Dogs Queensland has become increasingly aware of Puppy Scam Websites using legitimate Dogs Queensland Registration and Queensland Breeder Identification (BIN) Numbers to sell puppies. Dogs Queensland Registration Numbers are obtained from legitimate websites such as Dogs Queensland or DogzOnline, where they are displayed as required by the Queensland Government.

Breeder Alert – Puppy Scam Websites

Please see the Queensland Dog Breeder Fact Sheets for regulations and guidelines for Queensland Dog Breeders.

An example of a typical scam is: • A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet. • The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix. • A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry. • Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published. • No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website. • The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures. • The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.

As a breeder what can you do to avoid being an unknowing victim of a Puppy Scam: • Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix. • Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate. • Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct in- person contact with you. • Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details. • Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.

As a buyer what can you do to avoid being a victim of a Puppy Scam: • Verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland. • Ensure communications are made to verified contact details. • Meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments. • If paying online, use a credit card or PayPal where you have a degree of buyer protection. • Check website is an established site with a website security certificate. • Avoid websites without physical address or phone numbers. • Ask for proof, including ANKC registration papers and veterinary health records for any puppy. Importantly you should report any suspect sites or advertising to the ACCC ScamWatch website. Please let us know about any suspect websites too by contacting Dogs Queensland on 3252 2661 or by email at info@dogsqueensland.org.au.

President’s Message

O

ver the last month or so we have had some highs and lows in our dog world with some challenges to deal with. We feel for those in NSW and Victoria dealing with a surge in outbreaks of the Delta variant and longterm lockdowns. The focus on getting vaccinated has been excellent and great to see the supplies of vaccine increasing all the time. We have been comparatively fortunate in Queensland, but it is so important that we not be complacent and that we do all we can to protect ourselves, our families and friends and those we come in contact with. I had my second vaccination a couple of weeks ago and it has given me a more confident feeling. I can recommend it! Protester outside Durack Showgrounds Members may have been wondering about a man holding placards outside our grounds at Durack on and off over several weeks. It is important that members are kept informed about key issues of concern. This man is a German Shepherd enthusiast who was a member of Dogs Queensland many years ago. There were Code of Conduct issues on foot. He resigned his membership before action could be continued against him for breaches of the members’ Code of Conduct. The then Council determined to ban him from the grounds. He subsequently made a serious threat against a former President of the then Canine Control Council (Queensland). The banning order has stayed largely on foot since that time. His partner continues as a member of Dogs Queensland. Over the years he and his partner have applied to have this banning order lifted. There has been considerable ongoing support in the German Shepherd Club for the continuation of this banning order. A few years ago, the former Board decided to give him another chance by granting him a Community Membership of Dogs Queensland. Following further problems on the grounds this was cancelled and the ban order was reinstated. More recently some discussions and negotiations occurred with this man and the club about allowing him access to the grounds. These were unsuccessful and the Board determined at its August meeting to continue the ban indefinitely. The Board and Mr Harrison have received a barrage of emails from this man that have been copied to key people in the breed both nationally and internationally. The emails

have contained libellous and untrue allegations about Mr Harrison, our highly regarded General Manager and Secretary to the Board. This has been compounded by the quite scurrilous and defamatory wording of the protest placards that he has brandished just outside the entrance gates at the Durack Showgrounds targeting mainly Mr Harrison but also me. Mr Harrison has simply been doing his job in his chief executive role and it is totally unacceptable for him to be targeted and defamed in this manner. We owe a duty of care to all our employees to protect them from such extreme conduct. For this reason, the Board facilitated Mr Harrison seeking legal advice from a defamation law specialist. I will keep members informed of action taken. Blue Cards Just a reminder to all Junior Handler Judges to use the link provided by the office in a recent email to apply for the required Blue Card. All directors are in the process of obtaining Blue Cards as well. All Dogs Sports Spectacular 2021 has been a year of flexibility with the scheduling of events in our dog world. The good news is that the ADSS Conformation section of the committee and Grounds Committee have come together for a Christmas 3 day fund raising event – Friday night, Saturday night and early Sunday morning show (17, 18 and 19 December 2021). Please support this special 3 day event in any way you can. It should be a terrific pre-Christmas event showcasing our wonderful world of dogs. Dogs Queensland Show Bags It was sad that the Ekka was cancelled for a second year but a bouquet to Senior Vice-President Carolyn Pearen for her great suggestion that we refresh the show bags and go ahead and sell them for the sale price of $10 a bag. At the last count 418 bags have been sold. Keep a lookout for a limited number of Show Bags for sale at the Zone 2 Amenities shows and the Bundaberg Canine Club shows on Friday 3 to Sunday 5 December 2021.

Stay safe and let’s keep our dogs and ourselves vaccinated. – Ulla Greenwood, President Dogs Queensland

HISTORY

FOX TERRIER (SMOOTH) FOX TERRIER (WIRE)

A quick overview of the ‘Fox Terrier’, both the Smooth Coated and the Wire Coated have a long history behind them – as stated in many articles published over the years. The breed originated in England where most Terriers were developed. The background of the breeding is not well documented however a combination of the Old English White, Manchester, Black and Tan Terrier, Beagle and Ruff Coated Terriers were involved. These breeds are behind a vast majority of other terrier breeds. Up until the latter half of the 1800’s any smaller sized dog that could ‘bolt’ a fox, was agile, quick and kept the mice and similar vermin at bay was called a Fox Terrier! The Fox Terriers were mainly vermin hunters and are still well known today for getting rid of mice, rats and any other vermin that happens to be either above or below the ground or anywhere within their territory. After doing the protective rounds of the property a Fox Terrier is quite happy to sit on your lap, sit in front of the heater on a cold night or in front of the cooling fan during a hot day. The breed is great with children and makes a great companion. The Fox Terriers became very popular around the 1800’s when fox hunting began. It was soon realised that a versatile hunting dog with Terrier instincts was needed – one that could go to ground and bolt the foxes out of their dens, yet small enough to pop in the saddle bags. They needed to be strong enough to tackle fox or whatever vermin they encountered either below or above ground, hence the statement in the Breed Standard which describes them as ‘Strength in a small compass’. This is when the breed started to develop to what we see in the Fox Terrier of today.

Fox Terriers of today. Some of the early Fox Terriers that had a major influence on the development of the breed include ‘Pitch’ in 1790 Fox Terrier by Sawrey Gilpin (1793 – 1807), Cheroot born in 1886 and is a link between the working Fox Terriers of the early 19th century and the show dogs at the end of the century. Old Jock (1859), Grove Nettle (1862), Old Tartar (1862), Oxonian, Donna Fortuna, Result, more recent Fox terriers (Smooth) -Nornay Sadler (1936), Leathal Weapons (1943), Brooklands Black Ace (1952), Watteau Chorister (1954), Watteau Snuff Box (1962), Farleton Don Pedro just to name a few. Some of the top Fox Terriers (Wire) Oakleigh Topper (1880), Crackler of Notts (1898), Comedian of Notts bred and owned by Her Grace, the Duchess of Newcastle, Dusky Siren (1903), OLcliffe Captain (1912), Beau Brummel of Wildoaks, Crackley Straightaway, Harrowhill Huntsman Best in Show at Crufts in 1978. The following article is a small trip down memory lane showing the slow change in style with the careful selective breeding of more than a century of passionate and devoted breeders. More than most other breeds, Fox Terriers have had a great number of famous identities since the beginning of dog shows, recording the breeding and development of Smooths and Wires with all the famous prefixes involved. Many of the famous judges of the past were Fox Terrier fanciers, the Fox Terrier Club (England) founded in 1876 is still one of the most respected clubs in U.K., where the first standard was drawn up. The Standard of Points, originally drawn up in 1876, is still printed as a guide these days and is well

During this period of development the Fox Terrier could either have a smooth flat coat, a harsh wiry coat or somewhere in between. Over a period of time, through selective breeding, they have developed into two breeds with the same basic characteristics. Coat type and markings are the main variances of the breed. The original Breed Standard was drawn up in 1876 by the Fox Terrier Club in the UK which held its first show in 1877 in UK. Some of the original paintings from this time can be seen on many Fox Terrier Club websites in England and around the world showing how the breed has evolved to the

worth keeping these points in mind when assessing a Fox Terrier. One of the most Famous English artists of the Smooth Fox Terriers was Mr Arthur Wardle with the famous oil painting of Francis Redmond’s Totteridge X1, in the late 1890’s plus many other famous Fox Terriers at the time. The popularity of the Fox Terrier quickly grew and they soon became one of the most popular breeds around the world right up to the middle of the last century. They are still very popular although the numbers are far less. ‘The short-backed hunter covering a lot of ground, with bone and strength in a small compass.’ We still look for the alert expression on the tiptoe of expectation and the square outline with short back, quality bone in legs and feet and bang on tail set. It is interesting to look at Fox Terriers today and almost see the same outline, features and character as the original breed standard, however the breed has improved considerably in appearance since the early days but not lost any of his courage or ability to do the work he was called upon to do. The work he has been called upon to perform for many generations included, follow the fox to earth besides possessing activity, pluck, dash and stamina with a constitution strong enough to battle with the stable and yard life he had to lead. All this and still possess good manners, intelligence and aristocratic bearing combined with beauty of conformation. He is an excellent companion, faithful and a first-class house guard and is one of the most popular breeds of the Terrier family.

Breed information Smooth and Wire Fox Terrier By the Late Peter Luyten, Past President, Fox Terrier Club of Victoria Both breeds have strong support from serious breeders, many of whom consistently import fresh blood when felt desirable, to keep the breeds winning in the top echelon at the world’s major shows. Popularity of both coats has drawn back from the period of the 1920s to the mid-1940s, during which period our grandparents made these breeds the most popular in the world. Wirehaired Fox Terriers in particular were registered in the U.K. by the Kennel Club in their tens of thousands, when King George’s faithful Wire accompanied his master everywhere and was even included in the marchers of his late owner’s funeral cortege. Smooths were kept in huge numbers in Australia and would make up more than 50% of all the entries at shows at Sydney Royal during the depression period of the 1930s. They were hardy, cheap to keep and kept down the vermin free of charge. Smooth Fox Terriers are a perfect model of balanced

conformation, vibrant good health, excellent stable character, ease of grooming, and ideal house dog size who will outplay any child, out jog any teenager on training manoeuvres, and be a source of pride and delight out walking or shopping with its master or mistress. The breed is free of almost any hereditary health problems, as serious breeders have excluded such problems from their breeding plans by severe selection. Should the showing bug bite you, you are one step ahead of most countries, as to supply and availability of top-class Smooth Fox Terriers. Foundation stock here is better and cheaper than any other country on earth. Many of the bloodlines here have been jealously guarded over many decades and the end results are superior in a number of kennels in Australia. Breeders from overseas, including the judges who visit here in assignments, attempt to take advantage of the excellent blood which is already here, and has been bred here in the last 50 years, based on the very best which England had to offer between the world wars, and with several imports from the U.K. since, the current results are amongst the best in the world, if judged best to best. Due to lack of numbers, we do not have the depth through the classes as we would like which only the Americans now have, largely as the result of importation from Australia plus Ireland and England in the last few decades. Some of these American dogs are now here doing sterling service refreshing certain kennels in Perth and Adelaide.

and small game alone, but the rewards are endless. They are quite patient to stay at home in the regular routine of the household going to work or school, and you will get the most excited welcome home. They have the capacity to amuse themselves given a few simple toys, and will let you know when strangers are about especially during the day. The Wire I see more as a member of a serious military organisation such as the Grenadier Guards, especially at shows where they are preened and polished, and have the deportment as befits a colour sergeant on parade, they do not walk but march to display their tailored jackets plus leggings called "e; furnishings & quote. Their attitude to other dogs is one of always being prepared to accept any challenge and rebuff any insults by physical intervention if needs be. After all, if you have spent many months having your coat and attitude nurtured to fever pitch and you know that you’re human is always there on the other end of the lead to back you up, in that knowledge you can chase all the demons from your patch, even if you are only there for the day. Making a good show of intense military training has after all bluffed many an adversary into giving up the fight before it began. Strategy and show is everything to these guys. If you like a game dog with a huge heart, a sporting attitude, unbridled enthusiasm and boundless energy, who lowers his colours to no-one, who is totally trustworthy with your kids try one on for size. You will no doubt discover the reason that in your grandfather’s era these were the most popular dog in the entire world. Not only in the show ring the Fox Terrier is a versatile dog as you can see in agility, obedience, lure coursing, inground hunting and tracking.

When asked about the character of the two varieties, I tend to compare the Smooth with a boy scout. Full of fun, energy, out for a giggle, and quite disarming in their boyish charm towards strangers. They tend to take life as it comes and don’t see the dark side of life at all. Their athleticism and self- confidence and honesty, plus their uncontrolled enthusiasm endear them to almost everyone except rats, mice, running cats and slow possums. They take persistence to train to leave poultry

DOG WORLD October 2021

So, has the Smooth Fox Terrier changed much in over a century? Well, it certainly is still capable of doing what it was bred for, but is now a much more streamlined dog. Breeders still need to remain vigilant and read the writings of our forebears and be prepared to return to the standard and be willing to appreciate something new at the next show. There have been so many wonderful dogs and breeders over the years that it is impossible to name them all in this article who have contributed significantly to the breed, we have named just a few of the major winning dogs. It is an exciting time in Australia with the recent imports in several states with breed numbers and breeders increasing which helps keep our wonderful breed in the forefront of the terriers. It is pleasing to see new breeder judges emerging and we certainly wish them well with a long and fulfilling career. *Above References and Snippets: Supplied by: the Secretary, Fox Terrier Club of Victoria Inc. and the Fox Terrier Club of Qld

A GREAT WEEKEND AWAY WITH OUR DOGS

– Ann Shannon, DWD Judge

Following my write-up on the The Big4 Gold Coast Holiday Park (opposite Movieworld) in the March 2021 edition of the Dog World magazine, a group of 30 of us booked into the Park for a Tricks Training Weekend.

The photo (below left) shows the Dog Café where we had our crates and eating area and the indoor centre for training. Most of us had accommodation on site (dogs are allowed inside the cabins) and enjoyed the off lead dog parks and also long walks with the dogs on the 32 acres. The pool, water slide and Café were just next door and it was great to have all our meals delivered to our area and be able to eat with the dogs. On the Saturday night we put on a DWD K9 Cabaret for the park management and visitors. It was very well received and we had 15 colourful and exciting routines for them all to watch. We are looking forward to booking into the Park again.

JUNIOR HANDLER STATE FINAL 2021 – David Margan

OUR FUTURE ….

SAMANTHA PAGE AND ELLA CAMPBELL

One of the very special events on our yearly calendar are the State Junior Dog Handler Finals. And so on Sunday a group of family, friends and enthusiastic junior handlers gathered for the contest. Jodie Delacourt who has been a junior handler judge for 22 years said; “We are mentoring the next generation and it is so important for the future growth of our community.” How do you judge ones so young? What was Jodi looking for? “It’s the whole package, teamwork, communication, free and smooth movement and presentation. For me it’s like looking at a work of art, but what’s very important, is that they are enjoying themselves.” The cutest of all no doubt are the ‘Tiny Tots’. The winner there was 4 year old Gracelyn Watt with her long coat Chihuahua, Emily, “it’s really fun to get a ribbon and I like her because she helps me win.” Judge Jodie, who would have won the day’s best dressed award, if there was one, said; “It’s all about getting them started, even without a dog they’re still learning, the motions, the moves and learning how to communicate with the dog and of course, the fun of it all.” One of the stars of the show was 15 year old, Ella Campbell, who was awarded Queensland Junior Handler of the Year. Surrounded by almost three generations of dog breeders and handlers she has been involved since birth; “I’ve always loved it, its such fun, connecting and communicating with different breeds and as for winning the state title, it’s just amazing.”

16

DOG WORLD October 2021

Her ambition is to go to the Nationals and compete, why even Crufts! For the older contestants their skills are sorely tested when they have to swap a dog and handle a total stranger in the ring. As Jodie says; “You see their ability to exert control, keeping their cool when things don’t go exactly right and to keep on working with the dog.” There were no boy entrants this year which is not surprising when average male entries in Junior Handler events hover around a low 1%. It’s an issue we need to try and confront as the young are our future and this is an arena of values that transcend gender, Jodie again; “I also keep a watchful I on how the contestants relate to each other. What is also very important is sportsmanship, working together and respecting their fellow contestants” And the winner? Well everyone who participates and has a go, that’s the Dog World. Footnote: One disappointing moment was when a ground announcement encouraging others to come and watch the final was met with but a few. We do need to more supportive of each other, especially when it involves our young stars.

DOGS QUEENSLAND – STATE RETRIEVING CHAMPIONSHIP

TAMBORINE – 18 AND 19 SEPTEMBER 2021 At the start of this weekend, it seemed quite surreal. We were actually here! Beautiful classic Queensland weather, awesome new trialling grounds and the everpresent threat of a lockdown being announced the night before, gone.

nibbles and trophies presented beautifully, whilst my two secretaries, Nikki and Carol, having much neater handwriting than me, set about writing out the winner’s names upon the copious amounts of certificates.

The madness of the year, the drama, the cancellation of the National Retrieving Trial, the reorganising of a thousand things, the pressure, gone. Now just the challenge of pulling off a great event in front of us. Thankfully, it was all hands on deck once we got going. Our wonderful Chief Steward, Paul took charge with his very trusty sidekicks, Daryl, Greg and Callum. These guys worked there tirelessly for 4 straight days, ably assisted during the weekend by their team of volunteers on guns and throwers. Friday night saw most of the competitors come together in excited anticipation, a few drinks (not many), lots of sausages and lots of laughs. Saturday saw a beautiful clear sky over the calming lake we were camped beside and a real buzz in the air. The anticipation was palpable, the bacon and eggs were delicious, the team on point and handlers more nervous than I have seen in a couple of years. The weekend proceeded like clockwork thanks to the excellent preparation by the Judges – Ron Jackson and Anthony Turner, and the stewards. The surviving warriors returned to the campsite to await the Judges decision. Thankfully, almost everyone involved in the weekend was able to be there to witness the celebrations and congratulate the placegetters. Well done! The Ladies buzzed around getting the scene set with

COLLAPSE Joanne Bibby – Fursafe®

You’re walking along with your dog and out of the blue your pup collapses!

If your dog collapses, the last thing you want to do is assume their heart has stopped and you fly into CPR.

If your dog’s heart is beating, you could actually stop it by administering CPR. CPR is only to be used on a dog after you have ascertained that there is no pulse! What we need to do is follow a set of protocols and leave the rest up to the Vet.

CAUSES OF COLLAPSE The following substances may cause an allergic reaction within your dog:

• •

Medical condition; Allergic reaction to insect sting or bite (e.g., bees, wasps, ants);

• Electric shock; • Heat stroke; • Poisoning, i.e., ticks, chemicals including fumes; • Seizure; • Choking; • Snake bite; • Cane Toad toxin; • Excessive exercise. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

Where medical conditions are known your Vet will advise the best precautions for your dog, however assuming no known conditions exist, consider the following:

22

DOG WORLD October 2021

Limit exercise to cooler parts of the day and where possible keep to the shade as much as possible;

Assess the area where your dog is exploring, what can you see that may be out of place, unusual or toxic;

Keep chemicals out of reach; don’t leave them around the garden;

Fence off any area where you use pesticides or rodenticides;

Check for ticks after your dog has been to the park, played in long grasses or bush lands;

Identify the plants in and around your home and remove if they are toxic;

• •

Check out where your dog is walking or what they are standing on to reduce the risk of being stung or bitten;

• • •

Lock away medications; Talk to your Vet about other potential allergies; Vaccinate as scheduled by your Vet.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS Your dog may show some or all of the following:

Your dog may appear confused, disorientated or dazed.

• • •

Eyes do not seem to focus.

• • •

They begin to wobble as they walk.

Breathing speeds up. Gums have altered in colour; pale even, possibly dark pink / red or blue. Involuntarily falling over. Collapsed out of the blue.

First Aid:

ACTION 1. Undertake Primary Assessment a.

Check the airway for blockages or foreign objects; remove if there is. If your dog has been vomiting finger swipe or use a tongue depressor to scoop out the vomit. Keep airway open; extend neck, pull tongue forward.

b.

Check the breathing (respirations) e.g., count the rise and fall of the chest – start artificial respiration if not breathing. Is the breathing normal or shallow, fast or not breathing? Monitor all the way to the Vet!

c. Check circulation (pulse) – does your dog have a pulse? Start CPR if no pulse. 2. Undertake a secondary assessment. Work your hands and eyes head to tail – don’t forget to include in between paws, in ears, mouth, genitals, tail. 3. If your dog vomits or defecates report description of contents to Vet. 4. Treat for shock. 5. Assess for possible spinal injury; secure to stretcher. 6. Monitor / manage for seizures. 7. Assess for possible snake bite and treat as required. 8. Assess and treat for possible heat stroke. 9. Assess for possible tick paralysis and remove ticks as required. 10. Assess and treat for possible cane toad poisoning. 11. If dog is breathing, try rubbing a little honey into gums or on lips. 12. Wrap dog in blanket securely and place in create or box.

13. Speak soothingly and stroke to keep calm and quiet. 14. Transport to Vet. 15. Monitor breathing during transport to vet. If you can get someone to drive you:

Sit in the back with your dog.

Monitor during transport to vet to make sure your dog is breathing.

If your dog stops breathing, begin artificial respiration.

If your dog’s heart stops beating, begin CPR.

A Day In The Life Of.....

‘Pearl’ – Blood Donor – Peter Boniface PEARL’S DAY BEGINS Pearl’s day begins as any other day. She has her normal routine in the morning with only one difference. She has to forgo her breakfast as this is important to ensure that her blood donation is not too fatty when collected. When Pearl arrives at the underwood clinic, she is met with opens arms by one of the Pet ICU blood bank nurses. She then follows either Peter or Wendy (her parents) into the donation room trying to jump on all the consult room tables along the way. Pearl has a love for being up on the tables like no other dog I’ve seen before. When we finally arrive at the donation room, she is straight up onto the table awaiting her many hugs and treats from the blood bank nurse. Once all the fun is over Pearl is requested to give a small ‘PEARL’ (CH SONNET FOR MY FRIEND) sample of her blood which she does willingly. This is to Mum or Dad is there every step of the way and are ensure she can always give blood ensuring the health constantly giving her encouragement to stay nice and of all donors is paramount. Once her blood test has still. come back OK, she then normally receives another treat before the next part of the donation begins. Pearl is a fantastic donor and has made multiple full collections saving the lives of many dogs. Pearl then Her neck is then clipped, and an anaesthetic gel is receives more treats which she happily accepts. applied to numb the skin. She is given lots of cuddles from one of the blood bank team while the other blood The remainder of Pearl’s day is a bit of a lazy one bank team member is performing a surgical prep for as the Pet ICU recommend all donors refrain from the neck skin to ensure the sterility of the collection. participating in any physical activity for the next 24 hours. Pearl is now ready for the collection to begin. Her

PROCESSING Pearls blood donation then goes on for processing where it is spun down in the centrifuge to seperate the packed red blood cells (PRBC) from the plasma. It can store her PRBC for the next 35 days in a temperaturecontrolled fridge and her plasma is frozen and stored for up to 5 years. There are two main blood types that donors and recipients are tested for – they are DEA 1.1 Positive or DEA 1.1 Negative. Pearl is DEA 1.1 Negative which means she can donate to both positive and negative recipients. DEA 1.1 Positive donors can only donate to positive recipients. When looking for new donors there are a few things that Pet ICU look for to find our ideal donors. They are:

Healthy large breed dog.

Calm temperament, ideally being happy to lay on their side on the donation table.

Over 25 kg.

Between the ages of 1 and 8 years of age.

Up to date with vacc, heart worm prevention and worming.

At this stage the blood bank has just had an intake of potential new donors and are currently working through the screening process. The Pet ICU blood bank has saved many lives through the generosity and dedication of our donors and their families. They are so very proud of Pearl and are extremely grateful to Pearl, Peter and Wendy for being part of our program. We will be putting a call out for new donors later in the year!!! The following link is a video the Pet ICU made of Pearl donating blood. https://vimeo.com/524589110/908121ffe4

DO YOU HAVE A TALE TO TELL? Dogs Queensland is always on the look-out for interesting and amazing stories, like Pearl – the blood donor. If you have a canine story you’d like to see published in the Dog World magazine, email barbara@dogsqueensland.org.au.org.au

THIS SEASON IS A

Tick-ing Time Bomb!

– Republished with the kind permission of the Booval Pet Hospital 07 3282 6722

Ticks are most prevalent from Spring to Autumn however can occur at any time of year.

With over 70 tick cases and almost 20 snake cases treated at our Booval Vet Hospital in the past two months, it’s time for another reminder about the importance of tick prevention!

Paralysis Ticks are not particularly mobile, and rely on passing animals for a blood meal. The Paralysis Tick will crawl up the stems of grasses or along branches and ‘perch’ ready to latch on to a passing animal. Paralysis ticks will jump onto dogs and cats and then attach by burrowing their mouth-parts into the skin. They can attach anywhere even in the ears, on the lips or around the anus. However, they usually attach on the front half of the dog. They can have multiple ticks attached at once. Occasionally numerous tiny juvenile ticks can attach and cause a problem.

This season, we have had the largest amount of snake and tick cases through our doors and it has been one of the worst season we have ever seen. This influx is likely due to the mild winter, and the dry warm weather. If your dog is not yet on tick prevention, it’s a tick(ing) time bomb!

SO WHY ARE THESE LITTLE CREATURES SO DANGEROUS TO OUR DOGS? After attaching, the tick feeds on the host’s blood, injecting small amounts of saliva into the dog in the process. The tick’s saliva contains a toxin that causes the connection between the nerves and the muscles throughout the body in the dog to become disrupted. This causes weakness and ultimately paralysis. This is not just limited to the muscles involved in

Tick paralysis is a potentially devastating condition that can affect dogs and is caused by a parasite, the Paralysis Tick (Ixodes Holocyclus). The paralysis tick is usually found in a 20-kilometre wide band following the eastern coastline of Australia. The Paralysis Tick is most common in moist, humid coastal areas with abundant native animals that serve as hosts for the tick. Long grasses and bushland provide ideal environments for ticks, and if you live close to these areas, you and your dogs are at risk.

26

DOG WORLD October 2021

standing and walking, but also those inside such as those involved in breathing and swallowing, potentially causing serious compromise to breathing and pneumonia.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR A TICK TO CAUSE A PROBLEM? Tick paralysis symptoms will vary depending on the life stage and size of the paralysis tick, but usually signs and symptoms will appear after about 4 days of being attached. However there can be marked variation in the potency of the tick and also the individual dog susceptibility to tick paralysis, which may also vary from season to season.

• Common Signs of Tick Paralysis • Uncoordination • Weakness • Collapse • Vomiting or retching • Change of bark or meow • Difficulty breathing Because the tick toxin also causes weakness and dilation to the food pipe, affected dogs may retch and regurgitate their food, water or just frothy fluid. One serious complication of this is aspiration of fluid or food into the lungs which causes pneumonia. Affected dogs also may have difficulty swallowing which can cause fluid to build up in the mouth and throat which can make them choke. Tick paralysis also often causes difficulty breathing. If the paralysis becomes too advanced and the muscles involved

with breathing become too weak, the dog may not be able to breath sufficiently or at all. Tick paralysis is progressive and potentially fatal and you should seek Veterinary treatment immediately.

WHAT DOES A TICK LOOK LIKE? Paralysis ticks can be identified by their grey body and legs close to the head. Their legs are the feature which best distinguishes them from other ticks that occur in the same regions. Paralysis ticks have one pair of brown legs closest to their head, then two pairs of white legs and then one pair of brown legs closest to the body.

HOW CAN I PREVENT TICK PARALYSIS? Tick prevention is easily obtainable from any of our three Vet clinics and is a must during this time of year. There are products for dogs - we recommend Nexgard for dogs. It is also important to remember that no product is 100% effective and thorough tick searches daily should be undertaken on your pets. Clipping your dog’s coat short, especially during the tick season, makes performing tick searches much easier. It is vital to use tick prevention products exactly as directed and most importantly.

HOW TO PERFORM A TICK SEARCH To perform a tick search, work your fingers through your dog’s coat down to the skin and then systematically massage your fingers over the entire coat. You should concentrate on the dog’s front half, especially around the neck as this is where they are more likely to occur. Attached ticks are firmly attached and feel like a hard smooth round irregularity on the surface of the skin. Make sure you check the edge of the lips, in skin folds, between the toes and in the ears. If you think that you have found a tick, part the fur to have a closer look at it. Nipples, warts and other bumps on the skin are often mistaken for ticks and you should not attempt to remove them. Sometimes the tick has already become detached by the time that you are performing a search in which case you may only find a crater where a tick has been attached.

DOG WORLD October 2021

27

MY PET HAS A TICK, WHAT SHOULD I DO NOW? If you have found a tick, you should use a tick remover to detach it from the skin. You should not apply tick treatments, alcohol, mineral oil or petroleum jelly to the tick. Even once a paralysis tick has been removed it is possible for a dog that was previously unaffected to start to show signs of tick paralysis. Also dogs that are showing signs of

28

DOG WORLD October 2021

paralysis can deteriorate further even after the tick has been removed. If you suspect that your dog has tick paralysis you can reduce the risk of complications by withholding food and water before you can see a veterinarian. This is especially important if the dog regurgitating. If your pet is showing any signs of tick paralysis, you should take him/her to a Veterinarian for treatment promptly.
