The President’s Message The Queensland Dog World
President’s Message for March 2016 The culture of ‘us and them’ This is not a message that I particularly want to write but I feel it is both worthwhile and necessary. The Dog World is made up of many components: Members, Breeders, Exhibitors, Trialers, Affiliated Clubs, Board Members, Ground Managers and Office Staff. We have Members in 3 different Zones potentially 2,000 km apart, we have Members who have been around for 50 years and Members that have been around for 1 month. Members who have shown at literally thousands of Shows and Members preparing for their first Show. Members who Show at Shows with1,000 plus dogs and Members who trial in Trials in Zone 3 with possibly half a dozen dogs. Members who are 80 years old and Junior Members who are 7 years old. The point I am trying to get across is that we are an incredibly diverse organisation with vastly different wants, needs, opinions and expectations BUT, and this is a huge BUT, we all contribute and we all help to make up this incredible organisation that is Dogs Queensland. I will relay a couple of incidents to you. Recently, a number of Board Members attended the second of our Members’ Forums at Durack. The Board has been often criticised for not Meeting with Members, not providing a platform for feedback and not listening to Members. The quarterly Forum was introduced to provide an informal setting for Members to ‘meet the Board’. At this latest Forum, the Board were formally questioned by a number of Members in such a way that at the following Board Meeting, the Board Members queried as to why they should be exposed to such questioning at an informal gathering. The Board are all volunteers, every one of them gives an inordinate amount of time to the role and they should be given respect. Conversely, the Board of Directors are expected to give the Members that same respect. Our Grounds Manager at the Dogs Queensland Sports Ground, Bob Dorr, comes in for abuse on a regular basis, all he is ever trying to do is his job, this is lack of respect and is clearly unacceptable. What these examples show is a culture of ‘us and them’ that cannot be allowed to continue. There is no ‘us and them’, we are ALL Dogs Queensland and all facets should respect one another, be it between our Office and Members, Members and Grounds Manager, Committees and Directors or Members and Directors. Our hobby is again under increasing scrutiny from the wider community, we cannot afford to be divergent and self-centred. We need to be a strong, inclusive of all, welcoming and embracing, and this has to start NOW. Of course, we will have differences of opinion but please exercise caution in how you express your differing opinion and be respectful at all times. I may be a little clichéd but remember at all times, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. Shane Thomas President

Guidance Notes (Judging Of Neuter Classes) These notes are to be read in conjunction with Rule 161 and pertain to the judging of Neuter Classes at all levels. Procedure Where Neuter classes are offered, they are to be judged at the end of Breed/Group/Show judging at the completion of normal classes. Where more than one (1) class is offered, Neuter Certificate (challenge) and Neuter of Breed runoffs are to be conducted to determine Neuter Certificate Dog and Bitch plus Reserve Neuters, then Best and Runner up Neuters of Breed. Class runoffs may also be required where a dog and bitch have been entered in the same class and those classes were not eliminated by Best or Runner Up. Neuter in Group and in Show are to be conducted at the completion of normal classes commencing with Best/Runner Up Neuter in Group/Show and then the classes (if offered) where not eliminated. Where only class 18/18A is offered there will be no class runoffs. Points Points are to be awarded in the following manner – one (1) point for each dog exhibited plus five (5) points for the Certificate. The Neuter of Breed/Group/Show are also awarded one (1) additional point for each Neuter beaten in the Breed/Group/Show to a maximum of twenty-five (25) points per Show.

Dogs Queensland Board Notes The Queensland Dog World
Qualifying scores of 70 points or more gained prior to the 1st January 2016 for the Rally Novice, Rally Advanced and Rally Excellent titles will be accepted.
Continued from page 5 Awards Awards are to be presented for Best/Runner Up Neuter in Group/ Show and all classes of Neuter (15/16/17/18). Where only Class 18/18A is offered, only Best and Runner Up Neuter in Group/Show awards are to be presented with no class award. The rationale for Best and Runner Up is that, should the best be disqualified after judging, then the award and points can be awarded to the Runner Up as with normal judging.

Please note that a numerical RAE Title may be completed in 2016 in accordance with the following: NOTE: As from the 1st January 2016 the numeric designation to indicate the number of times the dog has met the RAE requirements will cease. However where a dog has already attained one or more qualifying scores of 80 points or more in both the Rally Advanced B and Rally Excellent B Classes at the same trial towards a numeric designation for a RAE title (eg RAE2) under the former Rules, these qualifications will be accepted towards the required total of five (5) double qualifying scores, provided that at least one double qualifying score of 80 points or more must be attained after these Rules become effective.
6 - March 2016
All dogs eligible to be entered in Rally Obedience Trials in accordance with these Rules shall be eligible to receive Class Title Certificates upon qualification and application. The Member Body will receive applications for the use of the letters: R.N. – signifying Rally Novice - Three (3) qualifying scores of 75 points or more must be earned under at least two different Judges in Novice class to earn a title. R.A. – signifying Rally Advanced - Three (3) qualifying scores of 80 points or more must be earned under at least two different judges in Advanced Class to earn a title. R.E. – signifying Rally Excellent - Five (5) qualifying scores of 80 points or more must be earned under at least two different Judges in Excellent class to earn a title. R.A.E. – signifying Rally Advanced Excellent - To qualify for the title of RAE a dog and Handler team must receive a minimum of five (5) qualifying scores, in both the Rally Advanced B and Rally Excellent B Classes at the same trial, of 80 points or more out of a possible perfect score of 100, under at least two different Judges.

However for a period of twelve (12) months from the date when these Rules become effective, where a dog has already attained one or more qualifying scores of 80 points or more in both the Rally Advanced B and Rally Excellent B Classes at the same trial towards a RAE title under the former Rules, these qualifications will be accepted towards the required total of five (5) double qualifying scores, provided that at least one double qualifying score of 80 points or more must be attained after these Rules become effective.
2.14
Where a dog starts the dog walk it must be taken to the other end of the obstacle to dismount safely.
2.15
Handlers will be penalised if they call the dog off the dog walk regardless of their apparent purpose.
2.16
All parts of a Combination obstacle must be completed, with or without fault.
R.M. – signifying Rally Master - Seven (7) qualifying scores of 85 points or more must be earned under at least three different judges in Master class to earn a title.
2.17
Any performance that is considered unsafe will result in the dog and handler being disqualified.
2.12
The refusal section of the obstacle must be completed prior to a penalty for ‘faulting’ the obstacle. A fault will occur if an error is made on an obstacle after it has been successfully started. Example, if a dog fails to weave a pole after starting correctly, the obstacle has been faulted and is not scored. Another ‘red’ must be attempted before continuing. In the case where the third ‘red’ has been attempted the dog must start the Closing Sequence. A faulted coloured obstacle in the Opening Sequence, fails to score for that attempt, however, the obstacle remains in play for additional scoring in the Opening and Closing Sequence unless the obstacle has been rendered unable to be performed
2.13
The dog should continue to perform the remaining parts of a faulted obstacle in the case of combination obstacle and long obstacles. This is primarily to ensure that a dog is not called off an obstacle at the risk of injury/safety or in an attempt to gain a time advantage. Where a dog mounts the dog walk and misses the colour up it has faulted the obstacle and cannot score. The dog must be taken to the other end of the obstacle to dismount safely. Handlers will be penalised if they call the dog off the dog walk regardless of their apparent purpose. All parts of a Combination obstacle must be completed, with or without fault.
2.14
Any performance that is considered unsafe will result in the dog and handler being disqualified.
RO. CH - signifying Rally Obedience Champion. The Member Body will receive applications for the title of Rally Obedience Champion RO.CH in connection with each dog which, having gained its Rally Master (RM) title, thereafter gains a further ten (10) qualifying scores of 90 or more points in the Rally Master Class under at least three (3) different Judges. (Amended 02/16, EM#130) REGULATIONS PART 6 - THE REGISTER AND REGISTRATION The amended regulations can be accessed at the ANKC Website RULES FOR THE CONDUCT OF AGILITY GAMES – CORRECTION The new Snooker Rules contained in the Rules for the conduct of Agility Games is incorrect to the Agility Committee Minutes whereby the following Clauses highlighted in red should have been replaced with the Clauses highlighted below in blue. 2.12

Working with Distraction
RAFT News Retrieving and Field Trials Committee The RAFT Committee assists Dogs Queensland in supporting the Field and Retrieving trialling community (Clubs and individuals) in assuring field sports for working gundogs continue to thrive and individuals have the opportunity to participate in field events sanctioned by the ANKC.
By Joe Law
How many times have we heard dog handlers complain that the dog performs perfectly in his home environment but at trials behaves as if he has never been trained? The difference is in the distraction level. Dogs often associate a learned behaviour with the place in which it was learned and when moved to a new location, the distraction levels play havoc with the dog’s performance. At trials, the dog is not only experiencing a new location but is also confronted with new odours, other dogs, other activities, noises, people, different types of terrain, cover, birds and gunfire as well as working at various distances. The question then becomes how to condition your dog to cope with the distractions? The answer is to initially train with as few distractions as possible and then gradually increase distraction levels slowly and methodically. Each time a new distraction is introduced into the training program, it is like a new beginning for the dog, and other factors influencing the dog will need to be reduced or even eliminated for a while before gradually being reintroduced. An example might be to train a dog to walk at heel while off lead and to be steady right up to the moment when it is sent to retrieve:

1. Establish the behaviour in the yard with no distraction and nothing cast. 2. Stay in the yard and gradually add distractions: (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f)
Another person standing or walking close by Another dog or animal sitting or moving around A child playing with a ball Some obstacles in the path that need negotiating Some noise: laughter, clapping, coughing, squealing, gunfire Move to a new location and repeat the distractions
3. Move to another location with heavier cover and different odours and reintroduce the distractions slowly. 4. Repeat the whole set of exercises from the beginning only now have something cast when the dog reaches the firing point but do not allow the dog to retrieve. 5. Reward the dog by allowing it to retrieve occasionally but only when steadiness has been perfect.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
Dogs Queensland Notices The Queensland Dog World
At Retrieving Trials, sighted birds combined with gunfire are very exciting for the dog and much of the training demanding steadiness and control can be easily forgotten in the heat of the moment. Too many opportunities to retrieve and not enough emphasis on obedience and steadiness, especially in a dog’s early training, can easily result in bad habits being formed. It is important that all aspects of obedience, including carrying and delivering game to hand, are combined with casting and lining drills and constantly maintained in a dog’s training program. However, that having been said, momentum and retrieving drive must also be maintained and a balanced program to suit a dog’s individual needs is important.
Retriever Ability Tests For Gundogs (RATG) Update Reminder Further to a proposal to use replica game as an alternative to pigeons or dummies for the retrieving tests in Retrieving Ability Tests for Gundogs (RATG), the National RAFT has deemed it to be an issue which can be dealt with at individual state level.

For all your RIBBONS AND SASHES call Tina to discuss your club needs.
You are advised that Dogs Queensland has approved the following addition to the ANKC Rules for the conduct of Retrieving Ability Tests for Gundogs which will apply for Queensland RATG events: Addition to Section 8 – Definition of Terms ‘Dummies’: may include replica game such as Dokken. When used, they should be consistent with the existing criteria for dummies with respect to size, colour and weight. Please note that the requirement that all dummies are to be approved by the Judge prior to judging will remain applicable.

CANINE RESEARCH FOUNDATION GRANTS AWARDED FOR 2016 The Canine Research Foundation is a Public Charitable Trust to support research conducted at Australian universities from funds generated via the levy on puppy registrations, fund raising functions, taxdeductible donations and bequests from the public. The purpose of the Foundation is to provide funding for research directed at improving canine health. Canine health refers to research into disease and disease related processes, and/or the prevention of injury and/or disease.
The CRF was founded by the VCA in 1992 and 110 research grants have been awarded for projects through to those commencing in 2016. Just over one million dollars of funding has been distributed since 1992 for research. Funding to the CRF is received from all ANKC Ltd Member Bodies. Current trustees of the Canine Research Foundation are: Mr Roger Bridgford, Ms Louise Brodie, Dr Steve Holloway, Professor Brian Corbitt, Associate Professor Jan West, and Mr James Rodger. In 2016 five grants were successful in receiving funding and summaries of the projects are outlined below.
Combination novel immunotherapeutics for the treatment of dogs with cancer (Dr Rachel Allavena, University of Queensland) Cancer is an extremely common and devastating disease in many breeds of pet dogs. The use of immune-based cancer treatments is of great potential in human and veterinary medicine. Intratumoural Complete Freund’s Adjuvant (iCFA) injection and streptavidin-based autologous anti-cancer vaccine (Kvax) are two novel Australian invented, safe and effective, experimental immune-based treatments for naturally occurring cancer in pet dogs. To date we have tested these therapies individually against a range of very common naturally occurring cancers in dogs of many breeds, such as mast cell tumours, melanoma, and soft tissue sarcomas.
14 - March 2016
We believe a combination of the local iCFA and body wide KVax treatment will result in even higher cure rates and increased tumour shrinkage than each method alone. Individually, both treatments are safe and work against dog cancers in pilot studies in rodents and pet dogs conducted at our universities. Our aim is to assess the safety and effectiveness of single and combination iCFA and Kvax in pet dogs naturally suffering from a range of cancers that have been unable to be cured by currently available treatments. We will explore the immune mechanisms causing tumour shrinkage and cancers cures, and compare these with dogs who fail to respond to the treatments. By understanding how and why the treatments work; we will be able to optimise these treatments as new weapons against the cancers which commonly plague multiple dog breeds and bring heartache to countless dog owners.
Genetic variants associated with development of canine visceral haemangiosarcoma (Caroline O’Leary, University of Queensland) Canine visceral haemangiosarcoma is a cancer affecting the internal organs, especially the spleen, liver and heart in many dog breeds, but especially German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers and Labradors. The cancer originates from cells lining the blood vessels and is not usually diagnosed prior to the cancer having spread internally in the body. Diagnosis and treatment of haemangiosarcoma has not improved for decades. However, better outcomes for dogs and their owners are likely if individual dogs at high risk of developing this cancer can be identified early using a genetic test, and then monitored for cancer development using ultrasound.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
Dogs Queensland Notices The Queensland Dog World
Further, such genetic diagnostic tests could allow breeders to breed away from genetic markers which are associated with increased risk of developing this cancer. This study aims to develop such a genetic test by determining the DMA sequence from dogs with the cancer and comparing it to the DNA sequence from normal dogs to identify genetic changes which are associated with increased or decreased risk of developing the cancer haemangiosarcoma. Previous studies identifying genetic areas of interest in this cancer have been identified in by this group (some funded by the CRF), and the current study will take these findings further to identify actual DNA coding changes associated with the development and spread of this cancer. This will improve understanding about the development and spread of the cancer, helping to diagnose the cancer earlier and improve treatment.
Characterisation of pyometra-causing Escherichia coli in young and old dogs (Dr Natalie Krekeler, The University of Melbourne) Pyometra is one of the most common, life-threatening reproductive diseases in female intact dogs. Pyometra not only affects the animal’s health but also its breeding value. The pathogenesis of the disease is only incompletely understood. Previous studies undertaken at the University of Melbourne led us to hypothesize that the disease process differs between healthy young dogs and older dogs with uterine abnormalities. The aim of the present study is to characterize Escherichia coli (E. coli) isolates (bacteria that cause the disease) from young and old dogs affected by pyometra in order to investigate if bacterial strains between the two differ in their pathogenic profile, Another aim is to determine the presence of E. coli strains at different sites including the uterus, vagina and rectum and to type these strains in order to determine if the same strains are present at all sites. A third aim is to explore the biofilm forming potential of E. coli strains found in the canine urogenital tract. Bacterial biofilms have recently been the subject of investigation to explain recurrent disease, which is a feature of pyometra. In order to achieve these aims we propose to collect bacterial samples from dogs affected by pyometra and healthy control animals. The virulence of factor profile and biofilm forming potential for E. coli strains from young dogs will be compared with the profile of old dogs at the different anatomical sites. Healthy control animals of both age groups are included in the study.
Enteric Parasitism and the Aetiology of Diarrhoea in Puppies (Prof Richard Thompson, Murdoch University) Diarrhoea in puppies is a significant and ongoing problem for breeders. Although there are many possible factors that can contribute to diarrhoea such as overcrowding, stress and poor nutrition, diarrhoea occurs in well-nourished and cared for puppies and it is widely believed that enteric parasitism is the cause. However, there is uncertainty about which parasites are responsible, how they are transmitted, and how best to treat and control infections. The aims of this project are to identify the factors that contribute to diarrhoea in puppies prior to weaning and to optimise approaches to treatment and control. We will investigate which intestinal parasites are most common in puppies, when they first appear after birth, and the intestinal bacterial flora. This will be achieved by regular, twice weekly, faecal sampling of naturally infected puppies from birth to weaning. Such an intensive study has not been undertaken previously. The information obtained will identify when anti-parasitic drugs (anti-coccidial and anti-giardial) should be administered in order to prevent parasite multiplication and associated diarrhoea. The project is innovative because we will simultaneously characterise both parasite and bacterial (the ‘microbiome’) communities in the intestine using sophisticated molecular, DMA sequencing approaches in puppies on the same diet but exposed to different treatment regimes, including the administration of probiotics.
Genetic management of canine lymphoma (Assoc Prof Peter Williamson, University of Sydney) Cancer is a common cause of mortality in dogs. One of the most common forms of canine cancer is lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphocytes that accounts for approximately 25% of cancer cases. Lymphoma in dogs is in most cases treatable but not curable, with more aggressive forms leading to rapid decline and death within 1-6 months. The occurrence of this cancer is higher in some breeds compared to others, indicating that there may be specific gene mutations that cause the predisposition to developing the disease to be inherited. The aim of this study is to find the mutations that are causing lymphoma to occur and to use this information to inform dog breeders when deciding to mate their dogs. Herding Sub-Committee Annual Awards Presentation For Performance Dog Sports On Saturday 9th January, the Annual Awards Presentation function conducted by the Dogs Queensland Obedience State Trials Sub Committee was held at Durack. The evening is a celebration of the achievements of individual competitors and Clubs, an opportunity to get together and relax with fellow enthusiasts, and to recognise excellence in our sports. Participants enjoyed an amazing smorgasbord of food, and great entertainment by Swing Magic, an ensemble of local musicians playing swing jazz and traditional music from the 1920s, 30s and 40s. The ensemble includes double bass, saxophone, clarinet, rhythm guitar, flute and keyboard.

We were also delighted to welcome Dogs Queensland Directors, Lionel Blumel, Ainslie Carius and Norma Zimmerle and her husband, Kevin. Barbara and Col Murfet sent their congratulations and best wishes from their travels in Europe. Performance sports competitors really appreciate Directors taking an interest in and joining in the recognition of achievements in these fields. The evening saw the presentation of Championship and Grand Championship awards in Obedience, Tracking and Track and Search as well as Dog of the Year awards and Club shields. Championship Titles and Dog of the Year awards were based on applications from competitors; others may have achieved similar accomplishments but did not apply for their recognition at this function. It was especially pleasing to see so many different breeds qualifying for top honours.

ANKC Judge’s Profile The Queensland Dog World
Nigel Wood
All Breeds Judge, ANKC My first introduction to pure breed dogs was when I was 14 years old and lived in Singapore, where I obtained a German Imported Dobermann. When I returned to Australia I continued with Dobermann’s and was involved with the Obedience, and titled three dogs to C.D and U.D. I have been in the Show Scene since 1983, showing and Breeding Dobermann’s and along with my wife Lyn who has been involved in showing and breeding Shetland Sheepdogs since 1961, with many Best-In-Show and Titled dogs. We have owned, shown, and bred Bearded Collies, then moving onto the Non-Sporting Group 7 dogs owning, showing and breeding Lhasa Apso, German and Japanese Spitz, to their Grand Titles, with over 20 Best In Shows. We have exported to New Zealand, Singapore, UK, U.S.A, and Ireland. We also owned a Powder Puff and Hairless Crestie. I have judged in every state in Australia, and New Zealand, I have judged the Doberman Specialty, Qld, Australian Cattle Dog and Kelpie Club Qld, Old English Club Qld, Belgian Shepherd Club, Qld, Poodle Club Qld, Asian and Spitz Breeds Club NSW, Shetland Sheepdog Club North Island New Zealand. Open and Championship Shows for the Collie Club of Qld and the Toy Dog Club of Qld. I have held the positions of President for the following - Western Suburbs Kennel Club Qld for 3 years, Asian Breeds Club of Qld for 5 years, and at present I have been Vice-President for Brisbane Valley Kennel Club for 2 years. I was for 3 years Group 7 (Non-Sporting) co-ordinator and thoroughly enjoyed my time helping candidates and lecturing on these Breeds. My wife and I enjoy Showing and travel to Local, Country and Interstate Shows.

Library News The Queensland Queensland DogDog World World
ASIAN BREEDS
Part 2 Continuing on from February, Asian Breeds are also the feature for March. These Include Lhasa Apso, Tibetan Terrier, Pug and Japanese Chin. Reference books of all of these breeds are held in the Durack Library and while I cannot mention every book on the shelves, there are a few currently available to be borrowed:‘The New Complete Lhasa Apso’ by Norman and Carolyn Herbel – first published in 1979 and revised in 1992. The foreword in this edition state that the book is dedicated to the Tibetan people who have developed the breed we know as the Lhasa Apso - interesting book. Another on this breed is ‘Lhasa Apso – The Complete Owners Handbook’ revised edition published in 1987, author Sally Ann Vervaeke-Helf. Quite a large volume with 265 pages. ‘The Tibetan Terrier’ by Jane Reif and ‘Your Guide to the Tibetan Terrier’ by Mrs Emmy Manuel are just two of the books available on this breed. See the book review for more information on the The Tibetan Terrier. The Library holds several books on the Pug but one worth a mention here is ‘The Complete Pug’ by James W Trullinger – this also is a revised edition. Lastly, there is the Japanese Chin – like so many dog breed books this is also titled ‘The Complete Japanese Chin’ by Pamela Cross Stern and Tom Mather – see more information on this book in book review.
In the past, we have had many donations of books to the Library for which we have been grateful. However, the time has come where I can no longer accept donations of large collections of books – there is simply NO ROOM on the shelves. Recent donations have only included books which are already held in duplicate and this is a cause of some concern. However, if members feel that they would like to make donations, can you please check with either myself or the Dogs Queensland Office first. All books donated must be clean and of good quality. Library records show that there are books outstanding and need to be returned. If you have borrowed books, please can you return these. If the Library is closed, books can be left in the Show Secretary’s Office. I have organised with the Grounds Caretaker that any books left there will be put in the Library. Helen Acworth Librarian

Book Review The Queensland Dog World
MZ
This month’s member review is: ‘The Tibetan Terrier’ By Jane Relf
‘The Complete Japanese Chin’ By Pamela Cross Stern and Tom Mather
Reviewed by Helen Acworth Librarian The first of these two books – The Tibetan Terrier by Jane Reif has been dedicated by the author to “the people of Tibet with gratitude for the cherished breed they have shared : The Tibetan Terrier. May we be equal to the gift”. This book traces the beginnings in Tibet where the dogs roamed through sand and gravel deserts, with shaggy double coat and peripheral eyesight, a far cry from the Tibet Terriers as we know them as a show dog. This book covers so much information on the breed, it is amazing – full of photos etc. The other book I found of interest is The Complete Japanese Chin by Pamela Cross Stern and Tom Mather. Describing the origins of this breed, there seems to be some confusion re their origins, which actually may have been China and called the ‘Imperial Chin’ but has chapters covering the background of the Modern Japanese Chin. This book is full of coloured photos, etc and includes an illustrated Breed Standard issued by the Japanese Kennel Club.

Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World
55. Head is moderately narrow and not quite flat. The fall is parted centrally. The head is very slightly longer than wide when viewed from above. The widest part of the head is around the eyes. Ears are small, pendant and fairly highly set. They are heavily coated. Eye shape is very important as they add the right touch to the shape of the head. They are never round and should be larger and slightly almond shaped. Colour should be dark brown and have a soft expression which is preferably assisted by good pigmentation. 6 Measurements of length of muzzle is about one and a half 6. inches and should be roughly one third of the total head length from nose to the back of the skull. 7. 7 Head planes should be checked as many Lhasas are down faced, which is incorrect.
The Lhasa Apso A Ten Minute Synopsis on Judging of the Breed
10 min
Written by Patricia McLeod, International All Breeds judge and Lhasa Apso fancier 1. 1 This is a glamorous, long coated breed so has to be judged in a hands-on manner. A sound knowledge of canine anatomy is essential to recognise structure under long coats. 2. 2 Dogs are judged on the table and any time the judge seeks to revise or compare any points, the dog should be placed back on the table. They should never be examined on the ground. In the ring, the dog should never be placed on a table facing the sun. This applies particularly to dogs with a fall. 3. 3 Handlers should carefully lift the dog on to the table by placing hands under the dog. The rear should never be raised by the tail. 4. 4 Judge should realise that these were bred to be monastry guard dogs and in the standard it is noted that they are ‘chary of strangers’. Therefore, they should be approached accordingly. No aggression should be tolerated however. Usually, if there is any abhorrent behaviour, the nature of the dog is to be defensive rather than aggressive.
26 - March 2016
8. 8 Bites and dentition must be checked. Bite should be a reverse scissor. The incisors should be of good size and set in a straight line. And judges should count incisors as there have been a number of dogs with only four incisors where there should be six. Small misplaced incisors are not desirable. Scissor bites, level bites and undershot bites are not desirable. 9. 9 Lhasa fronts will be only three to four fingers wide. Legs should be straight. Humerus and scapula should be of equal length giving correct shoulder angulation. This area is a big problem in Lhasas. Many have upright shoulders with withers too high, thus giving cause to the inability to reach out while moving. Too many take many short steps in the front thus causing the driving from the hocks at the rear to result in the undesirable ‘kick up’. Another fault to have appeared in the breed is the shortness of leg. There should be a good reach of neck. Swan necks and upright shoulders have crept into some lines. 10 The standard requires that the dog be longer than it is tall. 10. Many people will offer opinions on proportions but in the standard no percentages are quoted. But the dog must be solid and compact, well muscled, well off for substance. Ribs are well sprung. A better way to check length of body is by measuring the coupling which should be very strong and a maximum of four fingers long. It is a very tough little dog, well equipped to tolerate the hostile climate and conditions of Tibet. Topline should be level and it should remain that way during movement. 11. 11 Hindquarters are strong and well muscled with good angulation and well let down, strong hocks, which are parallel when viewed from the rear. There should be no sign of weakness such as cow hocks or luxation of patellas.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World
12 12. Coat quality and texture can be felt quite readily. Top coat should be quite straight and as strong as human hair which it resembles in texture. Undercoat is dense. But the dog should be groomed so that the coat follows the form of the dog. The coat should never give a ‘fluffy’ appearance. The good groomers know just how much undercoat is needed. The judge should pick up a lock of hair and let it fall back in place. The correct coat will fall back neatly due to its weight. 13. Feet may be trimmed. However, as in other breeds, noticeable 13 scissoring is frowned upon under the rules of the governing body. Tolerance of the amount of trimming depends on the individual judge’s opinion of what is allowed by the rules of the particular governing body. 14 14. The tail is high set and well coated with long hair. It should always be carried up in exhibition. 15 15. Size varies. Many dogs will be half an inch over the standard. However it is, as with many breeds, always most important to see a balanced and typey exhibit. Nevertheless, excessive height is not acceptable. 16. Colours are varied. As in all breeds, fanciers have their favourites. 16 Dark points are desirable. Good pigmentation is necessary to maintain soft expression. Brown noses are undesirable. 17 17. Never use attention getting devices or whistles when judging Lhasas. It is beneath their dignity to reply. In fact the real test is that they will ignore such follies. 18. Many Lhasas are gaited far too fast in the ring. Many judges and 18 others stumble over the word ‘jaunty’ in the standard. Jaunty is not a particular gait, it is rather an attitude. There should be good reach and drive without ‘kick-up’. Topline should remain level. The topline should not bounce up and down. 19. To all judges... know the standard... know canine anatomy… 19 Forget what information is peddled on social media or in print… go out and judge the dogs carefully and knowledgeably… and everyone should be a lot happier. 20. And never let it be said by an exhibitor that their exhibit got 20 a massage instead of an examination. And above all, never give that classic reply to the question regarding how to tell the difference between Lhasa Apsos and Shih-Tzus… ”Oh! one has bows and the other does not!”. TRUE CHARM THE TIBETAN TERRIER Dogs Queensland Exclusive
Supplied by Sharon Lancey
The Tibetan Terrier (also referred to as the TT) is a wonderful, ancient, shaggy, charming delight of a breed.
Many top winning dogs started winning at 7+ years of age and are regularly placed in top honors at the age of 10 or 11 years old! The coat needs regular grooming and this can be a tough daily task, not for the fainthearted. This breed needs intelligent, sensitive people and must be accepted as part of the family unit. This sometimes means that they are not the easiest breed to train but great once they get the idea as they love to please their ‘family’.
They come in many colours, from black to pure white and almost every colour in between, as well as parti and tri colours and is very family orientated. They are intelligent, fearsome so at times they can be dominant with other breeders and some people. In spite of these unique characteristics they are NOT a Terrier.
What makes a TT look like a TT not a Beardie or Old English Sheepdog?
Tibetan Terriers are considered a good luck dog and were traditionally given as gifts by the monks. I started in TTs in 1983 by being given a TT, the true way to get into the breed and have had them in my life ever since.
Coat, a double coat is required, outer coat being fine, not coarse and never silky. It should not be heavy enough to fall straight down when dropped by human hands, rather it is the consistency of human hair.
The other thing I love about this breed is the fact they are and should be late maturing. The TT is known to be ‘mature’ at around 4 years of age and was often not bred from until after this age.
The coat was never meant to drop to the ground and ‘light’ should show under the body of the dog. Density of the coat was more prized than length. Remember they came from Tibet. Coat to the ground would have meant a very short life for any TT trying to survive in the roughest Tibetan terrain.
28 - March 2016
Size, the standard calls for dogs 14 – 16 inches and bitches slightly smaller, measured from withers to ground.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World
The coat of a show TT must NOT be trimmed/sculptured. Feet can be neatened but no more than that. Head, well we can read the standard for the correct wording/ measurement but most important to me is to have the most darkest of eyes and eye rims (even in gold/whites black eye rims are a must) you can get lost in those eyes. Not only does the dark pigment add to the TT’s expression, it also serves functional purposes; providing sun protection from the snow glare.
“The Tibetan Terrier (also referred to as the TT) is a wonderful, ancient, shaggy, charming delight of a breed” The same goes for the nose. The noses must be black but it is common to have ‘winter fade’ in gold and lighter colours. This is often only temporary. I have found bitches in season or with pups may ‘lose’ the blackness of the nose but returns once hormones etc settle. Feet – a hallmark of the breed is the very big, flat feet. Fairly round, there should be hair between the pads. Never cat footed or hare footed. No other breed (that I know of) has a foot like the TT.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
March 2016 - 29
Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World
Continued from page 29 The flat feet on the TT allows them to have a stable base from negotiating the harsh terrain of the Tibetan mountains to ploughing through snow covered fields. The other ‘quirk’, which is being lost a today, is the kink at the end of the tail! When I started in the breed, this was very common in the breed and judges often felt for it. There is still some with this but certainly not as common as it once was. As well as the wording ‘chary of strangers’ which for reasons unknown has been removed from the breed standard. The TT is not a breed that will take to just anyone and can be a little ‘standoffish’ with strangers. So it’s important that judges remember that the TTs are a tabled breed and should never be approached on the ground, this allows them time to see you and know which direction you are approaching them from.
However, they are a very versatile dog with TTs in Australia gaining Titles in Confirmation, Obedience, Agility, Herding, Tracking and Endurance. Hope you found this insight to the Tibetan Terrier interesting. Please feel free to come and meet the dogs or ask questions if you want more information. Source credits: Parts of this article has been taken from ‘Reflections on the TT’ by Jane Reif Photo credits: Supplied by Sharon Lancey
The TTs have never been numerically strong in the breed ring but have always consistently done well and achieved top awards.

Zone 2 Dog World Column March 2016
This was a great opportunity for us to enjoy our hobby whilst supporting a very worthy cause and despite the hot weather, members made the most of it.
As we move toward Easter, members are looking forward to the weather becoming a little cooler and the options of events and activities in the Zone increasing as the year moves on.
On a rough count, it was reported that over $5,000 has been raised for the weekend.
Many of our members who regularly travel to Brisbane will be pleased to see the progress that has been made on the camping application for Durack to permit onsite camping in motorhomes and mobile accommodation.
What’s On in Zone 2 in March? In March, Zone 2 members have a choice of several events to participate in, including: • • • • • • • • •
Callide Valley Canine Club Champ Shows (Rockhampton) - 5th and 6th March Proston PA & H Society Champ Ag Show (Proston) – 5th March Mackay Kennel Club Champ Shows (Mackay) – 12th and 13th March Rockhampton Dog Obedience Club Dog Obedience, Agility, Jumpers and Games Trials (Rockhampton) – 12th and 13th March Gladstone Dog Obedience Club Obedience, Rally-O Trails (Gladstone) – 19th and 20th March Goomeri & District Show Society Champ Ag Show (Goomeri) – 19th March Bundaberg Easter Eggstravaganza! (6 x Champ Shows / International Judges) – 25th, 26th and 27th March Magpies Mackay and District Obedience Club Obedience and Double Rally-O Trials – 26th March Gympie and District Kennel Club Champ Show (Gympie) – 28th February
There also several other events just outside of Zone 2 two that our members will be travelling to.
Drought Relief Fundraiser Shows
I would like to say a massive thank you and congratulations to Susie Carige and Janelle Shailer who worked exceptionally hard to make the fundraising shows possible. I would also like to thank our judges Mr Tony Valli (NSW) and Mrs Noreen Harris (VIC) for officiating over the weekend, the Gladstone Kennel Club for the tip-top facility they provided, all the stewards and writers who gave up their time to work and the exhibitors for their wonderful support – well done all! Also, a huge thank you to those who sponsored the event (I hope I have them all and totally apologise if I have left anyone out) – Ken O’Dowd (Federal Member for Flynn), Show Manager, Dogs Queensland, Sandra Mundt, Gloria Carige, Gladstone Small Motor Services, Annabel Wolf (The Wolfs Den) and Harbour Lodge Motel, plus everyone who put an entry / entries in for the virtual show. We have a great photo spread of the weekend with this article, which has been kindly provided by Crissie Fornasier – thanks Crissie!
Camping at Durack Regional members will all be pleased to see the progress being made in relation to camping at the Durack Grounds. To date, only tent camping has been permitted on the site, however, an application was lodged to the Brisbane City Council to permit motorhomes, caravans and other mobile accommodation which will provide many more opportunities for members to stay on site and participate in shows at Durack. At the time of writing, a sign calling for public comment about the proposal was being displayed and I am very hopeful that there will have been an outcome by the time this column is published.
A very successful weekend was conducted in Gladstone on 23rd and 24th January with two Championship Shows to raise funds for Drought Relief initiatives.

A few tips for being involved in Clubs:
Getting involved in Clubs
•
We all enjoy the events and activities that we are able to participate in, but do we stop to consider that these are all possible because of the efforts of dedicated Club members who are a ‘breed’ in decline.
• •
Recently we have seen several Clubs in trouble because of lack of members and unfortunately there have been some Clubs that have closed down.
•
Good Clubs have fun and enjoy a happy, positive environment – while we may not always agree with everything, we do need to acknowledge that Clubs are a democracy and we are working towards a common overall goal;
•
Good Clubs have members that respect one another – apart from meetings where everyone talks over the top of each other, there is conflict or certain people always dominating discussion being a train-wreck and a waste of time, if we listen to each other respectfully, everyone has the opportunity to participate in the discussion – Club members feel valued when they are listened to and acknowledged.
While we can attribute this to a sad reality in our society where time is becoming more and more precious, we also need to think that perhaps we could all do something to contribute to the sustainability of these small, non-profit, community organisations. Please think about joining a local Club. It doesn’t necessarily mean a lot of work as most clubs are grateful to receive any support they can, no matter how insignificant we think it might be. The saying that many hands make light work certainly rings true and if our clubs are to survive we will all need to support them.
Good Clubs are focussed on development and working together towards common goals – there is no room for personal agendas or autocratic behaviour; Good Clubs involve all their members in decisions and the direction of the Club – Clubs don’t exist for dominant parties to wield control over its members;
Please look at joining a Club today – the Dog World will thank you for it and it just might be fun.
Submissions Submissions for the column of news or photos are always welcome. Please feel free to send to me at: craig.pettett1@bigpond.com Until next time. Photo credits: Supplied by Crissie Fornasier

The old chrone bent over her pot and stirred the contents, then put a Border Collie puppy in it and added her spell— suddenly out from ‘Collie Castle’ came a fully grown Border Collie, to perform tricks and moves (the puppy was of course a stuffedtoy!). Maree Rablin and ‘Styler’ put on a new routine much to the delight of all (pictured top right). A cracking start to the year with our first DWD Competition on 30th January. A big welcome to three new ladies from Northern NSW who competed for the very first time and did very well.

Congratulations to Rachel (also from Northern NSW) who gained her HTM Starters Title. CANINE CONDITIONING WORKSHOP Dogs Queensland Exclusive
Supplied by Gay Westmore In November 2015, the Pine Rivers Dog Training Club conducted a Canine Conditioning Workshop with Teresa Crich from NSW. This is in line with the Club’s commitment to supporting a variety of training and related activities; currently its members engage in pet dog training, Obedience and Rally-O Trialling, Flyball and Dances with Dogs training and competition. There is increasing recognition across the dog world of the importance of dogs being fit and well-conditioned, especially if they are involved in active dog sports, such as Obedience, Agility, Flyball, Canine Disc, Dock Diving and/or Herding as well as Conformation Showing. Human athletes are highly aware of the need to condition their bodies in order to compete at the optimal level and reduce the potential for injury. Dogs are no different.
38 - March 2016
Workshop participants learnt about conditioning our dogs so that they can compete, play and live life optimally, with reduced potential for injury. Teresa Crich has been a professional dog trainer for the last 15 years and has developed very effective strategies for improving the fitness and strength of her dogs and those of others whom she has coached. She is a very effective communicator and participants thoroughly enjoyed working with Teresa and their dogs on a variety of exercises. The workshop was conducted in two sessions, the first for young dogs and those with little or no experience in the area of canine conditioning. The afternoon session then introduced more advanced exercises for those with some or a lot of experience. Handlers and observers also learnt how best to work with their dogs to engage their core, increase their body awareness and generally to improve their fitness. This work is not only beneficial to them physically, it is also great fun for them and contributes to building a great relationship between dog and handler. Photo credits: Supplied by Gay Westmore

AN UNSUNG
QUEENSLANDER Written by Patricia McLeod, International All Breeds Judge In a world where self-aggrandisement seems to flourish, it is very refreshing to know that in our midst there is one person who has gained international renown without ever seeking glory. I refer to a man who has performed great service toward the betterment of the breed he fancies. I am referring to Dogs Queensland member and Lhasa Apso fancier, Arnold Townson.
Debbie Hart and Zed demonstrating the importance of a neutral spine and equal weight distribution in all exercises on the peanut
Arnold has attained this international renown for the quality of his compilation of a data base of pedigrees in his chosen breed. Arnold is regularly consulted about pedigrees by leading breeders and fanciers from countries world wide. Breeders are very appreciative of the depth of knowledge that is available to them from the work of this devotee of the breed. He has always been a dedicated dog fancier. His early years were spent in Cairns in Far North Queensland. He has shown Lhasa Apsos for many years. Illness forced him to cease active exhibiting some years ago. But ill health could not extinguish his desire to continue recording as many pedigrees as he could source from all points of the globe. It should not be forgotten that he was a very successful exhibitor of some super Lhasa Apsos. He continues to judge the Non Sporting Group and enjoys all of his appointments. Arnold’s hobby has put Queensland on the map for all Lhasa Apso fanciers in the world. We, who are Dogs Queensland members can be justly proud to know that a fellow member is so widely acclaimed for his endeavours.

peak to anyone involved in running dog Shows and they’ll all tell you the same thing – they need more workers! I’ll be the first to admit in the last year, my contribution to my favourite Clubs has been minimal. By ‘minimal’, I mean non-existent. So, in the spirit of being the change I want to see in the Dog World in 2016, I have gone in search of information on where to start. I didn’t have to go far! I sat down for a chat with Ainslie Carius* and Ian Rasmussen** and without a doubt, the first thing to do is to go along to a meeting of your local Club and sign up. Don’t be shy! A good tip is to go to the Clubs that run the shows you really like, chances are you will like the Committee. Join a few Clubs and go to a few meetings then focus your efforts on the Club you feel the most comfortable in. Aside from helping your favourite shows to flourish, you can really benefit from getting involved in Kennel Clubs as well.
40 - March 2016
Of course, if you are a new exhibitor or new-to-the-area, joining a Club is a great way to meet people and make friends, which always makes your Show experience nicer. Another good point from Ainslie is that joining a Club ‘can be an avenue to explore different interests’. Have you ever wondered if you might be amazing at Dances With Dogs or Agility, but don’t know where to start? Chances are your multi-discipline Clubs can point you in the right direction! Now let’s put our honesty caps on for a minute. I admit that I love getting in the ring and one of my main hesitations in getting involved in running Shows is that I want to show my dogs. So first, lets clear up the rules about stewarding. ‘Ring Stewards may enter dogs in groups not judged by the judge they are attending, but cannot leave the ring to exhibit at Shows conducted in Zone 1’. Writers in Zone 1 similarly can enter dogs, but not in groups that they officiate at. So, if you’re chasing challenge points and are happy to let someone else show your dogs for the day, by all means volunteer as a Steward or Writer. Remember though, that Zone 1 Show Managers cannot enter dogs or exhibit, but I don’t think we’re quite there yet! The good news is for Zone 2 and 3 exhibitors is that you can leave the ring you are stewarding in to exhibit, as long as you are exhibiting in a group not judged by the Judge you are attending. Writers and Show Managers in Zone 2 and 3 also have more relaxed restrictions in order to encourage entries.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
Member Insight The Queensland Dog World
It turns out though, there are a tonne of things you can do to help run a Show, without having to commit to Stewarding or sacrifice ring time! Here are some things that your local Club will be stoked if you can help out with: -
Spend some time helping out in the canteen or kitchen
-
Shows at most grounds other than Durack will need a hand setting up rings and gazebos, then packing down again at the end
-
Sell some raffle tickets on Show days
-
Most Clubs do some fundraising between Shows as well, so you can definitely help there without sacrificing ring time
If you’re lucky enough to be in an area where there are specific breed Clubs (am I showing my country roots here?), have a think about volunteering for a breed Club other than the breed that you actually show. Sound crazy? Bear with me.
“A good tip is to go to the Clubs that run the Shows you really like, chances are you will like the Committee. Join a few Clubs and go to a few meetings then focus your efforts on the Club you feel the most comfortable in” While chatting to Ian, he mentioned that some Clubs go to extreme measures to ensure that the Committee can Show and maintain integrity by not associating with the judges. This means judges get off the train or plane and have to organise their own taxi to their accommodation, where they find cash in their rooms to buy dinner the night before a Show. The first contact the judges have with the Committee is when they rock up on Show day.
Plus you have an opportunity to meet a Judge and make friends from different areas. It’s a win-win! I couldn’t finish this article without mentioning that it’s not just Conformation Clubs and events that need your help. If you are involved with any of the fantastic disciplines coordinated by the ANKC, then really think about getting involved. The Clubs need you, and there are so many benefits in it for you as well! Have I got you convinced? Some Clubs offer a discount to new members for their first year, and membership costs anywhere between $5 and $20 for the year. There is a minimum number of members that Clubs need to have in order to stay afloat, so at the very least, becoming a member in itself is helpful even if you never go to a single meeting. A big thanks to my contributers this month, Ainslie and Ian. Also thanks for having me to the Clubs I have joined so far, Beenleigh Kennel Club and the Chihuahua Club of QLD! I’ll leave you with a quote from Ainslie that resonated with me “Win or lose, you’re taking the best dog home”. Until April my friends, Ash Xx * Ainslie Carius is the Dogs Queensland Senior Vice President, President of the Bassett Hound Club, Secretary of the Hound Club and a Committee Member for the Gundogs and Heavy Breeds Club. ** Ian Rasmussen is an All Breeds Judge, President of the Whippet Club, President of the QLD Sighthound Association, Chair of both the Dogs QLD Junior Handlers Committee and the ANKC Junior Handlers Committee and a Committee Member of the ANKC National Breed Standards Group.
So, keep following me here. If you could volunteer for another breed Club that you don’t show in, you could be the friendly face that picks up the Judge at the airport, takes them to dinner and shows them a lovely time. You thereby take the pressure off the Committee and enable them to enter their Show and maintain their integrity.

Mrs Anne Raymond (SA) Anne and her family bred their first litter of German Shorthaired Pointers in 1982 and since then have produced some 30 plus champions under the Valache prefix. Importing five GSP's from the UK, Romania, Canada and then more recently US, has added to their gene pool, and a small team of highly successful Dobermanns owned and handled by Anne's daughter Kate complete the Valache canine family. Anne was granted her Gundog Championship Show License in 1987, and has since qualified to judge Toys, Terriers, Hounds and the Utility Group. She has judged in all States of Australia and both the North and South Island of New Zealand, as well as Mexico, Scotland and the UK. Mrs Pauline Hewitt (NSW) Pauline has been showing and breeding dogs with her husband for the past 40 odd years. Their priority breed has always been Afghan Hounds, breeding under the Khandhu Prefix. They have also been involved with the Saluki, Whippet, and Lhasa Apso breeds. Their legacy to Afghan Hounds has been breeding scores of Afghan champions, and Khandhu remains the top Australian Specialty Best In Show winning kennel in breed history. Pauline has been judging all hounds for the past 35 years, and all gundogs for the past 25 years. She has been privileged to judge hounds and gundogs not only in Australia, but also in England, Europe, Scandinavia, America and New Zealand, and she is delighted to add Brookfield to the list of beautiful places she has judged at.
