The President’s Message The Queensland Dog World

President’s Message for November 2017 It’s hard to believe that Christmas is almost upon us. This year seems to have flown by very quickly. Even though there are only a few weeks left in 2017, there are still a number of major events and activities happening for Dogs Queensland. Dog and Puppy of the Year 2017 This year’s Puppy and Dog of the year events were a great success. The Saturday night event at Royal on the Park hotel was a first for Dogs Queensland, and the feedback surrounding the night has been exceptional. We had a very strong entry for both the puppy and dog of year categories again this year, which is always great to see. Congratulations must go to the DOTY Committee for their continued efforts over the last year to organise and hold Dogs Queensland's most prestigious event. To our sponsors (listed below), I would like to pass on a vote of thanks for your contribution, and we look forward to a long continued association with Dogs Queensland: • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

The President’s Message The Queensland Dog World

I would like to take this opportunity to pass on special thanks to Director Ainslie Carius. Most people don’t see what happens behind the scenes, but I can assure you that much of the success of the Dog the Year event and the National Junior Handlers final, would simply not have been possible without the hard work and tireless effort put in by Ainslie. Volunteer Of The Year 2017 The Dogs Queensland Volunteer of the year award was also handed out as part of the Saturday night Dog of the Year finals event. This year, our three finalists were Mrs Violet Grendon, Mrs Marilyn Pascoe and Mr Rodney Vernon. The overall winner of the award for 2017 was Mr Rodney Vernon. I would like to pass on congratulations to all those nominees and finalists put forward for the award of Volunteer of the Year. Volunteers are the backbone of our organisation, and their continued efforts for Dogs Queensland are, as always, greatly appreciated. The award will be back in 2018, so if there are any members out there that you feel deserve to be recognised for their contribution to Dogs Queensland, be ready to nominate them for this very special accolade.

Board Notes November 2017 Cyclone and Flood Disaster Assistance All Members are reminded that Dogs Queensland can provide assistance to members who are directly affected by the recent cyclone and flood events throughout Queensland. The relevant document explaining how to apply for assistance can be found on the Dogs Queensland Website.

Show Dates 2019 Dogs Queensland has agreed that a Working Party would be formed to look at all Show Dates and start times for all Conformation Shows including Agricultural Shows. More details including the Working Party’s terms of reference will be provided to all Members shortly. In view of the fact that Show Dates for 2019 are going to be the subject of a review, all Clubs have been asked not to make arrangements for Judges in 2019 at this time as there could be a change in their Show Dates.

Sweepstakes in Zones 2 and 3 Some country Kennel Clubs have experienced difficulty in conducting Open Shows. There is a need for either Open Shows or Sweepstakes to be held for 'Distance' Trainee Judges. Regional facilitators are now required to conduct four Sweepstakes each year – 2 during Part A lectures and 2 during Part B lectures for trainees in their area. These Sweepstakes may be for all breeds or just for the Group the trainee is studying. It is suggested that these Sweepstakes be held on 'Cluster Shows' weekends to maximise numbers. Trainees are required to assist the facilitator in arranging these Sweepstakes.

Dog World Copy Deadline Please note that the Copy deadline for the February 2018 Issue will be brought forward to 19th December 2017.

Christmas Office Closure All Members are asked to please note that the Dogs Queensland Office will be closed for the Christmas holiday period from 12:00 midday on Friday 22nd December 2017 and will reopen on Wednesday 3rd January 2018.

Supplied by the Dachshund Club of Queensland Inc Dachshunds are very intelligent dogs that have a mind of their own. They respond positively to training, although their innate stubborn streak may sometimes exhibit itself. If you want a challenge train your Dachshund for Obedience work. Without any doubt, the Dachshund of any variety will be a clever, playful and lively addition to any household. Dachshunds are a splendid choice around children. They are dedicated and protective as well as affectionate and playful. Their size, cleanliness and lack of “doggy” odour are characteristics that please the lady of the house. Dachshunds are alert watchdogs. Once they know what is expected they will loudly proclaim the approach of a stranger. Dachshunds are easy to love, but they give much more than they receive. They are courageous to the point of rashness. Their delightful antics will provide you with hours of pleasure. If you want to be owned by your dog – then the Dachshund is for you.

Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World

History of the Dachshund Breed If you ask an experienced Dachshund breeder about the ideal type of Dachshund most will say that a good Dachshund is one that is moderately long and low with no exaggeration, has a strong jaw, has a reasonably level top line, strong bones, good length of ribbing, strong breastbone, bold defiant and intelligent expression, true movement driven from the hindquarters etc. Over many years the ideal points of a Dachshund have been influenced by two main areas, the Working Dog and the Show Dog. The modern Dachshund was originally bred in Germany as a Working Dog to hunt wildlife such as badgers, foxes, stoats, rabbits and rats. It was required to go to ground and flush out prey but as the Dachshund became increasingly versatile, it was also used to flush out prey from long grass and scrub land.

Pictured above: Smooth Haired Dachshund about to go to ground during Earth Dog Trials

The Dachshund is one of the healthiest varieties of dog. Many will live in excess of fifteen years of age. Most breeders of pure bred Dachshunds test their breeding stock for hereditary diseases such as cord 1 PRA, Laforas and IVDD There were two basic sizes developed. These were the Standard size Dachshund and the Miniature size Dachshund. There was a third even smaller size called a “Kaninchen or Rabbit Dachshund, but these are not referred to in the UK Dachshund Breed Standard. They are however, classified in European countries under the FCI Breed Standard where the Dachshund is in a group of its own.

Pictured above: Wire Haired Dachshunds relaxing in the sun

16 - November 2017

The Standard Dachshunds hunted the larger wild life such as badgers, stoats and foxes and the Miniature Dachshunds were ideally suited to hunting rabbits and rats.

Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World

Since the end of the Second World War, Dachshunds have been bred mainly for the Show Ring. Some though, have been successful in Obedience and very successful in Earth Dog Trials. The original Dachshunds were the smooth haired type but during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the long haired and wire haired types started to appear as Dachshunds were bred for different hunting requirements. In the early days the majority of Dachshunds were standard Dachshunds, especially the smooth haired variety, which was considered by the experts to be the pure-bred Dachshund. However, in the 1920s the wire haired Dachshund became very popular but the long haired variety remained the favourite for many years. The Dachshund is one of the healthiest varieties of dog. Many will live in excess of fifteen years of age. Most breeders of pure bred Dachshunds test their breeding stock for hereditary diseases such as cord 1 PRA, Laforas and IVDD. The Dachshund is a very good hunter so here in Queensland care must be taken to protect them from deadly snake bites and poisonous cane toads. Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World

There is no doubt that the Dachshund’s country of origin is Germany. No other country can lay claim to the distinction of having created the breed. Beyond this statement of fact, there is conjecture, uncertainty and mysticism surrounding the early beginnings of the Dachshund. But this is true of almost all breeds.

ith the exception of those devotees of some known modern breeds such as, for instance, the Dobermann, there are very few dog fanciers who do not claim that ‘their’ breed was in existence long before the birth of Christ, or that ownership of ‘their ‘breed was once restricted to royalty upon pain of death. There are countless variations on these two themes. It is never quite clear whether there is an implication that an old breed, like an old wine, must be better than a breed of more recent vintage. The claims involving exclusive ownership of a favourite breed by members of the nobility are more easily understood. The motives for this last theme are similar to those behind a very popular pastime: name dropping. The earnest researcher who quite dispassionately reports on his ‘nobility’s prerogative’, does not always realise that practically all over Europe, at one time or another, the hunting breeds were forbidden to the common people, not because there was anything particularly wonderful about the dogs themselves, but because peasants and knaves were not supposed to hunt.

18 - November 2017

A hunting breed available to them would obviously have made them more efficient poachers. In any event, the actual breeding of dogs suitable for the hunt was very likely left to royal gamekeepers who knew the dogs as well as the quarry.

Early History Claims are made that the Dachshund existed as early as 1500 BC in Egypt and attempts have been made to support these claims by pointing to the existence of ornamental carvings depicting low-slung and short-haired dogs. The word Tekal, supposedly found in connection with some of these carvings, is considered as further proof of these claims since it resembles the word Teckel, by which the breed is generally referred to in Germany. The German breed club concerned with the Dachshund calls itself Deutscher Teckelklub. The origin of the word Tekal may be disputed, but it is reasonable to assume that Teckel is a variant of the word Dackel, which is a mildly slangy an abbreviated version of Dachshund.

www.dogsqueensland.org.au

Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World

Dachshund, in German, means Badgerhound, or Badgerdog, a name which describes the reason for the breed’s existence in much the same fashion as the designation Fox Terrier describes the original purpose of the breed. So much for Tekal, but what about the 1500 BC carvings? Dogs as well as cats are depicted frequently in ancient representations of domestic or hunting scenes. The carving claimed to be a Dachshund ancestor might, with equal justification, be claimed by Basset fanciers, by Corgi breeders, or the devotees of the various types of so-called Braques or, for that matter, of all petit chiens courant – small running dogs or coursing dogs.

Dachshund, in German, means Badgerhound, or Badgerdog, a name which describes the reason for the breed’s existence in much the same fashion as the designation Fox Terrier describes the original purpose of the breed.

ANKC/CHEDS & PennHIP scoring

Fortunately, there are enough ancient Chinese, Egyptian, Greek and Etruscan drawings and carvings for everybody, so that violent disputes are quite unlikely. If it pleases you to believe that your favourite breed is the oldest on earth, feel free to do so, some people, after all, take a great pride in pointing to their direct line of descent from the Queen of Sheba and they naturally wish for their dogs to have equal privileges. If we want to make claims with any hope of substantiating them, we cannot trace the Dachshund’s history much further back than medieval times. The first reference to the hunting of badgers with dogs specifically bred for this purpose appears to have been made in 1560 by the writer, Jacques du Fouilloux. “La Venerie, contains woodcuts of the dogs in question; they are of two types and coat varieties. There is a low-slung, smoothcoated dog with crooked legs and a rough or wire-haired dog of Dachshund type but with straight, somewhat longer legs. The former appears suited for underground work, while the latter probably possessed greater speed and agility and was more capable of tackling the badger once it had been driven from its lair.

Continued from page 19 Considerably later, around 1700, Von Hohberg mentions the same pairs being employed in badger hunting. Small dogs were used to drive the badger from his burrow, larger dogs to actually fight the animal. A few years later, Flemming depicts two “Dachshund” types, again, a taller, straight-legged dog and a dog with a short, somewhat crooked legs. They are described as being red or black. It must by no means be assumed that these dogs closely resembled the present day Dachshund – but they doubtlessly represent an ancestral form. It may be that from these ancestors a number of distinctive breeds were developed by selective breeding, so that the Basset, the Dachshund, the so-called Dachsbracke (a German breed resembling the aforementioned straight-legged Dachshund), and a Swiss breed, the Lucerner Niederlaufhund (low running dog), may all have come from the Dachshund types of 1560. As for the existence of three distinct coat varieties, there is evidence that the smooth coat and the wire coat were present in the ancestral dogs. It is not quite clear whether the long coat occurred suddenly as a mutation or whether, as some authorities have claimed, an old German Spaniel type was used to introduce long hair into Dachshunds. The latter does not appear likely. Spaniels, while excellent bird dogs, have no characteristics which would; have been appreciated in a Dachshund. It is difficult to believe that the Dachshund breeders of 300 years ago who, from all accounts must have been very practical, would have risked the otherwise detrimental effect of crossing Spaniels into the existing stock of Dachshunds merely to obtain Spaniel’s long coats. Crossing one breed with another is a very risky business because even with the best of intentions, the proficient breeder may end up with something undesirable. It takes great skill and a lot of time to breed out what one does not want and to keep or ‘fix’ what one was after in the first place. In spite of this, other breeds were crossed into the Dachshunds. Whether the wire-coated variety experienced a decline as such, or whether it showed insufficient aggressiveness we do not know, but for some reason it was decided to use Schnauzers – a somewhat Terrier-like breed of German origin – and the Dandie Dinmont. Both of these breeds are wire-coated, and both are fearless hunters suitable for underground work, so that the Dachshund breeders were, in this case, in a position to have their cake and eat it. They go the coat they wanted without losing hunting ability and aggressiveness; in fact, they may have increased these two desirable traits.

20 - November 2017

An added bonus, from our present point of view, was the fact that the Schnauzer pepper-and-salt colour and the Dandie Dinmont’s pepper as well as its various shades of mustard colour became established in the Wirehaired Dachshund. The only drawback to the use of the Terrier was the occurrence of a poll of soft, light coloured hair on the top of the Dachshund’s head for several generations after the cross was made. In the case of the Schnauzer infusion, a somewhat more serious side effect was observed. This was described by the German cynologist, Dr Otto Fehringer, as structural changes in the skull configuration and shortening of the foreface. Anybody who has had the opportunity to read Dr. R Banels’s address in May, 1963, to the annual general meeting of the Deutscher Teckelklub (German Dachshund Club) on the occasion of the club’s 75th anniversary at Goslar, West Germany, will agree that whatever risk may have been involved in the use of Terriers to develop the Wirehaired Dachshund was well worthwhile, Dr Bandel, who at the time was First Chairman of the DTK, stated that the wirehaired variety which, as he puts it, has preserved characteristics of the Dandie Dinmont as well as the Schnauzer, has taken a totally disproportionate share of the first prizes awarded in utility (hunting) tests, and a page later laments, “Where are our good, aggressive, red and black and tan smooth-coated Dachshunds?” He was not complaining about a general decline in the number of dogs of the Smooth variety, but rather a decline in the number of suitable for performing those duties which the Dachshund was intended to perform. As the standard-sized Dachshunds were created to be used on badgers and foxes, the miniature Dachshunds, both Zwergteckel (dwarf ) and Kaninchenteckel (rabbit) were bred to work on rabbits. Rabbit warrens are much tighter spots to work in that are those of badgers and foxes, and consequently, a smaller dog is required. The important dimension is the chest circumference of the dog. Unless it is small enough to fit the diameter of the tunnels that rabbits dig, the dog will get stuck. The DTK sets chest circumference limits of 14 in. (35 cm) for Dwarfteckels and 12 in. (30 cm) for Rabbitteckels. These measurements apparently necessitate body weights of 8.8 lbs (4kg) and 7.7 lbs (3.5 kg), respectively, for the dogs to be in good condition.

For a long time, hunting rabbits was not looked upon as a sport, and those that were taken were generally caught by peasants employing snares. It was not until the rabbit population grew to alarming proportions and caused considerable damage to crops that organised hunts were carried out. Initially, ferrets were trained and employed to enter rabbit warrens, but ferrets, although possessed of a deadly hunting instinct and ideally suited for underground work, were found to be unreliable.

Another association was formed in1905 in an area that was at the time, part of Eastern Germany but is now under Polish control. Their efforts were crowned with success. These breeders also started with small Dachshunds, but instead of bringing other breeds into their programme, they employed what is referred to as ‘selective breeding’. This method calls for choosing parents strongly endowed with the desired strain – in this case, small size – and eliminating from their offspring anything that does not show the wanted trait – in this case, any pup that is too big – and continuing this procedure until the desired result is achieved. This approach requires not only skill but patience and time as well as the kind of integrity that does not allow a breeder to compromise. No matter how beautiful or capable the too-large animal may be, exclude it from the breeding programme. Wherever possible, this selective method is superior and safer that the practice of crossing other breeds into an established breed. Selective breeding within a breed itself is the only thing to do today – and that is challenge enough for anybody.

Even the most carefully trained ferret, having made the kill, would often refuse to return to its handler. Dogs were the obvious answer, and somebody remembered the 1562 woodcuts of one Jost Ammons which showed the hunting of rabbits with very small dogs. About 1900, some Dachshund fanciers decided to form a club dedicated to the breeding of Dachshunds suitable for work on rabbits. There were some small Dachshunds available and these were crossed with Miniature Pinchers and very small terriers of unspecified origin. Unfortunately, this attempt at reducing the size while retaining the hunting characteristics failed. Small dogs did indeed result, but the willingness to hunt disappeared along the way. The breed club passed into oblivion a few years later and not even its name is remembered today.

Thoughts on Judging Dachshunds Written by Yo Batchelor In ringside discussions on the merits of various Dachshunds, one often hears the comment “I find it hard to sort them out – they all look the same to me”. Apart from the obvious differences between the six varieties of Dachshund, in size and coat, there should be very little if any variation in shape and breed type. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

o assist the breeder and judge of Dachshunds possibly the best of the numerous breed text-books available today is “The Popular Dachshund” by Dr Erich Fitch Daglish, this work often being loosely referred to as the Dachshund bible. Yet another book is Sayer’s illustrated Standard of Points of the Dachshund which is as its title suggests, a series of excellent line drawings, and first-rate extensions of the breed standard. Both books are a must in the library of any person who must assess the breed, be a breeder or judge. The latter book is generally available from the breed clubs in each state. In his book – in the chapter titled The Smooth Dachshund Today – Dr Fitch Daglish simplifies the word picture of the Dachshund with the following statement “The qualities requisite in the show Dachshund may be summarised as the three S’s and the three L’s which stand for Soundness, Substance and Symmetry, with Length, Lowness to ground and Level top-line”. If any of these qualities are missing in the Dachshund, it immediately loses an essential contributing feature of breed type.

22 - November 2017

The Essential Breed Qualities As far as space permits, let us deal with these qualities separately. SOUNDNESS of body and limb must go hand in hand with soundness of mind to achieve the required bold, defiant carriage of head. Intelligent expression and willingness to go to ground and stay there until his task is complete. After all, he is a hunting hound as his name implies – Dachshund (trans. Badger Dog). Character and attitude are essential. SUBSTANCE. The degree of substance must be totally related to the rest of the dog, be it standard or miniature. Substance is bone, not flesh, and a Dachshund which is light in bone, no matter how much flesh he carries, cannot possibly cope with the stress of field work. One light in bone but no so fleshed up, may appear to be rather elegant, but do assess this carefully, and don’t be misled. One of our most respected breeders, the late Jacqueline Reading was once heard to say, “Over elegance will make a Dachshund look like an elongated canary on sticks”. However, one which is very heavy in bone will almost certainly be coarse, and so where something is good, a lot is not necessarily better. Exaggeration in any form is to be abhorred.

SYMMETRY is an alternative term for balance, and in relation to the Dachshund conjures up the image of a graceful flowing outline, which is all curves, every part relating to the next, so that the whole gives the impression of total harmony, with no area being ‘overdone’. To simplify, a heavy forequarter with a light hindquarter will throw the dog out of balance, both to the beholder and in actual function. LENGTH. The Dachshund length is assessed from point of the prominent breastbone to the rear of the hindquarters and the correct length of body in relation to length of back (i.e. front withers to croup) is achieved by correct angulation, both for and aft. Shoulder blade, upper are of EQUAL LENGTH and correct degree of angle with the hindquarter similarly constructed gives the dog his desired length and a short muscular, deep loin gives his body strength.

LOWNESS TO GROUND. This is often misconstrued as it being desirable for a Dachshund to be ultra deep in chest. This is not the case, as it would prove to be a hindrance in the field or underground. Ideally, the deepest point of the chest should be as the wrist giving working clearance under the dog. Lowness to ground is a keynote of the breed and is assessed at the withers. To again quote Dr Fitch Daglish “At our shows, we see many exhibits with chests so deep as to all but touch the ground, but which are much too high at the withers to have any hope of following a fox or badger to its earth”. LEVEL TOP-LINE. In assessing the back line of the Dachshund, very often a dead level or table top backline is lauded but in actual fact should be condemned. The correct and strongest top line is one where here is slight depression at the shoulder and a slight arch over the loin. This is not always immediately perceptible but can be felt when the hand is run along the back from wither to croup. This formation, in conjunction with ribbing which is sound and long, gives strength, and should finish off with a beautiful uninterrupted sweep of underline, from breastbone, along the keel, right through to the moderately tucked-up belly. One of the greatest problems in the present-day Dachshund is a short upper arm. This problem has more baring on the function and appearance of the dog than perhaps any other. With a short upper are go upright shoulders, lack of prominent fore chest, short necks, poor head carriage and restricted reach in front. Yet another problem is a long hock, which gives the dog a high on leg, reachy, totally untypical appearance.

There are many more requirements to be examined in judging Dachshunds, not the least of these being movement, but this would require a whole article of its own. However, if all of the six preceding qualities are present in the dog brought before the judge for decision, it would follow that there would not be too much wrong with him and the rest would be the icing on the cake of a dog with excellent breed type.

Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World

Written by Dr E. Fitch Daglish

hen we say that a puppy takes after its sire or dam we imply that it has inherited certain factors or genes, which, under suitable environmental conditions, will produce characters similar to those shown by its parents.

The great majority of the points we desire in a show dog are controlled by dominant genes. Conversely, practically all faults or defects (such as lack of length, poor bone, bad mouth, steep front, wrong angulation and light eyes) are controlled by recessive genes.

eliminated from a strain by adopting the simple precaution of refraining from breeding form any dog or bitch which shows it.

Any animal which carries the gene for a dominant quality must show that quality. If a feature that is dominant is not visually expressed in a dog’s appearance, its controlling gene must be absent from that dogs genetical makeup, and cannot therefore, be transmitted to any of its offspring.

If for some reason, a breeder should wish to eliminate the red colour from his kennel and breed only black and tans, all he has to do is to ensure that a red dog or bitch is never used for breeding.

From this it follows that any unwanted character which is under the control of a dominant gene can be quickly

24 - November 2017

To take a simple example. In the Dachshund, red coat colour is dominant to black and tan.

The elimination of a recessive character is much more difficult, for its gene may be carried and passed on by a dog or bitch whose appearance gives no indication of its presence.

Thus, a red Dachshund may sire or bear a proportion of black and tan puppies if it carries bald and tan as a hidden recessive and mated to a partner which is also carrying the recessive gene. In the same way light eyed puppies may appear in a litter bred from two dark eyed parents. It is this fact that makes it so difficult to forecast the breeding worth of an animal from its appearance alone, and explains why a dog which has put up an impressive record of wins at the shows may fail to sire anything of note, however good the bitches he serves may be. It also shows how baseless is the idea, to which many novice breeders still seem to cling, that though a bitch with

www.dogsqueensland.org.au

Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World

hereditary fault is useless for showing, she may nevertheless be valuable for breeding, provided both her sire and dam were free from the fault shown by her. To breed from such a bitch can only result in the recessive gene being transmitted to all her offspring. If she is put to a dog which does not carry the recessive factor, the fault will not be apparent in the puppies, but each of them will carry the unwanted gene as part of its maternal inheritance, and will pass it to a proportion of its progeny.

it, and must transmit the factor for the development of that character to all its progeny. It should also be realised that the gene, for the alternative dominant character is wholly absent from the genetical constitution of the animal concerned. If a faulty dog is mated to a bitch with the same fault, all of their offspring will show their parents ‘fault.'

Breeders should clearly understand that any dog or bitch, which shows a recessive character – usually, though not invariability, a fault – must carry a double dose of the gene that controls

www.dogsqueensland.org.au

Never lose sight of the fact that each parent contributed equally to the genetic make-up of their offspring. Good or bad points (or the genes responsible for their development) may be transmitted by either the dog or the bitch. Most breeders are apt to look for greater quality in a stud dog that in a brood. This is, perhaps, understandable, for really first-class bitches are very hard to come by, whereas the services of the best dogs are available at moderate fees in most breeds.

So that, although the fault may be hidden in the first generation, the genes for its development are sure to be further disseminated if faultcarriers are used for breeding. The fact that both parents of a faulty animal are visually free of the fault has no bearing on that animal’s ability to transmit genes for its own defective condition.

dam, may be combined in individual puppies.

For that reason, animals with the same fault should never be mated together. When arranging a mating it should be the breeder’s constant endeavour to pair a dog and a bitch which together possess all the qualities desired in a really good representative of the breed, in the hope that those qualities, some contributed by the sire and some of the

It should be realised however, that there are limits to what a dog can do to correct faults shown or carried by the bitches sent to him. Do not expect to breed good stock from inferior bitches. Remember that in breeding, one gets in a litter only the qualities contributed by the parents.

Continued from page 25 As already mentioned, the breeder’s ideal is to concentrate all the good points of both sire and the dam in their puppies. That is the goal to work for in every litter bred, or in every member even of the best litters, provided a mating is carefully planned such a result maybe reasonably hoped for in a proportion of the youngsters produced. When planning a mating always look beyond the immediate result. Have a clear idea of how the progeny is to be used in future breeding operations. For permanent success in the breeding of pedigree Dachshunds, every mating arranged should be part of a planned programme, and not the haphazard hit or miss affair which is all too common today.

From time to time a litter of Dachshunds, bred from two Smooth-haired parents is found to include a Long-haired puppy of two. Lately there has been some speculation regarding the value for breeding purposes of Long-hairs thus produced.

Indeed, some very excellent specimens have originated in this way both in Britain and Germany. Mated to other Long-hairs, the breed as true for coat as they would, had their sire and dam been bred from an unbroken line of Long-haired ancestors.

The occurrence of a Long-haired puppy in a litter of Smooths merely indicates that the recessive gene for the long coat is carried by both the sire and the dam.

As to whether their smooth breeding can reasonably be regarded as detracting from their value as potential studs or broods, this depends on factors quite unconnected with the nature of their coats.

There is no reason whatever why the animals concerned should not be registered and shown as Long-hairs. The fact that they come from Smooth parents will have no effect on the length or texture of their coats. Long-haired Dachshunds have been bred from Smooths on many occasions in the past.

If they are to be used for breeding Longhairs they will, of course, represent an outcross to any representative of the variety to which they are likely to be mated. That might or might not be a good thing.

Some breeders may consider that the introduction or a highclass Smooth blood-line would be in the best interests of the Long-haired variety, but others may be strongly opposed to experimenting with new blood.

That is the goal to work for in every litter bred, or in every member even of the best litters, provided a mating is carefully planned such a result maybe reasonably hoped for in a proportion of the youngsters produced. Were it decided to breed the Smooth-bred Long-hairs with Smooth mates, no exception could be taken to their bloodlines, and as long as the mates chosen for them were free from the recessive gene for the long coat only Smooth puppies would be bred.

Graham Ellis is the digger with the dog.

Sapper Graham Ellis – Royal Australian Engineers Written by George Hulse Graham Ellis was born in Manchester in the UK and moved to Australia in 1994. Graham is a brickie by trade and when he decided to join the Australian Army, he underwent the required courses to become an soldier and eventually entered the Corps of Royal Australian Engineers. He wanted to become a dog handler (a doggie) and achieved this in 2001. Graham, as a combat engineer doggie was teamed-up with a cross-bred Labrador x Greyhound named BAILEY. BAILEY had been recruited from a dog shelter.

CHOGM 2. COOLUM QUEENSLAND. 2002 CHOGM 2 was convened at Coolum near the Sunshine Coast District of Queensland in late 2002. Every EDD team in the RAE was brigaded to support this event and were transported to the Army Reserve Training Depot at Yandina (near Coolum). The EDD teams were accommodated in tents together with their dogs. The stay was for three weeks and the engineer doggies made good use of the opportunity to exchange ideas, watch each other operate and come away with a host of ideas and methods for searching buildings, vehicles, personnel and open areas of land including beaches, golf courses, sports centres, backyards and streets. Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II usually opens CHOGM events and this one was no exception. She visited Cairns on her visit to Australia in 2002 and Graham and a couple of EDD teams were sent there to provide security support. The EDD searches were conducted under tight timeframes as the venues that Her Majesty visited were searched almost immediately before she arrived, but had to be clear by the time that she was on-site. One such search area included an artist´s market, a cable car system, a regional centre and the Cairns International Airport. All done in one day of work. In just that day of work with BAILEY, Graham experienced a ‘shocker’ of a day. EDD are supposed to be quiet, friendly, come-up-and-pat-me dogs. They are not the ¨land-sharks¨of the Special Forces dogs. So, what caused Graham´s consternation? Well, in an eight hour shift, BAILEY bit six people. It went like this: Bite One: Graham took BAILEY out of a vehicle and the dog saw a policeman standing close by. BAILEY bit the Policeman. Not a good start to the day. Bite Two: Graham and BAILEY were searching a stretch of railway line where there was a privet hedge growing along one side of it. The hedge was high and BAILEY couldn't see over it. As BAILEY came to the end of the hedge, a man suddenly burst out in front of him, and he took the fellow down with one bite. Graham was distraught. The man was in shock. BAILEY couldn't care less. Graham’s Sergeant was a little disturbed and banished Graham and BAILEY to search a garbage bin area near a restaurant.

Bites Four, Five and Six: Cairns airport. Her Majesty is about to depart and the EDD teams had finished their work. The EDD teams were standing in an area where Her Majesty was about to pass. A large group of Girl Guides were nearby waving flags and cheering. BAILEY started to become excited and very restive. The Queen had indicated that she would like to meet the personnel who had provided her security. Being a dog person herself, she was interested in the EDD teams. In fact Corporal David Simpson´s dog, EDD VEGAS, was featured in the local newspapers sniffing the Queen´s handbag. However, as BAILEY became more excited and began to prance on his legs, one of the bosses of the EDD teams, Sergeant Brendan Johnson, said to Graham ¨You had better get going mate, because if that dog bites the Queen, you´re dead!¨ Graham left. Her Majesty was about 2 metres away from Graham and he almost got to meet The Queen. Almost. He moved his dog to the rear of the cheering Girl Guides. In front of Graham were the Rolls-Royce cars in which the Queen travelled. Her car had the Royal Pendant fixed to the front of it. Suddenly, a man tore out of the crowd, ran to the pendant and snatched it from the car. He ran straight at Graham and BAILEY. Graham let BAILEY go and he took the guy down. The pendant was saved. That was good. BAILEY spotted two policemen who were giving chase to the would-be pendant thief and took them down as well. That was bad. Graham was distraught at the horrible day he had with BAILEY and thought that his days as an Engineer doggie were over. But that was not the case. BAILEY was retired and Graham went on to serve an extraordinary set of rotations in the Afghanistan War with another EDD named DIGGER. He was promoted to Sergeant and is now retired in the Campbelltown area of NSW. Much more on Sergeant Graham Ellis in the upcoming book ”In Dogs We Trust”. Photo credits: Supplied by ADF Media

Bite Three: BAILEY bit a lady at the restaurant who was working in the kitchen. She came out of it, surprised BAILEY, and fell his instant victim. Sapper Ellis was not having a good day.
