Most weekends across the state, many of our members enjoy various dog conformation show and sporting events. For majority of people, this means turning up on the day and enjoying their day out.

There is however, hours of work going on behind the scenes before, during and after these events. We need to acknowledge the volunteers who perform endless hours of work to ensure these events are a success.

On 9 June 2023 at Caboolture & Districts P A & I Association, we were able to acknowledge three of our long-standing members. These ladies have volunteered their time and expertise for many years contributing to shows as writers as well as holding numerous positions in affiliated clubs.

We would like to thank and congratulate, Bev O’Hara, Judy Langton, and Margaret Alderton, for all the years of service to the dog world. These ladies will be putting down their pens and retiring from these positions in coming months.

We hope Bev, Judy and Margaret continue to enjoy attending shows on a less formal basis.

We also need stewards to make the shows function. We are seeing more and more calls from clubs needing stewards!! This is not only for trainee judges, but is something for all members to consider.

Board Notes – July 2023

SHOWS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH DOGS QUEENSLAND

For a number of years now, a number of clubs have held shows in conjunction with Dogs Queensland, the following have been or will be held in 2023;

• April: Junior Weekend – DQ and Junior KC

• April/May: Western Weekend – DQ and Western Suburbs KC

• June: Yuggera Weekend – DQ and Yuggera KC

• September: API Weekend – DQ Paws Aid Committee and Waterloo Bay KC

• November: DQ and Caboolture

• December: Festive Fiesta – DQ and KAQ

When Dogs Queensland works with the C-clubs, all airfares and accommodation are booked by the Office on behalf of the joint entity and other administration support is provided. All accounts are taken care of by the office and the events are sponsored by Royal Canin as a general rule.

Once the show is completed, a full profit and loss is provided and profits split between DQ and the club involved.

The Board has written to all clubs currently with an arrangement to ascertain if they wish to continue for 2024, they have been asked to submit an EOI. Similarly, if any club wishes to look at starting a similar arrangement, including those in Zone 2 and Zone 3, send an EOI in the first instance to rob@dogsqueensland.org.au.

INTENTION TO LODGE A COMPLAINT

All Members are reminded of the following Rule in regards to Shows.

71.9 Incidents involving members which occur at Exhibitions or Club activities of any kind are to be reported to the Event Manager or Club official (President or Secretary) immediately. All details of the incident are to be noted and forwarded in a report submitted to the Secretary of the CCCQ Ltd with the Event Manager’s Report within five (5) working days.

In cases where the member / non member wishes to lodge a formal complaint, a Notice of Intention to Lodge a Complaint form must be completed on the

day of the Exhibition and forwarded with the Event Manager’s Report. The member then has fourteen (14) days from the date of the Exhibition to lodge the complaint in accord with the Dogs Queensland Complaints Procedure. PROPOSED REVIEW OF ANIMAL MANAGEMENT (CATS AND DOGS) ACT 2008

The Queensland Government is currently in the process of reviewing the above Act.

Mark Furner, Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities, has reaffirmed the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to reforming the Animal Management (Cats & Dogs) Act 2008, with a view to progressing reforms that are a priority for councils and the community. “The Palaszczuk Government is committed to keeping our

community safe and ensuring that irresponsible dog owners are held accountable.”

The proposed reforms will be focused particularly on dog attacks and dangerous dogs and are likely to include:

• Increases in penalties for the most serious dog attack offences, including imprisonment as an option.

• A ban on restricted dog breeds.

• Fast-tracking of decisions and appeals on the future of seized dangerous animals.

• Continued assessment of further tough reforms through the taskforce and technical working group process.

• Development of a community education program.

The Discussion Paper on the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 has now been released. This includes a number of survey questions: Take the survey: DAF.engagementhub.com.au/ dog-laws/userinfo/dog-laws. Feedback closes Thursday 24 August 2023.

Dogs Queensland will endeavour to keep members informed and is preparing a submission in response.

GUIDELINES FOR CONDUCTING AGILITY — VETERAN’S CLASS

For Affiliates:

• An affiliate may offer a non-qualifying, Veteran’s class at any trial.

• Class may be advertised on Qld Agility Facebook page.

• Entries will be accepted on the day.

• Handlers need to nominate at check-in.

• Cost to enter as per DQ levy ie: $2 non-Durack events and $5 Durack events.

• Clubs may offer prize/certificate/ribbon.

Eligible dogs:

• Have been retired from active agility competition.

• Dogs will run only Novice class.

• Height will be no more than 400 mm.

• Dogs must be 7 years and over to compete.

Eligible dogs:

• Dogs will run only Novice class.

• Dogs may be from any level (ie: Masters dog may be handled).

SCENT WORK BALLOTING PROCEDURE

OFFICIAL BALLOTING PROCESS FOR SCENT WORK TRIALS IN QUEENSLAND

The current ANKC rules for Scent Work Trials state:

8.2 Entry Limits

8.2.1 An Affiliate may determine which Elements are to be offered in any trial and will specify such details in the Schedule.

8.2.2 If an Affiliate elects, it may place limits on the number of entries on which a Judge can adjudicate at any trial and/or on the number of entries to be accepted in a single class, set of classes or trial. Any such limit(s) on total entries or entries in any class or for any Judge must be stated in the Schedule. Should a ballot of entries be necessary, then the balloting procedures of the member body shall be followed.

8.2.3 An Affiliate may, if entry numbers exceed the stated limit, appoint an additional Judge.

Affiliated clubs MUST consider the following guiding principles when conducting a ballot:

1. In the interests of fairness, all eligible owners and dogs shall be permitted to enter a Scent Work Trial.

2. Practical limits may be imposed on trial entry numbers that an Affiliate may accommodate, such as judge availability, venue restrictions, day or night trial. While the preference is to appoint an additional judge wherever possible, it is recognised that this is not always a practical option for clubs. Where limits have been identified, these are to be listed on the Trial Schedule in addition to the date and time that entries will open.

3. If, at the close of entries, more entries have been received than the Affiliate can accommodate a ballot will be conducted.

4. Each element-class will be balloted separately.

5. In a multi-element/multi-class trial an owner can only have one (1) dog balloted out of one element-class. If the dog balloted out of one element-class that dog will automatically be allowed to compete in all other element-classes in which it has been entered.

6. In a multi-element/multi-class trial, if an owner has more than one (1) dog entered and one dog is balloted out, then all the other dogs will automatically be allowed to compete in all other element-classes in which they are entered.

7. If an owner has more than one (1) dog entered in a one-element trial and one dog is balloted out, then all other dogs will automatically be allowed to compete in the classes in which they are entered.

8. If an owner has more than one (1) dog entered in the same element-class (i.e., there is another handler) and one dog is balloted out, the owner may choose which dog will compete. Should the chosen dog become ineligible or unable to compete (i.e., due to injury, illness, or bitch in oestrus), then the dog originally balloted out may be substituted for this situation only and must be advised prior to publication of the Trial Catalogue.

The Official Balloting Procedure for Dogs Queensland Affiliated Club holding Scent Work Trials will be as follows:

1. The Ballot must be conducted by a minimum of two (2) people, with at least one (1) person selected from each of the following two groups:

 Group 1: Trial Secretary, Trial Manager, President, Vice-President, or Treasurer of the Affiliate conducting the Trial.

 Group 2: Any other financial club member of the Affiliate conducting the Trial.

2. The Ballot location, date and time must be advertised in the trial schedule. Any competitor may witness the Balloting procedure in person or remotely (i.e., the ballot is not a closed session).

3. The Ballot must be conducted in a manner which is random and blind (i.e., all entries are included, and each has an equal probability of being selected).

4. All entries received for the class/element to be balloted (excluding those who have already been balloted out of a class/element) are placed in a container.

5. A name is selected at random from the container.

6. That selection is the dog balloted out of that class/element.

7. A list is kept of the balloted dogs in order of balloting for each class/element.

8. The dog balloted out must then be removed from the ballot for any remaining class/element selections.

9. The ballot continues for all required class/elements until the number of remaining entries equals the number of entries the Affiliate conducting the Trial may accommodate.

10. The Trial Secretary notifies all affected entrants of the ballot outcome.

11. Should cancellations or upgrades result in a vacancy with a class/element, the Trial Secretary shall offer the vacancy to the first dog on the ballot list (i.e., the first dog balloted out) for that class/element.

12. Should the first dog on the ballot list not wish to take the vacant spot, it shall be offered to the next dog on the list and so on in the order the dogs were balloted out.

13. A list of the dogs balloted, the date, time and location of the Ballot in addition to the names of the people who conducted the ballot and any attendees are to be attached to the Trial Manager Report submitted to Dogs Queensland as part of the official post-trial paperwork.

In reality a hound of great presence, intelligent and loyal, not disguising his affection, yet demonstrating a devotion to duty to the point of protecting its owner and possessions to the death if required.

HISTORY OF THE BREED

The Rhodesian Ridgeback originated in Southern Africa where the early European settlers mated their imported sporting breeds with the small fierce hunting dogs owned by the Hottentots to produce a guard/hunting dog ideally suited to the local conditions.

The Hottentot hunting dog had a ridge of hair along its spine running in a reverse direction to the rest of the coat. The historian George McCall Theal was the first to describe this characteristic ridge when writing on conditions in Southern Africa before 1505. The ridge of the Hottentot hunting dog became a feature of the cross matings between the European breeds and the indigenous dogs. These “Ridgebacks” were used as functional all-purpose guard and hunting dogs and it was found that they surpassed any other breed when hunting lions. Ridgebacks were not expected to kill lions - no dog could do that as a lion is an extremely powerful and heavy big cat standing about 95cm at the shoulder. The Ridgeback would track the lion and bail it up enabling the hunter to come in and shoot it. This required intelligence, cunning, tremendous athleticism and agility on the part of the dogs. Ridgebacks were, however, expected to chase, catch and pull down lesser game, and would kill a lion cub without hesitation.

The first recorded pair of ridged dogs to go from to Central Africa (then Rhodesian now) were taken by the Rev. Charles Helm in 1879 to Hoe Fountain Mission (near what is now Bulawayo) probably from the Swellendam, Cape Colony.

During the late 19th century, the reputation of the Ridgeback in the hunting field became established by the exploits of the famous big game hunter in Rhodesian named Cornelius Van Rooyen who had a pack of these dogs. Van Rooyen’s dogs were very similar to today’s Rhodesian Ridgebacks. By the late 1920’s when the days of big game hunting on a grand scale were drawing to a close it became apparent that Ridgebacks might disappear if the breed was not standardised and breeders encouraged to strive to conform.

The standard of the breed borrowed much from the Dalmatian standard and was drawn up by Mr.

FR Barnes after he called a meeting of “Ridgeback” owners in Bulawayo in 1922. This standard was accepted by the South African Kennel Union (now the Kennel Union of South Africa (KUSA) in 1924.

GENERAL APPEARANCE

The Rhodesian Ridgeback should represent a well-balanced, strong, muscular, agile and active dog, symmetrical in outline and capable of great endurance with a fair amount of speed. The

emphasis is on agility, elegance and soundness with no tendency towards massiveness. The peculiarity of the breed is the ridge on the back, which is formed by the hair growing in the opposite direction to the rest of the coat.

CHARACTERISTICS

The ridge must be clearly defined, symmetrical and tapering towards the haunch. It must start immediately behind the shoulders and continue to the hip (haunches) bones. The ridge must contain only two crowns, identical and opposite each other. The lower edges of the crowns must not extend further down the ridge than one-third of its length. A good average width of the ridge is 5 cm.

Head And Skull: Cranial Region, Skull should be of a fair length (width of head between ears, distance from occiput to stop, stop to end of nose, should be equal), flat and broad between the ears; the head should be free from wrinkles when in repose. Stop should be reasonably well defined and not in one straight line from the nose to the occipital bone.

Facial Region: Nose should be black or brown. A black nose should be accompanied by dark eyes, a brown nose by amber eyes. Muzzle should be long, deep and powerful. Lips should be clean, closely fitting the jaws. Cheeks should be clean and eyes should be moderately well apart, round, bright and sparkling, with intelligent expression, their colour harmonising with the colour of the coat.

Ears should be set rather high, of medium size,

rather wide at base and gradually tapering to a rounded point. They should be carried close to the head.

Mouth: Jaws strong with a perfect and complete scissor bite, i.e. the upper teeth closely overlapping the lower teeth and set square to the jaws. The teeth must be well developed, especially the canines or holders. Neck should be fairly long, strong and free from throatiness.

Forequarters: The forelegs should be perfectly straight, strong and well boned, with the elbows close to the body. When viewed from the side, the forelegs should be wider than viewed from the front. Pasterns should be strong with slight spring. Shoulders should be sloping, clean and muscular, denoting speed.

Body: Back should be powerful, loins strong, muscular and slightly arched. The chest should not be too wide, but very deep and capacious; the brisket should reach to the elbow. Forechest should be visible when viewed from the side.

Ribs should be moderately well sprung, never rounded like barrel-hoops.

Hindquarters: In the hind legs the muscles should be clean and well defined with good turn of stifle and strong hocks well let down.

Feet should be compact and round with well arched toes and tough, elastic pads, protected by hair between the toes and pads.

Tail should be strong at the root and gradually tapering towards the end, free from coarseness. It should be of moderate length. It should not be attached too high nor too low and should be carried with a slight curve upwards, never curled.

Gait and movement should be straight forward, free and active.

Hair, should be short and dense, sleek and glossy in appearance but neither woolly nor silky.

Light wheaten to red wheaten. A little white on the chest and toes is permissible, but excessive white hairs here, on belly or above toes is undesirable. A dark muzzle and ears permissible. Excessive black hairs throughout the coat are highly undesirable.

RIDGEBACK ACTIVITIES

The functions of the Rhodesian Ridgeback are primarily those of a family companion and protector, with the greatest density of the breed being in major metropolitan areas. The temperament of the breed is ideally suited with

the dogs being gentle with children on one hand, fearless watch dogs on the other. The character of the Rhodesian Ridgeback can best be described as eccentric, with a wicked sense of humour. In reality a hound of great presence, intelligent and loyal, not disguising his affection, yet demonstrating a devotion to duty to the point of protecting its owner and possessions to the death if required.

FAMILY PET

This large, sleepy and apparently slow moving animal with its characteristic love of lazing, preferably leaning against you or sitting on your feet, can be transformed into a graceful streak of rhythmic motion or at times display an air of outright stupidity and clumsiness. This apparent stupidity and clumsiness disguise a high degree of intelligence. Children are treated to varying degrees of tolerance, from indifference to affection of embarrassing proportions. The great danger arises from the sheer size and strength, and boisterous enthusiasm for human play and affection. They are an intelligent breed, however this doesn’t mean they are great pleasers. They are a breed recommended for experienced owners only. Consistent and ongoing training is essential for a Rhodesian Ridgeback. As noted in one of the first breed standards for the Ridgeback “rough treatment…should never be administered to these dogs…..they go to pieces with handling of that kind” (F

OBEDIENCE

The young and adolescent Ridgeback does have a tendency toward exuberance and naughtiness. It is important for new owners to assert their dominance gently but firmly. A Ridgeback will respond readily to flattery, praise, and firm handling.

With an inherent strong will and self-determination it cannot be “beaten into submission” but should be jollied along to obtain the best results. A gruff voice will usually suffice to install discipline. In the obedience sphere several Ridgebacks have gained the basic obedience title of CD (Companion Dog) with some owners taking their dogs on to CDX (Companion Dog Excellent), UD (Utility Dog), TD (Tracking Dog) and TDX (Tracking Dog Excellent). The intelligence of the breed can be constructively channeled - despite that stubborn streak.

AGILITY

Ridgebacks often earn the epithet “Houdini Hound” for their surprisingly athletic feats of agility. Ridgebacks excel at Agility trialing where the dogs are put over jumps, through tunnels, up A-Frames and over dog walks, etc., in a timed competition. Several dogs have successfully gained AD (Agility Dog), ADX (Agility Dog Excellent) and ADM (Agility Dog Master) titles. They also excel at a newer form of Agility called Jumping Dog. It comprises of only jumps, tunnels and weave poles, with no contact obstacles as in Agility. A number of dogs have successfully gained JD (Jumping Dog), JDX (Jumping Dog Excellent), and JDM (Jumping Dog Master) titles.

to enhance their speed in the hunt and so the breed is capable of recording fast times. This sport is one that perhaps best utilises the Ridgeback’s inherent abilities and is certainly one that most Ridgebacks thoroughly enjoy.

LURE COURSING

The Ridgeback is capable of achieving very fast racing speeds. Their strength combined with their tenacity and cunning more than make up for any lack of acceleration. The Ridgeback’s forefathers were probably interbred with Greyhounds in order

ENDURANCE TRIAL

The 20km endurance test can be done by either bike of jogging with your dog under a time constraint, with the dog neither lagging nor pulling ahead. Most Ridgebacks have no problem attaining this title.

HUNTING DOGS

The Ridgeback has plenty of stamina. Their endurance is such that he can run several miles at a fast lope and can go a good 24 hours or more without water. A number of the breed are still worked in rural areas, primarily in the control of vermin such as rabbits and wild pigs. Ridgebacks have also been used in to track and kill foxes, pull down feral goats and point and retrieve birds such as ducks and quail.

The distinctive combination of cunning and senses of sight and smell, coupled with amazing speed and agility for such a large hound, are often ably demonstrated. Yet with such apparent dynamism,

great self control is the forte of a mature Rhodesian Ridgeback.

GUARD DOG

The Boer settler used the Ridgeback to guard the farm from marauding animals and prowlers at night. In addition, he needed a companion that would stay by him while he slept in the bush and that would be devoted to his wife and children. Henceforth the Ridgeback has taken the role of guard dog in the army and the diamond mines and is used by the Canadian Police Force for guard duty. The Ridgeback demonstrates uncanny loyalty and devotion to his owner and family, often singling out one individual as their special possession, on which to unleash their affection. It is often said that you do not own a Ridgeback, but rather they own you. Ridgebacks do not give voice unnecessarily but only of sufficient proportion to warn of danger.

This characteristic, coupled with a basically casual and lazy attitude to life can be deceptive, but rest assured, the ridged hulk that sleeps for long periods, often stretched out in front of doorways or on sofas, is rapidly stirred into an alert deterrent to all trespassers.

POTENTIAL HEALTH ISSUES

Ridgebacks as a breed are generally free from problems, however everyone who owns a Rhodesian Ridgeback should be aware of Dermoid Sinus and Hip and Elbow Dysplasia.

Elbows - Rhodesian Ridgebacks, like other large breed dogs, can be prone to elbow dysplasia.

Elbow dysplasia is a condition which means the elbow develops abnormally and can lead to pain and arthritis in the joint.

Hips - Hip dysplasia is another condition often seen in large breed dogs. This occurs when the ‘ball’ of the hip doesn’t fit perfectly in the ‘socket’ and the socket is too shallow. This often results in pain and arthritis.

Check with your breeder to see if the parents have been hip and elbow scored. Parents with perfect elbow and hip scores and less likely to have offspring with joint issues (although it is still possible).

Dermoid sinus – is a genetic condition which is known to affect ridgebacks. A dermoid sinus is a neural tube defect and affected dogs will have a small opening on the skin on the midline of the back. Often a thickened cord can be felt underneath the skin. This open tube can sometimes extend all the way into the spinal cord which can lead to serious consequences such as meningitis. This is usually treated surgically.

Owning a Rhodesian Ridgeback (or rather being owned by a Rhodesian Ridgeback) is a privilege.

What is brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS)?

Dogs with a flat, wide-shaped head are said to be brachycephalic (‘brachy’ meaning short, and ‘cephalic’, meaning head). The shape of the skull means that the nasal tissue and soft palate fits into a relatively smaller area which can lead to partial airway obstruction (causing heavy panting or noisy breathing). Obstruction of the airways can impair a dog’s ability to exercise, play, eat, drink and sleep. Affected dogs may require surgery. This condition is known as BOAS and is a progressive disorder.

Respiratory Function Grading Scheme

The University of Cambridge and the Kennel Club (UK) Respiratory Function Grading Scheme assesses (BOAS) and is designed to provide a non-invasive and objective assessment of the severity of BOAS in brachycephalic breeds. It is currently being applied in assessment of the following breeds: British Bulldogs, French Bulldogs and Pugs.

• Green: the lowest risk of breeding dogs affected by BOAS

• Amber: a higher risk of producing puppies that may grow up to be affected by BOAS

• Red: a mating which has a high risk of producing puppies that may grow up to be affected b y BOAS. These matings are not recommended. Producing puppies affected by BOAS has a serious impact on their health and welfare. A mating which may produce affected puppies should ne ver knowingly be carried out

The intent of the scheme is to improve understanding and to increase awareness of the condition, to collect data and also provide guidance to breeders on how to lower the risk of producing affected puppies and ultimately (through selective breeding) reduce the incidence of BOAS in these breeds.

Dogs can be assessed from the age of 12 months and this should be repeated every two years or until the dog is excluded from the breeding program.

The way that BOAS is inherited is not fully understood and is not always entirely predictable.

The guidelines are designed to assist in reducing the risk of breeding puppies affected by BOAS. However, there are no guarantees with living animals. Even if the guidelines are followed, this does not guarantee that a puppy from two unaffected parents will not be affected by BOAS.

The scheme has been accepted widely around the world as a method of grading dogs for respiratory function.

Dogs Australia (ANKC) is the peak body in Australia responsible for Registered Pure Bred dogs and is a not-for-profit organisation which together with its affiliated State and Territory Member Bodies advocates for the preservation of purebred dogs and dedicated to promoting the health and welfare of companion animals through ethical and responsible breeding practices.

Dogs Australia joined this international effort just prior to the COVID pandemic and after being delayed by the pandemic is currently in the process of rolling out the RFG Scheme in Australia. Results will be available on the ORCHID database: orchid@dogsaustralia.org.au

As part of its agreement with the Kennel Club, Dogs Australia has appointed Dr. Arthur House BSc BVMS Ph.D. Cert SAS DECVS as Australia’s Chief Assessor for the RFG Scheme, an internationally recognized specialist small animal surgeon in both Australia and Europe. Dr House recently visited the UK to be briefed on the supervision of the Scheme by Dr. Jane Ladlow, being the Cambridge University Principal Investigator into non-invasive Assessment of Respiratory Function in Unrestrained Conscious Brachycephalic Dogs Pre and Post Upper Airway Surgery.

Dr. House is currently training veterinarians to become approved assessors to carry out respiratory function grading. Training days are being conducted and a number of veterinarians have now been appointed in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia. In conjunction with the State and Territory Member Bodies, further training will take place over the coming months. The next RFG assessment together with veterinary training will be conducted in Queensland. There will be an RFG assessment day on 31 August 2023 followed by a veterinary training day on 1 September 2023.

The response to the launch of the RFG Scheme in Australia has been excellent. The National British Bulldog Breed Council is in the process of instituting respiratory function grading as one of its health screening tests. The Bulldog Club of Queensland is also incorporating respiratory function grading into its health screening program.

Interested In Earthdog?

The Earthdog Subcommittee, assisted by the grounds staff, have proactively developed a temporary area for our members to once again conduct Earthdog Tests. This initiative has been very well received by our members.

Already this year after two tests, our dogs have gained titles at both events.

Dogs Queensland will host an Earthdog Training Day along with a ‘Come and Try Day’ for those wishing to try the sport at the Durack Showgrounds on Saturday 8 July 2023. Welcome To Zone 2 News!

I’d like to introduce myself and thank you all for allowing me to be your representative in Zone 2 on the Board of Directors for Dogs Queensland. I hope I can serve you all well and look forward to working together with you in all matters K9.

This month to start us all off, I thought I’d tell you about myself, my life experiences and what I bring and offer to the DQ BoD table.

A little (or a lot) about me …

I did not grow up in the dog world, but did own an Australian Cattle Dog of working lines that was my buddy and assistant fitness trainer growing up … he would run everywhere with me as I trained for my sports that I loved. As a kid I raced moto x and competed in an array of motorcycle sports. I participated in Scouts as a Venturer and attained my Queens Scout. I played netball and used my height for defence. I rode a Harley Davidson to Uni and the lecturers knew when I arrived by the roar!

These days, I am an All Breeds judge and have been

since May 2014. I have been in the pure bred dog world since 1997 when I purchased my first show dog, a Keeshond male who titled with ease. Since then I have bred and or owned over 120 champion Keeshonds, many with multiple BIS awards, and am honoured to have bred and shown the world record holder for the most BIS awarded in the breed, my beloved Bolte who now many of you see me with in the neuter classes as he approaches 13 years young. I have imported and exported. I have attained 8 Endurance Test titles on my Keeshonds and am currently studying for my ET licence, with an aim to assist Zone 2 to gain this discipline in the area. I have participated for fun but not trialled in obedience and agility too.

My breed for which I am known is the Keeshond, but I also bred and campaigned numerous Boxers over some 18 years and dabbled in whippets for a short time too. I have handled many breeds across the seven groups assisting friends, but nothing can take me away from my love of the Keeshond (although I do miss not having a Boxer anymore). I regularly judge in conformation and enjoy this

very much. I love the opportunity to judge some of the most beautiful dogs across our great state, the nation and of course around the world. Judging is something I have never taken for granted and try my best to always be honest and transparent in my decisions and placements, which I believe has also led me to being a more “true to the breed standard”, Keeshond breeder. My motto is, “if you cannot enjoy your day at the show, then take a break from it”!

I have moved from Sydney and the Central Coast of NSW in April 2021, to now reside in the lovely area of Hervey Bay. I came to the Bay to be near my aging parents and assist them if and when needed. Although I came to Queensland for different reasons other than to just show my dogs, I have found a real love of the area, it’s features and vastly changing landscape. I’m very glad of the move to join you all here in Zone 2 and of course, the rest of Queensland.

These days I am retired and spend my time with my partner and together we enjoy my other sport, competition clay target shooting or clay pigeon shooting as some of you know it as.

My career background that has led me to now being on the BoD for DQ is extensively involved in sports and event management, sales and marketing, in both the private and public sectors.

• My degree is in Sports Management;

• I have worked for some 12 years in local and state government in NSW in sport and recreation administration and development. I was extensively involved in the development of the NSW Companion Animal Management Plan, sporting development in Western Sydney to reduce youth crime, and the North Sydney contributions to the Sydney Olympic Games;

• A brief time in NZ in regional government saw me leading a community consultation for a year to developing Auckland as a future thriving city;

• Five years sales experience in a senior managers role with Tupperware Australia

where sales was not my only forte but training staff in skills and self-development was extremely fulfilling;

• A s most of you know I worked in marketing for Nestle Purina PetCare for ten years as the National Breeder Manager where one of my biggest legacies was the sponsorship of the Sydney Royal Dog and Cat Shows. Also the coming together of breeders and exhibitors in not only competition but a festive celebration of our companion animals, and of course to uplift the comradery with each other within our sport;

• A brief time in employment services managing some very difficult circumstances for staff and clients from some of the Central Coasts most struggling financial areas during Covid times and

• I have served on two boards previously, namely Scouts NSW and Women Sports and Recreation NSW.

I hope to use these vast collections of skills and experience to assist our zone at Board level, at club level and at event level to be heard, progress and thrive within our zone and across the state.

How can I help?

I am here to help your clubs and certainly to assist with items that you would like addressed by the Board. I have also taken on committee roles that will not only assist all DQ members but our zone too.

Thus, I have willingly taken on the role as Chair of the Marketing and PR committee. This committee will be focussing on some of our top events, admittedly, most of which are held in Zone 1, but I will be looking for opportunities to assist the abilities of our Zone 2 (and thus also Zone 3) members

to participate or how some of these events may be beneficial to also run in our Zone 2 and 3 areas. This committee will focus on such events as:

• The EKKA;

• The Paws Aid events (such as ANZAC Day shows);

• The All Dog Sports Spectacular events;

• The Dog of the Year and Puppy of the Year events;

• External public canine expo type events such as the Dog Lovers Show and

• Other internal event coordination.

I am also involved in two further committees which I feel will also assist our zone, The Junior Handler Committee and the Government and Media Liaison Committee. Firstly, the JH Committee to endeavour to assist our juniors to thrive in our zone and participate with more easy access to the State titles too. And in the Government Liaison and Media Committee to assist our members locally with issues or concerns and how DQ can assist and/

or advocate in the development of canine policy in our local government areas and the state into the future.

Zone 2 News will be a new monthly addition to The Dog World each month. I am looking for input from all our clubs and members about what’s coming up, what is great to celebrate and of course, items that we need to address. Let me know what you would like to promote about your upcoming shows and trails, club and fundraising activities, or even what you can share with other clubs or want to encourage members across the state to be apart of to grow your activities.

If there’s items you think we need to talk about more or course or clinics to conduct locally, let’s get them happening!

No Barriers To Showing

We often take for granted our ability to show and compete with our dogs, in what would be considered the usual way.

On 10 June 2023, during the judging of our specialty shows, we saw some inspirational exhibitors, showing their dogs, despite having some mobility issues themselves.

At the Cattle Dog and Kelpie Club shows, Julie McKay showed her stumpy tail cattle dog, Annie beautifully whilst using her mobility scooter. Julie also took

Annie Lure Coursing the previous weekend. This was all made possible by the use of Julie’s mobility scooter to guide Annie to the starting area.

Long-term Boxer exhibitor Lorraine Smitheringale also enjoyed showing on the day competing in Veteran Handlers with a beautiful Boxer, Agnes, owned by Kym Hooper. Lorraine was also assisted by using her mobility scooter.

Our dog world continues to be a place for inclusion and acceptance. Great work Julie and Lorraine!!!!

Cairns Canine Carnival In Review

As the sun set on a day filled with furry fun and wagging tails, the Cairns Canine Carnival, a collaboration between Guide Dogs, the Cairns Kennel Club, and the vibrant community of dog lovers, emerged as a resounding success. The event, held recently, showcased the extraordinary bond between humans and their four-legged companions while raising crucial funds to support the remarkable work of Guide Dogs.

The Cairns Kennel Club, a dedicated advocate for canine welfare, played an integral role in hosting this remarkable event. Their commitment to creating a venue that was tail-ormade for the occasion provided the perfect backdrop for a day filled with joy, laughter, and an undeniable passion for our furry friends. Their unwavering support set the stage for an unforgettable experience.

Supported by the Cairns Regional Council, the Cairns Canine Carnival has become an eagerly anticipated highlight on the local events calendar. The council’s commitment to fostering a vibrant and inclusive community shines through in their support of engaging dog-focused events. It is through their partnership that the carnival has grown into a celebration of the profound impact dogs have on our lives.

Looking back on the 2023 Cairns Canine Carnival, we can’t help but reflect on the incredible moments that made it so special. From heartwarming interactions between humans and Guide Dogs to the impressive displays of agility and talent in various competitions, the event left an indelible mark on all who attended.

Canine Ehrlichiosis

Canine Ehrlichiosis is a bacterial infection in dogs which is caused by a tick-borne bacteria Ehrlichia canis (E. canis). The primary vector is the brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus). This is not the paralysis tick.

Ticks acquire E. canis by feeding, in the larval stage, on infected canids. Once infected, the infection is transmitted by nymphs or adults when feeding. Domesticated or wild animals in the family Canidae (dogs, dingoes and foxes) are the reservoir hosts.

There have been rare instances where humans have been infected after being bitten by an infected tick. However, there have been no reported cases of infection in humans in Australia to date.

Clinical Signs

There are 3 phases of infection:

• Acute (3-4 weeks)

• Sub-clinical (months to years)

• Chronic (months to years)

Acute phase:

The incubation period is 1-3 weeks after a tick bite. This phase is characterised by non-specific clinical signs which may include:

• Fever

• Lethargy

• Enlarged lymph nodes

• Weight loss

• Discharge from the nose and eyes

• Bleeding from the nose

• Bleeding under the skin (which may appear as small spots, patches or bruising).

This phase typically lasts for 2-4 weeks.

The severity of symptoms can vary considerably between dogs.

In countries where E. canis is established and has become endemic, death is usually rare during this phase and most dogs recover although some may remain sub-clinical carriers for months or even years. However, in Australia, where the disease is spreading in a relatively naïve population, it is quite likely that there will be severe illness and high morbidity in this phase.

Sub-clinical phase

Dogs will either:

• Clear the infection

• Remain infected (although asymptomatic)

• Progress to a chronic form of the disease.

Some dogs may progress from the acute phase and become carriers. These dogs are still infected but present no symptoms. The bacteria remain in the spleen, bone marrow and white blood cells. If the dog’s immune system is compromised, this will squeeze the spleen and the bacteria may be released.

Accordingly, the disease can remain latent and the dog may still be infected for months or even years.

Chronic phase

The chronic form of the disease may not manifest itself for months or even years.

Clinical signs are similar to the acute phase but are likely to be more severe. These may include:

• Fever

• Weakness

• Weight loss

• Bleeding disorders

• Pale mucous membranes

• Eye abnormalities (corneal oedema)

• Muscle pain (poly arthritis) stiff gait

• Neurologial abnormalities

Blood tests often show severely low platelets, low

white cells and anaemia.

This form of the disease is usually fatal and further treatment is likely to have a low prospect of success. Infected dogs may also be more susceptible to secondary infections.

How does the disease spread?

Dogs do not transmit the disease directly to each other (except in the case of blood transfusion).

As the disease is not directly transmissible between dogs (by natural means), it is spread by:

• Actively infected ticks infecting uninfected dogs in new locations;

• Acutely infected dogs infecting tick populations in new locations;

• Sub-clinical and chronically infected dogs infecting tick populations in new locations

What can you do to protect your dogs and your kennel?

In this case, prevention is by far better than cure.

Prevention

The level of precaution will depend upon the risk of being bitten by a tick and the prevalence of E. canis in that area or potential exposure to dogs from an area in which E. canis is present.

If you are travelling, avoid taking your dog(s) into known infested areas unless absolutely necessary and keep an eye on State government regulations before leaving an area or crossing State lines (as these may change).

If you are located in or travelling through a tick area:

• Healthy dogs should be on an effective tick control program.

• Keep grass short and avoid taking dogs into or in close proximity to potentially tick infected areas such as bush and long grass, particularly in coastal areas.

• Avoid areas and contact with free ranging dogs (eg. dog parks and other off leash areas)

• Inspect your dogs daily for ticks and for 5-6 days after being in tick infected areas.

• Check bedding and treat with anti-parasite sprays if in a tick area.

The prevention of ehrlichiosis requires a different strategy to paralysis tick. For paralysis tick, it is important to kill any tick quickly if it attaches. In the case of ehrlichiosis, you need to prevent the dog from being bitten in the first place. It is therefore important to take precautionary measures to repel ticks in order to prevent the tick from attaching at all. Accordingly, a combination of topical and oral tick prevention is best to deal with the threat from different ticks.

There are quite a few products currently available on the market:

• Collars – Seresto®, Preventic®, Kiltix®;

• Spot-on treatments: Advantix®, Frontline®. Seresto and Advantix have been experimentally shown to prevent transmission of E. canis to dogs.

Oral products such as Simparica®, NexGard® and Bravecto® are a second line of defence. They do not prevent the dog from being bitten.

Accordingly, a combination of topical and oral tick prevention is best to prevent E. Canis and to also deal with the threat from other tick borne illness. and disease.

Follow manufacturer’s instructions and ensure the dog is not left unprotected by missing or running late with treatment.

Treatment

The earlier the infection is diagnosed and treated, the better. PCR and ELISA tests provide the most accurate diagnosis together with comprehensive blood tests. Blood tests will usually pick up abnormalities such as low platelets and mild anaemia.

Affected dogs will require veterinary treatment. It is possible to treat ehrlichiosis with Doxycycline (a tetracycline anti-biotic). Note that this treatment is not appropriate for dogs under 6 months of age. Usually, a minimum of 4 weeks will be required. Shorter treatment periods may result in sub-clinical carriers. Seronegative PCR tests will indicate if the infection has cleared.

Presence of E. canis in Australia

The first confirmed detection of E. canis in Australia was in the Kimberley region in Western Australia.

Although anecdotal reports indicate that E. canis may have been present in Australia considerably earlier than this, these are not confirmed cases. E. canis has now been detected in a number of parts of Queensland including the following Local Government Areas: Mt Isa, Doomadgee, Cloncurry and Carpentaria, and in dogs travelling through these LGAs and infected areas interstate. Infection was first detected in Townsville in December 2022 and also subsequently. Accordingly, it is highly likely that the disease may be significantly more widespread in Queensland.

Movement of Dogs

Human assisted movement of dogs is considered the most likely means of spreading E. canis. The following map shows the distribution of brown dog

tick in Australia.

So, in order to prevent transmission, it is necessary to take precautionary measures. With movement of dogs around the country, it is otherwise highly likely that this disease will become widespread.

If moving a dog from a potentially infected areas, ensure that the dog is tick treated at least 2-4 weeks prior to travel. Preferably, maintain a record of treatment for 6 months.

If you are acquiring a dog from a tick infected area, check that it has been treated for ticks and for how long prior to being transported. Consider conducting blood tests (either prior to transport or shortly after arrival and keep separate until results are received) in order to protect the rest of the dogs in the kennel.

Congratulations Ladies

Margaret Alderton, Bevly O’Hara and Judith Langton recently made the decision to retire from official club duties. In recognition of their servcie and dedication to the dog world Dogs Queensland showcases their highlights and achievements over the years.

Margaret Alderton

Margaret Alderton joined Dogs Queensland in 1970 and has been a member for 50 years.

Margaret is very proud of her contribution to the dog world and has gotten a lot of pleasure from showing and working with a number of clubs. She has enjoyed most of all, the socialisation and interaction of showing dogs in the ring.

Margaret is a life member of the Shetland Sheepdog Club of Queensland and was the Treasurer on 2 separate occasions for about 40 years. She is also a life member of the Pine Rivers Kennel Club, the Daybora Show Society and the Working Dog Club of Queensland.

She also was the chief steward/organiser for

the Daybora and Redcliffe Agricultural Shows for about 10 years.

Margaret started with Shetland Sheep dogs but showed a Briard for many years. She also handled Collies and different breeds in the Gundog Group, but her main love is the Shetland Sheep Dog. Margaret really helped other people in their journey of showing dogs mainly in group 5.

She became a familiar face around the dog show world in later years as a writer and has worked at the Ipswich Agricultural Show and the Working Dog Club. She was more than happy to accept their invitation and put her writing skills to the test. Owing to her health, Margaret’s journey has come to an end and its time goodbye.

Bevly O’Hara

Bevly OHara joined Dogs Queensland in 1976 showing British Bulldogs. With great success Bevly breed under the prefix LYDEN and participated in many shows.

Bevly also joined the British Bulldog Club in 1976 and the Ladies Kennel Club in 1979. Of which she is still a member of both clubs to date. She became the Treasurer for LKA in 1983 and held various executive positions with QBC over the years.

As her showing days came to an end, Bevly also took up writing and has enjoyed a different side of the dog world for the last 16 years.

Judith Langton

Judith Langton joined Dogs Queensland in 1980 showing her one true love, Toy Poodles.

Throughout her membership she has bred under the Prefix SILBLACTON and shown Aust Ch Silblacton Simply The Best, who in, 1995 was the first Toy Poodle to qualify for Queensland Dog of the Year, since its beginning in 1982. Her Toy Poodles went on to obtain numerous show and group awards and titles.

Judith has also been involved with the Poodle Club of Qld and is the current Vice President of the Ladies Kennel Club. In the past Judith has held the positions of President of the Southern Districts Kennel Club and Show Secretary of Qld Dog of The Year.

Judith stopped showing her Toy Poodles when her beloved husband passed away only to come back years later as a writer.

As she writes herself out of this world, Judith is retiring on an enjoyable note.

Margaret, Bevly and Judith leave behind their knowledge, devotion and passion – all of which has helped shape our dog world. We thank them for their continued service over the years and wish them all the best for the coming years.

The Bullmastiff Club of Queensland was honoured to host the recent 8th National Bullmastiff Specialty Show. After hosting the event in 2017, we didn’t expect to be doing it again back to back with a limited preparation time of only 20 months. The BMCQLD picked up the reins and ran with it! Attempting the biggest showcase of Bullmastiffs in this country with three shows over three days, a breeders poinstcore, state club challenge, a breed lecture by breed specialist Andrew Burt, and finishing with a presentation dinner and auction. Shows of this type and magnitude cannot occur without the dedication and assistance of a team of individuals committed to honouring the breed, this was a huge undertaking for our small but dedicated committee.

And what a fantastic weekend we had! 98 entries with exhibitors from all states except NT. Fabulous weather, awesome trophies and prizes, good sportsmanship and a chance to renew friendships and forge new ones. With the last National being held six years ago, this was a much needed event for us all to catch up and celebrate our magnificent breed.

Thank you to our wonderful team of breed specialist judges: Amanda Warren (UK), Meg Hamilton (NZ) and Kim Rogers (NSW) and our property class judge Stephanie Rickard (VIC).

And our amazing officials: Trevor Sully, Vicki Schneider, Deborah McLean, Cathy Cameron and Kevin Zimmerle, photographer: Patrik Berger. Thank you all for your good humour over the long days.

Huge thanks must go to our very generous corporate sponsors and bullmastiff community. Our shows were very well supported and we couldn’t have put on such an amazing event without you! The trophy and prize table for all three shows was outstanding.

Breeder Alert –

Puppy Scam Websites

Dogs Queensland has become increasingly aware of Puppy Scam Websites using legitimate Dogs Queensland Registration and Queensland Breeder Identification (BIN) Numbers to sell puppies. Dogs Queensland Registration Numbers are obtained from legitimate websites such as Dogs Queensland or DogzOnline, where they are displayed as required by the Queensland Government.

Please see the Queensland Dog Breeder Fact Sheets for regulations and guidelines for Queensland Dog Breeders.

An example of a typical scam is:

• A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet.

• The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix.

• A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry.

• Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published.

• No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website.

• The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures.

• The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.

As a breeder what can you do to avoid being an unknowing victim of a Puppy Scam:

• Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix.

• Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate.

• Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct inperson contact with you.

• Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details.

• Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.

As a buyer what can you do to avoid being a victim of a Puppy Scam:

• Verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland.

• Ensure communications are made to verified contact details.

• Meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.

• If paying online, use a credit card or PayPal where you have a degree of buyer protection.

• Check website is an established site with a website security certificate.

• Avoid websites without physical address or phone numbers.

• A sk for proof, including ANKC registration papers and veterinary health records for any puppy. Importantly you should report any suspect sites or advertising to the ACCC ScamWatch website. Please let us know about any suspect websites too by contacting Dogs Queensland on 3252 2661 or by email at info@dogsqueensland.org.au.
