time to be part of affiliated clubs and take on these responsibilities. This can take an enormous amount of time and expertise as well as fund raising efforts to pull these events together. Please thank those volunteers when you next have the opportunity to do so. Without these volunteers, clubs cannot continue to operate and conduct the events we all enjoy.

SAMOYED
The Samoyed is a beautiful and affectionate and captivating breed with a rich history and a bright personality. From their origins in the Siberian tundras to their modern-day roles as beloved family pets, Samoyeds have proven themselves as loyal companions, hard workers, and gentle protectors.
Helen Chen
THE MAJESTIC SAMOYED: A HISTORY OF WORK, PLAY, AND LOYALTY
The Samoyed is a breed that captivates dog lovers worldwide with its iconic "Sammy smile", fluffy white coat, and friendly disposition. But there's much more to this breed than meets the eye. With a long history of working alongside humans in the harsh climates of Siberia, the Samoyed has become known not only for its beauty but also for its loyalty, intelligence, and resilience. This article explores the history, temperament, care requirements, and grooming needs of the Samoyed, offering insight into whether this breed is the right fit for you.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SAMOYED
The Samoyed was developed centuries ago by the peaceful Nomadic Samoyed People of Siberia. The Samoyed dog was used for herding, guarding, reindeer and for sled hauling. Although the Samoyed was a strong, tough outdoor worker they were also very much a family dog, taking their place in the family's tents, enjoying, and thriving on its human’s companionship. The dogs developed a great understanding of humankind and quickly became the guardians of the children. To this day the Samoyed remains a delightful playmate and faithful protector of children. In the 19th century and into the early 20th century the Samoyeds were brought out of Serbia to pull sleds on the arctic and Antarctic expeditions.
As Arctic exploration gained momentum for the breed outside of Siberia in the 19th and early 20th centuries, Samoyeds were brought on polar expeditions by explorers like Fridtjof Nansen, Ernest Shackleton, and Ronald Amundsen. The explorers praised the Samoyed dogs for their hard-working yet friendly temperament. All the pioneers of polar exploration used Samoyeds to some degree.
It is true, the Samoyed couldn’t compete with the Siberian
Husky when it came to speed and didn’t possess the power of the Alaskan Malamute, but the breed nonetheless had its place as a sled dog – including a superior ability to navigate over the difficult terrain that often slowed down other breeds and work tirelessly for long hours. In 1911, a Samoyed from Amundsen’s expedition is believed to have been the first non-native creature to set paw on the South Pole.
The breed first appeared in England in the late 1800s, thanks to explorer Earnest Kilburn-Scott, who brought a Samoyed puppy back as a gift for his wife. Kilburn-Scott played a pivotal role in popularizing the breed, and by 1909, he had founded the first Samoyed club in England. The breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1906, and since then, the Samoyed has gained a dedicated following worldwide.
GENERAL APPEARANCE AND BREED HALLMARKS
With its fluffy white with silver shimmer coat, striking smile, and curled tail, the Samoyed is a breed that immediately grabs attention. But beneath this stunning exterior is a well-built, muscular dog designed for hard work. The Samoyed's double coat is thick and weatherresistant, perfect for the harsh conditions of Siberia. The dense undercoat provides insulation, while the harsher outer coat repels dirt and moisture, and is often referred to as “Teflon dogs”.
This combination not only makes the Samoyed well-suited to cold weather but also surprisingly easy to keep clean, as dirt often falls off or can be easily brushed away.
Samoyeds are medium-sized dogs, with males standing 51-56 cm (20-22 inches) at the shoulder and females measuring 46-51 cm (18-20 inches). Their bodies are strong yet graceful, designed for endurance and agility. The characteristic "Samoyed Smile" is not just an adorable feature – it was a functional aspect that allowed the dogs to live in freezing temperatures without the risk of their mouths becoming frozen shut by their saliva, drool coming out of their mouths. The smile also reflects the breed's friendly and outgoing personality. Their tails, which curl over their backs, were historically used to keep their noses warm by covering and filtering icy air temperatures when they curled up to sleep in the snow.
Temperament: Friendly, Loyal, and Independent
Samoyeds are known for their friendly and personable nature. They are intelligent dogs with an independent streak – a trait inherited from their ancient ancestors, the wolves. Samoyeds are one of the 14 most ancient dog breeds still in existence, and their genetic link to wolves gives them a unique combination of intelligence and independence.
Bred to live in close quarters with their families, Samoyeds are highly social dogs that thrive on human companionship. They love being part of the family and will often follow their owners from room to room, making them known as "velcro dogs." This strong bond with their humans makes them excellent family pets, especially in homes with children. They are protective of their family members, particularly children, and are gentle playmates who enjoy interacting with kids.
Although Samoyeds are excellent watchdogs – they will bark to alert you of strangers – they are not aggressive guard dogs. Once they've sounded the alarm, they are more likely to greet a visitor with a wagging tail and a friendly smile. Their amiable personality means they are not suited for guarding duties, but they are vigilant and will let you know if something is amiss.
Given their history as working dogs, Samoyeds have a lot of energy and require regular physical and mental stimulation. Daily walks, playtime, and challenging activities are essential to keep them happy and healthy. Without sufficient exercise, they can become bored and develop destructive habits or nuisance barking.
Despite their playful nature, Samoyeds have an instinctive prey drive that can lead to chasing smaller animals. They can live peacefully with
other pets, such as cats and birds. But it is best to raise them together, and it is vital to set boundaries and provide clear training around other animal family members from the start. Samoyeds will thrive with clear rules and boundaries.
GROOMING: A BEAUTIFUL COAT THAT REQUIRES COMMITMENT
The Samoyed’s stunning double coat is one of its most defining features, but it comes with a responsibility of upkeep and maintainenance. Regular grooming is essential to keep their coat healthy and free of mats and tangles, particularly during shedding season, which occurs once or twice a year.
During shedding season, owners should brush their Samoyed at least twice a week using a comb, rake, and pin brush to remove loose fur and prevent tangles. Outside of shedding season, daily brushing is recommended to keep their coat in top condition. This may sound like a lot, but consistent grooming makes the job easier in the long run, as it prevents mats from forming. Talking with a breeder about grooming is highly recommended so that any grooming training can start from day one of a puppy joining a family. Establishing a regular and enjoyable grooming routine with a Samoyed is vital for success for both the Samoyed and their owners. Additionally, finding a professional groomer
that is experienced with double coated breeds can provide a deeper grooming to ensure your Samoyed maintains their impressive coat.
Importantly, a Samoyed’s coat should never be clipped or shaved unless medically necessary. Their double coat serves as insulation against both cold and heat, helping regulate their body temperature. In warmer weather, the Samoyed’s coat reflects sunlight, and they are surprisingly good at coping with heat as long as they have access to fresh water, shade, and are kept wellgroomed. Clipping their coat removes this protective layer and can expose them to sunburn or heatstroke.
In addition to brushing, regular checks and care of their ears, teeth, and nails are important. Keeping their nails trimmed and their teeth clean ensures that your Samoyed remains comfortable and healthy. Grooming should be a time to bond with your dog, and handling them regularly helps make tasks like nail clipping or giving medications easier over time.
Many owners are surprised to find that despite the Samoyed’s white coat, they tend to stay relatively clean. Thanks to the nature of their coat, dirt often falls away as it dries. A quick brush or the use of a force dryer can help maintain their appearance after a muddy or damp walk.
HEALTH AND CARE
Samoyeds are generally a healthy breed, but like all dogs, they can be prone to certain health issues. Prospective owners should ensure they are buying puppies from reputable breeders who conduct health screenings, particularly for hip and elbow dysplasia and eye conditions such as progressive retinal atrophy. It is appropriate to request the results of potential puppy’s results from a breeder for peace of mind.
A well-balanced diet is also crucial for maintaining the health of a Samoyed. Owners should consult their breeder on what food the puppy has been fed and consider continuing with that diet initially. Transitioning from puppy food to adult food at around one year of age is recommended. Some Samoyeds are prone to food allergies, so it’s important to monitor their diet and avoid ingredients that may trigger a reaction. A diet based on high-quality proteins such as lamb, rice, or poultry is often a good choice, and the absence of chemical preservatives is preferred.
Another thing to be mindful of is a Samoyed’s tendency to ingest foreign objects. Some Samoyeds have a habit of eating things they should not, such as socks or small fabric items, which can lead to intestinal blockages and costly vet visits. It’s important to keep an eye on them and provide plenty of safe, appropriate chew toys
to satisfy their chewing instincts. Providing your Samoyed with a safe area when left unattended is ideal – either a specific dog run, area of the home without small items of risk and investing in crate training your Samoyed can reduce the risk and worry for owners.
Lastly, ensuring your Samoyed has access to fresh water always is essential, especially in warmer months or climates. While they are adapted to handle various climates, hydration is key to keeping them healthy and happy.
CONCLUSION
The Samoyed is a beautiful and affectionate and captivating breed with a rich history and a bright personality. From their origins in the Siberian tundras to their modern-day roles as beloved family pets, Samoyeds have proven themselves as loyal companions, hard workers, and gentle protectors. However, owning a Samoyed requires dedication, particularly in terms of grooming, training and exercise.
If you’re willing to invest the time and effort into caring for this magnificent breed, a Samoyed will reward you with years of companionship, joy, happiness and love. Their iconic smile, fluffy coat, and friendly demeanour make them a breed like no other, and for the right owner, they are a truly wonderful addition to the family.

"Spring
is Sprung"
"Spring is Sprung, the grass is riz..." along with the snakes, lizards, spiders and bugs
– Elisa McCutcheon, Chair Canine Health Committee
Spring is a season which is typically associated with growth, new life and visions of fields of flowers. I always approach Spring with mixed feelings which more closely resemble trepidation and dread. Spring is when some of the Australian wildlife becomes more active. So, for those of us with dogs, particularly those on property rather than inner suburbia, Spring and then Summer involve additional risk of encounters with some of the native wildlife.
These are some of the things we have to look forward to:
Snakes!
Clearly, snakes are best avoided at all times, particularly those that are highly venomous. And Australia has some of the most venomous snakes in the world. While snakes are typically shy, they will bite when attacked, cornered or threatened.
Some symptoms of snake bite include:
• Weakness/collapse
• Vomiting
• Laboured breathing
• Shaking
• Twitching
• Loss of bladder and bowel control
In the case of a venomous snake bite, restrict movement (do not allow the dog to walk). Urgent veterinary treatment is required. Do not delay. The longer the delay, the less likely the prospects of survival. If possible, call ahead to let them know that you are on your way with a snake bite victim.
Avoid long grass in bushland and other areas where snakes are likely to reside such as woodpiles. If you are in such areas, keep your dog on a lead.
Precautionary measures such as snake mesh may be required to protect kennels and dog yards.
With snakes becoming more active, it's good to know that the majority of the time snakes get inside homes is through open doors or open unscreened windows. Simply keeping these closed will go a long way in preventing them from getting inside.
Lizards
Lizards encounters are also problematic. Dogs love hunting lizards and skinks. However, this is best avoided. Apart from the risk of a bite, lizards may carry bacteria including salmonella, giardia and cryptosporidium. Lizard encounters are to be discouraged and ”lizard counselling” (pictured below) may be required to deter future encounters.
Unfortunately, some dogs are determined lizard hunters, particularly those with high prey drive.
Spiders
Spiders are a problem all year round. However, we might as well include arachnids for good measure.
Dogs will often try to catch or play with spiders. Any crawling target seems fun to play with, particularly for puppies. Spiders will also bite when threatened or attacked. Given that dogs are inquisitive, bites will usually be on the paw, nose
or mouth. Spider bites are tricky. As a spider is not likely to hang around and will crawl away and hide, this may be difficult to diagnose and/or identify what type of spider.
Symptoms may include:
• Soreness
• Swelling
• Respiratory difficulty
If a spider bite is suspected, watch carefully for swelling and any difficulty breathing. In this case, urgent veterinary attention will be required.
Bees & Wasps
Bees and wasps can give nasty stings which are likely to end in a trip to the vet, particularly as these are likely to be on the face or mouth.
Cane toads
Cane toads are also dangerous and appealing to dogs. Cane toad toxin is highly poisonous.
They can cause toxic illness or death if venom is ingested or if their venom enters the eye.
Symptoms include:
• Accelerated heartbeat
• Shortness of breath
• Excess salivation
The toxin can be quite addictive. Cane toads also transmit diseases including salmonella.
Garden Snails & Slugs
These may pose a life threatening risk to both dogs and humans. They carry rat lung worm. Rat lung worm is endemic in tropical and warm areas of Australia, particularly in urban areas. This parasite can cause significant damage if ingested. Lungworm larvae can be released into the slime produced by these creatures. A dog may be infected simply by ingesting the slime. So, it is not necessary to ingest the entire snail or slug to be at risk. The larvae migrate from the gastrointestinal tract to the spinal cord.
Early detection is key. Symptoms include:
• Respiratory problems including a cough (although a cough may not always occur)
• Depression, lethargy, seizures
• Loss of weight/appetite, vomiting or diarrhoea
• Poor blood clotting eg. Bleeding, eg nose bleeds, bleeding into the eyes
• Pale eyes and gums – possible anaemia
As all of these symptoms can be caused by other diseases, it is important to seek veterinary attention if a dog has any of these symptoms, as this parasite may be fatal if untreated. Treatment is available and, in most cases, the dog will make a full recovery provided that treatment occurs early enough.
Preventing snails and slugs in the garden can be difficult as snail bait is also poisonous to dogs, if ingested. Keep vegetable gardens sectioned off and clean dog bows on a regular basis.
Wildlife avoidance training
Wildlife avoidance is not instinctive. This has to be learned. Good recall is essential. Recall is a key skill and it is best to start training your dog as early as possible as this may be life saving. There are some wildlife avoidance training sessions and these can be useful to learn the basics.
More advanced training is also available from certain trainers. In some cases, real snakes are used to “correct” the behaviour. Not something I would be game to try. A word of warning that some trainers utilise methods such as use e-collars which are not legal in Queensland.
RULE 21 –OBLIGATION TO REGISTER
21.1 A member who breeds a litter of dogs, the parents of which are registered or eligible for registration with the CCCQ Ltd or other recognised canine controlling body must:

A standard fee will be set for registrations received by the office on a date within four (4) months of the date of whelping and a higher fee for registrations received by the office on a date between four (4) and six (6) months or between six (6) and twelve (12) months of the date of whelping;
(4) Where the breeder wishes to register a puppy with the breeder’s name as part owner, an Agreement signed by the purchaser of the puppy is to be attached to the application to register the litter. Only official CCCQ Ltd Partnership Agreement forms are to be used;
(5) Where the breeder wishes to register a puppy on the Limited Register, an Official CCCQ Ltd Limited Register Agreement statement from the purchaser stating that the implications of the Limited Register are understood is to be attached to the application; and
(6) A breeder may, at time of registration on the General Register, endorse registration ”Not to be exported”.

sELF- AUDIT BREEDER CHECKLIST A SUCCESS!
Last month, Dogs Queensland invited all current Prefix holders to participate in a self-audit Breeder Checklist. We had over 400 submissions with 95% of respondents finding the Checklist helpful. We appreciated the enthusiastic participation of members and the responses have provided a great insight into where Dogs Queensland can develop resources to further support our breeding members.
The Breeder Checklist was based on the following Policies and Legislation:
• Dogs Queensland Rules and Code of Ethics
• Queensland Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines for Breeding Dogs and their Progeny
• Animal Care and Protection Act 2001
• Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008
• Queensland Local and State Legislation
Members also took advantage of the opportunity to request a list of dogs currently recorded under their prefix. A great effort was made in this area with 433 Record Update Sheets requested which resulted in 1855 records being updated. The accuracy of the ANKC database is essential for the future of Dogs Queensland by providing correct data for budgeting, events and member support.
We encourage all Prefix holders to review dogs currently listed under their Prefix and update records to reflect the current dogs you own. A list of dogs can be requested at submissions@dogsqueensland.org.au and used to update any records of dogs you no longer own or have passed away in place of the original pedigree certificate. Only dogs born after 1 January 2019 will be required to pay the transfer fee. Over the next 6 months, Dogs Queensland will be working towards getting the ANKC database up to date and accurate for all members.
BREEDER CHECKLIST RESULTS
We had a good representation from each of the Zones (See map of Zones below).
• 71% – Zone 1
• 14% – Zone 2
• 15% – Zone 3
State Zones
Overall, as depicted in the graph below, the main areas identified by members that could benefit from further support were transfers and record keeping.
TRANSFERS
The record update process highlighted that transfers were not being completed. Some of the common reasons for transfers not being completed were:
• The dog was going to a pet home
• The new owners didn’t want the papers
• The papers were given to the new owners for them to transfer if they wanted the papers
Regardless of the circumstances of re-homing, if the dog leaves your ownership, it is the responsibility of the breeder to carry out the transfer with Dogs Queensland which includes submitting a signed pedigree certificate and paying the transfer fee within 30 days.
DECEASED DOGS
This can be a hard time for members when their dog passes. Dogs Queensland only needs a copy of the pedigree to be sent in to notify Dogs Queensland within 30 days of the passing of a dog to update the record. This way you can keep the dogs original Pedigree Certificate as a keep sake.
RECORD KEEPING & COMPUTER PROGRAMS
Members used both paper and electronic methods for storing and recording data. There is no set way in which records need to be stored, however, each breeding dog should have a file which records breeding activity and health care. The records also need to be easy to access and be able to locate specific information when needed.
The most commonly used computer software by members was Show Manager with Excel next in line.
The majority of dogs were kept in a house/backyard environment with 20% members having purpose built kennels to house their dogs and 52% of members hold a Kennel Permit/License for their dog breeding activities.
By incorporating requirements for dog breeders in one checklist members can review how their current practices compare to the standards. By ensuring our members are meeting the standard will provide a pathway for Dogs Queensland to establish a reputation for investing and committing to canine welfare, promoting high standards amongst our members and attracting new members to our community. The
Breeder Checklist also aligns with the progressive development of the Five Domains to facilitate both the physical and emotional needs of dogs and opportunities to have positive experiences.

Spotlight on the 6th Border Collie National
The 6th Border Collie National, hosted by the Border Collie Club of Queensland, was held from 29 August to 1 September 2024 and set a new breed and national record, with over 1600 entries across all events. This year’s event celebrated the exceptional skills and traits of the Border Collie and demonstrated the vibrant and dedicated community surrounding this remarkable breed. The Dogs Queensland venue at Durack, provided an ideal setting for the National, offering ample space for the diverse range of competitions. The venue’s well-maintained grounds were perfect for
highlighting the versatility of Border Collies. Herding exhibitors were warmly welcomed at Anne Mitchell’s property at Postman’s Ridge. This picturesque location provided a unique and authentic setting for the herding trials, allowing participants to experience a true pastoral environment, and was ideal for showcasing the Border Collies’ herding skills. The trials highlighted the breed’s deep-rooted connection to its working heritage, with impressive demonstrations of instinctual talent and effective livestock management.
The warm Queensland weather, though a stark contrast to the challenging rains experienced during the 4th Border Collie National, brought its own set of opportunities and challenges. The sun-drenched days were a welcome change for the Club. However, the intensity of the heat required meticulous planning and creativity to ensure the comfort and safety of all involved.
The opening ceremony of the 6th Border Collie National was a vibrant and moving event that set the tone for the entire competition. Held on Friday evening, the ceremony showcased the spirit and dedication of the Border Collie community commencing with the Judy Vos Memorial Breeders Team Challenge, named in honour of the esteemed breeder and dedicated Border Collie advocate Judy Vos from Clan-Abby. The Memorial Breeders Team Challenge was a highlight and hotly contested event of the National.
The official part of the ceremony began with a heartfelt Welcome to Country, followed by a warm reception from Carolyn Ryan, President of Dogs Queensland, and the National Show Manager. Attendees were then treated to an engaging performance by Kelly Gill and the Wonderdogs, as well as three beautiful renditions of the Australian, South African, and Polish national anthems.
One of the evening’s standout moments was undoubtedly the veterans’ parade, which brought the event to a poignant close. This part of the night moved many to tears, both among the owners and those watching.
A Celebration of Border Collie Excellence
Despite the weather challenges, the 6th Border Collie National was a resounding success, with Border Collies from across the country showcasing their remarkable abilities. The event featured a range of competitions with 71 classes across all the dog sports:
Agility Trials: The Agility courses were a highlight, featuring a series of challenging obstacles that tested the dogs’ speed, precision, and handler communication. The Agility trials were a thrilling display of the Border Collies’ athleticism, with several standout performances capturing the crowd’s admiration.
Obedience & Rally Trials: The Obedience events provided a platform for Border Collies to demonstrate their exceptional trainability. Handlers and their dogs performed a series of commands with remarkable accuracy and responsiveness, showcasing the deep bond and understanding between them.
Scent Work Trials: A competitive activity that tests a dog’s ability to identify and locate specific scents, has gained increasing popularity in canine sports. Border Collies, renowned for their keen senses and intelligence, are particularly well-suited to this challenging and rewarding discipline. The Scent Work trials at the 6th Border Collie National drew a large entry and provided a fascinating display of the breed’s natural tracking and detection skills.
Trick Dog Trials: The Trick Dog trials added a delightful and engaging element to the 6th Border Collie National, offering spectators a chance to see the breed’s playful and creative side. The trials were not only entertaining but also inspired many attendees to explore trick training with their own Border Collies, demonstrating the breed’s potential for learning and performing a wide range of tricks.
Dances With Dogs: This is a dynamic sport where dogs and their handlers perform choreographed routines set to music. This discipline emphasizes creativity, coordination, and the deep bond between the dog and the handler. It allows participants to showcase their Border Collies’ agility and responsiveness in a visually stunning and entertaining format.
Herding Competitions: Staying true to the breed’s origins, the Herding trials allowed Border Collies to display their instinctual skills in managing livestock. The herding events were a testament to the breed’s historical role in agriculture, with impressive displays of control and strategy.
The Conformation show saw unprecedented numbers in Queensland, with an impressive 323 dogs entered in conformation under Mr. Ron Juckes of Vernon Border Collies (South Africa). Additionally, 256 entries were entered in the property classes, judged by Ms. Iwona Przeworska of Alderaan Border Collies (Poland).
After two days of intense competition with numerous large classes, the winners of the following were:
Runner Best in Show: Was awarded to Supreme Champion SYRYNE REIGN OF THE DRAGON HT, owned by Ms Shiralee Fossey.
Beyond the competitions, the 6th Border Collie National also introduced a first for Australia – the Queensland Veterinary Specialist Sips & Studs. This cocktail and networking event provided attendees with the unique opportunity to meet stud dogs from across the country, while also celebrating and connecting with breeders.
After four days of competition, the pinnacle of the event was the presentation dinner held at the Souths Sports Club, Acacia Ridge. Winners were honoured and received their prizes during an evening filled with celebration and friendship.
The 6th Border Collie National event featured two prestigious awards at the dinner, recognising the remarkable versatility of this beautiful breed:
Most Versatile Across Dog Sports: R.CH. O.CH. FS GR CH. HTM.GR.CH. Taylea English Lady HSAs TDX. JD. RM. RAE. SD. SWE HNAs AD. TK.A. UDX. SPDX. SWC SWV GDX. Owned by Rachel Tiah.

Looking Forward
As the 6th Border Collie National concludes, the event has set a new standard for future competitions and breed showcases. The dedication of the participants, the skill of the dogs, and the enthusiasm of the spectators all contributed to a memorable and successful occasion.
The Queensland National has reinforced the Border Collie’s reputation as one of the most intelligent and versatile breeds, while also strengthening the bond within the global Border Collie community. As the excitement from this year’s event settles, anticipation
is already building for the next National, which will be hosted by the Border Collie Club of SA in 2027. We look forward to even greater achievements and celebrations of this exceptional breed.

SCENT WORK NEW CLASS IS ULTIMATE FUN
–
Kim Dawson
Scent Work is an extremely popular sport in Queensland, with officially sanctioned events being held from 2021 onwards. In 2024, the first rule review was completed and a new class, the “Ultimate” class was offered with the rules coming into force on 1 July 2024. The Dogs Queensland Scent Work Subcommittee offered a Double Ultimate Class Trial at Oxley State School on Tuesday 2 July 2024, and it was extremely well attended by eligible competitors from Queensland and New South Wales. Subsequent trials have been held at Burnside State High School, a venue secured by and shared with an ACSW event with our sincere thanks, and at Woodridge State High School.
WYSIWYG ITS A BREW TIFUL DAY SWE SWV SWC (Golden Retriever), handled by Stephanie Yoon.
Ultimate Class offers a more challenging, integrated search with an area between 200m2 and 500m2. This includes interior and exterior spaces and one or both containers and vehicles mixed in to form a continuous multi-element search. An unknown number of hides (between 3 and 10) are hidden within the area and dogs are set a time limit of between 7 and 15 minutes to discover them all. To increase the challenge level, between 4 and 6 hidden and visible intentional distractors are placed within the search area such as food, toys or a person, and dogs must work past these distractors.
This new class tests the dog’s working ability and stamina in addition to testing the communication and strategy of the dog and handler team. It offers an exciting, fast paced challenge to the Masterslevel Scent Work competitors that rewards skilled and thorough work on the part of the teams.

Breeder Alert –Puppy Scam Websites
Dogs Queensland has become increasingly aware of Puppy Scam Websites using legitimate Dogs Queensland Registration and Queensland Breeder Identification (BIN) Numbers to sell puppies. Dogs Queensland Registration Numbers are obtained from legitimate websites such as Dogs Queensland or DogzOnline, where they are displayed as required by the Queensland Government.
Please see the Queensland Dog Breeder Fact Sheets for regulations and guidelines for Queensland Dog Breeders.
An example of a typical scam is:
• A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet.
• The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix.
• A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry.
• Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published.
• No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website.
• The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures.
• The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.
As a breeder what can you do to avoid being an unknowing victim of a Puppy Scam:
• Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix.
• Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate.
• Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct inperson contact with you.
• Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details.
• Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.
As a buyer what can you do to avoid being a victim of a Puppy Scam:
• Verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland.
• Ensure communications are made to verified contact details.
• Meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.
• If paying online, use a credit card or PayPal where you have a degree of buyer protection.
• Check website is an established site with a website security certificate.
• Avoid websites without physical address or phone numbers.
• A sk for proof, including ANKC registration papers and veterinary health records for any puppy.
Importantly you should report any suspect sites or advertising to the ACCC ScamWatch website. Please let us know about any suspect websites too by contacting Dogs Queensland on 3252 2661 or by email at info@dogsqueensland.org.au.

Rates Guide 2024
THE ULTIMATE DOG GROOMING BRUSHES IN THE WORLD.
REGULAR PIN BRUSH
WOODEN PIN BRUSH
A brilliant grooming brush for all coat types & a favourite for puppies. 100% anti-static natural wooden pins smooth the coat and prevent flyaways. They delicately loosen knots and reduce pulling on the coat to prevent breakage while massaging the skin to revitalise natural lustre.
Ideal for grooming all coat types. Perfect for most coats that require a pin brush for drying, refreshing a coat or maintenance brushing. Ideal for blow-drying and particularly necessary on coated breeds.
EXTRA LONG PIN BRUSH
LONG PIN BRUSH
Popular grooming brush for many full coated or longer coated breeds that require a slightly longer pin length to enable efficiency and ease of brushing and drying. An ideal brush for blow-drying many breeds.
A brush specifically designed for dogs with that extra-long coat length and ideal for very long flowing coated breeds. The 35mm rounded polished pins enable ease of brushing and drying of extra-long coat types.
THICK PIN BRUSH
A pin brush with thicker pins for those thick, dense, and hard to get through coats Many breeds have coats that don’t allow a “normal” pin brush to efficiently brush and dry. This thick pin allows the pins to penetrate these coats to ensure the coat roots to coat tips are correctly and thoroughly brushed.
ANTI-STATIC PORCUPINE BRUSH
A finishing/styling brush for softer to a lighter density double coats Porcupine pins will remove tangles and loose coat. Dialon pins easily get through the coat while the 100% black boar bristles have a gentle yet smoothing effect of the coat. The perfect finishing brush to use on ¾ dry coats, maximising contact with the coat to finish to the dry style and result you require. This brush has the ability to flatten, straighten and reduce wave to coats when drying.
SOFT SLICKER BRUSH
100% PURE BRISTLE BRUSH
This is your soft, delicate and silky coat type brush, yet also perfect using on shorter coated breeds for a smoothing and polishing. Suitable for all breeds and essential for smooth or short coated breeds. The best brush for gentle finishing.
Our Ultimate Soft Slicker is brilliant in abolishing loose hair, de-matting and individualising all coats of various types and lengths It can easily get through the densest of coats with a resulting finish and hair separation to the coat is like no other slicker.
The softness of this slicker allows the perfect finish when drying or brushing on multiple coat types. The very best slicker on the market. Used & trusted by top winning show dog’s owners and handlers worldwide.
POWDER APPLICATION BRUSH
Designed for applying powders to Show Dogs and shaped to enable groomers to place powder in hard to reach areas. Features horse-hair bristles.
