CANNES FILM CANNES FILM FESTIVAL FESTIVAL
THANK YOU MESS TEAM
EDITOR’S LETTER Candy Mess – what can be created when you mix the candy with messy? Something creative. Something magical. Something unpredictable. Something aesthetically different. Something original. But who said Candy equals with super bold, colourful theme? This time, we’ve tried to break the rules and we shot our cover with Candy Girl, showing her new self and promoting her new album inspired by David Lynch. On the set, she played 4 demonic, strong characters and the results can be seen on the pictures! We proved that even Candy Girl can look disturbing, mysterious and fearless. We tried to follow original Lynch’s style, but at the same time make it Candy and Messy! June issue is not typical Summer issue – our cover is definitely much more mysterious than everyone would expect. New logo and design bring the extra darkness to this layout. 17 diverse editorials from all around the world enabled us to show Candy Mess in new way. From creative like ‘PaperCut’ by Assaf Matarusso or ‘Cubus’ by Anna Michalek, to more sweet like ‘Don’t kill the Unicorns’ by Wiktoria Ferenc or even sexual like ‘Liai Joueuse’ by Alexandra Maria Sira. We’ve collaborated with 2 bloggers that really inspire us – Keira from lastdazeblog.com and Kristen from VogueDiary.blogspot.ru. Both of the girls are real professionals with perfect Messy Style to show off. We featured two super creative painters – Radoslaw Szymaniak and SELINA who are rising stars of the industry. We constantly try to up the level of layouts, editorials and content to provide aesthetically inspiring magazine. I wanna thank all photographers, stylists, models, creative directors, PR Agencies and all people who have put the creative work onto this issue! Mess Must Go On! Editor-in-Chief

DarkCandy
Candy Girl is not candy anymore! She has officially joined the darker side on the latest shoot for Mess Magazine and this is definitely not one-day change! She has prominently changed her fashion and music style. Her new album influenced by David Lynch inspired us to give her a chance to show off her darkest dreams and become whoever she wants. Dark Diva, Psycho Queen or Snow White? Choose by yourself and let your world become dark and Candy!

New album, new you, new Candy. Is Candy Girl still candy? There are many kinds of Candys. There are those that we all know, and those we hide deep inside. The latter don’t often have a chance to go out into the daylight. But yes it’s still candy. In Mess Magazine’s shoot you’ve played 4 dark characters, posing with different make-up and hair. Which character appeared to be more like you? Did you feel authentic in playing these characters? I treated it as an opportunity to be someone else for a while. I never looked like any of these characters so it was fun to be a little different than usual. I can’t imagine turn my blonde hair color on any of these that we use on the shoot. I really like my innocent look. Wig with long black hair was my favorite. I think this one appeared more like me. If you could describe a thing or a person that inspired you to make new album it would be... For sure it would be David Lynch, but it all really started at Sonar Festival in Barcelona Why David Lynch became such a huge inspiration for you that you’ve decided to make an album dedicated to him? I am a huge fan of David Lynch. I love his movies and music. He is incredibly inspiring person. When I saw his movie very first time I thought that this guy is something. Then I discovered his music and I thought this man is simply amazing. I don’t want to dedicate my new album to David Lynch. He is just like another good inspiration for my music. The album I recording is for my fans. Your music’s style is evolving all the time. What type of songs we’ll be able to listen to on new album? Electronic, blues tracks rather than smash summer hits? My new album is totally different. Everything started at the Sonar festival in Barcelona. I can tell that this festival totally changed my mind and thinking about the music. It was an amazing experience. I realized that making and playing music live turns me more than playing with the Dj and dancers on the stage. I think it’s time to go to the next level for me. Summer hits are boring, they are all about the same. I did a few and it’s enough. I’m not a party girl any more. I prefer to go to a good concert or foreing festival and that’s it. I draw out there a lot of inspiration from people, their culture and love of music.

Who influenced you and your career the most? It’s me myself and I. Everything depends on me. When it comes to fashion, which celebrities style you value the most? Who’s your style icon? I think I don’t have my own style icon. The Internet is my source of inspiration and this is where I usually find my inspiration for fashion. I like some of the fashion houses like Balmain, Balenciaga, Chanel, Disquared2, Versace, Rick Owens, Zanotti etc. When I’m in Asia I like buy clothes form the young Japanese and Hong Kong designers. What would you like to say to people who have been comparing your fashion style to Lady Gaga’s in the past few years? To be honest - nothing. These people have no idea how many things she copied. Let’s talk about other passions in your life. Many people don’t know that you’re an awarded photographer and you own the Baraccuda clothing brand. Music is still above all? I never liked talking about myself. Music is the most important thing in my life and always will be. Photography is my big passion same as fashion. I finished photographic school because I wanted to learn more about photography than how to press the shutter button or how to make a good picture. This school has given me a lot more than I expected. I’m still sealing with photography, post production and graphics and still have this great joy. Barracuda is my baby it has only been a year. Along with my sister we created it because we were missing something in fashion. Poland was flooded by printed sweatshirts and we missed classics and precious fabrics. So we decided to create Barracuda (www.barracudawear.pl) and we hope that it will find its audience among women who appreciate minimalism, lightness and classics. How did your journey with fashion started? As every girl I guess, at my mom’s closet. When I was a little girl I found many treasures there. Later I tried to sew by hand. People in my hometown think I’m weird because I experimented with fashion and this is how I expressed myself. What is your best way to express yourself? I’m doing it by music, sometimes by fashion or new interests. Rebellious period has long since passed, now I don’t have to manifest my „I”. I’m just being myself.

Where did you get such an artistic soul? Was your family artistic? Yes, everyone in my family are musicians. With me it couldn’t be different. Throughout my childhood I was singing and performed together with my family. It was a huge experience for me. Besides music has always been in our home. Later of course I began to write lyrics and produce my music. Parents also took care of my instrumental education so my instrument is the piano on which I composes most of my songs. Is there something that you’d change in your career or do twice? I live with the thought that nothing happens without a reason, so we’ll see what may be. I think it’s very important to be able to draw from our own life experience. Do not make the same mistakes or use of the opportunities that life gives us every day. Everything is in us. If you believe in yourself you will reach all - my grandmother used to say that. What gives you energy to create music? Well, good question. Because it’s the difference between having inspirations without energy. Even if your inspiration is the best in the world without energy you do nothing. So I find my energy in the passions. I love travel and read books, go for a walk with my boyfriend and get to know a new culture. It’s always like this that I have something to tell by the music, new album or new song. it’s the only way I can speak with my fans. And I would like to tell them how much I have changed, what inspires me, what hurts me and what makes me happy. I really appreciate this way of communication, because I don’t talk about my personal life on the pages of magazines or gossip portals. What I should wish you? Happiness ? Because the artist rarely feels satisfaction with life and work.

Hopes of Modern Art SELINA
@iiiamselina instagram facebook.com/iiiamselina legosel.tumblr.com
SELINA is young, independent artist that uses many apps from Android/iPhone to create collages and edit them. That unusual method helped her to build very original style and cause many striking effects. Her main inspirations are Renaissance art and sculptures, as well as singers, such as Charli XCX and Marina and the Diamonds; their original style that reminds her to be more spontaneous with artworks. SELINA is a well-known artist on Instagram where she built her audience. SELINA is a big fan of Mess Magazine and she is true definition of creativity!

RADOSLAW is young Polish painter that amazed Lukasz Jakobiak, the first Youtube’s host that invites stars, celebrities and young talents to his own 20m2 one-room-apartment. What stands behind the paintings? Radoslaw explains his vision and perception of art: “Painting and drawing are the form of art that allowed me to communicate with environment since I was young. I was very fortunate to express my feelings through painting, giving to the world an oppurtinity to see my creativity. I perceive painting as that type of art where irregardless of tools (in my case sketches), you can create whatever you want”. Mess Magazine has the pleasure to present his paintings to our audience. GRADUATE FASHION WEEK
Graduate Fashion Week has been described as the leading international event for fashion graduates across the globe and it sure is. With 22 catwalk shows and over 40 universities entered into the competition, it’s no wonder it attracts 20,000 people each year. The four day event took place Earls Court in London where Bourjois and L’Oreal helped produced the amazing hair and makeup to complete the models look. Lauren Lake opened this year’s fashion show by launching her Antarctic themed collection, which included extravagant outfits inspired by her mountain ski trips. Among the other collections, Junaid Nasar from UCA Epsom presented his menswear range complete with metallic detailing and vinyl panelling. Whilst Children modelled Hatti Lines’ collection dressed in fluorescent carnival wear and tribal prints, which brought a different personality to the show.

HOTTEST Covers This Year . . .(so far) Candice Swanepoel definitely tops the rank with this super hot cover for Vogue’s Brazil January issue. Can’t get hotter then straddling… Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s L’Officiel Hommes Cover shot by Nick Knight look as though they are having an orgasmic experience. This titillating cover gained immediate attention and now we await the full spread to grace our presence. Nick Knight stays true to his style, with monochrome images that are extremely intimate of the newly wed couple in shots that look slightly de-saturated, enhancing the tastefulness of their seductive nudity.
Rita Ora’s just recently got to show off her latest tattoo, which the artist Bang Bang inked for her, and it takes center stage. The sensual singer wears with a pastel pink Dior skirt, iconic red lipstick and Cartier bracelet with her hair swept back. Thomas Whiteside, who wanted to make a bold statement for the hot British talent in the May Issue, took the graceful shot.
Miley Cyrus surprises us with yet another nude photo-shoot, this time for the German Vogue March issue. A racy Mariyln Monroe doppleganger, the famous Mario Testino breaches no levels as he captures smiley Miley in short 50s curls, covering her breasts with her immaculate red nails. As a polarizing style icon and controversial pop figure Miley is on fire.

“Best and Worst Dressed...” Why do we love Cannes Film Festival so much? Because it lacks of pomposity that prevails at the Oscars and with a simple touch of retro-glam reminds us of good, old golden 60’s era. So who rocked the French Riviera red carpet this year? We played a little fashion police game, check out for yourselves whether we needed the bad cop or not.

ADRIANA LIMA IN ALEXANDER VAUTHIER COUTURE
Bright and sleeky – is that a night gown? The “gown” part is right, but the time of the day just wasn’t – this look is just underdone. The bottom of Adriana Lima’s dress is perfect, but doesn’t rescue the entire look from the linen corset… This is not a daydream, it’s a regular nightmare.

Food + Fashion = Jeremy Scott Peculiar Mind, Peculiar Fashion After typing “Jeremy Scott” into the google search engine the information about his birth date is - surprisingly - uneasy to be found. Why? Probably because out of all the questions you could ask Scott, the one about his age is the most boring. With his latest readyto-wear fast food extravaganza he became one of the most peculiar phenomenon on the stage of fashion, but let’s start at the beginning. Growing up in Kansas, Missouri is the most mysterious part of Jeremy Scott’s life, there’s practically no information about that period. Every bio available starts at the point when young Jeremy attends Pratt Institute in Brooklyn for studying Fashion Design. Coincidence? I don’t think so. Scott has consistently denied hungry for sensation media the pleasure of writing about him in fashion unrelated context. Instead, he provided them with all sorts of other sensations, first one being accusations of slavery reference in one of his shoes designs for Adidas. The outrage that spread around the world was striking, especially since Scott revealed the direct source of inspiration for this project, which was My Pet Monster.
184
m e s s m ag . c o m
The resemblance is undeniable and I don’t think anyone believes it was a slap in the face of American history, but once the word “slave” came up, the shoes had to be killed. Sensation number two was the alleged plagiarism of Santa Cruz Skateboards designs. The prints on Jeremy Scott’s were very much alike the works of art put on the famous skateboards, so Scott just signed the settlement and ceased the production of collection. A tragedy? To some, probably. But hip Mr Jeremy seems to have a much more distant approach to fashion.
The example is right in front of us, in the shape of latest Moschino collection inspired by fast food and candy wrappings. The idea behind it is very clear to me. It’s not even so much about the “fast culture” that we live in, it’s rather a giant middle finger to all those who think they’ve been saving lives in the fashion industry. Because in fact, there are many people who show the savior-attitude, as if fashion design was a profession of so much importance that it is comparable to a doctor’s. Saying that designers are not needed would be preposterous, but saying that some of them should sometimes get a more objective view of themselves – that is reasonable. Which is exactly why I think I know what Jeremy Scott’s telling us thorough his McCollection: you can dress yourself all you want, but at the end of the day the clothes goes off and you’re left naked with nothing else but your attitude. Deal with it. So if anybody still desires to know Jeremy Scott’s birth date, it’s 8th of August 1975. But I predict you’d rather Google “Moschino RTW Fall/Winter 2014” than his age, at least I’d like to believe so. After all, his creative flow is much more interesting to admire than his zodiac sign.

RESORT 2015 LOUIS VUITTON, MONACO The Grand Prix shadows Monaco in the weeks before its arrival, but the weekend before its opening definitely belonged to Louis Vuitton. The LV team set up a translucent tent with custom-made seating for three hundred guests in the Place du Palais, and also featured a visit from Prince Albert and Princess Charlene, accompanied by a battalion of security guards. The Cruise collection itself was Ghesquiere’s second show for the LV powerhouse, and he appeared to be having quite a good deal of fun: patchworking mismatched prints, embroidering lace with miniscule beads; accessorizing with spiked belts and gladiator sandals that inched up toward the knees. He called it “a game of colours,”, making his debut look almost dull by comparison. The curtains closed and moving images of water flowing over rocks, shot by the artist Ange Leccia in Corsica, began playing on the video screens installed in the floor. “I liked the spirit of the girls walking on digital water,” Ghesquiere said. Nautical motifs were apparent in the clothes, with coral embroidered on a skirt, and the top it was paired with was decorated with cut out ‘portholes’. Formula One was another reference, in the form of a racing car red leather jacket and a jersey dress printed with a chequered flag motif. The sensational first look: a silk top inset with LV’s iconic pattern and a pair of those high-waisted flares, very similar to the ones Ghesquière used to create at Balenciaga. Ghesquie re seems to be enjoying himself at Vuitton: “I am. I’m inspired and I’m very happy.” He said.

DIOR BROOKLYN, NYC The likes of Rihanna, Marion Cotillard, Margot Robbie, the artist Sterling Ruby, and designers Christian Louboutin, Proenza Schouler’s Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough arrived by water taxi and town car to witness fashion history in the making: Dior in Brooklyn. This resort collection was another vivacious, chic and stylish display from artistic director Raf Simons. The designer says he wants to deliver typical French chic to his new American clients, after only two years at Dior. Simons took up the classic silk scarf as the show’s leitmotif. It meant that these clothes were more fluid than the modernist silhouettes of some of his previous collections for Dior. The collection seemed overall, a softer and breezier approach, without forgetting the clean, modern look that is Simons’ trademark.
STELLA MCCARTNEY, NYC The queen of British fashion presented her new collection in Elizabeth Street Garden, NYC. The collection was unveiled with flair: live band, the statue performers, and an all-star crowd that included supermodels of the moment Cara Delevingne and Jourdan Dunn. The designer herself seemed confident and upbeat with her resort collection, offering this reporter a drink before talking about her creations. Colour was a large factor in the new collection, with a hoard of print and stripes, cut-outs and pleats, a world away from the ‘black is the new black’ trend so often displayed by other designers. “They’re inspired by my mum, and by my dad, actually, and by that period of time that was free and easy and not uptight,” McCartney explained. McCartney mixed up colours, prints and shapes to create a generation-spanning cornucopia of fun: clutch bags in the shapes of comic book characters’ masks brought out the kids in the crowd, paired with trademark loose tailoring in unexpected colours, all perched on towering platform sandals. It certainly was a bundle of fun.

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN, NYC
The true monarch of all things fashion, Alexander McQueen’s McQ Resort 2015 stood alone against many other designers with the festival floral theme. ‘Festival dressing’ usually strikes fear into the hearts of many, thanks to hoards of identical uniforms of floral wreaths and crop tops, finished off with a pair of wellingtons. Surprisingly, Sarah Burton’s digital prints managed to turn the whole idea of ‘festival’ on its head. Among the flowers, there were an abundance of cigarette butts, crushed water bottles and litter, to keep the festival ground vibe alive. Chiffon crepe against a boyish bomber jacket, a white shirt printed with an image from the 1996 Dante collection. Zippers on dresses, opening wide to expose lots of skin or to unzip completely into a top and skirt that can be worn as separates. In true festival style, a giant anorak in a khaki/olive colour made out of a parachute silk, and an oversize pale blue motorcycle jacket. The collection displayed a range of festival classics, as well as some feminine and masculine pieces such as the contrasting floaty dresses and shorts, against the sculpted silhouettes of coats and shirts. Overall, this resort 2015 collection offered a perfect twist on a popular, if not slightly overdone, theme.
CHANEL, DUBAI The show was staged by Karl Lagerfleld in a crumbling theatre in Dubai. Against the dilapidated ruins, a contrasting vision of a sci-fi skyline, the future. “This is something totally unexpected. You couldn’t imagine it fifty years ago.” Lagerfeld exclaimed enthusiastically, “Better to do that than the sixties, the seventies, what everyone else does,” he said, with a hint of defensiveness. “This is my idea of a romantic, modern Orient, a new One Thousand and One Nights.” The venue itself was a seemingly solid hangar, creating a fantasia whipped up on a strip of sand, complete with a performance by Janelle Monáe. This show seems to have offered Lagerfeld the nothing-is-quite-what-it-seems effect that he desires. Lagerfeld toyed with the local design in the use of gilding and the sickle-moon motif—plus a gargantuan outbreak of iconic harem pants, often paired with tunic tops hemmed in a sequined version of the Dubai skyline. This collection was heavily themed, yet had a distinct wearable vibe, appealing to women internationally. 188

Supermodel life DRAWINGS BY EWELINA DYMEK
y t i l a e in r
When it’s time to play and spend all that hardearned dough, Supermodels are either dining with Dicaprio’s or sunbathing on a bespoke super yacht. When it’s time for work the supermodels get serious, a standard day for Christy Turlington in the 1990s would be waking up from around 7am, to a bowl of plain porridge, and a two hour workout. A standard day for Christy Turlington in the 1990s would be then jetting off to have a interview with her charity organization she is the spokeswoman for a thousand miles away in Paris. Soon to be followed by an all day shoot in London for a mllion dollar Calvin Klein ready to wear campaign only to jet back off in the early hours of the am to in time for a film premiere in New York only cramming in sleep on the plane.
to the Supermodel title. Though modern supermodels such as Cara Delevingne and Joan Smalls can surely put that argument to test. Estee Lauder’s senior vice president and global creative director, Richard Ferretti, told Elle: ‘The word supermodel is overused, but if there is any woman of our generation who deserves the title, it’s Joan. She has the perfect face.
Gisele Bündchen who reportedly made $42 million last year, according to Schiffer and many other previous supermodels is the only supermodel of our era who even comes close
However envy-inspiring parts about the life of a Supermodel is said to be just an illusion, the dehydration, starvation and lack of sleep is apparently the truth behind many Supermodels. These days we no longer have models that are topping the ranks as Supermodels as we did in the 90s with faces such as Kate Moss, Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell, who became as famous as movie stars, but it seems we have a few rising stars about to snatch that title from Gisele! m e s s m ag . c o m

adidas x it’s the Year of Collaborations
We’ve just hit halfway in 2014, and Adidas have already had plenty of big collaborations up their sleeves, with big names, and sold-out products. From high street, to high end, the sports-wear brand is becoming an upcoming
trend for this year’s street style, with co-ords and vibrant prints, making them one of the most haves in a wardrobe. Since the growth in casual sportswear these past two years and the trend still ongoing, the brands audience has grown, making bloggers and fashion-lovers absolutely crazy. So who’s got involved and what are we expecting?
adidas x Farm
Think of tropical, think of co-ords and ideal summer set. Adidas collaborated with farm, to create a range of matching vests, shorts, jackets and trainers in the style of Adidas Originals, ideal for lounging around on those hot days and festivals. Focusing all energy and inspiration on Brazil this year for the world cup, the brand have prints from pineapples, to floral to birds. Now available online and instore.
adidas x Topshop
Another big Adidas originals collaboration to hit the high street was Topshop x Adidas. Pastel prints, and cool colours, the sports chic collection is another must have for all you Topshop fans. The big British brand we’re able to get creative with their sport side, creating a wide range of shorts, vests, sweats and trainers, which are all easy to wear and layer with co-ordination palettes. adidas x Opening Ceremony Think weird and wacky sports footwear, and you get one of
Adidas’s early collaborations of this year. With the American luxury outlet store Opening Ceremony, Adidas have collaborated to create a wide selection of shoes sportswear, and Taekwondo inspired collection. Shaped into a light-weight, each trainer has the theme of Black and White, making this collection on that stands out of all this year.
adidas x Mary Katranzou
Due to be released for 2014 autumn/winter, the London-based, CSM graduate designer has also got collaboration in store with the brand. With herself and her work having loads of attention by press, designers and bloggers these past 3 years, May Katranzou is set to release with a brand, which is ‘exciting’ for her, due to herself being a fan of the brand. Expect bright prints, colours, and patterns for this collection.
adidas x Raf Simons
So far, the last collection of all is Adidas’s Autumn/Winter collection with designer Raf Simmons. Instead of just clothing and Adidas Originals styles, the designer has followed Opening Ceremony with creating a range of trainers. All five trainers come in different colours and styles, with the names of Bounce, Stan Smith RS, Forumla One, Super Trekker and Rising Star 2. Each trainer is unique, but with RAF SIMONS embossed in the heel. All Available later this year.
So what’s the next big project Adidas are going to surprise us with next? m e s s m ag . c o m

Saint Laurent holds a huge impact on the industry today, during his early days and today. The film unravels
the story, to show what he went through and his experiences to get to where YSL is today.
Directed by Jalil Lespert, the French film brings Yves himself back to life, with actor Pierre Niney being a
main role, and Guillaume Gallienne as Pierre Berge. The film takes you through his life and experiences from 1950s to 1990’s. In 2001, Yves Saint Laurent

FLUME
“Harley Streten has conquered the world of vibrant basses all by himself.” The most current name in the wide pool of electronic artists right now, beloved by both party fans and those who prefer home chillout – Flume. Who’s hiding under this enigmatic designation? A single guy. Harley Streten has conquered the world of vibrant basses all by himself. Born in 1991 in Australia, has joined the group of young music-creators who succeed before they turned 20 (such as the Disclosure duet or the buzzy rebel Lorde) in 2012 – the year of his’ debut album release. And what led to that happen? First of all, the simple disc that somehow came with the box of cereals. And then, Future Classic contest, where Streten submitted 3
tracks: “Sleepless”, “Over you” and “Paper thin”. One of them, “Sleepless”, has been featured on Flume’s first (and hopefully, not the last) full-length music album. Listening to Flume’s tracks like Drop the Game or his remix of Disclosure’s You & Me (featuring Eliza Doolittle) is a tiny little bit like floating in the atmosphere of soft sounds. This cosmic dream is broken by strong bass line, which is the secret of multi-utility of Flume’s music – you can easily wave your hips into the vivid rhythm as well as just sip some wine and read a book at home. Whichever way you find more convenient – you will be in love with Streten’s album sooner than you think you would!

AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY When I first saw the “August: Osage County” poster I thought to myself: “Oh, this is going to be a nice, salty sweet comedy with not-so-surprising point at the end, but lot's of insightful dialogues”. Why did I think that? On the poster we see Meryl Streep as a head of the family smiling a bit teasingly, lot's of food, lot's of people who seem to be a bit fisty but loving family. That's what you see at first.

The whole point of gathering the entire family in Osage is to find Vivian's husband, who disappeared one day and can't be found. That's when it all begins. Daughters, sisters, husbands, cousins – they find themselves in a situation of obligation, that bounds them only in terms of physical distance.
“The film is nothing like I thought it would be.”
The action of the film pictures few days from all those people's lives as they meet altogether, being so close for the first time in a very long period, but so far apart on any other level. It's clear that most of the family members can't stand their relatives or – best-case scenario – they just don't enjoy each other's company so much. And in all that iritation and impatience thay have towards each other they have to tip toe around Vivian. Vivian is having a very tragic moment of her life but the movie rises a very important, often feared-to-be-asked ques-

Julianne Nicholson looks like she can't escape with her body, but she sure can with her mind. Margo Martindale's complaining attitude becomes obvious, Meryl Streep lost all her “sceptical, but warm” image and I can see how she just looks down on all of us. And finally, all the men in a state of a complete incomprehention for all the anger and bitterness. The picture looks nice to a person who doesn't know the whole story, but if you're just a bit more observant than I was, you'd know that those faces smile only for the camera.
