Dogs Queensland has become increasingly aware of Puppy Scam Websites using legitimate Dogs Queensland Registration and Queensland Breeder Identification (BIN) Numbers to sell puppies. Dogs Queensland Registration Numbers are obtained from legitimate websites such as Dogs Queensland or DogzOnline, where they are displayed as required by the Queensland Government.
Please see the Queensland Dog Breeder Fact Sheets for regulations and guidelines for Queensland Dog Breeders.
An example of a typical scam is:
• A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet.
• The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix.
• A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry.
• Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published.
• No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website.
• The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures.
• The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.
• Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix.
• Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate.
• Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct inperson contact with you.
• Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details.
• Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.
• Verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland.
• Ensure communications are made to verified contact details.
• Meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.
• If paying online, use a credit card or PayPal where you have a degree of buyer protection.
• Check website is an established site with a website security certificate.
• Avoid websites without physical address or phone numbers.
• A sk for proof, including ANKC registration papers and veterinary health records for any puppy.
Importantly you should report any suspect sites or advertising to the ACCC ScamWatch website. Please let us know about any suspect websites too by contacting Dogs Queensland on 3252 2661 or by email at info@dogsqueensland.org.au
O“wning dogs brings us the greatest joys and the greatest sorrows. While we all enjoy the pleasure that dog ownership brings us, we need to consider how we are going to manage the sad times. Whether it’s through illness or injury or at the end of a long and welllived life, we will, at some stage, need to make a heartbreaking decision in the best interests of our dog.
This decision brings with it many considerations. Apart from the financial considerations, which in some cases can be assisted by pet insurance, there is the overwhelming emotional loss.
It’s always best to consider your options well in advance of any actual event or loss. Your veterinary surgeon may be a good place to start this conversation. Ask what options they have in place in your time of need. For example, do they do home visits if requested?
There are palliative care and end of life veterinary specialists you may wish to consider. These companies assist with all the arrangements including the offer of grief counselling, if required.
You may also need transport for an ill or injured dog. There are animal ambulances available 24/7 with trained staff to assist you with transportation.
You will also need to consider arrangements for aftercare of your dog. There are a number of options to consider. Cremation, aqua cremation and burial are the most obvious options. A thorough google search including checking reviews of each company can help guide you with the decision that best suits your needs. Again, it can benefit to make these choices well before you need to make a final decision.
Another consideration is the effect the loss has on family members and pets. In some cases, dogs who were previously contented, may suffer separation anxiety when finding themselves alone for the first time in their life. If this does occur, contact your vet, local training specialist or Obedience Club for assistance.
The most important thing is to enjoy each and every moment with your dogs!!! Time flies all too quickly and you need to make the most of each and every day.
“Raising a dog is like a rainbow. Puppies are the joy at one end. Old dogs are the treasure at the other.

“Dandies like to be part of a family so generally don’t suit a kennel life. Each Dandie has its own unique personality; they can be playful and active but also a loving lap dog.”
The Dandie Dinmont originates from the Border region between England and Scotland. They were originally owned by gypsies and used for poaching. By the 18th Century they had gained popularity with farmers in the region as extremely efficient vermin killers and famously large sums were paid by those lucky enough to acquire one.
As to their rather whimsical name, they gained that thanks to novelist Sir Walter Scott. In 1814 Scott published ‘Guy Mannering’. In his novel Scott enthuses over the prowess of the pack of ‘pepper and mustard terriers’ owned by farmer ‘Dandie Dinmont’. Such was their depiction that within months of the book’s publication, people across the country sought to own one of Dandie Dinmont’s plucky, characterful Terriers.
By mid-century their popularity was immense and even Queen Victoria owned one. By then their identity had well and truly merged with that of the fictional farmer Dandie Dinmont and, to this day, they are the only dog breed named after a character in a novel.
It is thought that they share a common ancestry with other Terriers from the Borders, in particular the Bedlington, Border, Scottish and Skye Terrier.
Today Dandies are an extremely rare breed, with only 300 puppies born worldwide each year. Their last period of popularity was in the 1930s, cut short by the austerities of the Second World War. Sadly, many bloodlines were lost at this time as many were put down due to food shortages.
Despite this limited gene pool, the estimated 200 breeders currently active around the world today are dedicated to keeping the breed alive and work tirelessly and collaboratively to ensure their quality and health.
Evidence suggests that Dandie Dinmonts were certainly brought to the Australian colonies in the nineteenth century. William Beilby in his book ‘The Dog in Australasia’ published in 1897, not only includes a picture of ‘Boolara Dandy’, a successful show dog of his time, but also comments on the state of the breed in the colonies. While he notes
dogs were being imported, he observes that little success was had in expanding the population and the best dog to reach Australia, ‘Border Thistle’ was, sadly, sterile. Indeed Beilby despairs ‘the breed is positively dying out in these colonies’, and that local breeders had all but given up on ‘resuscitating’ the breed.
By the early twentieth century no evidence of the Dandies still being bred in Australia can be found, though they are credited as being one of the breeds used to develop the Australian Terrier.
It was not until 1969 that Dandies returned to Australia, imported by Mary McCaul (Marydon Kennels). The male, a dog from the famous Bellmead Kennels in the UK arrived first, though had to wait several years to be joined by his breeding mate, due to an outbreak of rabies in the UK. Mary and her brother Don were active breeders throughout the 1970s and into the early 80s and during this time quite a number of breed enthusiasts also began breeding and importing dogs, though few records still exist of these early breeders and dogs.
One of the most notable Dandies to grace the show ring in the early 1980s was Ch Keltie Kavalier, a
mustard dog who won multiple Best in Shows, exhibited by Adrian and Lee Walmsley and later owned by Terrier judge and Scottish Terrier breeder Jan McRae in Western Australia. Disappointingly, like ‘Border Thistle’ in the 1890s, he too did not sire any puppies; a great shame for the breed.
By the mid 1990s there was only one breeder of Dandies still active, with the notable breeders of the earlier phase of the Dandies reintroduction (Mary McCaul (Vic), Cathy Crossman (SA) and Gina Tissington (NSW)), all winding back their activities.
In the early years of the colonies Dandies were only ever imported into Australia; today many Dandies bred in Australia are exported around the globe, either via frozen semen or shipped as live animals and now grace the pedigrees of Champion Dandies all over the world. Indeed the top winning Dandie of all time, ‘Aust & Am Ch Hobergays Fineus Fogg’, was Top Dog All Breeds in the USA in 2006 and winner of over 94 Best in Shows. He was sired by an Australian Dandie – as was his mother – and was the result of a wonderful collaboration between Australian breeder Emma Greenway (Jollygaze) and Josie Whittall (Hobergays) in New Zealand.
While Beilby in 1897 bemoaned that all Dandies in the colonies were ‘third raters’ in more recent
years there are any number that have won Best in Show and Best in Group prizes around the country, including Best in Show at Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide Royal.
While numbers may not be great or breeders many, there is a strong and enthusiastic number of exhibitors and fanciers in the eastern States that hopefully ensures that the breed continues to grow.
The Dandie is an unusual looking Terrier; it is achondroplastic with short legs, a slung front and slightly turned out feet that are good for digging. Its long and curvaceous body is built for speed but is sturdy enough to take on prey its own size, such as a badger.
Unlike the majority of working Terriers, its coat is crisp and linty, rather than wiry, and is nonshedding. Pepper and mustard are the only two colours recognised, although all shades of these colours are accepted. Most uniquely, it has a large head covered with profuse, pale, soft and silky hair complimented by tasselled ears (the colour of the topknot is silvery blue in peppers or a pale cream in mustards). It has particularly beautiful large, round soulful eyes and large teeth!
The Dandie Dinmont is NOT a constantly ‘busy’ breed and has been described as the most placid, easy-going and docile of the Terriers. It is not prone to snappiness or yapping and the breed’s demeanour is one of intelligence, tolerance, and a hound-like streak of independence.
Dandies are generally friendly to all, old and young and rarely initiate conflict with other dogs – though when offended will be a fearless opponent. They are an intelligent, friendly dog with a sense of humour, a big personality and an exceptionally loud, deep bark for their size.
Overall, despite the small gene pool, the Dandie is a healthy and sturdy little dog.
Glaucoma has been identified as a problem in some Dandie bloodlines and there is anecdotal evidence that they are more predisposed to some cancers. Other than that, like most dogs they can develop arthritis with age and back injuries if not managed sensibly.
Dandies like to be part of a family so generally don’t suit a kennel life. Each Dandie has its own
unique personality; they can be playful and active but also a loving lap dog. When young, like all puppies, they can be naughty, disobedient and destructive. Dandies have big personalities and respond best to a combination of strict guidelines when young and lots of positive rewards. Quite a number of Dandies have been used as therapy dogs with the old, young and disabled, as they are exceptionally loving and affectionate.
As the Dandie does not moult they make an excellent house dog. However, the coat does require regular brushing and professional grooming. The show Dandie requires its body coat to be hand stripped and legs and head scissor trimmed. A pet Dandie can be clippered and head and legs scissored. The hair around their eyes and nose should be regularly trimmed to prevent eye irritation.
If you want a family dog that is a big dog on little legs, friendly, out-going and a little unusual looking – the Dandie is for you.

In NSW, Greyhound Racing have a Race Day Hydration and Hot Weather Policy that requires all NSW greyhounds must be provided with between 250 mL and 500 mL of drinking water while kennelled during NSW race meetings.
The requirement to provide drinking water was initially viewed as controversial by the greyhound racing industry in NSW. Some racing industry participants were concerned that the provision of water may adversely impact performance; may lead to health issues such as gastric dilatationvolvulus (GDV or ‘bloat’) due to greyhounds drinking excessively; or injuries resulting from greyhounds chewing or playing with their water bowls.
As canines do not sweat freely like humans and their main form of cooling is through panting. Greyhounds not allowed access to water may suffer from dehydration which can be a serious health and welfare concern.
The recommended volume of water required daily for an adult dog is approximately 40-60 millilitres of water per one kilogram of body weight.
An interesting observational study was conducted by the NSW Greyhound Welfare and Integrity
Commission to assess drinking water consumption by racing Greyhounds while kennelled during NSW race meetings. In addition, parameters such as environmental temperature and humidity, race result and distance were analysed in relation to water consumption.
The result of this study provides some insights for Dogs Queensland members to consider, particularly when travelling long distances to shows; for dogs participating in sporting activities; and for heavier dogs/breeds. The amount of water provided to these dogs while at exhibitions and events can greatly assist with ensuring that they are well hydrated and recover well after activity.
• A total of 70 greyhounds were enrolled into the study.
• 45 individual trainers participated. 3 trainers declined to participate. The overall participation rate by greyhound trainers in this study was very high (94%).
• Trainers/greyhounds travelled on average 49 km to the race meetings, with a range of 3 km to 150 km.
• The study showed that most greyhounds (65.2%) will drink some water prior to racing, however the amount that they drink prior to racing is generally quite low. The average water intake is 305 mL.
• 92.2% of greyhounds drank water in the kennels after racing. The amount that greyhounds drink after racing is much higher. The average water intake after racing was 234 mL, with a range of 0 mL to 508 mL.
• Overall, the total water intake (pre-race + postrace intake) for greyhounds during a race meeting was on average 263 mL, with a range of 2 mL to 606 mL.
• Nine greyhounds spilt some water or knocked over their water bowls pre-race and three greyhounds knocked over their water bowls post-race. Use of clips to secure water bowls in place can assist in preventing spills.
• Statistical analysis of the data showed that the distance a greyhound travelled to the racetrack (km) had an impact on water intake –greyhounds which travelled further, drank more water while in the kennels (approx. 2 mL extra water drank per 10 km travelled). This was despite many trainers providing water to the greyhounds while travelling to, or after arrival at the track.
• Greyhounds which raced over longer distances (in metres) drank more water after racing (approx. 50 mL more for every 100 m of race distance). Also heavier greyhounds (males) drank more water than lighter greyhounds.
• Analysis of the data showed that drinking water prior to racing did not impact on a greyhound’s performance (i.e. placing) in the race. Therefore, having access to water prior to racing was
not detrimental to the race result.
• ‘Pre-hydration’ measures by trainers, such as providing water on the way to the racetrack; providing water prior to kennelling; or using hydration products (e.g. coconut water, milk, electrolytes etc.) prior to racing, did not affect the amount of water a greyhound drank while in the kennels at the racetrack. These ‘pre-hydration’ measures had no impact on water consumption in this study. This demonstrated that water in kennels is a valuable resource which greyhounds do use, despite being pre-hydrated.
• Ambient (outside) temperatures were between 13.9°C - 31.5°C during the study. Kennel temperatures were between 16.2°C - 21.5°C. Analysis of the data showed that there was no impact of kennel water intake by greyhounds in this study.
• None of the greyhounds sustained any type of injur y or illness relating to consuming water, or as a result of chewing, playing with or knocking over their water bowl.
• Dogs should be provided with access to water at all times when not participating in events.
• ‘Pre-hydration’ measures had no impact on water consumption.
• Drinking water prior to racing did not impact on a dogs performance.
• Dogs which raced over longer distances (in metres) drank more water after racing.
• Heavier dogs (males) drank more water than

lighter dogs.
• Dogs which travelled further, drank more water.
• None of the dogs sustained any type of injury or illness relating to consuming water, or as a result of chewing, playing with or knocking over their water bowl.
• Utilise shade from trees and undercover areas or provide temporary shade with pop up gazebos.

I’ve always enjoyed a coffee on my shopping trips but due to the fact I’d take my Pomeranians with me I was forced to purchase a takeaway in a disposable cup. Until now.
Located in the heart of Agnes Waters is Café Discovery – a café that serves up exceptional coffee, a variety of delicious homemade cakes/ slices and meals.
Café Discovery boasts a large cool outdoor verandah with plenty of seating and shade while the indoors is inviting.
What makes this café more special is that it is dog friendly – an eatery that welcomes all wellbehaved breeds of dogs.
My shopping trips now take a little longer as we regularly visit the cafe. My Pomeranians love socialising with other dogs/puppies and the public whilst I enjoy a good coffee and
cheesecake (that is to die for).
I wish I had found somewhere like this years ago and feel others will love this café just as much as we do. So if you’re in the area, pop in for a coffee and bite to eat – but most importantly, do not forget to bring your dog along too.
Café Discovery is located at Shop 4, Agnes Central Shopping Centre, Seventeen Seventy and is open Monday to Sunday from 8am to 2pm.
For more information about the cafe click on the following link to their Facebook page https:// www.facebook.com/cafediscoveryatagnes/

Australian Outback Spectacular on the Gold Coast is a one of its kind live dinner and show capturing the grandeur of the Australian Outback through amazing animals, spectacular visual effects and action-packed performances.
The current production, Australian Outback Spectacular’s Heartland takes guests on a journey to the outback through a transformative arena, immersive projection mapping, mesmerising animals and true Australian characters.
An integral part of the Australian Outback Spectacular experience are three Australian Kelpies – Red, Oi and Spud, who bring the trademark attitude of the breed along with their own
individual personalities to captivate audiences through their antics.
Dogs have been a part of the Australian Outback Spectacular experience since its opening in 2006 with Border Collies featuring in preshow entertainment, but it wasn’t until the commencement of the High Country Legends production in 2015, that the Australian Kelpie was introduced to the venue with a starring role to showcase the legendary story of Red Dog.
Red and Oi were the first two kelpies to feature in the High Country Legends production and were hand-selected from renowned breeder Callicoma Kelpies and trained for the role by Equine Manager
and Dog Trainer, Heidi Mackay who has worked with animals for over 25 years.
Heidi is responsible for the training and wellbeing of the show dogs and her passion is ever present with the dogs being more than just her animal co-stars or trainees, they are part of her family with Red, Oi and Spud all living with her on a property in Mount Tamborine.
A significant amount of training went into the role for High Country Legends with Heidi training Red and Oi from an earlier age to portray Australia’s best-known Kelpie and his travels through the Pilbara. The scene required Red and Oi to run from a back-of-house location to join the actor in a ute, respond to hand queues for a variety of behaviours and then finish the scene barking on queue. The dogs would work for a variety of actors who portrayed the human role, with the training as equally important for the human actors to ensure consistency with their queuing.
This initial inclusion into the show also dictated the naming of the dogs, who would both play the role of Red Dog on a rotating roster and were given the names ‘Red’ and ‘Oi’ to both respond to the queue from the actor who would yell ‘Oi Red, come and check this out’ to commence the action scene.
Move forward to the current production, Australian Outback
Spectacular’s Heartland and the introduction of Spud to the pack in late 2022, with all three kelpies now having a starring role in pre-show photos and the narrative driven dramatic show in the arena. The Kelpies play the pivotal role of Reg, the leading character’s, trusty companion and feature in a series of scenes throughout the 90 minute performance.
All three Kelpies participate in the pre-show photos where they sit on a barrel or quad bike and meet the guests attending the shows. It is one of their favourite parts of the night, and we noticed during Covid when this experience was not included, both Red and Oi required even more attention than normal as they were disappointed to not go and work.
For this component of the experience, both Red and Oi will work for 20 different cast members which is an incredible testament of their training that they are that versatile. As the youngest and still in training, Spud currently works exclusively with Heidi through this learning stage and is developing his versatility.
The show component is what requires the most amount of training with all three Kelpies needing to be comfortable working with a range of distractions, noises and smells along with other animals. The training starts with familiarizing the
individuals with the environment and slowly progresses with bringing more elements into the training based on their comfortability.
Proudly all three dogs can play the role, with Spud completing his first show in September 2023 before he was even a year-old.
Through their inclusion in the show, Red, Oi and Spud have also had their fair share of exciting interactions and have met some of the world’s biggest celebrities. Just recently Oi met renowned actor and director, Ron Howard, while all three met Australian band Sheppard in late 2023.
While the evolution of technology will continue to be one of the biggest changes ahead for the show, it is the heart-warming stories and authentic Australian characters and animals such as Australian Kelpies – Red, Oi and Spud which audiences are most captivated by.
Callicoma Rufus
DOB: 29/06/2013
If I have annual leave, Oi will be picked up and dropped home after each show.
DOB 25/10/2022
Red was the first Kelpie to be a part of the show and is the dog that makes Equine Manager and Dog Trainer, Heidi Mackay look good. He is fast to learn and continues to want to learn new things all the time. He has been integral to two shows at Australian Outback Spectacular ‘High Country Legends’ and ‘Heartland’. Red also keeps the pack at home under control and is very much a mummy boy. Red will only do the show if Heidi is present as he doesn’t enjoy travelling home in anyone else’s vehicle.
Callicoma Bushranger
DOB: 04/03/2014
Oi it the one that holds this current show together. He does every single show and absolutely loves to be involved. He is the first at the door when it is time to go do photos and hates to miss out on any opportunity and allow another dog to do it.
Spud is the youngest of the pack and is a born performer. He is super confident and excels in his training. He offers behaviours up when he feels he would like to continue training. It has taken time for him to grow his confidence in the show however with a full audience. We do take as much time as needed for all the animals to feel safe and comfortable in a show environment. This means that Heidi continues to go with Spud to each show until he is confident to do it on his own. His best friend is a German Shepherd, Rip and they play hard as they are both around the same age.

Judge: Ms Donna Morris (NSW)
'A world class champion and human coach.'
These were the words spoken by many attendees to describe Mia Skogster of Finland during her 3 day dog handling workshop at Dogs Queensland Sports Grounds, Durack in January 2024.
Mia is very humble, considering she is a 3 time world champion and a highly sought-after speaker/trainer all around the world in her method/program for Obedience.
Over ninety people from all over Australia attended the highly motivating event. Taking an 8 week old puppy and training it to heel by the time it’s 4 months of age using motivation and correct placement of reinforcement, was an eye opener.
Many of us are very keen to use this new information to train our own dogs and members at our respective clubs.
Thanks are extended to the organisers, Fenrir Dog Sports, who invited Mia to share her dog learning journey.
Dogs Queensland was the perfect venue where attendees were able to take advantage of the on-site facilities including the main function room, outdoor areas and Wagz Cafe – who provided lunch during the workshop.
We look forward to having more quality training workshops and seminars in the future thereby giving our members access to these events here at Dogs Queensland.
Some workshops coming this year are:
• Simone Holdengaard on 6 and 7 April 2024
• Vera Drummond on 10 and 11 September 2024.

These days there are more options than just holding a championship dog show in our zone and hoping for a good number of attendees. It’s time to start thinking about how to use our six shows per club option to a better way of attracting more exhibitors to our shows and to also consider the needs of our exhibitors too – travel expenses, travel time, more “bang” for their buck and theirs and your safety too.
Clubs are all striving for more entries on a tighter budget, less members committed to working and just trying to keep the sport alive locally … our exhibitors are striving for more cluster weekends of shows that will reduce their travel expenses as the cost of living grows, different judge options rather than the same locals again and “a bit of a win“ with great atmosphere with friends.
Here’s some food for thought …
• Do all your shows need to have an all breeds BIS? Have you considered that on the last day of your show weekend (usually a Sunday) having your show as a show that finishes at Best in Group and it’s classes in group … so your Best in Group of each group is your Best
in Show. This allows exhibitors to leave as soon as their group is finished rather than waiting for General Specials, enabling them “to get on the road” earlier and travel home.
• How about a show with Best in Group 1, 2, 3 and 4? Exhibitors love to win Best in Group and sometimes our show system doesn’t always allow a great array of quality in that group to be recognised as once BIG and RUBIG are awarded, many are “knocked out” of the competition. Thus, a show in this style has the potential to recognise the outstanding exhibits, is a faster show as only BIG winners, Baby, Puppy and Neuter (where offered) are required for Best in Show and then the remaining 3 classes (Baby, Puppy and Neuter). It can potentially have reduced costs for a club to offer too and can allow exhibitors an early finish time at the event for a rest or to travel home.
• Holding your six shows together as a cluster weekend? All clubs are at times struggling to gain assistance to run multiple weekends of shows as volunteers are getting more
and more scarce. Concentrating your shows and having them at one time may help reduce costs by having the one panel of judges use all their group licences to their full potential, reduce airfares by only having one set of airline tickets (not two), potentially higher exhibit numbers and thus turning more of a profit margin.
• Have you considered working with other clubs in the zone or even in other states of Australia? There are two options here: combining your two or three show weekend with another local club in our zone to form a larger cluster weekend, thus assisting both clubs by sharing costs. Secondly, bringing international judges in to judge our shows can be very expensive – have you thought of sub-contracting those judges from interstate clubs? The Dogs Australia website has a list of international judges that are approved for upcoming shows across Australia and what they are licenced for. Your club could contact the listed club and request if those judges may like to stay on and judge for your show at a significantly reduced cost of bringing them into Australia yourself.
• Your Club could conduct an FCI show? Have you considered a different show style altogether for one of your shows (not an
additional show but for one of your six shows)? Your club could apply for and conduct an FCI Asia, Africa and Oceania Section (A2O) Dog Show in 2025. Each state may conduct four of these shows per year and currently none are held in Zone 2.
At these shows your exhibitors are awarded the Australian Challenge Certificate and the A2O CAC (in general and basic terms is an FCI Regional style CC). This allows exhibitors to try and achieve their dogs A2O title as well as their Australian Championship titles. For many regional Queenslanders to have the option to gain these different FCI titles is restrictive due to having to travel to Brisbane, but if Zone 2 and 3 were to offer these shows it could assist both zones to extend their exhibitor options, that is, gain an even higher regional entry than in the past.
There is also the ability for your club to apply for and hold a full FCI CACIB Show in future years too. Again, this different style of show is offering both Australian Challenges and FCI International CACIB’s (challenges) and taking these options to our regional members and increasing the options for our Zone 1 friends to visit and exhibit in our Zone.
This is a call out to all those with dogs, not just on acreage but all dog owners. There has been far more Eastern Brown snake activity in the eastern parts of Queensland than in other years and they’re starting to come into local housing areas – not just larger acreage areas.
It seems that the Eastern Brown snake warms up in the morning, then gets active looking for food such as mice and other small vermin. When it gets too hot, it will look for cooler options to rest such as kennel areas, near water or even inside a home.
Our wonderful furry protectors want to ward them off and kill them to look after us and their fellow kennel mates or are just interested to see what they are. The snakes become scared and attack (snake catchers are saying in self-defence), but it also doesn’t take much to have an Eastern Brown snake get aggressive.
Please, please, please, keep grass low and regularly cut near your home and dog area so you can see any snakes; remove unwanted shrubs and low lying bushy scrub also so you can see any possible snakes and reduce areas for them to curl up and
rest. Do not keep piles of old rubbish lying around – take it to the tip; be vigilant if you know you have snakes in your area and look at other snake prevention devices to use on your property. Pick up scraps, uneaten dog treats or left over dog food and dispose of it so as not to attract vermin onto your property for snakes to follow.
We have members who have lost dogs this season and unfortunately some have lost more than one so be vigilant and relook at your property and think "Is this safe for my family and my dogs as much as I can possibly offer?"
WHAT’S COMING UP IN MARCH IN ZONE 2: Pack your bags and plan your trips … there’s some great shows and trials across Zone 2 this month that no one should miss. Well done to these clubs for putting on a great program and we wish you all the success for these events. (See list below)

Canine herpesvirus can cause decreased fertility, abortion, and deaths in very young puppies. It is also linked to kennel cough and, in older dogs, eye disease. More information can be found on page 22 of the November 2022 Dog World magazine.
James Cook University has conducted a study into the prevalence of this virus in the community. Dogs Queensland has supported and contributed funding the above research.
