From the editor

I start working on the spring issue in January. Checking out new advertisers and coming up with features is an excellent way for me to start my year and visualise summer shindigs. Come March it’s time for me to emerge from hibernation and get on with distribution, and I love it! The small business owners you’ll find within these pages and I all share a passion for quirky and unique celebrations, and that’s really celebrated at spring wedding fairs. Most Curious in London is a must for me, it’s such a cool show and really highlights what we’ll be seeing lots of, at weddings, in the year to come.

Real Weddings 32

Emily & Steve – Wedfest

This year I’m also excited about a brand new event, Sussex Wed Fest which is an outdoor wedding fair taking place on 4th June at Two Woods near Pulborough (an incredible venue that we featured in our last issue, where the great outdoors meets luxury and comfort). Sussex Wed Fest is set to be an all-singing, all-dancing event like no other; think wandering around in the sunshine with your friends, drinks in hand, listening to the music, the smell of spit-roasted lamb in the air. There’ll be campervans, horse boxes and so much more. We can’t wait!

Compiling the Insta Cake Love feature was a favourite of mine this issue. It really did make me marvel at such incredible talent and gave me a great excuse to browse Instagram for hours! I’m really thrilled, and grateful for the contributions to this issue (and every issue); we’ve got first dance recommendations from The Swing Ninjas, a naughty milkshake recipe from Four Gables, giant balloons from The Feather Balloon Company up for grabs in our competition… and plenty more! ENJOY! And, as always, I’d love your feedback.

Q&A WITH CELEBRANT CLAIRE BRADFORD Claire Bradford creates and conducts unforgettable wedding ceremonies filled with your personalities and style

6

Hi Claire! Firstly we want to know what you love about being a wedding celebrant? Getting to know the incredible couples I work with, hearing their story and having belly laughs with them whilst creating their dream ceremony. Then there’s the huge privilege of being trusted to play such an important role in their big day of course! (oh, and canapés, obvs…)

What would be your advice to couples regarding choosing the right ceremony for them? Discuss between you what’s important to you about your day, what you want (and what you really don’t want!). Be open to suggestions from wedding professionals but stick to your guns and don’t compromise your ideals for Aunt Mabel or anyone else, or you’ll regret it later.

Tell us about some of the more unusual ceremonies you’ve conducted I’ve conducted a wedding under an ancient oak tree, one by a lake (with the family dog taking a dip during the ceremony), and a handfasting in a field. There’s also the ceremony at a couple’s ‘forevering festival’. Oh, and one bride stopped the service to ask her groom if they could get a puppy…

What is your background and how did you train to become a celebrant? I was a life coach for 14 years. I worked with people 1-2-1, quickly finding out what was important to them, as well as writing articles and giving talks. When I trained as a celebrant with the FPC, I realised I already had all the ingredients but now had a better recipe.

How do you get to know your couples before the big day? I meet with couples at their home at least twice to share ideas, dreams (and fears) about their big day. I’m at the end of the phone or email all the way through the planning process too, and I encourage them to use me a ‘human Pinterest board’!

Can you help us with our vows? Absolutely. Whether you want me to write them for you or you want to write your own but need a bit of help, I’m on hand all the way. Want to keep them secret? I can check they ‘match’ too, so you don’t risk clashing light-hearted vows with serious ones…

Can you give us a checklist of things to think about when it comes to your ceremony? Consider how you feel about standing up in front of everyone, whether you want a certain theme or ‘mood’, whether you want any religious or spiritual content, whether you want to involve your children, family or friends… Then discuss these ideas with me and I’ll magic up your dream ceremony!

Sweets for my Sweet The Ultimate in Childhood Nostalgia I had the pleasure of meeting fellow Southsea resident Dan Tonkin for a cuppa and a chat about his new business The Vintage Sweet Hut. It’s always brilliant to meet the people behind the enterprise because you really get a sense of the inspiration and the driving passion. It’s clear to me that Dan has a soft spot for wartime nostalgia and what he’s created is a mini 1940s experience for your guests; sweet treats, authentic props, vintage music to get your toes tapping and video portraying bygone days. The sun canopy, deck chairs and classic outdoor games add real practical elements for a balmy summer wedding and the hut makes a brilliant backdrop for photos… grab the photographer, and the bridesmaids and do a tongue-in-cheek, sickly-sweet mini-shoot with the gumball machine! Think Vogue fashion shoot. We love his slick branding, and the small touches, like the Dymo tape labels, show real style and attention to detail. Dan has done a great job of steering away from the traditional sweet cart, there’s not a mini ferris wheel or giant martini glass in sight! The hut can be fully stocked and left for your guests to help themselves or a ‘shopkeeper’ can be provided. If you don’t have room for the full set-up think about having bags of sweets served from the jolly butchers bike or old fashioned sweets as wedding favours. We’ll have a quarter of Rhubarb & Custard please…

Musings from a Bride- to-be The countdown is on for Ami & Maxwell as they prepare to tie the knot this summer … Maxwell and I live in a quirky old home in Southsea and we’ve been together since 2012. I feel we’re one of those couples you could pick out from a line up, as cheesy as it sounds I believe we’re made for each other. Maxwell proposed on Christmas Day in 2016 whilst we were holidaying in Orlando. We had a wonderful 2016 planning the wedding of our dreams. Not wanting anything traditional we’re planning a laid-back bohemian day surrounded by just close friends and family. We’re to be wed on 27/7/17 on Brighton Bandstand. We both love living by the sea so the idea of saying our vows by the water really appealed. For our reception we’re heading to Doily Days’ favourite The Secret Barn (see feature on page 42). When we saw the barn we just fell in love. The building, the surrounding nature, the Petal & Feast girls. It was all perfect! Both being creative (I run my own creative brand Mia Mai and Maxwell is a carpenter and shipwright) we were determined to do as much as we could to ensure the day was 100% us. I think so often, the reason two people decide to get married can often be forgotten, and things like the dress, the venue and other people’s opinions can all too easily take over. We wanted to be sure this didn’t happen so, from the invites, to the décor, cake and dress, we’re doing it all ourselves (with a little help from our friends). One thing we couldn’t DIY was the wedding photography, and it was the first thing we decided on after choosing our date. We knew Hayley as she’d photographed two of my best friends’ weddings and her relaxed images, and the way she captured their individual styles really appealed. I wanted someone I was comfortable with so I didn’t look horribly awkward and when Hayley suggested an engagement shoot we jumped at the chance! We spent a sunny but chilly day in November cuddling, jiggling and dancing our way along the beautiful Southsea seafront. The photos Hayley took are stunning and every time I look at them I can’t help but get the biggest smile on my face. Without being intrusive or overly directorial, she managed to get the perfect shot whilst still capturing ‘us’. Being a bride-to-be, I know it’s so easy to get caught up in the traditions, the things you ‘should’ do and the evergrowing to-do list, but I’m loving our wedding planning journey. So much so I started a monthly blog series which you can follow on www.lotales.wordpress.com.

By Ami Lowman We wish Ami and Maxwell all the best for their wedding and we can’t wait to see their photos!

The Swing Ninjas’ Guide to First Dances Having played many first dances over the course of our careers, we’ve seen dances that range from the intimate and shy to the extrovert and crazy. It really comes down to your personalities. The best and most successful we’ve seen have been either well prepared, fun-filled routines, often including a number of family members and friends or just a simple dance, but done with confidence - there is no benefit to nervous or shy first dances! Often you’ll dance alone and then be joined by the family - which breaks the ice and starts the dancing - but the extra effort to prepare a set dance (a simple swing dance routine goes a long way) really puts everyone in the party mood. After eating and drinking all day, it’s the band’s job to keep the party going, but it’s up to the bride and groom to make sure they show everyone how it’s done!

Booth Antics Photo booths give you ‘those’ photos – you know, the ones your photographer might struggle to get, but the ones your drunken mates are more than happy to provide. The curtain is only waist height, and it’s certainly not sound proof, so what is it about them that makes us SO naughty and silly? I find that inside that little space, it’s safe. You can go in just you, or as a couple, or try and fit your whole crew in. You can pivot, crouch down, have a smooch... anything goes in the booth but remember it’s all captured on camera! Having a photo booth as well as an awesome wedding photographer means your guests can take care of looking stupid in hats, leaving your photographer free to take care of your guests looking stupid on the dance floor. A truly well-rounded impression of your evening reception! The photo booth really kicks in at the point where you’ve already got some kind of food on your clothes, and it’s all starting to unravel as the DJ spins 5ive to the delight of all who’ve had a few sherberts. Photographs, however they are presented, are timeless and unrepeatable. They are a record and a memory and sometimes they’re actually hysterical. You can’t miss out on that! By Hana Laurie

The 1967 movie Valley of the Dolls (based on the book by Jacqueline Susann) follows the rise and fall of three starlets in New York who rely on their ‘dolls’ (pills) to get them through. The styling here is full of 1960s sugary shades, and the kitschtastic Hotel Pelirocco in Brighton provided the perfect backdrop.

Styled Shoot

“Every styled shoot I’ve done before tends to follow the same storyline and the same basic rules: everything exists in a state of ‘before’, each detail is pre-wedding perfect and untouched. Undeniably the results of those shoots are always beautiful, yet for this shoot we wanted to find ways to subvert that same old narrative.” Erika Szostak, PhotoMadly

“Of course weddings are sweet, romantic, elegant events, but do you know what else they are? They’re the best party most of us will ever throw. So they’re also mad, fun, messy affairs.” Erika Szostak, PhotoMadly

The Dresses “we had a legal ceremony two days before the wedding, so I had a simple dress for that. My dress for the ceremony was a bargain for £100. I didn’t see the point in spending loads on a dress that would get trashed after a few hours in the field. A few months before the wedding I spotted the sequin dress and decided it fitted the theme perfectly! I changed into it in the evening.”

DIY “we made flavoured gins, collected old gin bottles, homebrewed the beer and cider, handdried the confetti, spray-painted 400 pieces of cutlery copper and collected vintage china and rugs from car boot sales. My mum made all the bunting, cushions and pouffees for the chill out tent. Steve made the light up table plan and listed the order of the day on an old pallet.”

Emily’s Advice “Do lots of research using magazines, blogs and wedding fairs. Decide on the three most important things and compromise on everything else if budget is tight. Hire the best photographer you can afford, ours was amazing and really captured ‘us’. Also get a videographer if you can, I love watching our video back, you really get to see all the little things you might have missed on the day.”

A Secret Barn, Petals and Feasts… “Beams can be festooned with fairy lights, floorboards can be danced on, marshmallows can be toasted over the fire pit and seasoned campers can spend the night under canvas.” Planning a wedding can seem overwhelming. The initial rush of excitement over ‘all the pretty’ and imagining a relaxed day with your family and friends, can get swallowed by disheartening nights spent trawling through wedding venues that ‘just don’t get it’ on Google, yet another chicken dinner caterer, and some nice stiff flower arrangements of gerberas (maybe with diamante in them if you are really lucky). Before you know it your idea of an easy-going day filled with tasty food, free flowing booze and a good old knees up in the evening is becoming a distant memory, maybe this wedding lark is not for you? Fear not! If all these things have brought you out in a cold sweat and had you thinking of eloping, all is not lost... If you are looking for all of the wedding formalities, probably best to look away now. If, however, you are looking for something more relaxed, easy going and a bit different, (think rustic, seasonal, wildflowers, festoon lights, flowery dresses, plentiful, tasty food) we have that in spades! Being half ‘petal’ and half ‘feast’ we are all over the food and flower side of wedding-dom. Our menus can take you right

the way from canapés and welcome drinks through the main wedding feasts to evening munchies. Flowers go from DIY buckets through to giant flower hoops and bouquets. We also have the venue to go with it. Nestled down a quiet country lane in deepest, darkest West Sussex, behind the out buildings, tractors and cows, sits The Secret Barn, home to Petal and Feast; a place where weddings are made rather than churned out on a conveyor belt of nylon chair-covers and sugared almonds. Darling Buds of May style wedding blessings can be held in the orchard, surrounded by trees in various seasonal states of appleyness. Plentiful Petal & Feast canapés can be tucked into on the lawn, wedding feasts can be hoovered up in the barn, beams can be festooned with fairy lights, floorboards can be danced on, marshmallows can be toasted over the fire pit and seasoned campers can spend the night under canvas. The morning after, when everyone is a bit bleary, bacon sarnies, coffee and talk of the day before can ease the way into Sunday. Feel any better now?

Shot on Film Joanna Brown trained in photography when digital was not invented so it’s really at the heart of where she learnt her craft. She’s been shooting weddings for seven years and has always taken film cameras along. She uses 2 x 35mm cameras with black and white and colour film in each, a couple of Polaroids and a Diana camera. “I tend to use the 35mm for documentary,” Joanna explains “and then the others for the more static times of the day like portraiture and detail shots”. At the moment Joanna is shooting film as a second shooter, working in addition to a digital shooter. “Images shot on film are completely different to digital photographs,” says Joanna, “they are softer, more timeless, one-off pieces of art. It’s less about delivering hundreds of images, and it being a quieter, more artistic viewpoint of the day”.

Softer. Timeless. One-off pieces of art. For more examples of Joanna’s work, and to get in touch please visit www.joannabrownphotography.com

Post wedding, the lab processes and scans the film so it comes back as digital files but Joanna delivers prints to her couples as that’s the nature of the medium. She tells us she’s ready to shoot a whole wedding on film, standalone, something she’s wanted to do for a long time. “It would have to really be a small summer wedding,” explains Joanna, “and preferably a city wedding too as it really fits the grittier look and feel of film”.
