From the editor

We’re back with a brand new look! We have a lovely new logo and we’ve changed our paper stock. We think this lovely uncoated paper goes very nicely with our brand. What do you think? In this issue we’re thrilled to feature Angel & Dick’s beautiful vintage wedding in France, as featured on Channel 4’s Escape to the Chateau. Angel runs The Vintage Patisserie and I’ve always been a big fan of her style and what she’s achieved in her career. Their wedding oozes vintage elegance and timeless charm.

We have a very sophisticated cocktail for you to try from the boys at Gin & Bear It, an inspiring Q&A with floral goddess Harriet Parry and everything you always wanted to know about gingerbread (but were afraid to ask). Two Woods is the hot new woodland venue everyone’s talking about. At the point of going to print I’ve yet to visit but owner Jade has promised to light the fire, take me for a walk around the forest and make me a hot cup of my favourite drink in the barn. Sounds heavenly! We’ve squeezed in a few pictures from our styled shoot in Southsea. Southsea is the place that I now call home and I’ve had the best time getting to know fellow small business owners and wedding suppliers in the area. It’s a hub of creativity.

As an accessories designer leading workshops, Gina McAdam is often asked for hen party inspiration. Here are her top three ideas to accessorise your hen:

Vintage Glamour Step back in time and enjoy a full head-to-toe makeover. I lead many vintage fascinator-making classes for hens. Parties can include vintage-style games and a Champagne afternoon tea so it’s easy to make a day of it.

Burlesque and Performance Arts Many dance tutors will bring the class to you. I cannot recommend it highly enough, it’s an absolute blast with a group of friends. Sequins, fans and cami-knickers are a must!

Festival Some brides-to-be are choosing to make their own fantasy headdresses. Feathers are always popular. Your creations can be worn out on the town, and indeed on the big day itself! Whatever you choose, remember to have a designated photographer in your party (professional shots make all the difference) and make sure you bring a little gift for each of your guests to show your appreciation. Custom-made vs off-the-peg which one is for you? One of the wedding highlights for a bride is THE DRESS! Some are lucky and know just what they want and where to get it, others don’t know where to start. Here are a few of my top tips to help you decide!

Commitment

Make an appointment at any bridal boutique and you will have lots of options. You can walk in, try on and take your dress home (if you find ‘the one’!). You may need to compromise on a few things as these dresses are mass produced but that’s one thing off the list and hanging in your wardrobe. Having a dress custom made can be a lengthy process, sometimes taking up to a year to complete. It’s a time commitment for you and you may need to travel to fittings. If you want creative input into your dress and a truly unique experience then look into getting your dress designed and made especially for you.

Cost

Having a dress made may not be as expensive as you think. Most designers will work to the budget you set taking into account all your requirements. And the dress will fit perfectly at the end. An off-the-peg dress will often need to be altered to fit so expect to pay an amount ON TOP of the dress cost.

Tara designs dresses from her quaint studio by the sea in Hastings Old Town www.taradeighton.co.uk

Be creative

Going the custom route means you can really have fun and be creative. You want your vows embroidered/favourite artwork printed/the dress from your favourite film copied – no problem! The options are limitless when going custom. There’s very little room to be creative when you buy a dress off-the-peg.

Heirloom

You will love and cherish your custom dress and it will be a beautiful piece that can be passed down to daughters and granddaughters through the years. Whatever dress you choose, have a really wonderful day!

Do you have an ‘our song’ or are you panicking that you don’t? Are you a stickler for tradition or would you like to shake things up a little at your wedding? Maybe your beloved didn’t make you a mix tape (Google ‘cassette tape’ young folk). Not every couple has a special song and not everyone wants to sway along to a Celine Dion power ballad for their first dance. Whatever tune you choose, you want it to be memorable, whether it’s for the heartfelt lyrics or for being the track that got everyone up and dancing. Before you go off creating some John Legend/Elvis/One Direction mash-up, here’s my top twenty first dance tunes (in no particular order) featuring indie classics, soul greats, dance, rock ballads and the odd hipster one too:

AUBREY’S REVENGE We dearly love our Morris Minor, Aubrey, but he is an old man and can be a cranky sod. It’s fair to say that he does get a lot of use and serves us extremely well in general. Occasionally though he can get his own back and leave us on the side of the road sipping cocktails while he cools down a bit. Aubrey’s Revenge is perfect for just such an occasion, though we would not recommend getting back behind the wheel after a couple of these.

INGREDIENTS

SERVES TWO

100ML LONDON DRY GIN 50ML SLOE GIN 50ML LILLET BLANC 15ML MARASCHINO LIQUEUR 30ML ORANGE JUICE 15ML HONEY SYRUP 250ML FENTIMANS VICTORIAN LEMONADE 2 LARGE MINT SPRIGS 2 THIN LEMON WEDGES 2 LARGE ORANGE TWISTS

METHOD In a cocktail shaker, over lots of ice, mix gin, sloe gin, lillet blanc, maraschino liqueur, orange juice and honey syrup. Shake vigorously. Fill 2 highball glasses with ice and divide the contents of the shaker between them. Add the lemon wedges, mint and orange twist and top up with Victorian Lemonade. This refreshing drink packs a wallop so drink responsibly, but after a day of car maintenance you will certainly have earned it.

Everything you always wanted to know about GINGERBREAD (but were afraid to ask) We love London-based Maid of Gingerbread so we investigated some gingerbread facts The biggest thing Maid of Gingerbread has made is a Hogwarts-style castle that was featured on Michael Buble’s ITV Christmas special a few years ago.

Originating in the East, gingerbread is said to have been brought to Europe in 992 by a monk and was used to treat indigestion and upset stomachs.

In 15th-century Germany, gingerbread was taken so seriously one had to belong to a gingerbread guild in order to bake it.

Maid of Gingerbread are planning a big edible centrepiece for Harrods this Christmas which is hopefully going to include moving parts and sound!

Emily from Maid of Gingerbread uses different types of gingerbread depending on the type of structure; German Lebkuchen style recipe is non-brittle and good for internal structures whereas dark, treacly gingerbread biscuit is ideal for contrast work and building boxes.

In the 16th century, gingerbread was used to create news displays by pressing the rolled dough into carved wooden molds before baking. It often showed the portrait of a new king or religious symbol.

After the Brothers Grimm published Hansel & Gretel in the 19th century gingerbread houses became very popular in Germany.

When building something in 3D, Emily from Maid of Gingerbread files down the edges of each biscuit using a cheese grater to make the joints fit together perfectly.

The world’s largest gingerbread house was built in Minnesota in 2001. It took 9 days to build, stood 67 feet tall, was decorated with 1,800 Hershey bars, 1,200 feet of twizzlers, 100 pounds of tootsie rolls, 100 whirly pops and thousands of other pieces of candy.

These are amazing little things! Cheap as chips and versatile too; use to decorate a plain cake or dessert to give real wow factor, bag up a couple in your colour scheme to use as favours or make mini Pavlovas and top with different fruits and chocolates - perfect for a rainbow colour dessert table! At The Garden Chef we love to make food look beautiful and give it a really personal touch without unnecessary expense. They are so simple to make, give it a go!

28

Ingredients 10 egg whites 285g caster sugar 120g icing sugar Equipment you will need: A food mixer or electric whisk Baking sheets and parchment Plastic piping bags Food colouring gels Patience You can also add any flavours you like too, my favourites are rhubarb and custard or watermelon. But you can go mad with colour and flavour combos.

Method In a very clean bowl whisk your egg whites to really stiff peaks, add your mixed sugars a big spoonful at a time letting the mix come back to being really stiff each time. When the sugar is all combined you are ready for the fun part. Add any flavouring now and fold in gently. Grab your piping bag and cut off the end so you have a hole about the size of a 20p (or smaller if you want to make baby ones) Hold the end and turn half the bag back over your hand. Using the end of a fork, or knife put stripes of colour up the inside of the bag. Spoon in the meringue mix and pipe out your kisses onto a baking tray lined with parchment. Pull the bag away quickly to make the little drip tops. You can do as many or as few as you like, washing the bag, drying well and applying a different colour. Bake at 100°c for approx 40 mins and you should have a perfect mallow-middled kiss! A good test is to lift one, if it comes away easily and you can tap the base it’s ready.

Real Wedding

A Curious & Wonderous Wedding at Chateau-de-la-Motte Husson.

Dapper Chaps & 40s Inspired Elegance “The look for us was simply ‘the Strawbridge’s at their best’. For Dick it was ‘country gentleman’ and for me it was 1940s inspired elegance. I took the pattern from the dress that I first met Dick in, it was a very simple 1940s wiggle dress. I had it made in a beautiful cream silk and I wore a cape. My mum and dad gave me a 1920s emerald and diamond broach that I’m so scared to wear, but I wore it and felt a million dollars.”

The Portrait Machine At Doily Days HQ we love a bit of quirk, and we tend to like people who are a tad… how can we put this?... Off the wall. Meet artist Amy Pennington aka The Portrait Machine! Amy spends her weekends sitting in a box at weddings, taking tokens from guests through a tiny hole, drawing portraits of said guests (eyeing them up through her ‘viewing box’) before ‘vending’ them by hand. Is she the Banksy of the wedding world? Does anyone see her face? Or does she sneak out while you’re busy with the first dance?

“We saw a barn with huge potential, a forgotten forest, a beautiful meadow and we fell in love...” Two Woods is an exciting new woodland venue in Sussex that we think our readers are going to love! We caught up with owner Jade and found out what inspired her and husband Mark to embark on this dream project. “Initially we were set to move to Devon to run holiday cottages with occasional weddings, but due to family health issues we decided to stay in Sussex. After a week of looking, we came across a small 42 acre estate in Pulborough, Originally called Blakewood and The Blue Coconut Club. The Blue Coconut was a private members sporting and music venue, founded in 1987 by a very talented singer-songwriter Jimmy Lee. In its heyday it was a very well known music club with famous people both playing at and frequenting the club. I walked around the estate and behind a fence and battered gate I found an acre of Redwoods. I was moved to tears by the beauty of the trees that created a cathedral like affect, reaching to the sky, with a natural aisle running through the middle. It was here our dream began, this had to be the perfect place to get married! Slowly we cleared the woods which had been used to pen pheasants and Mark built a small

oak shelter, which is now licensed for weddings. After 18 months of extensive renovation, the barn now has a beautiful licensed bar, hand-crafted from Scottish Elm, a main room with open fire which can seat up to 120, a pretty woodland barn garden, and a stunning bridal loft. Our 32 acres of woodland and 10 acres of meadow are managed for conservation and wildlife with a grant from the forestry commission. The deer are frequent visitors to the meadow, with buzzards soaring above. Tawny owls hoot in the woods at night and the badgers have their own secret spot. We are very passionate about the wildlife, they are the ones that live at Two Woods, we just share their space. We try to make Two Woods as relaxed as possible as a venue. Couples who book on a Saturday have Friday from noon for set up and if their guests are camping they don’t have to leave until 1pm on Sunday, leaving plenty of time for breakfast cooked on the fire pit. Teeny-weeny weddings for 2 to 10 people run midweek and some winter weekends. Prices include Champagne, afternoon tea, honeymoon night in the bridal suite, and can include a stay for four friends in our vintage vans.”

The Importance of Wedding Invitations “The bedroom was dappled in confetti shadows. I had a cup of tea nestled in my lap and was swimming between the words of a good book when there was a ra-tat-tat at the door. Opening the door, I was handed a delicate envelope embossed with a floral vintage stamp, inscribed in curved inky calligraphy. It felt special. I peeled the envelope open and a beautiful wedding invitation was unveiled. A small paper-bound booklet adorned with bespoke illustrations on every page chronicling the big day. I was excited and even though I had months to wait, I set to planning my outfit.” Aside from providing your guests with key information about the day, date, time, venue, an invitation should hint at the tone of your wedding, exude excitement for the day ahead and commence the celebrations of two people brought together by love. Couples often express concern that invitations are a costly outlay for something that is going to be thrown in the bin. We’ve all received an invite that feels generic, safe or lack-lustre. But an invitation that is original, joyous and designed with the couple in mind becomes a cherished keepsake of a day two people were married and the wonderful celebrations that took place. Whether you are planning to craft the invitations yourself, buy a pre-made design or consult with a stationer to create something bespoke, take the time to choose something that is right for you as a couple. It needs to be special, joyful and a little piece of your big day.

SO U T H S EA ST Y L E D S H O O T B Y CA RRIE L A VE RS Doily Days and The Vintage Parade put on The Wonderous Wedding Fair in Southsea, Portsmouth in November. Exhibitors were invited to take part in a styled shoot which was photographed by Winchester-based Carrie Lavers. “When I heard about The Wonderous Wedding Fair it sounded a perfect fit for my photography style,” explains Carrie, “being new to the area I thought the photo shoot would be a great opportunity to meet some new people who have the love of weddings and vintage in common. We had the best day and loved the results.” Our cover image is from the shoot, taken in Southsea’s Pie & Vinyl, a quirky record store who also serve pie and mash. They provide outside catering and DJ services for weddings and come highly recommended! www.pieandvinyl.co.uk
