President’s Message
“April has been a busy month and it’s great to be moving into some cooler weather!
We saw the Junior Handler Committee hold their show on Sunday 16 April 2023. In conjunction with the Conformation show, the Committee organised a Junior Handler Workshop. The Workshop was lead by Junior Handler judges, Michelle Hickey, Bianca Schofield and Tracey Goodwin. Thank you for giving your valuable time and expertise to help our up-and-coming handlers. I understand there were over 30 Junior Handlers in attendance for the workshop!!! Thank you to our members who brought dogs for the juniors to handle. Your ongoing support is greatly appreciated!!
We also held the inaugural “Junior Handler Suit Swap”. A fantastic initiative suggested by Toni Dennis. The Suit Swap was very well received and plans are already in the making for future events.
Our thanks to Mandy Schelbach and her committee for their dedication and support of the Junior Handlers.
As all committees are now being reconstituted, we look forward to your continued assistance with our juniors. Director Duncan McAllister has been elected as the new Chair of this Committee and will now guide the Junior Handler Committee, going forward for the next two years. Our juniors are the future of our dog world.
I hope members are considering how they can assist our dog world by nominating to be part of our committees. EOIs have been requested for our various committees. Please give consideration to where your skills could be utilised.
We joined together on 25 April 2023 at Durack to commemorate ANZAC Day. Our thanks to the Forest Lake RSL for leading the service and to all who contributed with the preparations on the day.
Over the next few weeks, we have many events around the State. Let’s hope the weather is kind to us and everybody can enjoy our beautiful sunshine and fresh air!

MEET THE PUG
The Pug can fill different needs for different people. Regardless of your lifestyle, a Pug will overwhelm you with companionship. Pugs are extremely friendly and uninhibited. It is rare to find a person that a Pug will not climb right up on and lick their face – they are delightful comical little characters.
THE BIG LITTLE DOG!
Most people are attracted to Pugs because of their small size, sweet nature, curly tail and pushed-in face. Pugs can have appeal for every age, sex and type of human!
They are small but sturdy; rough and tumble, yet sensitive and sincere. There is nothing a Pug will not try. Their diminutive size is no deterrent if they are approached by large aggressive dogs. Pugs are undaunted in a fight, though it is not typical for them to start a skirmish unless jealousy or food is a major factor. Pugs approach life with an impetuous, whimsical demeanour. This attitude can create both utter delight and hazardous concern for the Pug’s caretakers.
Pugs are naturally spoilt little creatures with the highest opinion of themselves. The Pug knows that people were put on this earth to cater to their every whim. They have no regard for their human’s body except to use it as a bed, source of heat, ladder, back scratcher or means to obtain food. If you’re asleep on the couch or in bed, your Pug will think nothing of walking across or standing on your neck and face. Pugs are also docile, quite, gentle and are equally happy watching daytime ‘soaps’ on your lap or going for a walk – as long as they are with you.
Older Pugs that have slowed down a bit are the best pet for the aged that you could ever find.
The Pug can fill different needs for different people. Regardless of your lifestyle, a Pug will overwhelm you with companionship. This is what they were always intended to do.
PURPOSE AND ORIGIN
The Pug’s primary purpose has always been exclusively for the companionship and amusement of their people. Their origin dates back hundreds of years before the time of Christ when the very wealthy Chinese bred them for companions and status. An elderly, long time breeder in England told me a tale many years ago. She said the Pug was so extremely pampered by the ancient Chinese that Pug puppies were often nursed by human wet nurses so the adored Pug bitches would not
get out of shape nursing babies. If this is true, it certainly could account for the large majority of Pug mothers who have less than adequate maternal skills and instincts!
Their lifestyle, since the beginning, tallies a log of generations of Pugs who have lived to simply endure pampering and adoration! All of this coddling and over indulging have resulted (perhaps they started out that way) in a breed that enjoys giving pleasure and amusement to their people… as long as they feel they are being treated properly!
THE PUG PERSONALITY
While no two pugs are exactly alike, there is definite Pug behaviour that is seen over and over again, generations after generation. Pugs are extremely friendly and uninhibited. It is rare to find a person that a Pug will not climb right up on and lick their face – they are delightful comical little characters.
Pugs are always coming up with new ways to make you laugh. While this may seem a conscious effort on their part, it comes naturally to them. They make continuous eye contact with their humans and are constantly checking to be sure that they are being watched and completely adored.
They are not an aloof breed such as the Pekingese, who may lift their head from the couch to watch you walk past. The Pug will never let you out of his sight. If you have a Pug, you will have a constant companion and I do mean constant! If you are washing dishes or standing in one spot for longer than two minutes, the Pug’s head will be asleep on your shoe (unless he has figured a way to be in your arms). For some people, this kind of togetherness is a bit intense.
PUGS ARE STUBBORN
Another characteristic of this pampered background results in some not so amiable traits for the ideal house pet. Pugs have a definite stubborn streak! If you’re looking for a compliant, always obedient companion, please save yourself and especially your new dog a lot of grief by NOT choosing a Pug.
Pugs can quickly acquire exasperating habits to get everything that they want, whether it’s food, your constant attention or not going out into the weather. When training a Pug you must
use positive reinforcement. Negative training will not produce the desired results – it will only exacerbate the problem. Pugs are not above using their wiles to get even with you for a perceived injustice that you have done to them.
You may wonder why there was ever a second Pug in any household? There isn’t another breed just a like a Pug and when you are hooked on their charm – you are hooked!
LIVING WITH PUGS
Pugs are suspended in life at the irresponsible age of a two year old child. They must be continually and forever watched over and protected. Most of the instincts that other breeds have for safety or survival have long been bred out of the Pug.
The average, well-bred, happy Pug is neither destructive nor is he an avid digger or barker. When he does bark, it is with a softer, more muffled tone than most dogs display. Pugs are not one of the breeds that require ‘continual jobs’ or they become destructive. Once they are past teething age, they do not have the ‘needy’
teeth of a Terrier. As long as you are with them, their ‘job’ of keeping you company is fulfilled. If you will be gone for long periods of time, that is another matter.
Pugs are extremely social and devoted to people. They must be taught from babyhood to spend some ‘quality alone time’. Often another Pug, dog or sometimes a cat will help fill the hours of human absence. Teenage Pugs, or any Pug that you are unsure of, should be confined during your absence with a favourite chew toy.
Pugs always want to have their own way and they will go to any length to get it. If stifled, it is a good bet that they will get even. To continue to enjoy every aspect of your Pug’s personality, it is imperative that you have a keen and forgiving sense of humour.
Your Pug will not thrive or learn from being continually crated or disciplined. The obstinate Pug does not do well in a household where all commands must be strictly obeyed to the letter and there are no smiles for the error of Pug ways.
The Pug coat sheds profusely – often all year round. People may fail to realise this before purchase because many books state otherwise. Because of the excessive hair and dander, Pugs are not a good selection for people with allergies. They need daily care to keep their facial folds clean. On the plus side, the Pug coat is very short and easy to keep clean and free of debris after a walk.
Healthy, well-adjusted Pugs in the best of circumstances are not always sensible and can display some obsessive tendencies occasionally. For the true Pug lover, this behaviour just adds to the uniqueness and charm of the Pug. The Pug breed is a distinct, wonderful addition to the right home.
PUGS ARE NOT RELIABLE
You must have a fenced yard that is secure for a small dog, or walk your Pug on a leash. Accompanying your Pug off leash, in an open yard, is not acceptable as they have a ‘malady’ that we Pug-folk have coined as ‘Pug Selective Deafness’. Pugs use this at will in the Obedience
ring or when they wish to run across a busy street. They don’t hear you trailing behind them shouting their name. If you combine this trait with their stubborn streak, you have a little package that you can never count on.
Pugs cannot be reliably boundary trained and will not come every time you call them. They are not even dependable when you think they are asleep because they have an antennae that wakes them if their human tries to sneak away for a minute.
The biggest danger in owning a Pug is that they are reliable most of the time and they give you a false sense of security about their behaviour. There hasn’t been a Pug born who is always dependable. They were not bred originally to be guard dogs or to hold trustworthy positions instead they were bred to be pampered and watched over and that is what you must do.
PUGS HAVE THEIR OWN SENSE OF INTELLIGENCE
To say that Pugs are not as smart as other breeds is not necessarily true. They may not have the cunning problem-solving abilities or exaggerated intelligence and instincts of some
other breeds, but they are very smart when it comes to what they think is important in life. Let’s just say that Pugs have different priorities! After decades of observance I still cannot decide if their first passion is their people or food.
PUGS LOVE FOOD
You might have guessed by now that if your Pug is normal and happy, you may be forever fighting his weight problem. This is, of course, unless you are trying to put weight on him for a dog show. That comes under the stubborn streak!
If you are thinking of getting a Pug for your dear Aunty who cannot pass by a pleading, imploring, riveting stare without feeding just a tiny morsel, then for the Pugs sake please get her a different breed. To allow a Pug to become overweight will not only shorten his life but also reduce the quality his life. It will break down his joints and reduce his breathing and heart function. If you own a Pug, you must understand that food and love are two different things! Your Pug will insist otherwise very day of his life.
PUGS ARE NAIVE AND TRUSTING
Pugs have consistent good natures. It is practically unheard of to find a pure-bred Pug from a recognised bloodline that would bite. Pugs adore, even worship their humans. Even if their caretakers abuse and misuse them, they are first and foremost companion animals and often seem delighted to see even the worst owner. It appears as if they can’t’ believe that someone doesn’t’ totally idolise them and they are sure the abuse is a mistake.
Pugs will pitifully try different antics to bring about the love they deserve. Because of this personality trait, Pugs are easily kept by ‘puppy farms’ (at least until their whelping and mothering inability’s are disclosed) or as kennel dogs.
People think that Pugs are happy in a kennel room, simply because the Pugs are always so delighted to see them! Often in situations like these, Pugs eventually will develop disorders to call attention to their unhappiness and loneliness. They can become problem barkers, develop a variety of neuroses or a stubborn case of demodectic mange. If kennelling is a
long term way of life, they become depressed, lethargic and the lustre seems to leave their very soul. Every Pug alive deserves to be a housedog – a companion living in a home with their people.
PUGS ARE BRACHYCEPHALIC
This basically means that they have a flat face. They have large shallow eye sockets, a large skull and no length of nose to speak of. If you choose a Pug for your family companion, be sure that everyone in your family understands the added risks related to this head type. Your Pug will be much more sensitive to hot and cold temperatures than a normal dog who has a length of nose to warm or cool the air before it enters their lungs.
Your Pug will be much more prone to eye injuries and inherited eye problems. There is more surface of the eyeball exposed and no length of nose to protect the eyes from scratches. I believe that, after living with many different breeds, brachycephalic dogs have impaired depth perception. It is not uncommon for a Pug who is doing some ‘zooms’ through the house to crash into a door jamb while
making the turn a bit close. They frequently damage a cornea bumping into a rose bush or other foliage at close range. It is also worth noting most will jump from any height – some to disaster. Pugs can never be trusted not to jump from car windows, just because they haven’t yet!
Birthing problems and caesarean sections are common for pregnant Pug mothers because the babies have such large skulls. Pugs do not snore or breathe loudly unless they have inherited a long-soft pallet problem. This can be corrected by a simple operation which will make their life much more comfortable and their breathing quiet. Pugs with this problem should never be used for breeding.
PUGS ARE ECCENTRIC
Quirks are not really breed specific and we all know dogs of other breeds who develop idiosyncrasies. However, Pugs seem to become, or are born eccentric at a higher rate than any other breed I have been around. Nearly every Pug that I have known in the last 35 years, has had a lease on a very odd habit, usually more.
PUGS AND CHILDREN
All Pugs that are well-bred are good with children, but not all children are good with Pugs. Some children, though they think that they like animals and wish to have one, do not know how to touch or play with them and have difficulty learning. Other children have a natural feeling that is not learned but instinctive. These children seem to enjoy a mutual draw between the animal and themselves. Regardless of the situation with your child, please be sure you are getting a Pug for the right reasons and do not get a Pug for your child.
Children are not little adults and the Pug will have very real needs and demands. The age of the Pug you purchase should be relative to the age of your children – if you have very young children then you should acquire an adult Pug. Unlike many breeds, Pugs are remarkably resilient and agreeable to new situations. They will work into a new home at any age as long as there is inexhaustible love and attention. In a month or so, no one would ever guess that the
Pug had lived elsewhere. If your children are active 5 – 9 year olds, a teenage ( 6 – 18 months of age ) Pug is the youngest that you should be considering.
Teenage Pugs are very puppyish and playful. They are often still teething, so they will steal and chew children’s toys. They are rambunctious and will jump on your child. A five year old can usually hold his own with a teen Pug puppy and will enjoy the boundless energy and games. The teen puppy is usually large enough to discourage the child from picking him up or trying to carry him when your back is turned. Children at age 10 are usually mature enough to be trustworthy in the aid and protection of a 12 week to 6 month old Pug baby. They can understand the need for ‘quiet time’ and are able to instruct their friends in proper ‘puppy etiquette’.
DO SEX AND COLOUR MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
Other than the fact that black Pugs shed their hair a little less than the fawn Pugs, there is little difference in the behaviour between the two colours.
It has been long believed by many Pug breeders that the blacks have all the properties of the fawn personality except that blacks carry the trait to the extreme. Having bred both colours, I agree with this theory, but it is not always consistent. Both male and female Pugs make marvellous pets.
Sometimes at maturity, the males are a bit more cuddly and the girls have more on their dance cards, but I’ve seen it work the other way also. Regardless of your choice in these areas, every pet should be spayed and neutered before reaching puberty. This can alleviate many bad habits and conditions that natural sex hormones can cause.
There is nothing quite like a Pug.
Lorene Vicker-Smith
Lorene has been in ‘dogs’ all her life and established the Wisselwood line of Pugs in 1964 then added Brussels Griffons some 20 years ago. She has been dedicated to establishing and improving the black colour in both breeds.
The History Of The Pug
Colleen Khoury
The Pug shares a common history with the Pekingese due to the references in ancient Chinese scrolls to the Lion Dog, Pai dogs, and the Lo-sze (referring to dogs with short mouths and/or short heads). In 950AD the Lo-sze were the dogs of favour and referred to as short coated and ‘elastic’ like. The wrinkling on the forehead was to resemble Chinese written characters with the most prized being for the three wrinkles that resembled the notation for ‘prince’.
Like the Pekingese, the Pug was also a comforter dog...it is presumed that the Pekingese were kept up the sleeves and the Pug on the lap. You only have to live with a Pug to be surprised at the amount of heat their bodies generate.
It was the trade between East and West that introduced the Pug to the Dutch who firstly coined the name ‘Pug’. This was thought to be derived from the clenched fist ‘Pugnus’ (Latin) and were also dubbed “Puck” due their mischievious behaviour.
The Pug became a firm favourite of the Dutch court due to the devotion of a Pug named ‘Pompey’ who alerted his owner Prince William when the Spanish were invading Holland in 1500. To honour The House of Orange the Pugs thereafter wore orange ribbon as collars. His grandson Prince William III of Orange when marrying the English Princess Mary entered the English Court with a
plethora of Pugs and so founded the love affair between the British and the Pug. Queen Victoria was also a devotee of the pug and also was keen on the black Pug. During the Victorian era many paintings featured the Pug often with other breeds.
It would have been during this period that the Pug was used extensively in the crossbreeding to many other “local” breeds as it was thought to humanize the facial expression, like that of the King Charles Spaniel. The Pug was also used in the breeding of the Affenpinscher and Griffons.
Pugs have been depicted in many art forms with cropped ears but this was outlawed around 1895. Some Bisque pieces also depicted Pugs with the cropped ears and leather muzzles.
Sadly the breed lost contact with its Chinese Heritage in 1949 when the Communist Party came into power. As there was a food shortage it was considered to be a waste to feed pet dogs and so thousands of dogs from ancient lineage were destroyed.
The West never stopped embracing the Pug and
many famous owners have amazing stories about the devotion of owner to dog and vice versa. Prince Edward and his wife Wallis Simpson kept Pugs as their chosen breed their entire lives, referring to them ‘as the children we never had’. Upon their deaths their Pug memorbilia was extensive and much sort after.
The Pug was imported into Australia around mid 1800’s. This was more than likely due to their popularity in England that saw the wealthier folk coming to settle in Australia –paying for the passage of their Pugs also. The first Pug was entered in to the RAS catalogue in 1870!
Interestingly it was the black Pug that was more popular in this period. “It may be said that he is just Pug either fawn or black, the latter has ousted the fawn in public and what is more, generally speaking, far better from an exhibition point of view”. Rice C Court

Member’s Tale Parkour - Something Different
– Ann ShannonIndianajones and I joined a local group outside Brisbane to learn Parkour. Set in a beautiful 1,500 acre Daisy Hill Conservation Forest it was very different to anything we have done before.
I had taken a drive there a few days before to make sure I could find it as there are many car parks in the (Name of) Forest. I was surprised when I found the correct number car park to come across a huge flat picnic area with lots of wooden tables and benches, surrounded by bush and walking tracks.
When we went back for the class of 6, the trainer asked if anyone knew what Parkour was and I cheekily answered “Yes, Tom Cruise jumping from building to building—when do we do that ?” They all laughed.
We started with putting two paws up on different surfaces – logs, wooden seats, shiney BBQ, stretching up a tree etc. This of course was easy for Indianajones as he had already done that in one of his early Tricks competitions – put his front feet up on the chair. Then he had to go round a post or tree which again was easy for him as he goes round his cone in competition.
The next one we had not done before –crawl under a log. I thought that if I throw a bit of food under the log out to the other side, he would go after it and sure enough, he did it well. Then we went for a big walk around and under trees and logs.
The second week we went a different way and to a little open-sided chapel which was all made of
wood. The seats were big logs and we had to have the dogs walk along them and then jump over the rows. On through the forest we found trees to go around, logs to walk along, stumps and seats to jump up on.
Then we came across lots of logs all put in varying
Clockwise from top left: Indianajones Up, over and around, Walking along big logs, Praying in the Chapel and Two paws up on a stump.
formations and they had to walk over many different ones on different levels. One was a big branch that lay on the ground and then the end of it went up in the air. I got him to go to the end of it which looked great. At the end they had to crawl under big wooden platforms. Indianajones took it all in his stride although he is not used to walking on very narrow wood so we have to work on it – he finds it hard to get a grip.
The third week we headed for the Wetlands and over a wooden boardwalk. There were numerous different logs and trees to walk along, jump over and try and get through (including this very interesting one I named the “Game of Thrones” tree).
Both Indianajones and myself are looking forward to more Parkour coming up!

Chris and his wife Lynn joined the Caboolture Sports Dog Obedience Club Qld Inc in 1991. As a very long serving member Chris has held many positions including President of the Club. He and other members instigated the undercover arena now enjoyed by many Dogs Queensland members for trialling in many of the disciplines.
To this present time he continues his role as an executive member of Caboolture Sports Dog Obedience Club Qld Inc and as a Director of Sports Central Caboolture, providing valuable input to ensure funds are regularly directed to the Caboolture Sports Dog Obedience Club of Qld Inc.
In 2006 Chris was granted Life Membership of the Caboolture Sports Dog Obedience Club of Qld Inc.

Life Membership, Dogs QUEENSlANd
Chris has also been a proactive volunteer for Dogs Queensland by committing and continuing to participate in the following roles:
• In 2012 Chris became a Member of CCC(Qld) / Dogs Queensland Dog Sports Committee.
• Chris was invited to be the Treasurer for the Dog Sports Committee which entails the management of all income and expenditure for each discipline. He currently remains in this position and is an active member of the State Trials Subcommittee committed to fundraising with the team by conducting Trials etc.
• In 2012 Chris decided to give more to Dog Sports and decided to become a Rally Judge. Once he was qualified he was appointed to conduct Judges Training for Rally Obedience (now called Rally).
• Chris was also very involved with the development of Judges Training and equipment at the home grounds of Dogs Queensland, Durack. He was instrumental in the organisation and practical development of the grounds for Rally Judges Training and continues to participate in conducting Judges Training.
• Since Chris has been a member of Dogs Queensland, he has always made himself available for all events such as, State Trials, ADS events and National Trials. He and his wife Lynn continue to steward at the EKKA as well as, on occasion, judging Rally there.
• Chris has contributed to the development of National Rule Reviews in Rally and the consequential education of Judges after the introduction of new ANKC rules.
Chris’s dedication to Dogs Queensland Dog Sports is unmeasurable and his shared knowledge with the dog sports paternity, demonstrated by his actions and presence, has assisted many of our members.

In keeping with the Dog Queensland Rules and Regulations (42.4 – page 43), clubs are advised schedules are to be submitted to the DQ office at least 3 calendar months prior to the month of publication of the Show Schedule. Please note that schedule advertising must appear in the Dog World magazine 2 months prior to the event (a total of 5 months).
Late schedules will appear in the following edition of DQ’s Dog World magazine.
For example, the schedule for a show to be held on 7 Novber 2023 would need to be submitted to the office by 7 June 2023. This allows for the 3 months prior to the schedule being published in the August 2022 Dog World magazine, which is the required 2 months prior to the date of the show.
To submit Schedules or for more information contact Ian at ian@dogsqueensland.org.au

Breeder Alert –
Puppy Scam Websites
Dogs Queensland has become increasingly aware of Puppy Scam Websites using legitimate Dogs Queensland Registration and Queensland Breeder Identification (BIN) Numbers to sell puppies. Dogs Queensland Registration Numbers are obtained from legitimate websites such as Dogs Queensland or DogzOnline, where they are displayed as required by the Queensland Government.
Please see the Queensland Dog Breeder Fact Sheets for regulations and guidelines for Queensland Dog Breeders.
An example of a typical scam is:
• A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet.
• The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix.
• A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry.
• Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published.
• No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website.
• The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures.
• The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.
As a breeder what can you do to avoid being an unknowing victim of a Puppy Scam:
• Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix.
• Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate.
• Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct inperson contact with you.
• Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details.
• Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.
As a buyer what can you do to avoid being a victim of a Puppy Scam:
• Verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland.
• Ensure communications are made to verified contact details.
• Meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.
• If paying online, use a credit card or PayPal where you have a degree of buyer protection.
• Check website is an established site with a website security certificate.
• Avoid websites without physical address or phone numbers.
• A sk for proof, including ANKC registration papers and veterinary health records for any puppy. Importantly you should report any suspect sites or advertising to the ACCC ScamWatch website. Please let us know about any suspect websites too by contacting Dogs Queensland on 3252 2661 or by email at info@dogsqueensland.org.au.
