Gift Guide Your Guide To Shopping Local This Season domicilemag.com
Director’s Letter Dear Readers,
Winter is almost here! We’ve put away Halloween decorations, tried our best not to eat too much candy, found our winter coats and hats, and now we’re preparing for the feasts, parties and family gettogethers that the winter season will bring. At the top of my DomiCile checklist, amid all of the the holiday season to-do’s, is the release of our first winter gift guide! Now is the perfect time to stop and appreciate the small businesses, artists, and makers who enrich our community. I want to thank all of you who sent in your creations to share with the rest of the region! The goals in creating this gift guide are first—get more people thinking about local gifts this holiday season, and second—highlight many of our region’s gift offerings perfect for anyone’s wish list.

The second checklist item is something I’ve been thinking about since this summer. I’m excited to finally announce that DomiCile, MAKE TRIBE and The Gathering Project are teaming up for a Small Business Sunday partnership event—Gift & Gather! On November 30th from 11am-4pm, this highly curated winter event will feature a market where makers from around the region will showcase home and design products, artisanal foods, handmade goods and local fashion. In addition to shopping local, starting at 5pm, guests can enjoy a locally sourced family-style supper, where they’ll meet makers and local smallbusiness owners alike. The event will be held at The Loft at 600 F. Tickets go on sale November 11th. You can find many of the vendors who’ll be at Gift and Gather on the very pages of this gift guide. I hope that you can all come celebrate, feast, and shop with us on November 30th. Most of all, I hope you have a wonderful winter season filled with cheer! Your neighbor, Tiffanni Reidy, Founder & Creative Director

Copper Crochet Winter Luminaries
From Jessica D’Argenio Waller of MAKE TRIBE Photos by Lindsay Hite
Copper spray paint brings out the delicate details of repurposed vintage doilies in this modern take on a winter luminary. Hang around your home for some instant holiday cheer. Materials: Cellophane, Scissors, Double-sided tape, Pint jar, Quart jar, 1/2 gallon mason jar, 12” round doily, 15” round doily, 18” round doily, Fabric stiffener, Bowl, 3 rubber bands, Copper spray paint, Duck tape, 26 gauge floral wire, 3 electric tea lights
Directions: 1. Place the pint-size mason jar on a stable surface. Cut a 5”x15” piece of cellophane and wrap around jar. (For 1/2 gallon jar use 18” doily and 15”x17” piece of cellophane. For quart jar use 15” doily and a 10”x17” piece of cellophane.)
2. Use double-sided tape to secure ends of cellophane around jar diameter. Flip jar upside-down and wrap cellophane over base of jar. 3. Place 12” round doily in bowl and coat with fabric stiffener. Use hands to work stiffener into fabric until completely saturated. 4
4. Drape doily over and around jar. Center of doily should be at center of jar base. Gather excess fabric around rim of jar, and place rubber band at neck to secure. Let fabric dry overnight.
5. In a ventilated area, spray copper spray paint over doily to cover. Let dry 1 hour. 6. Snip rubber band and carefully pull out jar from doily lantern, keeping shape intact. Remove cellophane layer. 7. Use scissors to snip off doily excess around rim for an even lantern opening. Apply second layer of spray paint to coat inside.
8. Cut 3 1/2 strands of floral wire. Use Duck tape to secure 3 ends of wire to a flat surface, then braid wires together. 9. Insert end of wire braid through one side of lantern, 1/2 from top. Twist wire ends to secure. Arch wire braid over lantern opening and secure ends on opposite side to form handle. 10. Place electric tea light at bottom of lantern and hang. 5
