The President’s Message The Queensland Dog World
President’s Message for July 2016 National Agility Titles Huge congratulations must go to our Queensland Agility Team for their recent win at the National Agility Titles, held in South Australia! The Queensland team, consisting of Rachel Bulloch, Jo Lewohl, Sonia Petrack, Simone Holt and Chris Bruce, competed not only against other Australian State teams, but also a team from our New Zealand neighbours. Congratulations to everyone involved in this truly brilliant victory! Border Collie Nationals The 4th Border Collie National was recently held at Durack, under some trying weather conditions. The event was an absolute success and boasted an entry of over 250 Border Collies in the Conformation Show and over 1,000 entries overall from all across Australia. Congratulations must go to the hard working Committee for their running of the event. The amount of work that goes into running a National should never be taken for granted and from all reports all those people who attended were very grateful for your dedication and hard work put in. EKKA – 2016 Brisbane Royal Show The Ekka is drawing closer by the day and I hope that our members will once again come out to support one of our top events on the Queensland show calendar. Our Magazine, PR and Marketing Committee have been working tirelessly to promote the event and put together another outstanding show bag, which will again be sold at the Dogs Queensland stand. The running of the stand during the Ekka is a massive job. If any members are able to volunteer some of their time to assist in the running of the stand, it would be greatly appreciated. Anyone interested can email there details to Helen Mackie at marketing@dogsqueensland.org.au or complete the Volunteer Form that has been forwarded to all members. Dogs Queensland Branded Vehicle and Trailer As many members would be aware, in 2015, Dogs Queensland purchased a trailer to be used for promotional purposes at public events. Over the last year, the trailer has been successfully utilised by many Clubs and has attracted widespread public interest at numerous events. A common problem, however, has been the transporting of the trailer. Dogs Queensland is proud to announce that it has recently purchased a second hand Ford Ranger, which has been branded and will also work as a promotional tool for our organisation. The vehicle will be used at Durack for deliveries to save on freight costs and will be available for any event organisers looking to help promote Dogs Queensland. For details on bookings of the vehicle and trailer, please contact the office.

RULE 216: Procedure for exhibits to enter the judging ring. a)
Judging will not commence until the Ring Steward has handed the class over to the Judge. After the Ring Steward has handed a class to the Judge to proceed with the judging, no other exhibit in that class shall be allowed to enter the judging ring. The belief that the steward cannot call a dog absent until the Judge has put his hands on the first dog is not correct. It is at the point when the Steward hands the class to the Judge (e.g. 'This is your Australian Bred class') that no other dog can enter the ring and those not present will be called absent.
b) An exhibit is not officially absent until the Ring Steward hands a class to the Judge to proceed with judging. Exhibitors should ensure that they have read the Rules and know their rights if they should be called absent. If a Steward calls you absent but has not yet handed the class to the Judge (as above), then you have the right to go in. If the Steward does not let you in, then ask that the judging stops and that the Show Manager comes to the ring to sort it out. Just remember that the Steward must hand the class to the Judge before calling an exhibit absent. c)
The Ring Steward only is to declare an exhibit absent, not the Assembly Steward. Again, contrary to some beliefs, it is only the Ring Steward who can call an exhibit absent and that the Ring Steward only need call the exhibit once (not 3 times, as many believe). It is not the job of the Ring or Assembly Steward to go looking for an exhibit. It is the exhibitor’s responsibility to be at the ring, ready and listening for their call. It is most likely that the exhibit number has been called as many as 5 times before entering the ring – just take time to listen to any Steward and you will hear them calling numbers several times in the process of getting classes ready to go in to the ring. So it helps the efficient running of the ring if you are there waiting (and not having a chat!). The Assembly Steward cannot call a dog absent. Their job is to get dogs ready for the Ring Steward and tell the Ring Steward which one(s) are not answering their call. The Ring Steward will then give the final call and declare those absent when he hands the class to the Judge to proceed with judging.

OFFICIAL ANKC LTD SURVEY
ATTENTION: ROTTWEILER OWNERS
This survey applies to any Member of a Canine Control affiliated with the ANKC Ltd and who has been an owner of a registered Rottweiler for at least twelve [12] months. In the interests of the breed, please read the survey carefully and reply by completing the “return slip” below and return to the ANKC Ltd Administrator, PO Box 309, Carina, QLD. 4152, or by email to: tbarry@ankc.org.au by COB 7 September, 2016. If sending via email, please clearly note in the Subject Heading “ROTTWEILER SURVEY”. Proposal ANKC Ltd is seeking the views of Rottweiler owners if they wish to introduce a Litter Registration Limitation (LRL) so that “Effective 1 February 2017 any dog born a Natural Bobtail will be eligible to be registered on the Limited Register only and flagged ‘NOT TO BE UPGRADED’”. Rationale The description for a Natural Bobtail Rottweiler is not found within our adopted standard (FCI Standard No: 147 dated 19/06/2000), which is the standard of the Country of Origin (Germany). The Allgemeiner Deutscher Rottweiler Klub (ADRK) views that the bobtailed dog is seen as deformed, meaning that it should not be shown and believe that due to the fact that the short tail is mostly hereditary, they should not be bred with (within Germany they would not pass the breed suitability test). As per the ANKC National Code of Ethics of Responsible Dog Ownership, members shall constantly strive to improve their knowledge of their chosen breed, and their knowledge of the requirements for the care, welfare and betterment of dogs. A member shall also breed primarily for the purpose of improving the quality and / or working ability of the breed in accordance with the breed standard, and not specifically for the pet or commercial market. Individuals that continuously and purposely breed for undesirable traits are not breeding to the standard or to improve the breed, instead these individuals are practicing unethical breeding.
OFFICIAL ANKC LTD ROTTWEILER SURVEY This section is to be returned to the ANKC Ltd Administrator, PO Box 309, Carina. QLD. 4152 or by email to: tbarry@ankc.org.au by COB 7 September, 2016. YOUR VOTE (Please cross out whichever is NOT applicable) I/We being a member of an ANKC Ltd Member Body and have owned a registered Rottweiler for at least twelve [12] months, request that ANKC Ltd introduce a Litter Registration Limitation (LRL) so that “Effective 1 February 2017 any Rottweiler born a Natural Bobtail will be eligible to be registered on the Limited Register only and flagged NOT TO BE UPGRADED”.

Library News The Queensland Queensland DogDog World World
There are rare occasions when only one breed is featured in the monthly 'Dog World' magazine – this is one of those times and the breed featured is the Golden Retriever. I can mention in this column that I only report on books that are available in the Durack Library. A quick check shows that we have several books on the 'Golden' so I will mention just a few that may be of interest to exhibitors, owners and breeders. 'The Golden Retriever' by Joan Tudor was first published in England by 'Popular Dogs Publishing Co Ltd' in 1966. The copy in the Library is the 5th edition published in 1974. This book contains history of the breed from 1900, chapters on conformation and temperament. The New Complete Golden Retriever by Gertrude Fischer is an American publication and was first published in 1984, more recent than the English book. This again has breed history and covers all areas, including the usefulness of the Golden as a shooting dog and sporting companion. 'All About the Golden Retriever' by Lucille Sawtell is, once again, not a new publication, having been first published on 1971. I have been informed that this book is currently 'out of print' but contains excellent illustrations of movement as well as breed standards. One other book, 'Golden Retrievers', in the Library by our very own Queenslander, Marilynn Morphet. I have profiled this book in monthly 'Book Review' to give a broader overview of the contents. Unfortunately, this book is not available to be borrowed, but can be researched in the Library. Please contact me if you would like access to the Library to peruse this or any other book.
I mentioned in this column some time back that in the Durack Library there is a glass cabinet which we purchased for use for anyone wishing to showcase breed memorabilia or Club Trophies. Sadly, this offer has not been taken up by anyone – so it sits there in a rather sad and empty state. If you have Club or personal memorabilia you really don’t have a place for, check this out. A reminder again that there are books that have been borrowed and not yet retruned. There a some books that I have members asking for that have not yet been returned. If the Library is not open, books can be left in the Clubhouse Function room or Show Secretary’s office, where they will most certainly be safe. Thank you for your support. Helen Acworth Librarian

Book Review The Queensland Dog World
Golden Retrievers Research into the First Century in the Show Ring By M. N. Morphet, BA (Uni of Qld) M.App.Sc (QUT) Reviewed by Helen Acworth Librarian I have been waiting some time for the opportunity to 'Showcase' this book. What a magnificent book! I can but imagine how much research has gone into this title. This is a huge volume compiled by Mrs Marilynn Morphet, well known Queensland breeder and exhibitor of Golden Retrievers. I would like to list every aspect of the contents but only have space here to cover some:• • • • • •
Hisory of the breed from 1865 The development of the breed around the world, decade by decade The change in Breed standards over time Discussions on Genetics, colour inheritance and hip dysplasia Results from Crufts, Club Specialities in Australia and New Zealand Outstanding Sires and Dams
The list is too long to include everything, but I am sure there is not an area that Marilynn has not covered. I would like to quote from one of the many critiques this book has received, this is from Muriel Iles and Julia Iles-Hebbert (Glenness Golden Retrievers UK):“With quiet determination and, over four years, research that has been careful and diligent, Marilynn has produced a unique record on the Golden Retriever. She weaves a rich tapestry of global stories and facts which will serve as a valuable and important reference to breeders, present and future. It is a work of dedication, effort, courage and love and is, truly, an heirloom for our lovely breed”. What more is to be said!

Queensland State Team Agility Nationals S. A. 2016
Queensland – National Agility Teams Event Winners 2016 Agility Nationals South Australia Supplied by Lisa Kaddatz, Team Queensland The Agility Nationals are held every 2 years and run over 5 days. It was South Australia’s turn this year to host the event and it was held at Wirrina Cove Holiday Resort near Normanville about 1 hour's drive South of Adelaide. here were a total of 628 dogs from around Australia and New Zealand entered and a total of 5,851 planned runs over the 5 day event, running in 8 rings. On the Tuesday, being the competitor check in day, the grounds were a picture, lush and green with the sun shining, rings, equipment and marquees all set up ready for the competition to commence the next day. Unfortunately, we awoke on Wednesday morning to find the weather had turned horrible, cold, wet and windy. The Teams event was the first event of the whole Nationals and was run in very wet and cold conditions on the Wednesday morning. There were 9 teams in total competing, representing each Australian State and Territory, as well as a team from New Zealand. All the teams run over an Agility course and then a Jumping course. The object being to go clear and fast as a fault or a DQ is added onto the team's overall result.

Bulloch, who has been on the State Team in 2014 with her Irish Terrier 'Saphie', although both Simone and Jo have represented Australia in Agility at the international level. Although 6 dogs form the Team, only 5 dogs run each course, with the best 4 results being counted each round. Jo and her 2 dogs, Luna and Mikki, were the first to run each time and set the team in good stead by going clear both times with great times. The rest of the girls followed Jo’s lead by putting in some equally cracking runs. We had to wait until the final presentations on the Sunday evening for the Teams results to be announced. We knew the result would be tight amongst some of the other States, who had similar results. As the results were being read out from last to first place, when the fourth placegetter team was announced, we knew Queensland was in the placings. NSW were then announced as placing third so the excitement in the team was building. Then the organisers mentioned that the top 2 teams were still tied after 3 attempts to decide the winner so when Victoria were announced as the

Rachel (who hails originally from the UK) said of the win for the Queensland team at the SA Nationals “this achievement means the world to me, in that I have been able to give back not only to the sport I love but make my adopted State proud”. After a short tour of inland Australia, visiting some key tourist spots like 'the dish' while enroute to Queensland, the shield will remain in Queensland until the 2018 Agility Nationals taking place in Victoria. The Golden Retriever & its History in Queensland Submitted by The Golden Retriever Club of Queensland, Compiled by MN Morphet BA. MAppSc. he Golden Retriever is a dog for all seasons and a dog for all reasons. It is beautiful, smart, athletic, gentle and kind. Whilst originally bred to be Gundogs, their intelligence supports a versatility which enables them to accommodate anything their masters’ desire, be it Obedience, Conformation, Working, Agility, assisting the blind and the deaf, therapy, search and rescue, drug detection and a myriad of other skills. Golden Retrievers have the ability to excel in one or many of these endeavours.
Overview As quoted in the Golden Retriever Breed Extension, the first impression of a Golden Retriever should convey that of an unexaggerated, medium sized, balanced, powerful and active Gundog.

The head and his kindly expression are key breed characteristics. Any unprovoked aggression or timidity to either humans or dogs, be it in the show ring or general community, is totally unacceptable and should be severely penalised. His neck is a key visual guide to overall balance. It flows smoothly into the dog’s correctly laid shoulders with no abrupt angles or dips. The Golden Retriever’s forelegs should be set well under the body. He is short coupled and deep through the heart. The topline appears absolutely level when standing or moving. Well bent stifles and a short distance between the hock and the ground will help create the desired movement. The feet of the Golden Retriever are cat like, with a correct slope of pastern for shock absorbency. The tail, which is heavily muscled at the base, is set level to the back and is a continuation of the spine, which enhances the level topline.

The Golden Retriever is overall a confident, effortless and methodical worker and not a racehorse. The coat is also a characteristic of the breed. A thick water resistant undercoat is essential and provides protection for the dog in all weather conditions and swimming, it should never hide the outline of the dog. A long silky setter-like coat is not typical of this breed. Finally, a Judge should be no way influenced by a personal preference of colour and always be mindful of colour allowance in the breed. Here is what the founder of the UK Golden Retriever Club, Mrs Charlesworth, had to say in 1932 “Breeders should concentrate on sound dogs fore and aft, good second thighs, strong hocks, good shoulders well laid back, long necks, powerful loins, short backs, broad heads and a strong foreface. Lucky is the breeder who gets one perfect specimen in a lifetime.”

UK, Australia and Europe, Retriever (Golden) Breed Standard A Breed Standard is the guideline which describes the ideal characteristics, temperament and appearance of a breed and ensures that the breed is fit for function. Absolute soundness is essential. Breeders and Judges should at all times be careful to avoid obvious conditions or exaggerations which would be detrimental in any way to the health, welfare or soundness of this breed. From time to time, certain conditions or exaggerations may be considered to have the potential to affect dogs in some breeds adversely and Judges and breeders are requested to refer to the Kennel Club website for details of any such current issues. If a feature or quality is desirable, it should only be present in the right measure. General Symmetrical, balanced, active, powerful, level mover; sound with kindly Appearance: expression. Characteristics: Biddable, intelligent and possessing natural working ability. Pictured above: Eng Ch + Ir Ch Cabus Cadet by Beauchasse Jason out of Brecklands Tamaris, bred by S. M. The History of the Golden Retriever We are most fortunate that there is a documented history of the Golden Retriever breed thanks to the tireless work of many, not least Mrs Elma Stonex, of Dorcas Kennels in the UK, who spent 10 years researching and then finally dispelling a myth that the Golden Retrievers came from Russian Circus Dogs. It was in 1864 that the foundation dog of the Golden Retriever breed was born. Dudley Coutts Marjoribanks (DCM), the first Lord Tweedmouth, was walking in a field in Brighton England and chanced upon a yellow wavy haired retriever and offered to buy it from its owner, a pedlar. Apparently, the pedlar had received it from a keeper of Lord Chichester in payment of a debt. DCM took the dog 'Nous' to his beautiful country estate “Guisachan in Scotland. The Golden Retriever fraternity is lucky that DCM kept accurate records of all his matings so we know that Nous was put to a now extinct Tweed Water Spaniel, which he had obtained from his cousin, David Robertson, who had lived on the Scottish borders in a village named Ladykirk. It was in 1868 that the first litter was born.

Continued from page 17 Puppies were named Primrose, Cowslip and Crocus. Lord Tweedmouth continued to record all his matings until 1890, a few years before his death. (The record book can be viewed at the Kennel Club in London). It is interesting to note that when the breed first began, all the dogs were jealously guarded by members of the aristocracy and landed gentry. They were never sold, only given away to close family and friends. It was in 1908 that the first Golden Retrievers were exhibited by Lord Lewis Harcourt. Mrs Charlesworth of the famous Noranby Kennel began a fledgling Club in the UK in 1911 but it was not until 1913 that The Golden Retriever Club was officially recognised by the Kennel Club.

I nt ro d u c t i o n o f G o l d e n Retrievers into Australia The first documented evidence of a Golden Retriever in Australia was in 1937 with the registration in Victoria of 'Grakle of Tone' bred by Miss F. Newton-Deakin of Dorset England. His owner was Miss Grice, who lived at Mt Macedon – the property was destroyed by bushfires in 1983. Also arriving at the same time was a bitch named Temeraire, who was to become the breed’s first Champion in Australia. At that time, there was cooperation with folk from New Zealand, who had introduced Golden Retrievers in 1925. In the early 1950's, Alexander of Arbrook and Krystina of Kuldana were imported into South Australia from England by Mrs Arnfield. Patroness, Mrs Elsie Dodd, was the first to bring Golden Retrievers into Queensland after emigrating from the UK in 1953. It is interesting to note that when she entered Ch Molyneux Gina Edwina (Imp UK) for the first time at the Brisbane Royal in 1954, her Golden Retriever was classified as AOV (Any Other Variety). Mrs Dodd refused to leave the ring until her beloved Golden Retrievers were classified as a separate breed. Mr Spencer from Harkaway in Victoria, imported from the UK in 1954 two very high quality Goldens, those being Boltby Comet and Halsham Hazel. These Goldens founded the famous Bonspiel Kennel. Highly respected All Breeds Judge from NSW, Mr Bob Philp, purchased two bitches from this mating – Bonspiel Goldgleam and Bonspiel Goldglint. Luckily, Goldglint was able to be mated to a lovely dog from England, Benedict of Goldconda, before he returned to that country with his school teacher owner. This combination produced Australia’s most famous Golden Retriever of all time, Ch Kyvalley Kyva, belonging to Bob Philp. Although Kyva was born in 1959, no other Golden has sired as many Champions since. As mentioned, Bob was greatly respected and is still affectionately referred to in this country
as 'Mr Golden Retriever'. In the 1960's, shortly after Kyva was born, Breed Clubs began to spring up around the world and Golden Retriever numbers spread rapidly.
The formation of the Golden Retriever Club of Queensland In August 1971, a group of 20 people, all sharing a common bond – the love of the Golden Retrievers – met to discuss the formation of a Club in Queensland. Application was made to the CCC (Qld) and permission to begin as a Social Club was granted. The first meeting has held on 9th September 1971, with 42 members present. After operating as a Social Club for three successful years, the Club became affiliated with the CCC in 1974 and later in 1996, became incorporated. The aim of the Club was to promote the welfare of the Breed and to improve the quality of all the aspects of the Golden Retriever. In those early times, there was little recognition of the breed, so one of the first aims was to promote public interest in Golden Retrievers. In this, again, the Club was hugely successful and numbers grew. The inaugural Parade was held on 28th September 1974 at Brookfield Showgrounds. There were 85 entries, which showed the strength and quality that was now in the breed. A surviving catalogue and the critique given by the Judge (Mr Peter Cousins) are reminders that some of the Goldens exhibited on that day went on to great successes. The first Championship Show was held on 27th July 1975, again at Brookfield, with Mrs M. Evans (Vanrose) from New Zealand officiating as Judge and an entry of 70. Again, the strength of the breed was evident, the progeny of the great sires and dams of the time proved their worth then and later and the breed became dominant in the show ring. Field Trials were organised and run successfully, although regretfully they eventually ceased and more emphasis was placed on Conformation Shows. Importantly, Obedience Trials are held in conjunction with the Confirmation Shows.

The 10th Anniversary Show was held in July 1985 with an entry of 150 Golden Retrievers, with Mrs Lucille Sawtell (Yeo Kennels) UK as Judge as testimony of the strength and development of the Club. The Club has a recovery service, which is devoted to finding new homes for those Golden Retrievers who may be in need of them and produces a monthly Newsletter, which keeps members informed of Club activities and which publishes articles of interest. At the first Golden Retriever Club of Queensland Championship Show in 1975 judged by Mrs Margaret Evans (Vanrose NZ) Ch Buffalo Woodbuff CD went BIS. Best Opposite was Ch Ferngold Gay Elizabeth

Continued from page 19 Mrs Hope Phillipson, foundation and Life Member, explains in her own words about these early days of the Golden Retriever Club of Qld. Clubs are formed for various reasons: competition, knowledge, social activities, etc. Looking back, I suspect that an underlying reason for our Queensland’s Golden Club’s existence in the beginning might just have been that the Golden owners wanted to indulge in their strong desire to enjoy the companionship of fellow admirers of their Golden Retrievers! There was a strong group of members from the Toowoomba area, led by Les Carlsson, Margaret Kirton, the Gourley family and others and this contingent was very important indeed to the progress of the Club. The first Christmas Party was held at our Brookfield home, with Santa visiting the group of adults and children on the one flat area of the property, though even then during one of the sack races, one member did come to grief with a damaged shoulder. John Ferguson, who was a very talented performer on the organ, decided he would entertain the gathering. Apart from these gatherings, the Shows were real meeting places, especially the country Shows. There were plenty of characters – humans as well as dogs. For example, there was a family known for arriving at the wrong venue or on the wrong day – they also had a Pointer who became known as the 'Black Golden'; his wins were listed among the Golden successes. Whilst Durack Showgrounds are in a class of their own, before they came about, the early Shows were held at our own choice of venue. This enabled us to have the entire area to ourselves, which was really especially enjoyable. Many people contributed to the success of the Club in its beginning and they were very happy times indeed. Enthusiasm was a strong force in gaining its reputation of being among the very best and friendliest

Clubs in the Queensland Dog World, an accolade recognised by the CCC. Sadly, many members have moved on and away from the Club and I am sure their loss is sincerely felt, though happily some are still valuable members and the members of today, I feel confident, are carrying on those early traditions of fellowship.

Mrs Wendy Atkins was awarded BOG with NZ and Sup Ch Dykinta Take a Chance, a bitch who had a wonderful show career. The most recent BIG at Brisbane Royal was Mrs L Fergusson’s Ch Chipala Dream Come True (AI), bred by the owner and Paula Goodall. A number of Goldens have also taken out Puppy in Group and one Puppy in Show. It is rewarding to note than a number of Golden Retriever Child Handlers have also done very well over the years at Queensland’s “Show for the People”. Names include Jodi Foulds, Anthea Adamopoulos, Danny Careless, Sherry Downs and Jeanne Chaplin. It was Jeanne’s late mother, Jean Stephens, who worked tirelessly for almost 30 years single-handedly looking after the Golden Retriever Club of Queensland’s Recovery Service.
Brisbane Royal In 1976, Ch Briden Leola, bred by D Hutcheson and owned by local couple, J and G Ferguson, took out Best Opposite Sex in Show at Brisbane Royal. The following year was also successful for the Fergusons when their Ch Santamaria Gonzales bred by R Feast took out BIG at Sydney Royal and followed it up with BOG at Brisbane Royal. 1981 saw Ch Leoline Golden Comet, bred by Mrs V Reid and owned by Mr and Mrs Thornton, retire after taking out BIG at Brisbane Royal, thus ending an outstanding Show career. In 1991, Mrs and Mrs McKittrick’s homebred Ch Coombehill Brae Roshen, took out BOG at Brisbane Royal and in the following year, Golden success continued when local Queensland breeder, Mrs Yvonne Dunn, took out Best Opposite Sex

The bitch at the top of the table is Ch Andalee Lady Celeste, a dam of 14 Champions. Celeste was bred by Mrs Lederer and owned by the influential Mrs Violet Reid of Leoline Kennels. The picture below shows Celeste with her first litter of winners.

In 2014, the Golden Retriever Club of Qld celebrated its Ruby Anniversary by having two Shows with International Judges. The second Show was in honour of the late Mrs Bonnie Stewart, Life Member and tireless worker in the early years of the Club. Australia has been extremely fortunate that many high quality Golden Retrievers and latterly, semen, that have been imported over the years. This has ensured the breed’s high standard since its introduction all those years ago. Through much dedication, there has been a contribution of blood from many countries throughout the world. It is hoped that with our clever breeders, being mindful of the Breed’s hallmarks and our Goldens’ health, the hybrid vigour will help to maintain the high standard of this wonderful breed for the next 70 years and beyond.

Zone 2 Showcase The Queensland Dog World
Zone 2 Dog World Column – July 2016 ell, here we are, approaching the middle of the year already. This becomes a very busy time in the regional areas as the milder weather (we hope) is upon us and there are a lot of events scheduled during this time.
EKKA By now, the entries are probably closed and here is hoping that we have a big entry for this major event being held in August.
What’s On in Zone 2 in July?
Dogs Queensland has put a fantastic show bag together for this event and it is accessible to regional members – even those who are unable to make it to the EKKA. If you would like to purchase one (they are only $20 each), please contact me at craig.pettett1@bigpond.com and we can make arrangements.
In June, Zone 2 members have a choice of several events to participate in, including:
I will be attending the EKKA on the Dogs Queensland stand so transport back to regional areas can be arranged.
•
Members would have also hopefully seen an email sent out early in June advising that under the terms of our permit with Brisbane City Council, Dogs Queensland can offer camping at the Durack Grounds throughout the EKKA period. It is hoped that this will encourage more members to attend and make it easier for those members attending.

Rules in Action – Rule 226 All of us hope that we are never in the situation where we are called absent at a Show, but there are a lot of misconceptions about what happens in this situation with many exhibitors having differing views on what the rules are. It is very important that exhibitors understand the rules and the procedure around an absent exhibitor and bringing exhibits into the ring for judging.
Rule 226 states: All eligible exhibits shall be brought before the Judge for adjudication for class or special prizes/trophy or challenge certificate, as the case may be, immediately the relative class is called by the Ring Steward, and an exhibit not so produced shall be deemed to be absent. The Committee of any body holding an exhibition under these Rules shall accept no responsibility with reference to eligible competitors being brought before the Judge, and it is necessary that an exhibitor make his/her own arrangements for the exhibit to be taken into the ring. Under no circumstances must judging be delayed owing to a handler not being available. As the exhibitor is responsible for producing their exhibit, it is very important that they are aware of what is happening in their ring, ready to go in when required and also ready to manage any issues.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
Zone 2 Showcase The Queensland Dog World
Some tips to help exhibitors include: 1. Always watch the ring and be aware of what is happening 2. Always answer when your number (or multiple numbers) is called – if you can’t hear the Steward or you are not sure they’ve heard you, it is a great idea to go up to them and advise them of your numbers and that you are there 3. Inform the Steward if you need to swap dogs between classes – this allows the Steward to know that you are there but when they are assembling the next class, you are busy in the ring 4. If there are any problems, through the Ring Steward, ask for the Show Manager immediately – they are the senior official at the Show and are there to address issues 5. Please do not put Show Workers in an uncomfortable position by asking them to delay judging to accommodate your requirements between multiple rings – unfortunately, if there is a clash, you will have to manage it By taking a proactive approach, we can try to minimise the potential for any issues. Whilst there may be some exceptions, there are very few Show Officials who would take enjoyment out of calling an exhibit absent so by being prepared and communicating effectively, this shouldn’t be a problem.
Huge congratulations to Jacqui Connolly, Heidi Crane, Debbie Appleby and all the Committee and Club members who have worked so hard to get the Club up and running again. Thank you also to the three Judges, Mr Ken Iggleden, Mrs Norma Zimmerle and Mrs Georgina Byrne (WA), who made it a really pleasant weekend for all exhibitors and were lots of fun. Members should seriously consider putting the Club’s Shows on their calendar, even if it does involve a bit of travel as it’s definitely worth the trip to enjoy some North Queensland hospitality at one of the best dog-showing venues in Queensland at the Proserpine Showgrounds. Once again – well done all and a big thank you to the exhibitors for their support and to the volunteers who Stewarded, Wrote or helped out in any way over the weekend.
Submissions Submissions for the column of news or photos are always welcome. Please feel free to send to me at: craig.pettett1@bigpond.com Until next time
Upcoming Date Claimers We have some great events being presented by Clubs as we move towards the middle and latter parts of the year, so keep your eyes open for these great date claimers: • • •
Rockhampton Kennel Club Triple Header 20th and 21st August (Rockhampton) with two International Judges from Japan and Taiwan; Callide Classic 15th October (Gladstone); and Zone 2 Amenities Triple Header (Bundaberg) 5 th and 6th November
Congratulations – Proserpine Whitsunday Obedience and Kennel Club Whilst not in Zone 2, the Proserpine Club is close enough, just falling outside the Zone 2 norther boundary. On the weekend of 4th and 5th June, the Club held their first Shows in 12 months as they are going through a rebuilding phase. And these Shows were a huge success, with good entries and were enjoyed by exhibitors.

THREE
REASONS
WHY YOUR DOG ISN’T RESPONDING:
PART 2 SUPPLIED BY ERIC BRAD
n part 1 of this series on why your dog doesn’t respond when you give him a cue, we looked at the reasons and circumstances that can cause a dog not to recognise a cue. We determined the dog simply may not have seen or heard the cue for a variety of reasons, to which we need to be sensitive. It’s important to remember that while your dog is not a human, he does have an inner life and is engaged in his world. As his guardian and partner in life, dog owners owe it to their dogs to help them be as successful as they can. In this instalment, we will look at the second reason your dog doesn’t respond to your cues: The dog doesn’t know what the cue means. Frequently, you might teach your dog a behaviour like 'Sit' or 'Down.' You will rehearse the behaviour over and over. After a time, you start to see your dog showing recognition of what you’re asking for — and responding correctly to it most of the time. This is the time that many owners smile a satisfied smile and tell themselves "Now he’s got it!" They assume the dog understands what’s being asked and can perform it reliably in all circumstances. But it’s not quite that simple. When you teach your dog a behaviour, it can be easy to assume that the dog has learned exactly what you think you have taught him. But you don’t control what the dog learns. The best you can hope for is to strongly influence what your dog will learn through
28 - July 2016
good, clear training techniques. But sometimes your dog will only understand enough of what you are asking to do the behaviour correctly in particular situations or under certain conditions. Keep in mind that dogs do not generalise well; they don’t relate something easily to variations in the environment or circumstances. They are very literal creatures. If you teach your dog to 'Sit' at home, in your living room on the carpet, he may very well assume that he is to 'Sit' on cue only in the living room on the carpet! It takes additional training in a variety of circumstances to help the dog understand that 'Sit' means 'Sit' no matter where you are. Slight variations like asking your dog to sit on the dog path in the park instead of the carpet at home may seem to him like a completely new and different thing than the original behaviour you taught. So when you give that cue to 'Sit', your dog may look around, confused, because he isn’t at home and he’s not on a carpet.
Good training makes for good responses In order for your dog to truly 'get it', you may have to practice the same behaviour in many of the situations your dog will encounter out in the real world. Some trainers call this process 'proofing.' It helps the dog understand that the cue means to perform the same behaviour no matter what the circumstances. Depending on the dog, the behaviour and the trainer’s skills, it could take more or less variety to help the dog generalise the behaviour.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
Member Insight The Queensland Dog World
A part of good 'proofing' is knowing clearly and precisely what you expect from your dog. For example, you want your dog to 'Stay' but do you want him to 'Stay' from a 'Sit' or a 'Down' or just standing up? Do you want him to stay even if you walk away from him? Even if another person or dog is present? Even if you only use a hand signal or only a verbal cue? The point is, you need to be clear in defining what your criteria for a behaviour like 'stay' are by being as complete as you can regarding all of the conditions under which you expect the correct response. Then take the time to train that correct response under those different conditions before expecting your dog to just perform the behaviour because he seemed to 'get it' at home in the living room.
It’s important to remember that while your dog is not a human, he does have an inner life and is engaged in his world. As his guardian and partner in life, dog owners owe it to their dogs to help them be as successful as they can. Finally, it’s important to help your dog succeed in these new environments. Each time you move to a new environment or find yourself in a new situation that needs training, be sure to make it easy for your dog to respond correctly. Be extra careful to make the cue obvious. Help your dog out with some of the prompting you used when you originally trained the behaviour if necessary. Keep in mind that your dog is just trying his best to understand and that being successful makes learning fun. With repeated success in new situations, your dog will eventually come to generalise the behaviour and their response will improve.
Our greatest responsibility is helping your dog by teaching him what he needs to be successful in our human world. Teaching behaviours is the beginning but practice is important. Practice in all of your life situations is even better. Remember that every new situation is a training opportunity. Solid training makes for great responses. In Part 3 of this series, we will look at one more reason why your dog might not be responding. We will explore whether or not it’s worth it for your dog to do the behaviour you are asking for. In the meantime, make use of all those great training opportunities in your daily life and find lots of chances to let your dog succeed anywhere and any time. A smarter dog is a happier dog. Great Expectations If you know that your dog heard/saw the cue and didn’t respond properly, you need to look at whether or not the dog was trained for the situation you’re in and understood what was expected of him. Is it possible that you just haven’t trained for that particular criteria or situation? Is your dog looking a bit lost and confused and not just distracted? Then maybe you need to go back and do some more work on that behaviour to help your dog succeed. Keeping a clear perspective on what you can reasonably expect of your dog, given the variety of situations you will take him into can help immensely.

Trials are held in the Bundaberg district three times a year. Visitors are always welcome to attend and witness the level of skill and tenacity these gundogs and their handlers show as they work as a team with whistle, hand and voice commands to retrieve both sighted and unsighted retrieves. Watching the fun these well trained dogs have doing what they were bred for is a real joy.

Hervey Bay Dog Obedience & Agility Club s you can see by our name, we focus on training and competing in Obedience and Agility. We are completely run by volunteers, who teach almost every day of the week. Our Club offers beginner, intermediate and advanced classes in Obedience, the same in Agility as well as a socialisation and fun and games class. Over the last 5 years, numbers on our beginner Obedience courses have more than doubled and last year we started 2 classes a week instead of 1. The increase shows both the success of our Club and the desire by the public to become more responsible owners. The more they can see what fun can be had with a well trained dog, the more likely it is that they will go down the Obedience and Agility competition route. All our members are encouraged to 'have a go' with competing. We hold 4 Agility Trials, 2 Obedience Trials and 5 in-house Trials a year. The Club has 2 trophies that members can work towards throughout the year - gaining points for training, competing and Club volunteering so whatever their level, everyone has a chance. This year, our Club has invested in a complete second set of Agility equipment to allow us to run 2 rings at our Agility Trials. In our May Trials just gone, this was a huge success, with 840 entries from across regional South-East Queensland, a smoothly running Trial and everything finishing on time! With increasing numbers moving into our Club's intermediate and advanced Agility classes (and hopefully the same in other regional Clubs), the number of trial entries should continue to grow and the future looks good for our Club and dog sports in general.
