ello and welcome to our third issue! This time last year we were just launching the first magazine. It was quite a year. We had a launch bash complete with vintage entertainment, a very impressive cake-off, massage, hair/make-up, photo booth and a tattoo station. It was the best. When issue two came out in the autumn we felt like having another party... so we did. We had very similar shenanigans and even got into the local paper. We love networking with the wedding industry so we’ve decided to have a party every issue (any excuse). All our advertisers are invited and contributions to make the party go with a bang are welcome. Then of course we share the photos with our followers via social media, et voila! Connections are made and suppliers are promoted which is what Doily Days is all about. This summer Doily Days won’t be doing any weddings. We’re having our first season off since 2010. Personally I’m looking forward to fun-filled days of camping adventures, BBQs and enjoying my new local beach (West Wittering) but I know I’m going to miss the weddings – meeting new suppliers, finding out what you creative brides have been up to, late nights and dancing in the kitchen with my crazy team. I’ll also miss the left over bubbly that used to get thrust my way! But I won’t miss the washing up and the weekly weather panic.

Setting the ScenE words by Hannah Best

photo by www.joannabrownphotography.com Petal & Feast’s style is creative and eclectic. The business grew out of a love of vintage bits and bobs and lovely food and flowers, but also from the idea that weddings should be fun and personal. You don’t want to organise yourself out of your own wedding and spend the day feeling out of place in a sea of chair covers and sugared almonds. We won’t suit everyone. People looking for super-formal days, with waiters and waitresses swathed in black uniforms from head-to-toe, won’t be looking for us. People looking to hold their wedding in a back garden/ field/ tipi/ marquee/ village hall/ French farmhouse/ barn/ farm, will probably think we are more their cup of tea. We specialise in creating beautiful, relaxed days, as unique as the couples we work with. Our flowers are full and countrified and a bit on the wild

side. We tend to use seasonal flowers, there are no roses studded with diamanté or stiff gerberas here. We like cowparsley, old style roses and garden blooms, huge dahlias and dainty lily of the valley, anemones and ranunculuses and full blousey peonies; you get the picture. We have a shed load, well an olddairy-up-at-the-farm load, of props, china cups and crockery, metres and metres of homemade vintage fabric bunting, suitcases and vintage style market stalls for serving Pimm’s in jars or champagne cocktails. We are very proud of all our lovely staff. ‘The gang’ is made up of loads of lovely gals (and a couple of lovely boys), if you knew them you would want them to come to your wedding. As a team, we have put together lots of lovely days for lots of lovely couples; served hundreds

of ice creams from the icecream bike, marvelled at our amazing van-packing skills on our way to the wedding, and wondered how it never fits in as well on the way back. We have flowered a thousand trestle tables, and washed up a million billion trillion (okay slight exaggeration) cups and saucers, and almost driven ourselves bonkers trying to match them all up again. But the very best weddings, the most fun ones of all, are always the ones with the most fun people and the happiest couples. Though, having said that, I think our favourite wedding was one we did in the south of France last year, they were the most lovely couple, with a great gang of friends, and it being in a Provençal Farmhouse helped. www.petalandfeast.co.uk

LOVEEmily by Emily Pick

My top 3 wedding trends of 2014

Drama Queen After all the doom and gloom and recession after recession, I think the trend for drama couldn’t have come soon enough. Finally we’re seeing a little silver lining, and I say let’s run with it. Colour palette: All that glitters... team your sparkle-fest with a lavish deep blue for the ultimate velvety decadence. Venue: Why, your stately country pile of course! Decor: Oversized flower arrangements, tinkling chandeliers, gold-rimmed crystal glassware, banqueting tables, Grand piano. The dress: It’s got to stand out against the drama, so my advice is: GO FOR IT. Bright, bold & beautiful This is just so much fun. A chance to go wild with the paint box! Colour palette: Fuscia, burnt orange, dazzling blue, radiant orchid. Venue: Don’t worry too much; you’re going to drape it ;) Decor: Colour explosion; Mexican lanterns and bunting, patterned drapes and clashing flowers or bright drapes and hanging decor. The dress: Go with what suits your colouring and makes you feel happy.

www.bijoujunkie.co.uk

Quirky grows up I may well be going against the grain, but a HUGE sigh of relief passed my lips upon discovering the ‘Quirky’ trend had finally started to evolve... I mean, come one, how many little paper moustaches on sticks can one wear in a lifetime? Colour palette: Throw it out the window. It’s time to get innovative, think beyond the confines of colour and let your imagination run free! Venue: A festival style concept allows a lot of freedom. So; a field? If you want to do this indoors, choose a spacious and relaxed venue. Decor: This is where the fun starts. Rope in every artistic friend you have and get brainstorming. It’s time to get inspired by the wonders of Glastonbury LillyputAdvert.indd Festival, or better still, Burning Man. Make stuff! Be weird! Have fun! The dress: Something really unique/ whatever you’re drawn to.

Not only do Vintage Vacations have a very cool Airstream campsite near Ryde on the Isle of Wight, but they also have various holiday homes including a converted scout hall, a beach shack and a tin tabernacle. I have followed (and marvelled at) Vintage Vacations for a LONG time and I was lucky enough to stay in one of the Airstreams with my friends last summer. I met the owners, Helen and Frazer, and was very excited to hear about the amazing weddings they’ve held there. It’s absolutely ideal. Pop a marquee up in the centre of the campsite and your guests stay in the retro Airstreams. Perfect for a ‘trailer park trash’ themed event! Here’s what one of their guests,

I came across Lisa Sheridan at a wedding fair in the autumn. I was blown away by the rail of beautiful dresses before me. All vintage inspired, different fabrics from polka dots to florals – and all different styles. Of course this was just to showcase her collection but I say hey, put your bridesmaids in mismatching florals... or choose a fabric and have different styles to suit each girl. Lisa is a trained ladies-wear designer and even while studying she was designing dresses inspired by 1930s lingerie. Lisa previously designed lingerie and swimwear for M&S where she learnt a lot about structure and support in fashion design. It was after making her own 1950s inspired wedding dress in 2012 that Lisa decided to go freelance

There were many members of the family who had not seen each other for a long time and the site gave the perfect balance of privacy and togetherness for everyone. We had a really memorable weekend and have taken away some amazing memories. The caravans added that little bit of extra excitement as everyone wanted to show off their caravan and took pleasure in showing each other the quirky character of their home for the weekend.” www.vintagevacations.co.uk 07802 758113 info@vintagevacations.co.uk Helen

We can’t wait to see the project Lisa is currently working on. She’s collecting ideas and sketching designs for a GOLD wedding dress! She has uttered the words ‘Chantilly lace’. It’s going to be a showstopper. Lisa charges £120 + fabric costs for a bridesmaid dress and £700 + fabric costs for a wedding dress. The All Important First Dance…

There are a number of categories that a first dance can fall under. There are the classics, the truly inspired, ones where it would seem the bride has got her way, ones where it would seem the groom has got his way and some fun tongue-in-cheek choices. See if you can guess which category these following songs fall under. Of course, for those who dread the thought of the first dance, and have booked ‘Stick It On’, you’ll have the option to do away with the first dance altogether and play the first DJ set instead.

The Best is Yet to Come Frank Sinatra You Do Something to Me Paul Weller Signed, Sealed and Delivered Stevie Wonder Make You Feel My Love Adele Waiting for a Girl Like You Julianne Hough & Diego Boneta To the End Blur Video Games Lana Del Rey Let Your Love Flow The Bellamy Brothers Why Do Fools Fall In Love The Overtones

Words and song choices by Rob Drysdale from Stick It On Entertainment www.stickiton.co.uk

Boombastic Shaggy

We also asked Rob for his top tips when choosing a wedding DJ: Try to set a realistic budget. The budget for entertainment often loses out to other elements of the day but a good DJ can be the difference between an empty and a packed dance floor. Word of mouth recommendations or a good testimonials page are essential when researching a DJ for your wedding. Photos and videos are a good barometer as you can get a feel of their energy, style and set up. Speak to or, even better, meet your DJ prior to the wedding to discuss all of the details relating to set up, first dance, special requests and playlist recommendations.

Flower School Brighton Tip...

For those brides who want to be on trend in 2014, the Pantone Color Institute (PCI) recently announced that the colour of 2014 is radiant orchid. This fuchsia hue with purple and pink undertones ‘encourages expanded creativity and originality’ and ‘radiates joy, love and health’ - perfect for a wedding we think! Luckily for brides, there are so many flowers that would fall into this category but some of our favourites are pinky purple roses, lilac freesias and lisianthus, purple anemone and gorgeous pink ranunculus!

words by Hester Lear

Check out www.weddinginateacup.co.uk for pictured products The lovely Hester from Wedding in a Teacup gives us some good advice when it comes to children at weddings... Rule one for kids at weddings: don’t feel over-responsible. They’ve come with their parents, who will bring nappies, snacks, toys... But it’s a good idea to arrange a children’s menu, and to give some thought to keeping the kids happy. If you’ve got lots of kids coming, and your budget is big, consider hiring a balloon artist or clown - the adults will love it too, and not only because their kids are entertained. If it’s a big family

wedding, and the cousins all know each other (or you’re part of a group of friends who meet up regularly) you’re sorted. Bribe the oldest ones to be in charge at separate kids’ tables, and get them to run treasure hunts or daub face paints. The speeches will never not be boring for kids though! How does a child sit still for that long? By being given a wonderful colouring-in set, that’s how. If you choose fairy wings and a super-hero cape, remember to bring scissors, so the child can proudly wear their creation for the rest of the reception! Sandcastle mats, perfect for

seaside weddings, can also be worn as hats… we feel a parade coming on. So that’s rule two - make your youngest guests feel special, not just tolerated, and they’re more likely to behave like little angels! We also have lovely gifts for the flower girl, and snap cards and special sweetie jars for child-friendly favours. Rule three - don’t worry! Your wedding will be a beautiful, magical spectacle that any child will be thrilled to be part of. And then there’s always the bliss of the dance floor.

Weddings are getting more and more creative, gone are the days of the pre-packaged ‘off the shelf’ wedding. Brides and grooms want to put their personal stamp on their big day and why not, there are some awesome venues and suppliers just looking for the challenge.

So why do you need a wedding planner? Well so many times I have witnessed the most organised person come apart at the seams when it comes to wedding plans. You think you can organise it all, but why would you want to? Anybody will tell you the day is a blur of friends and family and overwhelming emotions, do you really want to hear that the Pimm’s has run out, someone has put a cigarette out on a tablecloth

18

weddings

event manager seamlessly blends into the background making sure everyone is happy from the bride and groom (of course), to the guests and the suppliers. They make sure the day is on schedule and do any crisis management. I have been known to pull 150 ponchos out of my event kit so that the guests could watch a fire display in non-forecasted spitting rain! A good event manager will be experienced and, most of all, able to listen. It is not about their ideas, it’s about yours, but it’s their job to make your dreams into reality. So don’t worry, you will not be dictated to, but if you’re not feeling inspired they will be able to give you a few suggestions.

So the thing to consider is how much input you want. Event planners usually offer packages which can be tailor-made to your needs. You may be super organised and just want someone on the day to manage the event or maybe you want the works from the outset to help you with schedules, supplier negotiation, budget management etc. A good event manager has all these skills and more. Even with over 15 years experience in event management, I hired an on-the-day manager for my wedding as that was the last thing I wanted to do and it was the best money I spent.

Midlands based photographer Bethan Haywood Jones took our beautiful cover shot. Here she shares some of her favourite images and some snippets from her life. “I am a life hugging, light loving, mid-century modern, storytelling, adventure junkie, road tripping kind of a girl! I have a romantic heart that will not be tamed and have been living in a love story, with my fella John, for the last 15 years. I thrive on telling other people’s love stories through pictures. Family is the most important thing to me; my mum, dad and three sisters are my ultimate heroes and guide me through life still. Natural light makes my heart sing. I live in an old school with massive windows Friends that feed my light addiction every day. Alternative Honeymoons

While two weeks on an island in the Maldives DOES sound rather appealing, here at Doily Days HQ we get more excited about unique ideas. And by that we mean design and experience. We share with you some of our favourites from the UK to the US.

Treehotel Sweden

Set high in a beautiful pine forest, 60km south of the Arctic Circle, the Treehotel is a high-design, back-to-nature retreat where guests can slow down, switch off and breathe more deeply. With the help of some visionary architects, owners Britta and Kent Lindvall have created a slice of magic that not only combines childhood fantasies of sleeping in the trees, but manages to do so with comfort, sophistication and the lightest of environmental footprints. There are six unique tree houses designed by six different architects. A suggested five-day break combines a two-night stay at the Treehotel with two nights in Luleå and includes must-do Lapland activities such as snowmobiling and dogsledding. Open all year round, guests can experience the varying climates and seasons of this stunning part of Scandinavia, from the majestic displays of the Northern Lights in winter, to the midnight sun in the summer months. Summer activities include trekking, mountain biking and fishing. www.wexas.com Photo: Peter Lundstrom, WDO

Ranch Holidays USA

Cantering across the desert landscape, joining in with line dancers, watching a thrilling rodeo, sleeping out under the stars, huddled around a campfire swapping stories, living like a true cowboy. Ranch holidays are full of laughter and new experiences. You’ll need to consider which state to visit, whether you want a working, guest or resort ranch. Guest ranches provide the balance between an authentic experience and holiday comforts. An intimate experience, as many are hosted by the owners themselves. Working ranches are very hands on – from participating in cattle drives to assisting in branding cattle and mending fences. Accommodation is rustic, with the focus being on the activities. Resort ranches have swimming pools, tennis courts, golf, spas to unwind in... the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, with a bit of wine tasting thrown in too. Horse riding is not the only pastime to enjoy on a ranch holiday, you can also partake in white-water rafting, canoeing, mountain biking, camping and fishing. www.thamestravel.net Photo: The Lodge & Spa at Brush Creek, Wyoming, with Western & Oriental

Hüttenpalast Berlin

In summer 2009, events organiser Silke Lorenzen and designer Sarah Vollmer decided they wanted to create a space in which to do EVERYTHING. They wanted to combine their skills and introduce a space for creative exchange where people from all over the world could meet. They wanted to be hosts and designers. At some point it became clear: the ‘Agency for Everything’ would be a hotel. Maybe not a hotel in the classical sense, but who needs that in Berlin anyway? The duo found an old vacuum cleaner factory in their hometown of Neukölln and turned it into a cool caravan hotel, using clever design to preserve the inner beauty and vastness of the building. Each room has been designed by a different artist and has its own style. With a café and garden and common areas furnished with mixed items sourced in local Flohmärkte (flea markets) Hüttenpalast is right up our strasse (street). www.huettenpalast.de Photo: Jan Brockhaus

The Raft at Chigborough Near Malden (UK)

Cast off from the real world in a floating cabin on a sun-dappled lake. The raft has a pioneer feel, built using hand-sawn pine and tethered to the bottom of a small, tranquil lake. Inside is cosy and comfortable, with touches of the simple life. Take out the rowing boat, borrow a bike, stargaze through the old telescope or pick a book and just choose where to flop. There are teak recliners, a Lloyd Loom chair and squishy bean bags that can be tugged onto the deck. The cabin has a proper barbecue, but your fire pit and log store are on the bank. Cooking outside on the raft is a must. Hosts, Paul and Sam, run the family farm and fishery. The fish in your welcome pack comes from their own smokery. Nearby you’ll find tea rooms run by Tiptree jams, Blackwater Estuary for sea views, sailing and canoeing and Heybridge Basin where you can watch the boats and visit the seafood shack. www.canopyandstars.co.uk Photo: Canopy & Stars

Patchwork Present T he idea for Patchwork Present was born when Olivia Knight and her partner Laurie were planning their wedding. They’d been together for 10 years and had two children so they’d built their ‘nest’ and definitely didn’t need any more ‘stuff’. The one thing they were dreaming of was a family honeymoon to Cuba, so Olivia created a website which would become the prototype for Patchwork Present. Component parts of the trip were laid out on the website, a patchwork of images e.g. night in a boutique hotel, fishing trip, Cuba Libre, Carnival Costumes, Cuban Cigars, homemade dinner. Not only could Olivia and Laurie’s guests contribute to a gift they could afford but they could choose something personal. Laurie’s best man chose to buy his beer for the whole trip while Olivia’s Nan contributed to their accommodation to make sure the family had a bit of luxury on their adventure.

Storm in A 1930s Teacup Metrodeco Photos by www.velvetstorm.co.uk

When Metrodeco opened five years ago the owners wanted to bring the flamboyance and decadence of the 1930s to Brighton. Bringing their love of bygone days, particularly the 1930s and 40s, together with their passion for tea, they found their niche almost immediately with their fabulous vintage afternoon teas. Soon the bookings diary was full of discerning groups, who had eschewed the idea of a modern stag or hen party and as their pampered hens and stags often asked about other vintageinspired things to do in Brighton they realised that, together with their professional staff and range of talented contacts, they had the knowledge and expertise to add something more to the afternoon tea experience. They now offer vintage-themed hen and stag packages for those who want something a

little more sophisticated than a nightclub or naked butlers. This can include vintage styling and cocktails in the lovely tea rooms as well as Gentlemen’s Tea Parties with whisky or gin tasting sessions. They even offer burlesque dance performances and lessons. As word spread, with a hush and a whisper, they refurbished the almost-hidden downstairs area and have recently unveiled a new Prohibition-themed dining room and lounge, primarily to host wedding parties and hen parties but great for other celebrations too. Though their afternoon tea is still very popular, they are now offering a high tea experience too, think scrambled eggs and cheese on toast and posh pies to add to the fancies of afternoon tea. Moving through to the evening they seek to create the glitz and glamour of this bygone era, like a scene from

The Great Gatsby. Their guests are treated to romance, swing jazz, art deco furniture and, of course, vintage-themed tea cocktails. Their vodka-based fruity infusion ‘Divinely Decadent’ is the out and out favourite to this day, but the ‘Metrodeco Devil’ (lemon and ginger green tea with gin) and ‘Graham’s Ruin’ (chocolate and rum green tea cocktail) are just behind. Through entertaining at the tearoom ‘Metrodeco Events’ was born to cater for weddings and celebrations at chosen venues. They can cater on the big day itself with afternoon tea, decadent Canapés and posh buffet food as well as tea and Champagne cocktails. They go to all sorts of venues and can cover every detail – as little or as much as is required – from flowers and favours to

exotic tents and design. Their attentive staff dress to suit the occasion too.

“The brief for my hair was ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’!”

“We wanted the reception venue to be a bit different, but very ‘London’ and the Union Club fitted that perfectly. You don’t need much additional decoration as it’s already so eclectic and visually stimulating.”

“Music is important to both of us. Although we have very different tastes, they overlap significantly, 1950s and 60s pop music (especially the Italian kitsch kind!) for example, so we decided to try and find a specialist DJ. We found Auntie Maureen online.”

“We were keen to have outfits we could wear again. Saladin had no idea what my dress was like and I had no say in his outfit, so we were both pleasantly surprised at how well our outfits went together!”

“ For our first dance we choreographed a routine to Sammy Davies Jr’s Something’s Gotta Give.”

“We had no colour theme, the brief for the Flower Appreciation Society was just colourful and seasonal.”

Southend Barns words by Rachel Soothill Set on a working farm in the stunning West Sussex countryside, Southend Barns wedding venue was opened in early 2012 by Mariella and William Fleming. The farm buildings were originally used to house the cows when the farm operated as a dairy business. However, the buildings and beautiful landscaped gardens have since been converted and have quickly become the wedding venue of choice for couples that come from far and wide. The lovingly restored barn complex features a magnificent 200-year-old Threshing Barn, which radiates rustic charm with authentic wooden beams and iron wrought chandeliers. This, combined with stylish contemporary touches such as the unique concrete polished floor, makes the barn an ideal venue for any wedding party. The barn can accommodate up to 150 for a sit down meal and

40

weddings

up to 200 for the evening party. Working in partnership with Sam and Janet Mahoney, the couple behind Field & Fork, all the food served at the venue is sourced locally and cooked onsite in the purpose built kitchen. Sitting adjacent to the Threshing Barn is the Dairy Barn, which is fully licensed for all civil ceremonies and partnerships. With a wonderful sweeping 22 metre aisle and handmade sweet chestnut benches that can seat up to 150, the barn is an idyllic setting for loved ones to exchange their vows. Couples can also make use of the calm and luxurious surroundings of the bridal suite, which is located in its own private courtyard. Once used as a dairy parlour it has now been revamped with contemporary interiors complete with driftwood mirrors, lavish rugs and a log fire, which will be lit and ready for the couple’s return

along with a bottle of local Tinwood Sparkling Wine. There is ample outdoor space with a picturesque courtyard that lies at the heart of the venue, with its luscious lawn, well-kept pots and Cornish slate patio lined with dairy inspired milk churns – it is the perfect spot for photographs and for mingling with guests over drinks and canapés. As evening falls, the gardens are lit with romantic up-lights that show off the fantastic flint and log walls of the wedding barns. Here guests can gather around the relaxing Collecting Yard with its sumptuous sofas and fire pits to enjoy a truly magical evening setting; the perfect end to a perfect day. For more information about Southend Barns please visit www.southendbarns.co.uk, call 01243 641247 or email enquiries@southendfarms.co.uk.

The Pearl Tent Company

In issue 1 we featured The Arabian Tent Company, in issue 2 The Complete Chillout Company, and in this issue we’re pleased to catch up with Katherine Hudson again to chat about her other business, The Pearl Tent Company. What kind of parties lend themselves to a Pearl Tent? Pearl Tents make a real statement and are perfect for recreating a Great Gatsby/ 1920’s Hollywood wedding, think glittering crystal chandeliers hanging from the vaulted ceiling and oversized floral displays adorning shiny mirrored bars.

42

weddings

What exciting parties have you been to with Pearl Tents? Well, let’s just say, this was the structure that Kate Moss set her heart on for her wedding day... What other elements can you help with? Flooring and lighting are included in the hire price, and we can provide pretty much anything else you desire! We adore props and furniture, and have spent our lives coveting, collecting and admiring things, storing up ideas for the future. We’re currently working on a circular fibre optic bar, but apart from that we have dining

furniture, pom poms, fretwood screens, lounge furniture, dance floors, LED trees and so much more. We’re not very imaginative, are you able to give us some ideas? Yes! At the moment, we’re working on an incredible overlay design, a Mexican, ‘day of the dead’ inspired colourful pattern-fest of a backdrop, complete with lace background and pom poms! www.thepearltentcompany.com info@thepearltentcompany.com 0800 8815 377

Cake to suit every mood... Once upon a time in a far away land and in a not so distant time, in and amongst the pebbles on the beach and in view of the old pier, there lived a young girl. Now this girl was no ordinary girl and she believed, with all her heart (and then some), that tea should be drunk out of china teacups and that cake should be eaten at least once a day, everyday and as regularly as clockwork. It was an excellent tonic for the heart and the soul and the constitution. If only, she often thought to herself, one could have a different cake for every day of the week, plain for a Monday and fancy with whipped cream and berries on a Sunday.

Beautifully handcrafted bespoke wedding cakes made to suit your individual needs. Please contact Melody Razak for a one to one consultation:

44

weddings

And what, and this was her other thought, if there was a cake to suit every mood, every lull and every high? Would the world be a better, calmer, more delightful place? She would sit on the beach and stare at the sea and imagine a little shop with teas that were infusions that put you to sleep and others that were brewed to help you awake and strong aromatic coffees and of course rows and rows as far as the eye could see, of cake and tarts and other sweet treats... this was indeed a dream worth pursuing. Eclectic Table Styling

I’ve been working in the wedding industry since I launched Doily Days in 2009. I’ve been involved in many styling projects – from designing a retro living room to hanging lampshades in the woods, to collecting deck chairs and hanging giant pom poms from beams – but my real passion lies in table styling. Even when I worked abroad in private villas, more than 10 years ago, I loved picking wild flowers for centrepieces, collecting petals to spread over the dinner tables and folding napkins into beautiful designs. Doily Days started with vintage crockery. I love how, using mismatch crockery, glassware

and centrepieces, you can make tables look interesting, unique and inviting. To keep things ‘current’ I’m now looking at lifting the vintage look with pops of colour – modern, colourful plates, flowers in eclectic receptacles and curious props. It won’t be to everyone’s taste but I say... anything goes! From rubber ducks to cacti to old books to kitsch ornaments (take a look at our glittery tutorial on page 10). We have a hoard of props so if you’re interested in our centrepiece styling please contact us: helen@doilydays.co.uk www.doilydays.co.uk 07795 076 553

We work with Donna of Fabulous Flora for the beautiful floral designs: www.fabulousflora.co.uk Mismatch main plates are available via Doily Days. All our vintage plates are in excellent condition and there isn’t a single one we don’t love. We can recommend suppliers for colourful glassware and further selections of vintage and retro crockery.

second Inspire hand rose

Being a second hand rose need not be a nightmare. Erica Arnold from Real Green Dress shares her top tips when it comes to shopping for a vintage wedding dress. 1. Start with the foundation and wear the right shape underwear for trying on. For styles from the twenties to early thirties go for something soft and supporting, for the forties to the sixties pointy and perky is the way to go. 2. A long-line bra like the Doreen by Triumph will comfortably nip a couple of inches off your waist too and it won’t bust your budget! 3. Choose a gown or veil that has already been professionally cleaned. Buying a bargain that ‘smells musty from storage’or ‘only

has a few stains that will probably come out with cleaning’ is taking a big gamble. Restoration costs can be expensive but before having a go yourself, get some specialist advice. Cleaning aged textiles can result in disaster for the item and may even be a risk to your health. 4. Don’t be shy. A reputable dealer will be happy to answer your questions and offer advice on altering a gown or accessories to suit your plans. A lace dress could be reinforced for energetic dancing or a vintage head dress adapted to suit a windy outdoor

ceremony. Look inside for the seam allowance as gowns can often be let out as well as taken in for a perfect fit. 5. For before and after your big day The Institute of Conservation has a useful leaflet on their website for the care and conservation of textiles. www.icon.org.uk Visit Real Green Dress at their shop in Farnham, Surrey, view their dresses online or find them at a vintage wedding fair. www.realgreendress.com

Tipitastic words by Becky Wilson If you’re having an outdoor wedding why not hold it in a tipi? Tentario give us 10 reasons why tipis are the perfect choice. 1. They are unique and original! Not many of your guests will have seen them before and they offer a quirky, fun alternative to a marquee or hotel. 2. You can have your wedding in your garden - what more intimate way to spend your wedding day? The tipis create a warm, welcoming and cosy feel and if you’ve got the space, why not make the most of it? 3. If you’d prefer a farm to create a festival feel, somewhere with a lake in the background, or somewhere you and your guests can camp, you can leave it to the team at Tentario to find you the perfect location. 4. Have it all your way, be it a tea party or a more formal dinner - you don’t have to conform to anything. The tipis can be combined together, enabling you to create the perfect

50

weddings

sized area depending on your wedding party. 5. For a summer wedding you get the best of both worlds. You have the security of being under cover in case of bad weather but on a beautiful sunny day the sides of the tipis can be lifted which means you don’t lose the outdoor element. 6. Equally, the tipis create the perfect setting for a winter wedding, by having the sides down it creates a cosy feeling and, once combined with fireplace, fairy lights, a few heaters and lounge seating, your guests won’t want to leave! 7. The tipis are made in Sweden and, with their wooden poles and beige canvas, they remain relatively unchanged from their Swedish origins and fit in perfectly with rustic, outdoor surroundings. They look beautiful with minimum decoration such as fairy lights. 8. Alternatively the tipis allow so much creativity, they’re a real

blank canvas! You can transform it to fit in with the style of your wedding. In terms of decoration, your imagination is the limit - fairy lights, bunting, lanterns. 9. The tipis are set up in advance so you have time to decorate, have a rehearsal dinner party, or do whatever you please! 10. The party doesn’t have to stop at midnight. Unlike many hotels, there is no curfew so you and your guests can keep going until your dancing feet have had enough! To find out a bit more about Tentario’s tipis, please call 01273 273 314 or visit the website: www.tentario.co.uk Tentario are holding an open day on Saturday 29th March 2014, so if you’d like to see these magnificent structures in all their glory, put the date in your diary! The beauty sp t by Kitty-Boo If you’re having a relaxed, boho style summer wedding, you may want to have your hair flowing freely or braided beautifully and accessorised with flowers. A quirky wedding with retro touches calls out for a vintage do to add a fun and classic touch to your day. If you’re going for a more formal wedding, a sleek up do or chignon oozes elegance.

Jenny Rutterford Photography

S

o you’ve booked your venue and you’ve chosen the perfect dress. Next is to find the perfect hairstyle to compliment your day. Firstly, I recommend putting a mood board together of all of your favourite hairstyles. Seeing the hair next to images of your dress, flowers and decorations, will really give you an idea of how it will all gel together. Take a look at my boards for some inspiration www.pinterest.com/ kittyboocollins.

When looking at hairstyles, be realistic. Unless your hair holds its shape well, or you much prefer to wear your hair down, then I would recommend having an up do, or half up, for all day long durability. If your hair doesn’t keep a curl for very long, then steer clear of curls, and if your hair is fine, then maybe look into styles that can add volume and height. I think that the theme of your wedding and the style of your dress play a big part in the decision making of your hairstyle.

I always find that with make-up , brides want that flawless skin with a natural essence. You want skin to glow and eyes to die for. My makeup kit holds wonderful creations from Mac and Kryolan to give that outstanding, long-lasting finish. I offer affordable hair and makeup services from my studio on Shoreham beach. You can book a wedding trial with me, where we can go through all of your options and try out some looks to find your perfect creation. I also offer hair styling and make-up for hen parties.

The BugBar

58

weddings

I

s it a bar, is it a DJ booth, is it a campervan? Yes, it’s all of those except it’s not technically a campervan but a clever caravan trailer conversion. The Bugbar is however, three very cool concepts rolled into a neat and compact fun wagon moonlighting as a bar, a DJ booth and a gourmet café in one. It’s red and bold and retro styled and great if you like campervans, festivals, music, food and booze… which we do! What’s not to love eh? If red is not your thing then apparently there’s another BugBar on the horizon which is blue and pink. Imagine your guests getting

their groove on with the Bugbar serving up delightful food and drinks at your festival themed wedding. It is after all a well-travelled bug, having been present at some of 2013’s top festivals including Bestival, Lattitude and the Secret Garden Party. It would be cool to add your own wedding day celebration to this little van’s history too don’t you think? The Bugbar is packed full of cheeky retro charm, a real talking piece and a crowd pleaser at any event. Here at Doily Days we like how versatile the Bugbar is. One

minute you could be quaffing the finest champagne served from its quirky interior and then later be tearing up the dance floor (field!) to top tunes being pumped out by the DJ with a full on light show going on overhead. But this little gem of a bar can even host a silent disco if the olds don’t approve of such frivolity! Tribute to Helen’s Mum On 15th October 2013 my beautiful mother passed away in St Wilfred’s Hospice in Chichester following a short battle with cancer. She is the reason this magazine exists as she helped fund the first issue. She was very proud of my journey with Doily Days over the last four years and I’m so pleased she was able to be a part of it. Donations to St Wilfred’s Hospice would be gratefully received, the staff there were absolutely amazing. www.justgiving.com/stwilfrids/donate
