President’s Message

I“'d like to bring to members’ attention a concern with an increase in the number of disputes being brought against our members in relation to ownership of dogs.

Members should familiarise themselves with the requirements of Dogs Queensland Rule 28 –28.1 Upon the sale, exchange, gift, lease, change of domicile, or other disposition of a dog or of any interest in a dog registered in the Registers of the CCCQ Ltd, an application for registration of a transfer shall be lodged by the registered owner/s with the Office of the CCCQ Ltd within thirty (30) days of the change. Such application shall be accompanied by the appropriate fee as set out in the scale of charges and must be signed personally by all partners in the ownership of the dog prior to the change. The name of the transferor is not to be shown as a part–owner of the dog unless the Application for Transfer is accompanied by an agreement to that effect, signed by the new owner. Only official CCCQ Ltd Partnership Agreement Forms are to be used. In the case of a Limited Register dog an Official CCCQ Ltd Limited Register Agreement statement that the purchaser understands the effect of the Limited Register is to be provided.

The transferor shall provide the new owner with a signed “Change of Microchip Ownership” form to allow registration of the new owner’s details on a recognised Registry in Australia.

In a nutshell, this means, under the terms of our rules, once a dog has been placed in a new home, regardless of the circumstances, ie “sale, exchange, gift or lease, change of domicile or other disposition of the dog”, the registration papers must be transferred to the new owner. The original owner is responsible for the transfer of the dog’s

registration and payment of the fee. This must be instigated within 30 days of the date the dog leaves the original owner.

The new owner must be provided with a signed “Change of Microchip Ownership” form.

It is important that the Register and microchip records are kept up to date.

From 1/5/22 Dogs Queensland removed the provision for “Breeder’s Terms” from the Rules.

It is therefore quite concerning when I see advertisements offering to sell dogs and puppies at a reduced price or a gift as part of a “Guardian program”.

Under our rules, such “Guardian” arrangements where there is no transfer of registration and/or microchip to the new owner, is clearly in breach of Rule 28 and could lead to a subsequent ownership dispute.

Breeders do have the option to keep dogs in partnership with the new owner and lodge the partnership agreement with Dogs Queensland.

There are a number of our members with significant numbers of dogs registered in their name. This may be for a number of reasons including that one or more of these dogs no longer reside at that address. We are endeavouring to contact members to ensure dogs are transferred to new owners. We encourage members to contact Dogs Queensland directly to ask for a list of dogs currently registered in their name. This will assist them to update their records and will also reduce the possibility of an ownership dispute in the future.

Board Notes – July 2024

ITALIAN GREYHOUND

Italian Greyhounds ... are affectionate, loyal, and gentle, making them great companions for individuals and families. They are also known for their intelligence and athleticism.

Tom WeigandThe Winning Image

The Italian Greyhound is an exceptional toy breed with a charming, affectionate, and amusing personality. These tiny hounds have the ability to completely captivate their owners!

HISTORY OF THE ITALIAN GREYHOUND

Hounds similar to Italian Greyhounds are believed to have originated in Egypt around 3,000BC. Mummified remains have been excavated from the tombs of the Pharaoh’s in the Valley of Kings at Luxor. It is believed that the Romans brought the hounds to the Mediterranean around 600 BC. Archaeologists have discovered art works and carvings from this period and bones of the small hounds.

In 79 AD, Mount Vesuvius erupted and obliterated the ancient Roman resort town of Pompeii. In the lava flow the remains of a petite hound were discovered. It is thought that the Latin inscription “Cave Canem” or Beware of the Dog, which was found on houses of that period, was not a warning but a reminder not to step on the miniature hound. In 48 BC Queen Cleopatra presented Julius Caesar with Italian Greyhound puppies after he had conquered Egypt.

The Middle Ages saw the Italian Greyhound in Southern Europe. Because of its popularity in Italy it became known as the Italian Greyhound and reached its height of popularity in the 17th Century. The hounds appeared in European royal houses and became a decoration of aristocratic salons. Often seen with their titled owners including; Mary Queen of Scots 1542-87, Princess Anne of Denmark 1574-1619, Charles 1 160049, Queen Victoria 1819-1901 and Frederick the Great of Prussia 1712-86 whose Italian Greyhound accompanied him in his military campaigns. Catherine the Great of Russia 1729-96 had her favourite Italian Greyhound “Zemira” buried in Peterhof Park and a porcelain figurine of the hound kept in the Grand Hall of the Peterhof Palace.

Italian Greyhounds can be seen in the paintings of Ambrogio Giotto 1267-1337, Rogier Van der Weyden 1399-1464, Hans Memling 1440-94, Hieronymus Bosch 1450-1516, Gerard David 1460-1523, Vittore Carpaccio 1472-1526, Sir Anthony Van Dyck 15991641, Sir Joshua Reynolds 1723-92, William Blake

1757-1827. Pierre Jukes Menè 1810-77 made several bronze sculptures of Italian Greyhounds. The artist Theodor Kärner 1884-1966 who worked for Rosenthal of Germany created some beautifully detailed figures of Italian Greyhounds in porcelain.

Hounds are dogs that were originally bred to hunt and the Italian Greyhound has a strong instinct to chase and hunt. The breed is the smallest of the family of sighthounds or gazehounds (dogs that hunt by sight). It is thought that they were originally bred to hunt small game as well as being a companion hound. Its larger cousin the Whippet is a relatively new breed that originated in England in the 19th Century.

Italian Greyhounds were first shown in England at the Birmingham Dog Show in 1860 and in Australia at the Sydney Royal Show in 1868. The American Kennel Club registered the first Italian Greyhound in 1886.

In St Petersburg, Russia, there is now an annual holiday held on the 27 July in honour of the Russian Empress Catherine’s Italian Greyhound “Zemira”. It’s held in the grounds of the Grand Cascade, one of the main fountains of the Russian Versailles. A contest is held to find the most beautiful hound, which is presented with an award in the Throne Room of the Grand Peterhof Palace.

The Italian Greyhound is known in Germany as the Italianisches “Windspiel” or Toy of the Wind. In

Italy it’s a Piccolo Levriero Italiano and in Sweden an Italiensk Vinthund.

THE ITALIAN GREYHOUND

The Italian Greyhound is a greyhound in miniature. It is graceful and loving and has a variety of wonderful personality traits.

The breed is known for its lively, friendly personality and quickness to action. They have a very high prey drive and are prone to chasing small, fast-moving animals when outdoors.

The Italian Greyhound is aristocratic and has an elegant appearance with a slight arch over the loin and graceful and quick movement. This breed is intelligent, affectionate and vivacious and may appear aloof. They may be reluctant to be handled by strangers, but not to the point of being overly shy.

The head is long, flat, narrow skull with a slight stop. The jaws are strong with a perfect, regular and complete scissor bite. It has a rose shaped

ear and long gracefully arched neck. The eyes are rather large, bright and full of expression and the coat is short, fine and glossy with fine and supple skin. The chest should be deep and narrow and the back slightly arched over the loin.

Italian Greyhounds should move with a high stepping and free action and with propulsion from behind. Ideally the foreleg is lifted almost parallel to the ground. The head should be held high and the tail should be long and fine, set low and carried low.

The feet should be hare feet; a long oval foot with two middle toes longer than the others. A wellbalanced Italian Greyhound should stand between 32-38cms (12.5 and 15 inches) high and the ideal weight should be 3.6-4.5kg (8-10 lbs).

Common coat colors include black, blue, cream, fawn, red, white or any of these colours broken with white. White dogs may be broken with one of these colours. Black or blue with tan markings or brindle are not acceptable.

Tom WeigandThe Winning Image

Overall, the Italian Greyhound should be a sleek, graceful, and well-proportioned dog. It should appear fit and energetic and demonstrate the agility, speed and grace that a good, working hound should possess. The overall impression should be of a lively and active dog that is eager to please.

PERSONALITY OF AN ITALIAN GREYHOUND

The personality of an Italian Greyhound is unlike any other breed.

They are cat-like in the respect that they enjoy sunbathing. Care should be taken that your IG does not become sunburned or overheated. A picnicstyle blanket and chew toy laid out in the warmth of the sunshine in your back yard is an IG's idea of heaven.

Italian Greyhounds like to be up on high spots in your house (such as back of chairs, sofas and even on top of the dining room table). If there is a window view they are especially thrilled. Care should be taken with puppies and young adults

that they are not given the opportunity to attempt daredevil stunts off the back of such things!

Getting wet is usually avoided by IGs (unless by choice) and they will refuse to do any "business" outside when raining. Some owners have built little area shelters to protect their pets from rain. This keeps the house protected from iggy (affectionate, short term for Italian Greyhound) accidents. If the grass is wet in the morning, the sidewalk will do for an IG. They are creatures of comfort. If an occasional accident in the house is unacceptable to you, the IG may not be the breed for you. Some owners have resorted to the use of a litter box. This is one breed of dog that CAN be litter box trained (like a cat). The IG litter box is larger than the kitty type and is usually lined with newspapers. When the litter box is used, training is relatively easy and accidents are rare. Litter boxes are NOT necessary to successful training, however.

These little hounds are masters at twisting owners around their paws. As a result, IGs can become spoiled-rotten rapidly and can turn into rulers of

Tom

the house! Don't forget to teach them what "no" means. However, they do prefer to be companion and friend, but not master and hound. If you are looking for a breed that will obey your every command, the IG is NOT the breed for you. They are very adept at getting what they want and can be persistent. Be prepared to give in on many issues because they are masters at laying a guilt trip!

Curiosity and the Italian Greyhound go well together. IGs love to be in, around and on top of anything that they find interesting. If an IG decides that an object is edible he will eat it! Care should be taken to make sure that they do not get into too much trouble or into danger.

Lounging in beds, preferably under covers is a favourite pastime. Sharing the bed with you is always the best! Keeping the couch warm occupies

a lot of their time. Care must be taken to not sit on a hidden IG! If you don't like sharing your bed, this may not be the breed for you.

Italian Greyhounds do love "dog company" and can get along well with other canine friends. HOWEVER, care must be taken when introducing an IG to larger dogs. A big dog can accidentally hurt an Italian Greyhound. IG's do not realize their own small size, so it is up to owners to protect them from themselves.

Cats can also be good companions to Italian Greyhounds. Many owners report IGs and cats romping merrily together through the house. One moment the IG will be racing after a cat and in the twinkling of an eye the cat will be chasing the dog! It is not uncommon to find cat(s) and IG(s) curled up together for an afternoon nap in the warmth of the sun.

Tom WeigandThe Winning Image

Some Italian Greyhounds are more active than others. Stuffed toys are a favourite plaything. While some IGs take good care of their possessions, others have been known to shred toy stuffing all over the house! Some IG's find the game of throw and fetch to be extremely entertaining.

Outdoor activities can include digging small (or large) holes, chasing squirrels or birds and occasionally clipping grass (which then makes them sick!). While IG's prefer the company of people while outdoors, they will investigate your FENCED back yard by themselves. An IG SHOULD NOT be left outside while you are gone. They are NOT outdoor dogs!

Your privacy will be a long forgotten memory once an IG owns you! You will find that no where in your house is there a place to hide from this inquisitive little personality. You will be followed everywhere...

including the bathroom. Dinnertime is of special interest to IGs. Care should be taken in not tripping over them.

If you decide this is the breed for you, acquiring a second IG is a delightful option (once you've been properly trained by the first, that is!). IG's are pack orientated hounds. This means that they will follow pack order. If one IG is injured or sick, it is not unknown for a "pack" to hurt or possibly kill the injured/sick IG.

Which makes a better pet...a male or a female? Female Italian Greyhounds are a little "standoffish". They are more independent and can even be a bit uppity at times. If you have more than one IG in your house, the female will ALWAYS be the leader of the house. Males are much more apt to cuddle and make ideal lap warmers. Males also seem to show their affection by keeping close.

Tom Weigand

Most owners find that male IG's are easier and faster to housetrain than females. If housetrained correctly and neutered, a male IG will not lift his leg in your house.

HEALTH AND GROOMING

When it comes to health, the Italian Greyhound is generally a robust and healthy breed. However, like all dogs, they are prone to certain health issues, including dental problems and musculoskeletal issues.

They are generally a healthy breed and can live 13 to 15 years if properly cared for. That doesn’t mean they aren’t at risk for some more common health conditions, but the biggest risk to an Italian greyhound is their small size and fine bones. Many Italian greyhounds think they are the biggest of the sighthounds rather than the smallest so they tend to go after anything and everything. This can lead to behaviors like jumping out of people’s arms which can often lead to one of the biggest health problems Italian Greyhounds face: broken bones. Luckily, this is a fairly preventable health risk.

who can provide them with the love, exercise, and attention they need.

Some of the common conditions seen in this breed include dental problems, patellar luxation, progressive retinal atrophy, and allergies.

In terms of grooming, the Italian Greyhound’s short coat is easy to maintain. Weekly brushing will help keep their coat shiny and free from loose hair. They are also known to be somewhat prone to dental issues, so regular teeth brushing is important to maintain good oral health. Additionally, their nails should be trimmed regularly, and ears should be checked and cleaned to prevent any infections.

Paying attention to health and grooming will help ensure that your Italian Greyhound remains healthy and happy for years to come.

SUITABILITY

Italian Greyhounds are generally good dogs. They are affectionate, loyal, and gentle, making them great companions for individuals and families. They are also known for their intelligence and athleticism. Italian Greyhounds may have a high prey drive and are sensitive to cold, so they require some special care and attention. Overall, they make wonderful pets for the right owner

Living with an Italian Greyhound can be a delightful experience for families. Their affectionate and gentle nature makes them well-suited for households with children, particularly older kids who understand the importance of being gentle with smaller dogs. They enjoy being part of a pack and bond closely with their family members.

Their small size makes them well-suited for apartment living, but they also appreciate outdoor activities. Families who enjoy walks, jogs, or outdoor adventures will find a willing and energetic companion in the Italian Greyhound. It is important to note that their thin coat and low body fat make them sensitive to extreme temperatures, so care should be taken in very cold or hot climates. Overall, Italian Greyhounds bring a blend of affection, energy, and adaptability that can make them a wonderful addition to a loving family environment.

Embracing the Italian Greyhound offers an opportunity to enrich your life with the boundless warmth and delights that this breed has to offer, ensuring a harmonious and joyous companionship for many years to come.

Rehoming Retired Breeders

Breeding dogs are an essential part of a breeding program to produce dogs that are beautiful, functional, and sound in mind and body for generation after generation. It is important to consider all stages of life in a breeding program and it’s easy to focus on the puppy phase and whelping, however, when a breeding dog reaches the end of their breeding life due to age, health reasons or your breeding program is heading in a different direction – what is the plan?

Dogs are retired from breeding for many reasons. They include:

• Age

• Genetic, physical or behavioural health

• Change of direction within a breeding program. It would be great to keep them all but unfortunately, dogs in your breeding program may need to be re-homed. Some breeders will have the time and capacity to keep their retired breeders, however, this may not be the case for everyone due to:

• Council restrictions on the number of dogs you can house

• Needing to make room for new breeding stock

• Facility space and time to care and manage extra dogs

• Personal circumstances that prevent the keeping of multiple dogs

What thought have you given to how breeding dogs are incorporating into your handling, socialising and training regimes?

Studies on retired breeding dogs identified the following behaviours that were detrimental to the success of the dog adapting to pet homes:

• Lack of socialisation

• Not toilet trained

• Basic obedience training non existent

How can you set up your breeding dogs for success at retirement?

What about euthanasia?

Establishing criteria for rehoming retired breeding dogs is essential for the welfare of the dog. If the dog has a severe or poor prognosis, physical or behavioural health issues that will result in ongoing poor quality of life, euthanasia may be a consideration. Always discuss your options with your vet and as stated in the Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines for Breeding Dogs and their Progeny, euthanasia should not be used as a routine means of managing unwanted breeding dogs and progeny and must be done humanly and carried out by a veterinarian.

• Social interactions – people and other dogs

• Exercise – outdoor yards, leash walks and sports

• Enrichment – toys, chew items, scents and sounds

• Training – leash walking and basic obedience skills (e.g. sit, come and stay)

• Desexing

• Ongoing socialisation – people, places, objects and sounds

Preparation for rehoming later in life should begin during puppy-hood for all dogs and continue until rehoming. Socialization, low stress handling, training, enrichment, interventions, acclimation to home environment through kennel design and management and evaluations are key.

CHECKLIST FOR SUCESSFUL REHOMING OF THE RETIRED BREEDING DOG

Socialise with other pets, people and places

Provide enrichment through all life stages

Ensure medically sound and desexed

Establish leash training and basic obedience commands (Come, Sit, Stay)

Encourage toilet training where possible

Provide support to new owners of retired breeders to ensure a smooth transition

All dogs should be supported in their transition to a new home, and some will require extra support and intervention for success

TAKE HOME MESSAGE

Successful retirement comes from setting dogs up early by maintaining behavioural and mental wellness throughout their life.

A 'tail' of adopting from a breeder

– Dr. Christopher Robertson Australia, by and large, is known for accepting many peoples from around the world. So why should this not be the case with our fourlegged friends where they come to us from different sources. In particular I am talking about my experience of adopting a dog from a breeder and what surprises it might hold for prospective owners.

Now, upfront we have only adopted from one breeder, but have done this three times, with the breed of Fox Terriers. However, we were fortunate to have found a breeder who had developed her breeding ethics and would only breed twice from any female dog. She has also rehomed Fox Terriers from her local pound – we even took one of those dogs, Willow was her name.

Our current female, Abbey Road, who is nearly ten (10) had only been breed once. This limitation on breeding was due to a genetic anomaly of short-tail syndrome appearing in her first litter, which seems to jump a generation or two.

Now what would you expect with a dog from a

breeder? Most will be kennel dogs. However, I do not mean that in a negative context. What I mean is that if you have them for a house pet they will likely need a little house training and guidance, among other things. Yet on the positive side the animals, if the breeder is reputable, will be in great health, fit and ready to look for a companion home for life.

For us, Abbey Road (at 3 and 1/2 years old) fortunately picked up house training in less than a week or so. Actually in two weeks it had seemed she had been with us all our lives. This was, of course despite our other Fox Terrier, Mycroft, whom we got as a puppy, spending the previous two years attempting to train us to suit his needs!

Now getting a breeding dog means that you might uncover all soughts of mysteries. With us not only did we get a patient, friendly dog, that the breeder was able to arrange desexing for us, we had a

A young Abbey Road.

younger dog that was able to be walked.

If anything Abbey’s patient nature was helpful when putting up with our other Fox Terrier, Mycroft, who was and is still full on, even at the age of nearly 10. We had gotten him as a puppy from Yeppoon and fortuitously he was two weeks older than Abbey.

Now previously I mentioned the word “mystery.” For us, it was going through each respective dog’s Pedigree papers. We knew Mycroft’s family tree had one side descended out of the USA, but to our surprise both Mycroft and Abbey Road shared the one Great, Great, Great Grandfather. I suppose that with the Fox Terrier world being relatively small in Australia compared to other breeds, we really should not have been surprised.

Now we have had Abbey for around 6 and 1/2 years and remembering back, one of the biggest training items centred around meal time. Being a kennel dog and being fed around others was, “Eat as much as you can, while it is there.” This methodology did not sit well, as when she had vacuumed her food, she set about moving in on Mycroft’s food. Fur tended to fly!

With this issue there were in fact two items we needed to address: slow her food consumption down; and stop the confrontations at meal time. The first item was addressed by a special feeding bowl we obtained that had high raised plastic elements to it that makes a dog work around these points when eating and generally slows their rate of food consumption.

We then split them up at meal time, – one in the kitchen and the other in a nearby room. We followed the advice given and ensured whenever food or another treat was on offer it was given to the first dog there – Mycroft. This action also paid dividends with good behaviour over time, ensuring the pack status quo is maintained. Of course this was aided by Abbey, having in general, a placid nature.

Two important interrelated points of note follow here. Our dogs are house dogs, they roam around the house and yard at will and, honestly, often fall asleep on the leather couches or beds. Secondly, each dog, with new found freedoms, will develop a personality of likes, dislikes and above all

preferences. In fact it can be a voyage of discovery for everyone in the family unit - especially the owners.

For example, very quickly Abbey picked up the meaning of the word, “Walk”, followed by the sound of a lead being picked up, and the enjoyable bit that follows. Even now if one puts shoes on, there is a need for Abbey to wind down her anticipation. She does this, by beating up her toy teddy bear or other various stuffed toys.

It was not long after we got Abbey, under the instruction of Mycroft, that she learned that first up every morning you must do a “yard patrol” to check what has been through the yard at night. And, importantly to chase any birds that might be lingering if the lawns have recently been mowed. Such actions are a good sign of belonging and understanding the bounds under which they have come to live. Plus, they were beginning to behave as a small cohesive pack. They do, after all, have their breeding origins as hunting dogs. It is important to remember to make your yard native animal proof for lizards and snakes.

I cannot stress enough to obtain as much information (including general, background and current) from a breeder about your dog, and for that matter about the breeder. In the past we had rehomed another Fox Terrier named Circles from the same breeder and told we were her 5th owner. This ownership change was a lot of

A cool dip after this year's Million Paws Walk.

disruption in her life. So settling her into a residential situation did take a lot of patience and a bit more training. However, all worked out well.

Well that is a very brief outline of our experience in adopting dogs from a breeder. Yes, they do make great pets and they do settle down. The good part

is they are used to other dogs being around.

As a by-mention we would have adopted a male dog from the breeder, but at the time there were none available so we opted for a puppy. With two male Fox Terriers there tends to be ongoing behavioural domination issues. So one must be prepared to accept what dogs are available, with consideration of the broader understanding of how the animals will fit and interact in together.

And what of costs? Generally speaking, you get a dog with a pedigree at a very low cost. For us, the breeder was such a responsible person all it cost was to desex the animal.

Honesty, to us we do not care whether our dogs have pedigrees or not, they are above all a firm part of the family. Obtaining a dog after it has completed its breeding life is a great and rewarding way to bring a dog into your life, that has contributed to the ongoing success of the particular breed. The whole exercise becomes a wonderful ongoing learning experience all round.

Abbey Road – her favourite place.

Breeder Alert –Puppy Scam Websites

Dogs Queensland has become increasingly aware of Puppy Scam Websites using legitimate Dogs Queensland Registration and Queensland Breeder Identification (BIN) Numbers to sell puppies. Dogs Queensland Registration Numbers are obtained from legitimate websites such as Dogs Queensland or DogzOnline, where they are displayed as required by the Queensland Government.

Please see the Queensland Dog Breeder Fact Sheets for regulations and guidelines for Queensland Dog Breeders.

An example of a typical scam is:

• A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet.

• The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix.

• A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry.

• Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published.

• No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website.

• The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures.

• The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.

As a breeder what can you do to avoid being an unknowing victim of a Puppy Scam:

• Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix.

• Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate.

• Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct inperson contact with you.

• Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details.

• Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.

As a buyer what can you do to avoid being a victim of a Puppy Scam:

• Verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland.

• Ensure communications are made to verified contact details.

• Meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.

• If paying online, use a credit card or PayPal where you have a degree of buyer protection.

• Check website is an established site with a website security certificate.

• Avoid websites without physical address or phone numbers.

• Ask for proof, including ANKC registration papers and veterinary health records for any puppy. Importantly you should report any suspect sites or advertising to the ACCC ScamWatch website. Please let us know about any suspect websites too by contacting Dogs Queensland on 3252 2661 or by email at info@dogsqueensland.org.au

Weight Pull

– Karen Gordon

"History was made today in QLD!

5 Qualifiers In Weight Pull!!

Huge congratulations to the dogs and owners (who worked equally as hard convincing their dogs they could from afar) who qualified today and are on their way to earning their WWPD title! Weight pull isn’t new in Queensland but the ability to earn titles is!!

We're all grateful that the entry of dogs was not big enough to require the defib on Leah who was experiencing the front line of Weight Pull for the first time. Between her fist pumping and her heart racing at the time on the stop watch, we don't know who was more excited and nervous about the moment – Leah or the exhibitor!

A big thank you to Greg Brooks for identifying and fixing an issue we had with the cart!! A massive

"Doc" – Rottweiler having only tried Weight Pull for the first time the day before with the Alaskan Malamute and Siberian Husky Social Club of QLD at their training day.

thank you to the dedicated team of committee and workers Diarmuid, Fiona, Maggie, Karen, Leah, Nic and Paula who have been there from the start, laying the track in 2019, covid stopping us for a couple of years to today and a big thank you to our judge who has been supportive from day 1, Lisa Litfin!

The wonderful Penny Parker has weaved her magic again and photos from today are available! Thank you Penny for all your hard work capturing the dogs and their owners enjoyment and fun!

To view photos please go to Penny’s website https://pennyparker.smugmug.com/Weight-Pull/ Weight-pull-26th-May-2024

To all the competitors without you, this would still be a pipe dream. Thank you for entering!"

More images, courtesy of Penny Parker appear on the following page.

Crowley and "Ivy" – American

"Molly" – Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Molly and CK were the two lightest dogs on the day just making it past the minimum 15kg requirement to enter.

"Neills" – Briard. Winning Highest Weight Pulled and Highest Weight to Weight Ratio for the trial having pulled 610kg and Neills still had more in the tank!

The Pawfect Reason To Smile

As twilight settled itself upon the showgrounds and darkness followed close behind, the barks of other dogs and the bright lights of the show grounds created a cacophony of sound and light. I leaned back in my folding chair, watching Archie, my Rough Collie, as he let out a soft whine. His black and white fur shimmered in the fading light, and his brown eyes darted around, taking in everything that was happening around him. Archie was a ball of energy, always eager to please, and tonight, he was especially excited. We were here for the Scent Work Trials, and I was determined to complete our last element search in novice.

Although we had only started the sport late the previous year Archie had managed to earn his Scent Work Title in Novice. Containers were both Archie’s and I least favourite element, having failed it a few times. I was determined that tonight we would qualify. Archie worked beautifully when there were no distractions however he was also my stud dog and had other things on his mind.

Archie had a sense of humour and made me laugh almost every day. His antics, sweet temperament and fun-loving disposition were a recipe for hilarity. As I let my gaze linger on the far side of the show grounds, I noticed my friend coming towards us waving a qualifying card, and a smile was stretched across her face. I returned her smile – Meika had once again done her proud. Archie let out a bark and thumped his tail as he watched me wave back at my friend. He had picked up on my excitement and happiness and was now eager to get out and have his turn.

After congratulating my friend, I let Archie out of his crate. ‘Perhaps a walk may help settle him’

I mused. Moments later Archie let off a serious of barks before sniffing the tree we had come to stand under. He whined and brushed up against me – I knew he was growing restless and was ready to go home. This was the time when he was usually given dinner and as I quickly glanced at my watch, I chuckled to myself. Not only would he have had dinner, but he would be curled up on his bed dreaming about the day he had. Suddenly the call for briefing for novice containers rang out and I hastily placed Archie back in his crate. I knew we would be having our turn after listening to the judge’s instructions.

Grabbing my treat bag, I belted it to my waist making sure that I had plenty of treats. I unzipped Archie’s crate, and he eagerly came out sniffing the air before letting out a few gentle woofs. Molly the Poodle cross whined as she stared at Archie, her sweet face peering through her crate. Archie sniffed and touched her nose before he turned his attention

to Meika. It seemed as if he was announcing to them that it was now his turn. I smiled and shook my head patting my leg and calling him to get his attention. Archie needed no further encouragement as he strutted from under the marquee. I heard my friend laugh, she too found his antics amusing.

We waited our turn – Archie had begun to move impatiently knowing that his run was next. I tried to settle him, but it was becoming a lost cause. He wanted to quickly do his turn and go home. It had been a long afternoon and now it was well into evening. Archie was tired, hungry, and missing home.

The steward motioned us forward and we entered the room. Two rows of pink containers sat not far from us. I gave a brief smile to my instructor as she was helping as a steward. Archie let off some barks as if telling everyone to hurry up! I attempted to calm him telling him he now had to work. He pranced around nudging me to get the run over and done with.

The judge gave us our instructions and I gave Archie the signal and command to ‘find.’ He rushed towards the boxes his tail held high. He sniffed and pawed the first box. I frowned I knew he was not even trying. I again told him to ‘find.’ Archie went to each box pawing and knocking it aside with his nose. In affect he was telling me that ‘this one was it; the next one was it’ and so on. I groaned inwardly and my instructor’s words ran through my mind. When Archie was not working, I would have to reset him and make him do the run again. I politely asked the judge if I could take him out of the search area before bringing

him back in. She smiled and nodded her consent. I took Archie outside of the start cones and knelt beside him. He barked triumphantly thinking he had fooled me and was going home. I ruffled his coat and whispered that if he found the correct box then we could go home.

Time was passing. Searches had a time limit, and we were quickly running out. He let out a soft bark and licked the tip of my nose, and I knew he was ready to give it another crack. Taking a breath I once again gave him the command to ‘find.’ Archie leapt forward this time smelling each box. ‘Thank goodness’ I thought to myself. We passed each container before Archie paused at one, he pawed at it before looking up at me. This was his signal that he had found the scent. I called ‘alert’ earning a confirmation response from the judge. Relief swept over me, and I gave Archie his treat.

The judge commended me on my patience as I was handed my qualifying card and ribbon. Archie let out a series of barks as if boasting that he knew where it was all along. ‘We can go home now buddy’ I told him. He pranced and twirled as we headed out of the room. I laughed and shook my head – we finally had passed our final container search in novice and Archie had added a dash of humour.

CANINE ZODIAC SIGNS

Astrologer Michele Finey provides an insight into the temperament of our canine friends.

Zodiac signs are not constellations. The 12 signs are 30 degrees in size, and set by the SunEarth relationship; the equinoxes, in March and September, and the solstices in June and December. These points start the four cardinal signs, Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. The Sun doesn’t change signs at midnight, which is why sometimes you will see a slight variation in the dates for cusps.

If you, or your canine friend were born on a cusp, you need to know the time and location of birth to work out the correct Sun sign. In truth though, the Sun sign is only one of the many planets astrologers examine. If your dog behaves like a Gemini, but they were born in October, they probably have a lot of other planets in Gemini.

Cancerian dogs are moody and sensitive creatures and have been known to howl at the full moon. Like their Taurus cousins, this pup loves food and can be prone to weight gain. Swimming is an excellent exercise for these dogs as they usually love water. They could become insecure if left home alone for extended periods.

When visitors drop by, he will only let people enter on his terms. This dog will insist on being the leader of the pack, but if you let him have his way, aggressive behaviour can result. His bark is probably worse than his bite, but to keep him in control, you must be the top dog in this relationship.

Leo dogs are show dogs. They love nothing more than parading about displaying their many talents. Groom your Leo dog regularly and they will be a loyal companion. Praise is important too. They will not appreciate other dogs on their turf and will insist on being leader of the pack, so discipline is important.

TAURUS

The Taurus dog just loves food, and for this reason, is prone to weight gain. The “bull-dog” is usually stocky in build and has been known to stomp their foot when they do not get a second helping. Loyal in the extreme, they have a big heart and will form a close attachment to you and to their toys. This is a very tactile pooch who loves pats and cuddles.

eager to please and learn quickly. Your Virgo pooch won’t mind being left alone when you are at work and will gladly do chores like fetching the morning paper, or your slippers. Don’t criticise your Virgo dog or they will sulk. Make sure you give them a treat now and then to show your appreciation.

The Gemini dog is a perennial mischief-maker. They want to investigate everything. Geminis get bored easily so a playmate will help. This is a very intelligent dog with an extensive vocabulary. They need plenty of variety, including different walking tracks and smells. This pooch is easy to train and will do tricks.

appearance and particular about their surroundings. They adore being groomed and pampered, and will happily wear a stylish dog coat. They won’t roll around in muddy puddles and they dislike being rained on. This is a sociable dog who makes friends easily, whether canine, feline or human.

SCORPIO

24 OCTOBER – 22 NOVEMBER

This dog is intense and passionate and has certain likes and dislikes. If they don’t like Uncle Frank, then you had better warn him not to visit. Scorpio dogs are loyal and very protective and have a sixth sense about people, so you can rely on them to guard you and your possessions. A playmate will help relieve tension and stop them humping the couch.

mannerisms that will keep you amused for hours. Don’t laugh too hard or they will develop a complex. This pooch enjoys human and dog company, but also likes their own space. They're high minded and very clever and will outwit you every time.

SAGITTARIUS

23 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER

Sagittarian dogs are escape artists. Staring at four fences all day, no matter how big your yard, will never fulfil their need for excitement and adventure. This dog is boisterous and can be accident prone. The Sagittarian pooch loves nothing better than a trip in the c-a-r and will excel at ball sports and Frisbee.

PISCES

time. This dog can sometimes behave strangely and has been known to chase shadows, clouds and rainbows. Pisces pups are sensitive and can quiver and shake during thunderstorms. They are eager to please and will know just when you need a puppy cuddle. If you are looking for a guard dog, try another sign.

they're the leader of the pack, so discipline and training are very important. Thankfully, these dogs usually respect human authority and will obey commands. The Capricorn dog is territorial and makes an excellent watchdog who will patrol your entrances and doorways.
