The period since our IPO on the New York Stock Exchange and the birth of Dole plc in July 2021 has been an exciting and dynamic time. Bringing together two giants of the fresh produce sector was always going to entail fundamental change. As always, together, we have risen to the challenge.
Three years on, this resource pack has been developed to provide an overview of the new Dole plc- to make sure that amidst the pace of progress, we collectively take a moment to reflect on and understand this business that we are building. Covering structure, operations- both local and global, our strengths and our responsibilities, it is intended as a simple, accessible guide to what makes us what we are today.
Inevitably this overview represents only a snapshot of our company at a single moment in time. Our business will continue to evolve in the months and years ahead and each and every one of you will be important contributors to that change. But for now I hope this pack serves, not only as a means to understanding and navigating our organisation, but also as a useful resource in helping each of you in sharing our story with other stakeholders across the supply chain. In fresh produce, control and influence of the supply chain is highly valued by trade customers, but also consumers who appreciate when produce comes ‘straight from the farm.’ Vertical Integration (exerting control back across the supply chain) has implications in terms of a business’ capacity to ensure best agronomic, logistical and sustainable practices from farm to fork. In Dole, by virtue of our extensive own production, our enduring long-term relationships with many of the world’s most accomplished growers and our extensive on-the-ground operations across key markets, we have the capacity to offer the most direct route to market for our fresh produce- closing the gap between the grower and the consumer and delivering on our promise of ‘quality, quality, quality’.

The DOLE® brand is, of course, synonymous with bananas and pineapples the world over. A market leader in Organic bananas and pineapples in North America, across Dole plc the overall volumes sales of the two lines accounts for nearly half of our overall volume sales. The remaining 50% of our volume turnover is derived from non-banana and pineapple products, which we classify as ’Diversified Produce.’ This includes a broad array of produce categories including Top Fruit, Berries, Cherries, Stone Fruit, Soft Fruit, Grapes, Exotics and a wide portfolio of salad and vegetable lines. Our products are sourced from our own production and that of trusted third party growers, both local and global.

Dole Diversified America’s operations can be broadly divided into production and marketplace/commercial activities. A wide range of ‘diversified’ produce (essentially non - banana and pineapple lines) are grown across Chile, Argentina, Peru and Mexico for export to key markets. Across North America, marketplace businesses concentrate on supplying local wholesale, foodservice and retail customers with a combination of Dole grown and third party fresh produce lines.

The term EMEA stands for Europe, Middle East and Africa. Dole EMEA is divided into three sub-regions: Dole Iberia, Dole Ireland/UK and Dole Northern Europe. Marketplace businesses concentrate on supplying local wholesale, foodservice and retail customers with a combination of Dole grown and third party fresh produce lines from both global and local growers.

Dole Fresh Fruit’s portfolio of premium fresh fruit products encompasses cavendish bananas, various other banana varieties (babies, red, manzano, burros, plantains) fresh pineapple, mangoes and dragon fruit and an expanding array of speciality and seasonal fruits, including organic bananas and pineapples.
These products are grown primarily in Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Colombia, Honduras, Peru and Mexico and sold to retailers and wholesalers globally, extending its reach to the US, Canada, Mexico and Europe.
Dole’s flagship product, bananas, holds a prominent position in the market, with over 172 million boxes sold annually. Renowned for their consistent quality and nutrition, DOLE® Bananas lead as the number one selling brand in North America.
Dole’s roots began in the volcanic soil of Hawaii, where the pineapple, recognized as “the fruit of kings,” was first planted in 1901. DFF markets both super-sweet GOLDEN SELECTION pineapple and the TROPICAL GOLD® and ROYAL HAWAIIAN labels.
The company’s commitment to sustainable agriculture is evident in DFF’s cultivation practices, including being the first major banana company in North America to offer organic bananas. Dole’s organic banana stickers allows
consumers to virtually visit the farms, enhancing transparency and connecting customers with the source of their organic produce.
In all of its farming operations DFF continues to explore earth-friendly cultivation techniques, water and soil conservation, reduced packaging and R&D into new banana varieties. Dole’s core competency lies in its refrigerated supply chain, a closed-loop system that preserves and protects quality from farm to customer. Dole Fresh Fruit boasts the largest dedicated
refrigerated containerized fleet globally, 11 owned vessels, ensuring efficient transportation and delivery of the highest-quality and freshest products.
In North America Dole Fresh Fruit provides terminal services in five ports, transportation, distribution and ripening to its 238 customers. The company’s subsidiary, Dole Ocean Cargo Express (DOCE), extends its shipping services to third parties, transporting various cargos internationally.

A vital cog in the domestic supply chain, we provide financial agronomic, technical, commercial, logistical, packaging and marketing support to local growers, some of whom we have partnered for generations. Operating a ‘local produce first policy’, we prioritise supply of Irish grown fruits and vegetables wherever it is practical to do so with local produce accounting for approximately half of our overall sales, our Grá brand, applied only to the very best Irish produce serves to add value on the retail shelf.

Though the DOLE® brand is the #1 recognized fresh produce brand globally, here in Ireland it is a new entrant to the marketplace. Though over 40% of Irish consumers recognise the DOLE® brand when they see it, it does not yet enjoy the levels of recognition here, that it does elsewhere in Europe, for example. This is something we are determined to address. A key first step is to get DOLE® produce on to the retail shelves of Ireland. In this regard our DOLE® BE Exotic! and DOLE® GO Organic! ranges will lead the way. The brand will also be aggressively supported in the Irish market- with innovative in-store, above the line and digital campaigns accompanying new product launches. Through a combination of these measures, we are committed to moving the DOLE® brand to ‘front of mind’ with Irish consumers- its rightful place here in its home market. Renewable energy
The impact of the use of fossil fuels on Climate Change is well documented. In 2018 as part of our group Vision 20/20 project, Dole Ireland began a concerted campaign to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and, by extension our Scope 1 and 2 emissions across our operations. Our first step was in introducing renewable alternatives was to switch to ‘green’ electricity sources; first through the national grid and later, through the installation of solar panels across many of our facilities. The combined impact of these measures was a XX% reduction in our Scope 1 & 2 emissions. In 2024 we will begin profiling our Scope 3 emissions- those associated with 3rd parties serving us across the supply chain using the ‘Carbon Cloud’.
Water Conservation
Consumption of water by Dole Ireland operations is understandably greatest on our production sites where multiple measures have been put in place to conserve and recycle water use. All of us can play our part in reducing water use in all of our facilities by being mindful not to waste water for any purpose.
Waste & Packaging
In Dole we are committed to minimizing food waste at all times. Similarly, we are determined to remove, reduce or replace as much plastic packaging from our products as possible.
Biodiversity
Preserving natural habitats is essential if we are to protect the environment. In Dole Ireland, we’re working with partners to profile and ringfence existing ecosystems related to horticultural production, employing satellite technology to monitor and manage biodiversity.

Dole Ireland is proud to be an Origin Green Gold member. Globally renowned, Origin Green is the worlds’ only national food and drink sustainability programme, encouraging lrish businesses to set and achieve measurable sustainability targets that respect and protect the environment and enrich local communities. Providing programmes for farmers, producers, manufacturers and retailers, the Origin Green programme is independently monitored and verified. Verified Origin Green members account for 90% of our food and drink exports and over 70% of our domestic retail market.
Accreditation at farm-level is provided to ISO: 17065 and Carbon Trust (PAS 2050), while food and drink manufacturers are independently verified by international auditors, Mabbett. Our ongoing commitment to the Origin Green accreditation is a testament to Dole’s ongoing commitment to transparency across its operations and the pursuit of best sustainable practices- a commitment evident in the wide variety of initiatives in place across Dole Ireland focused on, amongst other things, energy management, water conservation, biodiversity, community engagement and diversity and inclusion.

EXPERTISE LOCAL PRODUCE
We cherish what we have close to us, and we invest in working with local producers to maintain the quality of Swedish products and producers nationwide. Because we have short chains and work closely with the growers, we can offer a complete range of products with the right quality and price, always according to season. Our producers are often at the forefront with new sustainable solutions at their facilities. Some examples are energy efficiency, management of residual products that go to animal feed and green manure, and efficient reuse of water through our own treatment plants. Many growers also have their fields directly adjacent to the factory, which helps to reduce emissions.
LOCAL PRODUCTION
STEGLINGE FARM
Steglinge Farm in Höganäs, south-west Sweden, is home to one of Northern Europe’s most modern facilities for potatoes and root vegetables. Steglinge can wash, pack, pre-cook, shred, chop and turn carrots, beets, parsnips and a lot of other lovely produce.
Dole Nordic and the Gibrand family, which operates the Steglinge agricultural business, jointly own the production facility.
VIDINGE GRÖNT
Vidinge Grönt is located in Norrvidinge, just north of Lund in south-west Sweden. In the fields, baby leaves such as rocket and baby spinach, romaine lettuce and Swiss chard are grown. These are then processed into meal salads and other ready-to-eat products sold around Scandinavia.
The production facility is jointly owned by Dole Nordic, the Nordmark family (which also operates the family farm) and KFF, Kramer Food Family.
OUR LOCAL HERITAGE
A Nordic success story
Over the years, our Nordic operations and our family of companies have grown and evolved from local businesses to a local and global business.
Since 2009, we have had a unique partnership with Coop Sweden, where we are a full-service supplier to all of Coop’s stores and work closely with their fruit and vegetable business unit on a day-to-day basis.
Nowaste Logistics, which is part of Dole Nordic, strives to constantly develop successful solutions that drive the industry forward through innovative technology, automation and systems. As a result, we have a logistics solution that works extremely well.
Through the jointly owned production facilities Steglinge Farm and Vidinge Grönt, we have our own capacity tor refine fresh produce, which further enhances our customer offering across all of our business areas.
Our passion for fresh produce has always been our focus, and this has remained unchanged over the years. We are constantly looking ahead to new goals and aiming to create new opportunities for our company.
Operations in Denmark start when Hans Lembcke founds the company H. Lembcke for import and export of fresh produce.
1923
Everfresh is founded in Gothenburg as a Swedish wholesale company.
Half of the shareholding in Lembckes is sold to the Irish company Fyffes. Purchasing offices in France, Spain and Italy open.

INVESTING IN OUR PEOPLE DALE FOUNDATION
Our community development efforts are focused on three key areas: health, education and entrepreneurship, all supported by our people.
In the US, employees from our farms and facilities can nominate community initiatives for us to support. For example, in Salinas, California, teams take part in annual ‘Relay for Life’ events for the American Cancer Society, while in Ohio our people take part in the annual ALS fundraising walk. Perhaps the most powerful example of our community development work is the DALE Foundation, set up 20 years ago in collaboration with a group of independent growers in Ecuador. Its purpose is to improve the lives of both employees but also local communities. Since its conception, it has expanded out to include Peru. Activities include adapting mobile medical units to reach employees in the most remote of locations, allowing the foundation to also offer emergency medical interventions in events such as floods.
The Foundation has set up two schools and supports many others, and trains local people in entrepreneurship, helping improve family incomes and quality of life. The foundation has helped more than 80,000 people across 100 communities to date. Across the world we support multiple other initiatives centred around educating, inspiring and empowering people to lead healthier lives. Take our support of Ireland’s Incredible Edibles programme, which teaches almost 50,000 school children each year to grow fresh produce. Being a responsible business is in our DNA. Our presence in rural agricultural areas across the world has the potential to make a real difference not only in our people’s lives, but in their communities more broadly.

Dale Foundation is the executing arm of our social responsibility strategy in Ecuador. It has been operating since 2001 with the firm purpose of transforming the lives of agricultural employees, their families, and communities in the banana sector. All programs run by the Dale Foundation are possible and sustainable thanks to our donations and those of our independent growers. In this way, we reinforce our commitment to contribute to livelihoods wherever we operate.

Dole’s Consumer pan-European research project began life as “Kostministeriet”, meaning “the Ministry of Food” in Sweden. Dedicated to providing deeper insights into what motivates and inhibits consumers from eating more fresh fruits and vegetables, in 2022 its scope was broadened to cover 10 different European countries. Using a variety of complementary research methods Dole Consumer Compass, so named given its objective to “point us in the right direction”, seeks to deliver a deeper understanding of consumers than traditional research provides. It is used to support generic promotion of produce, for New Product Development and for category management purposes with retail partners.
10,000 people were interviewed across 10 European countries; Austria, Germany, Belgium, France, Czech Republic, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Poland, and the Netherlands. By garnering a deeper understanding of consumer perceptions of fresh fruits and vegetables our hope is to inform our approach to meeting the expectations of consumers and customers across the continent, driving consumption and promoting better health and well-being.

Sustainable Banana Labels
Innovative, sustainable, intelligent – that’s the new label on DOLE® bananas in Northern Europe. Dole Europe GmbH has opted for “home compostable” stickers compliant with the Sinclair EcoLabel HOME™ . The self-adhesive labels are explicitly certified for fresh products, i.e. fruit and vegetables. The new fruit stickers are made of partially bio-based and plastic-free materials that make them ideal for home composting. This means they can be disposed of in garden compost, where they biodegrade and are ready for re-use within about 365 days. (The compost storage method, the temperature on site, and other factors can all affect the rate at which the label decomposes and degrades into usable compost.) This is a major benefit for Dole customers, who can simply put DOLE® banana peels and stickers on their home compost heaps and know they are helping the environment. Since recently the Dole Blog has also been describing how easy it is to make everyday life more sustainable. Users will find helpful tips on sustainable gardening methods, avoiding food waste and social engagement. With this range the aim is to make everyone’s everyday struggle of finding the time to make really good food in a fast and easy way a little bit more convenient. That’s why these meal kits also go with almost everything and everyone. Vegetarian? Just add halloumi. Barbecue? Just add steaks. Spontaneous afterparty? Just add dip.
In the end, we wanted to lower the threshold to make a delicious dinner and allow the consumer to focus on what’s important. The United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a comprehensive framework addressing global challenges such as poverty, hunger, climate change, and inequality.
The 17 Goals were adopted by all UN Member States in 2015, as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which sets out a 15-year plan to achieve the Goals, provides a global blueprint for dignity, peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and in the future.
Our new, reset sustainability goals were developed by representatives across all areas of our business to ensure they reflect our collective ambitions and commitment towards making a positive impact. These goals are aligned and contribute to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) prioritising 10 of the 17 goals.

Establishing clear targets and priorities is a recognised prerequisite for the effective measurement and management of impact in sustainability terms.
In December 2022, Dole plc committed to a new suite of group-wide goals dedicated to bringing focus and transparency to our sustainability strategy and aligned to our three pillars and the UN Sustainability Goals. These goals, which were developed by representatives across all areas of the company, reflect our combined ambitions and commitment towards making a positive impact. Aligned with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) they specifically contribute to 10 of the 17 SDGs.
By the end of 2023 each Dole EMEA operating division plans to develop and launch an individual Sustainability Plan which will deliver on the corporate goals. True to our motto ‘Local at heart, global by nature’, each plan will contain additional goals and initiatives tailored to the realities of the markets in which they operate.

In 2022 Dole plc developed its first Materiality Matrix. Based on input from our employees and a suite of external stakeholders, we identified the most relevant sustainability issues to Dole plc and those where we can apply the greatest influence. These results formed the basis upon which our evolving sustainability framework was constructed, categorising findings under our For People, For Food and For Nature pillars. We believe a detailed materiality analysis is an important tool for identifying the most significant sustainability issues with respect to both our business and our stakeholders’ priorities and expect to complete a Double Materiality Matrix in 2024.
