What is Tufa? Tufa has an almost fibrous texture. In its raw state this soft, highly porous, rock provides an ideal substrate and naturalistic landscaping for growing those alpine plants which prefer alkaline conditions. Cushion plants in particular grow very well in tufa - the medium induces them to grow slowly and thus they retain their compact habit. The alpine house displays many exceptional examples, including species of Dionysia, Primula, Draba and Saxifraga.
