Features & Regulars

Welcome to issue 6! An issue to enjoy over the long winter months while you plan your big day. We print this magazine (would never have dreamt of doing it online only) because we love the idea of you settling down, with a cup of tea or a glass of wine, and enjoying the content. Tear out the pages, fold over the corners, we don’t mind! Our aim is to provide practical advice while offering something a little bit edgy and a bit different. From this issue we’re expanding our distribution area to include Kent. Hello Kent! We also distribute in Sussex, Hampshire, Surrey and London. Talking of Kent, we’re mega excited about Dreamland reopening in Margate! See our feature on page 6. We’re pretty excited about Margate in general to be honest. If you haven’t been it’s well worth a visit, make sure you check out the Turner Contemporary and Junk Deluxe (a vintage-lovers paradise!). It’s an amazing place for a hen or stag weekend. I love the bold and colourful graffiti shoot on pages 12 and 13, so much so we chose one of the images for the cover. I enjoyed putting together the Fiesta inspiration piece on page 48. Who needs a colour scheme when you can have EVERY colour? I personally put together the playlist in this issue. You might like some of my ideas to get YOUR party started. Emily gives us her thoughts on wedding dancing, in her regular column, on page 5. I hope you enjoy this issue and, as always, I love to receive feedback.

Wedding Dancing

Of all the wedding traditions, this must be the most abided by, and possibly the one that will make you look the most stupid. It’s late, you’ve been drinking all day, and now the music’s blaring and the grannies are a’swaying. Yeah, doing the conga and dancing on tables is great fun, it’s just a shame the wedding paps are always there to record it from all angles and often with telescopic zoom lenses…

G WEDDIN

HIRE

First dance: Rehearsed VS unrehearsed Would you rather watch as your good friends embarrass themselves, tripping over each other’s feet whilst trying to cast their best loving looks at each other. Awkwardly swaying to the music whilst being stared at by hundreds of pairs of eyes, or suddenly pulling out a polished routine, busting moves and strutting their stuff like a couple of prize Mick Jagger impersonators? Drunk dancing VS sober dancing Drunk and dangerous. Casually falling into the cake and perhaps crushing a few iPad-ridden small children on your way down… Or sober and awkward, trying your best to smile as Granddad pulls you into a ‘funky chicken-off’? Yes there can be embarrassments, but all in all we can’t give dancing at weddings the thumbs down... If you’re keen to make the most of your disco-time, there’s a few things to consider: 1) Music: Duh! I hear you cry, but think about what kind of music really gets the party started. Also, it’s best served live. Nothing better than a live band who will get your guests involved and whip them into a jiving frenzy. Best to ask for recommendations at this point, especially friends who go to lots of gigs and festivals (remember you DON’T have to stick to specific ‘wedding bands’). 2) Venue: It’s got to have a real party vibe, you don’t want your guests getting lost in the corners of some soulless space. Also, check the license. Not much dancing will be done if you have to turn the music off at 11pm... 3) Dance floor: Make sure it’s not too big… bigger spaces leave more gaps and therefore dilute the atmosphere, a packed dance floor = a fun party. So, there we have it, try not to embarrass yourself (and others) too much, consider the important factors duly, and I’m sure you’ll all have a proverbial ball.

The Ale Van

Dreamland Margate

The UK’s first beer festival on wheels stocks a selection of locally sourced, independently produced and award winning ale, cider and craft lager, from a converted 1980’s VW horse box.

Following a passionate 11-year ‘Save Dreamland’ campaign, the UK’s original pleasure park has reopened. Margate once again echoes with the sounds (and screams) of delight and wonder, as visitors old and young enjoy the Great British seaside experience. An ‘old fashioned, yet ohso-fashionable’ world of thrills, amusements and good times.

Travelling the South of England and beyond – from Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire, to Sussex, Surrey and the West Country – The Ale Van not only serves local beer from each region, but also beers produced for each season. Every pint is sourced direct from its respective brewery and served straight from the barrel alongside comprehensive tasting notes and a rating chart. The Ale Van also stocks a great selection of spirits including Pure Milk Vodka from Dorset and Watercress Gin from Winchester. www.thealevan.com

Where else could your wedding guests clamber aboard a host of stylishly restored retro rides and amusements from the golden age of the British seaside? Where else could your guests toast the start of your married life in the same room that the Rolling Stones and The Who performed in the 1960s? Where else could you celebrate your first dance as a couple on skates in a vintage styled roller disco? www.dreamland.co.uk

The Art of Dining

Dupenny

The Art of Dining is a collaboration between Moro-trained Chef, Ellen Parr, and set designer, Alice Hodge. They offer quirky, interactive popup dining experiences. For example, at their ‘After School Club’ in Hackney diners found their cutlery in a pencil case with a school tie and the welcome cocktail was a White Russian served in a milk bottle. Prizes, gold stars and punishments were dished out throughout the evening by a strict (yet highly entertaining) headmistress and there was music, English lessons and homework!

Emily Dupen is a Brighton-based illustrator who specialises in retro and vintage design. Her brand, Dupenny, which offers a range of playful boutique wallcoverings, fabrics and gifts, has seen worldwide success.

Make sure you check out the website for their past pop-ups such as Abigail’s Party (a real retro soiree) and Gone Camping (a proper dining adventure). We think their pop-ups are a fab idea for a hen party but they do wedding catering too.

Commissions include wedding invitations and stationery, favours, decorations and couple portraits – all featuring her signature vintage twist.

www.theartofdining.co.uk

www.dupenny.com

Emily will happily draw anything, but she has a passion for all things pin-up, retro, curious and a little bit cheeky. She loves the simple impact of black & white, people & characters and twisted humour.

An Intimate Relationship… With your photographer

W

hen it comes to wedding photography there is far more to the investment than just the money. You may not realise it when you sit down to look at photographers’ websites (sometimes until your eyes blur), but your wedding photographer needs to also be invested in you. And when I say invested I mean emotionally, psychologically, and whole-heartedly invested in you and your story. Of all the people at your wedding, your photographer will be with you the entire time. They will be in the midst of the emotions that will run throughout the day through you, your partner, your mother, your partner’s mother, and yes, maybe even your dog. Sure, photographers have a job to do but as they are doing that job they need to be present with you and in tune with you and your partner’s emotions. They

10

weddings

need to be empathic to you and your guests. They need to listen to the vows, listen to the toasts, listen to uncle Joe’s story about his time in the war, and they need to listen with interest and intent. Why, you may ask, does your photographer need to take so much on board? Because, truly meaningful wedding images don’t just capture, they emote. They tell an intimate, intricate story full of subtlety that has been woven, like a tapestry over time. Your guests have all played an important part in this process leading up to your wedding day. Your family and friends have all helped you to build your relationship with your partner, they all bear witness, they all celebrate, they all love. Your photographer needs to understand that and make sure that it is all

represented in your images. How and why does this impact your choice of wedding photographer? Every supplier at your wedding is a reflection of you. You want your guests to feel they are in good hands, especially with something as intimate as having their picture taken. We are at our most vulnerable when we love, so give yourselves the chance to get to know your photographer before your wedding (see if they include a pre-wedding shoot). Meet with all your prospective photographers, if you can’t meet them in person, Skype. Trust your feelings when you meet them, look at their nonwedding work too. Sure, one might have a killer style and be featured on loads of blogs but, if the newcomer with great images makes you feel like you’ve known them for ages, trust your heart. Remember it’s

what got you to this point in the first place. Jessica is a photographer specialising in weddings and other notable life events. She is based in Brighton and would love to hear about your upcoming wedding. Send an email to hello@ jessicamilberg.com or call 07401 539 093. Don’t forget to see what it’s all about, www. jessicamilberg.com (and, for the cheeky amongst you, check out her boudoir photography at www.lookingglassboudoir.com).

DOILY DAYS Mini Bar

DOILY DAYS MINI BAR W e love working on our magazine but we missed being at weddings! We missed meeting the caterers, the photographers, seeing your creative ideas, smelling your flowers, watching your first dance, laughing at your dad’s speech… So we decided to get back out there! “What do all good weddings need?” we thought… and being the booze hounds that we are, we decided on a bar. The full pop-up set comprises vintage wallpapered walls; complete with antlers, flying ducks and record covers, a fridge, and our 1950s ‘boat’ cocktail bar. It’s a fun backdrop for photos and a practical solution for a marquee, barn or

14

weddings

village hall. We need a 5m x 5m space and we transform it into a mini pub straight out of the 1950s! We operate as a cash bar and we can tailor welcome drinks to suit your event. How about going all out with the retro theme and having Babycham bottles with straws? Or Malibu and pineapple perhaps? We can provide the wine for your meal and fizz for your toast too.

In the summer we did a lovely garden party where we welcomed guests with Sangria and served Espresso Martinis at 10pm. They went down a treat! Especially with the bride’s dad who said he’d

happily drink them for breakfast! We also did a wedding in Kent where our draft ale from Black Cat Brewery kept the guests lubricated and Blueberry Mojitos kept us busy behind the bar. SO many limes! Here’s what our clients had to say: “From the first moment I contacted Helen at Doily Days she was professional, efficient and all round brilliant! We had a pop-up bar at our garden wedding in Sussex and it looked so much better than we had even imagined, it was a great talking (and gathering) point for everyone. The staff and Helen were lovely on the day, really calm, they just got on

and did everything we’d asked and more. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.” Zannah Marchland, July 2015 “We were delighted with your service in every way. The staff were great, very efficient, professional and looked the part. There was plenty of booze and the bar set-up and tables and chairs were perfect. You have a brilliant product and deserve every success in the future! Various people have commented on how good you were and that they would use your services for future events.” Anna Maimi, August 2015 www.doilydays.co.uk

Life is Beautiful...

Emma Latham (Freckle Photography) is responsible for our amazing cover image. We asked her to share some snippets from her life: “My work makes me so happy – capturing all the smiles, the laughter, the stolen looks across the room, the happy tears and all the unexpected moments that define a wedding day. I live in the most beautiful part of the world (Devon and yes I am biased) and I’m a truly outdoorsy type; I love nothing more than a blustery walk by the

sea, kayaking down the estuary at high tide or just kicking back in the garden looking up through the tree canopy at the sky. I love a pub lunch, a decent glass of Rioja, seeing friends for tea and nibbles and a spot of Pilates at the local WI hall. I’m also partial to Home and Away and dancing round the kitchen to 90’s RnB. Most of all I love taking time out with my favourite human – my husband Chris, and our cat Yeti.” www.frecklephotography.co.uk

ON THE ICING T H E CAKE Everything stops for tea… Surrey-based Dani, founder of The Icing on the Cake, used her maternity leave to work on starting her pop-up tea party catering business. Two years later the business has gone from strength to strength with Dani and her team working on weddings, baby showers, children’s parties and other private events. “My baby shower doubled up as my launch party” Dani laughs. “Seven and a half months pregnant I hosted a vintage tea party in the top floor of a wine bar where I catered for 35 of my favourite ladies.” Dani combined her passion for baking with her love for all things pretty and vintage. As well as mouth-watering homemade treats, Dani and her team (of tea maids and butlers!) will adorn your tables with lovely embroidered linens, vintage cutlery and crockery, flowers, tea lights and bespoke menu cards. “I love the fact that we’re giving these beautiful pieces of history a

client’s taste and style and she uses Pinterest for ideas. “I love using traditional recipes, but use modern techniques and design to make them current,” says Dani.

So, with the scene set, reminiscent of a 1930s tea parlour, what about the food? Afternoon tea prices start from £15.50 per head and include a selection of finger sandwiches, such as smoked salmon and lemon mayonnaise, free-range egg mayonnaise and cress and cucumber and cream cheese. Sweet treats include homemade fruit scones, with clotted cream and red berry jam; meringue kisses, rich chocolate brownies, chocolate éclairs, coconut macaroons, blueberry cake and good old cupcakes. All washed down with pots of English tea (little fingers in the air please!).

Her crockery collection has become a bit of an obsession, with individual pieces sourced from vintage markets, charity shops and car boot sales; they can easily accommodate 150 covers and the collection is evergrowing.

The prices include china hire, cutlery, staff and linens. Dani finds inspiration for her menus from old recipe books such as Mrs Beeton’s Cookbook that was her great grandmothers. She tailors bespoke menus to her

It’s possible to just hire the china, if you’ve already got your catering sorted, or why not ask Dani to provide a vintage cake table as an alternative to dessert or traditional wedding cake? Fully styled with beautiful linens and props, and laden with traditional, home-made delights. As well as the vintage china and props we’ve already mentioned, The Icing on the Cake can provide vintage glassware, bunting, fairy lights and chalk boards. www.theicingonthecake.info

Beautiful Gardens…

Bignor Park

Featured Venue

Bignor Park is an exclusive wedding venue in West Sussex. With eleven acres of beautiful gardens and breathtaking views across the South Downs, it epitomises rural elegance. Located in the National Park, eleven miles north east of Chichester, and just south of Petworth, the privately owned estate, tucked down a ½ mile drive, is also within easy reach of London. Bignor Park is licensed to hold ceremonies and partnerships outside at the romantic Greek Loggia, bordered by glorious formal gardens. This is one of the very few venues in England with an outdoor ceremony license. The Greek Loggia is a roofed, stone porch under which you will exchange your vows. Your guests (space for up to 150) will be seated on the lawn. Alternatively, the Coach Store of the Stables provides a perfect setting if you’d prefer an indoor ceremony. For those wanting a church wedding, Bignor Park is surrounded by a wonderful choice of historic downland churches.

28

weddings

For your drinks reception, you have exclusive use of the spectacular gardens; chose either the formal gardens, the sweeping South Lawn, or around the iconic Temple and tranquil Zen pond. For winter weddings, the Stables provide a range of options for drinks receptions, kept cosy with the wood-fired stove. The recently restored twohundred-year-old Georgian Stables are perfect for wedding breakfasts and dancing. They can accommodate up to 90 guests for dining in the Coach Store and Stove Room. If more space is required, you can choose to put up a marquee in the cobbled courtyard with the option of a bespoke awning to attach to the open stable doors. This provides a seamless transition from the Coach Store into your marquee and maximises the space available to seat up to 150 guests. In addition, the other side of the Coach Store opens out onto the Quadrangle – a secluded walled garden perfect for drinks and evening relaxation. The Quadrangle is big enough to fit

a marquee either for dancing, or to seat up to 80 people. The Croquet Lawn can accommodate up to 250 guests in a marquee, with a dance floor, should you wish your whole reception to take place there. If you choose a marquee for the main part of your reception, you also have the use of the stables for later – ideal for dancing, or creating a relaxed area to chill out. Weddings at the beautiful, family-run venue are limited to twelve per year, and one per weekend (with access at least two days prior to allow for relaxed set-up). Couples are welcome to provide their own alcohol and none of the recommended caterers charge corkage. Wedding couples and guests are welcome to camp overnight in the gardens, or hire bell tents for a luxurious glamping experience. For more details and to arrange a viewing contact Louise Hartley at louise@bignorpark.co.uk or phone 07798 807043. www.bignorpark.co.uk

“We wanted wild-look meadow flowers so we chose a mix of daisies, craspedia, spray roses, veronica, wax flowers, scabious, lavender and more… plus a few ears of wheat to complete the look.”

“During the speeches our guests stood or sat on picnic blankets whilst drinking prosecco in the sun – it was beautiful and captured so brilliantly by our photographers.”

“Picnic baskets contained smoked salmon, ham hock, quails eggs, etc., plus kilner jars of potato salad, coleslaw and more. Pudding was jam jars of Eton mess and guests enjoyed pink lemonade.”

“I walked down the aisle to Ho Hey by the Lumineers, we signed the register to You Send Me by Sam Cooke and walked out as husband and wife to How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You by Marvin Gaye.”

Cosy Winter Weddings

W

inter time is fast becoming the season of choice for couples planning to say “I do”, and here at Long Furlong Barn we couldn’t be happier! We see rich colour schemes, crisp blue skies and even on occasion, a sprinkling of snow! We love how couples incorporate elegant hints of festive cheer; drinking mulled wine for a toast with a difference, hiding glittering frosted fruit within centrepieces and cheekily hanging sprigs of mistletoe. Plus, don’t forget the essential Christmas trees and twinkling fairy lights! What could be more romantic than a winter wedding?

On a glorious winter’s day in 2014, Nick and Victoria held their pre-Christmas wedding at Long Furlong Barn. We asked them, “why a winter wedding?” Nick said, “December is our favourite month and we loved

46

weddings

the idea of having a relaxed, warm atmosphere on the day, incorporating soft sparkles, candlelight and textures into the décor without it becoming too ‘Christmassy’.” And what advice would the couple give to others considering a winter wedding? Nick advised, “Don’t fret about the weather. As we expected, it was icy cold, so we provided blankets and the barn floor was nicely heated. We also offered our guests the option of warm mulled cider during the drinks reception.” Bob and Anne Marie also told us what was important for their December wedding: “We wanted a wintry rustic feel to the day with all the comforts of a well-heated venue. We chose Long Furlong Barn because it felt cosy and intimate; just

right for a winter wedding. Our theme was simplistic, rustic, and inspired by the countryside of Sussex with an all-important touch of sparkle.”

These couples captured the spirit of a winter wedding perfectly, and we can’t wait to see more this year. We are offering great discounts for winter 2015 and furthermore we are excited to announce that free venue dressing by Not Just for Hire will be included during December! THE PHENOMENON OF THE PINTEREST BRIDES

By Katherine Hudson www.houseofhud.com

Social media has changed the way we plan weddings It’s not surprising that the popularity of the visual bookmarking tool Pinterest is on the rise, given our boundless obsession with visual feasting. Since its inception in 2010, Pinterest has become an everincreasing hit with brides-to-be; who use the app for inspiration, the collation of ideas and as a way to mood-board themes. House of Hud have found it increasingly common for brides

to approach them with Pinterest mood-boards to communicate the look or feel they envision for their venue – be it a barn, a marquee, a forest, or their own home. It has been incredibly useful, as they can immediately set about designing the venue dressing; working closely with the brides, sometimes without even having met them! The benefit of working with one image in particular is there is far less room for the bride’s vision

Smriti Sinha And the orb specialists Smriti contacted the team regarding dressing two rooms at Shoreditch Studios. The second studio, used for dining, was to be light and modern and she’d taken inspiration from a Pinterest image of hanging glass orbs. Jeremy assembled a crackteam of orb hanging specialists, “It is rather a time consuming task to suspend hundreds of little orbs at different heights from a ceiling”. With limited time at the venue, Jeremy and his team

56

weddings

to be lost in creative translation, as there is an instant benchmark to ensure that the team are always on track. These are the stories of three women who approached House of Hud with one particular image, inspiration for their entire décor plan; and how they went about making it a reality for their Pinterest Brides…

were really up against the clock, “in the last 30 minutes before the guests were due to arrive we were still up ladders stringing the orbs”. However, all’s well that ends well and the job was finished in the nick of time. Bride, Smriti says: “I was lost for words when I walked into the venue. Jeremy and his team are magicians! The atmosphere they created was breath-taking; spectacular, whilst being intimate and warm”.

Hannah and Simon Revisited Pythagorus’ theorem Louise Perry, a highly renowned event planner, contacted House of Hud with a quandary. Her bride, Hannah, had become rather attached to one image she had found on Pinterest: she wanted the ceiling drapes to fall into wall drapes (as seen in the image); which would have been easy to do in a smallish square marquee, however not quite so

easy in the very large rectangular marquee she had set her heart on. “I quickly had to brush up on Pythagorus’ theorem!” says Jeremy Fifield, Manager at House of Hud. Although he had to make a couple of deviations along the way to keep the wedding budget from soaring, the end result was stunning and most importantly, Hannah loved it!

Zoe and Ian Chappell A twinkling aisle Thankfully, due to House of Hud’s wonderland warehouse of props, lanterns, vases and other glass receptacles, they didn’t have to go far to source the stock for this wedding. The couple wanted to recreate something light and wintery, yet warm. Zoe sent a Pinterest board indicating the general feel that she would like the team to recreate including one particular image of a candle-lit aisle. It wasn’t until the morning of the

set-up that Jeremy and his team encountered a problem. “When laying out all the chairs for the guests we found the aisle wasn’t as wide as we’d planned, so the main concern during this set-up was hoping we didn’t set the bride’s dress ablaze!” With Jeremy’s careful re-organisation, it was all fine in the end and they got fantastic feedback from the bride. “The venue looked so amazing, we can’t thank you enough, you did us proud.”

Tiffany the Vintage Caravan www.tiffanythevintagecaravan.co.uk

At Doily Days HQ we’re vintage lovers (is it obvious?). Don’t you think there’s something about vintage caravans that sums up everything that’s good about nostalgia? The simple life, the British seaside. Well, mother and daughter duo Nikki and Lisa never really had much interest in vintage caravans; that is until they saw a beautiful, but slightly dirty, caravan in an old man’s garden. He used it every year for holidays with his wife but since she passed away he was too sad to go it alone. Nikki and Lisa took the Sprite off his hands, gave her a full restoration and named her Tiffany. Now available for weddings and events, she offers a range of different services; hire Tiffany as a photo booth. She comes complete with props, accessories and professional studio lights. Or why not use the

58

weddings

caravan as an ice cream parlour for a laid-back wedding dessert? Staff will serve ice cream sundaes, cones, milkshakes and knickerbocker glories… sauces and sprinkles included of course. And they’re not the only sweet treats available! Tiffany can also be set-up as a mobile sweet shop, serving retro pick ‘n’ mix as well as fresh popcorn and candyfloss. If you’d like your own drinks to be served from Tiffany, the ladies can supply the glassware, and servers wearing 1950s dresses will ensure your guests are welcomed in vintage style. The company is located in Chichester (Doily Days’ amazing hometown!) and they cover the surrounding areas. Photos by www.bruceneville.co.uk

We know that the wedmin can be quite overwhelming when planning your big day. Will your guests really notice if the pink of your favours match the pink of your invitations? Probably not, so try not to sweat the small stuff… One thing that we’d advise not cutting out is thank you gifts for the bridal party. Not only will the act of giving give you a warm and fuzzy feeling, but it’s a chance to really thank those that have helped you not only on the day but in life in general! Maid of Honour & Bridesmaids Your bridesmaids are most likely going to be who you lean on the most throughout the big build up and on the day. Take the opportunity to thank them with a gift they can wear whilst walking down the isle. A dainty sterling silver necklace can accommodate all tastes, and will be treasured afterwards. Choose one that reflects your day – a seahorse for a beach wedding or a bumblebee for a spring outdoors affair. Parents Your parents have been there since day one and this is a special day for them too! Commemorate the occasion with something that proudly declares their status, and lasts way longer than a bunch of flowers… Handmade mugs are a special and practical gift that will bring a smile to their face with every cuppa. Combine them with a handstamped ‘I love you’ teaspoon and you’re onto a winner!

Best Man & Ushers Ushers prove a bit more difficult to buy for than your maids… Something practical will hit the spot. Handmade cufflinks given to them the morning of the wedding declaring their usher status can be worn throughout – making sure no responsibilities are avoided! The Young Ones Give children a role to play on the day – ring bearer, confetti thrower, page boy or flower girl. If they feel like they’re included, they are less likely to become bored and restless, and more likely to realise the importance of the day. Cute gifts declaring their status such as flower girl bags, or page boy cufflinks will make them beam with pride. And last but not least, the man that you’ll be spending the rest of your life with… If you’re spending your wedding night apart, we adore the idea of giving your hubby-to-be a card and gift to only be opened on the morning of the wedding. It’s hard not seeing each other for these few hours so a love note makes all the difference! How about filling a photo album with photos of your adventure together so far? Making sure that there’s some empty pages left to fill with the excitement of the rest of the day, of course…

How to Boost your Flower Powers by Hannah Best www.petalandfeast.co.uk

Pinspiration Pinterest is not only the place up-cycling ideas go to die, when it comes to weddings it’s also a really handy way of gathering your thoughts. We ask our couples to do a Pinterest board, and label each picture with what they like about it; is it the shape? The colour? A particular flower? Your florist should be able to give the look you want, and may be able to use a less purse-dissolving alternative. Go seasonal (or go home) Working with the seasons will make your money go further. Seasonal flower colours tend to go from springy pastels, through to summer brights and onto more earthy tones in autumn. You could bring in the season by snipping from family and friend’s gardens or even go foraging. If you’re really dedicated (or have a mum who is) you could grow your own. To jam jar, or not to jam jar? Sometimes it’s better to have a couple of big statement piece like a garland or urn rather than lots of smaller pieces. Jam jars on long trestles give a ‘just picked’ feel, and are suitable for barns and marquees, but look out of place somewhere more formal.

weddings

I’ve got secateurs and I’m not afraid to use them... Fancy getting all green-fingered and giving your wedding flowers a go? We are running various courses to help our DIYers. Email liz@petalandfeast.co.uk about our flower workshops. Petal and Feast’s style is ‘gathered’, natural and countrified. We love to use seasonal, locally grown flowers. If you are looking for diamonds in your gerberas or glitter on your carnations, sorry but we probably aren’t for you. hannah@petalandfeast.co.uk

The beauty sp t www.modernvintageweddinghairandmakeup.co.uk

One of the most important things on your wedding day is to look and feel fabulous. You want to look in the mirror and think ‘wow! I’d marry you!’. Perhaps the trickiest part is to keep looking fresh all day. Brides frequently ask me how they can maintain their makeup so I thought I’d share my favourite products, tried and tested over the years and some not so expensive. Everybody has unique skin types which react differently to make up, for those of you whose make-up just seems to slide off after a couple of hours, these are my go-to products: FOUNDATION: Estée Lauder Double Wear foundation £30.

This gives you an airbrush quality so it’s covering and will last until the early hours. Use a wide brush to apply for a lighter finish or add a couple of drops of moisturiser for sheerer coverage. CONCEALER: Collection 2000 Long Lasting Perfection £4.19. The beauty geeks are raving about this! Great coverage for under the eyes without creasing, stays put as a spot cover and under a fiver! MASCARA: Maybelline Great Lash Waterproof £4.99. This classic mascara is buildable. Always use waterproof mascara on your wedding day in case of tears.

By Claire Beever

EYESHADOW: Urban Decay Naked 3 pallete £38. A chocolate box of eyeshadows which stay put with the Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer at £8.00. EYELINER: George Precision Felt Tip Liner £2.75 ...yes Asda! I use this every day. It’s as good as the more expensive ones and it doesn’t budge. POWDER : Laura Mercier £29 Invisible Loose Setting Powder. One colour suits all. Gives a velvety smooth appearance and keeps shine at bay. Keep handy throughout day for touch-ups. If you decide to do your makeup yourself, make sure you have a couple of run throughs beforehand. If in any doubt, a professional artist makes all the difference, we are there to pamper, ease your nerves and make you feel a million dollars…every girl deserves that on her wedding day! Claire Beever has over 20 years experience as a hair and makeup artist and has worked in the fashion industry doing shoots all over the world for magazines such as Red, Elle, You and Your Wedding and Perfect Wedding. She specialises in vintage, natural, boho and classic styles and provides a bespoke service. She is based in Brighton and covers the south east.
