Breeder Alert –
Dogs Queensland has become increasingly aware of Puppy Scam Websites using legitimate Dogs Queensland Registration and Queensland Breeder Identification (BIN) Numbers to sell puppies. Dogs Queensland Registration Numbers are obtained from legitimate websites such as Dogs Queensland or DogzOnline, where they are displayed as required by the Queensland Government.

Puppy Scam Websites
Please see the Queensland Dog Breeder Fact Sheets for regulations and guidelines for Queensland Dog Breeders.
An example of a typical scam is: • A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet. • The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix. • A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry. • Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published. • No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website. • The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures. • The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.
As a breeder what can you do to avoid being an unknowing victim of a Puppy Scam: •
Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix.
• Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate. • Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct in person contact with you. •
Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details.
•
Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.
As a buyer what can you do to avoid being a victim of a Puppy Scam: •
Verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland.
•
Ensure communications are made to verified contact details.
•
Meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.
•
If paying online, use a credit card or PayPal where you have a degree of buyer protection.
•
Check website is an established site with a website security certificate.
•
Avoid websites without physical address or phone numbers.
•
Ask for proof, including ANKC registration papers and veterinary health records for any puppy.
Importantly you should report any suspect sites or advertising to the ACCC ScamWatch website. Please let us know about any suspect websites too by contacting Dogs Queensland on 3252 2661 or by email at info@dogsqueensland.org.au.

President’s Message
“
W
elcome to 2024!!! I hope everyone had an enjoyable Christmas.
Sadly for many, their Christmas was brought to an unpleasant ending with horrific storms in South East Queensland. This storm has been identified as a tornado!!! Many of our members suffered loss and Dogs Queensland will be assisting with a small financial grant to members who require assistance (see following link). Online Member Assistance Application This follows on from the dreadful flooding events in Far North Queensland following Cyclone Jasper. Most recently Cyclone Kirrily has affected Far North and inland Queensland!! I hope everyone has come out of these dreadful weather events without serious damage or injury. One thing we find when events like this occur, is how our members pull together to help their fellow canine enthusiasts. This is something we can all be proud of and grateful for in times of need. The Dog of the Year Final was a brilliant event and a great way to end the year on a high. Huge congratulations to all those who qualified and to the winner, the beautiful Afghan Hound SUPREME CH SULIMAN DEFINNITELY AI JC – Sephora owned by Dawn Ashton and her breeders Kerin and Rachel Hutchins and lovingly handled by Jodie Hatzikiriakos. The runner up was the German Shepherd Dog Multi BIS C.I.B. Ch., AAO Ch. and Australian SUPREME Champion Karham Know It All HT – KIAH. KIAH is owned and bred by Michelle and Nicole Hammond and was expertly handled on the night by Nicole. Lovely to see both these talented dogs have also achieved titles in the dog sport arena!! Katrina Santas and the members of the Marketing and Public Relations committee worked hard to put together and run this prestigious event. Our thanks also go to the judges and workers on the night. Generous sponsorship added to the amazing prizes on offer. We can look forward to bigger and better things in 2024.
Our Ground Committee have been working hard to identify areas needing upgrades and maintenance of our Durack grounds. The upgrade of rings 1-10 was outsourced to a professional company. With the unfortunate weather events, it has significantly delayed the completion of the main ring area. This will allow time for all necessary seeding and mowing to bring the area back to pristine condition. Whilst this delay is disappointing for everyone, it was necessary to undertake this remedial work which was long overdue. I’d like to thank members for their patience and understanding in connection with this. I’d also like to acknowledge our Ground staff for the huge and difficult task of preparing the grounds over the past weeks. The conditions have been horrendous, yet Rion and his crew got the job done!!! THANK YOU!!! Living in Queensland brings us extremes in weather. We have seen this in recent months. Clubs and committees do their best to provide safe events within reasonable policy guidelines. It is up to each individual to determine if the scheduled event is safe for them and their dogs. Committees plan well in advance expending thousands of dollars at times, to bring you events. Keep in mind that all of those involved in running these events are volunteers. So, please be reasonable and thoughtful with your expectations and comments, particularly on social media. A very small percentage of our members volunteer their time to run these events and we owe them our gratitude. Without these volunteers, there would be no events. As we move into February, let’s hope for better weather!! Stay safe and continue to enjoy your Passion.

Board Notes – February 2024 DOGS QUEENSLAND 2023/2024 CYCLONE, STORM AND FLOOD ASSISTANCE Late last year Cyclone Jasper crossed the coast in Far North Queensland causing widespread damage. A number of our members also sustained serious property damage from the winds, rain or floods in the SE Qld region. Whilst insurance cover may eventually go some way towards replacing the essential items, we also realise (as dog enthusiasts) that the need for immediate access to funds to ensure that our members’ dogs are kept safe and in good order becomes absolutely critical. The cost of temporary boarding, feeding, replacement of secure fencing/ kennel runs, Veterinary care and transport are all very real expenses confronting our members across the State. We invite our members who have been directly affected by this tragic event to apply for immediate financial assistance using the previously established Dogs Queensland Disaster Fund. Please use the attached Dogs Queensland application form to submit your request for assistance and it will be processed as a priority. At this worrying time, please accept the warmest wishes from your fellow dog world enthusiasts right across Australia, Interstate and Overseas. DOG WORLD February 2024
– Jamie Fast
My hounds are bred out of the Spartan kind, So flewed, so sanded, and their heads are hung With ears that sweep away the morning dew, Crook-kneed, and dew-lapped like Thessalian bulls, Slow in pursuit, but matched in mouth like bells, Each under each. A cry more tuneable Was never holla’d to nor cheered with horn. A Midsummer Night’s Dream Act 4, Scene 1 – William Shakespeare For many years, it has been thought these lines from Shakespeare referred to the Basset Hound. Whether true or not these words fit the breed and, if there is no contest, they are a welcome addition to the breed’s heritage. HERITAGE To quote the late Margaret S Walton (Peg) (Lyn Mar Acres Kennel) who knew and understood more about Basset Hounds than most ever will, said “To truly understand any breed, one should always go back to the origin and come forward, exploring every step of the way.” The Basset Hound is generally accepted to have originated in sixth-century France; a country known for its many breeds of hound. Most strains had a tall version as well as a short-legged size under sixteen inches, which were all called basset (bas in French means low-set). Both the Basset Hound and its long-legged cousin the Bloodhound are thought to be descendants of the legendary St Hubert hound. St Hubert was a churchman and patron saint of the hunt. Legend says he set out to develop a new strain of hound and that these hounds had long, pendulous ears, deep lips, broad mouths and smooth coats.
The Basset Hound, comparatively speaking, was a modern introduction to the United Kingdom (UK) from France. The Basset Hound as we now know it today, commenced its development in the UK in the 1850’s. Their first appearance at an English Show was in 1875. Pre 1950 In Europe and the UK, the numbers of Basset Hounds declined substantially over the first half of the 20th Century. When the Second World War started in 1939, most of the Basset Hound packs in the UK were disbanded and only two packs survived the war. There were so few Basset Hound breeders in the UK following WW2 and bloodlines so pure that new outcross blood stock (Basset Artesian-Normand) was imported from France in 1949 by Miss Keevil (Grims Kennel). Thankfully, Basset Hound numbers were not as affected in the United States of America (USA) as in the UK and Europe. In 1957, it was decided by the Basset Hound Club of England that an outcross stallion hound was much needed and Lyn Mar Acres Dauntless was imported from the USA to help reinvigorate the English bloodlines. Despite the hardship of war, subsequent social upheaval and changing public opinion on hare hunting, there are still working basset packs in the UK and Europe. The history of the Basset Hound in the USA dates to a surprisingly early period. It is commonly believed that George Washington’s diary shows that his friend, Marquis de Lafayette sent Basset Hounds to the USA after the French Revolution. In 1884, Westminster Kennel Club made a class for the Basset Hound. Ch Nemours won Best of
Many authorities feel the Basset Hound was a result of a mutation in the St Hubert strain. This genetic deviation produced a short-legged, dwarfed hound, whose slower movement and low-set form was to prove useful for hunters, on foot, in search of small game. With long ears helping to stir up the scent, packs of Bassets were used to drive small prey, such as rabbit and hare, from dense undercover into open terrain for the hunters to access.

much favour when first imported into Australia around 1893. The breed was nearly extinct in Australia until 1957 when two bitches (both in whelp) and one dog were imported from the UK by John McInolty and Harold Spira. By 1964, it was estimated that nearly 200 Basset Hounds were being exhibited in Australia and that the total population exceeded 1,000.
Breed and the Basset Hound made its debut to the American public, just one year after the Basset Hound Club of England had been formed. The first Basset Hounds were registered with the American Kennel Club in 1885, a dog and bitch named Bouncer and Countess. Significantly for the breed in the USA, Time magazine’s February 1928 edition featured a Basset Hound puppy on its cover. It was the youngest creature ever to appear on its cover up to that time and helped bring the breed to the attention of the American public. Fanciers began to take a keener interest in serious breeding and 1936 saw the formation of the Basset Hound Club of America. The USA became smitten with the Basset Hound. Post 1950’s From the 1950’s onwards, the world fell in love with the Basset Hound. We can’t forget that Elvis Presley sang “Hound Dog” to a Basset Hound named “Sherlock” on The Steve Allen Show on 1 July, 1956. We watched “Flash” the fictional Basset Hound owned by Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane on the television series, “The Dukes of Hazzard.” “Fred Basset” has been a regular feature in a syndicated cartoon strip in newspapers since 1963. Then there’s another “Fred” who appeared in the Smokey and the Bandit movies as the companion to Cledus. Basset Hounds still advertise Hush Puppy slippers and shoes. Breed numbers worldwide have been influenced by music, movies, television and advertising. Australia was not immune to this worldwide fascination. The breed unfortunately failed to find

WHAT IS A BASSET HOUND? by Mercedes Braun Technically, he is a long, low dog of the scent-hound category, known for his pensive expression and easy-going manner. He was originally bred to hunt small game. However, it is the Basset’s versatility that brought him fame. He is best known for the lovable nature which led him to be dubbed “the armchair clown”. Do not be fooled when you see him sound asleep on his back or sprawled on his favourite chair (which he has taken away from you). Put a lead on this same dog, take him to a show, and he can give a polished performance with a “Don’t you love me, Mr Judge?” attitude that will command applause from the ringside. Take him to the field, and he can show you how a scent-hound should perform – over, under and through rough ground, never tiring all day. At home the Basset will assume his subtle manner of “ruling the roost”. By devious methods, he refuses to accept the fact that he is a dog. He can affect poor hearing when he doesn’t want to obey or pretend to sleep so soundly that you do not have the heart to disturb him. But his alertness miraculously returns if you open the refrigerator door ever so quietly. A Basset needs firm convincing that his big, brown eyes will get him nowhere. But you must first convince yourself of this if you can. He is smart enough to be very adept at playing dumb. He will do his best to outmanoeuvre you to gain his own way, and he will make you like it. You need only one Basset to fill the house with laughter or woods with beautiful music, and the show with an approving ovation. Small wonder the breed is loved by so many. Owners readily admit, “I am owned by a Basset”.

Generally black, white and tan (tri-colour); lemon and white (bi-colour); but any recognised hound colour is acceptable. No Minimal. Whole outline should be clean and free from feathering. Tail tip and feet may need a little tidy up. Basset Hounds shed, so a regular bath, and a brush and polish with a hound glove a couple of times a week is essential. Nails clipped and ear canals cleaned on a weekly basis. No Yes Yes. The Basset Hound possesses a strong pack instinct. The family will become their pack. They need to be with their pack. It is important to teach them their place in the “family pack”. Yes. However, as with any dog, young children should never be left unsupervised with a Basset Hound. This dog is not one to be left in the backyard, alone, day in and day out. As a pack hound, it wants to be with you. If you are home, it wants to be with you. It doesn’t like to be alone. This is a dog that thrives with another canine companion in the house. Yes. A fully fenced backyard with strong gates is essential. Gates with self-closing hinges are even better. Being a scent hound, the aromas on the other side of the gate are always better than those in the backyard. They will just follow their nose out the gate and away. Once their nose is on a scent, they lose all awareness and sense. Basset Hounds have no road awareness. Always shut the gate!! Essential. There is nothing worse than a totally unruly, uncontrollable, spoilt Basset. Remember that as these dogs mature, they need both firm and consistent training to learn acceptable manners. Don't let your Basset Hound rule the roost!

TRAINING AND COMPETITION The Basset Hound is tenacious and of ancient lineage. It hunts by scent, possesses a pack instinct and a deep, melodious voice. Understanding these characteristics is key to living, training and competing with a Basset Hound. Literature often describes the Basset Hound as stubborn and difficult to train. The Basset Hound is a very sensitive breed. They will not tolerate rough handling or forceful training. The best rule of thumb for training this breed is – If what you are doing is helping your hound to learn a particular exercise and the dog is enjoying it, then you have hit upon the right method. Listen to your dog. This will probably mean learning to be very inventive in your training methods and changing your methods from time to time. If your Basset Hound starts to slow down and show resistance to working, this usually means that the dog has either become bored or has something better to do. Obedience has been around for a long time and Basset Hounds have been right there with other breeds. Many people have found training methods that work for them. However, it is said that with
14
DOG WORLD February 2024
Basset Hounds, you really must love the sport of Obedience because you only spend a few minutes in the ring at shows, compared to the many hours spent training for those few minutes. Agility is great fun watching all breeds climbing up and over the A frame, using the see-saw, crawling through the tunnel and weaving in and out of the line of brightly painted dowels. To find a Basset Hound who is willing (and able) to do these things in competition is rare, but it can be done. You can find some great videos of Basset Hounds competing in Agility on YouTube. Tracking is one of the most satisfying activities in which a Basset Hound owner can participate. The close bond that develops between the hound (doing exactly what it was bred for) and handler through the communication of a long leash in the field is unparalleled. If you decide your Basset Hound has a future in the show ring, start lead training first. Keep the sessions short and fun. Meanwhile, start practicing show posing. If any phase of Basset Hound show training sends people crazy, this is it. You need five hands at least to manage the front, rear, head, tail,
sagging middle, sitting and the rear-leg-one-stepforward trick. If you can, use a low table with a non-slip surface. It will save your back and prepare the hound for the show ramp. Before long, your hound will be giving a polished performance and commanding applause from the ringside. There are clubs affiliated with Dogs Queensland that assist with training in all competition disciplines. HEALTH – REGULAR CARE Feet Basset Hounds were originally bred to cover very hard and rough terrain whilst hunting and therefore have large feet with very strong nails. Today’s Bassets are not generally required to do this sort of work and require their nails to be clipped to maintain the nail and shape of their feet, keeping the pastern strong. Ears Basset Hounds have long, pendulous ears that generally do not let air circulate in the ear canal. The Basset’s ears should be checked weekly (particularly in humid weather) and excess wax
cleaned out as a preventative for ear infections. Eyes Check your Basset Hound’s eyes regularly for foreign particles that might get lodged in the lower eyelid after playing in long grass (eg. grass seeds) or in dusty weather etc. Simply wash the eye out with a little saline solution. Walking and Exercising Basset Hounds are a heavy boned hound that will grow quickly in their first year. When Basset Hound puppies are very young, excessive rough play or long walks can put too much pressure on their growing frame. In particular, a puppy’s front legs are susceptible to growth plate damage and this could result in unsoundness in the legs as they grow into adulthood. Heavy impact activity like jumping off furniture should be avoided. Gentle play only for the first six months, then only very short walks after that. Gradually introduce longer walks over time. At twelve months your Basset Hound puppy will be looking forward to its regular walk. Don’t forget that the adult Basset Hound was bred to walk all day beside his human whilst hunting

in rough terrain. Your adult dog should be kept fit with regular exercise and walks. Walking also allows the Basset Hound to exercise their sense of smell. Using their nose whilst out walking allows a Basset Hound to catch up on all the local canine news; to them it is like reading the newspaper and relieves the boredom of the backyard. Don’t be tempted to let your Basset off the lead in an unfenced area – if they catch an interesting scent, it is likely they will be unwilling to come back when called. Feeding The Basset Hound is a deep-chested hound and an enthusiastic eater which can predispose them to bloat. Bloat is the dilatation and torsion of the stomach. The initial symptoms are a marked distension of the abdomen, unproductive attempts to vomit, obvious pain and distress. To manage the risk of bloat, an adult Basset Hound should be fed two smaller meals a day (AM/PM), rather than one large meal. HEALTH CONDITIONS Basset Hounds generally are a sound breed. Bloat and growth plate damage in puppies have been discussed above because they are conditions that can be minimised with day to day management. Other conditions known to impact the breed include ectropian (excessive drooping of the lower eyelids), entropian (inversion of the eyelids) and glaucoma. Basset Hounds can be susceptible to platelet dysfunction such as Basset Hound thrombopathia and Von Willebrand’s disease – both bleeding disorders; and epilepsy disorders such as Laforas disease.

Veterinary Specialist Ophthalmological examination is available for diagnosis of eye health conditions such as glaucoma, and other eye defects. Additionally, a Breed Specific DNA health test is available for primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and Breed specific DNA testing for platelet dysfunction (Basset Hound thrombopathia and Von Willebrand’s disease) and Laforas disease. It is crucial that when purchasing a Basset Hound, you do so from a reputable and registered breeder. CONCLUSION If you have decided that the Basset Hound is for you or want more information, you are encouraged to contact the Basset Hound Club of Queensland, or Dogs Queensland. Our club members are happy to chat to you and answer your queries. Take the time to visit a dog show where you can see the breed and speak to breeders. In this way you will gain a better perspective about Basset Hounds and if it’s a breed that suits you. – Courtney Stevens Dogs of all ages need interesting environments to promote behavioural and physical wellness. Goals of enrichment: • Reducing abnormal behaviour • Increasing healthy behaviours • Increasing positive interactions with the environment • Increase the dog’s ability to cope with challenges
The Queensland Animal Welfare Standards And Guidelines For Breeding Dogs And Their Progeny require dogs to receive a variety of enrichment to ensure their physical, cognitive and psychological well-being. Choose activities that encourage play, searching, chewing and being social with other dogs. Here are some suggestions to create your Enrichment Program:
PHYSICAL ENRICHMENT – encourage engagement with the dogs enviroment and enhance natural behaviours. Try: • creating new spaces for exercise and play. • adding physical features to exercise yards, kennels and runs such as raised platforms, ramps, tunnels, digging pits or water pools. • Add different substrate to areas eg. AstroTurf, sand and foam matting.

Do you have an Enrichment Program?
OCCUPATIONAL ENRICHMENT – encourage physical and mental stimulation by giving dogs a ‘Job’. Examples include: • Obedience Training using positive reinforcement techniques. • Playing dogs sports such as Agility, Flyball, Lure Coursing or Earthdog. • Providing toys that require the dog to work for the treat.
FEEDING ENRICHMENT – increase natural feeding behviours. Examples: • Using snuffle mats and puzzle feeders. • Freezing food in ice blocks for hot days. • Hiding food in different places to increase activity • Providing safe and age appropriate chews and treats
SENSORY ENRICHMENT – creating noises or smells to calm or stimulate a dogs senses. Some examples are: • Play music in the kennels. • Adding a herb garden to your exercise area (using pet safe plants). • Place scented items in PVC pipes with holes for investigating.
SOCIAL ENRICHMENT – means opportunities to interact with other dogs, humans or other compatible animals. Social enrichment includes: • Supervised play with other dogs. • Group housing. • Outdoor walks, play, and patting. (Social enrichment is not the same as Socialisation)

DOG TALES
Shep The Rough Collie – Julie Finn Peter bent and ran his hand under Annie’s belly – she was due to give birth the following week. He vaguely wondered how many pups she would have and made a mental note that he would have to put together the whelping box the next morning. Annie had shown no signs of ‘nesting’ (the precursor before giving birth). She had not been digging holes or ripping up her bedding. Although this would be Annie’s first litter Peter felt confident she would not be having puppies until her due date. He was looking forward to seeing the pups as he had mated her to Blue, his big blue merle Rough Collie. Both dogs had wonderful temperaments and Blue was a stunning looking dog. They also had good genetics – one of the fundamental principles Peter had for breeding Rough Collies. He climbed up the stairs and made his way into his house before flicking on the switch for the kettle. He quickly made himself a tea before settling down to listen to his favourite opera music. The music soothed and calmed him, and it was something he liked to do before bed. After an hour of listening Peter made his way to bed. He pulled back the covers and settled himself between the sheets letting his eyes close before drifting off to a dreamless slumber. Peter woke to sunlight filtering his room. He rubbed the sleep from his eyes before going into the kitchen to make a morning cuppa. As he waited for the kettle to boil, he could hear a whimpering noise coming from the back porch. Peter frowned and went to investigate, Annie thumped her tail when she saw her master. Two puppies were nestled under her having their first drink of mother’s milk. Peter blinked and at first was unsure of what he was seeing. A cool breeze blew gently prompting him to

Shep - the Collie Rough react to the puppies that were not due for another few days. Cursing softly under his breath he quickly went back inside and grabbing some blankets, set up a make-shift bed for Annie and her babies. ‘Girl you weren’t supposed to come until next week.’ Peter patted Annie affectionately as she settled herself on the blankets. Peter carefully examined each pup making sure they were healthy before placing them back onto their mother’s teat. After making sure the dog was settled, he made his way down the stairs looking for more pups. His other dogs barked a greeting as they watched him check the area near the house. Peter found another pup and carefully picked it up taking it up to Annie. He once again checked the property for any more puppies but was relieved to find no more. Peter promptly went to work on putting the whelping box together and settling Annie and her puppies inside. He placed a fresh bowl of water beside the whelping box before making himself the tea he had started to make earlier that morning. When he had finished, he made his way downstairs again letting out the dogs and doing his morning chores. He noticed his oldest dog Shep in the garden – he had forgotten to lock him in his crate the previous evening. Peter paid him no attention as he began to prune and cut his rose bushes. As he immersed himself in the cutting of the fresh
blooms, he heard a faint whimpering. He paused and cocked his head. There it was again. Peter shook his head and his brow puckered in a tight frown as he strained to hear where the sound was coming from. He made his way in the direction of where he thought he could hear it, leaving the flowers in a pile where he had cut them. He walked around checking all the places where a mother dog could possibly have given birth. Peter shook his head, the whimpering or what he thought was whimpering, had stopped. He stood for a moment waiting to see if the crying of a pup would start again. Silence hung heavily in the air. Peter pulled at his beard before placing his hands on his hips.

His dogs swirled around his legs begging for a pat. Peter swept his gaze once again over the huge garden. There was no whimpering and no pup. Peter shrugged muttering to himself that he was getting old and went back to where he had been cutting the flowers only minutes before. Peter cut the last of the roses and smiled. The roses were larger than normal and emitted a sweet fragrance. He breathed in their scent pleased that he had grown such beautiful specimens. He picked up the bucket that was full of the flowers and walked towards the house. As he neared the stairs, he noticed Shep coming towards him. He was carrying something in his mouth. Peter frowned, squinting to see what his old dog was carrying. He dropped the bucket and walked towards the approaching dog. A feeling of shock and awe rippled through him as he soon learned that what was in Shep’s mouth was a puppy. ‘What have you got there boy?’ Peter kneeled in front of the dog and Shep gently dropped the pup. The puppy let out a feeble cry and Peter carefully picked him up. ‘You’ve been looking after him Shep?’ Peter grinned. He ruffled Shep’s coat shaking his head. Peter took the pup upstairs and offered it to Annie hoping she wouldn’t reject it. Annie sniffed the puppy before she began to lick it. Peter placed it on one of her teats where after some encouragement the puppy began to drink. Peter couldn’t stop smiling and a warm feeling spread through him. Shep, it seemed had taken care of the puppy for most of the night and Peter was grateful that he had forgotten to lock him in his crate. The tenderness that his dog had showed towards the youngster was amazing and it would be something that Peter would never forget.

2023 Dog Of The Year... what a great night of celebration of Queensland’s Top Canines! – Katrina Santas Chair, Marketing and PR Committee After some four years with no Dog of the Year event, it was great to see everyone back together to celebrate the winning achievements of our top dogs from across the state and celebrate some of the festive season with their show family and friends. Mystery Judges, Mr Dong Ping from China, Mr Darren Bowey from Victoria and our own Mr Leah James from Far North Queensland were impressed with the quality of the dogs on show and enjoyed the honour of awarding Ashton and Hutchings’ Afghan Hound, Supreme Champion Suliman Definnitely (AI) JC the 2023 Dog of the Year title.
24
DOG WORLD February 2024
Hotly contested and well-deserved Runner Up from 53 entrants, was Hammond’s German Shepherd Dog, CIB Supreme Champion Karham Know It All. The evening was well attended, and the weather Gods looked after everyone well, holding off all storms and providing for a lovely clear skied event. As the evening went through, there was more than just dogs on show, with the fun of the Fashions on the Field giving everyone some good laughs and great times too. This year saw a redraw at the end of each round so that the ongoing heats provided for that bit more excitement as no ongoing winner knew who they would be up against next in
the upcoming head to head heats … everyone certainly seemed keen to gather together and redraw each round and this certainly made for a higher level of excitement and ohhhs and ahhhs! The committee would like to thank everyone for supporting the monster raffle of seven prizes provided by the sponsors which brought some excellent funds back to committee to go towards the running of the event. Events like this take a lot of effort from a small group of dedicated people to ensure everything comes together for everyone to enjoy … thank you to: • the office team at DQ for their long hours and extended effort in providing the behind the scenes work and catalogue; • the grounds staff for ensuring the ring was well prepared and the layout was just spot on – those early mornings and extended work hours in the hot sun in the holiday period are certainly greatly appreciated; • the team at Wags Café for ensuing everyone was well fed and hydrated – many thanks; • the committee which strove to provide the best event possible in a very short time frame – I thank you for all your efforts, great ideas and hard work to make the night come to fruition. Though the night cannot be left without thanking the seventeen organisations that sponsored 2023 Dog Of The Year providing the near $35,000 worth of sponsorship, prizing and support … these organisations are the backbone to our sport, they provide the means to make our canines flourish and achieve how they do. Without their products and services we would not have the high level of quality in our dogs, the ability to travel with them with such ease or the capability to highlight our achievements. Thus, many thanks to these organisations and we look forward to working with you more throughout 2024 in the lead up to the next Dog of the Year:
• Dogs Queensland • Royal Canin • Brisbane Screen Printing • World Class Hounds • Orivet • Laser Lites • Wagz Café • Tak Photography • Show Manager • Dogs News Australia • Sires On Ice • CCrates • Paws In Style • Lauren Moxham Show Dog Designs • Lead On Lead • Dogz Online • LilCracka Pet Supplies Over the course of the evening, participants also provided feedback on the event and what they may like to see in future events, which the committee express their thanks to all those that provided feedback. All comments have been taken on board and the committee are already working hard to ensure those ideas for improvement are actioned where possible and those ideas on changes may come to fruition to make future events even more exciting. Once again, congratulations to all the qualifying dogs for a superb 2023 show season and attaining your place to compete for Top Dog. The Marketing and Public Relations Committee look forward to seeing as many of you as possible re-qualify for the 2024 event … look out for more details on this shortly together with Puppy and Neuter of the Year 2024. Katrina Santas – Chair, Marketing and PR Committee
… all your efforts were very much appreciated by the committee and the exhibitors on a fantastic job.
What a way to finish and celebrate 2023 than to combine Festive Fiesta and Dog of the Year … exhibitors have spoken and many have said how much they love Festive Fiesta every year and now combining it with DOTY just brought the end of year to the best finale possible – a K9 celebration in the best festive atmosphere.
The committee also hope everyone enjoyed their photos this year with the new podium backdrop which highlighted the Brisbane Cityscape of New Year Celebrations … if you have not seen these great photos, please check out TAK Photography’s website to see these stunning memories of a great Festival of Shows.
Well done KAQ (Kennel Association of Queensland) and the Marketing and PR Committee on bringing 2023 to another great end of year. Once again, Festive Fiesta exhibit numbers were the best of the Dogs Queensland show numbers for the year … it certainly proves that exhibitors love to get together and celebrate the Christmas/New Year period, the large extended family that we are.
Many thanks to the sponsors of Festive Fiesta for 2023, Royal Canin for always providing great support and great nutrition to the winners; Orivet for always supporting the genetic development of our Queensland dogs; and Top Dog Media with their continuous support to highlight and showcase our events in Dogs News Australia.
Thank you to the exhibitors from interstate for joining us as always, we love to see you up here enjoying our hospitality and providing for some great end of year competition. The committee were conscious each day of the weather, the changing patterns and possible storms, thus reacting well when needed and providing exhibitors with good notice too when required to change start times. This accommodated everyone and every dogs’ safety in travelling to the shows and also in competing. It’s being proactive like this that makes events safer for our dogs and we as exhibitors too, to not only compete safely but enjoyably as well. A huge thanks to the Grounds Staff for all their hard work in preparing for DOTY then changing the rings so quickly for the start to Festive Fiesta the next day

Multidisciplinary ChampionSweepstakes – KIm Dawson In June 2023 the Multidisciplinary Sweepstakes was offered for the first time in Queensland as a feature of the FCI show cluster held at Durack and sponsored by Royal Canin. Judged under FCI rules by Mr Calin Simu (Romania), the Multidisciplinary Champion Sweepstakes showcased both form and function for those breeds entered. What is a Multidisciplinary Champion? To be recognised as a multidisciplinary champion, an exhibit at a minimum must be eligible for the title of Dual Champion under Dogs Australia regulations, although the title itself need not have been applied for. The Dual Champion title, along with subsequent multidisciplinary titles such as Triple Champion and Dual Grand Champion, are the most difficult titles to attain. These are the only title that certify that the dog has sufficient breed type to earn a show championship and the sporting aptitude to earn a sporting championship – a rare feat for any breed! To attain a Dual Championship, a dog must be eligible for a Conformation Championship:
• Champion (Ch, Neut Ch) • Grand Champion (Grand Ch, Neut Grand Ch) • Supreme Champion (Sup Ch) In addition to a recognised Dogs Australia sporting
discipline Championship title, such as:
• Obedience Champion or Grand Champion • • • • • • • • •
(O.Ch, O.Gr.Ch) Rally Champion (R.Ch) Agility and Jumping Champion (Ag Ch) Tracking Champion or Grand Champion (T.Ch, T Gr Ch) Track and Search Champion or Grand Champion (TS.Ch, TS Gr Ch) Herding Champion, Grand Champion or Versatility Champion (HCH, GRHCH, VHCH, VHCHX) Dances with Dogs (DWD) Champion or Grand Champion (FS.Ch, HTM.Ch, FS.Gr.Ch, HTM. Gr.Ch) Lure Coursing Champion (sFCH, FCH, vFCH) Retrieving Champion or Grand Champion (R.T.Ch, Gr.R.T.Ch) Earth Dog Champion or Grand Champion (ED.Ch, ED.Gr.Ch)
In rare instances, dogs can be awarded the title of Triple Champion (Tri Ch), Dual Grand Champion (Dual Gr Ch), and potentially beyond. Multidisciplinary Champion Sweepstakes Entries 2023 Eight dogs were entered in the Multidisciplinary Champion Sweepstakes, with five entering the ring.

Welcome To Zone 2 News! A NEW START TO THE 2024 SHOW CALENDAR – Katrina Santas Well done Isis & District Canine Club for trying something different and putting on the first shows in Queensland for 2024. As we all know, January is not always ideal for shows during the day here in sunny Zone 2 or anywhere in Queensland, but the club gave it their best shot to try and engage with the local and extended family of exhibitors across our state to give them an event to whet their appetite for showing early in the new year. The shows were held at the awesome Bundaberg Showgrounds in the regular and immaculate canine rings … the club supplied extra gazebos for exhibitors and their dogs to be shaded under whilst awaiting their call which allowed the judge to have their own gazebo to stay out of the weather too … and that’s where it all got interesting … Many were expecting high humidity with two hot, sunny days, but instead we were greeted with weather like Melbourne … hot then overcast then wet then cold then hot again … and that was just in one day! Needless to say, there were a few wet dogs and handlers but all seemed to enjoy the romp in the rain! The Saturday PM show had General Specials move to an undercover area close by in the evening to allow the BIS judge to get the best out of the dogs,
42
DOG WORLD February 2024
which was a blessing for everyone as the rain turned torrential … but also took away the heat which was great. Overall, the judges had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed their experience in Bundy and even managed a visit on Sunday afternoon to the new Bundaberg Rum Distillery … the exhibitors gave some great feedback to the club and supported the committee well with their ideas and willingness to return next year … and the club put on a well run event in very trying conditions at times. The take out from the event is that the exhibitors have enjoyed getting together post new year for a catch up at the shows; the committee were extremely pleased with the support from the exhibitors both from near and far that came to the shows; and it is highly likely that the club will be looking for your support in some upcoming fundraising activities to cover the costs of hiring the undercover horse arena for next years events. So look out for these fundraising activities on Show Manager for the Isis & Districts Canine Club throughout 2024 and mark your calendar now for 2025 for a great three show event in early January in a great undercover arena with heaps of room to set up, camp and enjoy some time with friends in the holiday season of 2025. Congrats to the three different Best in Show Winners
and also to those that took out Runner Up - all of whom were from the Puppy Class at each show: Saturday AM: BIS: Murdoch’s Shetland Sheepdog, Ch Donriver How Very Surprising RUBIS: Wright’s Scottish Terrier, Upyrkilt I Spy Saturday PM: BIS: Santas’ Keeshond, Sup Ch Hunkeedori Anglin N Danglin (AI) RUBIS: Thomas’ Australian Shepherd, Ochaye The Treblemaker Sunday AM: BIS: Wright’s Scottish Terrier, Upyrkilt I Spy RUBIS: Thomas’ Australian Shepherd, Ochaye The Treblemaker
Maryborough Kennel Club is ready for February Another great venue for shows in Zone 2 is Maryborough Showground … and the Maryborough Kennel Club are all ready for their February double show weekend (Saturday evening and Sunday morning in mid-February). The grounds have been well prepared yet again by the committee and the grass is green and trimmed to perfection, the new lights that were installed last year are ready for the evening action and the camp grounds are vast, giving everyone plenty of room. If you have not been to a show at Maryborough, pop it on your calendar of mustattend events in February. It’s easy location on the Bruce Highway makes it an ideal access venue plus if you are not a camper, the local motels are very happy to have you stay too and having dogs with you is no problem at all! See you at Maryborough soon! All images on pages 46 and 47 are courtesy of Patrik Berger Photography. Zone 3 News! A big zone with an even bigger heart
– Gordon Mayne In simple terms, Zone 3 is massive. At approximately 669,000 km2, Zone 3 is nearly twice the size of Zone 1. The western most club, Cloncurry, is closer to the Northern Territory border than it is to the coast. Durack is closer to Melbourne, than it is to the northern most club, DogzCairns. Zone 3 is also diverse, the industry, climate and natural landscapes – the arid outback, tropical rainforests and the spectacular Great Barrier Reef. It is this diversity that brings Dogs Queensland members in Zone 3 together and gives us the determination to do awe-inspiring things. The wet season means that our show and trial season is compressed from March through to October. Our members routinely travel hundreds of kilometres every weekend to attend dog shows and sports trials across the zone. Attending an event is as much about catching up with friends and participating, but also about showing support for and helping other clubs. Many people are also members of multiple clubs across the Zone. The most impressive thing is the work of our volunteers. Week in, and week out, our volunteers
44
DOG WORLD February 2024
work tirelessly to plan and run these events throughout the year. Often on top of work and other commitments. Thank you everyone for your efforts. There were some amazing achievements for our Zone 3 clubs in 2023. These are just a few highlights of the many great achievements. Being part of the local community is important, and the 2 clubs based in Atherton – the Atherton Tablelands Kennel Club and Tablelands Dog Obedience Club – are great examples of how this can work for everyone’s benefit. These two clubs worked together to cooperatively share grounds in Atherton which means that dog shows and dog sports trials are held locally. A win for both clubs and the Atherton community. The Canine Obedience Club of Townsville held its first Scent Work Trial. The club has a strong history of running successful Agility, Obedience and Tracking Trials. It was a simple and easy transition to Scent Works Well done. On the subject of Scent Work, the Cairns City Kennel Club continues to grow its participation
in Scent Work at an incredible rate. The club held a double Scent Works trial with over 35 dogs entered. It took an incredible amount of planning and organisation to run the trial.
Cairns City Kennel Club (CCKC) team with Gulliver.
When you drive into Tully you are welcomed by a giant gumboot. This is in recognition of Tully receiving an average of over 4,000 mm of rain annually. But this doesn’t stop this little club pushing through and making sure exhibitors have a great weekend. At the end of the day, we all have a great time and share a good laugh. But it’s not always wet, more often the weather is glorious. A little secret, Sally’s pancakes for breakfast on Sunday morning are to die for. The Innisfail Ag Show presented some challenges to exhibitors. The local tractor driver made a small fortune towing exhibitors’ bogged cars and vans out of the muddy quagmire. The highlight (if you could call it that) was the freak storm that blew down the large marquee used for the assembly area. Thankfully no people or dogs were harmed.
Windswept gazebos are no match for this team.
Members in Zone 3 came together to support Charters Towers Kennel Club. Despite a challenge at the beginning of the year, members banded together and got the club back up and running full steam ahead. We look forward to their shows in 2024. Our newest club, Burdekin, held its first shows in September. The club also runs weekly dog Obedience classes. This has generated great community support which was evidenced by the sponsorship of their first shows by the local shire council. It will be great to see how the club grows over the coming years. There are of course many more great and inspiring moments for individuals and clubs alike. Zone 3 is a great community of diverse dog lovers. Thank you to everyone in Zone 3 for being part of this great community!
