D“ogs Queensland, like most other member organisations, has a Complaints Process when there is some form of disagreement involving the conduct of a member or members or a breach of the Rules and/or Code of Ethics.
This can be a very involved process and I’d like to provide some simple explanations and dispel some common misunderstandings in relation to the process.
The Complaints process can be found in the Dogs Queensland Rules Appendix 5 (page 84).
To explain the process in simple terms, there are stages of the process.
• Complaint received by the office – the complaint must contain all relevant details including the rules that the complainant believes have been broken and a Statutory Declaration needs to be completed and evidence provided. A complaint fee must be paid at the time of filing of the complaint.
• The complaint is sent to the respondent in order to provide the opportunity to respond to the allegations
• The complainant then has the opportunity to submit a reply (if any).
In order to allow the parties sufficient time to prepare the documentation and supporting evidence, this part of the process can take many weeks to complete.
Once the above has been completed, the complaint is then forwarded to an independent Complaints Liaison Officer to assess.
Following this independent assessment, it is all forwarded to three Dogs Queensland members who are on the “Special Members list”. These members are nominated by affiliated clubs and are approved by the Board of Directors. The Special Members also assess the complaint and either agree with the finding of the Complaints Liaison Officer or disagree with the finding. The majority will decide on the next step in the process and whether the matter should be referred to a Breaches Hearing.
If the finding is that the matter should be scheduled
for a Breaches Hearing, the General Manager schedules a hearing and convenes a suitable panel. The panel will consist of three persons, one a Chairperson and two Dogs Queensland members from the Special Members list. The Chairperson conducts the hearing and provides a report on the findings and the decision of the Panel.
There is also an opportunity to appeal the decision of the Breaches Panel on specific grounds.
This entire process may be lengthy and, in some cases, stressful for those involved. It is also very time-consuming. Complaints must not be vexatious, frivolous, misleading or malicious.
The Board of Directors is independent of the breaches panel process. The Board of Directors may be notified of the outcome but does not make the decision. Nor does the Board approve or disapprove of the findings or the outcome.
The Board of Directors does have jurisdiction to consider matters in certain circumstances, particularly if the matter is very serious and could have an adverse impact upon the organisation. In some cases, action may be necessary in order to protect the interests of the organisation.
The CCCQ Ltd, does have powers to make Inquiry under Rule 75 and to take action for breaches of the Rules and/or Code of Ethics.
A considerable number of complaints involve inappropriate comments at or following events and/ or breach of the Social Media Policy. So remember, when commenting on Social Media, in the ring or ringside, consider the following:-
“Before you speak ask yourself if what you are going to say is true, is appropriate, is necessary, is helpful. If the answer is no, maybe what you are about to say should be left unsaid.

"Devoted – Discerning – Loyal. The Manchester is a Terrier, and as such, can be lively and alert when is suits them, otherwise they will most likely be on the couch next to you, more often than not, under a blanket.
Manchester Terriers, or Mannies as they are affectionally known, are believed to be one of the oldest Terrier breeds, used in the development of other more recognisable breeds in today’s society. The most famous Manchester, Jack Black, was one of the Royal Ratcatchers around the 1850s, doing what the breed was designed to do – hunt small vermin – mainly rats and rabbits – something they still excel at in modern times. The breed has faced extinction more than once, and even today they appear on The Kennel Clubs (United Kingdom) Vulnerable Breeds List.
When considering a dog, please realise that you are taking it on for its lifetime. In Manchester terms, this means 12-15 years on average, so it’s important you can, and are prepared to, love your Mannie for a long time.
It is important to remember that, like humans, any breed and any animal can have individual health issues. Manchesters are only one of many breeds that have in the past been susceptible to Von Willebrands Disease (vWD). With select breeding programs and testing, this is not often seen now. If you need to know more, make sure you ask breeders about this. Manchesters need exercise, whether that be out for walks, runs with human or dog friends, doing laps of the back yard (otherwise known as zoomies), or training for sports. At least ½ an hour per day of decent exercise is a good minimum.
Devoted – Discerning – Loyal. The Manchester is a Terrier, and as such, can be lively and alert when is suits them, otherwise they will most likely be on the couch next to you, more often than not, under a blanket. They are happy to go running, camping, competing, or adventuring with you, just as much as they are happy snuggling, smooching and having cuddles with you – the common theme here being ‘WITH YOU’. They are very loyal to their humans, and protective of their homes to any threat, real or perceived. As such, Manchesters will bark at any sound they deem strange, or when they are bored. They are discerning with strangers so
require extensive socialisation when young, and proper introductions when adults. A Manchester needs to come to the human, not the other way around. As soon as puppy vaccinations are done, it’s important to expose your puppy to positive social experiences, people, places, sounds, animals and other dogs of all breeds and sizes. This will set them up well for life.
Manchesters have above average intelligence, and are headstrong and creative, so it’s important to keep their mind exercised or they will devise their own entertainment. They excel at brainteasers, can learn tricks quickly, and are well suited to active sports such as Agility, Tracking, Rally Obedience, Scent Work, and running, etc, etc. Their intelligence also means they have a great skill of teaching the humans, so make sure you train your Manchester, and that the Manchester doesn’t train you.
The Manchester comes in one colour combination
– black and tan. They have a short, glossy coat and given the right exercise, can have muscular hindquarters. They usually have ears that come forward with the tips touching the head just above the eyes (known as button ears). They have an elegant yet athletic shape to them, a slight arch at the neck, tapered tail and a slight rise along their back above the hind legs. Their appearance often leads to them being described as a Mini Doberman.
The short coat requires minimal care. Manchesters don’t shed much so only require a light grooming by way of a brush or wipe over with a soft cloth. Bathing is only needed occasionally. Good feeding is required to keep their coat healthy and their teeth pearly white. Feeding must be well balanced with exercise, as they love food and will happily eat themselves to a higher weight range if allowed. Manchesters nails need trimming on a regular basis if they don’t have the opportunity to wear down
naturally. As they have black nails its important to be careful when trimming. Manchesters also don’t like their feet being touched so that is something that needs to be practiced from a very young age.
Manchesters grow roughly to 38-41cm with an average weight range of about 8-10 kg, although both size and weight often varies. Bitches are usually smaller than dogs.
A Manchester is not for everyone, but if you put in the right training, and ensure everyone, human and canine, understands the ground rules, they are a great companion for individuals or families. They can be nice and quiet one minute, and super active the next, so if they are going to be around younger children it’s essential they are closely supervised. Also remember that any toy, especially childrens toys, shoes, socks, pretty much anything they
can grab and run with, are fair game for a Mannie, so keep these out of reach. Manchesters are natural vermin hunters so therefore are not ideal companions for rats, mice, guinea pigs, rabbits or the like. As long as they are well socialised very early in life, they can be great companions for other dogs, and even cats.
Now you know a little about the Manchester Terrier and have decided this is the dog for you or you want more information, make contact with your State controlling body for purebred dogs. There are also many social media groups available where you can ask Manchester owners more about the breed – just be mindful not all are Australian based. The best thing to do is contact some breeders, ask questions, and go along to a show or competition to meet a Manchester in the flesh. In this way you will gain a better perspective of the breed and its needs.

Dogs Queensland was recently contacted by family members in relation to two female 13 year old Manchester Terriers, Trinity and Widget, that needed rehoming after their owner, Samantha Avenell, passed away. I took down the information and set to work to try and find these elderly girls a home.
Trinity and Widget were sisters and bred by Samantha Avenell, a long-standing member of Dogs Queensland and breeder of Manchester Terriers for over 35 years. Many champions were bred from Gallifreyan Kennels including the importation of Aust Ch Harkeats Hellraiser (Razar) from England, a much sort after pedigree in the UK. The family were hoping to place the dogs so they could live their days out in a loving home.
With assistance from Linda Saxton and Dianne Hull who ran the former Manchester Terrier Club in Australia, the breed enthusiasts banded together and put their feelers out for a suitable home. Within a few days, Sharon responded to their facebook post and wanted to open her home and adopt Trinity and Widget.
The meet and greet went well and as an added bonus, Trinity and Widget now have a big brother –Luciano the Rescue Doberman!
Samantha’s family were ecstatic and shortly after the girls were rehomed, sent me a painting that Samantha had in her house depicting 3 dogs – two smaller dogs with a larger dog standing over them – the trio - Trinity, Widget and Luciano. It was meant to be!
Here is Sharon's story on adopting Trinity and Widget:
I have been happily owned by a succession of Doberman rescues most of my life. My current owner is Luciano, a gorgeous boy who has been my favourite child for the past 9 years. I became a follower of Manchester Terriers after meeting a passionate owner at work in the early 2000s. Luciano lost his last companion dog over a year ago and while we considered getting another, a recent diagnosis of early dementia symptoms by the vet made us wary to get a younger dog, along with the lifestyle changes now that my children are all adults and we look likely to downsize our living
arrangements. I was concerned though as Luci was showing some anxiety when left home alone.
Funnily enough I was speaking to my hairdresser (another dog lover) and I said I trusted the Universe to bring me my next dog. And then a few days later I opened Facebook to see a picture of the mini me of Luciano – Trinity the Manchester Terrier!
My father was battling a shock stage 4 lung cancer diagnosis, and I was so saddened to read that Trinity and Widget had suddenly lost their mum Sam. I slept on it and decided to email the next day and offer to help – if these girls were meant to find us then it would work out. My middle child gave me a lecture about how she would not be helping with
new dogs to the household etc etc, while I rolled my eyes and went to meet the girls.
Thankfully the meet and greet with the girls and Luciano went better than expected and of course I fell in love with both girls. So with the grace of Sam’s family we took the girls home with us a few days later. Within 24 hours my resistant daughter declared Trinity would be her dog now and was just the best dog ever! You really can’t help falling in love with these girls.
Sadly my father passed away the same week, but it allowed both the girls and I to grieve the loss of our parent at home together.
Indeed the antics of small dogs in finding ways to escape out the door and garage kept us winded from laughing and chasing them back inside while we all adapted. Widget has such a love for Luciano, she destroyed all the baby gate barriers we had erected to try and keep them separated the first few days while they adapted to each other.
Now almost a month on, it’s like this was the demented aging pet and people family we were always meant to be (we have a senile cat Midnight who is 12 and Randel the python who is 15) The girls have started training us well to their demands of food and affection and are embracing walks around the local area. Luciano’s anxiety is much better and the girls have brought out his protective instincts, giving him a job he enjoys. Life consists of lots of naps daily and the occasional scuffle over who is alpha, no violence just posturing from Trinity, which we de-escalate quickly. Widget is so adventurous on walks, following Luciano anywhere he goes. The girls have such personality and are remarkably energetic for 13 and a half year olds – often Luci watches their playing while happily reclining on the couch. We really appreciate how short our time with each other is and just seek joy everyday while making sure the pets stay as healthy as possible.
– SharonAs a dog obsessed child living in the beautiful farmland of England’s Lincolnshire Wolds, my first introduction to the Belgian Shepherd Dog (BSD) was through the Observers Book of Dogs. Scouring the pages I came upon a photo of a Groenendael and believing it must be the closest relative to a wolf (another childhood obsession) I decided one day I would find my own wolfdog! In 1983 my first Groenendael arrived from the Vanistica Kennel, and since that day the BSD has been my passion. Originally Groenendael and Tervueren, and in the past eight years the Malinois has also joined me. Like many, I’ve also had to work, and I initially trained as a nurse in England. My interest in human health spilled over into my hobby, and I’ve been focused on the health of the BSD since those early years.
I’ve found the BSD to be a relatively healthy breed, with many living to between 12 to 14 years. I was particularly blessed with my first Tervueren and her daughter who both reached almost seventeen years of age; ‘methuselah dogs’. In 2019 the Belgian Shepherd Dog Club of Queensland (BSDCQ) was offering a grant for BSD related projects, and I was very keen to further explore why some BSD could be ‘methuselahs’, yet some would die younger. Primarily however, I wanted to discover how the known diseases that were found in the BSD in the rest of the world were replicated in our Australian BSD, and what health risks we could reduce. I thus applied for and was successful in obtaining a BSDCQ grant to conduct a breed health survey of Australian BSD, which I named ‘Future Directions: The current health status of the Belgian Shepherd
Dog (BSD) within Australia’. This was the first major health survey to be completed for BSDs residing in this region of the world.
‘If you wait to develop the perfect plan you will wait for a very long time’
One of the main aims of conducting the survey was to obtain data that would assist breeders, the BSDCQ, other BSD breed clubs, and any other interested parties, in gauging the health status of the BSD in Australia and identifying the occurrence of various health and potentially genetic concerns. Breeders and breed clubs could then choose to develop breeding strategies and health plans to address identified issues, as required. In Queensland, my second aim was to organise a one-day health forum for BSD enthusiasts to work together and to identify what action might be required in the future.
Undertaking such a venture is not for the faint hearted. Between August 2019 and February 2020, most of my after-work life was devoted to progressing this project. The first task was to develop the draft survey, which involved collating
questions from overseas breed health surveys, reviewing research and ‘grey’ articles from book chapters, online articles etc…, to ensure key health issues relevant to the BSD were included. The draft survey was then reviewed by a small consultative group (breeders, veterinarians, and academic researchers), who provided feedback. A pilot of the draft survey was distributed to 20 individuals in early August 2019 to highlight any issues and make revisions. The final survey was then distributed between August and November 2019, using the web-based survey platform ‘Survey Monkey’. Electronic and paper versions of the survey form were available for those who did not wish or were unable to use the web version. However, there were no responses submitted in this format. The survey was advertised by the BSDCQ, Dogs Queensland, and some other State canine bodies. It was heavily promoted on breed discussion lists within social media.
A total of 520 BSDs were submitted into the survey, which was heartening. The data outcomes are not provided here for the sake of brevity; those readers
Laekenois Annette Luckwho are interested in this information can find it at BREED HEALTH SURVEY FORUM AUSTRALIA OUTCOMES
I will, however, briefly mention some of the advantages and limitations when conducting this type of survey. The advantages are that they allow many dogs to be studied with relative ease. Surveys can be conducted quickly; and they are cost effective. Some of the limitations are that not everyone within a breed will be willing and/or able to provide information. Some of the information provided may be inaccurate; each question could mean something different to individual respondents, as was highlighted in the survey outcomes. In this case, there was minimal missing survey data e.g. in relation to the variety of BSD, and lower numbers of Malinois and Laekenois were entered.
One of the interesting dilemmas I faced was how to present the findings of the survey, as it would be easy to become overwhelmed, and to certainly overwhelm any reader, without some structure. Some breed specific health surveys have allocated a heading according to the percentages of dogs affected by a disease or disorder. For example,
the Australian Shepherd Health Survey (2010) designated their findings as extremely common health issues (10% + affected); very common health issues (4-9% affected); common health issues (2-3% affected); rare health issues (1% or less affected); and, extremely rare health issues, where only one dog was identified. Their rationale for doing so was that “2-3% might not seem like much but the reader should bear in mind that if a disease is inherited via a recessive mutation, this level of affected individuals in a population indicates 24-29% of the breed are carriers. If multiple genes are involved the numbers might be much higher” (Sharp, 2010). Although I chose to present the data outcomes in percentage clusters, I did not define the groups as above, which left the reader to interpret the findings. In hindsight I believe providing those definitions would have added further clarity.
‘Don’t waste your time and effort trying to persuade the people who don’t want to get involved. It’s like mud-wrestling with a pig; you both get dirty, but the pig enjoys it’
The Kennel Club (n.d.)
Malinois Alice OliviaAs with most breeders I knew what was behind my lines and what I was focusing on for health improvements. I had a wealth of tools at my disposal, including DNA and health testing, my own database, and other breeders, national, and international databases. For example, the Dogs Australia ORCHID database, and the International BSD breed, stomach cancer and epilepsy archives and databases. I could access Dr. Carmen Battaglia’s ‘Stick Dog’ concept (Battaglia, 1995), undertake pedigree analysis, complete Coefficients of Inbreeding (COI), and Estimated Breeding Values (EBV). Social media, such as Facebook, also has great breed and generic health groups to assist. Last but certainly not least, I could enjoy meeting with like-minded folk over a cup of tea, or after a show or sporting event, and having a good honest conversation about health issues facing our breed.
If I had access to such resources, what could we then achieve working cooperatively as a breed club? The idea of a breed forum, with the goal of developing a BSDCQ Breed Health Improvement Strategy was taking shape. Every breed benefits from a Health Improvement Strategy to prevent
health issues from developing, tackle problems if they do arise, and assess the good practice already being undertaken. The UK Kennel Club states that an effective Breed Health Improvement Strategy has four underpinning themes, each of which is supported by several activities that a breed club can undertake. These include improving breed health; engaging with breeders and owners to implement health plans; developing plans for health improvement; and, leading and setting the breed’s direction for health improvement (The Kennel Club, n.d.).
‘Have a go, see what works, then refine it and extend it’
On a sunny day in February 2020 the BSDCQ health forum took place, attended by approximately twenty people. The morning forum was open to anyone interested in the current health status of the BSD in Australia and was based on the survey. Topics included a comparison of its’ outcomes to other BSD breed surveys world-wide, and contemporary research was presented about the main identified health issues. The afternoon forum aimed to build upon the mornings’ discussion,
Tervueren Bevan Gillies Tervueren Bevanenabling BSDCQ members to work together to prioritise identified health concerns, and decide if, and how, the BSDCQ might address these.
One of the key factors that led to the success of the forum (which brought together a group of people with diverse backgrounds and viewpoints) was having a skilled facilitator. Joanne Gurd, who has extensive experience in facilitation and negotiation, very skillfully led discussions and kept us on track throughout the day. We were also privileged to be joined by Professor Claire Wade, University of Sydney (animal genetics; animal genomics) and Dr Joanne Allen, a veterinarian with over thirty years involvement with the BSD as a breeder and exhibitor. Both Claire and Joanne ensured we were provided with contemporary and evidence-based health related information when making decisions. Readers can find the PowerPoint presented at the health forum at Future Directions Health Forum – Belgian Shepherd Dog Club of Queensland Inc (bsdcq.com).
Following the initial groundwork, that afternoon the group celebrated what was already being done well, before moving on to explore key health concerns. There were seven diseases/concerns initially identified by the group that could benefit
from a health plan. The group broke into three subgroups. Using the General Illness Severity Index for Dogs (GISID) developed by Collins et al., (2010), each subgroup prioritised the diseases/concerns based on such factors as severity, lethality, and so on. Of the seven identified diseases, four were collaboratively identified for the development of breed health plans and there was a commitment for this to occur.
‘If you want to get everybody on board you will wait a long time’
Following the health forum the BSDCQ went on to develop a BSDCQ Breed Health Improvement Strategy and a BSDCQ Health Strategy Policy and Procedure; this includes the requirement to appoint a health coordinator every two years. The coordinators’ role is to lead education, research, and communication regarding the health of the BSD. As often can happen, due to various changes since the health forum was held the development of the breed health plans was delayed. The 2024 BSDCQ health sub-committee are now writing BSDCQ health plans for stomach cancer, idiopathic epilepsy and cryptorchidism. The fourth identified
1. Do not underestimate the time this venture will take.
2. Have funding available.
3. Organise a committed group of people to share the workload.
4. Establish a volunteer consultation group (breeders, veterinarians, and researchers).
5. Complete a pilot survey.
6. Make a start – if you wait to develop the perfect plan you will wait a very long time.
7. Don’t waste your time and effort trying to persuade the people who don’t want to get involved.
8. Have a go, see what works, then refine it and extend it.
9. A health champion might make a start, but you require a committed team to keep moving.
10. Evaluate your plans and strategies –use an action learning cycle to keep things on track.
11. And remember – a health survey is like a Tim-Tam – one is never enough!
area of concern was behavioural issues exhibited by some BSD. A new survey is about to be offered to BSD breeders and owners within Australia using the University of Pennsylvania Canine Behavioural Assessment and Research Questionnaire (C-BARQ) which will measure the prevalence and severity of behavioural problems in the BSD. Once completed, this will provide valuable data to assist in the development of the fourth health plan. These plans will value add not only to the health of the BSD, but also to the clubs’ educational programmes. The BSDCQ and its members are key to providing education about the relatively good health enjoyed by the BSD, and the strategies we require to enable this to continue.
By taking proactive steps such as conducting breed health surveys, holding health forums, and developing breed health improvement strategies, breed clubs have the power to make a significant impact. In the face of rapidly increasing scrutiny, it’s imperative that we work together, share knowledge, and continue to prioritise the health and longevity of our dogs. Let’s pave the way for all dogs’ lives to be free from preventable health issues and together ensure a bright and healthy future for our beloved breeds.

From the moment a puppy is conceived, all throughout their life, nutrition plays a vital role. Nutritional requirements do vary and change with age, breed, life stage and lifestyle. Reproductive status also needs to be considered as pregnant bitches have very specific needs for their health and the health of their unborn puppies.
There are two distinct phases to a bitch’s roughly 63-day gestation. Firstly, we have the embryonic phase for the first two thirds (6 weeks) of the gestation period. In this time, the cells of the embryo differentiate to form nerves, blood cells, skin cells, muscle cells, etc. The final trimester of gestation (week 6-9) is the foetal phase where rapid growth occurs in the foetus. These two phases have different nutritional requirements that need to be met, for the bitch to remain healthy and avoid whelping and neonatal problems down the track.
The energy requirements of the bitch in the first stage remain relatively unchanged. In the second stage, after day 42, there is a marked increase in energy requirements as this corresponds with marked foetal growth, while lactation has the highest demand for energy.
If the bitch if fed too much energy, and becomes overweight, this can be implicated in such problems from infertility, as well as whelping complications such as poor uterine contractility and an increased risk of a caesarean requirement. This dystocia can in turn lead to increased neonatal mortality.
It is important to ensure the body condition score of bitches remains ideal (4-5/9 BCS) during heat and gestation to help avoid this. Bitches should be regularly monitored throughout pregnancy for BCS to ensure their nutrition is adequate but not excessive.
There are specific nutrients that are critical for fertility, embryonic and foetal development, as well as neonatal health once born.
Folic acid is a B Group Vitamin important for the development of the nervous system. During embryonic development, folic acid requirements significantly increase. Deficiency can easily develop in the bitch if she does not receive adequate amounts, which can lead to increases in the risk of neural tube defects such as cleft palate, the most common congenital abnormality in puppies as well as dystocia.
A cleft palate occurs due to a failure of the roof of the mouth to close during development in the womb. This results in a hole between the mouth and the nasal cavity. Normally the palate will close around day 35, so supplementation needs to occur prior to this preferably from as soon as the bitch comes into heat. Studies have shown that folic acid supplementation during embryo development, significantly reduces the risk of cleft palate incidence.
Omega 3 fatty acids such as DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) are very important nutrients for
many functions in the body, including reproduction. These fatty acids are critical in the growth and development of the central nervous system, as well as vision for the embryo and foetus. Studies in puppies have also demonstrated a beneficial effect on learning abilities and cognitive function (trainability) with DHA supplementation. These important nutrients can also assist with the digestive and immune functions.
Antioxidants are another important component when considering diet as they can protect against cell damage and include vitamins C, & E, Lutein and Taurine. Beta-carotene, also with antioxidant potential, can protect the DNA and tissues, as a precursor to Vitamin A has important functions for embryo nerve, muscle and skin development. They are also thought to have a role in progesterone secretion, preparing the uterus for implantation as well as helping to maintain gestation.
An important aspect to consider with nutrition in pregnancy is palatability as pregnant bitches often go off their food. They may require digestive support in the form of a highly digestible diet, with a balance of fibres to support optimal gut health and function, that provides all the required energy and nutrition tailored for pregnancy as well as high palatability for bitches who may be experiencing some inappetence that may be associated with hormonal changes.
To avoid any further digestive upsets, we always suggest a gradual transition from one diet to another over 7 days, which is why the recommendation for Starter diets will appear earlier at day 35 (a week before day 42).
We recommend a tailored diet specially formulated for breeding bitches from heat to day 42 of pregnancy where the bitch should then be transitioned on to a Starter diet for the last trimester.
Royal Canin Ht42d (named because of the time it is recommended to feed) is specifically formulated for Breeding adult breeding bitches over 10 kg from the 1st day of heat to the 42nd day of gestation.
HT42D is formulated for Reproductive health with a unique nutritional profile to meet bitch reproductive cycle 1st stage needs: from heat to 42nd day of gestation. It contains added betacarotene to help prepare the bitch for optimal reproductive performance. Enhanced folic acid and fatty acids to support healthy embryo and fœtal development, and appropriate energy content.
• Body weight of the pregnant bitch should not change much in the first 42days.
The puppies brain development can be assisted due also to the enriched DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid, which is scientifically proven to support a puppy’s brain and visual development during gestation. Combination of prebiotics & highly digestible proteins help to promote a healthy balance of intestinal microbiota for digestive health & microbiome support.
• Puppies gain 70% of their weight in the last trimester, this is when the bitch needs increased energy density in the diet.
• Energy requirement will increase by about 10% each week in the final trimester.
• At the time of whelping, the bitches body weight should have increased by 15-25%.
• Food intake becomes limited as the growing uterus compresses the stomach; in the final trimester it is recommended to switch to a “Royal Canin Starter diet.”
• An adult maintenance diet should not be fed during gestation as there will be energy and other nutrient deficiencies, however a growth or Starter diet fed for the whole pregnancy will lead to excess energy and fat accumulation.
• Lactation is the only stage where ad lib feeding is recommended for the bitch to accommodate for the enormous energy expenditure in this reproductive phase.

The Lure Coursing season has well and truly started in Queensland with four trials recently held at the Dogs Queensland Sports Ground.
The Whippet Club of Queensland celebrated holding a trial on 4 May 2024 by encouraging exhibitors to come dressed in their favourite Star Wars characters. The winners (pictured below) were Penny and Aaron Park and their two dogs "Maggie" and "Chewie" who were a family of Stormtroopers!
The following weekend saw the first of four coursing carnivals for the American Staffordshire Terrier Club of Qld and the Queensland Sighthound Association. A record of 86 entries on each day made it officially the largest number of entries into a trial (not including novice/fun runs) in Queensland.
Both weekends saw several dogs achieve new titles and on Sunday 12 May 2024, "Taya" – CH. NEUT.
CH. DESARAN TITANIUM SECRET CAA (pictured below), owned by Sharon and Tennille Heys retired from Lure Coursing at 7.5 years old and obtained the last pass needed for her Coursing Ability Advanced title. What a great way to finish up a successful career.
Damian Linde and Grace Koh took the opportunity to learn the importance of a skilled Lure Operator on the field and the effect that it has on the dogs. Damian and Grace are the newest recruits into the Lure Operator Training Program (pictured above).
Since people went mad over SprintDog, we have many new faces now at Lure Coursing and so many people are so happy to see their dogs chasing plastic bags. Also great to see is the growing number of new members to Dogs Queensland joining up just so their dogs can chase plastic bags, which is heating up the competition for the rosette in the Associate section.
The overall winners of the Autumn Coursing Carnival were:
Sighthound: "Morton" (Whippet) – ALARVES JUMPN
JACK FLASH FCH: pictured below. (Owner: J. McKernan)
Coursing Ability: "Oliver" (Boston Terrier– also aptly nicknamed THE BOSTON BULLET!) CH. KELJAMAR THERES A TWIST JC: pictured below. (Owners: A. Hoult and K. Poole)
Associate Sighthound: "Nova" – NOVA CA: pictured below. (Owner: M. Simmons)Associate Coursing Ability: "Chewie"– CHEWIE CAA: pictured below. (Owners: A and P Parker)
The dogs entered in the Junior Courser class are not eligible to compete for the coursing carnival rosettes as Junior Courser is not a scored class. However we saw 4 dogs over the weekend win "Judge's Junior Courser" which is solely at the judge's decision as to the dog/s they enjoyed the most. A very diverse range across the four, we had:
"Alvin" (Whippet) – ALARVES MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY: pictured below. (Owner: J. McKernan)
"Eddie" (Peruvian Hairless Dog [Medium]) –ARTMAC SIR EDWARD: pictured below. (Owner: A. Jarvis)
"Remi" (English Springer Spaniel) – CH. FRAELIGHTE SHOTS FIRED: pictured below. (Owners: M and T Whitfield & J. Jolly)
"Pixie" (Irish Terrier) – CH. TAWNYOAK BETWIX N BETWEEN: pictured below. (Owners: R. Campbell and G. Ross)
June shapes up to be another big month with 5 trials over the course of the month with the Dogs Queensland Lure Coursing Sub Committee finishing off the month with a trial on 30 June 2024.

At the March 2024 Dogs Queensland Board of Directors Meeting, a proposal submitted by the Marketing and Public Relations Committee was presented and approved to establish a Register of Military Veterans who are Members of Dogs Queensland.
The proposal discussed that the Register will be a living document, recognising the service given by Dogs Queensland Members to our country and would include the names of ex-service and current serving men and women from all arms of the Australian Military Forces.
It is intended that those listed on the Register would be invited to attend the Dogs Queensland Dusk Service on ANZAC Day each year and that they would also be named and thanked for their service during the Dusk Service.
Being a part of the Dogs Queensland Australian Defence Services Veterans Register and being listed on the Register is purely voluntary. It is hoped that those listed on the Veterans Register, may in future years be invited to be a part of the Dusk Service and also present the major awards at the Championship Show alongside the Best in Show officiating judge.
Further, any members on the Register who are ANKC Canine Conformation Judges may be invited to judge at the ANZAC Day Championship Show which takes place before and after the Dusk Service.
This initiative, the establishment of the Dogs Queensland Australian Defence Services Veterans Register, follows that which saw 'Rex' – the War Dogs Memorial, established on the grounds of Dogs Queensland at Durack some years ago. The Dusk Service takes place each ANZAC Day at the DQ Sports Grounds – a service which is conducted in partnership with the RSL Forest Lake and Districts Sub Branch and Dogs Queensland.
The Dusk Service, which takes place at 5pm on each ANZAC Day, has become very popular in recent years with Dogs Queensland members attending the Conformation Show and those also attending to pay their respects at the service.
The service includes members of the local Naval Cadet Unit, which provide the Guard for the service. Owners, handlers and their dogs from the RSL Forest Lake Assistance Dog Program also attend and mark the occasion with a pass through.
This year’s show had the added partnership of co-sponsorship by the RSL Forest Lake and Districts Sub Branch, who provided the major trophies for all General Specials awards. This included a Perpetual Trophy awarded to the Best in Show Winner – with this year being the Papillion, Supreme Champion Birkino Victory Dance (Rasmussen and McGhie) as the inaugural winner. Their name will be listed on the trophy and kept by Dogs Queensland.
The ANZAC Day Championship Show Perpetual Trophy will be named 'The Rex Trophy' in honour
of the War Dog Memorial on the grounds of Dogs Queensland, known as 'Rex'. It is the aim, that in future years, this perpetual trophy will become as significant to win (and those will be so honoured as a recipient to have their name upon it) as the honour board for Dog of the Year or the Ekka events.
Our judge, the very well known and local character, Mr Victor Jones presided over all General Specials at the ANZAC Day Show. Vic, as he is known to most, was honoured to be judging on his 73rd wedding anniversary, as a member of the RSL Forest Lake and Districts Sub Branch together with being a war veteran of the Korean War. It was wonderful to see the enjoyment Vic had in awarding all his General Specials places on such a momentous occasion. It was a pleasure to be in such company and be a part of the presentations and feel the true spirit on our grounds that evening.
All our judges of the ANZAC evening and Paws Aid
show came from across Australia and New Zealand to truly reflect the ANZAC tradition of AU/NZ mateship and being a partnership in all that we do from dogs to country and more. In the judges’ room and at General Specials, all the judges commented on the feel that day at our event and that they had never been to such a moving service nor more inclusive and honouring show on any ANZAC Day show in any state of Australia or Island of New Zealand.
Thank you judges for your reflection:
BIS ANZAC Day Show – Mr Victor Jones (Qld), Royal Australian Navy (retired), Korean Campaign.
BIS Paws Aid Show – Mrs Beth Warman (NZ).
Group Judges: Mrs Linda Martin (NSW), Mrs Vickie Harris (NSW), Miss Emma Luxford (WA), Mrs Shelley Wildman (WA), Ms Christine Faint (SA), Ms Carolyn
Ryan (Qld), Ms Katrina Santas (Qld).
Congratulations to the winners:
The Spirit of the ANZAC Day Show was also a reflection of wars that Australia has participated in – a new and continuing proposal by the PR and Marketing Committee to truly reflect the spirit of the show as a memorial and not just another dog show.
Members may have noticed the banners in each ring corner recording a number of wars and asking those in that Group to reflect on the history of those historic events.
The General Specials War Memorial Trophies that were donated by the RSL Forest Lake and Districts Sub Branch were all named after a war or conflict that Australia participated in and we hope those trophies are now being placed with pride in the
most honoured position in the new recipients households, and to them we congratulate their achievements on winning with their beautiful dogs.
Young members reflected their interpretations:
At this year’s Dusk Service our youth had an opportunity to also reflect on what they interpret to be their understandings of ANZAC Day. Sadhbh Kefer (pictured page 30), one of Dogs Queensland youth at 8 years of age, placed her drawing at the foot of our memorial dog, Rex, along with the wreaths after the service. It’s important to have the future of our hobby, of our nation and our potential
future decision makers be apart of our Service and I’d like to thank all those parents who encouraged their children to be involved and share their art and reflections on ANZAC Day. Mum, Heidi, is certainly keen to allow her children to be involved in future years, so the committee will be looking towards making next years’ service more inclusive to our young members to express their appreciation of our nations and members service on this Day.
Fundraising to Support Our Local Service Members:
Entries for this year’s ANZAC Day and Paws Aid Shows were tremendously generous, and we thank
the Dogs Queensland members for their support of these shows. The exhibits presented for judging certainly provide for a memorable showcase of our breeds on this day of reflection to our past, present and fallen service men and women from across Australia and New Zealand.
This year’s double show saw all funds raised being donated to the Forest Lake RSL Assistance Dog Program, supporting our past and present service members with dogs, training and ongoing support to help their life in our community be fulfilling, supported and accessible.
Thank you for being a part of this ANZAC Day and Paws Aid Shows and supporting the show with your entries, donations and presence. I hope you had the opportunity to share your memories about your experiences of remembering ANZAC Day over your years at the Dusk Service and the show with all our fellow Dogs Queensland and ANKC members together with our invited guests. I’m sure you were able to take the time to to take reflection
during the day and support the Veterans both present with us in life and those still serving for us across the world as the dog world honoured the service they give and have given for their country.

Thank you to all Dogs Queensland exhibitors for your charity:
Once again, thank you for your entry, your presence and your generous donations to support the Forest Lake RSL Assistance Dog Program.
Your support raised funds through your show entries, donations, purchasing of raffle tickets and also not withdrawing entries when a late change to a judge was required the day prior … a very unpredicted last minute requirement – many thanks.
A generous donation of $7000 plus (with a final figure to be confirmed) will be presented in the
coming month to the RSL Forest Lake and Districts Sub Branch and we look forward to continuing this relationship in the coming years through these shows held on ANZAC Day.
A final thanks to:
• All the Dogs Queensland office staff for your assistance in preparing for the show;
• The grounds team – Rion, Jayden and Jesse in preparing the grounds and setting up the displays;
• The team at the RSL Forest Lake and Districts Sub Branch for the ever so strong partnership we are building. A special call out in particular is extended to President Steve Ford and Secretary Sharron Ford for making this ongoing relationship possible;
• Royal Canin for their continued support and sponsorship;
• Brisbane Screen Printing, Wagz Café and Show Manager for your support in ensuring all the behind the scenes requirements were seamless;
• PR and Marketing Committee team members who unquestionably dedicated their time to ensure the shows were a tremendous reflection of the ANZAC Spirit and a memorable event that our Dogs Queensland members want and will enthusiastically continue to participate in; and
• You, the members for your participation in our memorial show and dusk service.
Kind regards and with warm heartfelt reflection on this year’s ANZAC Day …
We Forget.

Dogs Queensland has become increasingly aware of Puppy Scam Websites using legitimate Dogs Queensland Registration and Queensland Breeder Identification (BIN) Numbers to sell puppies. Dogs Queensland Registration Numbers are obtained from legitimate websites such as Dogs Queensland or DogzOnline, where they are displayed as required by the Queensland Government.
Please see the Queensland Dog Breeder Fact Sheets for regulations and guidelines for Queensland Dog Breeders.
An example of a typical scam is:
• A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet.
• The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix.
• A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry.
• Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published.
• No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website.
• The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures.
• The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.
As a breeder what can you do to avoid being an unknowing victim of a Puppy Scam:
• Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix.
• Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate.
• Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct inperson contact with you.
• Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details.
• Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.
As a buyer what can you do to avoid being a victim of a Puppy Scam:
• Verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland.
• Ensure communications are made to verified contact details.
• Meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.
• If paying online, use a credit card or PayPal where you have a degree of buyer protection.
• Check website is an established site with a website security certificate.
• Avoid websites without physical address or phone numbers.
• A sk for proof, including ANKC registration papers and veterinary health records for any puppy.
Importantly you should report any suspect sites or advertising to the ACCC ScamWatch website. Please let us know about any suspect websites too by contacting Dogs Queensland on 3252 2661 or by email at info@dogsqueensland.org.au.
Dogs Queensland, together with some of our breed clubs, was represented at the 'Pups in the Park' outdoor community event which was held on the Brisbane Bayside on Sunday 26 May 2024. The day included demonstrations of detector dogs, dog obedience, Dances With Dogs, as well as a session on 'Get to know your breed'. There was also other fun games and activities on offer throughout the day which was well supported by local businesses and vendors. 'Pups in the Park' provided us with an opportunity to educate the general public about Dogs Queensland, finding a responsible breeder, the benefits of membership, and all the great activities available.
Thank you to all of our clubs who participated in promoting our dog world.
