Harald-M. Lehnardt studied ‘Visual Communication’ in Germany and,as a two-time Fulbright Scholar, graduated from Parsons School of Design | The New School in New York with a Master of Arts in Media Studies. Inspired by Paul Rand, Neville Brody and David Carson, who changed the academic understanding of design and function and had a major impact on the tradition of type design and typography in particular, he began to combine his artistic vision with new tools and methods of communication. As a creative director and designer, he spent 14 years in New York City, where he fell in love with American Abstraction, which inspired American Abstract Expressionism, with all its abstract and colourful dynamism. Manhattan was followed by 12 years in Hawaii, the experience of which continued to lead him to his visualliterary expression (but now) with a historical context.
The Synergy between text and image is his passion His urge to discover and create new compositions by adding text, word fragments and single letters to images in a playful yet deliberate manner. The juxtaposition of image and text sparks a dialogue within us, inviting our interpretations and inspiring intellectual and emotional discovery. Through the fusion of carefully chosen words and evocative visuals, a story unfolds before our eyes.
His poignant text/image compositions offer a visual/poetic journey in a vintage-inspired style, drawing on Hawaiian history and surf culture and his love with nature photography. After 26 years in the United States, Harald-M. Lehnardt is now based in Northern Germany, where he continues his creative journey.

In 2005, I moved from New York City to Oahu to work as Design Director for Christian Riese Lassen, Hawaii’s leading maritime artist at the time, whose meticulous and imaginative paintings of tropical seascapes drenched in light and richly saturated colors in his super-realistic style sold very successfully in galleries in the US and Japan. Several years later, in 2010, our work for an extraordinary “CoffeTable Book” design project, an anthology of his work, deepened our collaboration, with many trips from Hawaii to Los Angeles, Newport, Laguna Beach and San Diego, where we transferred my typography developments onto large canvases that Christian painted prior. We were able to do this with the help of a large-format silkscreen machine, preparing for a large-scale presentation with his Japanese art dealers in his Kapalua Residenz on Maui, which was converted to an art gallery for the 3rd week of August 2010. In this collaboration with Christian, I got to know the pioneer of early 70s surf photography, Dan Merkel. He had been one of surfing’s legendary photographers for several decades, and actually that season (2009/2010), Dan Merkel’s iconic photo of Hawaiian patriarch and legendary waterman Eddie Aikau graced the cover of the 25th anniversary of “The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau” Big Wave Invitational Surfing Contest, the most prestigious surfing event in the world.
Dan Merkel was intrigued by my collaboration with Christian Lassen expressed his interest in collaborating with me and invited me to work with one of his iconic photographs of Hawaiian surf legend Eddie Aikau.

The opportunity to work with this iconic photograph left me exhilarated and humbled. Eddie Aikau’s legacy extended far beyond just his surfing prowess; he represented the spirit of resilience and fearlessness that embodied the Hawaiian culture. To do justice to this profound fusion of photography and storytelling, I immersed myself in Eddie Aikau’s life. I devoured every article, watched countless videos, and spoke to those who knew him personally. I wanted to grasp the essence of his courage and the sense of adventure that emanated from every wave he conquered. I was intrigued from the start by the dynamic of this iconic photograph taken in 1975 at Sunset Beach, directly behind the house I lived in on the Northshore of Oahu, at Sunset Beach. With this deep familiarity, I started to distill Eddie Aikau’s story into a narrative that unfolded within Dan’s photograph. To do this, I employed descriptive language, experimenting with word fragments and text that transported the reader into the ocean’s grasp, feeling the power and hearing the roar of the waves.
Even during my studies in Germany I developed a deep appreciation for the role of text as texture in my creative work. I discovered that typography could transcend its traditional function of conveying information and take on a visual and tactile quality adding depth and character to my projects. I delved into the intricate details of different typefaces carefully selecting those with distinct textures that resonated with the mood and message I wanted to convey. Over the years, my approach to work has evolved into a distinctive style that sets me apart as a creative. This interdisciplinary approach allows me to discover new possibilities and push the boundaries of design and art. Each project is an opportunity for me to explore and experiment; the possibilities are endless, and I cannot wait to see where this journey takes me.

The Big Wave Invitational in Memory of Eddie Aikau The Eddie Aikau Surf Competition is considered one of the most challenging and prestigious events in the surfing world. Named after Eddie Aikau, a Hawaiian surfer and lifeguard who is considered a true hero, this competition has been bringing a selection of the world’s best surfers to the ocean since 1978. Originally created to commemorate Eddie Aikau’s remarkable story and commitment to saving lives at sea, the competition has become much more than that over the years. The legend of Eddie Aikau developed into a fundamental part of Hawaiian culture. “The Eddie” is the most important event in surfing: the Super Bowl of surfing and has become a symbol of courage, skill and the true essence of surfing. The competition window is between December 1 and the last day of February annually, when winter storms in the North Pacific provide the energy for big waves on Oahu’s North Shore. Around forty surfers from all over the world are invited to take part in this friendly competition, which focuses on Hawaiian culture and aims to share their stories with the world. The competition has been held 10 times and only takes place when the waves at Waimea Bay on Oahu, Hawaii are at least 20 feet (about 7 meters) high. As these huge waves are extremely dangerous, the competition requires a high level of technical skill, fitness and mental toughness. Eddie Aikau’s brother, Clyde Aikau, won the second “Eddie” in 1986. Before Eddie’s death, at 31 in 1978, the two brothers had surfed together and competitively for a number of years. They are the only native Hawaiians to win the Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Championship. - The 2023 event included female surfers for the first time in the history of the contest, out of the 40 surfers set to compete, six were women.

Edward Ryon Makuahanai Aikau as a professional Hawaiian surfer, and the first lifeguard at the legendary Waimea Bay on the island of Oahu. He was a descendant of Kahuna Nui Hewahewa who was the highest priest of Hawaii in the 19th century. Hewahewa later became the caretaker of Waimea Bay, a place that Eddie would guard and cherish in his own way, as a lifeguard and surfer 100 years later. As the first lifeguard in Waimea Bay on the island of Oahu, he saved over 500 people and became famous for surfing the big Hawaiian surf. He won several awards, including the Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Championship in 1977. The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational (“The Eddie”) is named after him. Hours later, an aircraft spotted the boat’s flares, and the crew of the Hokulea were rescued by the US Coast Guard that same day.

He influenced many other Hawaiian shapers with his skills, and as Eddie’s friend and shaper, he also produced the white surfboard in the early 70s that Dan Merkel captured years later in his legendary 1975 photo at Sunset Beach, manifesting Eddie Aikau as an icon for eternity. 35 years later, the same photo graced the official poster of the world’s most famous surfing competition, “The Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau”. In the 1980s, Trombly moved from Hawaii to Germany for a season, where he worked as a shaper for Jürgen Hönscheid on Sylt. Dan Merkel is one of the most legendary surf photographers of our time. A pioneer of surf photography, he has been one of the best in the genre for several decades. He entered the world of surf photography more than 45 years ago, at a time when pro surfers like Rabbit Bartholomew, Shaun Thomson, Mark Richards, Gerry Lopez and Buttons Kaluhiokalani were taking the sport to a new level of competition and international attention. During the 2009/2010 season, Dan Merkel’s iconic photo of Hawaiian patriarch and legendary waterman Eddie Aikau graced the cover of the 25th anniversary of the “Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau” Big Wave Invitational Surfing Contest and captured a piece of Hawaiian history. Through a collaboration with Mauibased artist Christian Riese Lassen, Harald-M. Lehnardt met Dan Merkel in Los Angeles in the spring of 2010 and was immediately captivated by his iconic surf photographs. He began to incorporate the iconic image of Eddie Aikau into his compositions and the original five compositions soon expanded to a series of ten, each painting capturing a

Art + Interior Art and architecture have always been closely intertwined. In contemporary architecture, this connection becomes particularly clear as it increasingly focuses on designing spaces not only functionally, but also to design them in an aesthetically pleasing and meaningful way. The integration of art in space is becoming an integral part of the architectural process. Integrating art into architecture creates spaces that are not only functional, but also have an emotionally appealing effect, creating an atmosphere that touches and inspires people. It can convey a sense of vibrancy and creativity and help people feel comfortable and inspired in the spaces, making them places of communication and cultural exchange.

I wrote my Master’s Thesis at Parsons School of Design / The New School in New York on “The Interaction of ‘Text + Image’ in the Communicative Pattern of Art Photography.” I wrote about Barbara Kruger, Gilbert and George, Duane Michals ... and I took a detailed and closer analytical look at my own art, trying to figure out why I was doing what I was doing. This was in the mid-90s. Later in my professional life as a designer and creative director in New York and Honolulu, I developed national and international advertising campaigns, continuing my ‘text-image’ compositions in my artistic work, but always experimenting and developing new concepts whenever I had the opportunity. I continued with my vision and focused on following my inner calling. As an artist and designer, I strongly believe that
