Ronnie McGinn’s Poetry Corner Billy McCarthy a founder member of the Douglas Writers Group, who's first book “Barnetstown to Ballinglanna” a selection of short stories and poems taken from his earliest experiences in life to the present day, rekindled many a fond thought and lost memory in every reader. Billy is the author of this weeks poem and is a great exponent of traditional style writing and some of his poems have been set to music. In this poem he takes us back to Cork in the sunny long ago when Patrick Street was the most romantic place in Ireland. “Doing Pana” I remember my first date in Pana by appointment at quarter past seven, When I stepped off the bus at The Statue it seemed like I'd landed in Heaven. I slipped her a wink – she responded, with a smile and we strolled hand-in-hand,Down the length of the street and believe me, I felt like a prince of the land. Scarce a word between us was uttered; sure it wasn't a time for small talk We just window-shopped along Pana, on this beautiful night for a walk. When the length of the street we had covered, as we crossed to the opposite side With my arm round her waist for protection as the street was so terribly wide. We continued our promenade northward at a pace so romantically slow, Sure this was the way we did Pana in those carefree days long ago. Then a stop at The Old Bridge was standard, for a mug of tea and a bun. And many a friendship was made here and many a romance begun. Up one side and down by the other was the custom we knew at the time, As our parents had done so before us, and for them just like us 'twas sublime. We were hardly aware of the traffic, or others who passed by the way, For we only had eyes for each other, and we kept thoughts of others at bay. Then 'twas great as we passed the Lee corner and the fellas would stand and they'd stare, I could see they were all green with envy, while me, sure I hadn't a care, As I knew we were only repeating what others enacted before, And I couldn't care less so I said to herself “let's go 'round and do Pana once more”. Yes, that was the custom in those days; entertainment being scarce at the time,And a walk in the moonlight was heaven for us in the peak of our prime. Though you'd see older folk promenading, her arm linked in his as they strolled,And you'd think to yourself sure when all's said and done it's not really so bad being old. PAGE 8
Writers Group Meetings Now time is a great educator, so enjoy what you're handed in life, Yes, the girl that I met at The Statue became my adorable wife. As we bring up four children together without any bother or fuss, We hope that they'll follow tradition and continue doing Pana like us. Well, we still like to stroll out together, around by The Lough is our beat, And sometimes we'd do The Marina, such a colourful, peaceful retreat. Then often she'd make a suggestion to visit another terrain, And we'd take the bus into The Statue, and go back doing Pana again. Lynch TD NEW RULES WILL MAKE CYBERBULLYING AN OFFENCE Online abuse is to be made an offence under new rules brought out this week, Labour TD Ciaran Lynch has said. He was speaking as a report on internet safety report was published by an expert group established by Minister for Communications, Pat Rabbitte. “Online bullying and harassment are relatively new phenomena, but they can cause anguish and severe distress for innocent young people. “This report sets out clear, practical steps to deal with cyberbullying. Crucially, it addresses an anomaly which exempted online abuse from the law dealing with threatening, indecent or offensive messages. Now, sending abuse by ‘electronic communications’, or cyberbullying, will be included as an offence under the law. “To ensure greater safety online for children in public areas, a new family-friendly logo will be developed, that lets users know a public wi-fi access point is filtering adult content. “At government level, a new National Council for Child Internet Safety will ensure that the issue of online abuse is not allowed to fall off the radar. “This report will now go to government, and Minister Rabbitte has made it clear that he is determined to act on its recommendations, which will make for a safer environment for young people online.”

Protect your Rabbit Against Blowfly Strike What is Blowfly Strike? Blowfly Strike occurs when a fly lays its eggs on a rabbit, the eggs hatch and the maggots start to eat away at the animal's skin. This is extremely serious. Affected rabbits suffer great pain and distress while maggots eat away at their flesh. Untreated the Rabbit will die within days. Blowfly Strike is a truly horrific and preventable problem. Why do Flies Attack Rabbits? In Ireland most rabbits live outdoors in hutches which are cleaned once, maybe twice or three times a week. Rabbits produce faeces many times a day, and occasionally these faeces stick to the fur around the rabbit's bottom. Flies are attracted to the rabbit's hutch by the smell of the faeces, and especially areas of skin that have been soiled with faeces or urine. There they lay their eggs on the rabbit, the eggs hatch, and the maggots immediately start eating the rabbit's skin. How is Blowfly Strike Treated? Firstly all maggots need to be removed. This is a time consuming process, and involves physically picking the maggots off the rabbit. The rabbit is treated for shock, and given pain relief and antibiotics. It may be necessary to surgically repair some wounds caused by maggots which involves a general anaesthetic. Early intervention is essential for survival. What Can You Do to Protect Your Rabbit? Basic hygiene is essential. Clean the hutch daily. Check and make sure your rabbit's bottom is dry and has no faeces sticking to it. The current warm humid weather greatly increases the risk of blowfly strike so extra vigilance is essential for early prevention. It is advisable to apply Rearguard® to your rabbit. Rearguard® is designed specifically for the prevention of maggot attack. One application will last for 8 - 10 weeks, however it may need to be re-applied more frequently. It is your rabbit's best defence against this distressing condition.

Buttimer calls for Development Council to use its expertise to develop a long term plan for Cork Airport Cork South Central Fine Gael TD, Jerry Buttimer, has called for Cork Airport Development Council to be given the remit to contribute to a long term plan for Cork Airport. Deputy Buttimer was speaking in the Dáil on the State Airports (Shannon Group) Bill, 2014. “The establishment of a new high level stakeholder body, the Cork Airport Development Council, is a positive move for Cork Airport. But the expertise on this group should be harnessed to develop a comprehensive long term plan for the development and growth of the airport. “The Development Council provides a forum for senior stakeholders from a range of sectoral and geographic backgrounds who have an interest in the development of Cork Airport to engage with management at the airport and to help contribute to traffic and route growth. That this group has representatives from organisations such as Fáilte Ireland, the Cork Chamber of Commerce and EMC among others will ensure that local views will contribute to the future development of the airport so that it meets the tourism and business needs of the region. If this impact of this input is to be maximised then it must feed into a formalised long term plan. “The first item that this group should focus on is expanding the air connectivity available from Cork. In looking at this a priority must be developing air links with key international hubs with flights at times that suit businesses. We must protect and develop key routes such as Heathrow, Gatwick, Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt, Munich and Rome, but perhaps more importantly an air link to Dublin. “Having this range of flight options ensures that passengers using Cork Airport, for both business and tourism, can get direct flights to key international hubs which enable them to link to destinations across the globe. Focussing on these routes will enable Cork businesses to grow and expand internationally. This will benefit the language schools in Cork, third level colleges including UCC and CIT, the many leading international businesses that operate from Cork and all of those involved in the tourism sector. These PAGE 16
groups and businesses would be able to market Cork to a wider audience as a destination for business and tourism. “Regrettably the challenges facing Cork airport are compounded by the high level of debt that the airport carries. All parties involved in Cork Airport must continue to explore ways to reduce the debt levels it is carrying. Reducing this burden will allow the airport to reduce prices and attract airlines. Unless the debt is reduced the ability of the Airport to reach its full potential will not be delivered. “I hope that the Development Council will be the catalyst the will enable Cork Airport to grow so that it can reach its full potential. And I hope that the input of people from outside of the DAA group will facilitate a detailed consideration of how to restructure the debt at Cork Airport so that it does not continue to be a heavy weight preventing the airport attaining its obvious potential.”

Gardening Things to do this week
Summer Special As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week. Trees, Shrubs and Roses Young trees, shrubs, hedges and roses can suffer during a dry spell in early summer. Most of these recover when rain arrives but others can remain affected. These should be watered heavily to get water down to the roots. Watering should be carried out about once every week or ten days if the conditions remain dry at the root. Very often, people notice the trees wilting and water them but do not apply enough to penetrate to the roots. The same happens with showers of rain that are not heavy enough to penetrate, but at least the plants get moisture through the leaves too. Take summer cuttings of shrubs, including clematis and roses. Flowers Containers of all kinds will need frequent watering, even every day if the weather is hot and dry. Fortunately, warm weather also improves the results from flowers in pots and most kinds need warm weather to perform to their best. Feeding is also essential at this stage and can be given in every third or fourth watering. Stake perennial flowers that need it, if you have time. Take off the flower heads of foxgloves and lady’s mantle, and others that are likely to shed seeds and give rise to unwanted seedlings. Cut back lupins as soon as they have flowered and they might flower again later. Lawn Lawns can come under pressure in dry weather, especially on light soils. Lawns need to be fed with lawn fertilizer at least twice each year and most lawns need a second feeding now, if they have not already got it. When feeding, be careful to wait until rain is forecast because the grass will scorch if the weather turns dry. Continue mowing but raise the blades one notch in dry weather. Fruit, Vegetables and Herbs Unless you grow blight-resistant potato varieties, such as Sarpo Mira, it will be necessary to spray for potato blight in most years, especially for maincrop potatoes. The early crop varieties are usually used up by the time blight becomes a problem. Remove vegetables that have gone over and cannot be used to make space for new sowings. Sweet corn is sometimes slow to start in acool summer and do not make great height as a result. Make late sowings of lettuce, peas, carrots and radishes. If the soil is dry, peas and cabbage should be watered to keep the plants growing. Be careful about watering carrots because they often split if a lot of water is given. after a dry spell. Greenhouse and House Plants Be sure to water plants in pots or grow-bags regularly, because they can easily dry out. Continue to remove excess growth on a grapevine. Continue watering and feeding greenhouse plants. Train and side-shoot tomatoes and cucumbers. Take cuttings of greenhouse plants, such as pelargoniums, lantana, fuchsia and mimulus.

Derry to a very warm welcome from the host club and for the whole weekend the northern club couldn't do enough for the players and also for all who travelled with the girls Things didn't quite go to plan in the first match on Friday20th against our host club however on the Saturday the girls turned it around with two outstanding victories against very strong sides from Ulster and Limerick they came out top of their table and qualified for the Quarter finals where they came up against an extremely strong and indeed older Cashel side where sadly the Feile journey ended An outstanding weekend was had by all some great Camogie was played by this very young Feile squad The girls themselves have made so many new friends and some great memories were made by both the players and indeed the adults who travelled The girls were a credit to their club and their county both on and off the field We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who supported the fundraising campaign to get the girls to Derry and to those club members who worked tirelessly to get the trip organised. Blackrock U12s
Blackrock Camogie Club Notes With Louise Weldon Its been a hectic month of June for all teams with matches at home and away and the start of the Go Game blitzes. Sunday June 8th was a busy day in Blackrock Hurling Club. With 5 clubs, 10 teams and dozens of parents, grandparents and brothers and sisters to support, the Under 8 Go games blitz took place. Despite a shaky start with a nasty shower, the clouds cleared fast and the whistles were soon calling us to the pitches. 90 minutes of fun followed with all teams on top form showing what they have learnt over the last few months. 15 mathces later, our happy and very tired players headed to the kitchen for a well deserved treat. Many thanks to Cloughduv, Ballincollig, Ballinhassig & Ballygarvan Camogie Clubs for joining us on the day. Thank you also to all the coaches, parents and friends who helped to make it a very enjoyable occasion. The Under 12s continued their Go games with a match against Blarney. The team settled very quickly under the watchful eye of Mick Hickey and within minutes they were putting scores on the board. Each player concentrated on making the most of every opportunity and some lovely passes and team work meant they held onto possession for most of the match. Well done to each and every player, another great show of skill, you should be very proud. Intermediate training is picking up the pace ahead of the Championship which is due to start at the end of July. A recent trip to Na Piarsaighs showed the hard work is paying off. Well done to all. There has been lots of interest in the Golf Classic which will be held in Mahon Golf Club on August 8th. Tee times are filling up fast so if you are interested in taking part please contact Peadar Deegan on 086 6181947. ISSUE#1027-1028

Cork Club get the Celtic Call
Passage AFC
Passage AFC saw months of behind the scenes planning come to fruition last week with the announcement on the Official Celtic FC website that Passage AFC has been selected to be Exclusive International Partner Club of Celtic Football Club in Cork and one of only five clubs selected in Ireland for 2014. Passage AFC will have exclusive access to Celtic’s academy and development coaches for coach and player education following the announcement of the exciting link up between the two clubs as well as a Celtic Coaching Workshop in Passage in late October open to all players in Cork and beyond. Initial talks took place between Celtic’s Soccer Academy manager Willie McNab and Passage AFC’s Celtic Liaison Dave Crennell with the full backing of Football Academy Director Steve Walsh, Club Chairman Declan McGrath and Vice-Chair Ian Murnaghan. Mr Mc Nab was very impressed with the club’s enthusiasm to revitalize grassroots football by constructing and having the best soccer facilities and in turn developing youth players in the right way.
