Douglas Writers Group The next meeting of the Douglas Writers Group will be held in John O'Sullivan's (Business Centre), Douglas on Friday 11th July at 5.30 pm. The Douglas Writers Group meets on the 2nd Friday of every month at 5.30pm. Kevin's Day Fundraiser for Our Lady's Childrens' Hospital, Crumlin and Ronald Mc Donald House on Sunday, 6th July, from 1-5 pm Marie Piper Gregan and her team have pulled out all the stops this year to bring you a more exciting than ever Kevin's Day at the Community Park for the above charity. Crumlin Children's Hospital is an internationally renowned children's hospital, whose staff are constantly improving the health, wellbeing and improving outcomes for sick children and adolescents. When families travelling from around the country need to be with their sick children, they are offered accommodation at a Ronald McDonald House so that they are supported as they in turn support their children who are seriously ill or who are undergoing medical treatment at Crumlin. It is a wonderful charity and Marie and Kevin got the idea to run the event for the first time, 3 years ago, as a result of their own experience with Crumlin when their little grandchild was a patient there. Kevin died unexpectedly since then and Marie continues to run the event in his honour as he was so enthusiastic about the charity himself. Among the exciting events planned for Kevin's Day are a Dog Show, which has 7 different classes, including Best Groomed, Small Dog, Medium Dog, 'Dog the Judge would like to take Home' and Rescue Dog. The entry fee is €3 each. Alvin and the Chipmunks will be there to meet and greet you! Activities to suit all are arranged including Fancy Dress, Face Painting, and a Monster Duck Race for which tickets are now on sale at €2 per Duck or a strip of 5 for €5. The ducks will be raced in the river that flows all the way along the park, which attracted much excitement last year as owners followed their course along the river! So get in touch with Marie at 089-4408242 to avoid disappointment and buy your ducks. There will be food stalls, selling produce and providing freshly cooked food on the spot, take-away food and snacks. Sharon Piper will be there with her wonderful carousel to keep the kiddies happy. For the more sedate, who may be looking for a bit of relaxation and to experience a bit of old-world charm and pace, perhaps even to get all glammed up, the Cobh Animation Team will be there to entertain you.

Douglas Tidy Towns Just a reminder to all businesses and property owners in Douglas that judging for the Annual Tidy Towns Competition is taking place over the next few weeks so please continue your fantastic efforts. It is lovely to see the round-about off the Ring Road onto the Rochestown Roundabout on the R 610 beautifully planted up and brought to life after being overgrown for many years. Did you spot the classy make-over the Fingerpost Roundabout has had? One TT volunteer even went to the trouble of painting the paving slabs on the Roundabout and its surrounds, in black and white! Have a quick peek as you pass by! Cork County Council Works in the Park The lower part of the park will be fenced off by 30th June and Cork Co. Council Amenity and Parks section are carrying out works planned over four weeks on providing fitness items along the jogging path, and installing a basketball/kick-about area for children and teenagers. This work should be completed by August. We regret the inconvenience caused to pedestrians during this time period as access to the village area will be blocked off. Community Welfare Officer - New Times The new times for the Community Welfare Officer are on Wed. and Thursday mornings from 9.30-11.

Poetry Corner This week we have a beautifully written poem that contains deep personal feelings. It is a poem that affects us all because it contains the emotions of a young girl, a pupil in Star of The Sea primary school Passage West, who recently lost her mother and wrote this heart rendering poem to her memory. Heaven Needed Mary So many things of Mary I miss, Her gentle hugs and tender kiss, I can still feel her warm embrace, And picture yet her smiling face, A mother's tasks are never done, And heaven must have needed one, For angels came and took her hand, And led her to God's Promised Land, Although there's sadness, this I know, She's waiting there her face a glow, I close my eyes and I can see, Her arms still open wide for me. Douglas Community Association Douglas Playgroup and Pre-School News Update In just another couple of weeks the children of Douglas Community playschool and preschool will be on their summer holidays and their dedicated teachers and helpers will have a well earned rest. The last few weeks have certainly ended the school year on a high. The annual outing to Kool Kidz was a huge hit! The children were so well behaved as they headed off hand in hand full of excitement on the big bus for the first time, while us slightly nervous mums stood waving them off hoping they would have great fun and would do as they were told. But worry we need not have, as the whole trip was as roaring success and now everytime my son sees a bus I am treated to more stories of his school trip as well as a rendition of "the wheels on the bus"!. But last Friday was the highlight for us parents as we got to attend the annual Sports Day. The children were practising their running and egg and spoon racing all week and then cheered on by all the mums and dads everyone, in my own sons words, "had the best fun ever"! The celebration continued with an end of school year party in the community hall where there were medals and party bags for everyone. We must also give a big thank you to the parents of Ryan Li for donating the hot food which was enjoyed by parents and children alike. And finally a big thank you to the wonderful work of the teachers and staff in the School. You have made our children's year an exciting, fun filled adventure into the world of school and learning which we are sure will stand to them as they move to the next phase of their education and for that we cannot thank you enough. Douglas Community Playschool and Preschool are taking bookings for September 2014. For further please contact us on 086 1217161.

Ballinlough Writers Group - New Arrangements The next meeting of the Ballinlough Writers Group will be held in The Ballinlough Community Centre on Fri 20th June at 5.30 PM. The Ballinlough Writers Group meets on the 3rd Friday of every month at 5.30pm. We look forward to seeing you there! (inquiries 086 8839392) The Men's Retirement Bowls' Club They meet every Wednesday afternoon, it was well attended during the year. Three mats, the maximum the hall can accommodate, were in use most Wednesdays. All members enjoy an evening of fun and camaraderie. The members took part in a number of competitions during the year, most recently the 'Paddy Kearney Memorial Trophy', in which eight teams competed. The winning team: Mossy McGrath, Liam O'Flynn and John O'Driscoll. Runners –up: Harry Daly, Denis Corcoran and Pat Waters. Mrs. Anne Kearney and her son, Kevin, attended the final, presented the prizes and thanked the club for running the competition in memory of their late husband/father. Ray Cremin spoke highly of the late Paddy Kearney, as a person and as a community worker. The competition was sponsored by Cllr. Terry Shannon and organized by Vincent Barry, Ray Cremin and Noel O'Shea. Noel O'Shea thanked the members for their loyal support and help with the running of the club from week to week. Recently deceased members, Edgar Nolan, Frank O'Flynn, Michael J.Collins and Liam Towler are remembered with much affection. Solas na bhFlaitheas orthu. Garda Safety Forum Two meetings were held recently in Ballinough Community Centre, several issues were discussed. Sgt John O'Connor said it is intended to have four of these meetings in the year. Everyone is welcome to bring any issues that they may have, and at the next meeting the Gardai will report on the follow up that was taken on them. One of the ideas was to start a 'Text Alert' system in the Ballinlough area. The idea of this is that any unsocial activity in the area once reported to the Gardai, a text would be sent immediately to everyone on the system, example being if there were bogus callers in the area etc. It would also be used to make people aware if there was a big match in the area, or any traffic problems or diversions etc. This system is working very well in other areas. The next Forum will be held in September, date will be announced well in advance, so full details of the text alert system will be given by the Community Gardai at this meeting.
Why We Must Fight Dear Editor It's important from the outset that you realise that Irishwater is a registered private for Profit Company, registration No 53036 . ∙This company ceases to receive funding from the government after 2016, after this IW must look to the open markets for funding. ∙An expert group established by the government says the cost of providing water to every home in the country will run to 500e a year, twice the so called average charge. ∙The cost of setting up IW specialist services is 91m to date. ∙Denis O'Brien, the man accused by high court judges to have “beyond all doubt” bribed a FG government to gain control of a state asset (Esat) and to have subsequently made hundreds of millions by selling same, “purchases” a company called Siteserv, which specialises in the installation of water meters. This is about a year before the tender went out. This company owed 100m which was written off for Denis O'Brien, a tax exile. ∙I W are planning on installing a smart meter on your property soon ∙Smart meters emit RF waves which are a type of electromagnetic radiation, so there is potential to cause harm, this is the first of three, Gas and Electric to come, as part of an EU directive to have every home in Europe smart metered by 2020. Germany rejects smart meter proposal. ∙More than 6000 scientific publications show the negative health effects of unremitting RF microwave radiations. ∙Can act as a surveillance device which will affect your privacy. ∙IW are imposing these meters on people and acceptance of these meters is accepting a contract with them, which contradicts statutory instrument No: 27/1995 (unfair term in consumer contracts) regulations 1995. Also in breach of EU contract law. For more information on why you should say no to Irish Water, visit WWW.FLIUCH.ORG. Hope this is of benefit to your readers Yours truly, Keith O'Brien, Togher We'd love to hear from you. If you have any news, views or issues you'd like to see covered, write to The Douglas Post, Unit 29C, St Patrick's Mills, Douglas West, Cork or by e-mail to frontdesk@douglaspost.ie Please include your name and address and a contact number. Gardening Things to do this week
As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week. Flower garden Deadhead roses regularly, except those producing hips, and give a mid-summer feed of rose fertiliser. Tie in dahlia stems as they develop, and thin to 4-5 for extra large blooms. Cut down aquilegias and sweet rocket after flowering to prevent lavish self-seeding. Prune evergreen ceanothus after flowering, cutting back almost to the main branches. Take cuttings of osteospermums and Verbena rigida (V. venosa), both vulnerable to frost and damp later on. Kitchen Garden Make a last sowing of peas and dwarf French beans for late crops. Protect cauliflowers from bight sunlight by breaking 2-3 leaves over the curds. Sow maincrop turnips for storing. Tuck straw under bush tomatoes and cucumbers to keep fruits clean. As crops are cleared, transplant brassicas to limed positions, and water in well. Sow savoy cabbages in a shaded nursery bed for late winter supplies. Start using the largest self-blanching celery heads; earth or paper up traditional trench kinds. Sow chervil in a slightly shaded bed, in case plants bolt suddenly in hot weather. Sow a fast beetroot variety for baby beets in October. Lawns & Hedges Mow lawns twice a week if necessary for a fine finish. Trim privet hedges regularly to maintain a neat outline. Green House Check greenhouse plants for watering daily all this month, and damp down regularly. Water Garden In warm weather inspect fish regularly for early signs of diseases. In General After summer showers / storms, check for scorched shoots, signs of fireblight, on Rosaceae shrubs such as pears, pyracantha and cotoneaster

Labour TD Ciaran Lynch has said the new Clamping Bill will serve to protect users of private car parks and other areas where clampers operate. “In my previous role as Chair of the Environment Committee, I chaired a number of sittings and published a report on clamping regulation along with my committee colleagues. The report informed the drafting of this legislation to regulate the industry. In this context, I welcome Minister Varadkar's decision to take on board some of those recommendations and I am confident that the result will be a more open and fair system which protects motorists. “There has long been a need to regulate this area to ensure people have a clear and transparent appeals process if they take issue with a particular clamping episode. Clampers themselves also need to have proper identification, while the issue of release funds - specifically the charging of maximum sums - is an area which has been crying out for tougher regulation. “In general, the publication of the Environment Committee's report on clamping, which formed the basis of the Vehicle Clamping Bill, is a good example of a committee carrying out its own work at pre-legislative scrutiny stage. Part of that process involved engaging the various representative stakeholder groups to ensure that users of private car parks and other areas where clampers operate are protected by a legislative code of conduct, which will in turn result in a clampdown on rogue clampers.”

Pet Vacations Preparing for Kennel or Cattery Stay Holiday season is upon us and many of our pets will not be accompanying us but will be enjoying their own break away in kennels or a Cattery. As we all know peace of mind is paramount to having a good time, so a few tips to help prepare for your pets stay away from home. ·Book your Kennel or Cattery well in advance of your trip. Visit in advance the Cattery/Kennels you intend to use and discuss any special needs your pet has. ·Vaccinations - Kennels and Catteries will insist on all pets being fully vaccinated. This is very important and is in the interest of your pets' health and wellbeing. ·Worming – Your Dog/Cat should be wormed regularly with a broad-spectrum wormer. Adult Dogs and Cats should be wormed every three months. If you have been lax regarding your pets worm prevention schedule now is a good time to get back on track. ·Parasites – Treating your Dog/Cat to prevent external parasites is extremely important at all times and particularly so when your pet will be in contact with other pets. Use a prescription spot on to prevent Fleas, Mange, Biting Lice and Ear Mites such as Stronghold and or a prescription spot on such as Eliminall to prevent Fleas and Ticks. These should be applied monthly and are available from your vet. ·Food- In the interest of continuity or if your pet is on any prescription foods or medicine ensure you have sufficient quantities of each and have advised the Kennel/ Cattery on the quantities to be feed as well as the dosage and direction for any medication. ·Emergencies -Leave the contact details for your vet with the Kennel/Cattery in the event your pet becomes unwell. ·Anxiety- Being away from home can be a stressful time for your pet. Kalm Aid is a complementary Feed for Cats and Dogs, which promotes relaxation and reduces irritability. It is a liquid suspension, which can be added to your cat or dogs food around periods of heightened anxiety i.e. Kennels / Cattery stay. This is available from your Vet.

Know Your Rights: The Energy Engage Code
Jerry Buttimer T.D.
Constituency Office 4A Glasheen Road, Cork.
CLIN IC TIME S
Question What is the 'Energy Engage' Code? Answer The 'Energy Engage Code' is a new code of practice which aims to protect energy customers who are in financial difficulty, particularly those in arrears on their bills. It applies to five energy suppliers with effect from 1 June 2014 – these are Bord Gáis Energy, Electric Ireland, Energia, Flogas Natural Gas and SSE Airtricity. Under the Energy Engage Code, suppliers guarantee that no customer engaging with them will be cut off. The energy suppliers will seek to identify vulnerable customers at an earlier stage. They commit to treating each customer individually and offering realistic and achievable payment plans to customers in difficulty. The Energy Engage Code will be independently audited to ensure that the participating energy suppliers are complying with it. In addition to the new code of practice, all energy suppliers must comply with certain mandatory consumer protection standards that are set out by the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER). All suppliers are obliged to establish a register of vulnerable customers and to keep it updated. Customers listed on this register cannot be disconnected during the months November to March. A customer in arrears must be offered a payment arrangement, which can include the installation of a Pay As You Go meter, while avoiding a situation where the debt becomes worse. “At risk” customers must be referred to MABS, The St Vincent de Paul Society or a representative of the Department of Social Protection (formerly called the Community Welfare Officer). A supplier can consider applying for a disconnection only if these measures fail, and only after at least four separate attempts to contact the customer have been made. Buttimer and Doherty urge HSE to allow patients to continue to receive vital MS drug Fine Gael TDs and members of the Oireachtas Health Committee, Jerry Buttimer and Regina Doherty, have urged the HSE to take action to ensure Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients can continue to receive a new drug which is significantly improving their condition. The TDs were speaking after they met with MS sufferers using the drug. The drug - fampridine (Fampyra®) - is not currently available on the General Medical Scheme, and has been provided free of charge on a trial basis by the manufacturer to certain MS sufferers. Deputy Buttimer said: 'The use of the drug fampridine has had a huge impact on these patients' lives. It helps MS sufferers with their mobility and walking speed, and also has an impact on hand function, allowing those with the disease to carry out routine functions much more easily'. “The manufacturers of the drug have been supplying it free of charge on a trial basis to some patients, however the MS sufferers we met with today are concerned about what will happen when this trial ends at the end of this month. We are calling on the HSE to actively engage with the company to find a way forward. The patients simply won't be able to afford to pay for the drug themselves for the foreseeable future.”Deputy Doherty said: 'I was struck by just how big a difference this new drug is making to those suffering with MS. It is not suitable for every MS patient; in fact it is only effective for about one in three of those with the disease. But for those for whom it is effective, their quality of living is vastly improved'. “I know that the HSE has considered the inclusive of fampridine in the General Medical Scheme and Community Drugs Schemes, but it decided that the manufacturer didn't prove that the drug provided value for money. “However studies are ongoing which clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the drug, and I understand that the manufacturer is going to submit a revised application, which will be reconsidered by the HSE. It is crucially important that the HSE fully considers the impact this drug is having on the lives of certain MS sufferers. I am calling on the company to make every effort to put a compelling case forward to prove that this drug is vitally important to MS patients.” ISSUE#1025-1026
Insect Bites and Stings Signs and symptoms of an insect bite result from the injection of venom or other substances into your skin. The venom sometimes triggers an allergic reaction. The severity of your reaction depends on your sensitivity to the insect venom or substance and whether you've been stung or bitten more than once. Most reactions to insect bites are mild, causing little more than an annoying itching or stinging sensation and mild swelling that disappear within a day or so. A delayed reaction may cause fever, hives, painful joints and swollen glands. You might experience both the immediate and the Broadale delayed reactions from the same insect bite or sting. Only a small percentage of people develop Maryborough severe reactions (anaphylaxis) to insect venom. Signs and symptoms of a severe reaction include: Hill ∙Nausea ∙Facial swelling ∙Difficulty breathing ∙Abdominal pain ∙Deterioration of blood pressure and circulation (shock) Bites from bees, wasps, hornets etc. are typically the most troublesome. Bites from mosquitoes, ticks, biting flies also can cause reactions, but these are generally milder. Although rare, some insects also carry disease such as West Nile virus or Lyme disease. For mild reactions: Move to a safe area to avoid more stings. Remove the stinger, especially if it's stuck in your skin. This will prevent the release of more venom. Wash area with soap and water. Apply a cold pack or cloth filled with ice to reduce pain and swelling. Apply hydrocortisone cream (0.5 percent), calamine lotion or a baking soda paste - with a ratio of 021 436 69 23 3 teaspoons (15 milliliters) baking soda to 1 teaspoon (5 milliliters) water - to the bite or sting several times a day until symptoms subside.Take an antihistamine. Allergic reactions may include info@intervene.ie mild nausea and intestinal cramps, diarrhea, or swelling larger than 2 inches (5 centimeters) in diameter at the site. See your doctor promptly if you experience any of these signs and symptoms. For severe reactions: Severe reactions may progress rapidly. Call 999 for emergency medical assistance if the following signs or symptoms occur: ∙Difficulty breathing ∙Swelling of the lips or throat ∙Faintness ∙Dizziness ∙Confusion ∙Rapid heartbeat Take these actions immediately while waiting with an affected person for medical help: 1.Check for medications that the person might be carrying to treat an allergic attack, such as an auto-injector of epinephrine (for example, EpiPen). Administer the drug as directed. 2.Have the person take an antihistamine pill if he or she is able to do so without choking. Do this after administering epinephrine. 3.Have the person lie still on his or her back with feet higher than the head. 4.Loosen tight clothing and cover the person with a blanket. Don't give anything to drink. 5.Turn the person on his or her side to prevent choking if there's vomiting or bleeding from the mouth. 6.Begin CPR if there are no signs of circulation, such as breathing, coughing or movement. If your doctor has prescribed an auto-injector of epinephrine, read the instructions before a problem develops and also have your household members read them. Young at Heart With Phil Goodman Summer has finally arrived, get out and enjoy the mini heat wave we are experiencing. Getting vitamin D from the sun is one of the best ways to keep the immune system healthy, and is the only vitamin your body makes itself. Sun exposure is important to the body in many other ways. A lack of vitamin D can lead to many health problems. It is essential in bone growth. Its main role in the body is to increase the flow of calcium into the bloodstream. Without vitamin D calcium would not be absorbed into the body. One of the biggest issues for communities is the serious erosion of amenities and services, the latest being the attack on the urban and rural post offices. The post office has a unique standing in all communities and any closures would be devastating for the communities they serve. In many areas the post office is a focal point for social interaction and closures would lead to an increasing level of isolation and loneliness, especially for our older people. The strong bond that exists between the post office and its customers is unique. Blood donor clinics are pleading with the cork public to make blood donations to avoid a shortage of supply for this month. Blood donations are needed or people will die. People don't stop getting sick, the supply can't be down. One in four people will need a blood transfusion at some point in their lives. 1,000 people receive transfusions every week in Ireland; go along to the clinic in St. Finbarrs hospital. They will be delighted to see you. The trip to mount St Joseph Abbey in Roscrea last week was very enjoyable. Father Kevin welcomed us and gave us an insight of the daily life of the Cistercian Community. We had lunch and enjoyed the beautiful gardens. The Cistercian Community welcomes people from varied backgrounds to the abbey, for retreats, a time to reflect and rest away from the stress of everyday life, giving guests space, peace and time away from everyday life. We finished up the day in Ollie Hayes pub in Moneygaul. That is the pub that president Obama and his family visited. Moneygaul is the town where his ancestors came from. John and Agnes lead the way, singing “the banks” before we left. Moneygaul will never be the same again. It is a place we will return to again someday. Vertigo is when you experience a whirling or spinning sensation in the absence of your body moving in a way that would cause that sensation. Your balance is often noticeably affected making standing or walking difficult. Peripheral vertigo is caused by problems in the motion sensing organs of the inner ear (vestibular organs) or the vestibular nerve carrying signals to the brainstem centres (vestibular nuclei). Common conditions of the peripheral vestibular system are BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo), vestibular neuritis, Meniere's disease, labyrinthitis, superior canal dehiscence, antibiotic toxicity, and perilymphatic fistula.Usually a rapid compensation process occurs in the vestibular system, causing symptoms of acute peripheral To find the cause of your vertigo to improve in several days to a dizziness or vertigo we look not only at the peripheral few weeks. If your vertigo symptoms system, but also are persistent, or keep coming back we vestibular the central nervous and metabolic systems recommend you book in to have a professional evaluation. Central vertigo is caused by problems within the brain or brainstem (tumour, infarction, epilepsy, cervical spine degeneration, Parkinson's, MS, etc.) Usually there is less illusion of movement and nausea than with peripheral vertigo. Neurologic symptoms such as slurred speech, double vision, nystagmus (involuntary jerky eye movements), and disequilibrium (poor balance) are present. To find the cause of your dizziness or vertigo we look not only at the peripheral vestibular system, but also the central nervous and metabolic systems. Disequilibrium is often used to describe the unsteady (ataxic) movements and feelings of people when there is no definite cause. This is more often reported with advancing age, however it is not always due to the aging process. An underlying cause that can be corrected may be found with further examination and testing. Non-specific dizziness or vertigo of undetermined cause means that there is no objective finding on examination or diagnostic test that shows a visible physical cause of the vertigo. This does not mean that there is not a cause, just that the available tests have not shown the cause. The cause may be due to a problem with the function of the nervous system and not with the structure. There may be psychological states such as panic, anxiety, depression, phobia, PTSD associated with the dizziness. “Let's go under the sea” said Johnny excitedly. “But I can't swim his father protested. “ You don't have to” said Johnny. “But we'll get wet” continued the reluctant parent. “Oh, no we won't” said Johnny. “There are sharks down there” said his father. “I know – I've always wanted to see real sharks” said Johnny. “Won't you be scared?” inquired the father. “Of course not they won't harm us” Johnny told his dad where he meant to go. “OK you win” said the relieved parent. “Let's go” said Johnny. Johnny and his Dad are not going diving, or taking a trip in a glass-bottomed boat. So how are they going under the sea without coming to any harm? ISSUE#1025-1026

Victor Serebriakoff, International President of Mensa, once made up a poem about Hyperbolic Acid, a substance so corrosive that it would eat its way through anything. One day Sir Clive Sinclair, the inventor and UK Mensa Chairman, phoned his old friend with some stunning news. "Victor, you'll never believe this but I have actually invented you Hyperbolic Acid! Stay where you are and I'll dash round to your house with a flask of it right now". Victor replaced the phone and chuckled to himself. How could he tell he was being teased ?
