From the President Dear Dominican Family & Friends, This past April we began a comprehensive review and revision of our integrated communications and marketing plan. We have such a great story to tell and a renewed plan will be highly beneficial in our efforts to reach a wider audience and promote Dominican more effectively in the greater Milwaukee area. There are three developments that make this the perfect time for this important work: •

Our enrollment numbers are up! The Dominican story is rich in faith, traditions, and excellence; more and more families across the region are responding to Dominican and the time-tested, proven education approach we offer our students. This increased demand shines a light on our need to ensure communications are aligned with both our progress and the changing marketplace. Our marketing efforts will always prioritize our Catholic feeder schools, but gone are the days when Catholic grade school graduates automatically matriculate into Catholic high schools, and when all Catholic K-8 schools had 50+ students at each grade level. Our communications now must also support our continued expansion of marketing and admissions efforts to include a broader scope of prospective students to meet the enrollment challenges every Catholic high school is facing.

campus ministry and service experiences. These are the stories that keep us grounded in our mission and focused on ensuring the Dominican experience is possible for generations to come. But how do we package it all? How do we ensure our prospective students and families receive the right messages at the right time? How can we effectively market the “it” factor of Dominican, this amazing place that so many call home? It all begins with insights. Our current parents, faculty, and staff recently participated in surveys and focus groups; their feedback on Dominican’s strengths and opportunities has been invaluable to us. We will be reaching out to alumni and past parents in the months ahead. We are excited to achieve our ultimate goal of creating a communications road map that will help us most effectively share the Dominican story and reach a larger audience. When you get the call or email asking for your feedback, I hope you will share your Dominican story with us. In the meantime, please enjoy the stories of Dominican excellence and student success which are featured in this magazine. Thank you for your love and support of the Dominican mission. Wishing you and your family God’s greatest blessings,

The media landscape is more crowded than ever before, making effective strategy, messaging, and communications programs especially critical to maintaining visibility.

Dominican is the story of graduates who have found extraordinary success in their post-secondary education and respective careers and are now leading wonderful, meaningful lives. It’s the story of personal faith and lifelong friendships being strengthened and inspired through retreats,

Breakthrough on the Hardwood Overcoming adversity, the Dominican girls basketball team advanced to state for the first time in 11 years

The Dominican girls basketball season was like a roller coaster, full of twists and turns. It was one fun ride to be on. Coming off a regional championship last year, the Knights had the look of a team ready to make a deep run. Leading scorer Keona McGee was back for her sophomore year, giving Dominican a big boost on the offensive end. A strong junior class, led by Alicia Burgos, Victoria Okoro, and twins Makari and Makaiyah Cornelius anchored one of the toughest defenses in the state.

This experienced and talented roster had one simple goal: get to Green Bay. That’s where the WIAA state tournament was being held. The Knights last qualified for state in 2011. “I had really high hopes this season,” Alicia Burgos said. “We did pretty good last year, and I was hoping we could build off that. We all work really well together. We all have a good bond outside of basketball, which I think brings so much more into the game because we all want to look out for each other. We all want to see each other succeed.” However, the season did not come without some adversity early on. The Knights started slow, losing their first two games, and were just 5-4 overall by winter break. The injury bug also hit Dominican, forcing players out of the lineup. Frustration started to set in for the players and coaching staff. “All of a sudden we were down to three players in practice and it was very stressful,” head coach Kevin Schramka said. “If you were at practice and saw our games, we couldn’t do certain things with this team that we thought we could do. During Christmas break, this was the time we could re-energize and think about the season. What could we do to do better.”

The turning point of the season came in a team meeting led by assistant coach Deysha Smith-Jenkins ’12, a key member of the 2011 state team. “She was like, how bad do you guys want this? If you do want it bad, you need to start putting in the work,” Burgos said. “We took the new year and we ran with it. We did whatever we could. We put everything else behind us and never looked back.”

With a change of mentality and a healthy roster, the Knights finally hit their stride in February. Dominican won four of its last five games and earned a No. 3 seed in the Division 3 playoffs.

“My happiness was, one, for the team, but also for the school and the community,” Schramka said. “Just put Dominican on the front burner for a while. The spirit of the school got uplifted and that made me happy.”

Taking the court at the Resch Center in Green Bay in front of a loud Dominican crowd, the Knights faced a tough challenge against top-seed Waupun. Despite a valiant effort, our girls basketball season came to end, losing to the eventual WIAA state champs 47-29.

The Knights started the postseason with wins over Brown Deer and University School to claim the regional title for the second straight year. In the sectional semifinal, Dominican’s strong defense held Kettle Moraine Lutheran to five points in the first half en route to a 38-33 win to move one game away from state. “I always tell the girls before we get to these big games, this isn’t just about this year,” Schramka said. “It’s been all those times where your dad might have shot baskets with you in the driveway or at a park. It’s all those other games that you played in grade school. They all come to a point like this. And you don’t get many opportunities for it so let’s give them everything we’ve got.” Facing Martin Luther in the sectional final, the Knights controlled the game from the tip, winning 48-36. A few months prior, Dominican was in a slump and barely had enough healthy players to practice. Now they were cutting down the nets. The Knights were going to state.

The Knights ended the year with 18 wins, the most since 2018. McGee led Dominican in scoring with 16.0 points per game, earning First Team All-Conference and All-State Honorable Mention. Burgos and Okoro were named All-Conference Honorable Mentions. As a team, Dominican received the sportsmanship award from the WIAA. The Dominican girls basketball team has set the bar high for future seasons. That’s exactly the way they want it, hungry for another ride back to state and a chance to bring home a gold trophy.

“Last season was probably my favorite season ever for any sport I’ve ever played at Dominican,” Burgos said. “We all are really trying over the summer to improve and get better so that when we do face those challenges it won’t set us back. We will be able to push through it and get through it as a team.” Dominican Magazine 17

After having a virtual event in 2021, the North Shore Catholic Schools Mass at Dominican High School was back in-person this school year….with a twist. On February 1st, Dominican welcomed students, faculty, and staff from the neighboring Catholic K-8 grade schools: St. Robert, St. Monica, St. Eugene, and Holy Family to celebrate Catholic Schools Week. With more than 1,200 guests inside the school, social distancing became a top priority. To keep everyone safe, Dominican held two separate masses, in the gymnasium and auditorium, that ran simultaneously.

21st CENTURY STEM D

ominican has a long tradition of excellence in preparing students for college and careers in science, technology, engineering, and math. Spanning decades, alumni can easily recall lessons and experiences from legendary STEM teachers, such as Darwin Kaestner, Bill Crowley, and Patricia Ash. These talented teachers challenged and pushed our students to think about our world and expand their potential. Dominican’s current faculty leaders in math, science, and technology continue the tradition of academic excellence by exploring new ways for our students to experience college-level curriculum, engage with university students and professors, and offer opportunities to explore their future careers.

frontier. Our outstanding teachers have continued this tradition of a strong science and math education by pushing our students to excel. “We want students to learn the necessary concepts and skills in their field of interest while they are at Dominican so when they start college they already have that base knowledge,” Dominican math teacher Megan Renner said.

MEETING STUDENTS’ NEEDS Dominican’s commitment to excellence in STEM spans back to the founder of the Sinsinawa Dominicans, Father Samuel Mazzuchelli. He and the Sinsinawa Dominicans embraced science, engineering, and technology as far back as the 1830-40s. Father Samuel designed and built churches in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois, and required strong science education in the schools founded by the Sinsinawa Dominicans. He even brought scientific equipment, including a modern telescope from Europe, when he settled in the American 24

Megan Renner dissecting a word problem during her AP Calculus BC class.

Renner has taught at Dominican for 14 years and is the math department chair. Over the years she has seen a growing interest in AP (Advanced Placement) math courses.

“We want students to be successful and also challenged, that’s the sweet spot,” Renner said. “You can help them understand what classes they need to take in college for their career before they graduate.”

“Initially it was as little as one to four students in a class, now we are getting full class sizes,” Renner said. “Students are more interested in STEM-related careers, including medicine, engineering, nursing, and business. They know they need a strong background in math.”

According to Renner, knowing students on a personal level is what makes Dominican’s STEM curriculum unique.

AP Biology student Morgan Theiler ’22 analyzes her data during a Gel Electrophoresis lab.

Over the past five years, Dominican’s STEM faculty has committed to expanding the advanced curriculum and learning experiences of our students. College-level courses in science, technology, and math all include Advanced Placement or concurrent enrollment classes. The past two years recorded all-time high student enrollments in AP Chemistry, Biology, Statistics, Calculus AB and Calculus BC courses. In 2017, Dominican students took 27 Advanced Placement exams in STEM areas. In 2022, Dominican more than doubled that total with over 65 AP STEM exams. Those exams resulted in a record number of high scores, earning Dominican students college credits. Among the Class of 2022, 79% of students graduated with college credits through Advanced Placement or concurrent enrollment courses.

“By the time they are taking AP courses, we’ve already had them in a class,” Renner said. “Students know us, and I think that is a big deal. They are comfortable asking questions and asking for help. If I know I have a lot of kids going into a certain field, I can relate lectures and assignments a little bit more toward that career. If I see a student struggling, I can take that student aside because I know what their goal is.”

Our commitment to university-level experiences goes beyond just curriculum and AP exams; Dominican teachers have pursued partnerships with area colleges. Marquette University’s Physician Assistant program sends professors and graduate students to Dominican’s Anatomy and Physiology course to conduct collegelevel lab experiences with our students. It’s nice to get to high school and be able to challenge yourself and be prepared for the college workload,” Firsan shared. “Dominican does a good job of providing opportunities at each level and encourages everyone to follow their interests.”

Paul Firsan ’22 looks at cells through a microscope. Paul plans to study Electrical Engineering at UW-Madison this fall.

“Being able to take what you have learned and apply it is important,” Paul Firsan ’22 said. “It’s one thing to sit in a classroom, it’s another to put it to use in the real world.” Ever since Firsan was in middle school, he knew he wanted to be an engineer. He would design Lego sets without the instructions because “the real fun is letting your imagination take over.” “I always liked the idea that engineers were able to create things that came to their minds and I want to do that,” shared Firsan, who will study Electrical Engineering this fall at the University of WisconsinMadison, one of the top engineering institutions in the country. For Firsan, the field he is entering requires the ability to apply the principles of science and mathematics to solve problems. As a sophomore, Firsan joined Dominican’s stage crew, getting hands-on experience in technical theater. “I really enjoyed stage crew,” Firsan said. “In class, you do word problems and experiments that show you acceleration, position, velocity and how all of it works together. In stage crew, you figure out how to design something in real time. You need to come up with a unique solution to get something to work. There is a lot of variety in it, just like there is a lot of variety in engineering.” 26

In 2019, Dominican sought out students interested in getting involved in science competitions to launch a new robotics club. The team, known as the TermiKnightors, provided students interested in STEM an opportunity to build a robot and compete against other schools. This past spring, the TermiKnightors won two awards at the regional level and advanced to the FIRST Robotics World Championships in Houston. As part of the Knight Vision 2.0 Capital Campaign, a brand-new Robotics Center will be built.

“Dominican’s unique small-school community sets the learning experience apart from other high schools. Our teachers have students in class multiple times over their fours years which provides an awesome opportunity for teachers to mentor students,” Principal Edward Foy said. “Those close relationships allow our teachers to push students to excel, talk about differences between college majors and careers, and be a sounding board for students’ ideas and problems. At Dominican, this type of mentorship isn’t the exception, it’s the norm.”

Dominican is committed to expanding partnerships with top Catholic universities to expand the reach of STEM education. Three years ago, teachers from the Science and Religious Studies departments attended a summer internship program at the University of Notre Dame to

“Our teachers are constantly pushing the limits of what a STEM experience can be in high school. From partnering with the top college programs to forming mentorship relationships with students, our faculty understands what it takes to develop ethical, curious, and skilled STEM leaders,” Foy said. “Our students are prepared to step onto a college campus and excel. They have the foundation to become leaders as physicians, architects, engineers or whatever else they dream of.” The pursuit of college-level STEM courses, partnered with real world experiences and hands-on extracurriculars provides Dominican students with the 21st century skills they need to be tomorrow’s leaders. The talent and dedication of our STEM faculty is paying dividends and the best evidence is the amazing work that our young alumni are doing on college campuses. The combination of a talented and dedicated team of STEM teachers and a commitment to evolving courses and curriculum to meet the modern needs of STEM majors and careers has resulted in a dynamic learning experience for our students.
