EDITOR’S LETTER We all love Summer. It’s the time for having fun, travelling, sunbathing, friends and fresh food. Hot temperature, long days and a couple of drinks make every summer an unforgettable experience that can stick in our memories forever. I wanted to release the Summer Issue at the end of summer so all of you’d have a fresh memory and remember the best moments from your summertime. Secretly, we all dream of an endless summer, but unfortunately, all good things come to an end. Fortunately, in some places like Bali, the weather is always good. That’s why we shot our cover there with the beautiful Inka Williams. Inka was styled and shot by Tom Wawnik as a Tribal Princess living in the jungle. Enormous headbands, boho style clothing and lots of jewellery incredibly emphasized the feeling of being in Jungle! We caught the tribal, boho vibes of Bali and we can’t get rid of them! Hopefully, you will feel like you are in Heaven after seeing that editorial, because Bali, to be honest, is undeniably a Heaven on Earth. Summer vibes continue to appear on other pages of the editorials from talented photographers: ‘Flora by Katarina Hildebrandt (reminds us of iconic Cara Delevigne’s photo shoot in bathtub), Wildfox Couture shoot with our fave blogger Lala Meow from lastdazeblog.com, ‘Urban Adventure’ from Brenda Waworga, ‘Basket’ - the sporty version of fashion by Piotr Stankiewicz, ‘Pineapple Love’ by Paulina Jarzembska from Gdansk Beach, ‘Colour Mess’ – a beauty shoot that showcases 5 different colour make-up variations by Sharon Back and minimalistic ‘Blue Futuro’ by Marta Macha! We published a few of amazing artists from #FRESHMESS including Robyn Yeang, Rob Gardner, Kristina McManus, Bita Cuartas, Emanuele Ferrari, Alexandra Petcu, Anja Ekstroem, AniaCywińska, David SHC, Ricky Dorn, Tania Olive, Youssef Nassar and Anna Zyskowska. Read interviews with Daria Shapovalova (model, journalist and founder of Ukrainian Fashion Week), Kyle Anderson (Marie Claire’s Accessories Director and street style star), Maria Soromenho (emerging UK designer that can be compared to Alexander McQueen), Sofi Strokatto (one of the most popular fashion designers in Russia). Follow Fall 2014 trends, be inspired by Paris Fashion Week, discover internationally known bloggers – Sonya Esman from Class is Internal and Gian Maria Saintato, know which music festivals are the hottest, see who is the social media influencer nowadays, read about psychology of visual merchandising and much more! Just open the issue and let Fashion come to you! I want you, Dear Reader, remember this issue as Summertime Reminder. Just visualise your best moments – trips, concerts, parties, sunbathing time or any other pleasant experiences you may had this Summer. Enjoy Summer Issue!

I have been asked to round up the hottest news trends that our MESS team has accumulated the past year and we have managed to cover some incredible, creative and inspiring news. Here are the top 10 that I feel represent what MESS is all about and supports.
MESS always wants to give their readers a great behind the scenes interview into the people behind the creativity within magazines, blogs and art because even though a picture is worth a thousand words sometimes a few extra is wanted to give a fuller understanding into what happens behind the lens. m e s s m ag . c o m

The news post announced to our readers our official start date for a collaborations with the biggest Fashion TV Channel in the world.
Spreading the news of Mulberry’s latest campaign and promotion. With our favourite Brit girl Cara. This brings the beautiful Scottish highlands to our MESS readers and shows another A/W campaign that we love; the classic British style.
We love to show our support for the up and coming. Always on the look out for new creatives that bring inspiration to our newsfeed and site!
Having been to the Isabella presentation myself in London I was incredibly saddened that you weren’t allowed to take photos, even though some people were taking cheeky photos on their phones, it wouldn’t have been the best quality and you wouldn’t get to see a whole visual impact of it. This news post shows you the best parts of the presentation!

Following our trend of welcoming new talent one of our MESS team posted about Anemian’s fantastic achievement. With tough competition and judges such as Erdem and Vogue’s Serena Hood!
Who loves a beautiful and whimsical editorial more then MESS? This combination of a ‘Alice in Wonderland’ theme (without the psychedelic effects!) and Cara brings us to the feminine Mulberry Spring/Summer Campaign.
I’ve saved the best till last. Anyone who knows anything about fashion, even those who do not, have heard of SJP or rather Carrie Bradshaw in her iconic role on Sex and the City. The shoe lover presented us her ideal shoe collection and so MESS shared this juicy news to our readers.

A Day in the life of
A FASHION EDITOR Giulia Bardelli
The fashion world really isn’t an easy one to get hooked up in. It is ever changing and unpredictable and is definitely one of those industries that require you to be updated by the minute, very much like other professions nowadays. To be a fashion editor, and a highly regarded one in that case, it takes a lot of patience, perseverance and good communication skills. Now, what is a fashion editor some may ask? A fashion editor is the face behind the creating, developing and presenting content for the fashion department of a magazine. They are in charge of what is published in that area of the magazine and create a whole aesthetic behind it, therefore branding is crucial. A fashion editor may have lots of other jobs on the side too which include: visiting new or already established designers to find unique items to feature in the magazine. In many cases the interviews are not only conducted during office hours, which makes the day a lot more packed from rushing from one end of the city to another.

Today, there is no doubt that fashion’s most influential editor is Anna Wintour. Having been Editor-In-Chief of American Vogue since 1988 she has certainly had a great impact in the world of fashion and built a name and business for herself. From being photographed at social events, mostly fashion shows, with other leading names in the industry such as André Leon Talley, Karl Lagerfeld and Grace Coddington, she is always in great and leading company. Although she leads a very eventful life, by attending fashion launches and A-list parties, she has had her low points. In 1975 she was fired from Harper’s Bazaar but it only seems like this was a turning point as she said, “I recommend that you all get fired. It's a great learning experience.” Life advice from the legend herself. A day in the life of a fashion editor is hectic but the great part about this profession is that not everyday is the same. It’s a very spontaneous industry. Victoria Lewis, Editor at Teen Vogue says “I'm lucky to have a job where no two days are ever the same, so it never gets boring.”

aka Sonya Esman – model, blogger and aspiring actress from classisinternal.com
Sonya has a very modest view on herself and has pride not in winning the genetic lottery, as she describes as the main attributes to modelling, but in have the self assurance and determination to leave school during the eleventh grade and getting home schooled. Acting is her first love due to her creatively buzzing and expressive personality! Anyone just has to look at her youtube videos to see how full of bubbly energy she is. And it translated into the interview for mess. Even though she has accomplished so much already, being in a Disney movie, on suits AND project runway (getting to become bff’s with Zac Posen!? Just awesome) she is a goal orientated person and aims to move to the big apple to continue on her ever expanding lists of projects to do.

KYLE ANDERSON
Kyle Anderson. Accessories director of Marie Claire. One of the most recognizable fashion editors in the world. Street style Icon. Stylist. Model. Consultant. Shopping lover.
1. How did you start your journey with fashion? I had always dreamed of working in fashion. I wasn’t quite sure exactly what I wanted to do though. I moved to NYC in 2001 and interned for over 2 years at a few different magazines. Esquire, CosmoGirl, Marie Claire, Vogue and Elle. I finally started getting freelance jobs – first in the fashion closet at Vanity Fair, then at Cosmo and then at Elle. Working at Elle was my dream job – especially in the accessories department. I was lucky enough to get hired full time there and stayed there for over 6 years. After, I got hired at Marie Claire and I’ve been here 3 years as Accessories director. 2. Do you have any advice for people who would like to start the career in fashion? For sure. There are so many careers in fashion that are all very different. I’d suggest interning at a few different kinds of places like a press office, magazine, etc to see what you actually like. 3. What does your average day look like? I usually have a work breakfast with a designer or a designer’s press person most mornings to talk about new things that are going on at their brand and to reconnect with them. Then, sometimes I have appointments where I preview new collections. After, I go to the office and stay there until around 6 or 7 working on my accessories stories or our shopping guides or helping stylist find what they need for their stories. 4. If you would have to choose between writing, styling and modelling, you would pick… I like collaborating with talented photographers on creating inspiring images with accessories. Every season I find things at the runway shows that inspire me but i want to take those items and create images that make readers think about those items differently. I want to create a fantasy. Its something that sets what I do apart from what bloggers do. 5. You have just come back from Paris Fashion Week – what was the most inspirational thing you’ve seen on the runway? I loved the Dior show. At haute couture we see a lot of beautiful things. at Dior, it wasn’t one thing in particular, but it was the venue, the clothes, the models, etc. an overall feeling that was amazing. 6. Who is your fashion hero? Maybe Carine Roitfeld. She has done a lot of things while she
42
m e s s m ag . c o m
was at Vogue Paris that continue to inspire me even today, years after she has left the magazine. 7. Which of the hot trends for upcoming Fall will take over the streets soon? Probably sneakers. Fashion girls have never really worn sneakers. It would have been rare to see a female editor in sneakers a few years ago, but now a lot of designers have shown couture versions like at chanel, dior, etc. which I expect to see on girls at fashion week.
NOSREDNA ELYK 8. Which artists influenced you the most? Ii love art but to me my inspiration really comes from random places. Not really famous artists or well-known people. I get inspired by things I see on the street, by graffiti, by even things I see at somewhere like a building supply store or on instagram. 9. If you could work with one person that you love the most, that would be… Probably Carine Roitfeld or Carlyne Cerf. Two amazing and inspiring stylists. I can’t decide. 10. How do you measure the influence of social media in fashion world? Do you think bloggers did change the industry? I think honestly social media is so important right now. I think depending on how its used it can really effect sales for a company. I know a lot of brands that sell a lot of accessories via posting photos of them on instagram or twitter. I think bloggers have changed the industry. but I think also right now people are a bit tired of bloggers. I don’t think anyone is reading their blogs right now. its more about instagram and using that as a platform. I think people have shorter and shorter attention spans. They almost aren’t reading now just looking at pics with short captions for quick info. 11. Which celebrity style inspires youthe most? Maybe Rihanna. She’s the only one who mixes the biggest runway items with streetwear. 12. What are your must-haves this Summer? Infortunately summer items are gone and pre-fall is even on its way out of stores now. Fall will be here in another week at most stores. I’d say I want to by sneakers from Chanel or Dior, a shearling colorful bag from Celine or Chanel, and a padlock necklace from Chanel. I guess I only want Chanel :) 13. What are your nearest future plans? I love working at a magazine but I want to connect with more people than doing only accessories editorials. I still have to figure out what that will be. I’d hope to be on television or another platform that helps me interact with people who love fashion or at least inspire people somehow.

Paris Fashion Week Chanel A/w '14 The Grand Palais was given a supermarket inspired makeover during Paris Fashion Week, the shelves were complete with stocked shelves of groceries branded Chanel. There was Chanel water, Chanel juice and Chanel’s very own wine. Cara Delavigne opened the Chanel show by leading a string of top models around Chanel’s very own supermarket. The models “shopped” their way around the glamorous supermarket with most dressed in candy coloured pink trousers, with a cropped jumper layered under an oversized grey coat. Kendall Jenner was spotted on the runway wearing a black coat with pink and purple hues. All the outfits were complete with a long bushy ponytail and trainers – some even extending to the knee. Even Chanel’s famous quilted shoulder bag was kept in a cling film inspired plastic to keep with the supermarket theme. At the end of the show there was an announcement inviting the audience to go up and take home the fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs. Chanel’s autumn/winter fashion show amazed us because Karl Lagerfeld managed to come up with the original idea of having a supermarket theme and making it look like the models were shopping whilst displaying his new designs, this will definitely be one of Lagerfeld’s most memorable work. m e s s m ag . c o m

Elie Saab A/W '14 Elie Saab is well known for his collection of dresses, his fairy-tale style of dresses is perfect for the prom season and all brides to be. Unless you are a serious tomboy you won’t be able to help falling in love with at least one of Saab’s elegant dresses. During the fashion show Saab unveiled a new stunning collection of dresses in different colours such as pale blue, pink, flesh coloured, black and the classic ivory. Most of the dresses were long in length but all were sprinkled with crystals and pearls to match the base colour underneath. Elie Saab’s never fails to impress us with his outstanding dresses.
Louis Vuitton A/w '14 Bags After Marc Jacobs departure Nicolas Ghesquiere has brought Louis Vuitton into a new direction by bringing back one of Louis Vuitton’s original accessories, the bag. Nicolas Ghesquiere took it back to the roots by resurrecting the monogrammed trunks during his Autumn/Winter Paris fashion show. The new styles also included a modern leather bag with two handles and a splash of blue. The trunks better known as Malles in French were shrunk into the most minute and attractive form possible, 48
m e s s m ag . c o m
during his first show for Louis Vuitton the bags were swinging on the models shoulder thanks the elongated strap. What amazed us is that Ghesquiere used his first ever fashion show at Louis Vuitton to not only show off his new designs but to also re invent one of Vuitton’s most classic and timeless pieces in a wearable way today.
Louis Vuitton A/w '14 During the last day of the Paris Fashion Week Nicolas Ghesquiere closed the show unveiling his first ever collection for Louis Vuitton. Despite previously being the creative director for the fashion house Balenciaga there was plenty of anticipation to see what he had in store for Louis Vuitton. As he debuted his large collection there were may wearable separates including a long matte black coat with a fur collar perfect for the autumn/winter season. The collection had a certain girliness about it but was rich in fabrics such as brushed Shetland wool, crocodile and printed moleskin. What amazed us about Ghesquiere’s is that he managed to incorporate 60’s fashion and make it relevant today with the use of above knee A- line skirts, raided waistlines and Chelsea boots.

1. Searching Internet for any informations about you is futile! Let us take down this curtain of mystery for a moment and tell us - who is Maria Soromenho? Where did she come from? I was born in Portugal and lived in Setubal and Lisbon until over 4 years ago when I moved to Paris. Since then I’ve also lived in New York and London - where I’m mainly based! I studied stage design and interned in many, many fashion studios. I made my first capsule collection roughly a year ago and that’s how “this” started….
5. Where do you get your inspirations from - is it movies, streets, literature? Or maybe anything else?
2. How come you've lived in so many places around the world?
I’m very influenced by art and just walking down the streets (people!) - definitely inspired by what surrounds me. I look for inspiration and research a lot but the best ideas mainly come when I’m not expecting them.
I always wanted to travel a lot so as soon as I finished high school the moving around felt like a “natural” thing to do.
6. Do you have your favourite artist, one that never fails to inspire you?
3. Out of all those fantastic places, where did you study?
Patti Smith
I studied in Lisbon, Paris and London. 4. Who did you want to become professionally as a little girl? Did you always imagine you'd be a designer or was that a rather unexpected twist?
88
I always wanted to do something related with clothes and/ or dressing up. Not necessarily making them. As a kid I used to change my outfit 3x a day and make my friends wear my clothes every time they were at mine. I had a big drawer with my “play clothes.” So everyone had to dress up and I would normally decide on the clothes. Some where really old made out of amazing fabrics from my grandmother.
m e s s m ag . c o m
7. Many of the young designers are rather into creating ‘most wanted’ pieces, like bags, dresses, jumpers. Why scarves? The idea is to make the scarf a “most wanted”. People that wear scarfs dress up and I think we need a bit more dressing up nowadays…it’s been too boring for too long.
8. Can you tell us sonething about this new collection, what can we expect when it's announced? It will be announced in October. The lookbook format will be completely different and a scarves exhibition/installation in London is being planned for October/November. 9. Do you have any on-going projects that you would like to share with us? I’m working on my SS15 collection. The idea is to go back to my original idea of doing everything hand-made. (well not the scarves though!) Of making each piece unique. Not fast fashion - this was the reason I wanted to start my own brand! I’m doing everything myself from sourcing fabrics, cutting, sewing, embroidery etc. I’ll also photograph the lookbook (which will have a totally different concept this time…) I like the idea of everything being 100% hands-on. 10. What's your ultimate goal? Is Maria Soromenho aiming to become an international brand or is the plan different? I’d love to become international and really, really big. I want to make a name for myself in order to be able to do whatever I want. I would like to style musicians, collaborate with artists, etc. I believe in the idea of uniting forces in order to create a stronger and more effective message. This is what I truly want to do. I guess that creating my own brand will be my ‘passport’ for a whole lot of other things.
The song that energises you the most: Cocteau Twins - Lorei / Jesus and the Mary Chain - Head On The song that calms you down: I’ll be Your Mirror - The Velvet Underground Your favourite comfort food: Italian! Best comedy movie: Night on Earth - Jim Jarmusch Best drink for summer: Caipirinha Favourite season of the year: Spring The city that makes you feel at home: Not sure
11. We found you through your Tumbler site. Why did you choose this Social media for promotion? Do you choose any other social channel? I do am all over social media! 12. What's your favourite off-duty activity? Live music. I love it! I try to go to as much gigs as I can. And travel! 13. What would be the most precious advice anyone ever gave you? And what would be the advice you would pass on to young designers out of your own experience? I think that my favourite quote answers this question quite well: “I owe my success to having listened respectfully to the very best advice, and then going away and doing the exact opposite.” G. K. Chesterton.

INSTAGRAM – CARA DELEVINGNE
With rising to stardom on the catwalk these past two years, you come to wonder what she gets up to every day. With having facebook fan pages and personal twitter account, instagram comes on top. Documenting her everyday life, there’s always something exciting to see on her instagram profile. From tattoos, to onset photoshoots, and even campaigns Cara D’s instagram is far from plain. With 6.43 million followers there’s no doubt that she is the most wanted supermodel. The fame of instagram and her army of fans, Cara Develingne has even used her popularity to an advantage and even filmed a exclusive instagram video of a POV on the catwalk of GILES SS14 and to spread the campaign of ‘freethenipple’.
Being one of the most adored ‘pop’ singers in the industry, Katy Perry comes on top with 55 million followers (and yes thats 30million more than Justin Bieber shockingly!). The all quirky singer frequently updates, filled with sneak-peaks, thoughts and little snippets of her busy lifestyle. Additionally, this popularity is a key way to promoting new singles and videos with the power of hashtag which Perry clearly takes full advantage of, and keep a ongoing relationship with her fans. FACEBOOK - SHAKIRA
Fanbases on Facebook. There are hundreds of them! But with Shakira being one of the most ‘well-known’ singers of this generation, and not to mention being in the top 20 of most followed on twitter, it’s no surprise she has got atleast one top spot. Being one of the biggest fanbase pages on facebook, with 102 million likes she’s just speeding ahead of artist Rihanna who has came down as second. Again like twitter, this page is her hotspot for all things new, singles and stores with keeping a ongoing relationship with her fans (such as her #TBT posts). We wonder, could this number count get any higher?
Vine has become the hotspot for 6 second videos, filled with onliners, plain silly situations and the rise and fall of many ‘internet sensations’. Although celebrities have jumped on the bandwagon and brands using it an ideal marketing technique, Vine is still the home for average people and their ways of expressing opinions and thoughts (with a bit of humor). Take Nash Grier for example. Since joining the Vine world a year ago, he has created iconic internet worthy videos, making him one of the most followed at 9.2million followers. With his cute famous videos of him spending time with his sister, we can understand why everyone wants to follow him (aw!).

Makes us think, could the social media industry grow any bigger? Are there any ore possibilities with new platforms to come? With blogging and tweeting becoming a way of life, and connecting with other people and fan bases, it’ll be interesting to see next year who tops the number one spot for most followers. Who do you think?

A man with a saxophone and a blonde with an angelic voice - I bet that the name of the band reflects on the contrast between it's two members, Elliot and Natalie Bergman. Don't get tricked - it's not a married couple kind of duet, it's a brother-and-sister combination. The band was born in 2011, after Elliot quit his former band NOMO and started to work with Natalie on the songs she created. They grew up in Chicago, but the music they're playing is less industrial and more reggae, folk and indie rock. A mixture like that can be deadly, but the secret of Wild Belle is that none of the genders they mix is intrusive, they all blend together into a completely unique and pleasing sound. The diversity of their 118
m e s s m ag . c o m
music was reflected in the title of Wild Belle's album title Isles, that refers to the fact that each and every track is an isle of different genre. Elliot Bergman is a multi-instrumentalist educated at University of Michigan and Natalie debuted in NOMO's songs playing tambourine and singing backing vocals. Wild Belle is a frequent guest on US festivals, including Lollapalooza, Coachella and Forecastle Festival. Wild Belle music was also appreciated as a great soundtrack for movies and TV series, like Conan, Pitch Perfect and ABC hit Grey's Anatomy.

Music festivals are no doubt the height of everyone’s summer. One of the main reasons as to why music festivals are so successful today is because they all set off their own vibe and have their respective themes. It enables youths to get lost in the music whilst spending time with their closest friends. Above all, it’s a great place to really showcase your festival style. Nowadays there is an endless variety of music festivals adapted to everyone’s music taste, whether it being indie, rock, pop or house music. The UK has some leading music festivals of the world such as Glastonbury, V Fest and Reading festival. Glastonbury Festival is said to be the world’s largest greenfield music festival as it is now attended by around 175,000 people each year. The festival is very influenced by the hippie ethics and free festival movement in the early 1970’s and is attended by many celebrities. This year’s line-up included many great acts such as The Black Keys, Arcade Fire and London Grammar. V Fest is a music festival for those who are constantly updated with the latest hits as this year the festival included more of the popular musical artists such as Bastille, Ed Sheeran and Lily Allen (just to name a few). Reading Festival is the world’s oldest popular music
festival still in existence, being first held in 1961. This gives you just a taste as to how successful and chaotic it is. Here the acts d The Neighbourhood, Metronomy and Warpaint. In the US the most acclaimed music festivals are no doubt Coachella and Lollapalooza. Coachella is located in the Colorado Desert and known for having a bohemian vibe it’s where all the celebrities go and there’s a great mix of music too! This year popular acts included Pharrell Williams, OutKast and Lorde. Although the weather may be very hot, it’s a place to set your wildest musical dreams free. Lollapalooza is a music festival in Chicago and more for those who are fans of punk rock, alternative rock and hip hop bands. This year’s hottest and freshest acts included Childish Gambino, Eminem and Fitz & The Tantrums. For those who need to feed their electric hearts, Tomorrowland is the place to be. It is one of the largest electronic music festivals, which is held in Belgium. It has even won the award for the Best Music Event (in the years 2012, 2013 and 2014) at the International Dance Music Awards. This year’s acts included DJ Snake, Hardwell and Armin Van Buuren.

ALS ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE COUNTDOWN
We have all heard of the latest craze to hit the social media sites. From no make up selfies to nek nominations and finally the latest, and dare I say, funniest challenge: The Ice Bucket Challenge. Its been all over the news and it has even hit the fashionista world with models such as quirky and silly Cara Delevingne to sexy and sultry Gisele Bundchen do it and posting it on their official insta-pages! For those who don’t know the rules it is within twenty four hours of being challenged, participants have to video themselves. But before they pour the ice cold water over themselves
120
m e s s m ag . c o m
they need to announce the next people to be challenged. The bucket is then poured over the participants head - without a set rule to the bucket size and this leads to a few being huge bin buckets to little glass salad bowls. This is honour of its pioneer Corey Griffin that tragically died at 3am on Monday morning. He was only twenty seven and it happened due to a diving accident. While Griffin didn’t have a direct relationship with the ALS Association, the ALSA commented on his contribution to the Ice Bucket Challenge’s success “We commend Corey for his exemplary efforts for raising awareness and funding to fight ALS.”

The UPS and DOWNS of Being one of the most famous photographers in the world, everyone has a strong opinion about Terry Richardson. With his career starting in 1993, hes has shot famous images of stars, knowingly wearing brands like Supereme, campaigns, and Fashion Weeks. However with his rise to success, Richardson has had falls and scandals, putting his career on the line. During his years active, he has worked with the most high end brands and magazines, making his work most wanted in the industry. This includes brands such as YSL, Marc Jacobs, Sisley, Supereme ad Aldo and additionally with magazines such as Vice, GQ, Rolling Stones Vanity Fair and Harpers Bazaar. He has also help create photobooks for fanbases such as TERRY RICHARDSON X LADY GAGA book, following the star around and her Monster Ball Tour. So what are his biggest ups and downs? He’s had memorable shots, which in the generation of fashion photography and conversation go down in history. His most recognizable and famous shots are the celebrity ‘white room’ shots, where has worked with a-list names, from Lady Gaga, to Miley Cyrus and to Bradley Cooper and Megan Fox. Creating ‘sex-appeal’ images is what he is known for, making him a versatile photographer in the industry. He famously ends his shoots with a image with his model/celebrity, showing instead of just doing his job he’s about
134
m e s s m ag . c o m
connecting to his fans, and building a relationship that who he is working with. Additionally in the past his images have raised conversation, such as his latest shots of Miley Cryus, where parents complained of being too provocative for her younger fanbase. He also helped direct her music video for ‘Wrecking Ball’. However with the rise of the popularity can come with scandal. During 2013 and 2014, a scandal rose regarding the photographer’s past models. With images being released on the web and accusing of ‘sexual harassment’ on and off set since then, brands such as Tom Ford have dropped Terry Richardson, with the negative response it came with. However with his hugely adored fanbase for his photography in fashion he is still in the business. However with the scandal not all claims were confirmed. Despite his rise and falls in the industry, Richardson has created memorable shots and videos of the modern celebrity image and the world of fashion. He is still a hugely influential photographer, who brands are dying to work with, especially to connect with a young/stylish audience.
Visual Merchandising: It’s All Psychological Giulia Bardelli
To create the perfect photograph you need exceptional lighting, to make sure that all of the colours are brought to life, but also to ensure that all colours and patterns are cohesive. Visual merchandising is not only limited to the editorials we see in magazines as it is also important to have a well planned out store. It goes for when putting together a display window for any store, creativity is what draws our attention. However, it is usually a minimalistic layout that catches our eyes because it makes things a lot easier when picking out the items that are of interest to us. Have you ever seen an item of clothing in a magazine and thought to yourself “I HAVE to have it?” I’m pretty sure I am not the only one who has found myself in this situation on numerous occasions and seems to discover that items look a lot more appealing in magazines than when you try them on in the stores.
Large fashion houses know the tricks that will make clothing or accessories seem more elegant and they play on the right strings to make sure that we don’t leave the store empty handed!
Clothing is made to photograph well, that’s why when we look at fashion blogs we are instantly drawn to the beautiful clothing, even if at times we would never think about wearing such clothes. In most cases it is because they are way out of our usual price range or we just don’t have an occasion to wear it. In February this year, I had the opportunity to attend the Vogue Fashion Festival in London and besides being in a very fast-paced environment; there were talks on how magazines capture images for their editorials. Fashion editors from British Vogue spoke about the importance of “bringing clothes alive” as their aim is to sell the item of clothing or accessory. Without a good editorial, which includes a story behind it and vision, the customer wouldn’t see the appeal in buying the pieces.

INTERVIEW WITH BENEDICTE CASTILLOGolshan Helfman Born in Lyon, France, Benedicte Castillo is an upand-coming dancer who moved here from France about two years ago. Benedicte danced for many prominent companies and shows around Europe, including X-Factor in London. Ms.Castillo has also made her mark in the US, most recently in Lady Gaga's GUY music video.
When did you start dancing? What inspired you to turn your passion into a career? I started dancing in Lyon when I was 10 and at age 14, decided that I had a serious passion for this art. At 17 I decided to stop studying law and pursue dance because I received a two year contract with a Cleopatra musical. This gig moved me to Paris, where I lived for about six years. Lady Gaga is not your average singer to work for. How did you land a job with such a high profile artist? The audition for Lady Gaga's GUY video was an open call audition, meaning any dancer could come and try out. About 400 girls auditioned by learning specific choreography and going through rounds of elimination. I was part of the final group of 30 girls and got a confirmation email that I had been chosen a mere 2 hours before rehearsals began! What was the set like? Was this your typical dance project? Working with Lady Gaga was different because she was both the performer and the director. One moment she was performing and the next she was behind the camera pointing out what she did and did not like. The filming process was long and tiring, with a week of rehearsal and six days of filming; three days in Los Angeles and three days in the Hearst Castle.
152
m e s s m ag . c o m
Lady Gaga is known for her outlandish set pieces and wild costumes. Did you get the opportunity to wear any of these fun outfits? I got the chance to visit Lady Gaga's Wardrobe truck. All the costumes were so beautiful and crazy it was amazing. Did you get the chance to meet Queen Monster herself? Yes. Lady Gaga attended rehearsal and traveled with us throughout the shoot. She was so sweet and professional and close with us dancers. Do you have any upcoming performances or projects you are looking forward to? I am a freelance dancer, so I never know what's going to happen next. Last week I shot an ad for a popular shoe company, and I don't know what I'll be doing next. That's the life of the dancer! What are your plans for your future dance endeavors? Any other artists you wish to work with? Working with Lady Gaga was definitely one of my dreams. If I could work with any male artist, it would have to be Justin Timberlake.
